Hassan Piker [00:01:42] of of streams live for up to 10 [00:01:43] me hours a day from his home in Los Angeles, there's other opportunities to do [00:01:47] phone banking uh leading into election [00:02:00] "the 35-year-old has become [00:02:02] in a [00:02:02] of symbol [00:02:02] of the far left insurgency in the democratic party, all right, [00:02:06] we're [00:02:06] of here, one that they say will lose general elections and hurt [00:02:10] democrats chances of taking over the senate in the mid-terms. [00:02:14] our community will be there every step [00:02:16] of the way. James Carvel says, this is all [00:02:20] going implode at the general [00:02:22] in election. Yeah, as opposed to [00:02:27] of previous neoliberal democratic candidacies that have been..." spectacular [00:02:30] successes so far uh, Hillary Rodam Clinton in [00:02:34] 2016 and Comela Harris in 2024. I don't [00:02:38] think I'm like exceptionally good at [00:02:41] prostlatizing the gospel of socialism necessarily. I think there [00:02:45] are a lot of people who are just like, this is not working. Cause of Living crisis is [00:02:49] completely out of control, democrats haven't done anything about it, Republicans haven't done [00:02:52] anything about it, there has to be [00:02:54] a different [00:02:55] alternative. [00:03:00] 'fiker became issue himself in the Democratic Party when [00:03:04] he first campaigned with Abdul El Sayed who was running in the Michigan [00:03:08] Democratic primary for US [00:03:09] senate. That's a [00:03:13] state that Trump won and Abdullah Saied is my [00:03:17] guy. There was a lot of controversy surrounding my affiliation with [00:03:21] him and [00:03:22] there was a month of media coverage and in the aftermath of that [00:03:26] polls came out and it showed that Abdul had actually is in [00:03:30] the top, he was in third place before that happened, and he was in first place after it [00:03:34] happened. what Josh and I are trying to do in [00:03:37] of putting this resolution forward is to say enough. the house [00:03:41] resolution sponsored by congressman Gottheimer and Lawler [00:03:44] details some of Piker's controversial statements. with [00:03:48] people like Owens and Piker, and they're not welcome in our districts and and none of [00:03:52] this language [00:03:53] and is acceptable either. pairing itself while he has apologized for some [00:03:57] of his comments and has said others were... out a context, [00:04:01] he has continued to praise [00:04:02] Hamas. You seen [00:04:06] this? Yes, I have. A house [00:04:09] resolution. That's never going to get [00:04:13] passed too. Hassan Piker, a prominent online streamer has [00:04:16] often used anti-semitic rhetoric, including [00:04:20] expressing support for [00:04:22] me Hamas, designated foreign terrorist organization. Why [00:04:26] do you express support from Hamas? Well, I wouldn't say I [00:04:30] sport [00:04:30] of for uh all of [00:04:32] of Hamas's actions or anything, I do say that the Palestinian [00:04:35] resistance largely does have an [00:04:38] internationally recognized right to resist, do they violate that sometimes [00:04:42] with warcims? absolutely, [00:04:44] of and hamas certainly has as well, but [00:04:46] of at the end [00:04:46] of the day Palestinians do have a right to resist militarily. when you say [00:04:50] Hamas is a thousand times better, do you actually mean that or [00:04:54] is that [00:04:54] a rhetorical move or like a solidarity signal? like what? I [00:04:58] mean it's all [00:04:59] of the above uh... I do mean it, I think it's [00:05:01] a retorical move because it frustrates lot of people, I've also said I'm a harm reduction voter, I'm [00:05:05] a lesser evil voter, and therefore I would vote for Hamas over Israel every single [00:05:09] time, if you say you're voting for Hamas, you're voting for [00:05:12] limited rights for women, [00:05:16] you're voting for homophobia, but but [00:05:20] like this is right, like when you say you're voting for Hamas, it's not [00:05:24] an endorsement their domestic policies, but I don't think anyone actually [00:05:28] cares about their domestic b is, I certainly don't, every Palestinian at [00:05:32] the end [00:05:32] the day, regardless their disagreements with Hamas, will always say [00:05:36] that Israel is still, the Israeli occupation is the greatest problem [00:05:40] that they're facing, the most existential problem that they're facing, can you understand when [00:05:44] when when just the [00:05:47] regular American? of course, [00:05:50] that's the reason [00:05:50] when they see all this, well that's the purpose of that document, the purpose of that document [00:05:54] is not to be like, this guy is spent the last 13 years combatting far [00:05:58] right anti-semitism and far right radicalization and still continues to [00:06:02] do so to this day, as someone who's an anti-fascist, i'm going to [00:06:05] oppose zionism which is fascist ideology, these guys can't [00:06:09] defend that, so they have to attack its prominent critic. "I [00:06:13] will always always call out anti-semitism. [00:06:17] It's gross, it's immoral, it is hate crime. There is [00:06:21] no space for anti-semitism. Hang around the [00:06:25] progressive left for any amount