[00:02:30] an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and [00:02:33] passionate argument about freedom of speech and [00:02:36] a the most complex political issue on the [00:02:38] planet. yes, and we it's [00:02:42] almost that [00:02:42] of time [00:02:42] of of year again, isn't it? the british roll legion appeals to volunteers to help [00:02:46] run it's [00:02:47] of annual [00:02:47] of poppy [00:02:48] of appeal. vitally important for us to support those, [00:02:52] those that are serving and those that have [00:02:54] a served. of course those guys and [00:02:56] of ladies have gone out and they have given their all for us. [00:03:00] and so it is great for [00:03:01] of us to be able to just give that [00:03:03] of bit little bit back to them to say thank [00:03:05] you. well i'm done and this is [00:03:09] indeed the [00:03:13] of [00:03:15] a of weekend. Earl [00:04:42] of Spencer in says there are similarities between how both his sister, princess [00:04:46] Diana, and the Duke and Dutches of [00:04:48] of Sussex have been [00:04:49] in treated of by the media. Harry and Megan, who recently returned to the [00:04:52] UK from California, six years after stepping back from royal [00:04:56] duties [00:04:57] of have been repeatedly critical [00:04:59] of the press. Speaking to the BBC, Spencer said daily [00:05:03] criticism from the media must be cancerous influence in [00:05:06] their life. It would be really beholding on people to [00:05:10] of learn from Diana's [00:05:11] a example, of I'm of not of here. to speak for Harry and Megan, but for anyone who's [00:05:15] being destroyed in this way daily, it must [00:05:18] be such cancerous influence in their life. One the problems [00:05:22] with Diana was, she's very, very sensitive to [00:05:25] criticism, and of course, I'm sure most of your viewers [00:05:29] now think, oh, she had this splendid life and it was all amazing, and she didn't, she was so [00:05:33] privileged and so perfect in so many ways, but she was really [00:05:36] brought low by all that criticism, and yeah, I suppose it's a [00:05:40] pity when I see echo. of that [00:05:42] now. Ed Sheeren has apologized to fans [00:05:46] for making mistakes as he opened a solo show in [00:05:50] Philadelphia. All the singers support acts, including his [00:05:54] band, have quit the current loop tour, after the US rapper McLamore [00:05:57] was dropped for making pro-Palestinian comments during a show. [00:06:01] Sheeran said that decision was taken by promoters, not [00:06:05] him, but he was sorry for his handling the controversy that [00:06:08] followed. I don't want to disappoint fans. and I've [00:06:12] never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an [00:06:16] important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most [00:06:20] complex political issue on the [00:06:22] planet. He went to describe the October [00:06:26] 7th Hamasled attacks as horrific, but said Israel's [00:06:29] treatment of residence in Gaza is [00:06:31] unjustifiable. At least two people [00:06:35] have been killed and six others injured in one the biggest Ukrainian drone [00:06:39] attacks on the Moscow region overnight. Official. in Russia say [00:06:43] more than 200 drones had been shot down and fires were [00:06:46] reported in several residential houses and an oil refinery. [00:06:50] Meanwhile, in Ukraine, mother and her two three-year-old children have been killed [00:06:54] in Kiev. The governor there says the area has endured constant [00:06:58] hostile attacks for more than a day with 31 sights [00:07:02] damaged in five districts. Sir [00:07:06] Ed Dave says he's confident the Liberal Democrats can take on [00:07:10] Night of Farage and Zack Polansky at the next. election, [00:07:13] insisting he has the charisma to compete with both. speaking at [00:07:17] the party conference in Brighton, he said if the lib dems were to form the next [00:07:20] government, they would cut fuel duty and rail and bus fairs [00:07:24] a cost of around two billion pounds a year. got to help people with the [00:07:28] costling, particularly the rise in filling your car up at the pumps of [00:07:32] petrol and diesel. thanks to Trump's idiotic war with Iran, [00:07:36] people are paying a fortune just to fill up the car, so we think we should [00:07:40] have cut in fuel duty tax. 'for the next three months to [00:07:43] cut the price you pay at the pumps by 12p liter [00:07:47] that would really bring help just when it's needed and it will pay for itself because the [00:07:51] government's getting huge amounts of tax revenue from these higher oil and gas prices [00:07:55] they should give it back to people and the [00:07:58] conservatives are calling on labor to cut welfare spending in next month's [00:08:02] budget warning the government must confront what they've described as the [00:08:06] grim reality of Britain's economic peril, the round comes as [00:08:10] inflation reaches five month high of'. 3.1% with Chancellor [00:08:14] John Healey due to deliver the budget [00:08:16] at the end of October, but Brigitte Philipson insists benefits support [00:08:20] young people into work and lifts children out of [00:08:23] poverty. Some the hardest working people I know are [00:08:27] people that are in law paid jobs, they work incredibly hard, they do the right thing, they [00:08:31] don't earn huge amounts of money, and they deserve support to, and to that point about [00:08:35] child poverty, one the biggest indicators is to whether you will [00:08:39] go to live a good life where you can contribute as whether you grow up in poverty. Therefore tackling [00:08:43] child poverty, lifting children out of poverty is absolutely the right [00:08:47] thing to do. You're up to date for now, more in half an [00:08:50] hour. Tune in GB News radio wherever you are, [00:08:54] online, on DAB Digital Radio, on tune-in, on Radio [00:08:58] Player, nation player and on your smart speaker. [00:09:02] Just say PlayGV [00:09:03] News. [00:09:11] Thank you very much. and thank you so much for your company today, already [00:09:15] so many people getting in touch, Sally, Lizzie, Marilyn, Nil, Philip, Jan, [00:09:19] and a special hello to Jax, Jack says, um, uh, [00:09:23] hi, [00:09:24] Dawn, from the Londoner in New Zealand, just gone midnight here, but I'm staying up [00:09:27] to watch, well, very good morning, good evening, [00:09:31] thank you for joining me, Jax, lovely to hear from you, and yeah, let me know, if you're listening [00:09:35] around the world, let me know, I love doing a little geographical map of where all GB News, [00:09:39] viewers, listeners and are, so thank you so much for your company. 'we've got a great show [00:09:43] so you don't want to move and it's a Sunday so just put your feet up basically let's get cracking [00:09:47] show we the chair the labour party has hit back at Manchester [00:09:51] United co-owner sir Jim Ratcliff for claiming the UK is [00:09:55] on the slide because of high taxes and migration. [00:09:59] Brigit Philipson told GB News she rejects his [00:10:01] criticism. I'm not sure I want to be hearing too much from someone who's [00:10:05] attax exileus to what they think is to the direction of our company working people, people [00:10:09] who work hard expect to see rewards for that contribution. It's why'. [00:10:13] "they will have seen in in recent months with the new prime minister Andy Burnam a real [00:10:17] focus on giving people more breathing space around VAT on electricity [00:10:20] bills around bus fairs around business rates cuts for hospitality which is [00:10:24] incredible" the important part of our economy, I think that shows the [00:10:27] direction that this government wishes to go in, to recognize the contribution that people [00:10:31] make and to make sure that they are awarded for doing so, not really [00:10:35] working though, is it? I mean, 71% of big businesses, and that's people that employ more than [00:10:39] 10 people, are deeply unhappy with the way things are going, especially with the [00:10:43] energy situation in this country, which is one the other things that sir [00:10:47] Jim Ratcliff picks up on. Now, it does come also [00:10:51] top of Manchester United Muslim supporters club. [00:10:55] who are calling for sir Jim to go following his claim that Britain has [00:10:58] been colonized by immigrants, now these were comments um Sir Jim said [00:11:03] few months ago now, but he has doubled down on them [00:11:07] um once again by saying that migration [00:11:10] is a problem in this country, which I think many of you watching and listening [00:11:14] today wouldn't have an argument with, but Manchester United Muslim supporters [00:11:18] club say that Jim Ratcliff must go after he spoke out once [00:11:22] again about the immigration situation. Uh, joining me now is [00:11:26] political commentator Jesse to dive down [00:11:29] into this [00:11:30] uh, Jess, good to see you, thank you so much for joining me. Um, obviously, you know, so [00:11:34] Jim Ratcliff is to no controversy [00:11:37] stranger here, he's said similar comments before, but this is very wide ranging [00:11:41] interview he has given saying that the UK is on the [00:11:45] slide, and he left the UK back in 2020 saying it was on the slide [00:11:49] then, it's slid even further according to him, and he's not going to come back [00:11:53] until things start improving. is he right? Jess, is he right to say these [00:11:57] things? well, I, I think totally, Dawn, I think [00:12:00] he's identifying a frustration that lots of [00:12:04] working people recognize, you know, can working [00:12:08] hard actually get you much places these days, can [00:12:12] working hard get you house, can working hard get you financial [00:12:15] stability, can working hard give you that security that you need [00:12:19] to start a family, well more and more of people [00:12:22] are uh, there's decining birth rates more and... people are just choosing not to [00:12:26] start families because it's just so expensive nowadays. look, [00:12:30] these shouldn't be extravagant ambitions, but they are, [00:12:34] and I am less interested in comparing Britain with its [00:12:38] past and comparing what future it could offer young [00:12:41] people, and if we want this country to [00:12:44] succeed, I think we should be listening to the comments of Sir Jim [00:12:48] Rackliff, who is influential [00:12:52] businessman and has done wonderful things. 