Stay with us, there's a lot to [00:01:42] uncover in today's [00:01:43] episode. [00:01:58] And now, the news. [00:02:05] "the Nigeria revenue service has unveiled new tagline, [00:02:09] reaffirming its commitment to building public trust and supporting [00:02:13] sustainable economic growth through effective revenue [00:02:16] administration. JAS has the [00:02:19] of reports. The new tagline inspiring trust sustaining [00:02:22] growth was [00:02:23] of officially in onveiled recently by the executive chairman [00:02:26] of the Nigeria revenue service Zak Adiji. alongside [00:02:30] members [00:02:31] of the services management team. the new [00:02:33] of identity followed weeks of deliberation aimed at capturing the NRS's [00:02:37] commitment to quality service delivery and a stronger relationship with [00:02:41] taxpayers. the NRS tagline competition reminds us that the [00:02:44] identity [00:02:45] of the Nigerian revenue service is not shaped by top management [00:02:48] alone, [00:02:49] it is strengthened by the people who make this revenue administration what [00:02:53] we are. what we avail today is more than a tagline. it is [00:02:56] a distillation of our [00:02:58] of ambition. the NRS we are building. must be modern, [00:03:02] integrated, technology enabled, data [00:03:05] driven and responsive, so let us internalize it [00:03:09] when we launch it, let it reflect in our attitude, in the way [00:03:13] we carry [00:03:14] of ourselves of and the way we help our country to deliver on the [00:03:17] a mandate [00:03:17] of the president. the service says the tagline reflects its [00:03:21] belief that [00:03:22] of public trust is fundamental to effective revenue collection, [00:03:26] while increased revenue supports Nigeria's long-term development. [00:03:30] It is also positioned as both a promise and guiding principle for [00:03:34] the [00:03:34] a NRS as it works to deliver better services and strengthen its [00:03:38] engagement to taxpayers across the country. The new [00:03:42] tagline, inspiring trust, sustaining [00:03:45] growth means a lot, because that aligns [00:03:49] with the vision [00:03:50] of the executive chairman. When we [00:03:54] a sustain trust, it helps us to serve [00:03:58] our taxpayers who are the... customers right, and then when we [00:04:02] serve them right, with trust, we will be able to [00:04:05] generate the revenue that we need to generate for the [00:04:09] running [00:04:10] of the country, when we do that, [00:04:13] definitely we can be sure that the growth in the economy will [00:04:17] be sustained. this was a complete inhouse bottom up [00:04:21] exercise, and that's what we've seen, our new tax administration was [00:04:25] designed and built entirely in [00:04:28] house, the process. the competition was straight forward [00:04:32] actually and i appreciate the [00:04:35] chairman [00:04:37] of the service for making it an in-house competition [00:04:41] um getting ideas from [00:04:42] a the staff actually so our core values at the NRS are [00:04:46] values that inspire [00:04:47] trust so [00:04:51] once that trust is well established [00:04:54] then the growth comes from what we actually do from our [00:04:59] of mandate of ' [00:05:03] and collecting [00:05:03] taxes. The Nigeria revenue service has called for improved productivity, effective [00:05:07] time management and stronger team [00:05:10] of collaboration to enhance tax payer experience. the call was made a [00:05:14] workshop organized as part of activities marking customer service [00:05:18] week 2026. just retour head again [00:05:21] reports. speaking at the event, SA customer [00:05:25] centricity Mrs. said excellent [00:05:28] customer service requires staff to focus on meaningful [00:05:31] results, meet deadlines and respond promptly to taxpayers [00:05:35] and colleagues. this week provides an [00:05:38] opportunity to celebrate the people. [00:05:42] service happen, we recognize our [00:05:46] colleagues who attend to tax payers or our [00:05:49] customers, as we call them, respond to [00:05:52] inquiries, resolve complaints, support [00:05:56] operations and work behind the scenes to [00:06:00] keep the service moving, she links the [00:06:04] message to the services new tagline, inspiring trust sustaining [00:06:07] growth, urgent staff to go the external in building tax [00:06:11] payer trust, customer service week is asking us to now go [00:06:15] the extra mile, so if we go the extra mile in [00:06:19] inspiring trust and that [00:06:22] we then sustain our growth, group [00:06:26] director, medium and emerging tax, mr. dengar daniels [00:06:30] stressed the importance of collaboration across [00:06:33] departments, noting that tax payers experience the [00:06:37] NRS as one organization, customer service [00:06:40] we [00:06:44] productivity, effective tax and [00:06:47] team collaboration is [00:06:50] particularly [00:06:52] up as we continue to advance [00:06:56] over the service and [00:07:00] reform, especially as it relates to as the medium [00:07:04] anders directorate. the