[01:00:28] Friends need to stick together these times. The Prime Minister
[01:00:30] has called Canada the most European of non European
[01:00:33] countries. Now he's facing questions about how close he's
[01:00:36] willing to get. We're not looking to become a member of
[01:00:40] the European Union. The Mark Carney is traveling to France
[01:00:43] this week to deepen the relationship in a new way. You
[01:00:46] are looking and beginning. We'll begin discussions for
[01:00:49] unique
[01:00:50] alliance with the European Union. A senior Canadian
[01:00:53] official says they're looking at ways to partner more closely,
[01:00:57] including on critical minerals, AI,
[01:01:00] defence procurement and payment systems. Both Europe and Canada
[01:01:04] are under attack, frankly, by the United States on our
[01:01:07] economy, on our sovereignty, he says. That's pushing the EU
[01:01:11] and Canada closer together. And the message to Donald Trump is
[01:01:15] Canada has other options. We can sell elsewhere. We can have
[01:01:19] security partnerships elsewhere
[01:01:21] and that's what Mark Carney is going to be doing. Next week.
[01:01:24] Carney is set to deliver a speech to European Parliament
[01:01:27] that setting up an office in Ottawa and attend the European
[01:01:31] Commission President State of the Union address. Both
[01:01:33] speeches are expected to be about what more they can do
[01:01:36] together. We are really hoping to actually see something that
[01:01:40] goes a step further. That really says no,
[01:01:42] we are doing something of a new level here. Look at trade,
[01:01:45] it's about 8% of our trade with the EU. It should be much more
[01:01:49] than that.
[01:01:50] But the Conservatives say Kearney needs to lay out
[01:01:53] exactly what it will mean for Canadians. We want to find out
[01:01:56] what is actually being proposed and then of course, you know,
[01:01:59] are we going to be giving up any level of sovereignty or
[01:02:03] control to
[01:02:04] entity or bureaucracy that is thousands of kilometers away?
[01:02:08] A senior Canadian official I spoke to said that the goal of
[01:02:11] Canada getting closer to Europe is to strengthen the country.
[01:02:14] Sovereignty not limited. So any model that involves giving up
[01:02:18] independence has already been ruled out,
[01:02:20] including a title called Associate Member of the
[01:02:22] European Union. Actually, do you have any more details
[01:02:25] about what this deeper relationship could look like

[01:08:00] strong and smart high IQ president. Warning,
[01:08:03] don't kill the golden goose. It comes after a whistleblower
[01:08:07] warned that AI could kill humanity. You're building a
[01:08:10] human level or superhuman
[01:08:12] able mind without understanding what it wants or thinks or the
[01:08:16] way it thinks. And I think that intrinsically should be quite
[01:08:20] scary. Well, industry leaders are seeking
[01:08:22] regulation and a development slowdown. I don't think I fully
[01:08:26] just appreciated what it would actually be like when the
[01:08:29] progress was as fast as it was. These pleas are being met with
[01:08:33] skepticism by the White House. I feel a little bit weird about
[01:08:36] the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind
[01:08:40] of coming to the government and begging the government
[01:08:43] regulate them. It feels a little bit to me like a bit of
[01:08:47] a Trojan horse. The Trump administration has long framed
[01:08:50] AI development as a race between the US and China. I've
[01:08:54] said it from the beginning, whoever wins AI,
[01:08:56] and we're leading by a lot, whoever wins AI wins. In
[01:09:00] Beijing, there are also concerns about
[01:09:02] AI development, whether it poses threats to the
[01:09:05] Communist Party's rule and what it means for cyber security.
[01:09:09] Tech discussions will come up when President Xi Jinping
[01:09:12] visits Washington next week.
[01:09:14] It doesn't matter who builds the AI if the AI does not stay
[01:09:18] on a leash. Whatever decisions are made,
[01:09:20] the stakes could not be higher after a summer of disturbing
[01:09:24] discovery. Over the past couple of months,
[01:09:26] there have been real instances of AI's breaking out of
[01:09:30] containment, doing things that they were not
[01:09:32] instructed to do. Researchers looking at those events got a
[01:09:36] bit spooked. The closer people looked,
[01:09:38] the worse it got. Deck giants are expected to have an
[01:09:41] opportunity to discuss this with the president in person
[01:09:45] as a summit is being organized by the White House. So Donald
[01:09:49] Trump seems to view this as a race with China. But. But there
[01:09:52] are certainly other reasons why he may not want this to slow
[01:09:56] down. Yeah, part of the reason the stock
[01:09:58] markets have done so well through tariff uncertainty is

