[00:02:08] White nationalist groups in Canada are coming out of the
[00:02:11] shadows
[00:02:14] and they're building their combat skills. These new groups
[00:02:17] are part of a global movement calling themselves active clubs
[00:02:20] in Canada. They have links to terrorist groups and extremist
[00:02:24] militia like organizations
[00:02:26] and they try to hide where they are. They blur their faces and
[00:02:29] hide their surroundings. We dug through their social media
[00:02:32] channels and investigated hundreds of videos and images
[00:02:35] posted by these groups to reveal who they are and where
[00:02:38] they train.
[00:02:42] Well let's go see what this travesties are.
[00:02:48] If you've never heard of an active club,
[00:02:50] it might seem harmless. Who doesn't want to be active,
[00:02:53] right? In reality, they recruit white people to
[00:02:56] tribe and train. Basically their fascist fight clubs and
[00:02:59] they're on the rise around the world. In Canada this movement
[00:03:03] overlaps with violent terror groups. Take Atomwaffen
[00:03:06] Division, it was a neo Nazi group linked
[00:03:08] to multiple murders in the US. It was listed as a terrorist
[00:03:12] entity in Canada in 2021. That's when many former members
[00:03:15] joined active clubs.
[00:03:17] And as we're about to show you, there's a bit of a theme here.
[00:03:20] This is probably one of the fastest growing far right
[00:03:23] extremist threats in Canada. Now,
[00:03:25] these groups say they're not looking for fist fights in the
[00:03:28] streets, yet they often refer to a
[00:03:30] looming global conflict and a time when civility will be
[00:03:33] unnecessary. These are people that in many cases are training
[00:03:37] for what they believe is to be an upcoming race war. The
[00:03:40] potential for violence and the potential for something
[00:03:43] catastrophic to happen is extremely high.
[00:03:48] One of the main groups behind this mask demonstration in
[00:03:52] Toronto is Nationalist 13, or NS-13, based out of Hamilton,
[00:03:56] ON. Members are open about their views. In this video from
[00:04:00] NS-13's Telegram channel, 1 of their members poses with a
[00:04:03] Nazi lighter on Hitler's birthday. The group called him
[00:04:07] one of the greatest men to ever live,
[00:04:09] saying one day we will see his vision come true. So in a post
[00:04:13] like this, even though there may be no mention
[00:04:17] of the Jewish people when they're referring to Jews,
[00:04:20] and in this particular case, anti-Semitism would clearly
[00:04:23] fall within the scope of the Criminal Code prohibition. So
[00:04:27] you think this is hate speech? Yeah,
[00:04:29] I think a lot of what's said in the post that you provided me
[00:04:33] with would would constitute hate speech under the Criminal
[00:04:36] Code. And these stickers that they put up in Hamilton's parks
[00:04:40] say National Socialists, Nazis. And here's where we find
[00:04:43] another link to a terrorist group. The Canadian Proud Boys
[00:04:47] expanded in 2021 after they were designated a terrorist
[00:04:51] entity following the January 6th US Capitol Riot.
[00:04:55] This is Brandon Lapointe. We find him wearing a Proud Boy
[00:04:58] shirt in multiple images. He's now a prominent member of MS13.
[00:05:03] Heavy matches, tattoos, rings, and his shorts. In this image
[00:05:07] posted by the group, we locate where they've been in
[00:05:10] Hamilton and city parks like Myrtle Park. Here
[00:05:14] you can see that this building matches exactly. We went to
[00:05:17] this location and every other to confirm ourselves. They've
[00:05:21] been sparring in broad daylight, like in this video from Gage
[00:05:24] Park in Hamilton.
[00:05:26] You could see the bathroom here and Dome here. Match the
[00:05:30] sketchbook. Oh well, shoot. And that's even closer
[00:05:33] towards the Children's Garden specifically.
[00:05:37] Ah, that's really upsetting to see.
[00:05:39] Yeah, I think that's a serious public
[00:05:42] safety concern. The rise of extremist organizing is a
[00:05:45] national security threat. So public parks are one thing,
[00:05:48] but we also find them in privately owned gyms,
[00:05:51] which they try to hide by obscuring the images they share.
[00:05:55] Nationalists 13 have a ton of pictures at this gym,
[00:05:58] with members often sparring or posing in the boxing ring. In
[00:06:02] another photo from the gym, this MS13 member is wearing a
[00:06:06] will to raise shirt. Will terrorize
[00:06:08] the clothing brand that markets itself to active clubs. There
[00:06:11] aren't many clues visible in these videos,
[00:06:14] but we spot this one in this video. You can see the edge of
[00:06:17] this boxing glove deckle here. It matches up with this
[00:06:20] promotional video for Amazing Fitness,
[00:06:23] a popular and family owned gym in downtown Hamilton. The ring
[00:06:26] and the windows match 2 an upstairs in the weightlifting
[00:06:29] section. This portion of the wall matches exactly the area
[00:06:33] behind the Man and the Will to Rise shirt. Remember Brandon
[00:06:36] Lapointe, the MS13 member we identify
[00:06:38] here? He is at Amazing Fitness
[00:06:44] so we drive to the gym to share our findings. The manager says
[00:06:48] he had no idea this was happening. A few days later he
[00:06:51] sends an e-mail and tells us we have no affiliation whatsoever
[00:06:55] with these individuals or ideology and we categorically
[00:06:58] reject any form of hate or discrimination. The fact that
[00:07:02] the gym owner doesn't know that they were training doesn't
[00:07:05] surprise me at all. It just goes to show how manipulative
[00:07:09] these groups are that they are going to lie about what they're
[00:07:12] doing.
[00:07:16] Now let's switch gears for a second. Besides nationalist 13,
[00:07:20] there's a new group called second sons. Second sons
[00:07:23] doesn't call themselves an active club,
[00:07:25] but they have the same MO. It's an offshoot of Diagon,
[00:07:28] a group that's on the radar of Canadian law enforcement,
[00:07:31] which considers them an extremist militia like
[00:07:34] organization and second sons, a nationalist 13. They actually
[00:07:38] know each other. This is Alex friend help,
[00:07:40] prominent member of Diagon and now second son. We're doing a
[00:07:44] createspace with the guys from Nationalist 13. Rent is also an
[00:07:48] open white supremacist. It's very simple. No Jews,
[00:07:52] no Jews. Here's friend posing at a gym that we identify as
[00:07:56] Hammer BJJ by matching up the wall padding and light switch
[00:08:00] with images from social media.
[00:08:10] We drive there too, to talk to the owner. This is
[00:08:13] Rob Barrow, the owner of Hammer BJ,
[00:08:16] and he says he had no idea this happened at his school. I don't
[00:08:20] affiliate myself with with any sort of white supremacy groups
[00:08:24] or any sort of supremacy from any faction, any race,
[00:08:28] any culture. I have a a firm policy that I don't want that
[00:08:32] those types of behaviors or those types of
[00:08:35] energies in this place. I'm trying to protect that and
[00:08:38] trying to foster into something good for the kids of the
[00:08:41] community that can come here and and better their life. This
[00:08:44] is something we're seeing happen across the martial arts
[00:08:47] community is just kind of insidious, gross of
[00:08:50] far right influence within it and to see something that is so
[00:08:54] positive to me and many other people being Co opted like this,
[00:08:58] it's not something I like to see. Second Sons also posted a
[00:09:02] photo that they say is from Hamilton,
[00:09:04] but that's not accurate. This photo is actually from Niagara,
[00:09:08] from this Brazilian jujitsu Joe Niagara. BJ. Well, again,
[00:09:11] we go and share our findings. They told us they didn't know
[00:09:15] Second Sons had been training there and now that they know,
[00:09:19] they're not welcome there anymore.
[00:14:09] Every fall, millions roll up their sleeves
[00:14:11] for a flu shot, but Americans will soon have a
[00:14:14] new option. The FDA has now approved Modernas mRNA flu
[00:14:18] vaccine for adults aged 50 and older. I am so excited about
[00:14:23] the potential for M RNA vaccines. She says a recent
[00:14:26] study found M RNA flu vaccines are 27 to 35% more effective at
[00:14:31] preventing influenza than the traditional flu shots. The M
[00:14:35] RNA vaccines seem to be very protective in people
[00:14:39] who are older, who have comorbidities and
[00:14:41] people who are immunocompromised. M RNA
[00:14:43] vaccines are easier and faster to make,
[00:14:46] which means more ability to adapt to new strains of the flu
[00:14:49] virus. Most flu vaccine is still grown in chicken eggs,
[00:14:53] and this takes months to do. And the farther ahead you have
[00:14:56] to plan to grow it, your risk of a mismatch in
[00:14:59] strains is going to be higher. Maderna has applied for
[00:15:03] approval in Europe, Australia and here in Canada,
[00:15:06] where it's under review. I'm hopeful that that helped.
[00:15:09] That will be quite optimistic about it. Jill Premoli's two
[00:15:13] year old son Jude died from influenza BA decade ago despite
[00:15:17] being vaccinated. While she says no vaccine is perfect,
[00:15:20] she now campaigns to promote the flu shot. We're not
[00:15:23] vaccinating against diseases because they're uncomfortable
[00:15:27] or inconvenient. We vaccinate because diseases kill people.
[00:15:31] The FDA's approval comes one year after the US health
[00:15:34] secretary announced a wind down of M RNA vaccine development.