'um [00:12:55] you know he's raised so much money, he you know [00:12:59] these people that they have freedom of speech and they should be allowed to [00:13:02] you know say he should go, but just because you own a football [00:13:06] club does not mean you don't need to say whatever you want to say, he should be able to say [00:13:10] whatever he want, mean he's he's said to be worth 17 [00:13:14] billion and he has as i say criticized the government quite [00:13:17] extensively um [00:13:19] and you know he started his petrochemical firm ios literally from [00:13:23] scratch so he knows about run business, employing [00:13:26] people, driving growth for the economy, which is [00:13:29] surely what the country needs, just, I mean, more than [00:13:33] 16,000 millionaires left the UK last year, the highest [00:13:37] exes ever reported according to report [00:13:41] here, now those on the left and those for the labor party, [00:13:45] well good ridence, [00:13:46] but the thing is just it's not good ridence bause it's these high earners, it's these [00:13:50] millionaires that pay the most tax, [00:13:54] well quite... Right, and I think when someone who's built a [00:13:57] major industrial business is saying that Britain has [00:14:01] become less attractive to invest in, less [00:14:05] attractive for those highest tax payers to reside in, [00:14:08] we should be listening. You don't have to agree with every word that [00:14:12] he's saying, but demanding he goes, doesn't answer his [00:14:16] concerns about immigration, which I'm sure many viewers would agree [00:14:20] with, myself, included, his concerned about energy [00:14:23] costs, and should be challenging his arguments, not saying oh, [00:14:27] you [00:14:27] need to go from your position at Manchester United football club, it's ridiculous. yeah, well, [00:14:31] this is the Manchester United Muslim supporters group, and and they [00:14:34] say that um, his comments once again [00:14:38] has placed immigration and people receiving benefits at the [00:14:42] center of his explanation for Britain's problems, [00:14:46] arguing that, nobody in this country is tough enough to deal [00:14:49] with either. they say they find the latest comments deeply disappointing and [00:14:53] completely un' acceptable, they say Man United in particular has [00:14:57] been built on diversity with [00:15:01] players, supporters and stuff coming from different countries, cultures and [00:15:04] ethnic, now they they they've written quite a strong letter just saying that [00:15:08] he needs to go cuz is once again demonizing those on [00:15:12] benefits and migrants, but as you say jeess an awful [00:15:16] lot of people in this country would agree with those sentiments, [00:15:20] well dawn, he literally started from nothing, [00:15:24] his Industrial business is [00:15:27] fantastic attribute to what this [00:15:30] country used to be, it used to be a country that businesses could [00:15:33] build, and [00:15:35] I support lower immigration and [00:15:36] I support country that rewards enterprise and owning football [00:15:40] club, that doesn't mean you should stop expressing those views, it's [00:15:43] obseine. fans, sure, criticize him, freedom of speech, [00:15:47] I'm all for it, but saying oh, he's got to go, [00:15:50] you know, his departure needs to happen, no, that's [00:15:52] disproportionate, you should not need to have everyone's approval [00:15:56] to have an opinion, again, yes, I mean, just quickly and finally, we [00:16:00] keep, [00:16:01] we we're talking about it and all week and the the free speech issue around [00:16:05] that, this is another element of free speech. "he has an [00:16:08] opinion, I don't think he said anything particularly racist or offensive [00:16:12] personally, but yet once again he should be canceled for [00:16:16] daring to have an opinion, well the tolerant left [00:16:19] right, indeed, I think that somes are rather [00:16:23] well, and that's political commentator Jesser, thank you so much for joining us, [00:16:27] Jess, okay, well talking of politics and you know [00:16:31] Britain sliding into decline, um, is it and [00:16:35] would a general election solve? the problem: well, the prime [00:16:39] minister is, according to today's reports, plotting early [00:16:42] election, labor sources claim Andy Burnham wants to call a [00:16:46] snap election within the next year to seek a fresh mandate [00:16:50] to, you know this is coming, raise taxes. uh, chancellor [00:16:54] John Healey is reportedly considering series of tax rises ahead of next month's [00:16:58] budget as a treasury looks to raise an extra 10 to 15 billion pounds [00:17:02] for that black hole that somehow mysteriously has been [00:17:04] created. um, so let's... and now to political [00:17:08] commentator Benedict Spence about this situation. Uh, Benedict, good to see [00:17:12] you. Thank you so much for joining me. Now, the bottom line is, I think everyone admits [00:17:16] it that we're skin. We have black holes all over the place. [00:17:19] Uh, money needs to come from somewhere, we can't borrow anymore up to our [00:17:23] balls in debt. The simplest way to raise income to raise [00:17:27] money is with income tax, but Andy Burnham can't [00:17:31] do that, because the labor manifesto said they wouldn't touch [00:17:34] that. So, is he going to have to call an election? [00:17:38] Well, I mean, the simplest way is not necessarily to raise income tax [00:17:42] given the current state of productivity in this country might in fact lead to a [00:17:46] shortfall in productivity. I mean, we've already got this sort of weird situation where people [00:17:50] who head towards 100 thousand pounds income once they head over that cliff [00:17:54] end up losing their marginal tax rates, at which point it becomes um [00:17:57] inadvantageous actually to work any harder until they reach a certain higher threshhold [00:18:01] even beyond that, so um, it's one of those things where you [00:18:05] know, as you say, the major issue is... of course the previous [00:18:08] manifesto pledge and Bernam has sort of been dithering around this saying, well, [00:18:12] is [00:18:12] it uh, is this change, is this continuity? I think he was hoping that saying [00:18:16] continuity would mean that he wouldn't have to go to the country early, but [00:18:20] actually, you know, as you say, we all know the pretty [00:18:24] powerless state the finances in this country, we all [00:18:28] know really that Burnham and John Healey don't have much of clue [00:18:32] of how to solve it, and we also all know that in very [00:18:36] short space of time the... popularity is going to start going the same way as [00:18:40] Kier Starmer's because we will become very aware that there is no [00:18:43] plan and that things are getting worse and ultimately because also things keep on happening [00:18:47] around the world that impact Britain disproportionately, wars, [00:18:51] global affairs, that sort of thing do tend to have an impact on the public finances, that's why [00:18:55] all the headroom was wiped out and they don't have anything to play with anymore, [00:18:58] so does he need this mandate in order to turn around and say I'm going to [00:19:02] raise income taxes? well, you'd have thought so, but it's [00:19:06] not going to be a... thing to run on, and this is the tricky thing [00:19:09] that I think Bernham had, when he came in, he did have that bounce, wasn't much of bounce, [00:19:13] but it was there, and [00:19:15] there was a very short window, I think in which he could have called a general [00:19:18] election, in order to go on the grounds of saying I'm [00:19:21] a new prime minister and I don't want it to be, that I only have [00:19:25] the backing the labour party, I want to put it to you, the people, in [00:19:29] that set of circumstances, I think he would have had half a chance with calling early [00:19:32] general election, now if he's having to do it to give himself a mandate to [00:19:36] say, oh please, please let me put your taxes up, I'll be ever so good about [00:19:40] it. I don't think that the people of this country, given that they are already suffering from [00:19:44] the highest tax burden in the post war period are going to take too [00:19:48] kindly to that as an idea, so if he wants to call the earlier general election on that [00:19:52] basis, I can see why he would feel that he might have to, but it's not going to go well [00:19:56] for him. No, it's it's hardly a good selling point isn't it, vote for me, I'll raise your [00:19:59] taxes. Um, the other option which Chance John Healey is supposed [00:20:03] to be considering are those soak the rich taxes. [00:20:08] 'um you know sort of like capital gains tax, corporation tax, woonful taxes [00:20:11] etc etc. and sort of like punishing rich people for leaving the [00:20:15] country and exit tax etc. now all of that has been suggested, [00:20:19] but it goes back to what we were talking about sir Jim Ratcliff, [00:20:22] benedict, I mean his saying we're on decline, and it is true [00:20:26] that the very rich and the investors and the people that do [00:20:30] grow economies are leaving our country, so income tax [00:20:34] really is the only way that they've got left to go." "I [00:20:38] mean, on the subject of Jim RatCliff, I don't think it's kind of ironic that he's somebody who sort of [00:20:42] stood sat around saying, well, we're spending far too much money, there's far too many foreign people [00:20:46] coming into the country and nothing seems to work, given that that is in fact the business model of..." [00:20:50] manchester United, I would have thought that he would have seen slightly the irony there, the [00:20:54] whole thing about not investing in the future, letting the roof collapse, buying a lot [00:20:58] of foreigners because they'll do the job for lot of money, let them take the money, they're not actually very [00:21:01] good, oh and everything just slowly slowly gets worse, but [00:21:04] you know the thing is with raising these, [00:21:08] these so called sort of wealth taxes, things like the mansion tax which has been [00:21:11] proposed, they appeal to people who are already going to [00:21:15] vote labor, they appeal to a certain set of people who do feel that there is [00:21:19] more money. be squeezed out of this country somehow, it's not going [00:21:23] to appeal to lot of those swing voters, lot of people who actually put labor in power, many of whom [00:21:27] previously would have voted conservative, but might be inclined also to vote lib [00:21:31] dem. it's not going to appeal particularly to those people who already feel that kind of burden, [00:21:34] and as you say Dawn, and awful lot of people who they'd like to target with those kind of taxes, [00:21:38] well they've already left the country, but I mean also the mansion tax in [00:21:42] particular is one thing that has been talked up a bit quite quite a [00:21:46] little in the last couple of of days talking about what... [00:21:50] threshhold, it's going to be at what point you'd implement it, would it be [00:21:53] 1.5 million in value of your property, would it be more? that's [00:21:57] a really tricky thing actually to enact when it's based on [00:22:01] something that you can't know for certain, the housing market [00:22:05] determines the value of a property. how can it be that a government can sit there and [00:22:09] tell somebody, oh your house is worth x if you can't sell it for that [00:22:12] price on [00:22:13] the open market, and i think [00:22:14] that that's going to be as as much as you, do think it would go down very well with [00:22:18] people who don't think [00:22:19] these things. in practice, these policies just fall flat in their face, [00:22:23] at which point then again, the holes appear in the budget, they're scrambling around [00:22:27] looking for more money cuz these policies haven't raised enough money, they've collapsed what's left the [00:22:31] housing market as part of that process and then the popularity starts to [00:22:35] go down even more, and and we do know that Andy Burnham likes being popular, that [00:22:39] hence all the TikTok videos, uh, Benedict, uh, voice of common sense, as always, that's [00:22:43] political commentator expense for you, [00:22:45] thank you, do let me know about what you feel about early general election, jube [00:22:49] news. [00:22:50] on forward/yorsay. mean, the latest polls do show that that burn and balance is [00:22:54] continuing slightly, so would he be in with a shout? but as benedict just says, [00:22:58] it's like, vote for me, i'm going to tax you more. not really good selling point is it? [00:23:02] okay, i'm done. this is juba news as lots more coming up today's show. yeah, [00:23:06] talking of politics. the lib dem conference is underway in [00:23:09] brighting. our chief political correspondent Catherine Foster has all the [00:23:13] latest for us on that one. all of that and much more to come, this is stube news, [00:23:17] britain's news channel. i'll see you very soon. [00:26:32] Hello, welcome back to the weekend with me, don't thank you so much for your company this Sunday [00:26:36] afternoon, now you may not have noticed, I'm just looking through the papers, there's not a lot of [00:26:40] coverage, it has to be said, it is day two the lib dem [00:26:44] conference and so Ed Dave is taking aim at reform and Elon [00:26:48] Musk, as is his want, he always does that, the party is gearing up [00:26:52] for a fight as Britain's political battle lines are [00:26:55] redrawn, but if early election which we've just been talking [00:26:59] about came calling, how would the leb dems do... [00:27:02] to GB News Chief Political Correspondent Catherine Foster is in [00:27:06] Brighton for