[01:18:49] An Iranian man who moved to Canada in 2021 has been told he
[01:18:52] may not be allowed to stay because of previous mandatory
[01:18:56] military service assigned to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

[01:19:04] did two years of administrative work with the Guard in 2011.

[01:28:13] Frustrated and determined to join the conversation,
[01:28:17] she made a video of her own. It's an opportunity to shine
[01:28:20] light, I think, on
[01:28:22] an issue that's bigger than just one AD.
[01:28:27] Other Canadian athletes are taking a stand,
[01:28:29] too. Skeleton racer Hallie Clark posted
[01:28:34] and Sprint can newest Sophia Jensen among the many saying
[01:28:37] this is what women in sport look like. In a way,
[01:28:39] it's kind of like it's a step back,
[01:28:41] but then you also see a step forward and the reaction that
[01:28:44] this isn't normalized, that people are kind of like,
[01:28:47] oh actually no, we're not cool with that.
[01:28:49] Sweeney isn't just front and centre in the ad for the
[01:28:51] company Novick. She's also an equity holder. Neither
[01:28:54] responded to an interview request,
[01:28:56] but in a statement of the day the ad was released,
[01:28:58] Sweeney said the concept is simple. Cut through the noise
[01:29:01] and put the focus entirely on sports. Kind of power to her in
[01:29:05] a way, but then it's like, at what cost?
[01:29:07] And with so many sport betting companies vying for a seat at
[01:29:11] the table, a sex sells strategy may not
[01:29:14] pay off, says one sports marketing
[01:29:16] expert. This may be an instance where we see and and are having
[01:29:20] conversations about this brand and about this actress,
[01:29:24] but over time, if it doesn't translate into
[01:29:27] sustained consumers and sales, direct revenue,
[01:29:30] then it hasn't been successful.
[01:29:33] Back on the ice, Madeline Skis US is trying to

[01:30:38] like the queer people aren't really protected. So seeing
[01:30:42] like happy,
[01:30:44] sorry. This really makes me hope for a better future. Save

[01:30:50] this protest began peacefully with people concerned about
[01:30:53] libraries, but later turned violent,

[01:31:17] sustainable funding, which includes annual increases

[01:36:35] to the customers. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are
[01:36:38] primarily imported from the US, and they are among the products
[01:36:42] that are impacted by Canada's
[01:36:43] 50% retaliatory tariffs on American goods. Anytime that
[01:36:47] there's a big increase like that to any price,
[01:36:50] it's hard to pass that along to the customer. So us as a US,
[01:36:54] as a local dealer and a Motor Company,
[01:36:56] we do what we can to support the customers. However,
[01:37:00] Lafrance says the business is in a more fortunate position.
[01:37:04] Our inventory currently in our store right now is not tariffed
[01:37:08] and it's still at the original pricing. And so,
[01:37:11] and we're probably not going to receive any more motorcycles
[01:37:15] for the rest of this year. So we may,
[01:37:17] we're hoping we're going to dodge a bullet. Meanwhile,
[01:37:21] the Canadian company Iceberg Vodka is grappling with Trump's
[01:37:25] recent ban on Canadian imports, which includes alcohol. Now
[01:37:28] we're all just trudging through all of this uncertainty and
[01:37:32] volatility right now. It's this kind of uncertainty that's
[01:37:36] forcing the company to adapt on the fly as constant change
[01:37:40] becomes the new normal. We've been dealing with sort of the
[01:37:43] threat of tariffs ever since.
[01:37:46] We've sort of changed our game plan accordingly. To say we're
[01:37:50] into plan BC&D is would be an understatement,
[01:37:53] but Chicolini says pricing won't change. The Distillery
[01:37:56] plans to keep production steady, pivoting to expand its Canadian
[01:38:01] footprint and hunt for new global markets while banking on

