[00:05:26] Geological Survey Agency gives us details of
[00:05:30] yet another earth tremor in the nation's capital. And the minister of
[00:05:34] solid mineral development urges us to remain
[00:05:36] calm.
[00:05:42] The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency has released an alert
[00:05:46] stating that earth tremors shook several buildings on
[00:05:50] Tuesday August the 4th, 2026.
[00:05:53] According to the report, the NGSA stated that it recorded the
[00:05:57] earth tremor at approximately
[00:05:59] 11:23:27 am, noting that it
[00:06:03] originated from a 1 kmter debt and spreading across
[00:06:07] a distance of 4 kilometers in 5 seconds.
[00:06:11] Although Nigeria... is not located a major tectonic plate
[00:06:15] boundary and is generally regarded as having low
[00:06:18] seismic activity. isolated earth tremers have been
[00:06:22] recorded in parts the country over the years, including in Abuja,
[00:06:26] kaduna, kogi, or your and belsa
[00:06:29] states. since the year 2000, Nigeria has
[00:06:33] experienced a handful of documented earth tremor
[00:06:37] episodes. most have been low magnitude interplay tremors
[00:06:41] rather than destructive earthquake. In August the year
[00:06:45] 2000, earth tremor in Jushi Kwary area the
[00:06:48] FCT was one the first documented earth tremors in the nation's
[00:06:52] capital. In September of 2018, the earth
[00:06:56] tremor which occurred in Mbape, Maitama, Katanke,
[00:06:59] Buari and surrounding areas is one the most significant in the history
[00:07:03] the nation's capital. In September of 2024,
[00:07:07] another earth tremor happened at Pape, Katanke
[00:07:11] and adjoining community.
[00:07:15] Back in September of 2024,
[00:07:18] we went to Papi, a densely populated area within the Bowari areal
[00:07:22] council to see for ourselves what was happening with these earth
[00:07:25] tremers. The tremor which
[00:07:29] began few days before had raised concerns among residents the
[00:07:32] area.
[00:07:36] This one around, just a small, this is
[00:07:40] not be like before. and that time we
[00:07:43] happen towards that the call the government's
[00:07:46] attention and the government enter
[00:07:49] here to do the necessary thing which they supposed to
[00:07:53] do and you watch that time

[00:09:26] first time that there will be earth tremers in pape
[00:09:29] district. this was pape in
[00:09:32] 2018. at the time, the residents the area also
[00:09:36] complained of earth tremors, but at that time they blamed the
[00:09:40] tremors on the incessant blasting. the queries in the
[00:09:43] area, almost four times i had
[00:09:47] it, i thought that maybe the house collapsed behind my
[00:09:50] building, i quickly ran inside, but at the end the
[00:09:54] day didn't see anything, when i heard
[00:09:57] the sound, i was the whole room was shaking, as in the building was
[00:10:01] shaking, i still wanted to collapse, so i quickly
[00:10:04] stood up and went outside, when i when i got outside, i
[00:10:08] saw i thought i would see my neighbors around, but nobody came out all of

[00:11:02] origin is at mpape, it may have been
[00:11:06] triggered elsewhere, but because the relative weakness around
[00:11:10] mpape, that's why we are feeling it around
[00:11:14] that area. the present administration has done so much
[00:11:18] in terms of assisting the agency in its mandate of generating
[00:11:22] geoscience data. so recently we're acquired
[00:11:25] some six sets of
[00:11:29] uh seismic monitoring or earthquake monitoring equipment,
[00:11:33] we are presently in the process of deploying
[00:11:37] them in different zones the
[00:11:41] country determined by the geology of course in kaduna, in
[00:11:45] abuja, in yola, in
[00:11:48] bad, calabar and
[00:11:51] alka, so definitely by the time these equipments are
[00:11:55] deployed, it will give us a quick information as
[00:11:59] to where probably you could have uh this kind of event
[00:12:03] so that you want people beforehand even before it
[00:12:06] occurs, so we feel that in the next one month or so
[00:12:10] we will have uh deployed all these sismic
[00:12:14] equipments and to be to to
[00:12:16] enhance the safety of uh
[00:12:20] citizens of
[00:12:22] Nigeria.
[00:12:26] In 2018 we made our way on motorbikes to the queries accused of carrying out
[00:12:30] blasts that the residents at the time blamed for the
[00:12:33] tremors.
[00:12:37] At the time this query had been functioning in Pape for 20 years
[00:12:40] and the managers in 2018 expressed
[00:12:44] worry over the encroachment of buildings to the site.
[00:12:48] The site engineer at the time took us through the process of blasting and said there
[00:12:52] was no correlation between blasting. activities and the earth
[00:12:56] tremos experienced in the area, plasting we
[00:13:00] supposed to be very cautious, okay, we control this
[00:13:03] process very well, before we started
[00:13:06] plasting, we send to our
[00:13:10] neighbors, we have another company here, they are never for us,
[00:13:14] we inform them that we will plast by each by which

[00:14:02] assures the safety of lives and property the general
[00:14:05] public. In 2024,
[00:14:09] residents were told not to panic as they experienced another series of earth
[00:14:13] tremors in the same area. A statement issued in 2024 by
[00:14:17] the minister of solid minerals, Mr. Deli Alake read
[00:14:20] quote, over the past few days our monitoring station at Katanke
[00:14:24] has recorded several ground motions with increase in
[00:14:27] intensity and frequency from September 13 to the
[00:14:31] 16th. The tremors are caused by accumulated stress along
[00:14:34] identified faults and have multiple epicenters, mainly
[00:14:38] around Pape and Katankwe. Their intensity ranges from weak to
[00:14:42] light, posing a very low threat. I advise residents not
[00:14:46] to panic as these tremors are low in intensity. We are
[00:14:50] actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as
[00:14:54] needed. Our NGSA seismic stations are also being
[00:14:57] monitored in real time for prompt alerts any major
[00:15:01] events, and quote. Fast forward to

[00:15:08] Mr. Adi Alake is again urging residence the federal capital
[00:15:12] territory to remain calm following the August 4th,
[00:15:15] 2026 earth tremor that shook several buildings in

[00:15:22] media, the minister is urging resident. in the territory to go about their
[00:15:26] daily activities without fear assuring them that proactive
[00:15:30] measures have been deployed to ensure the safety of lives and
[00:15:33] properties. further more, the ministers directed the Nigerian Geological
[00:15:37] the agency to provide hourly updates to him for
[00:15:41] regular review and possible escalation to other relevant
[00:15:45] agencies if the need arises. Africa is
