[00:14:39] think you'd never fall for an online scam? Well, it can happen to [00:14:42] anyone. This businessman lost $400,000 to an AI [00:14:46] driven crypto scam. I still wake up occasionally in the middle of the [00:14:49] night with anxiety where it just all of a sudden hits me. AI [00:14:53] assisted scams are on the rise according to crime researchers [00:14:57] and the FBI, criminal networks use AI to work across [00:15:00] borders and languages, reaching more victims than ever before. [00:15:04] Here's what you can learn from Chris's story: I [00:15:07] met Alizer through Facebook, um, [00:15:10] November 2024, [00:15:13] um, I got a friend request, they began talking, eventually [00:15:17] Eliza brought up crypto investments and how much money she made with it, they [00:15:21] even had a video call. Eliza looked real, Chris decided [00:15:25] to invest. This was a way for me to grow [00:15:28] my retirement fund. I had no plans to stay in it for very [00:15:32] long. I was planning to [00:16:15] retire in like another three or four years, [00:16:18] that unless something changes, that's not going to happen, [00:16:22] which is, to say it's discouraging is probably a gross [00:16:26] understatement. [00:16:28] This isn't an isolated case, scammers around the world [00:16:31] use the same playbook, create a fake identity, build trust, [00:16:35] convince someone to invest. then disappear. There are [00:16:39] entire scam factories, often based in Southeast Asia. They are known to [00:16:43] force human trafficked victims to work in teams to scam people [00:16:46] worldwide. Experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of trafficked [00:16:49] victims are involved in such operations, and technology [00:16:53] is supercharging this. AI can [00:16:56] help criminals write convincing messages in many languages. [00:16:59] It can create realistic images, it can clone voices and it makes [00:17:03] fake identities much harder to detect. As large language [00:17:06] models, for example, have gotten better and better, you're suddenly [00:17:10] globalizing the audience you can communicate with. Some scam [00:17:14] factories use specialized software that incorporates leading AI models to [00:17:18] automate and scale their operations. A recent [00:17:20] investigation found OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's [00:17:24] Gemini to be the most used tools, but models from Europe and [00:17:27] China were also used. Internet access is another key part of the [00:17:31] operation. Starlink is the number one internet service provider in [00:17:34] Myanmar where many scam factories are based.