workshop also [00:07:08] highlighted initiatives such as ref 360 which are [00:07:11] designed to simplify tax processes and improve [00:07:15] efficiency for tax payers. The event concluded with call for [00:07:19] customer service to become a continuous culture across the NRS [00:07:23] rather than an activity limited to customer service [00:07:26] week. meanwile, the Nigeria Revenue service, [00:07:29] NRS has warned members the public against a [00:07:33] forgilent recruitment notice circulating on social media and other [00:07:37] online platforms. the service says the notice falsely claims [00:07:41] to offer employment opportunity. communities within the agency and should be [00:07:45] disregarded. [00:07:46] Sir Amachido has that reports in [00:07:49] a public notice, the NRS identified [00:07:51] the advertisement titled Federal Inland revenue service, [00:07:55] FIRS job vacancy replacement as fake and said it did not [00:07:59] originate from the service. The service said the notice directs interested [00:08:03] applicants to submit their personal information to an email address [00:08:07] that is not associated with the NRS. The services thereforeing [00:08:10] members the public to exercise. discussion and avoid responding to [00:08:14] fraudulent recruitment advertisements and that's a wrap on [00:08:18] the news, let's join Mariam on the vox pop [00:08:20] segments. [00:10:36] hello, [00:10:42] welcome [00:10:42] to knowledge zone. we dive deeper into the interesting [00:10:46] conversations had on the streets, i rem your host, ashu [00:10:50] abe. today's episode will be answering the question, [00:10:53] where can tax? [00:10:55] they are large a complaint of issue that is unresolved by the [00:10:59] relevant tax authority. other tax [00:11:02] administration act 2025, where a taxpayer has an [00:11:06] issue or complaint that remains unresolved by the relevant tax [00:11:10] authority. the tax payer may launch the complaint with the [00:11:14] office the tax on board in accordance with the applicable [00:11:17] provisions the act. the office the tax on board provides a [00:11:21] formal avenue for taxpayers to seek redress in tax [00:11:25] disputes and unresolved matters arising from the actions [00:11:28] or decisions the tax authority. the tax payer should follow the [00:11:32] prescribed procedure and timelines for the appeal or [00:11:36] complain. over [00:11:45] now to our professional insights [00:11:46] segments. [00:12:03] so my name is Arastus Mutui, tax [00:12:06] ombudsman for Tanzania and so the [00:12:09] organization is called taxman service, it's under the ministry of [00:12:13] finance, so I'm heading the uh the institution, [00:12:16] so the tax ombudsman office [00:12:20] receives um and [00:12:23] resolves complaints. on tax matters [00:12:27] related to administrative, procedural and [00:12:30] service issues, so the [00:12:34] taxpayers would bring their complaints [00:12:37] and then have the internal process to process [00:12:41] them in a ne to [00:12:45] resolve them, [00:12:46] yeah, [00:12:52] first of all, i would say um the [00:12:55] our institution is fairly new, it's two and [00:12:59] a half years old um and but [00:13:03] has been an important pillar in our tax [00:13:07] administration system, the tax [00:13:10] ad we have vision [00:13:13] of growing [00:13:15] economy 10 times [00:13:19] to in the next 25 years to [00:13:23] 2050 and what will... have looked at is business [00:13:27] environment is going to be imperative uh part [00:13:31] of really great growth that we're looking out to [00:13:34] um and the tax part is very a big [00:13:38] part the you know business environment having a better business [00:13:42] environment so from our side really we play a critical [00:13:45] role in ensuring that you know we [00:13:49] smoothen the business environment from tax you know [00:13:53] tax tax complaints that management point of view or [00:13:57] addressing point of view and that is very very [00:14:00] critical and the way before i go to to the AI [00:14:04] and all that and the way we do it really we [00:14:08] receive case by case [00:14:10] you know we have case by cases that we receive and resolve but from [00:14:14] the cases we establish patterns and [00:14:17] then we do systemic reviews which are very [00:14:21] critical um and these ones we help you [00:14:25] the recommendations that come out of that would go to the revenue [00:14:28] authority to improve in the [00:14:31] in the areas that [00:14:32] you know tax payers are saying [00:14:33] no no in these areas that you have issues in these areas [00:14:37] that is one and where they are related to policy then we take them to [00:14:41] the ministry of finance we would take them to the ministry of finance for consideration so [00:14:45] that's a big area that we're looking forward [00:14:48] to really enhancing [00:14:51] especially in the [00:14:53] in the effort to improve the business environment, [00:14:57] so from a technological digitalization, [00:15:00] technological point of view and now