[00:00:00] then apart from that, the fact that we work quite a lot with lot of school [00:00:03] leaders, we work with sub chairman, we work with [00:00:07] commissioners and also the fact that we work with eds of [00:00:10] agencies, it makes it really easy for us to be able to [00:00:15] of of access, so there's no problem at all with that, and where people want to, [00:00:18] mean like the lesson plants that we spoke about, what we intend doing [00:00:22] is for everybody to [00:00:24] be able to have access in all our offices for prescripted lesson plan, but [00:00:28] don't forget that where you have the gift. and talented teachers, [00:00:31] because you you have some some teachers that are well established, those ones [00:00:35] conveniently can use our platform to do AI generated lesson [00:00:39] platform, mean to do AI um lesson plans, and with that [00:00:43] as well we can differentiate lessons, because those are the kind of things we're [00:00:46] propagating, because unfortunately we have [00:00:49] of dealt with our gifted and talented children in Nigeria as normal [00:00:53] children, I mean some schools are training them really well, [00:00:56] but those are the areas that we still have lot of concerns with. [00:01:00] where children are been very boistous because they've not been [00:01:03] challenged enough and where um the lessable children are being [00:01:07] neglected, the fact that you autistic as a child does not [00:01:11] mean does not write you off, that child may be the best child, [00:01:15] maybe the genius, but because nobody has actually taken time to understand [00:01:19] how to access the [00:01:20] of child, and those are the kind of things that we're doing at the moment to say, you can go a [00:01:23] website and we can do lot [00:01:25] of with MCPD, another thing is on that we have [00:01:29] of accredited trainers. that we have to accredit because we [00:01:32] don't just allow um schools to just use just any trainer [00:01:36] because we are moving away from where people will just [00:01:39] of go and download resources from the website and go and be training our [00:01:42] schools for god sake you are misleading our school so what we're [00:01:46] saying is bring your [00:01:48] of resources call us invite us will come and inspect wel [00:01:52] come and be part of you accredits you see how the [00:01:56] curriculum is actually going to be um have you actually addressed? [00:02:00] needs that we have today and any RDC [00:02:03] has uh newly, I mean they've just reviewed their own curriculum as well because we're [00:02:07] trying to adapt it to suit our children now because we can't afford to be [00:02:11] teaching children for nine to five learning, we're looking for lifelong [00:02:14] learners, so all those key things they matter and those are the kind of things [00:02:18] that is making us to say we want accredited trainers to actually come and [00:02:22] get accredited by TROCM, [00:02:24] I i also want to find out because [00:02:28] um for me "a lot of what you're talking about is technical [00:02:32] and more computer and all [00:02:35] of that, you go to the local areas, [00:02:39] the teachers are sometimes close to the students they [00:02:43] teach in terms of educational learning, [00:02:46] computers, all [00:02:48] of this, i can tell you that there are schools that even this issue of lesson [00:02:52] plan may not be as strict as it should be, which brings [00:02:56] us to the issue [00:02:56] of the standards in those schools, how do you manage?" [00:03:00] the different cader of uh teachers you [00:03:03] already have on ground, some who themselves are struggling [00:03:07] to read and right before you start [00:03:10] a taking them into the issue of computer, [00:03:13] your your website and that goes into what [00:03:17] we spoke about at initial stay, that's where we introduce foundational learning, yes, [00:03:21] because we have quite, [00:03:23] mean i remember when i was a dg in lagus, we had a particular [00:03:26] school e where a teacher was teaching a primary four class, she couldn't [00:03:30] communicate in English, so I had to [00:03:32] a speak Euroba before we could communicate, and to me that was seriously [00:03:36] appalling, so what we're saying now is for you to teach in our [00:03:39] schools, you must be um, you must have, you must sit for [00:03:43] examination, and for you to sit for exam, because there's no way you can come [00:03:47] of and cheat, um, everything has been randomized, um, if I sit [00:03:51] beside you in TROCN exam, the two of us will be doing [00:03:54] different exams, so if you copy me you're just copying nonsense, so with all [00:03:58] that is making a lot of people. now to tffen up themselves, [00:04:01] however we're in Nigeria, you still have, because when I [00:04:05] told you that oh um