[01:01:10] The pair met in the French territory of Saint Pierre and

[01:05:42] U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major change to his
[01:05:44] proposal for a massive triumphal arch in Washington.
[01:05:48] He now says it's going to double as a military complex
[01:05:51] housing snipers and drones. Journalist Kate Fishers in
[01:05:54] Washington with the details.
[01:05:57] Yeah. He put this on his Truth Social platform this morning
[01:06:01] and essentially said that instead of kind of being this
[01:06:05] monument or visitor destination, it was now going to be this
[01:06:09] military complex, which would house drones and
[01:06:12] snipers as well as having them be able to be activated from
[01:06:16] there, as well as being this huge
[01:06:18] storage facility for them as well. He said it would be top
[01:06:22] grade and that there would be no facility like it in the
[01:06:26] world. Well, the National Capital Planning
[01:06:29] Commission have said that it was only ever put to them as a
[01:06:33] visitor destination with an observation deck. So this is
[01:06:37] clearly a huge change in its its reason for being. And they
[01:06:41] say that despite many federal reviews so far of this art. It
[01:06:46] has never been mentioned as being needed for national
[01:06:50] security. The administration is saying they don't believe they
[01:06:54] need congressional approval for this because they say
[01:06:58] Congress around 100 years ago approved a similar kind of arch
[01:07:02] in a similar location. But critics of this are saying that
[01:07:05] now that the the use for this monument has changed,
[01:07:09] there needs to be further scrutiny of what this is. And
[01:07:12] they will be fighting it all the way. That's veterans groups
[01:07:16] as well as historical preservation groups. Let's talk
[01:07:20] a bit about preservation, specifically in the city of
[01:07:23] Washington, because just earlier this week,
[01:07:26] Kate, we had news that the president
[01:07:29] was threatening to tear down the Kennedy Centre
[01:07:32] because he couldn't keep his name on it. We've seen him
[01:07:35] demolish parts of the White House to create this ballroom.
[01:07:39] We've seen some disastrous renovations of the Washington
[01:07:42] reflecting Pool. I just wonder how the archway now falls into
[01:07:46] this vision that the president has for Washington.
[01:07:53] Well, I think there are a lot of
[01:07:55] similarities. He's really trying to put his stamp on the
[01:07:58] city before he ends his term in office. You can probably see
[01:08:02] behind me that the East wing of the of the White House has kind
[01:08:06] of vanished since he's been here. And yes,
[01:08:09] this arch is another of those attempts. A lot of analysts
[01:08:12] suggesting that the reason now that he's suggesting it becomes
[01:08:16] a military facility is a way of trying to persuade and persuade
[01:08:20] authorities that it is necessary for national security.
[01:08:23] Because there have been so many complaints about the idea of
[01:08:27] this huge arch being built, not least from veterans who say
[01:08:31] it will over shadow the Arlington National Cemetery
[01:08:34] where so many fallen service members are buried. So, yes,
[01:08:38] I think it is symptomatic of what Donald Trump is trying to
[01:08:42] do in Washington. And this argument of making it as part
[01:08:45] of a national security need rather than just something he
[01:08:49] wants to do is also being echoed here in now this. These

[01:23:00] the question of the tariffs is part of the election. And our
[01:23:04] answer is that we have the best team. The nationalist but
[01:23:08] staunchly federalist CAQ, deeply unpopular in the polls
[01:23:12] until recently, is using the trade war to
[01:23:14] attempt a political comeback. Leader Kirsten Frechette
[01:23:18] arguing Quebeckers needs stability.
[01:23:21] The Mama now is not the time to launch a referendum,
[01:23:24] she says. In fact, it's the worst moment in the
[01:23:27] last 50 years. There's no party right now that is trying to
[01:23:31] make Quebec independence the question of the ballot. This

[01:24:23] straightforward. The Canadian counter tariffs range anywhere
[01:24:26] from 25 to 50%. If you're buying, say,
[01:24:28] American milk or cheese, American honey or American
[01:24:31] makeup, you'll likely be paying more as
[01:24:33] soon as the tariffed inventory hits the shelves,
[01:24:36] keeping in mind that retailers still have some under tariff
[01:24:40] stock to sell first.