coming to the [00:15:03] AI, it's an it's an very important element, [00:15:07] from our side, currently we have um [00:15:11] complaints management systems that people from all across the [00:15:15] country can feed their complaints and we would process [00:15:18] the complaints through the system um, and somebody [00:15:22] will be getting notifications the stages that... the complaints is and all [00:15:26] that, which is part of digitalization, but [00:15:30] then we have opportunity uh from the AI point of view, [00:15:34] AI is critical, it's it's coming an imperative. [00:15:38] part the part the society and in this [00:15:41] case taxation is not is not [00:15:45] can will not be out of that, our counterparts [00:15:48] from from the revenue authority they're working you [00:15:52] know into the systems how they can integrate AI in [00:15:56] really getting to uh serve the the customers [00:16:00] - the you know the tax spares better really reading the patterns [00:16:04] and all those things that can you come with AI from our [00:16:07] side as well we are exploring on how we [00:16:11] can you integrate AI into the [00:16:15] complaints management system especially [00:16:19] the customer care you know there are things [00:16:22] that can be brought about and having the [00:16:25] initial kind of analysis be done through [00:16:29] AI and then the human intervention will come [00:16:32] in there so yeah it's very critical element and you know as [00:16:36] business evolve taxation tax administration [00:16:40] evolved, it's a it's a central tool to play with or [00:16:43] to have in the [00:16:45] in the improvement of business environment and the taxation system in general, [00:16:49] yeah [00:16:55] like three four levels i would say of handling [00:16:59] tax complaints, so the one level would [00:17:02] be would be the revenue authority [00:17:05] itself, you know the... when they do something taxpayers [00:17:09] would you give feedback that these [00:17:12] areas need improvement [00:17:16] and and in that case you authority would [00:17:19] address them so that's a first level um [00:17:23] and then you have we have the tribunal an our case [00:17:27] there too which is called the the the tax revenue [00:17:31] appeals board and as a first level of entry for [00:17:35] appeals and these are purely appeals. uh tax apps [00:17:39] from the you know or from the objections that will be handled by [00:17:43] by the revenue authority, if tax pay is not happy with that, [00:17:46] will take it to the board for for [00:17:49] uh for you for [00:17:52] edudication um [00:17:55] and then what do we do, there are a lot [00:17:59] of uh [00:18:01] cases that are administrative [00:18:04] nature, procedural nature. service [00:18:07] signature and what we are saying is instead [00:18:11] these cases going to going [00:18:15] to the court take long time to be addressed [00:18:18] in car of course there there can be [00:18:22] mechanism to address them and that's why then [00:18:26] the bombersment system was created and also [00:18:30] that is one leg but also there there's another leg given the way [00:18:33] our tax system is structured there are various [00:18:39] um interventions that um [00:18:41] that tax payer may not access you know the the [00:18:45] the tax appeals the tax appeals board given [00:18:49] the nature the way the [00:18:51] the tax legislation is framed um so let's say like [00:18:55] enforcement issues if they want to close somebody's [00:18:58] you know business or they want [00:19:02] to you know hold on an account that person may [00:19:05] not [00:19:06] uh hold a bank account that person if feel that this [00:19:10] is unfair may not go to to the the way the law is [00:19:14] fred, they may not go to to the tax revenue appels [00:19:18] board, so they could come to us, but again they also [00:19:22] a nature of other other [00:19:25] situations where you would find [00:19:28] that we would be much more placed to address [00:19:32] complaints coming from from that type of situation and area than [00:19:36] the court system and give example, let's say for the [00:19:40] customs and we import and export, there is cross [00:19:43] border trade and we have the FCTA, it's a big [00:19:47] thing, so an importer or exporter for [00:19:51] that matter, [00:19:52] you know um, if they have issue at customs [00:19:56] level, they may not wait [00:20:00] to go to court because it will attract demorages, it will [00:20:03] attract storage charges, it will all those type of things, so they need [00:20:07] a quick quicker resolution of you any issue [00:20:11] that may have, so the ombudsman is well [00:20:14] placed and well placed given the tools that we [00:20:18] use to address the complaints to address such kind [00:20:22] of complaints, so it's it's really looking at the [00:20:25] 360 degree of [00:20:27] you know making sure that if there is anything that [00:20:31] arises from the from the from [00:20:35] the you know in the administration tax administration. system can be [00:20:39] accommodated and