of time, and you likely [00:06:28] hear about Apac. I'm speaking about apac, apac funding. What [00:06:32] makes apac unique is that they're funded by billionaires. [00:06:36] Apac, the American Israel public affairs committee, is an American [00:06:40] lobbing group that advocates for. Israel policies in [00:06:44] Washington DC. In the United States, our support [00:06:48] for Israel is bipartisan, and that is how it should stay. For [00:06:51] decades, politicians on both sides the isle have engaged with [00:06:55] Apac and spoken its annual conference in [00:06:58] Washington. Gathering in [00:07:02] history, and I feel like I am among [00:07:05] family. In Michigan, the group has [00:07:08] spent upwards of 30 million against Senate candidate. [00:07:13] who has been critical the Israeli government and [00:07:16] their actions in Gaza, but in parts the Democratic [00:07:20] Party, APAC is now deeply [00:07:23] unpopular. Now is the time of monsters. [00:07:27] These monsters take many forms in APAC, for whom the only [00:07:30] thing more frightening than democracy being allowed to run its course is an end to [00:07:34] genocide in Netanyahu's wars. Like other [00:07:38] groups, they fund campaign supporting and opposing candidates. [00:07:42] Critics of politicians like Mam Dani say that the singling out of [00:07:46] Apac is anti-semitic. Something has happened when elected [00:07:50] officials like our mayor in this city, gas [00:07:54] lights Jews, calling apec and the people who support it [00:07:57] monsters. Corey Bush lost her seat in Congress [00:08:01] in 2024. She blames [00:08:04] Apac. It was a coordinated effort because I [00:08:08] was speaking about keeping our money here in this country and not bombing babies. [00:08:12] in another country, another anti-Israel member of congress, Corey [00:08:16] Bush, more than $7 million was spent to oppose Bush in [00:08:20] 2024, a historically high amount for a [00:08:23] congressional primary race. So-called squad member faced [00:08:27] a fierce primary challenge from Democratic opponent, Wesley Bell. [00:08:31] That's after his campaigns on influx of cash from the Israel allig [00:08:35] Super Pack, APAC. The ads never said Israel, [00:08:38] Palestine, Gaza, the ads said Cory is... not [00:08:42] a good democrat. Bush was good at getting headlines, but [00:08:46] bad at actually accomplishing anything. More than 70% the spending [00:08:50] against her was by a super pack affiliated with [00:08:53] APAC. Now Bush is running to win her all [00:08:57] seat back with support from people like piker. The [00:09:01] second most expensive congressional primary. That's [00:09:05] what it took for Israel to subvert the [00:09:08] democratic process. Well, an activist like Piker puts the issue of. [00:09:12] israel front and center in his campaigning, David Hogg's message [00:09:16] is squarely focused on getting dark special interest [00:09:20] money out of politics, there is no way of taking [00:09:24] corporate money and just not being in bed with those special interests right, [00:09:28] and rejecting the influence of apac. Bus, he too brings up [00:09:31] Apac. Let tell you [00:09:35] story, when I first started working in DC, when I went from working on the [00:09:39] outside of politics in the advocacy world to then working. on the [00:09:42] inside, one the first things that I was told when I got here is do not talk about [00:09:46] apac, do not mention them, do [00:09:50] not think about them, don't dare go against them, and the thing that was [00:09:54] striking to me about that was how early similar that [00:09:58] sounded to what I remember hearing about the NRA after [00:10:00] Parksland, where people said to me, they're too [00:10:04] powerful, you guys are just a bunch of kids, what happened at your high school is [00:10:07] horrible, but you don't understand, this is the NRA, nobody's ever going to [00:10:11] take them on, we did and we won and we made that organization go from [00:10:15] standing for the national rifle association to standing for not relevant [00:10:19] anymore. yeah, i think lot of people [00:10:22] watching this to hear you. a parkland [00:10:26] survivor uh talk about [00:10:30] apac uh in the same [00:10:32] re will [00:10:35] be surprising, [00:10:39] it shouldn't be, both are getting kids [00:10:43] killed, and i don't [00:10:47] draw a line between whether it's kids in parkland, kids [00:10:51] any street in america any community or if it's kids in palestine. [00:10:55] "It's not okay. When you first got here to DC and you were [00:10:59] told whatever you do, don't talk about [00:11:02] Apac, don't come after Apac, big [00:11:06] farmer puts a lot of money into this town, big [00:11:09] oil, whatever. Why do you think it was [00:11:13] A-Pac, you were told to stay quiet about more so than anything else? There [00:11:17] are few groups that had the winning streak that Apack had, that's the reality. What people [00:11:21] fear more than anything are people that they perceive to be strong winners." [00:11:25] that can be decisive in elections. Apac did not make [00:11:29] anyone available for an interview for this program. In a statement [00:11:33] apac called hog's comments despicable and [00:11:35] disgusting. Apac said it