us. Katherine, how's it [00:27:09] going? [00:27:12] Good afternoon from a sunny Brighton where the Libdems [00:27:16] are on their second day their conference. They're talking about [00:27:20] the economy. Sir Ed Davey is wanting [00:27:23] a 12p uh fuel duty [00:27:27] cut at the pumps. He thinks that will help people with the cost of living. He [00:27:31] wants that uh and till at least Christmas [00:27:34] and the party faithful are all here of [00:27:37] course, but are they cutting through more [00:27:41] broadly with the public? well, I'm joined now by the Liberal [00:27:45] Democrat MP for Chitchester, Jess [00:27:49] Brown Fuller who is also the justice spokesperson. thank you so much for joining [00:27:53] us on GB News. first of all, just run [00:27:56] us through these cost of living uh measures that the libdems are [00:28:00] talking about today, and also your... Treasury spokesperson Daisy [00:28:04] Cooper has been speaking about Libdem plans for the economy. Yeah, so [00:28:08] we need to address the cost of living crisis right now. It's getting more and more hard for [00:28:12] families to be able to get to the end the month. There is something the government can do [00:28:16] right away. They are having an extra two billion in revenue coming into the [00:28:20] treasury via the pumps at the moment, because the increased [00:28:23] costs. They could take fuel duty off by 10 p, [00:28:27] which would save average about six pound for a tank of petrol that will make a big [00:28:31] difference. for people filling up so that they can get to work and take their [00:28:35] children places, but also Daisy Cooper's had her big keynote [00:28:39] speech today where she's been talking about all the things that we need to do for [00:28:42] businesses, because businesses are really struggling, labor is additional jobs, [00:28:46] tax, national insurance increases, energy [00:28:50] increases means that they are really struggling [00:28:53] to grow in the way that they want to, and so Daisy has proposed a [00:28:57] whole host of measures uh to cut the red tape around running [00:29:01] business to make it... easier for them to actually grow, you're [00:29:05] announcing all these policies, but it's quite difficult, isn't it for the liberal [00:29:08] democrats to get hearing, uh, more in common, have done a word [00:29:12] cloud of what people associate with the liberal democrats and [00:29:16] the biggest answer was, don't know, followed by not sure, [00:29:20] weak, boring or irrelevant, that's a problem for you, isn't it? [00:29:24] well, what I would say to that is that we are also the [00:29:27] most popular party for our opposition members, so the majority [00:29:31] of people that... vote liberal democrats would consider voting liberal [00:29:35] democrats, that's not the case for most other parties, so we have huge [00:29:39] potential in in the country to grow our supporter [00:29:43] base, and that's why we're here talking to organizations like GB News, we're [00:29:47] not afraid to get out there and talk about the things that we believe in, such [00:29:51] as growing the economy, cutting taxes for working people, and [00:29:55] making life easier on on everybody in the [00:29:58] UK. you've got 71 MPs, but people [00:30:02] a Nigel Farasion Reform or Zak Polanski seem to [00:30:06] get um the headlines and and the polling would [00:30:09] suggest that you guys have gone backwards, in fact there's a poll out today that has you on [00:30:13] just 8%. How do you get [00:30:17] heard in this very noisy five-party political [00:30:21] environment when people get their social media uh [00:30:24] you know news off social media these little soundb? I would argue [00:30:28] that the only poll that counts is polling day and over the last [00:30:31] eight is every ling every single local council election the Liberal [00:30:35] Democrats have made gains and since the general election we've won more [00:30:39] council by-elections than any the other parties that includes [00:30:43] reform, so we are successful at the ballot box and in [00:30:46] 2024 a day we returned the most successful result for [00:30:50] the Liberal Democrats and if you have a Liberal Democrat MP you know about it [00:30:54] because they're in their community working hard and talking about the issues that matter to [00:30:58] those people uh so I I don't agree that we're falling backwards we [00:31:02] are. ambitious about the next general election and I think that we will [00:31:05] return games. Well, the gen next general election might come uh [00:31:09] sooner than 2029, uh, some suggestions that Andy Burnham [00:31:13] might decide uh that... sooner or than later is the best policy, he could [00:31:17] lose his majority. you might be looking a situation that [00:31:21] Andy Burnham comes and asks for a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. I'm [00:31:25] very clear, and I know that my party is very clear that we [00:31:29] need to prevent Nigel Farage getting the keys to number 10, because I do not [00:31:33] want to see Trump's America become farage's [00:31:36] Britain, and so we are focused before that general election on getting as many [00:31:40] liberal Democrats elected as possible, be it in local councils or in [00:31:44] parliament. the next general election, that's where our focus should be, rather than [00:31:48] talking about different scenarios about what could happen after a general [00:31:52] election, we should focus on getting the job done now, cutting taxes for [00:31:55] people now, making it more affordable for people now and [00:31:59] getting lots of liberal democrats elected, and just finally Andy Burnham [00:32:03] talks like normal person, people seem to like him, but he's got all the same difficult [00:32:07] decisions, uh, they don't seem very keen to cut things like [00:32:11] welfare or find money for defense, [00:32:15] "do you worry at all that he is people pleaser and [00:32:19] that he wants to do things that we simply can't afford? yeah, he doesn't like saying no to [00:32:23] people, and he's shown that very quickly in parliament, he says all the right things, he [00:32:27] says, "i really agree with you, that's really hard, but we're not actually seeing the [00:32:30] tangible proof in the pudding, there's something he can do, we're happy for him to take [00:32:34] our idea, spend two billion that he's got additional revenue in the [00:32:38] treasury and take off fuel duty right now and save [00:32:42] people money at the pumps, we're happy to gift him" that idea, the [00:32:46] Liberal Democrats have lots of ideas to bring down the cost of living, but he's going to [00:32:50] need to start proving that he's not just vibes politician, he's actually got the [00:32:53] things [00:32:54] to to back that up, yes indeed, well Jess brown Fuller, thank [00:32:58] you very much indeed for talking to us in GB News [00:33:02] uh, we will be bringing you more throughout the afternoon from conference [00:33:06] at Bryson. Catherine, thank you so much, Katherine, [00:33:09] before you go, if you do get to talk to any more uh [00:33:13] Libdem MP, [00:33:15] me just ask one question that lots of viewers are asking at the moment, mean just [00:33:19] just said if you have a libdem MP you know about it, well the [00:33:22] people of Piddington certainly know about it, they [00:33:26] have got a Libdem MP and they Calla Miller to [00:33:29] be a bit [00:33:30] but is his name, and they're obviously not happy with the libdem fees so if you could get [00:33:34] answer for many people are asking that question, they want to know what [00:33:38] the libdem is going to do about Piddington because they don't seem to be doing much at the [00:33:41] moment, well the libdem MP for. Washington has [00:33:45] already [00:33:47] said that uh, it's not appropriate to house people on that military base, but I will [00:33:51] have sit downown interview with Sred Davy, tomorrow, but I will certainly be [00:33:54] raising the issue of Piddington with him, but [00:33:57] it is interesting isn't it of course, because the Libdemp feels that [00:34:01] it is not right, the right fit uh for the village uh, and [00:34:05] they agree with Reform on that, they agree with the conservatives on [00:34:09] that, although they are very, very anti uh the [00:34:13] rhetoric and the language and... messaging coming out of reform [00:34:17] more generally. Okay, Katherine, look forward to that interview with um Sir Ed Davy. Thank you so [00:34:21] much, that's GB News chief political correspondent Katherine Foster in [00:34:24] Brighton. And so many of you asking that question about the Livederms and the Piddington [00:34:28] situation, obviously [00:34:29] as you know with the migrant camp being there with 1,300 nearly [00:34:33] young men to village population of 350. They do have a [00:34:37] Libdem MP, Callan Miller, he's his name, [00:34:41] and he is also the foreign affairs spokes person. for [00:34:45] the party, so hopefully Katherine might be able to get a quick chat with him as [00:34:49] well. [00:40:35] hello and welcome back. sorry about that that fizzy over is [00:40:39] comment. any case it was funny. it made me laugh and come on we can have a bit of a giggle [00:40:42] because life is too seriously. this is the weekend on juba news and [00:40:46] i'm refusing to take life too seriously because it's too blooming [00:40:50] short. any case? let's talk about edge shiran because a [00:40:53] bit like the royal saga this one is rumbling on and on. [00:40:57] Um, Ed Sheeren had to apologize to fans at his Philadelphia [00:41:01] show as he addressed that fallout over rapper Macalmore being [00:41:05] drop from the tour after making pro Palestinian comments on [00:41:09] stage. Have listen. I don't want to disappoint fans [00:41:13] and I've never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the [00:41:17] middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and [00:41:21] the most complex political issue on the [00:41:23] planet. Um, tickets for [00:41:26] Edshire. American stadium tour have since plummeted to just [00:41:30] 40 pounds, sounds like lot of money to me still, but um, so has one of [00:41:34] Britain's biggest stars become the latest casualty of [00:41:38] Americas, not just Americas, let's be... honest here, everybody's [00:41:41] culture was uh GB News Showbe's editor Alex [00:41:45] Davis joins us now. Alex, good to see you, thanks for joining [00:41:49] us. And Alex, what did you make of what Ed Shiron had to say last night, how he [00:41:52] handled it? I actually thought he handled it uh, pretty [00:41:56] well, I have to say, this is a man who, I would, I want to say, [00:42:00] inadvertently found himself at the center of this entire Sager, it [00:42:04] dates back to the rapper Macalmore who made these pro Palestine [00:42:08] comments tour, and... he was dismissed by from the tour, not [00:42:12] by Ed Sheeren, which I think is pointnet is lost, it was [00:42:15] by the Mina touring group and under the [00:42:19] encouragement of venue owner Robert [00:42:22] Craft. Robert Craft is billionaire, ally of Israel, he said, [00:42:26] if you're going to have [00:42:27] this guy open for you, he's not doing it in my stadium, and as [00:42:30] result Macalmore was dismissed, so Ed Sheiren's famously a [00:42:34] political, and all of sudden he's found himself in the center of this entire [00:42:38] political debate, which he did not want to... in, but last night, as you [00:42:41] say, he had to address it, I feel, if he had gone on [00:42:45] stage and just started singing with his [00:42:48] guitar, I i want to say it wouldn't have placated the [00:42:52] mob, but I mean there is no placating the mob at this point, but I think it [00:42:55] it was as good as damage control as he could have done, he is getting a bit of [00:42:59] stick for quote unquote you [00:43:02] know going falling into their hands and [00:43:05] capitulating to the mob, but I don't really think that's the case, he's [00:43:10] had to say something, he addressed both sides the argument again, he [00:43:13] described what happened in Israel on October 7th [00:43:17] as you know awful, he also described what's been going on in [00:43:21] Gaza as likewise just [00:43:24] heartbreaking and he's struggled to come to turns with [00:43:27] both, but luckily there was a few, it's been described [00:43:31] as small but loud pro- palestine activists outside the [00:43:35] venue, not much of it seaked inside, he seemed to get on without [00:43:39] a hit. inside the stadium, sadly he had to remove one [00:43:43] the stages because he was so afraid of what the reception he would [00:43:47] receive be, he he said on stage, he didn't people were going to be throwing things at [00:43:51] him, he was scared for his own safety, but his big message and the [00:43:54] reason why he carried on doing this tour is because, mean quote and quote, it's [00:43:58] a bit sappy, because he wants to create an environment for love [00:44:02] and people from all backgrounds to come together to his shows and get [00:44:06] away from the politics and [00:44:09] you know he was tearful. 