[01:38:58] Police say these scams are reaching residents all across
[01:39:02] the province. Saskatchewan RCMP say every fraud is unique,
[01:39:06] and while text messages are common,
[01:39:08] so are emails and phone calls. Fraudsters are becoming more
[01:39:12] intelligent in their approaches and the ways that they're
[01:39:16] contacting victims, which means we need to be on
[01:39:19] alert as general citizens when we get these calls
[01:39:22] and and asking those tough questions. Is this legitimate?
[01:39:26] Do I need to make a call? Experts say scammers are
[01:39:29] becoming more sophisticated in the ways they operate. That's
[01:39:33] because AI tools make it easier for attackers to target more
[01:39:37] communities in less time. Even pre AI that attackers really
[01:39:40] just have to have
[01:39:42] will target, you know, thousands of people at the same
[01:39:46] time and they only really need one or two victims to make make
[01:39:50] it worth their while. Since June,
[01:39:53] the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre has processed more than 15,
[01:39:57] 000 fraud reports. It says about 10,
[01:39:59] 000 Canadians have been victims and all told they've lost more
[01:40:03] than $350 million. So how do we protect ourselves?
[01:40:07] Most fraudsters pressure their victims to take immediate
[01:40:11] action, making it hard.
[01:40:13] This says the situation. Both experts recommend the same set
[01:40:17] of actions. Stop and take a step back. Listen to your gut.

[01:40:24] respond or interact with the sender or link and take a

[01:40:54] Some of the biggest names in AI, including the heads of Open AI,
[01:40:57] Anthropic, and even Elon Musk, are warning that development is
[01:41:02] moving too fast. 1 Insider has even said that AI could kill
[01:41:06] all humans by the end of the decade.
[01:41:09] So what does that message mean for people who are just
[01:41:12] entering the field? We asked University of Windsor
[01:41:15] computer science students how they see the risks. If you
[01:41:18] think it can end the world,
[01:41:20] I think it would be pretty hard for it to end the world. I
[01:41:23] think there's definitely potential for AI to be used in
[01:41:26] a way that might end the world. I think the chances that the
[01:41:29] world has ended just by like a rogue AI is pretty slim,
[01:41:32] especially like with what we have right now. I see it
[01:41:35] usually has like a marketing tool because it kind of feeds
[01:41:38] into the perception that AI is like really powerful and AI has
[01:41:41] a lot of potential to like disrupt and change everything.
[01:41:44] I guess not the first time that day ilab said that everything's
[01:41:48] going to change, The world's going to end, Claude is going to take over.
[01:41:52] So it's a little hard to take it seriously every single time
[01:41:56] they do it. A lot of the security policies,
[01:42:00] the permissions issues and things like that,
[01:42:03] that the development for for that takes longer than the AI
[01:42:08] takes to develop. So there's constantly new ways that the AI
[01:42:12] can find to kind of circumvent security and permissions. And
[01:42:17] so I think in that aspect, that's definitely something
[01:42:21] that needs to be considered.
[01:42:23] And baby, then kind of slowing down on AI
[01:42:26] development is a good idea. I don't know if slowing things
[01:42:30] down is going to work, first of all,
[01:42:32] because when you have new PhD students, a lot of researchers,
[01:42:36] they're excited to come up and with the next thing. So they
[01:42:40] want to really develop things faster. They tell students that
[01:42:44] you are in charge. You have to think of AI as a tool,
[01:42:48] but like any tool, it could be a dangerous tool if
[01:42:51] you don't use it adequately and properly.