[01:24:44] on raw materials like steel, aluminum and paper start to
[01:24:48] show up. The consumer side will show up sooner because that's
[01:24:51] on finished goods. But the long term impact,
[01:24:54] or medium term I guess, is that as Canadian suppliers
[01:24:57] buy some of the industrial raw materials like packaging and
[01:25:01] things of that nature from the US,
[01:25:03] that'll start to show up in consumer goods over the next
[01:25:06] several months as those products are made and
[01:25:09] distributed to Canadian retailers. So what are the
[01:25:12] major grocers doing? Metro, who own Food Basics,
[01:25:15] say they haven't seen price
[01:25:17] increases from suppliers due to the tariffs. Yeah, law blah,
[01:25:20] who own law, laws, No frills, Shoppers Drug Mart. Several
[01:25:23] other grocery store banners say they're pushing back on
[01:25:27] suppliers when they believe that increases aren't justified,
[01:25:30] but when they are justified. When the terrorists increase
[01:25:33] the cost for Loblaws, the company says that that is
[01:25:36] going to reflect on the shelf. Penny for penny. To make things
[01:25:40] easier, they are marking products with
[01:25:42] the letter T to identify that it's been impacted by tariffs.
[01:25:45] They're also keeping up with the Maple Leaf mark to identify
[01:25:49] products of Canada or things made in Canada. The product of
[01:25:52] Canada is when 98
[01:25:53] percent is from Canada. Made in Canada is 51%. And then you
[01:25:56] have other things like design in Canada. Think you know what,
[01:26:00] we're possible. If you can choose a product that has some
[01:26:03] form of Canadian content, then you're helping Canadian.
[01:26:06] If you want to avoid buying tariff goods at the grocery
[01:26:09] store. It's pretty simple if you take the time to check the
[01:26:13] labels. But as we move out of Canadian growing season,
[01:26:16] that's when things become a little bit more challenging. We
[01:26:19] can still buy Canadian milk. We can still buy Canadian cheese,
[01:26:23] beef, pork, frozen vegetables, all of those sorts of things.
[01:26:26] We can still buy Canadian, but in December and January
[01:26:29] we're not going to buy domestic broccoli and we're not going to
[01:26:32] buy domestic Brussels sprouts. So come winter time,
[01:26:35] you can still avoid tariffs on a lot of goods,
[01:26:37] but if you want to avoid them entirely,
[01:26:39] you might have to swap out some of those weekly staples in your
[01:26:43] grocery basket.
[01:26:48] Gas prices are up on average. It's the highest it's been in
[01:26:51] the province since 2022. How do you feel about the price at the
[01:26:56] pump? Gas prices are way too high man
[01:26:58] $20 fill up and a $20 fill up anymore,
[01:27:01] that's for sure. I really feel sorry for those persons who are
[01:27:05] really pressured and got lots of
[01:27:09] problems trying to make ends meet.
[01:27:13] I wish there was something everyone could do to reduce it
[01:27:16] because everything we do here in this province is affected by
[01:27:19] gasoline and especially the diesel. Just look at the price
[01:27:23] today. Well, it's not fair. It's gotta come
[01:27:25] down at some point. You know, it's crazy man. And like,
[01:27:28] I get it. It's like my car used to cost $60 to fill up and now
[01:27:32] it costs like 80. That's a lot of money when I have to fill it
[01:27:35] up 3 or 4 * a month, you know? Right now,
[01:27:37] gas is $2.19 in the Avalon Peninsula,
[01:27:39] 223 and Central 220 in Corner Brook and 2:27 in Labrador West.
[01:27:43] Gas price analyst says that this province has among the
[01:27:46] highest prices in the country, at least for now. When it comes
[01:27:50] to gas, Newfoundland, the most expensive province by
[01:27:54] quite a stretch. 217.9 for gasoline. That's even about $0.
[01:27:57] 13 above PEI. Who's it? About 204 BC at 198. Everyone
[01:28:01] else below that the cheapest, Alberta at about 177 today. So
[01:28:04] Newfoundland tends to be the highest for now. It looks like
[01:28:08] the trend for the foreseeable future would be that diesel
[01:28:22] people could walk, take the bus or carpool until
[01:28:25] those prices come down. John Harris, CBC News, St. John's.

[01:28:34] you may have cringed at the price at the pump,
[01:28:37] but for those who rely on diesel,
[01:28:39] the picture is a lot more daunting. Of course is bad
[01:28:42] because it will be increase everything right?
[01:28:45] That's not a good for the company or for the owner
[01:28:48] operator. Also because sometime I filled up diesel from outside
[01:28:52] the Alberta they always prefer to You need to fill up your
[01:28:56] fuel in the Arboretum. 1 truck driver I spoke to told me a
[01:29:00] gravel company refused to deliver to his
[01:29:02] construction site because of diesel prices. Others say while
[01:29:06] it doesn't impact their personal pockets,
[01:29:08] they are noticing a significant difference in their daily stop
[01:29:12] for fuel. For our company, I think right now we are
[01:29:15] spending double, yeah,
[01:29:19] all the work is going on. Sometimes we have to stay home
[01:29:22] just to wait for the loads because of the digit prices.