'I fully bought it, I think it genuinely he's [00:44:12] described the past week as the worst week of his life, I can't [00:44:16] imagine it's been anything less, no, I can imagine, the the [00:44:20] thing is with this, Alex, how much the [00:44:23] outrage that the outporing of anger and hatred and [00:44:27] some the stuff you're seeing on social media is performative, I [00:44:31] mean edgeron fans are going to be edgeron fans no matter what I [00:44:34] suspect, so how many the people that are getting so outraged about [00:44:38] this are actually?' even know what they're talking about lot the time, mean [00:44:42] i remember doing an interview and asking someone what from the river to the seamen and [00:44:46] they were shouting free gas or free palastine, they didn't even know what that meant, [00:44:50] but mean so how much of [00:44:51] it is just like jumping on that bandwagon where free gaza is [00:44:55] literally everything at the moment? i would [00:44:58] guess quite a bit of it to be honest with you, it's incredibly sad, the sad [00:45:02] thing is is that you got people like polona faith and musicians [00:45:06] who have been actively pro-palestinian are coming out. and saying [00:45:10] ridiculous things for the cause, but also saying that edgeren is a very nice [00:45:14] guy, and it's like, okay, so you know that this guy isn't [00:45:18] this zionist, awful human [00:45:21] being, yet you do still feel the needs to put the cause, [00:45:25] quote and quote above what you actually know as fact, [00:45:29] you know, I think one the big problems, I mean it, it needs a much longer [00:45:32] conversation, but one the big problems with free palestiners are [00:45:36] quotes, is it encompasses all angles, there are people out? [00:45:40] there who believe that Israel and every all of its population should be wiped from the [00:45:44] face the earth, there are more moderates out there who believe that [00:45:47] you know two-state solution is the way forward and through the vague [00:45:51] term of free palestine they both fall under [00:45:53] the same branch and that's why [00:45:55] i feel it's become so so toxic in the sense where anybody [00:45:59] who's rational can say you know those two [00:46:02] words can mean a wide breathth of things to get somebody [00:46:06] like [00:46:06] get shirin and political to go on stage and say that als caught that [00:46:10] cause requires lot more depth to actually know what he's actually talking [00:46:14] about, whereas people like Makelmore and the more performative [00:46:18] artists will say it willilly nilly cuz it appeases the masses. well [00:46:21] exactly gets you gets you those likes and ticks on social media doesn't it as opposed to [00:46:25] death threats uh Alex thank you so much for joining us that's GB News Showbes [00:46:29] editor Alex Davis just quickly jullian anderson the actress [00:46:33] put a little clip out on social media talking about Sudan the situation in [00:46:37] Sudan where millions of people are are have been... killed, it's just [00:46:40] awful, it's a it's a proper genocide right, so she did this little clip raising [00:46:44] awareness of Sudan, what's happening to the Sudan right, and the comments on [00:46:48] her post were, well why aren't you talking about Gaza, and it's like it's... [00:46:52] just it's an insane thing that you can't even talk [00:46:56] about you know what else is going on in other countries without people instantly [00:47:00] going yeah free gaza free palestine what's going on at why how dare you are [00:47:04] you azish why don't you care about gaza why are you talking about sudan [00:47:08] it the world has gone bonkers any case uh let's [00:47:11] get back to some sanity show i'm done this is chip news and if you are [00:47:15] in search of some holiday sun and i couldn't blame you one john at the [00:47:19] moment here's the forecast for those top european destinations [00:47:27] Ready to soak up that holiday sunshine? [00:51:20] hello, welcome back to the weekend with me, It's time for the sport [00:51:24] with Aden McGee aden, good to see you, good to see you dawn, I want to focus on something quite [00:51:27] serious which is unusual for me in the sports sp [00:51:31] updates, but yeah [00:51:32] it is [00:51:32] a bit, what's in journalist, how [00:51:36] dare you? anyway, so jim rackliff, i think you mentioned him earlier else in the early on in [00:51:40] the in the program, but we'll hear from him a moment exactly what he said about [00:51:43] immigration uh in that BBC interview earlier this week, but he bought a [00:51:47] 27.7% stake in the club didn't he two years ago uh, [00:51:51] he has stayed. in Monaco since I think it's 2020 I think [00:51:54] he moved moved over there he's sacked two managers since then and he sacked [00:51:58] 450 redundancies remember he's dragged into that that argument about the cost of [00:52:02] paperclips as well so he's not really engendered a great. [00:52:05] of of uh good goodwill among Man United fans, I think it's fair to say, then there were the [00:52:09] conf the the comments last February about [00:52:13] immigration saying that uh, the country was on the slide, and then there [00:52:16] was the there was the apology from the from the club, they said that we are inclusive [00:52:20] organization, and then he kind of repeated those allegations, or not allegations, those [00:52:24] comments say yesterday, let's hear what he had to say, at the moment [00:52:28] I think the UK is on the slide, it's quite difficult to see [00:52:32] how we arrested, but I think... ultimately we [00:52:36] need politicians, two two things: we need politicians [00:52:39] who are tough enough to deal with some very difficult problems, and we know what the [00:52:43] problems are, and we need politicians who will make decisions which are [00:52:47] good for the country, not good for themselves and their [00:52:50] party. if the the Muslim fans [00:52:54] group at United has said that after those initial comments [00:52:58] uh he apologized for his choice of language, we hoped that [00:53:02] a lesson had been learned, clearly it has not, we find his... his comments deeply [00:53:05] disappointing and completely unacceptable, they go to say that he should step down, [00:53:09] now [00:53:10] I don't think they understand how this works, he owns 27% the club and he [00:53:14] invested 1.2 billion pounds of his own money uh to uh [00:53:18] to to buy into the club, you can't if even if he did step down then somebody else would just be carrying [00:53:22] his interest going forward, so it's a bit ridiculous from that point of view, they're playing [00:53:26] latest today Manchester United in terms of what they need on the pitch, I mean they definitely need a win that's for sure, [00:53:30] Michael Carrick seems to be under a little bit of pressure, just one win all season up against Zipswitch in [00:53:34] their second - second match and they suffered that defeat earlier in the week didn't they against [00:53:38] Brighton where they were 2-il two they did yeah first time in 50 years they'd surrendered [00:53:41] two-goal lead at home to lose 3-2 so absolutely extraordinary there we must mention [00:53:45] mill and west ham yesterday - mill 2-0 up i think they were t up when i left the [00:53:49] studio yesterday but we're trying not to talk about it though weren't we [00:53:52] were indeed and then west ham pulled it around only six [00:53:56] arrests made yesterday which i think in crowd of [00:53:58] 19,600 people is pretty good [00:54:02] and mean i they [00:54:04] far bit for me. suggest otherwise, but I think [00:54:06] that the policing was possibly a little bit heavy-handed with 400 um combined [00:54:10] operation between the mets and city of London police to get 400 police on [00:54:14] the on the ground, I think it was um yeah [00:54:17] it was a little bit over zelous, yeah I think it might have been over egged, but they had that [00:54:21] section 60 order for the fixture which went up until 8:00 last night, which means I [00:54:25] had to be very good girl cuz I lived in that order that didn't get stopped [00:54:29] and at my age love I just be [00:54:31] grateful thank you so much and Always [00:54:35] okay uh, I'm done, this is the weekend and there is much more coming [00:54:39] up after, oh yeah, it's the weather, always the weather, here [00:54:41] it is, [00:54:47] expect warm spells with the odd rude [00:54:51] interruption, box boiler sponsors the weather on [00:54:55] GB News, hello there, good afternoon, welcome to your [00:54:59] GB news weather update from the Met office, it should be quite a fine end to [00:55:03] the day for many of us, though a change coming through tonight in the north where [00:55:06] we'll eventually see more rain coming through, but under clearer skies it will be [00:55:10] turning a bit chillier than of late. for the time being though, high pressure [00:55:14] continues to build across the southwest meaning it should be quite a fine end to [00:55:18] the day, plenty of clear skies, so eventually across the north we'll start to see more [00:55:22] cloud push through towards the northwest and eventually through the early hours the [00:55:26] morning we'll see rain progress through here, eventually into northern island, parts [00:55:30] of Scotland and northwest England. to the south of this though, plenty of [00:55:34] clear skies, turning a bit chillier here, rural areas under the clearest [00:55:37] skies could drop down to around 2 to 4°grees celsius, so quite a chilly [00:55:41] start by the time we reach Monday morning for some, but [00:55:45] it is eventually going to start to turn a bit warmer, a bit muggier, particularly across the [00:55:48] north where we'll see some clouds, some rain, this could turn quite persistent across the [00:55:52] hills of Scotland, also quite cloudy and damp start across northern [00:55:56] ireland, northern England we'll see some patchy cloud and possibly some [00:56:00] light outbacks of rain towards the far northwest, elsewhere across England and [00:56:04] Wales the... it should be quite a bright start to [00:56:06] the day, [00:56:06] a little bit chilly, some patchy fog in places, though this should soon clear [00:56:10] through the course the morning and remaining quite dry and settled here with some [00:56:14] sunshine, towards the north though, different story remaining quite cloudy [00:56:18] with some rain and drizzle, this quite persistent around western hills through [00:56:22] the course the day, much lighter winds and feeling warm in the sunshine [00:56:25] once again, but return of that muggy feel, temperatures pushing into the [00:56:29] mid-20s for many areas, including eastern areas of Scotland where they might start [00:56:33] to see some breaks in the cloud, lady on into the [00:56:36] day. now through Monday night, there's not much change, there's [00:56:39] still this north south split in the weather, so plenty of cloud towards the north, some [00:56:43] rain and drizzle, but some clearer skies towards the south. we'll still [00:56:47] see plenty of fine weather into next