can be resolved fairly and and [00:20:42] well and in the quest really to improve the business [00:20:46] environment here. [00:20:53] we we are building bridges [00:20:54] you know between taxpayer and uh and [00:20:58] uh and the revenue authority uh quite we have addressed quite a [00:21:02] number of tax complaints uh that we have [00:21:05] addressed uh but the key thing as well is the systemic [00:21:09] that we are really you know systemic review that [00:21:13] we are really working on now so I would [00:21:16] say building trust with tax payer building [00:21:20] voluntary voluntary [00:21:23] compliance, which is very critical in [00:21:27] increasing, you know, increasing compliance, so we [00:21:31] are playing role in that in [00:21:33] that in those in [00:21:34] those areas, but as well, I would say [00:21:38] um, another area that we are really looking forward to is the cross [00:21:42] border business, um, our country, borders eight [00:21:46] countries, which is which is huge and advantage. [00:21:50] and uh the business across these countries and for [00:21:54] that matter today is going to become very critical, so we are pioneering [00:21:58] conversation really around that, [00:22:01] and we, we've brought our colleagues from other [00:22:04] countries, and in this case the tax ombuds from other countries, we [00:22:08] have formed forum where we can have this conversation, especially [00:22:12] for the cross border uh trade, and we are going to [00:22:15] engage in the near future really on how we can really [00:22:19] uh um better player or [00:22:23] enhance we enhance our role play in the cross border [00:22:27] business, ombudsman system, it's an [00:22:30] evolving uh, it's an evolving [00:22:33] practice, traditionally we have had you know [00:22:37] the tax administration and the [00:22:39] court, there is lot that needs to [00:22:43] be done in between, right? there's a lot that needs to be [00:22:47] done in between, and if you look at the Africa and [00:22:51] FC FTA [00:22:55] um and our quest to really grow the business [00:22:58] across Africa, countries are going to [00:23:01] need um, are going to need the the [00:23:05] flexibility that comes with ombudsman really to to improve the [00:23:09] business environment, we are we are lucky that in [00:23:12] Tanzania uh one the few countries that have this [00:23:15] system um and it's going to be [00:23:20] a competitive advantage really [00:23:23] um for investments, for business, [00:23:27] environment point of view, so I [00:23:30] would ag you and advise and [00:23:34] really push [00:23:37] for [00:23:39] uh other countries to consider [00:23:41] you know setting up offices like this, because [00:23:44] you know it helps big time, it helps a lot on really [00:23:48] improving the business environment when will improve the business environment, businesses can [00:23:52] grow, business can focus on growth and and and [00:23:56] and and also attract investments africa [00:23:58] we want to attract investors and you know we cannot [00:24:02] just talk, this will be [00:24:03] institutionalizing the framework [00:24:07] to address such things like this, mean such like [00:24:11] mean to framework like ombudsman would be really [00:24:14] critical in in ensuring that [00:24:18] that promise of business environment and investment environment, [00:24:22] investment climate is [00:24:23] enhanced. [00:24:31] over to swateku for what's on the [00:24:33] net. [00:24:39] good day and welcome to what's on the net, my name is Joyce [00:24:43] Wateku. at Brotto is asking, we applied for tax [00:24:46] registration online since last week Thursday, we are yet to... get any [00:24:50] response, other times within 24 hours, it is ready. [00:24:54] what's happening now? at brotto, while some tax [00:24:57] registration applications may be processed within 24 hours, [00:25:01] processing time can vary depending on the verification required. if the [00:25:05] application submitted last thursday is still pending, we advise [00:25:09] the tax payer to check the status on the NRS self service portal. [00:25:13] if there is no update, they can raise a support ticket with the [00:25:16] NRS, quoting their registration details. so the [00:25:20] application can be reviewed and the necessary action [00:25:23] taken. as obafemi is asking, very [00:25:27] informative, does the tax payer automatically receive credit for the withholding [00:25:31] tax deducted, or is [00:25:32] there a process for claiming the tax credit? the withholding [00:25:36] tax deducted is not simply lost. it can be recognized as a tax [00:25:40] credit once the deduction has been properly reported and [00:25:43] validated. taxpayers should ensure that the withholding tax [00:25:47] certificates and related records are available, and properly reflected [00:25:51] in their tax account. where the credit is not showing, the tax [00:25:55] payer should contact the NRS through the appropriate support [00:25:58] channel for reconciliation and [00:26:33] inspiring trust, sustaining [00:26:35] growth.