[00:22:25] seniors and people living outside. So our critical point
[00:22:29] is really if it doesn't come down at night
[00:22:32] to the teens, then we get really concerned.
[00:22:34] Warren Maddox, executive director of the
[00:22:37] Fredericton Homeless Shelters, says when it's this hot,
[00:22:40] people living outside are vulnerable to heat exhaustion
[00:22:43] and dehydration. He says cooling centres like the
[00:22:46] shelters or public spaces such as libraries can help people
[00:22:50] survive heat waves. With the heating centre in the winter
[00:22:53] time, you can come in in 20 minutes,
[00:22:55] heat up, you're good to go. Cooling
[00:22:58] centres take a lot longer because you're driving. When
[00:23:01] you walk into a cooling,
[00:23:02] are you driving the heat inwards to your core and you
[00:23:06] gotta wait longer for that to cool down,
[00:23:08] otherwise you're just making things worse when you walk back
[00:23:11] out in the heat. He says a donation of bottled water
[00:23:15] dropped off at a shelter is always appreciated. What I'm
[00:23:18] observing is seniors are trying to cuddle into air conditioning
[00:23:22] places. Higher temperatures also bring risks to seniors,
[00:23:25] according to Cecile Cassista, the executive director for the
[00:23:29] Coalition for Seniors and Nursing Home Residents Rights.
[00:23:32] She warns that many of the seniors she works with don't drink enough water,
[00:23:36] dress in heavier clothing and sometimes have trouble keeping
[00:23:39] their living spaces cool without air conditioning. It is
[00:23:42] important that they do limit it. You know,
[00:23:44] the heat in their in their facilities,
[00:23:47] particularly in the small apartments and where there's no
[00:23:50] breeze coming in. So they need to make sure the first thing in
[00:23:53] the morning to make sure that their blinds are down so that
[00:23:56] the rooms are not heating up.