[01:44:56] way that we deal with obesity and weight loss. They've also
[01:44:59] been a veritable gold mine for drug companies. Now,
[01:45:13] Jessica. Thanks. Yeah. So, I mean, for a family doctor,
[01:45:16] you know, these drugs have been so popular, such a rise in these products.
[01:45:20] What does that mean for you and your practice? Well, the first thing I will say is
[01:45:24] that these medications aren't for everyone who is seeking
[01:45:26] weight loss or diabetes. There are side effects and
[01:45:29] contraindications. But I will also say that for my patients
[01:45:32] who have historically struggled with managing their weight or
[01:45:35] managing their blood sugars, that it is somewhat of a game
[01:45:38] changer. And a major reason is because these kinds of
[01:45:40] medications work on multiple levels. So they increase
[01:45:43] insulin release from your pancreas to deal with sugar
[01:45:46] spikes. They slow down your digestion so it makes you feel
[01:45:49] fuller faster. And also I would say what my patients
[01:45:51] recognize and notice the most is that actually that food
[01:45:55] noise in their brain tends to quiet down because these
[01:45:58] medications act directly on brain receptors as well. Yeah,
[01:46:01] absolutely. And I mean, Health Canada has approved the
[01:46:04] generic versions of Ozempic, making it even more accessible,
[01:46:07] I would imagine with cost. I mean,
[01:46:09] do you find that patients are asking more for this drug?
[01:46:12] And do you feel any pressure in any sort of way to kind of
[01:46:16] deliver that to your patients? I would say that in my practice
[01:46:19] in Vancouver, so I also work in rural locations around Canada,
[01:46:23] then I probably get at least one patient per day asking me
[01:46:26] to prescribe this kind of medication and or following up
[01:46:29] on a patient I've already prescribed this medication to.
[01:46:32] Right now, about one in 10 adults in
[01:46:33] Canada are taking a medication like this. And this is a huge
[01:46:36] explosion of use compared to about five years ago when it
[01:46:39] was first popularized when in the US,
[01:46:41] they approved semaglutide, which is generic Ozempic for
[01:46:44] weight loss. And so people are just looking for effective
[01:46:47] weight loss measures. And this really looks like a solution
[01:46:50] for many people. Yeah. And so, you know,
[01:46:52] what are your concerns then as a family
[01:46:54] Doctor Who is looking to prescribe some of these to
[01:46:57] their patients? Side effects are a major
[01:46:59] concern for me. So I have started patients on these kind
[01:47:02] of medications and then they have too much nausea or
[01:47:04] Constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain,
[01:47:06] fatigue or some of the common side effects and they have to
[01:47:09] stop them. Also, there are certain conditions
[01:47:12] that are contraindications, like you have a certain kind of
[01:47:15] family history or personal history of thyroid cancer or if
[01:47:18] you have a history of gallbladder disease or pancreas
[01:47:20] disease that can have severe side effects. And then
[01:47:23] something you also need to remember is like
[01:47:25] any kind of diet intervention, that if you stop it,
[01:47:28] often the weight just comes right back on. So about two
[01:47:30] months after you stop medications like Ozempic,
[01:47:33] typically patients start getting weight again and by one
[01:47:35] to two years off it, unless they have made major
[01:47:38] lifestyle changes like with diet and exercise,
[01:47:40] they'll gain back all the weight. So it's not a magic
[01:47:43] bullet. It does require lifestyle interventions like
[01:47:45] healthy diet and exercise for long term results. Yeah,
[01:47:48] we have about 3 seconds here. So just quickly,
[01:47:50] what do you see as kind of the short term future then of this
[01:47:53] drug that now of course is hopefully going to be, you know,
[01:47:56] prescribed in a generic level, so much more accessible to the
[01:47:59] regular person? Well, I see more and more patients
[01:48:02] requesting these kinds of medications and more and more
[01:48:04] doctors prescribing them. There have been pop up virtual
[01:48:07] clinics, all kinds of different ways
[01:48:09] that patients can now access these medications. And really I
[01:48:12] think the weight loss industry in Canada is worth billions of
[01:48:15] dollars. And this is just the demand for this kind of
[01:48:17] medication is another manifestation of that. Absolutely. Well, thank you so much,

