[00:01:50] follower lists to find their victims.
[00:01:52] So I have someone following me already.
[00:01:55] It's been, like, seconds.
[00:01:57] [Asha] That's how sextortion begins.
[00:01:59] These criminals pose as young girls
[00:02:01] and lure boys into sending a nude photo.
[00:02:04] Then they blackmail them. -[phone chimes] -Oh, Bella's talking to me.
[00:02:08] She says "Hi." [Asha] Bella's now messaging
[00:02:11] two of our accounts at the same time. Look at that.
[00:02:17] [Asha] What we're doing is just a test.
[00:02:19] We know there are families across Canada
[00:02:22] living with the brutal reality of sextortion.
[00:02:28] We're in Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island.

[00:02:48] Their 17-year-old son, Harry, a sextortion victim.
[00:02:52] So this scenario in the house
[00:02:54] that the boys had confiscated, it became the man cave.
[00:02:59] [Asha] Harry's presence is felt everywhere.
[00:03:02] [Carl] This is actually Harry's room.
[00:03:03] So this is where Harry spent his time.
[00:03:06] [Asha] His room filled with reminders of dreams unrealize.
[00:03:10] Those are his military boots that he was using
[00:03:13] when he was in the reserves.
[00:03:15] And I wear them when I'm doing stuff during the day
[00:03:19] just to feel closer to him, right? -[Asha] Yeah. Absolutely. -Yeah.
[00:03:22] I, Harry Burke... [Asha] He loved being a cadet.
[00:03:26] He said, I want to make Canada better.
[00:03:29] And this was the way he figured that he could do that.
[00:03:31] He was standing right here when he told us that.
[00:03:34] And I really feel he would have. But that was taken away.
[00:03:42] Harry and I spent that day together.
[00:03:44] We had done father-son things.
[00:03:46] [Asha] He tells his dad about a girl he's messaging on Instagram.
[00:03:50] Harry had come to me sometime in the afternoon to say
[00:03:54] he was talking to this girl around his age from Nova Scotia.
[00:03:58] And he showed me her picture. And it all seemed very real.
[00:04:03] [Asha] But Harry's situation unravels quickly.
[00:04:07] He confides in his dad.
[00:04:09] [Carl] That evening, Harry came to me. And he said, "Dad, I screwed up."
[00:04:14] And I said, "What do you mean?"
[00:04:15] And he said, "Well, I shared pictures."
[00:04:18] And he said, "They're looking for money."
[00:04:21] And I said, "We can't send the money, Harry." I knew what extortion meant.
[00:04:26] I said, "They'll just keep asking for more."
[00:04:28] [Asha] They call a family meeting. Harry was sitting right there.
[00:04:31] -And I was there. -Barbie was here.
[00:04:33] Harry explained to Mom what had happened.
[00:04:35] And during that conversation...
[00:04:39] we were all upset.
[00:04:41] And Barbie actually got a message.
[00:04:46] -On Instagram from the same... -Same person.
[00:04:49] ...same person.
[00:04:51] This individual that said... "I'm going to destroy you."
[00:04:55] And I wish Harry had never seen the message.
[00:05:00] [Asha] They make a plan to call police in the morning.
[00:05:03] Harry's parents don't know he's still being hounded
[00:05:06] well into the night.
[00:05:08] The scammer sends his photo to other cadets
[00:05:11] and threatens to send it to his commanding officer.
[00:05:14] In Harry's mind, he figured everything
[00:05:16] that he had worked so hard for was gone.
[00:05:19] He figured this would interfere
[00:05:20] with his chances within the PEI regiment
[00:05:25] to go to the Royal Military College and become an officer.
[00:05:29] I just feel so...
[00:05:32] He was sitting in the garage.
[00:05:35] And I said, "What are you doing?"
[00:05:36] And he said, "Oh, I'm just writing some thoughts."
[00:05:39] And I didn't ask him what he was writing. Tried to be...
[00:05:43] respectful, but it wasn't uncommon for Harry to journal.
[00:05:47] He did do that. So we talked for a minute.
[00:05:51] And I went to the door.
[00:05:53] And I turned around and I said, "I love you, Harry."
[00:05:56] He said, "I love you, Mom." He was writing his note.
[00:06:02] I didn't ask him what he was writing. If I had asked him...
[00:06:08] So there's a lot of blame, self-blame that we have.
[00:06:10] We don't blame each other, but it's the guilt...
[00:06:14] that we carry every day.
[00:06:19] [Asha] Harry dies by suicide
[00:06:21] less than 12 hours after connecting with his scammer.
[00:06:28] Sextortion is on the rise,
[00:06:30] with Canada's child exploitation tip line, CyberTip,
[00:06:33] telling us it receives 50 to 80 reports a week.
[00:06:37] While girls are targeted too, 85% of victims are boys.
[00:06:41] And Harry is one of more than 50 boys across North America,
[00:06:45] Australia, and the UK who have died by suicide.
[00:06:49] In Canada, since 2021,
[00:06:52] there's Daniel Lints from Manitoba.
[00:06:56] William Doiron from New Brunswick,
[00:06:59] Carson Cleland from northern B.C.
[00:07:02] And this 14-year-old from southern B.C.
[00:07:06] These are just the reported tragedies.
[00:07:08] Experts warn the unreported cases could be much higher.