[01:29:25] But the price of diesel goes beyond those who fill up at the
[01:29:28] station. Diesel powers much of the economy, including freight trucks, trains,
[01:29:32] agriculture and construction. For people who are the backbone
[01:29:36] of the economy, the trucks, the trains,
[01:29:38] the jet planes that move all the goods,
[01:29:40] there's a need for them to continue to do it. And so
[01:29:43] they'll they'll have to do it. They have to hope they can pass
[01:29:46] through their higher costs to to their customers.
[01:29:49] Says this isn't just a Canadian issue either,
[01:29:52] It's worldwide. The oil issue from the Strait of Hormuz and
[01:29:57] Middle East is bad and so that's pushing oil prices up.
[01:30:01] But even more it's the the refineries that are struggling.
[01:30:05] So the world is short millions of barrels a day of refined
[01:30:09] products that normally would be available on the market.
[01:30:13] Madison says even if prices go down as we get more supply,
[01:30:17] there isn't enough refining capacity
[01:30:20] to turn it into the things we use. As for the truck drivers I
[01:30:24] spoke to, they say they are concerned
[01:30:26] about the potential of diesel going up and also the cost of
[01:30:30] regular gas getting out of hand. Nicole Healey, CBC News,

[01:32:45] We're here because things need to change in regards to
[01:32:48] violence against women, in particular intimate partner
[01:32:52] violence. There are too many women dying from intimate
[01:32:55] partner violence and and overall too many women are
[01:32:58] still victims of it. Several hundred women and allies
[01:33:01] marched from Dorchester Square to Place de Morales decrying
[01:33:04] violence against women. You really want to make a
[01:33:07] difference. So here you'll find many people from different
[01:33:10] shelters, different organizations,
[01:33:12] women centres. The timing of this mobilization is
[01:33:15] intentional.
[01:33:16] Time is just four days ahead at the Quebec party leaders final
[01:33:20] debate and their message is clear. Well, promises are fine,
[01:33:24] but we want commitments, you know,
[01:33:26] that we want first of all, investments in their resources
[01:33:30] for women's security. We want also like prevention education.
[01:33:34] We need the housing crisis also to get better. And you know,
[01:33:38] these are all factors that make women who are victims really
[01:33:43] vulnerable to get out of that abusive relationship. 5
[01:33:46] organizations supporting
[01:33:48] women who are victims of conjugal violence joined forces
[01:33:52] to put an end to what they're calling a national crisis. At
[01:33:55] SOS we receive between 50, 000 and 60,
[01:34:02] not enough is done. 17 women have died from intimate partner
[01:34:06] violence in Quebec so far this year,
[01:34:08] according to the Montreal police. Five of them happened
[01:34:11] in the Montreal area. That's already more than an all of
[01:34:15] 2025, when 14 Quebec women died and
[01:34:17] alleged intimate partner violence cases.
[01:34:20] And I'm here because we need to put an end to it,
[01:34:24] like the next one is still alive,
[01:34:26] so we better fight now. I came to support because I was a
[01:34:30] victim from domestic violence too for five years. And now I'm
[01:34:34] just trying to help. The March also focus on the fact that
[01:34:38] many of the victims in 2026 are women of colour. One advocate
[01:34:42] notes that Indigenous women are often at the top of the list.
[01:34:48] This specific no reality this time
[01:34:53] in a response as a trees work underneath gone. While members
[01:34:57] of the political class were present on Saturday,
[01:35:00] organizers stressed that what's needed are solutions that can
[01:35:04] be quickly put into effect. The fact that we're here today,
[01:35:07] it shows that we need more than hope, you know,
[01:35:10] we need to have real commitments and we need to see
[01:35:14] that they can be implemented quickly.