[02:07:52] Trump described new warnings about AI as a hoax,
[02:07:56] saying the only control or guardrails that AI needs is a
[02:08:00] strong and smart high IQ president. Warning,
[02:08:03] don't kill the golden goose. It comes after a whistleblower
[02:08:07] warned that AI could kill humanity. You're building a
[02:08:10] human level or superhuman
[02:08:12] able mind without understanding what it wants or thinks or the
[02:08:16] way it thinks. And I think that intrinsically should be quite
[02:08:20] scary. Well, industry leaders are seeking
[02:08:22] regulation and a development slowdown. I don't think I fully
[02:08:26] just appreciated what it would actually be like when the
[02:08:29] progress was as fast as it was. These pleas are being met with
[02:08:33] skepticism by the White House. I feel a little bit weird about
[02:08:36] the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind
[02:08:40] of coming to the government and begging the government
[02:08:43] regulate them. It feels a little bit to me like a bit of
[02:08:47] a Trojan horse. The Trump administration has long framed
[02:08:50] AI development as a race between the US and China. I've
[02:08:54] said it from the beginning, whoever wins AI,
[02:08:56] and we're leading by a lot, whoever wins AI wins. In
[02:09:00] Beijing, there are also concerns about
[02:09:02] AI development, whether it poses threats to the
[02:09:05] Communist Party's rule and what it means for cyber security.
[02:09:09] Tech discussions will come up when President Xi Jinping
[02:09:12] visits Washington next week.
[02:09:14] It doesn't matter who builds the AI if the AI does not stay
[02:09:18] on a leash. Whatever decisions are made,
[02:09:20] the stakes could not be higher after a summer of disturbing
[02:09:24] discovery. Over the past couple of months,
[02:09:26] there have been real instances of AI's breaking out of
[02:09:30] containment, doing things that they were not
[02:09:32] instructed to do. Researchers looking at those events got a
[02:09:36] bit spooked. The closer people looked,
[02:09:38] the worse it got. Deck giants are expected to have an
[02:09:41] opportunity to discuss this with the president in person
[02:09:45] as a summit is being organized by the White House. So Donald
[02:09:49] Trump seems to view this as a race with China. But. But there
[02:09:52] are certainly other reasons why he may not want this to slow