[00:07:18] [Asha] Paul Raphael is a cybercrime analyst
[00:07:21] and leading expert on sextortion.
[00:07:23] There's no other scam that I think even compares to this.
[00:07:26] [Asha] Paul's poured through hundreds of conversations with sextorters.
[00:07:30] We ask him to analyze ours.
[00:07:33] Yeah, so interestingly enough, I have actually seen this profile picture before
[00:07:37] -You have? Huh. -...using the name Bella, yes.
[00:07:39] And this, with 100% certainty, is a sextorter.
[00:07:43] Because look at that. She kept pushing us off Instagram.
[00:07:47] So these criminals very quickly
[00:07:49] try to take their targets
[00:07:51] to usually an encrypted messaging platform
[00:07:54] to try to make sure that their Instagram account doesn't get banned immediately.
[00:07:58] [Asha] This scammer, Bella, does exactly that.
[00:08:01] So she says...
[00:08:04] The replies keep coming.
[00:08:08] And then... she says, "Show me your [bleep]
[00:08:11] and I will send you my full naked video in return."
[00:08:15] We're not going to do that. I think we're going to have to shut
[00:08:18] -this one down. -Yeah. [Asha] The conversations get explicit.
[00:08:22] In just 24 hours,
[00:08:24] seven separate accounts ask us for nudes.
[00:08:29] Later, in a stunning twist, another scammer messages us.
[00:08:33] He grabs our headshot,
[00:08:35] alters it with an intimate image to sextort us.
[00:08:39] "Answer me right now. Four, five."
[00:08:41] He's running a countdown, demands a $50 gift card.
[00:08:44] -Don't try me. -Angry face.
[00:08:47] [Asha] He's threatening to post the picture online.
[00:08:55] Then he calls us. Hello?
[00:09:02] I don't have any money.
[00:09:08] How can I pay you? I don't have... He hung up.
[00:09:11] [Asha] When he calls again, we reveal who we are.
[00:09:15] Listen, my name is Asha Tomlinson. I'm a journalist with
[00:09:18] the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto.
[00:09:24] We know that you're sextorting us. This was a fake profile.
[00:09:28] He hung up. As for Bella, she leaves a clue
[00:09:32] about her real identity when she texts us
[00:09:35] from a Nigerian number. So we call. What's your name?
[00:09:39] Okay. And so you had the profile
[00:09:42] set up as Bella, right?
[00:09:48] I guess I'm just trying to understand
[00:09:50] why you scam people.
[00:09:56] You don't have money?
[00:09:58] We know a lot of the financial sextortion scams right now
[00:10:01] are coming from West Africa, specifically Nigeria.
[00:10:04] [Asha] In fact, most Canadian deaths have links to Nigeria.
[00:10:08] This isn't just a public safety emergency,
[00:10:11] but this is also a national security emergency too.
[00:10:17] [Asha] Coming up, we confront one of the Yahoo Boys.
[00:10:20] So you don't ever wonder if the person
[00:10:23] on the other end is suffering
[00:10:26] because of the scamming that you've done.
[00:10:44] They don't just target one person at any given time.
[00:10:47] They target as many people as they can reach out to.
[00:10:50] [Asha] ...into sending compromising photos.
[00:10:53] Then those images are used for blackmail.
[00:10:56] We create fake profiles and seven scammers ask us
[00:11:00] to send nudes in just 24 hours.
[00:11:03] Predators can reel kids in within minutes.
[00:11:06] And some, once they're in it, feel there's no way out.
[00:11:12] Come. [Mikayla whistles] [Asha] In Prince George, British Columbia,
[00:11:16] Ryan Cleland and his daughter Mikayla
[00:11:18] are still trying to make sense of it all.
[00:11:20] I had spoken with Carson about sextortion
[00:11:24] online and what to do if it happens.
[00:11:26] [Asha] Ryan wonders how his fun-loving,
[00:11:29] caring 12-year-old boy, Carson,
[00:11:31] got caught up in the unthinkable.
[00:11:33] How did that conversation go?
[00:11:36] It was awkward, very awkward.
[00:11:39] He said, "If you ever send somebody a picture of your penis...
[00:11:42] God, I wouldn't." I said, "Well, just... If you do...
[00:11:47] and they want money, just... come get me.
[00:11:51] Don't send money, don't panic, don't freak out. Come get me, we'll deal with it."
[00:11:55] [Asha] In October 2023, Carson meets who he thinks
[00:11:58] is a girl on Snapchat.
[00:12:01] They start chatting in the morning.
[00:12:03] During their conversation, Carson sends a nude photo.
[00:12:07] He knew what to do.
[00:12:09] He just couldn't think past his fear.
[00:12:11] [Asha] After just 12 hours, Carson takes his own life.
[00:12:16] He just-- he just panicked.
[00:12:20] [Asha] Recalling that day, Ryan says Carson left school early,
[00:12:24] telling his sister he wasn't feeling well.
[00:12:26] I only just found out that Carson actually
[00:12:29] went to the store that day and bought a gift card and sent it to them.
[00:12:33] So he did pay the scammer.
[00:12:37] 25-[bleep]-dollars.
[00:12:42] [sobbing]
[00:12:46] [Asha] In search of answers, Carson's sister, Mikayla,
[00:12:49] decides to read the police report. [Mikayla] He actually did
[00:12:52] go to the store and buy a gift card.
[00:12:54] They used it and then said that
[00:12:57] that it didn't work and to buy another one.
[00:13:00] He had obviously gotten a lot more scared