[00:27:24] have discussion now and in a good way because it's very,
[00:27:27] it's also a celebration of all the work of community groups.

[00:27:39] is also way to protest. So we are really happy to bring back
[00:27:43] the parade in Montreal. And also we have three major shows
[00:27:46] at the Olympics stadium, but also in the village. We

[00:28:39] and give space to 2 S LGBTQ plus communities. But at the
[00:28:43] same time, we are seeing attacks against
[00:28:46] these communities online. Those recent attacks in in Berlin.
[00:28:51] What goes through your mind during this whole week of
[00:28:55] festivities? I think, you know, we should respond with with
[00:28:59] love to the hate because our communities still targeted by
[00:29:04] an attack on the social
[00:29:05] me just, but also in the real life. And
[00:29:08] we have to continue to fight. We have to continue to create
[00:29:12] spaces for visibility. And I think if you have the morale is
[00:29:15] not just a festival, it's also a way to celebrate
[00:29:18] and be the platform for these communities. Every year we have
[00:29:22] almost 100, 000 people. They are here in
[00:29:24] the village to just find resources,
[00:29:26] have discussions. So it's just a major event for we want to
[00:29:30] continue to be present in the village because it's really
[00:29:34] important to be here. We want to grow,
[00:29:36] but with the communities. And Speaking of the village,

[00:29:41] feel about the iconic rainbow balls coming back?