[02:29:24] but over time, if it doesn't translate into
[02:29:27] sustained consumers and sales, direct revenue,
[02:29:30] then it hasn't been successful.
[02:29:33] Back on the ice, Madeline Skis US is trying to
[02:29:36] drown out the noise and keep showing what women in sport are
[02:29:50] welcome often reserved for, well,
[02:29:52] hockey stars. Reed was part of a fundraising event to try to
[02:29:56] save 5 libraries in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. I
[02:29:59] just wanted to do it because, you know, I think that's what people
[02:30:17] about gay hockey players have been adapted into the wildly
[02:30:21] popular TV show. Last month, Read donated $300,
[02:30:25] 000 to the libraries, which are slated to close due
[02:30:28] to financial issues. This weekend's event brought in
[02:30:32] another 70 000, drawing people from as far away
[02:30:35] as Poland. The situations if it's a bit worse,
[02:30:38] like the queer people aren't really protected. So seeing
[02:30:42] like happy,
[02:30:44] sorry. This really makes me hope for a better future. Save
[02:30:47] our libraries. Save our libraries. In July,
[02:30:50] this protest began peacefully with people concerned about
[02:30:53] libraries, but later turned violent,
[02:30:56] with people demonstrating against a whole host of issues.
[02:31:00] The Nova Scotia Premier was swarmed,
[02:31:02] his car windshield smashed
[02:31:05] from Houston's Progressive Conservative government is
[02:31:09] confronting a $1.2 billion deficit. The government has
[02:31:12] said it is grateful for Reed's help,
[02:31:14] but will not allocate additional funding. We need
[02:31:17] sustainable funding, which includes annual increases
[02:31:21] for inflation and other standard increases to cost. I
[02:31:24] think my message to all politicians is that libraries
[02:31:27] are an essential service. They're like the foundation of
[02:31:31] all of our communities. They're honestly like the like the
[02:31:35] backbone of democratic society,
[02:31:37] the libraries say reads Generosity will buy more time,
[02:31:40] but the branches will still close if they don't receive
[02:36:12] Canadian businesses are feeling the pinch as the tariff dispute
[02:36:15] with the US intensifies, but now owners are pivoting and
[02:36:19] focusing heavily on shielding their customers from the
[02:36:22] impacts. So if you recall back couple years ago,
[02:36:25] we were hit with a tariff as well and we were very fortunate
[02:36:28] back then that Harley-Davidson, the Motor Company,
[02:36:31] they ate all the tariffs and they didn't pass any of that on
[02:36:35] to the customers. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are
[02:36:38] primarily imported from the US, and they are among the products
[02:36:42] that are impacted by Canada's
[02:36:43] 50% retaliatory tariffs on American goods. Anytime that
[02:36:47] there's a big increase like that to any price,
[02:36:50] it's hard to pass that along to the customer. So us as a US,
[02:36:54] as a local dealer and a Motor Company,
[02:36:56] we do what we can to support the customers. However,
[02:37:00] Lafrance says the business is in a more fortunate position.
[02:37:04] Our inventory currently in our store right now is not tariffed
[02:37:08] and it's still at the original pricing. And so,
[02:37:11] and we're probably not going to receive any more motorcycles
[02:37:15] for the rest of this year. So we may,
[02:37:17] we're hoping we're going to dodge a bullet. Meanwhile,
[02:37:21] the Canadian company Iceberg Vodka is grappling with Trump's
[02:37:25] recent ban on Canadian imports, which includes alcohol. Now
[02:37:28] we're all just trudging through all of this uncertainty and
[02:37:32] volatility right now. It's this kind of uncertainty that's
[02:37:36] forcing the company to adapt on the fly as constant change
[02:37:40] becomes the new normal. We've been dealing with sort of the
[02:37:43] threat of tariffs ever since.
[02:37:46] We've sort of changed our game plan accordingly. To say we're
[02:37:50] into plan BC&D is would be an understatement,
[02:37:53] but Chicolini says pricing won't change. The Distillery
[02:37:56] plans to keep production steady, pivoting to expand its Canadian
[02:38:01] footprint and hunt for new global markets while banking on
[02:38:04] local consumers to help make up the difference. We're hoping
[02:38:08] that the Canadian consumer will step up and and support local
[02:38:12] products, Canadian made Canadian owned products and rugged
[02:38:16] Fog. Harley-Davidson is hoping for that same support. People
[02:38:20] should know that we are a Newfoundland owned and operated