week, though some rain and showers across the north at times [00:56:51] and temperatures eventually returning to more average for this point the [00:56:54] year. expect warm [00:56:57] spells with the odd rude [00:57:00] interruption. box boilers sponsors the weather [00:57:04] on GB News! Sunday the 20th of September and [01:00:19] this is the weekend on Jubin News. Thank you so much for joining me this [01:00:23] lunchtime. Okay, Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim [01:00:26] Ratcliff has sparked a political row over Britain's economic [01:00:30] decline, immigration and tax. Pretty much everything to be honest with you, but [01:00:34] Brigit Philipson has hit back, but is RatCliff [01:00:37] right about the state of Britain and that we're a slide of [01:00:40] decline, and there's a growing [01:00:44] evidence that Andy Burnham is considering a general. in the [01:00:48] next year as he seeks a mandate to raise taxes, he doesn't have one at the [01:00:52] moment, so is there a general election next [01:00:55] year, and are you looking forward to it if there is? will [01:00:59] they here? we care, we [01:01:03] fight, we care, we [01:01:06] fight, we care, we fight, that's the lib [01:01:10] dem conference underway in Brighton, our chief political correspondent [01:01:13] Catherine Forster has the latest for us. [01:01:20] "here today, sir Ed Dave is talking about [01:01:23] 12p [01:01:24] of liter of petrol at the pumps, just one the Libdem's [01:01:27] suggestions on the cost of living, but they are languishing at just [01:01:31] 8% in the polls, is the public [01:01:35] listening to what they are [01:01:36] offering? yes, and [01:01:40] yeah, the another story that just never goes away. uh, Britain could face [01:01:44] legal action from Caribbean nations now, who are demanding..." those [01:01:47] slavery reparations, the r over historical injustice is [01:01:51] escalating and now we are going to be sued for being racist or something or [01:01:54] other, which means you and I will be footing the [01:01:57] bill, and the royal British [01:02:01] legion aram appeals to help run his annual poppy appeal. [01:02:05] We'll have a lovely little report on that one for you. Vitally important [01:02:09] for us to support those, those that are serving and those that have served, of [01:02:13] course those guys and ladies have gone out and they have [01:02:17] given them. all for us and so it is great for us to be [01:02:20] able to just give that b little bit back to them to say thank [01:02:24] you and this [01:02:28] is the weekend [01:02:43] So thank you so much for your company, this lunch time, really [01:02:46] appreciate it. I feel like we're like a little family now at the weekend, so sort of like [01:02:50] regular, have nice chat and don't take anything too seriously, because you [01:02:54] know it is a Sunday luncht [01:02:56] and you went to be chilling with your family and I'm so so grateful that you're chilling with me. [01:03:00] as well - gbnews.com/yorsa is a way to get involved [01:03:04] or scan that QR code and lots of you are doing so about [01:03:07] edgeren. now me neither, not a big edgeren fan, but this this [01:03:11] debate goes much much deeper than just edgeren, doesn't it? and [01:03:15] as our walker said it's not about Gaza, it's anti-Israel. [01:03:18] dare say most them, most them the free gaza, free palestine [01:03:22] ones. most them couldn't pick Gaza out a map [01:03:26] without Google, and Clevser said Shiron is making... [01:03:30] bigger mistake by back pedaling, you have principles, you stick with [01:03:33] them, not be bullied by load of woke, lovey, [01:03:37] virtual signalers, you did absolutely nothing wrong, ed, mean to be [01:03:41] honest with you, all he had to do was stand on stage and say free pala sign and this would have all gone [01:03:45] away, but why should you, why should you have to do that? let me [01:03:48] know your thoughts on all those stories we're discussing and anything you want to chat about to be honest [01:03:52] with is Sunday and that's what we're here for, all of that coming up off your news [01:03:56] headlines with Bethany LC. [01:04:04] "good afternoon, your top stories from the GB News room at three minutes past [01:04:08] two. Earl Spencer says there are similarities between how both [01:04:12] his sister, princess Diana, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been [01:04:16] treated by the media. Harry and Megan, who recently returned to the UK [01:04:20] from California six years after stepping back from royal duties, have been [01:04:24] repeatedly critical the press. Speaking to the BBC, he said [01:04:28] daily criticism from the..." media must be cancerous [01:04:32] influence in their life. It would be really beholding on people [01:04:36] to learn from Diana's example, I'm not here to speak for Harry and [01:04:39] Megan, but for anyone who's being destroyed in this [01:04:43] way daily, it must be such cancerous influence in [01:04:47] their life. One the problems with Diana was, she's very, very sensitive [01:04:51] to criticism, and of course, I'm sure most of your [01:04:55] viewers now think, oh, she had this splendid life, and it was all amazing, and she didn't, [01:04:59] she was so privileged and... so perfect in so many ways, but she was [01:05:02] really brought low by all that criticism, and yeah, I suppose it's a [01:05:06] pity when I see echos of that now. [01:05:10] Ed Sheeren has apologized to fans for making mistakes as he [01:05:14] opened a solo show in Philadelphia. All the singers [01:05:18] support acts, including his band, have quit the current loop tour [01:05:22] after the US rapper McLamore was dropped for making pro-Palestinian [01:05:26] comments. She erin said that decision was taken by promoters. [01:05:30] not him, but said he was sorry for his handling the [01:05:33] controversy that followed. I don't want to disappoint [01:05:37] fans and I've never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me [01:05:41] in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of [01:05:45] speech and the most complex political issue on the planet. [01:05:49] He went to say the October 7th Hamasled [01:05:53] attacks were horrific, but said Israel's treatment of residents in [01:05:57] Gaza is unjustifiable. [01:06:00] At least two people have been killed and six others injured in one the biggest [01:06:04] Ukrainian drone attacks on the Moscow region overnight. Officials [01:06:08] in Russia say more than 200 drones had been shot down and fires [01:06:12] were reported in several residential houses and an oil [01:06:16] refinery. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, mother and her two [01:06:19] three-year-old children have been killed in the Kiev region. The governor [01:06:23] there says that area has endured constant hostile attacks for more than a [01:06:27] day with 31 sights damaged and five [01:06:30] districts, so Ed Davis says [01:06:34] he's confident [01:06:35] the Libdems can take on Nigel Farage and Zak Palansky at the next general [01:06:39] election, insisting he has the charisma to compete with [01:06:42] both. Speaking at the party conference in Brighton, he said if the Liberal [01:06:46] Democrats were to form the next government, they would cut fuel duty [01:06:50] and rail and bus fairs a cost of around two billion pounds a [01:06:53] year. [01:06:54] Got to help people with the costling, particularly the rise in filling your car up [01:06:58] at the pumps of petrol and diesel. "thanks to Trump's idiotic war [01:07:02] with Iran, people are paying a fortune just to fill up the car, so [01:07:06] we think we should have cut in fuel duty tax for the next three [01:07:10] months to cut the price you pay at the pumps by 12p [01:07:13] liter, that would really bring help just when it's needed, and it will pay for [01:07:17] itself, because the government's getting huge amounts of tax revenue from these higher oil and [01:07:21] gas prices, they should give it back to people, [01:07:25] and the conservatives are calling on labor to cut welfare spending in next month's [01:07:29] budget." warning the government must confront what they describe as [01:07:32] Britain's economic peril. The route comes as inflation reaches [01:07:36] five-month high of 3.1% with Chancellor John Healey due to [01:07:40] deliver the budget at the end of October. but Bridget Philipson [01:07:43] insists, benefits support young people into work and lifts [01:07:47] children out of poverty, some the hardest working [01:07:51] people I know are people that are in law-paid jobs, they work incredibly hard, [01:07:55] they do the right thing, they don't earn huge amounts of money, and they deserve support [01:07:59] to, and to that point about child poverty, one the biggest indicators is to what [01:08:03] whether you will go to live a good life where you can contribute as whether you grow up in [01:08:06] poverty, therefore tackling child poverty, lifting children out of poverty is [01:08:10] absolutely the right thing [01:08:12] to do. Um, [01:08:40] especially Tilly, good afternoon. Tilly, we're... how are you, you're normally in touch straight away, good [01:08:44] afternoon, tilly, thank you for the message, and lesley, thank you so much for your [01:08:47] message as well, dawn, i love your jacket today, ps, hate the bright yellow [01:08:51] one, well it's not my favorite either, but come on, mean i'm just [01:08:55] trying to you dress like a highlighter basically uh, you can get in touch about [01:08:59] anything we're talking about, by the way, gbnews.com/oursate, joining the [01:09:02] conversation, you don't have to talk about clothing uh, you can talk about whatever you want, you can talk [01:09:06] about this story, which lot of you already are, now the chair the [01:09:10] labour party has hit bag Manchester United co-owner sir Jim [01:09:14] Rackliff for claiming the UK is on the slide because of [01:09:18] high taxes and immigration. Bridget Philipson told GB [01:09:22] News she rejects his criticism. I'm not [01:09:25] sure I want to be hearing too much from someone who's a tax exileus to what they think is to the direction of our [01:09:29] company working people, people who work hard expect to see rewards for that [01:09:33] contribution. It's why they will have seen in in recent months with the new [01:09:37] prime minister Andy Burnam a real focus on giving people more breathing space [01:09:41] around VAT. electricity bills around bus fairs, around business [01:09:44] rates cuts for hospitality, which is incredibly important part of our [01:09:48] economy, I think that shows the direction that this government wishes to go in, to [01:09:52] recognize the contribution that people make and to make sure that they are awarded for [01:09:56] doing so. okay, it comes after the [01:09:59] Manchester United Muslim supporters club called for Sir [01:10:03] Jim Ratcliff to go following his claim that Britain has [01:10:07] been colonized by immigrants, which is something he said a couple of [01:10:11] months ago, but his double down on it, basically blaming [01:10:14] immigration and benefits for the slide into [01:10:18] decline that he's talking about. okay, joining me now is the deputy editor [01:10:22] of cap x, oscar gill lewis. oscar, good to see you, [01:10:26] thank you so much for joining. what do you make of what sir Jim Ratcliff [01:10:30] has had to say? to be on the show. i think what [01:10:34] Jim Ratcliff said is completely right and it's important that we have people coming [01:10:38] out to say that, that that things are not going well. [01:10:42] economically in Britain and we need to make a change and that [01:10:46] when people like Andy Burnam and Ed Davy come out saying oh let's give [01:10:50] people breathing space or let's give people a little bit of room or a little bit of help they [01:10:54] completely misunderstand the point we're a high debt with high [01:10:57] borrowing cost low tax low high tax high [01:11:01] um low growth economy and Jim Rack is completely right to [01:11:05] point and what did you make i mean bridget phillipson I mean [01:11:09] to be fair she has point I mean [01:11:13] has built [01:11:13] his business up from scratch, employed a lot of people, etc etc. [01:11:16] that much we know, but he is tax exile and bridget saying, well [01:11:20] why would i take any notice of a tech? she does have point, [01:11:24] doesn't she? does she done? mean, when are we going to be f to [01:11:28] brigit philipson? mean, i don't think [01:11:31] that uh, makes his point any less true [01:11:35] if he said it if he was still here. now we have a really high [01:11:39] tax economy and it really punishes people like jim and many the... [01:11:43] um just ordinary workers in [01:11:45] the UK, but Jim Ratclift is serious operator, he knows what he's talking [01:11:48] about, just because he's moved to Monaco, he's done that because of [01:11:52] incentives, britt philipson outside she does because of incentives, [01:11:56] people on welfare out, they do because of incentives, just because he's moved to Monaco, it [01:12:00] doesn't make his [01:12:00] point any less valid, and what do you make the [01:12:04] reaction from the Manchester United Muslim supporters [01:12:07] club who are saying that his comments on [01:12:11] immigration? and people receiving benefits are the [01:12:15] reason that Britain is in that slide to decline? do [01:12:19] they have point? i understand why they [01:12:23] might be annoyed with Jim Ratcliff because the comments. now at the start I don't [01:12:27] believe that he doubled down on saying that UK is being colonized [01:12:30] but he [01:12:30] did double down saying that uh Britain can't handle [01:12:34] the immigration problem and the welfare problem. now these are two really big [01:12:38] problems in the UK um but [01:12:42] i don't think they're right to get annoyed or call for j to lead because of [01:12:46] that, he's entitled to his opinion. now if he's not doing a good job with [01:12:50] United, then maybe they've got a point to call for it, but not because of what [01:12:54] he said about immigration. or welfare okay, [01:12:57] and the Italy have recently introduced a [01:13:01] scheme to encourage wealthy business [01:13:04] owners who are going [01:13:06] to go for growth to come back into the country, to move back [01:13:09] to Italy. um, it has been suggested that maybe that is something we [01:13:13] should consider in this country. do you think what [01:13:17] Italy are doing makes sense by paying the wealthy, [01:13:21] business generators and wealth generators to move back to Italy? [01:13:25] to grow the economy, do you think that makes sense? i think [01:13:29] it does make sense. mean, one the things that pointed out in his [01:13:32] comments is that the us for example uh [01:13:36] welcomes wealthy people and in encourages wealth and encourages success [01:13:40] and ristaking. it is completely right for Italy, which has been [01:13:43] stagnant for the last 20 years, no growth and for [01:13:47] multiple years to try and bring the people who grow economies [01:13:51] back. and it is true, mean this is fact. that even [01:13:55] bridget phillipson couldn't ignore that more than uh 16,00 millionaires [01:13:59] left the UK last year, that's the highest exodus [01:14:02] ever recorded according to this one particular report, and [01:14:06] these are the people that pay most taxes and you [01:14:10] know all this sort of like oh what they don't pay tax, yet many them do, mean [01:14:14] fred done whose family um paid 400 million pounds in [01:14:18] taxes last year, he says he's too old to use to leave the UK, [01:14:21] but if he could he would what? you say to those [01:14:25] people that saying, well, [01:14:27] you know, if you're a millionaire or billionaire and you're leaving the country, you really can't love your [01:14:31] country, you should be here supporting [01:14:33] it. it's an interesting comment, [01:14:37] it's not one that i've heard before, mean i i think that Jim RatCliff still [01:14:41] clearly lives loves his country and loves you know the United Kingdom [01:14:44] and he's bought a football club and has businesses that do business in the [01:14:48] UK, um, mean he's left for personal reasons, but there are [01:14:52] plenty of people who leave for personal reasons they maintain the city. and shit i [01:14:55] don't think it devalues um his patriotism [01:14:59] any less, and one [01:15:02] the things [01:15:02] we really got to point out is that uh the people like chriss and [01:15:06] and the're such huge tax payers [01:15:10] and that [01:15:13] the the chris workers is tax income last year was the equivalent to [01:15:17] 3800 tax median tax [01:15:20] pay mean that really is insane the fact that the andy burn and the bridget philipson look [01:15:24] at that and don't see that we are a high tax economy [01:15:28] driving um the wealth creators, driving the [01:15:32] innovators out [01:15:33] of our economy, it's really ridiculous and it's actually it's quite worrying, [01:15:37] indeed, yeah we do seem to have the politics of envy large at the [01:15:41] moment, um thank you so much for joining me, that's oscar gill [01:15:45] lewis there who is deputy editor of capx, thank you very much for that [01:15:48] one, let me know what you think, many of you are getting in touch obviously supporting [01:15:52] sir, jim rackliff which i'm not surprised by and and and that is fact, we can't [01:15:56] annoy, ignore the fact that 16,00 millionaires left the [01:16:00] UK last year, the highest exodus ever. um, so [01:16:04] let's stick with politics, shall we and talk about early election? yeah, [01:16:08] because the country is, as we know, not doing too well [01:16:11] financially at the moment, so is the prime minister plotting [01:16:15] early election? well, labor sources today claim Andy Burnham wants to [01:16:19] call that snap election within the next year to seek the fresh mandate [01:16:23] to yeah, raise taxes, great selling point, I wouldn't have thought, [01:16:26] but Chancellor John Healey is reportedly considering series of [01:16:30] tax rises ahead of next month's budget, wealth taxes um, [01:16:34] it seems to be the way they're aiming for at the moment, as a treasury looks [01:16:38] to raise an extra 10 to 15 billion to fill that black hole, we've been [01:16:42] here before, haven't we? Let's talk now to a former advisor to Andy [01:16:45] Burnham, Kevin McGeever. Kevin, good to see you, thank you so much for [01:16:49] joining me. I mean, Kevin, you are a former advisor to Andy Burnham, [01:16:53] and should he call? a general [01:16:55] election? um, i think you [01:16:59] should always have that on the table as an option don, but i don't think it'll be a good [01:17:03] idea. i think first of all, he's only been in office two months, he's only [01:17:07] just come back in parliament sitting, he's in new york this week meeting president [01:17:10] trump, we got labor conference, and the budget, i think there's a lot of road to travel down [01:17:14] before any talk of an election converts um into one, i think more [01:17:18] importantly uh we need to see how the budget plays out and also how the [01:17:22] global uh context impacts us, the... oil prices [01:17:25] $110 a barrel, that's that's basically the largest [01:17:29] chunk of that fiscal headroom reduction you talked about, yes that's outside the [01:17:33] parents control, what's in his control is early election, i think you know [01:17:37] there is case talk of wealth taxes etc, they [01:17:41] wouldn't actually raise that much money, income tax would, but that would breach the [01:17:45] 24 manifesto and he's said he's fully committed to that, who goes [01:17:49] into an election saying they're going to raise income tax as their key plank, i [01:17:52] don't think that's wise, you don't uh p for the leadership for the last 10 [01:17:56] years just to throw it away to ask people to vote to pay more money, [01:18:00] but the problem Kevin is we do need to raise more money, I mean sort of like the the [01:18:04] pit benefits bill alone is set to double by 2030. mean [01:18:08] uh we're expected to be spending 19 billion a year more on [01:18:11] disability disability benefit payments by then we need to [01:18:15] get more money from somewhere we can't borrow anymore we're already up to our eyeballs in [01:18:18] debt so it has to come from [01:18:20] somewhere it does i think first of [01:18:24] all you have few places to look rather than just looking to raise tax [01:18:28] in and of itself the first is to look at some of that exculating [01:18:32] spend i think [01:18:33] the welfare secretary is looking [01:18:35] at disability benefits and pip and and others, I think [01:18:38] I don't think anyone thinks it's acceptable that bill should double uh and we should be footing [01:18:42] that um and also the best way to increase tax is [01:18:46] to increase growth that pays for it, you can't tax and ever [01:18:50] decreasing pi and expect this country to thrive, Andy [01:18:54] Burnham knows that, so I think actually everyone's talking about the [01:18:57] budget, I think that's going to be a bit of a non-event in so far as the [01:19:01] envelopes set, I think the bigger thing to look at is the 10-year [01:19:05] plan that is being launched around Christmas. "that will [01:19:08] set out what Andy Burnam's longer-term vision is, and I suspect there'll [01:19:12] be elements in that where he could go further if he had a general [01:19:16] election mandate, but that won't be just tax, that will be [01:19:19] suite of measures that tax may well form a part of it, so actually [01:19:23] I think all eyes on the 10-year plan rather than the budget, and that could potentially tell us [01:19:27] if there is going to be early election, but the simple fact [01:19:30] is, this parliament runs to 2029, you got [01:19:34] to give and he should give himself at least year to see if he's..." starts [01:19:38] to take effect, you're then into mid-27, you actually at that point [01:19:41] you're kind of in the run into a general election anyway, so I [01:19:45] think I think obviously people are going to talk about it, the media are going to get [01:19:48] excited about talk of early election and as our pulsters because it's good [01:19:52] for business, but I think um ultimately um Andy's got much [01:19:56] calm ahead than that. Okay, I mean, but it it's true, I mean the burn and [01:20:00] bounce is still bouncing along, I mean the latest poll put some four [01:20:04] points ahead of reform on 27. percent [01:20:08] reform on 23%, so it's bouncing quite well, he [01:20:12] could capitalize on that, I mean the longer it goes, that might start falling [01:20:15] off, exactly, and that is the the [01:20:19] risk calculation that him and the team are going to make. I think statistically, [01:20:23] new prime minister is never more popular than they are in the first three [01:20:27] months, it goes down after that. The only exception to that was Margaret Satter in the [01:20:31] Falklands, which is very unique set of circumstances, so I'm sure [01:20:35] people will be saying, go for it. I worked... the labor party under Gordon Brown when [01:20:39] everyone said go in 2007 and then he actually ultimately didn't do [01:20:42] so, I think looking back he probably wish he he had done [01:20:45] so you know history does actually give Andy Burnam many lessons bause there are [01:20:49] good ones and there are bad ones, I think if there is a longer term [01:20:53] lead poll inbed beds into the new year and that's got to be a [01:20:57] positive poll rating as well, not just because reform are struggling or in the other or [01:21:01] the green start to to tank from their peak in May and I think early [01:21:05] election is possible, but the fact is if you go... to the country a message that's [01:21:09] basically I'm chancing it cuz I'm quite popular I don't think [01:21:12] that would work but I think you're right just just very quickly and finally Kevin [01:21:15] you can you can tell me honestly here now we we know Andy likes being [01:21:19] liked I mean you man the people the TikTok videos etc [01:21:22] etc how's he going to cope