in some states we've been supporting them to [00:04:09] recruit, there were some states that we got to where about 250 of [00:04:13] applicants had fake TRC and [00:04:16] certificate [00:04:18] and so that made us to uh [00:04:22] open our eyes that what's happening because even when I took over um when [00:04:26] I took over as the um register there was a particular face [00:04:30] platform that had about 74 thousand of our teachers, it was fake [00:04:33] platform, wow, and so what we did was to register [00:04:37] officially, um, contact facebook, we've taken all those sites [00:04:40] down, however, for people who are actually uh [00:04:44] impersonating on us at the moment, we're working with them because one is going to be [00:04:48] paraded very soon, you know, he has everything about [00:04:52] of TRCN, when I travel, when I go somewhere, he puts it on his own platform as [00:04:56] well, so he has clone our [00:04:59] of platform, so what? saying is we need every teacher to actually be checked [00:05:02] in terms of standards, trocn conveniently cannot do it by [00:05:06] by itself, so that's why we need [00:05:09] of every every school leader, the subeb chairman. "the [00:05:13] commissioners, everybody needs to understand that no matter what you're doing in [00:05:17] education, how effective is it to learning [00:05:20] outcomes, because I sit at meetings and sometimes what [00:05:23] people are discussing may not be relevant to the outcome the learning the [00:05:27] children, so because I mean I know my background is UK [00:05:31] and in UK you don't sit any meeting as any head of [00:05:34] agency if your work is not actually making impact to the [00:05:38] child's learning, so that's something that we are propagating now and thank god we have..." [00:05:42] Dr. Tunjo sir and also uh professor Suwebad [00:05:45] because all of us and the fact that you have lot of educationists are [00:05:49] the em of affairs is making everybody to realize that it cannot be business as [00:05:53] usual how impactful is he and that's why we're celebrating excellence at [00:05:57] all times we're celebrating excellence where we see [00:06:00] underperforming um things we share it with everybody to [00:06:04] make sure that training can address that and also the fact that we're [00:06:08] going to be giving out the lesson plan as well that's going to move education [00:06:11] forward. drastically because we had the same problem in England as [00:06:15] well as at 2000 sorry as at 1999 the same [00:06:19] problem was there where learning was really uh learning [00:06:23] was not good in quite a lot of areas and there was schools going under [00:06:27] notice to improve what we did was to give them resources [00:06:31] because yes and that really helped and that moved education [00:06:34] drastically forward because it wasn't just helping teachers it was also [00:06:38] helping the children and teachers were actually learning lot from that. [00:06:42] so that's something that we're doing at the moment, the only thing is we don't want to go and [00:06:46] copy what is being done abroad, but let's contextualize our [00:06:49] result, mean our lesson plans to the needs of [00:06:53] Nigeria, now i want to be clear from what you're saying now, [00:06:57] my my understanding is that we have a larger, [00:07:01] almost larger population of private schools than [00:07:05] private public schools, are you able to take this [00:07:08] work even to the private schools and thank you very much sir. [00:07:12] Definitely we are, because if I tell you the largest private school [00:07:16] association that we have is AFED, that's association of [00:07:19] formidable educational development, and that's for the low income teachers [00:07:23] and we run quite a lot, we actually work together, [00:07:27] they're part of my council, so sometimes when they're [00:07:31] doing conferences, we and they invite TROCN staff to actually come [00:07:35] and train to tell them about expectations, and another one for the [00:07:39] middle schools will be naps, that's Nigerian. uh [00:07:43] association of proprieters or whatever, they work also [00:07:47] with us, we have one their members and the top schools epen [00:07:51] that's um the top 80 schools in lagos and you have [00:07:55] them maybe in every state you have like three f you know [00:07:58] and um we work with [00:07:59] them because at the end the day we want everybody to speak from the same [00:08:03] him sheet standard has got to get better good now back to the [00:08:07] issue of your when you started you said you want to professionalize the teaching [00:08:11] profession lot of teachers will complain that they are overworked, [00:08:15] underpaid, and here you are now coming, you are adding the [00:08:19] issue of standard, they now have to go and do exam and all