[02:38:33] the same. As the trade war continues to make the future
[02:38:36] less and less predictable, owners and managers like a
[02:38:39] friend are hoping the US midterm election will turn the
[02:38:42] tide, allowing business owners to
[02:38:52] From fake court finds, urgent demands to prevent
[02:38:54] losing medical coverage or family members asking for help.
[02:38:58] Police say these scams are reaching residents all across
[02:39:02] the province. Saskatchewan RCMP say every fraud is unique,
[02:39:06] and while text messages are common,
[02:39:08] so are emails and phone calls. Fraudsters are becoming more
[02:39:12] intelligent in their approaches and the ways that they're
[02:39:16] contacting victims, which means we need to be on
[02:39:19] alert as general citizens when we get these calls
[02:39:22] and and asking those tough questions. Is this legitimate?
[02:39:26] Do I need to make a call? Experts say scammers are
[02:39:29] becoming more sophisticated in the ways they operate. That's
[02:39:33] because AI tools make it easier for attackers to target more
[02:39:37] communities in less time. Even pre AI that attackers really
[02:39:40] just have to have
[02:39:42] will target, you know, thousands of people at the same
[02:39:46] time and they only really need one or two victims to make make
[02:39:50] it worth their while. Since June,
[02:39:53] the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre has processed more than 15,
[02:39:57] 000 fraud reports. It says about 10,
[02:39:59] 000 Canadians have been victims and all told they've lost more
[02:40:03] than $350 million. So how do we protect ourselves?
[02:40:07] Most fraudsters pressure their victims to take immediate
[02:40:11] action, making it hard.
[02:40:13] This says the situation. Both experts recommend the same set
[02:40:17] of actions. Stop and take a step back. Listen to your gut.
[02:40:20] If something feels off, it most certainly is. Do not
[02:40:24] respond or interact with the sender or link and take a
[02:40:27] screenshot of the conversation for future record. Contact
[02:40:31] someone you trust or a legitimate organization and ask
[02:40:34] questions. Official websites are also a quick,
[02:40:37] reliable source to confirm any information. Police also say
[02:40:41] it's important for people to report
[02:40:44] these frauds so authorities can keep track of trends and alert
[02:40:54] Some of the biggest names in AI, including the heads of Open AI,
[02:40:57] Anthropic, and even Elon Musk, are warning that development is
[02:41:02] moving too fast. 1 Insider has even said that AI could kill
[02:41:06] all humans by the end of the decade.
[02:41:09] So what does that message mean for people who are just
[02:41:12] entering the field? We asked University of Windsor
[02:41:15] computer science students how they see the risks. If you
[02:41:18] think it can end the world,
[02:41:20] I think it would be pretty hard for it to end the world. I
[02:41:23] think there's definitely potential for AI to be used in
[02:41:26] a way that might end the world. I think the chances that the
[02:41:29] world has ended just by like a rogue AI is pretty slim,
[02:41:32] especially like with what we have right now. I see it
[02:41:35] usually has like a marketing tool because it kind of feeds
[02:41:38] into the perception that AI is like really powerful and AI has
[02:41:41] a lot of potential to like disrupt and change everything.
[02:41:44] I guess not the first time that day ilab said that everything's
[02:41:48] going to change, The world's going to end, Claude is going to take over.
[02:41:52] So it's a little hard to take it seriously every single time
[02:41:56] they do it. A lot of the security policies,
[02:42:00] the permissions issues and things like that,
[02:42:03] that the development for for that takes longer than the AI
[02:42:08] takes to develop. So there's constantly new ways that the AI
[02:42:12] can find to kind of circumvent security and permissions. And
[02:42:17] so I think in that aspect, that's definitely something
[02:42:21] that needs to be considered.
[02:42:23] And baby, then kind of slowing down on AI
[02:42:26] development is a good idea. I don't know if slowing things
[02:42:30] down is going to work, first of all,
[02:42:32] because when you have new PhD students, a lot of researchers,
[02:42:36] they're excited to come up and with the next thing. So they
[02:42:40] want to really develop things faster. They tell students that
[02:42:44] you are in charge. You have to think of AI as a tool,
[02:42:48] but like any tool, it could be a dangerous tool if
[02:42:51] you don't use it adequately and properly.