with not being liked as [01:21:26] much because that is going to happen at some point isn't it [01:21:30] well he lost two leadership elections so certainly knows what it's like not to be like so I think he'll be all [01:21:34] right here come more tik tok videos that's what we Kevin, [01:21:38] thank you so much for joining us, that's former advisor to Andy Burnham, Kevin McGever [01:21:42] there, okay, I'm lots more coming up today's show, yeah, the [01:21:45] lib dem conference is underway in Brighton and our chief [01:21:49] political correspondent Katherine Forster has all the latest for [01:21:53] us, all of that and much more to come, this is Uby News, Britain's news channel, I'll see you [01:21:57] very [01:21:57] soon, [01:22:05] meet the easy to use. sungology smartphone with [01:22:09] its clear layout, large icons, easy to read text and simple [01:22:13] navigation. [01:25:52] Yes, well good afternoon from Brighton where the Liberal Democrats are [01:25:56] talking about the economy today. Yesterday, Sir Davy [01:26:00] gave a speech uh, having a pop at Donald [01:26:04] Trump, having a pop at Nigel Farage, talking about [01:26:07] nasty populism and saying that the libdems [01:26:11] care and will fight it. Today they're [01:26:14] talking about a proposed 12p of liter of [01:26:18] fuel at the pump. uh also slashing the bus cap [01:26:22] to one pound and the economy more broadly and their [01:26:25] plans to grow it. so let's talk now to Al Pinkerton, [01:26:29] who is the Liberal Democrat MP for Surry Heath [01:26:33] and Europe spokesperson. thank you so much for talking to [01:26:37] us on GB News today. can I ask you uh the [01:26:41] treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper has been talking about [01:26:44] plans for a growth and defense partnership with the [01:26:48] EU. can you explain what? means by that and [01:26:50] what effect do you think [01:26:51] it could have? yeah, this was the subject of my big speech yesterday morning as [01:26:55] well, since we left the European Union, one the things that we know is [01:26:59] that for example growth in British industries and investment in British industries has [01:27:03] plummeted between about 12 and 18%. international [01:27:07] trade is down between 80 and 100 billion a year and therefore the [01:27:11] government aren't getting all the tax advantages from all of that trades that we used [01:27:15] to do. the truth is the British economy is more or less flight lining, [01:27:18] productivity is... is isn't increasing, and we need to [01:27:22] do something, we need to do something for growth, because I think there's a very real chance, [01:27:26] and I know this for fact that people feel that they're going to be worse off tomorrow than they [01:27:30] are today, that their children aren't going to have the opportunities that they enjoyed, and [01:27:34] that's frankly leading to kind of doom loop of misery and [01:27:37] desperation, and that is precisely the kind of conditions in which the [01:27:41] politics of grievance, and you've already heard that Davy talking about that over the past couple of [01:27:44] days, can begin to take hold, the one thing that we need to do for our [01:27:48] country is engender growth and we have to acknowledge after [01:27:52] 10 years since the Brexit vote, the one thing that we can do is to improve our [01:27:56] trading relations with brilliant with with Europe. As I said yesterday in [01:28:00] my speech, geography matters, gravity matters when it comes to [01:28:04] trade, you trade more with the people closes to you, then you can do with countries on [01:28:08] the other side the world, and that's a trend that's increasing an era of [01:28:11] globalization rather than decreasing. So if we want to pull the lever on [01:28:15] economic growth in the UK, we need to re-improve our [01:28:18] relationship with Europe and that also. comes to defense as well, because we are going [01:28:22] to be investing lots of money in new armaments and [01:28:26] on on our defense industry over the next couple of years, so [01:28:29] we need to do that efficiently and effectively, Europe needs to... improve its [01:28:33] defense capabilities and frankly working with Europe a coordinated [01:28:37] way so that all of our armed forces are better, not a single EU [01:28:41] army, but that all of our armed forces work better together, can procure [01:28:44] better is the very best thing that we can do for our armed forces, but also for our [01:28:48] economy. very worrying times with all the uh noises coming out of [01:28:52] Russia certainly, but I mean uh, we only left the European Union at [01:28:56] in 2020, wasn't it? I mean, basically we've had a [01:29:00] pretty stagnant economy since the financial crisis. "and actually the rest of [01:29:04] Europe isn't doing well either, there's plenty of stagnant [01:29:07] economies, it's no silver bullet, [01:29:10] it it no, is no civil bullet, and so much of this isn't actually about Brexit, it's not about the [01:29:14] European Union Union, it's about who we are as a country, and what we [01:29:18] know is we're entering increasingly geopolitical, geopolitically [01:29:21] turbulent times, we do have war in Europe, people are [01:29:25] genuinely concerned that that war could escalate still further, we have increasingly [01:29:29] unreliable ally in the United States, especially with..." Donald [01:29:32] Trump in the white house and that may very well continue if any of his acolytes get [01:29:36] into power afterwards. So we have decision to make. Where do we want Britain to [01:29:40] be placed in the midp point the 21st century? Is it kind of [01:29:44] bobbing off the North Atlantic? Not quite sure subject to the great the [01:29:48] powers the the whims the great powers or taking greater control [01:29:52] of ourselves. Now my contention would be that sovereignty isn't about the [01:29:56] theoretical ability to act. It's about actually being able to [01:30:00] do something ourselves. It's about. taking control and that actually [01:30:04] requires different way of thinking about sovereignty, it requires working collectively [01:30:08] and collaboratively on the big challenges that we face. [01:30:12] sovereignty was sold as we had to retreat from the world and that we that we controlled [01:30:15] everything ourselves, but I would ask your viewers, do they feel more [01:30:19] in control their lives today than they did in the year 2000 or they [01:30:23] did in 2016 or in 2012 or do they in fact feel more out of [01:30:27] control, was sovereignty misold to them as a concept in the [01:30:31] Brexit referendum? 'Well, one thing that was sold to people was take back control of [01:30:35] our borders, something that successive governments have patently failed to do [01:30:39] uh, just look at the numbers crossing the channel on small boats. We've got this [01:30:42] incredible situation in Piddington now of 1,200 [01:30:46] largely male uh asilumseakers being dumped a village of [01:30:50] 300, women there very, very worried for their [01:30:54] safety, they those are legitimate concerns, are they not? I [01:30:58] agree, they're entirely legitimate concerns and I would again ask the question, do people feel [01:31:02] more in'. control now than he did in 2016. I remember [01:31:06] Niger Faraj standing in front of poster saying let's let's leave the EU [01:31:09] and let's take back control of our borders. He linked those two things [01:31:13] together. I think what the last 10 years have shown is that those two things were never linked [01:31:17] at all, [01:31:17] that well Nigel Farash would say he wasn't in government, so other people have blown [01:31:21] up. Oh, he might very, he might very well say that, but he made the point that [01:31:25] that intrinsically if we leave [01:31:27] the EU, we will get back control of our borders, [01:31:29] and that's not the case, because this was always a story about... and how [01:31:33] we governed ourselves rather than our relationship with Europe, just as [01:31:37] Brexit was not the magic bullet for all of those challenges, so [01:31:41] going back into the EU isn't the magic bulletin in reverse, but [01:31:44] it would substantially improve things, and I do feel huge sympathy for the people [01:31:47] ofton. I know the MP for for Bister, Callan [01:31:51] Miller who has been campaigning tirelessly both in public and behind the scenes, [01:31:54] to get the MOD [01:31:56] and to get the homeoffice to rethink this plan, which is completely [01:31:59] excessive for [01:32:00] the for a community the size of 300. but what i'd say also to the people of [01:32:04] Pittington is that perhaps even though they've generated lots of noise with their [01:32:08] campaigning, some of which is frankly I think deeply negative and frank and [01:32:11] verging on racist, even though the people of Piddington aren't, but they've attracted in [01:32:15] some deeply dark elements, that might actually be in [01:32:19] the end counterproductive, because the more they force ministers to go on the [01:32:23] record and say no, this is the plan and we're sticking with it, the more difficult [01:32:27] it is for a government to then backtrack or think again, and I think [01:32:30] the work that Callum has been doing... quietly and diplomatically, I think [01:32:34] that's the right approach, so I would just caution that everyone needs to tone, [01:32:38] tone this down, because ultimately that might lead to the better solution for the people of [01:32:42] Piddington. Well, Andy Burnham says that the [01:32:46] burden of uh asylum seekers have got to be shared more fairly [01:32:50] through the country. The problem is though, isn't it that people are just sick of [01:32:54] seeing these people crossing the channel and they don't [01:32:57] want to take their share because they just want the to the government to do its job [01:33:00] and stop the boats, how would... liberal democrats do that? well, first of all, [01:33:04] I would say that boat crossings across the channel are substantially down [01:33:08] over the last five years and the past year we have far [01:33:12] fewer boat crossings than than any than any year in the past in the past [01:33:16] five, so things are moving in the right direction, but fundamentally you cannot [01:33:19] ultimately tackle this problem unless again you are willing to work collectively and [01:33:23] collaboratively with with Europe, because this is a European [01:33:26] migration crisis, people are not just arriving on the shores the UK [01:33:30] from elsewhere, they're coming of course through France. but perhaps they first applied for asylum [01:33:34] in southern Italy or in Greece, so unless we have [01:33:37] mechanism to collectively deal with this issue, [01:33:40] it will, there will always be economy for that illegal movement to people across the channel [01:33:44] and... That's what we are proposing, we're saying that we need to join the European Union's new [01:33:48] asylum scheme, because that will allow us to return people back to the [01:33:52] first port of entry and the first point of registration in in [01:33:56] Europe, and and it would then allow Europe as a whole, including the [01:34:00] UK, to disperse people through through the whole of Europe, [01:34:04] and we of course we need to take our fair share of asylum seekers, we're signaties to the [01:34:08] 1951 refugee convention, but it fundamentally undermines [01:34:11] the economic model that is leading to the small boats for. [01:34:15] and i think that has [01:34:16] to be a good thing, and if people genuinely want small boats to stop, [01:34:19] then that is the way to do it. well, under [01:34:23] the dublin agreement uh, we did have that right, didn't we? uh, before [01:34:27] brexit, but we actually didn't send back very many people at all, and [01:34:31] the the theory that people have to uh seek asylum in the first [01:34:35] safe country they come to doesn't seem in practice work terribly [01:34:39] well in Europe. pinkerton really appreciate you talking to us this [01:34:42] lunchtime on GB News. thank you so much. in