[00:13:02] and kind of frantic with the way he was responding and stuff.
[00:13:06] Did you get a sense of the pressure
[00:13:09] building for him?
[00:13:11] Yeah, you could definitely tell how scared
[00:13:14] and kind of stressed out he was getting
[00:13:16] and get a sense of how he would have felt through those messages when you can really see them.
[00:13:20] It's definitely the hardest part about that.
[00:13:25] He didn't know what to do. He's just a boy.
[00:13:30] And that's an adult problem.
[00:13:33] That's why they pick on the kids.
[00:13:35] That's why they look for them. They're easy targets.
[00:13:41] [Asha] Carson wasn't the only one victimised.
[00:13:43] Some of his classmates were also targeted at this school.
[00:13:51] In blackmailing, BM.
[00:13:53] We discover dozens of online groups
[00:13:56] sharing strategies and inside information
[00:13:59] on what's known as the BM sca, which stands for blackmail.
[00:14:03] Let's go in there and check that group out.
[00:14:05] We enter their forums undercover
[00:14:07] to see how they recruit new scammers.
[00:14:10] Right there, he's saying it's blackmailing.
[00:14:13] He's admitting what he's doing.
[00:14:15] They call themselves the Yahoo Boys.
[00:14:18] And they're based in Nigeria,
[00:14:19] showing off the money they make on social media.
[00:14:23] "So your deal with him is to take 70% of his salary.
[00:14:26] That's how BM works.
[00:14:28] The client must keep paying every month."
[00:14:32] We find a Yahoo Boy willing to talk.
[00:14:35] We're not revealing his identity because he fears for his safety.
[00:14:39] At first, he denies being involved
[00:14:41] in the BM scam, but then...
[00:14:43] I'm just wondering if you've run the BM scam before.
[00:14:47] Yeah, most times. Not every time.
[00:14:49] -Not every time? -Yes.
[00:14:51] [Asha] He's based in Lagos, a hotbed for cybercrime.
[00:14:55] [indistinct] it's very, very large.
[00:14:58] It's very hard to find a job.
[00:14:59] So I guess I need something doing to survive.
[00:15:02] So you don't ever wonder if the person
[00:15:05] on the other end is suffering
[00:15:08] because of the scamming that you've done?
[00:15:11] Yeah, let me just-- I don't know what to answer to that.
[00:15:15] [Asha] We also speak with a man who's left that life behind.
[00:15:18] I feel so bad after what I've done.
[00:15:21] I feel so bad. [Asha] He wants to remain anonymous
[00:15:25] because of security risks.
[00:15:27] In my case, I wanted to go to the realm,
[00:15:29] you know, of becoming a billionaire.
[00:15:31] But then you have to be diabolic.
[00:15:35] [Asha] He says he was a Yahoo Boy for a decade
[00:15:37] before the BM scam gains traction.
[00:15:40] Now he says he's a pastor,
[00:15:42] warning young Nigerian men about the dangers.
[00:15:45] You think that they know that,
[00:15:47] that they're driving some people to kill themselves
[00:15:51] because they've been scammed? So many of those people,
[00:15:54] they've sold their soul to devil. They don't care.
[00:16:00] [Asha] Coming up, we put the pressure
[00:16:02] on the Minister of Justice.
[00:16:04] We spoke to the families of two teen boys who took their lives.
[00:16:08] They feel like there's been no real action from government.
[00:16:13] What is your message to them?
[00:16:30] Your heart hurts so bad.
[00:16:33] [Asha] ...by a financial scam that manipulates boys
[00:16:35] into sharing nude photographs. And then they're blackmailed.
[00:16:39] "Just pay me $50."
[00:16:41] They find them on social medi, coerce them on messaging apps.
[00:16:45] "You got Telegram?"
[00:16:46] [Asha] Applying pressure until they break.
[00:16:50] Some have taken their lives.
[00:16:52] And now their parents want accountability.
[00:16:55] Cybercrime expert Paul Raphael says
[00:16:57] it's on social media companies to act.
[00:17:00] We know that the primary source of leverage
[00:17:02] that these criminals use is the followers lists.
[00:17:06] The moment that a victim accepts the criminal's follow request,
[00:17:09] their entire social network is compromised.
[00:17:11] Ultimately, it comes down to a fake account problem
[00:17:14] and platforms are very resistant to block
[00:17:18] or prevent the creation of new fake accounts.
[00:17:20] We reach out to the platforms.
[00:17:22] They all say sexual exploitation is against their terms of use.
[00:17:26] They remove accounts when users report it
[00:17:29] and proactively look for bad actors.
[00:17:32] Meta and Snapchat add they do work with law enforcement
[00:17:35] and send pop-up warnings about suspicious accounts.
[00:17:39] TikTok says teens under 16 don't have access to direct messaging.
[00:17:43] And Telegram makes it a point to say it is impossible
[00:17:47] for any platform to remove all criminal content.
[00:17:51] Carl says that's not good enough.
[00:17:54] The only way they'll ever change in doing us is if they're forced into doing it.
[00:17:59] Our lives will never be the same.
[00:18:01] And it sickens me, the attention that social media
[00:18:04] has given it, which is nothing.
[00:18:07] Absolutely nothing.
[00:18:09] It's like your kids don't matter.
[00:18:12] We look at an empty chair and an empty bed
[00:18:14] and our son is in an urn beside our bed.

