[00:25:26] remediation, further spread and threat to human health are imminent. Citizens

[00:26:45] the results of the environmental protection assessment in the case
[00:26:49] of illegal waste disposal in Gospić, in which the married
[00:26:52] couple Šincek is suspected. The published findings confirm that the area
[00:26:56] of the industrial complex is significantly polluted, the finding that was
[00:27:00] published is indeed concerning. There is
[00:27:02] great damage to the environment, but also a danger to people.
[00:27:06] Urgent remediation is needed. Residents who have long
[00:27:09] warned that their health is endangered, are bitter, but not
[00:27:13] surprised, they have only one question, and what
[00:27:16] now.
[00:27:19] A year and a half after the affair with illegal medical
[00:27:22] waste disposal was revealed, USKOK published the results of the assessment
[00:27:25] on as many as 365 pages. The analyses
[00:27:29] showed extremely elevated concentrations of substances such
[00:27:33] as copper, zinc, lead and antimony. The conclusion
[00:27:36] of the assessment is that it is a locally significant progressive
[00:27:40] pollution that has already caused permanent changes in
[00:27:42] the environment. It is warned that without remediation, the landfill
[00:27:46] will remain a permanent source of pollution with possible consequences for the environment
[00:27:50] and human health. For residents living near
[00:27:53] the landfill, fear has now received official confirmation.
[00:27:57] I am extremely afraid, primarily for my children and for all the children
[00:28:01] of this city, because they did not deserve for something
[00:28:04] to happen, for them to die in agony, for their parents
[00:28:08] to watch their suffering or for something to happen to their parents,
[00:28:12] that these children live without us, I think we live
[00:28:15] honestly, we try, we did not deserve this at all, because
[00:28:19] I also said, this was not
[00:28:23] that you couldn't influence, this is a human act, so a man
[00:28:26] sold our lives, our children's
[00:28:30] lives, our future, the future
[00:28:34] of the image, for some miserable money. The assessment shows
[00:28:37] that the problem did not remain only at the place where the waste
[00:28:40] was buried. In groundwater downstream from the landfill, PFAS compounds
[00:28:44] known as eternal chemicals were found. While in water
[00:28:47] from the public water supply system, exceedances
[00:28:50] of permitted values have not yet been determined,
[00:28:53] but citizens fear that the consequences of pollution will not remain
[00:28:56] limited to this location. The water is what
[00:29:00] it is, not all of us can afford to buy it, me and my family, we
[00:29:03] still drink it, eventually sometimes we treat ourselves,
[00:29:07] we buy water and so on, but it's not just water, where's
[00:29:11] the garden, where's the vegetable garden, where is the,
[00:29:14] so our crops, where is everything, we water all of that with this same
[00:29:18] water, and so every one of those
[00:29:21] products, every one of those fruits or vegetables, we again
[00:29:24] consume it, the published findings did not surprise
[00:29:28] the mayor of Gospić, but he says that remediation should
[00:29:32] be approached as soon as possible, which is good, no harmful
[00:29:35] compounds were found upstream, which means, I was talking about that, that
[00:29:39] the people of Gospić drink clean water, downstream
[00:29:42] certain concentrations of harmful
[00:29:45] compounds were found, but the report says it did not have
[00:29:48] an impact on human health because that water
[00:29:52] used in the public water supply is not used for
[00:29:56] drinking. This is not only a problem for Gospić, this is also a problem for all surrounding
[00:30:00] places and for our Senj and for Otočac. We cannot be
[00:30:03] happy because it goes downstream and someone else will suffer, so we are equally
[00:30:07] concerned for all residents of Lika. The citizens' initiative Gospić
[00:30:11] Naš Dom has been warning about this case for years, and they also organized
[00:30:15] a protest and wonder how it is possible that no one has
[00:30:18] reacted yet. It is sad actually that to this day, and
[00:30:22] already tomorrow all public health bodies in
[00:30:25] the Republic of Croatia, from the Ministry of Health to the Andrija Štampar Institute
[00:30:28] of Public Health and all of them, they must give
[00:30:32] the citizens of Gospić and Lika guidelines on how to act
[00:30:35] on these conclusions from the findings of the opinion, it is sad that
[00:30:39] a year and a half after the affair was discovered, there has been no
[00:30:42] synergy of all state bodies to
[00:30:45] protect their citizens, that is their duty, they receive
[00:30:49] a salary for that, urgent remediation, urgent public
[00:30:52] health instructions to the citizens of Gospić and Lika on how to
[00:30:56] behave, not only Lika.