the studio Dawn, thank [01:34:46] you so much Katherine, just quickly uh viewers have been getting in touch and Emily has got [01:34:50] in touch, she says uh, Al Pinkton is my local MP, [01:34:54] he's so annoying, flauncing around in his range rover, thinking he's a big cheese, don't [01:34:58] tell him that though, obviously, but that's one of his constituents there, [01:35:02] and your hair and makeup is also getting much love, much love, [01:35:05] Catherine, much love from the field, thank you so much Katherine Forster in [01:35:09] writing at the Libdem Conference for us, okay now there's lots more coming up [01:35:13] today's show uh Britain. should face legal action from Caribbean [01:35:17] nations demanding slavy reparation, yeah, we've heard it before, but [01:35:21] this time they're going to make it legal, they are thinking of [01:35:25] suing us because we are racist, from [01:35:27] what i can work out, the r over historical injustice is [01:35:31] escalating, but should you and i, british [01:35:35] tax payers pay the bill for something that happened way, way way before we [01:35:39] were born. all of that and much more to come, i'm done and this is she [01:35:43] news, britain's news channel, i'll see [01:35:44] you soon. Okay, now a Caribbean nations are [01:41:06] reportedly considering legal action, now they've already demanded the money, but now they're [01:41:10] considering legal action against Britain a bid to secure [01:41:14] slavery reparations, that's under international racial [01:41:17] discrimination laws. The prime minister of Barbados, Mia [01:41:20] Motley, that's her there, is hosting a conference to discuss strategies [01:41:24] for obtaining a compensation. comes ahead of November's [01:41:28] Commonwealth Summit where Caribbean leaders are expected to push the [01:41:32] issue of reparations with the king who is expected to attend uh joining me [01:41:36] now is your favorite immigration lawyer and mine Sharb Khan [01:41:40] uh Sharb good to see you thank you so much for joining us right so [01:41:43] basically the long and short of this is that we're going to be [01:41:47] sued now it's going legal so we have to cough up [01:41:51] reperations ah yes i mean that [01:41:55] does seem to be the um [01:41:57] the the the cracks of what they're saying, mean obviously mean it's already [01:42:00] been iknow century or [01:42:04] more um [01:42:04] you know and we've been hearing about this for decades now [01:42:06] but obviously now they're going legal we have international courts we have treaties we have international laws and so [01:42:10] obviously [01:42:11] mean i'm sure it's going to be [01:42:12] a long long time if ever you know when it's actually before a [01:42:16] court and judges sitting there deciding it but yeah that does seem to be i think [01:42:20] they you know they've decided that diplomacy negotiation only go so [01:42:23] far and so now is that time that they think that you know if they actually are going to [01:42:27] have any reparations before it's too late then now is the time [01:42:31] and and legally can they do that? that's the thing, I [01:42:35] mean obviously it is an unprecedented case and that is something that would [01:42:39] remains to be seen what the actual decision you know comes out to be, but [01:42:43] obviously I mean I would say that just taking it as an [01:42:45] anti-savery case probably [01:42:49] not, there's obviously all sorts of legal reasons and practical reasons [01:42:53] for that, but essentially just because [01:42:55] you know obviously almost all the people... or definitely all [01:42:59] the people involved on on both sides or all sides are no longer [01:43:03] alive and though therefore you how do you prove it [01:43:05] you know who the slave owners were who the slaves were you know how each them was [01:43:09] treated you know I mean how how each family has suffered because of [01:43:13] that obviously from evidential point of view that's almost impossible to prove now so I [01:43:17] think and obviously that's the reason as well that they have been trying to resolve it through talks and [01:43:21] just [01:43:21] you know trying to convince their former slave owners or their masters or [01:43:25] the colonizers just to take the... reasonable and fair [01:43:29] view and just help them through things, but obviously that's having [01:43:32] failed, so now they're going to be trying different avenues and that's the legal [01:43:36] avenue, so like we saw the latest one seems to be that they might [01:43:40] be taking the international covenant or the international treaty that deals with [01:43:43] anti-racism laws, so that's what it's going to be, so so [01:43:47] that's how it's going to be assessed now, not necessarily just purely as a slavery case, but the point [01:43:51] is, in this case obviously it's the white colonizers against the black [01:43:55] slaves, but obviously I mean you know... that that's you know a [01:43:59] unique position obviously you know there were slave owners of all colors and slaves [01:44:03] of all colors and but in this case the Caribbean obviously [01:44:07] members the commonwealth they were formally colonized by British, [01:44:11] in fact the king himself, the king is still king of Jamaica, and [01:44:15] that [01:44:15] you know obviously all sorts of anomalies would [01:44:17] arise, because of those positions like that, so for [01:44:21] instance, I think it was the government of Jamaica few months ago [01:44:24] that um sort to bring this to the privy council, so again the [01:44:28] privy council [01:44:30] or basically their Supreme Court in a way or their highest is in fact basically British [01:44:34] judges still and their head of state and their king is still King Charles [01:44:38] the 3rd and so a way they were... basicallying asking king Charles [01:44:42] II to bring the case against Britain and so obviously I [01:44:46] mean [01:44:46] you know there is lot that has to be you know that we will have to [01:44:49] resolve before this case actually gets to court. I i was just say does [01:44:53] it open just quickly and briefly shop does it open the you know if that that coult [01:44:57] case was successful does it open the [01:45:01] the the door for all of us to go to court about slavery [01:45:05] in the past [01:45:06] I mean for example I mean sort of like you know the Vikings could I [01:45:10] take Denmark to court basically. I, I, I [01:45:14] mean, I, I, I guess, I mean, obviously it depends on you, again, like I was saying, what we can prove, and but [01:45:18] obviously I mean, I think it might be slightly more difficult for Britain or British people [01:45:21] or definitely Britain as state to now say that they continue to suffer [01:45:25] because of those those atrocities [01:45:29] really, whereas I think the Caribbean and their stance is [01:45:33] that firstly it's more recent, but secondly, because the way that they still treated and what's [01:45:37] been happening, even in recent history that... [01:45:40] lots that more slavery isn't something that just happened in the past has gone away, the aftermath, the [01:45:43] effects, they are still being felt by those people today. [01:45:47] okay, sharb, always good to talk to you, thank you so much as immigration lawyer shob khan [01:45:51] there, thank you, mean obviously it goes without saying and we have to keep saying [01:45:55] it that britain abolished slavery in 1834 and [01:45:59] we did an awful lot for ending the transatlantic slave trade, but whether that defense will [01:46:03] stand up a court or law, who knows it's gone mad, the whole world gone mad. okay, i'm [01:46:07] doing news, need coming [01:46:08] there's up [01:46:08] some today's stub show, This isn't mad, this is lovely. Those who buy one contribute to the Royal British [01:51:13] Legion's largest annual fundraising campaign. Bye. important for us to support those, those [01:51:25] that are serving and those that have served, of course those guys and ladies have [01:51:29] gone out and they have given the all for us [01:51:32] and so it is great for us to be able to just give that b little [01:51:36] bit back to them to say thank you, that's why we wear our puppy on [01:51:40] rememberance sunday, isn't it absolutely glorious when you're looking around and [01:51:44] seeing everyone wearing their paper poppy, my first [01:51:47] medal was the blue one which was for the [01:51:51] united nations service in Cyprus. On the first tour there we lost two soldiers killed and one [01:52:16] wounded on the first patrol we did. And I think about that all the [01:52:20] time. The British Army in the... was for the 30 years lost [01:52:24] 1441 people, but it was a traumatic [01:52:28] time for the soldiers and it was for the wives as well, the wives [01:52:32] suffered just as much as we did. the [01:52:36] fundraiser is vital part of rememberance and support [01:52:39] serving personnel, veterans and their families. we [01:52:43] all like to try to remember what's gone in the past, and our [01:52:47] senataf here has got lots of names on from [01:52:50] Iraq and Afghanistan, and northern Ireland and [01:52:54] so on, every year around 60,000 volunteers give up [01:52:58] their time nationwide to gather donations. Hello there, good afternoon, welcome to your [01:54:03] GB news weather update from the Met Office. It should be quite a fine end to [01:54:07] the day for many of us. There a change coming through tonight in the north where [01:54:11] we'll eventually see more rain coming through, but under clearer skies it will be [01:54:15] turning a bit chillier than of late. For the time being though, high pressure [01:54:18] continues to build across the southwest, meaning it should be quite a fine to [01:54:22] the day, plenty of clear skies, so eventually across the north we'll start to see more [01:54:26] cloud push through towards the northwest, and eventually through the early hours the [01:54:30] morning, we'll see rain progress through here, eventually into northern island, parts [01:54:34] of... and northwest England, to the south of this though, plenty [01:54:38] of clear skies, so turning a bit chillier here, rural areas under the clearer [01:54:42] skies could drop down to around 2 to 4°grees celsius, so quite a chilly [01:54:46] start by the time we reach Monday morning for some, but [01:54:49] it is eventually going to start to turn a bit warmer, a bit muggier, particularly across the [01:54:53] north where we'll see some clouds, some rain, this could turn quite persistent across the [01:54:57] hills of Scotland, also quite cloudy and damp start across northern [01:55:01] Island, northern England we'll see some patchy cloud and possibly someone [01:55:05] night outbs of rain towards the far northwest, elsewhere across England and [01:55:08] Wales though, it should be quite a bright start to the day, a little bit chilly, some [01:55:12] patchy fog in places, though this should soon clear through the course the morning and [01:55:16] remaining quite dry and settled here with some sunshine, towards the north [01:55:20] though, different story remaining quite cloudy with some rain and drizzle, this quite [01:55:24] persistent around western hills through the course the day, [01:55:27] much lighter winds and feeling warm in the sunshine once again, but return of that [01:55:31] muggy feel, temperatures pushing into the mid-20s for many. areas, [01:55:35] including eastern areas of Scotland where they might start to see some breaks in the cloud [01:55:39] later on into the day. now through Monday night, there's not [01:55:43] much change, there's still this north south split in the weather, so plenty of cloud [01:55:47] towards the north, some rain and drizzle, but some clearer skies towards the [01:55:50] south. we'll still see plenty of fine weather into next week, though some rain and [01:55:54] showers across the north at times and temperatures eventually returning to more average for this [01:55:58] point the year. today [01:56:01] clouds overhead, turtals and [01:56:05] within Box Solar sponsors the weather on [01:56:08] GB [01:56:09] News.