[00:18:27] campaigns on better protecting kids from online harm.
[00:18:30] My government will act to protect children online
[00:18:33] and bring those who seek to harm them to justice.

[00:18:45] He finally agrees to talk to us over the phone.

[00:18:57] They've campaigned on it as well. You've been in office for six months.

[00:19:08] designed to help protect kids online.

[00:19:21] and Harry Burke, two teen boys
[00:19:24] who took their lives after being sexstorted.
[00:19:27] They feel like there's been no real action from government.
[00:19:31] They want to see it. What is your message to them?
[00:19:35] [Fraser] Dealing with the loss of a child
[00:19:37] is the most profound grief that a family can experience.
[00:19:43] We want to do what we can as a federal government
[00:19:45] to change the laws where they are not working.
[00:19:48] What people should expect to see, in short order,
[00:19:51] is new criminal legislation
[00:19:53] that's going to address child luring,
[00:19:56] that's going to address non-consensual sharing
[00:19:58] of intimate images of deepfakes,
[00:20:00] that's going to specifically address
[00:20:03] online sexploitation and extortion of kids,
[00:20:06] in addition to new tools that we want to give
[00:20:08] to law enforcement to prevent this crime.
[00:20:13] [Asha] In the meantime, victims are finding support in each other.
[00:20:17] I was in that suicidal state of mind.
[00:20:19] [Asha] We're hiding this young man's identity
[00:20:21] to protect him from being re-victimized. We're calling him Kyle.
[00:20:25] The difference was maybe I didn't have the capability
[00:20:28] of doing something to myself, but other people do.
[00:20:31] [Asha] When Kyle is extorted in 2021,
[00:20:34] he goes to a dark place, but finds his way out
[00:20:38] by helping other victims in a Reddit community.
[00:20:40] I would check in with them daily,
[00:20:43] especially with the people who were suicidal.
[00:20:45] I'm like, "I want you to check in with me
[00:20:48] every hour on the hour."
[00:20:49] [Asha] He has this advice for those going through it no.
[00:20:52] I know it's hard at first. I was there. Calm down.
[00:20:56] Realize that this is very insignificant.
[00:20:59] Even if it had your face, there is someone
[00:21:02] who would care enough to understand.
[00:21:06] [Asha] Carl is also finding purpose in his community.
[00:21:09] We didn't know anything about it through the school system
[00:21:12] or through any sort of police involvement.
[00:21:16] [Asha] He's speaking to schools across PEI, raising awareness.
[00:21:20] I've spoken to over 5,000 children so far,
[00:21:23] and the kids that come to talk to me,
[00:21:26] they come in groups, they come in pairs,
[00:21:29] they come one at a time.
[00:21:32] They're careful, they're heartfelt. They want a hug.
[00:21:35] They thank me for what they've learned.
[00:21:38] And the stuff I'm talking about, they knew nothing about.