[02:44:51] Chances are you seeing the ads for drugs like Ozempic and Will
[02:44:53] Govie. They're known as GLP one drugs. And they've changed the
[02:44:56] way that we deal with obesity and weight loss. They've also
[02:44:59] been a veritable gold mine for drug companies. Now,
[02:45:16] you know, these drugs have been so popular, such a rise in these products.
[02:45:20] What does that mean for you and your practice? Well, the first thing I will say is
[02:45:24] that these medications aren't for everyone who is seeking
[02:45:26] weight loss or diabetes. There are side effects and
[02:45:29] contraindications. But I will also say that for my patients
[02:45:32] who have historically struggled with managing their weight or
[02:45:35] managing their blood sugars, that it is somewhat of a game
[02:45:38] changer. And a major reason is because these kinds of
[02:45:40] medications work on multiple levels. So they increase
[02:45:43] insulin release from your pancreas to deal with sugar
[02:45:46] spikes. They slow down your digestion so it makes you feel
[02:45:49] fuller faster. And also I would say what my patients
[02:45:51] recognize and notice the most is that actually that food
[02:45:55] noise in their brain tends to quiet down because these
[02:45:58] medications act directly on brain receptors as well. Yeah,
[02:46:01] absolutely. And I mean, Health Canada has approved the
[02:46:04] generic versions of Ozempic, making it even more accessible,
[02:46:07] I would imagine with cost. I mean,
[02:46:09] do you find that patients are asking more for this drug?
[02:46:12] And do you feel any pressure in any sort of way to kind of
[02:46:16] deliver that to your patients? I would say that in my practice
[02:46:19] in Vancouver, so I also work in rural locations around Canada,
[02:46:23] then I probably get at least one patient per day asking me
[02:46:26] to prescribe this kind of medication and or following up
[02:46:29] on a patient I've already prescribed this medication to.
[02:46:32] Right now, about one in 10 adults in
[02:46:33] Canada are taking a medication like this. And this is a huge
[02:46:36] explosion of use compared to about five years ago when it
[02:46:39] was first popularized when in the US,
[02:46:41] they approved semaglutide, which is generic Ozempic for
[02:46:44] weight loss. And so people are just looking for effective
[02:46:47] weight loss measures. And this really looks like a solution
[02:46:50] for many people. Yeah. And so, you know,
[02:46:52] what are your concerns then as a family
[02:46:54] Doctor Who is looking to prescribe some of these to
[02:46:57] their patients? Side effects are a major
[02:46:59] concern for me. So I have started patients on these kind
[02:47:02] of medications and then they have too much nausea or
[02:47:04] Constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain,
[02:47:06] fatigue or some of the common side effects and they have to
[02:47:09] stop them. Also, there are certain conditions
[02:47:12] that are contraindications, like you have a certain kind of
[02:47:15] family history or personal history of thyroid cancer or if
[02:47:18] you have a history of gallbladder disease or pancreas
[02:47:20] disease that can have severe side effects. And then
[02:47:23] something you also need to remember is like
[02:47:25] any kind of diet intervention, that if you stop it,
[02:47:28] often the weight just comes right back on. So about two
[02:47:30] months after you stop medications like Ozempic,
[02:47:33] typically patients start getting weight again and by one
[02:47:35] to two years off it, unless they have made major
[02:47:38] lifestyle changes like with diet and exercise,
[02:47:40] they'll gain back all the weight. So it's not a magic
[02:47:43] bullet. It does require lifestyle interventions like
[02:47:45] healthy diet and exercise for long term results. Yeah,
[02:47:48] we have about 3 seconds here. So just quickly,
[02:47:50] what do you see as kind of the short term future then of this
[02:47:53] drug that now of course is hopefully going to be, you know,
[02:47:56] prescribed in a generic level, so much more accessible to the
[02:47:59] regular person? Well, I see more and more patients
[02:48:02] requesting these kinds of medications and more and more
[02:48:04] doctors prescribing them. There have been pop up virtual
[02:48:07] clinics, all kinds of different ways
[02:48:09] that patients can now access these medications. And really I
[02:48:12] think the weight loss industry in Canada is worth billions of
[02:48:15] dollars. And this is just the demand for this kind of
[02:48:17] medication is another manifestation of that.