that, you go to [00:08:22] class a teacher that should be teaching 20, what's the [00:08:25] number, they should be teaching 25 to 25 [00:08:29] st are teaching triple that number, [00:08:33] and we we've now drawn up a code of conduct that will hold him [00:08:36] to, what are you doing to ensure that while the [00:08:40] profession is being made? a profession, the standards [00:08:44] and the expectations are also being brought okay, thank you very much sir, I [00:08:48] must say in terms of infrastructure, um, this [00:08:52] government has done so well in terms of how do we get more [00:08:55] classrooms for schools, how do we get more teachers [00:08:59] and um, we have some examplary states, if you [00:09:02] go to abier, I mean, I was dased with what they were doing in [00:09:06] education when I got there, and states also, and the fact that [00:09:10] I'm coming from the um, self as well, i know quite a lot of [00:09:14] states that have been able to increase the number of um classrooms [00:09:17] and also they're reducing drastically the number [00:09:21] of children each each school, [00:09:25] so um the only thing is we still have pockets of [00:09:28] states that are still very very large for [00:09:31] classroom um setup, but we will not relent our [00:09:34] effort in propagating what is expected because that's [00:09:38] something that is really happening and the fact that we work with nigerian governors for. [00:09:43] is making everybody to be more assertive of what the [00:09:46] expectation should be in our schools, we're not fully there yet, but by the [00:09:50] time we come for the second time, I'm sure be able to do more work. Okay, yes, [00:09:54] now I want to lean on your [00:09:57] experience, I like the way you've stated [00:10:00] it, you've worked in the UK, also led some quality [00:10:04] control in Lagos, now you are here, if you were to look at the whole [00:10:08] our whole educational sector, because [00:10:11] it's you... touched on issue, the issue of AI, the [00:10:15] issue of digital learning and the way [00:10:19] it's changing, yeah, for the Nigeria we [00:10:22] need the human. resource we're [00:10:26] trying to create that will help uh build this Nigeria we [00:10:30] need, if you were to look at our educational sector, where do you think we have the most [00:10:34] challenge right now? I think quality assurance should be given enough [00:10:38] attention, we need to have good practitioners, [00:10:41] exemplary officers, because who is going to lead your quality [00:10:45] assurance, it matters, because what transformed education in [00:10:48] England is all about quality assurance offstead, offstead is coming to your [00:10:52] school, you don't mess up, they know what they're looking for. they're not looking for [00:10:55] money, they're looking for how they can actually partner with you and [00:10:59] move education better. another thing will be number three will be for [00:11:03] me will be leadership and management, because if we [00:11:07] improve teachers across board in Nigeria, if we don't improve - [00:11:11] school leaders then we have missed it. um, school [00:11:14] leaders must be trained, um, they [00:11:18] must be specially trained to lead our schools. are you [00:11:22] talking of proprietors of principals or? principals and [00:11:26] talking of school head teachers, i'm talking of even [00:11:29] propritors, so this is the administrative arm, the [00:11:32] administrative arm of schools, they need to understand what leadership and management [00:11:36] is all about, how do you empower people, how do you [00:11:40] manage results, how do you manage people, [00:11:43] you know there are quite a lot of things, do you have vision for that [00:11:46] school, because when you have vision then you can actually [00:11:50] cascade that down to your teachers, because sometimes you have people are [00:11:54] leading schools. that cannot be bothered, and if I'm a teacher, [00:11:58] I'm working so hard under you, but you're not noticing, after a [00:12:01] while, I i can go quiet and say, let me join the [00:12:05] others to just be bad, you know, so there's a need for us to celebrate [00:12:09] good practice, there's a need for us to look into leadership and management, because [00:12:13] most the countries that are doing so well in education, they went to look [00:12:17] into their leadership area, so leadership is is very [00:12:21] important, how do you support teachers with the right trainings and [00:12:25] empowering them and also sharing the good practice, celebrating success at [00:12:29] all times, because every teacher wants to be celebrated, they don't want [00:12:32] to be relegated, [00:12:34] you know, so it must be a professional pride, we [00:12:37] give back to you as journalist sir, we give back to all the medical doctors, we get