[01:35:19] My grandchildren are a fearful of the future and I'm here as a
[01:35:22] grandparent to say not good enough. David Swan is with the
[01:35:26] group Seniors Climate Witness. 15 years ago,
[01:35:28] he was the leader of the Alberta Liberal Party,
[01:35:31] and he says that since then, the climate crisis has only
[01:35:35] gotten worse. And it's so profoundly heartbreaking to see
[01:35:39] a federal government that has championed the environment do
[01:35:42] anything but now. Swan was among the hundreds who marched
[01:35:46] through downtown Ottawa yesterday, waving
[01:35:49] signs in wearing T-shirts supporting climate action. They
[01:35:52] pushed back against the federal Liberals recent climate policy,
[01:35:56] and many came from across the country to do it. We've stopped
[01:35:59] in about 20 cities. Michael Pilani is a cofounder of
[01:36:02] Seniors Climate Witness. He says the group collected
[01:36:05] stories and photos of climate disasters as they caravanned
[01:36:09] their way to Ottawa by electric vehicle. So we simply want to
[01:36:12] deliver these photos so that MP's,
[01:36:14] when they're discussing energy policy and pipelines,
[01:36:17] they have a vivid face, a picture
[01:36:19] of how climate change is impacting people across the
[01:36:23] country. Seniors Climate Witness planned to gather
[01:36:26] outside the House of Commons on Tuesday to deliver their
[01:41:04] Kirsten Hankey's family says her death last month was
[01:41:07] preventable. She started a home with me.
[01:41:12] We have animals, we have a house,
[01:41:15] we have all these memories that she doesn't get to experience
[01:41:19] anymore.
[01:41:21] Kirby says Hankie, who was his partner,
[01:41:23] fell at the entrance of their home and broke her ankle. But
[01:41:27] when she arrived at Royal University Hospital for surgery
[01:41:31] days later, Kirby says the staff sent her
[01:41:33] home. We were met with nurses that were dumbfounded as to who
[01:41:37] we even were.
[01:41:40] The first two hours of our hospital visit was spent
[01:41:43] explaining what her injury was,
[01:41:47] explaining why we're here and what surgery needed to be done.
[01:41:51] Five days later, Hankie collapsed at home. Her
[01:41:54] family says a blood clot that had developed in her ankle
[01:41:57] reached her lungs.
[01:41:59] She was taken off life support on August 20th and a statement
[01:42:03] to CBC, the Saskatchewan Health
[01:42:05] Authority, calls what happened to Hankey a
[01:42:07] critical incident and it's initiated a formal legislative
[01:42:11] process to review the incident and disclose the findings to
[01:42:14] her family. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrell said in a
[01:42:17] statement that he expects the SHA to thoroughly examine the
[01:42:21] circumstances surrounding the incident,
[01:42:23] but her family only found out about that review when CBC
[01:42:27] shared the SH a statement with them. It shouldn't
[01:42:30] even be news or an e-mail that that should have to be sent.
[01:42:34] It's obvious on the
[01:42:37] in the situation at whole that it should absolutely be
[01:42:40] reviewed. There's no question it should. A Ministry of Health
[01:42:44] report shows there were 88 critical incidents in the 2025
[01:42:47] to 2026 fiscal year. The Saskatchewan NDP says it points
[01:42:51] to wider issues around surgery wait times. This is
[01:42:54] are not one off
[01:42:58] instances.
[01:43:00] There are people and families and consequences. For now,
[01:43:18] And this is a deep fake doctor Francois Marquis. It's an AI
[01:43:22] generated video of his face and voice used to advertise drugs
[01:43:27] on social media. And this time I'm selling something that is
[01:43:31] supposed to fix your joints. I had patients, actual victims,
[01:43:35] come for me in the ICU wanting to get their money back. And
[01:43:39] he's not the only prominent Canadian physician being deep
[01:43:43] faked during the aggressive wave of mandatory COVID vaccination
[01:43:48] back in the pandemic, online ads used an AI generated
[01:43:51] version of Canada's former top Dr. Teresa Tam,
[01:43:54] the Canadian government Department of Health and BC's
[01:43:57] provincial health officer, Doctor Bonnie Henry. It is
[01:44:00] still happening on and off. It's very disturbing. The
[01:44:03] challenge now is AI video keeps getting better and tougher to
[01:44:07] spot.
[01:44:09] One study found up to half of individuals couldn't tell the
[01:44:12] difference between authentic videos and deep fakes. I think
[01:44:16] that anytime content is being pushed to you and they're
[01:44:19] selling a product, that should be a major red flag.
[01:44:23] That's because of strict standards enforced by medical
[01:44:26] colleges in Canada, which don't allow doctors to
[01:44:29] advertise regulated drugs or medical devices. The federal
[01:44:33] government says anyone who may have been a victim of fraud or
[01:44:37] cyber crime can file a police report
[01:44:39] or contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre. There's a faint
[01:44:43] Paul and a fake Brad running around TikTok,
[01:44:46] but doctors who've tried those routes say fake ads are tough
[01:44:50] to take down. I started complaining to the police and
[01:44:53] basically I was told that there's nothing they can really
[01:44:57] do. The bottom line? Be skeptical of any video
[01:45:00] showing a doctor pedaling health products before you hand
[01:53:52] Wake up, Daddy.