back [00:12:41] to engineers, why are they better respected than teachers, so we need [00:12:45] to respect teachers in our society, and that's something we're propagating at the [00:12:49] moment, okay, so from where you sit as the registr right now, [00:12:53] you you came in 500 500 years ago [00:12:56] and um you know what you met, you've [00:13:00] now had time to see the landscape, [00:13:04] what are you hoping you, what timeline can you give us [00:13:08] that you're hoping you be able to nigerians will be able to feel a difference in our [00:13:12] education? thank you very much, um with my colleagues we have [00:13:16] about um we do target seting every three [00:13:19] months, you can see my boat there, there's a boat so there's always [00:13:23] a target and [00:13:25] I have very formidable team and with that target we know how to [00:13:29] work towards it, everybody has including that [00:13:32] particular gateman must know what to do to actually [00:13:36] support education, because everybody has got to so we need to [00:13:40] um so to me I want to say that in the next three four [00:13:43] years um I mean problem in education [00:13:47] will be a thing of a pass provided we continue with strong [00:13:51] leadership team that's very important because - don't have strong [00:13:55] leadership team that has clear vision of this is where we're going, this is [00:13:59] how we're going to achieve it, then we can miss it again, because [00:14:02] sometimes you can be so, you can say, oh, i'm good, i want, [00:14:06] you need an enabling environment, and that's what i want to give to mr. [00:14:10] president, mr. president, president, has given [00:14:13] everybody great enabling environment to be able to [00:14:16] flourish, he wants you to actually bringing new ideas, [00:14:20] he permits you to bring in new initiatives and that's what is helping at the [00:14:24] moment. and not only that, the fact that - president will [00:14:28] tell you that what exactly is the what's the data looking like, and that's [00:14:32] why you will see dr.jal always working towards data that let's look at [00:14:36] the data, how are they performing, where we have lot of out of school children, [00:14:40] what's gosing that, because conveniently when you look at how many [00:14:43] children, how many of our private schools that we have, we have [00:14:46] more um naury primary schools, but we don't [00:14:50] have lot of um secondary schools and how many people can afford [00:14:54] their children to... to secondary school, so the gap between nury [00:14:58] primary and secondary is so much, and what do we do? do [00:15:02] we need to create more schools? so there's a need for holistic [00:15:05] approach, there's a need for good leaders to come around the table and say, [00:15:09] okay, we've done all this in the last few days, but what is the next [00:15:13] way forward? and these good leaders should transcend federal, they should also [00:15:17] be from other lay, from other layers as well, because you cannot just talk to [00:15:21] federal, mean within my own and team the council. [00:15:25] I have lot of people from the state that actually attend every three months, we look at [00:15:29] our result, we look at data, what's the data telling us and [00:15:33] because I have some the heads of agencies also within my council they can. [00:15:37] say oh, i need to go and review my curriculum, i need to go and do this [00:15:41] area, so there's there must be lot of discussions. above [00:15:44] all, i want to say that for teachers, for them to transform [00:15:48] education, what TRCN is propagating is we must not forget the [00:15:52] forces, the forces will be, we want children to be allowed to [00:15:55] communicate, there has [00:15:57] to be lot of speaking and listening in their schools, there has to be lot of [00:16:00] creativity, teachers are got to be creative, but 21st century child [00:16:04] obviously will get board if you are using [00:16:10] schools at [00:16:11] the [00:16:17] in our moment, the last but not the least must be communication, so [00:16:20] communication, creativity, critical thinking must be in the [00:16:24] school, doctor, I like to thank you very much, it's been a very [00:16:28] interesting time, I think we've tried to touch some things, we might not have [00:16:32] touched all, but I'm grateful for the time you spent, thank you so much, thank [00:16:36] you so much sir. [00:16:41] One thing that remains very important is this: government [00:16:45] policies are designed for citizens and it is citizens [00:16:49] who must speak up whether those policies are working or [00:16:53] not. That is how we ensure government truly [00:16:56] works for the good of society. We love to hear your reactions [00:17:00] to tonight's discussion. Are you teacher, a [00:17:03] parent?