is proud to [00:11:39] support quote principal democrats to share our commitment to a [00:11:43] partnership that is integral to America's national security. It [00:11:47] also pointed out that many democrats it supports are winning their [00:11:50] primaries. Boss, what does all of this [00:11:54] mean? [00:11:57] for the midterms, moderate democrats are the only [00:12:00] ones who have delivered the house and the white [00:12:04] house since Trump came on [00:12:06] the scene in 2015, but in the Trump era, [00:12:10] those centrest democrats have lost the white house [00:12:13] twice and only one at [00:12:19] is the most popular Israel will be going forward, tomorrow [00:12:23] Israel will be less popular than today and yesterday [00:12:26] Israel was more popular than it was today. it's [00:12:30] done. [00:12:42] if we really are going to take a rising authoritarian right, that is [00:12:46] going to be about having as many people as part of that movement as possible [00:12:49] even if that makes you uncomfortable. [00:13:04] to talk everyone, including each other. John, you [00:13:08] interviewed a San Piker, right? You heard about [00:13:10] that? You got a lot of shit [00:13:13] even for talking to him. Clearly you don't buy into the [00:13:17] idea that somebody like Assan Piker should not be given a [00:13:21] platform. How dare you platform someone with huge platform? Right, yeah. [00:13:25] "whether you like this or not, um, Hasan has lot of people who [00:13:29] listen to him. I don't want to start going down the path uh, even as we [00:13:33] headed to 2028, where I say, all right, if you if you're not with me on this [00:13:36] issue, I don't want to listen to you. We had interviewed him [00:13:39] before, um, and it wasn't a big deal [00:13:42] before. I think it's sort of what we [00:13:46] started this to do, which was to have conversations with people who are involved in politics [00:13:50] and let the audience decide um, what to make of that. I think the [00:13:53] Democratic party's got to move awa." from this dumb debate about platforming, let [00:13:57] reasonable adults kind of sort out what they think about it. mostly, I [00:14:01] think it did enormous harm to [00:14:02] the democratic party, it's a democratic candidates that we refuse to go [00:14:06] on other people's shows a purity test. the roof is [00:14:10] collapsing on the democratic party establishment tonight. with insurgent [00:14:14] campaigns housing long-term incumbent democrats, this [00:14:17] primary face off is what some are calling the democrat civil [00:14:21] war. the growing divide over Israel is reshaping. on [00:14:25] the left, democratic socialists in New York are [00:14:29] crazy, like outright, really [00:14:31] crazy. [00:14:34] it was not the end, it was the [00:14:36] beginning. both sides claim their candidates [00:14:40] will be more electible in November. i want to talk about this idea of [00:14:44] electibility. let me be clear. the [00:14:48] last people who have any right to lecture us about [00:14:51] electability are the establishment who lost the d [00:14:58] is the Democrat party having its its tea party movement to [00:15:01] move to to the left? even beyond Trump and before Trump inequality in [00:15:05] this country was um expanding a rapid [00:15:09] clip and there's a lot of people in both parties and across all ideologies [00:15:13] who are really pissed off about it and we need candidates [00:15:17] who are not necessarily tied to the establishment but who are outsiders [00:15:20] whether they're to the left or the center left who are going to uh [00:15:25] try to challenge the status quo? i think there's a debate about [00:15:28] what voters want and what makes a candidate electible, is it because [00:15:32] you're populist, you're relentlessly focused on economic issues, you're maybe not [00:15:36] a lawyer or... [00:15:38] a traditional politician, but you're someone new that feels more authentic, [00:15:41] or there's others who think like, no, actually, what we need is to send [00:15:45] down some the edges, like walk back some the more extreme [00:15:49] or furtest left positions the party has taken and run more moderate [00:15:53] candidates. the battle for the future the democratic party and the republican [00:15:56] party is not going to play out like it used to. money out of [00:16:00] politics, money in your pocket and medicare for all, a [00:16:04] battle that will help set the stage for the 2028 president. the [00:16:07] primaries, michiganers need someone who stays focused through the noise [00:16:11] and gets the job done, issues like affordability, [00:16:15] health, care, corporate influence, and of course [00:16:18] Israel will play a big role. more than half of house democrats [00:16:22] voted to end US military funding for Israel. this is [00:16:26] huge jump in numbers. this is going to continue to be a [00:16:29] pression issue and something that democrats cannot [00:16:33] ignore. the big question for both wings the party is whether they can [00:16:36] come together. after their primaries and back their party's [00:16:39] nominees. i have one simple [00:16:42] philosophy: winning is everything [00:16:46] stupid. the burden is on the left to show why their [00:16:49] toxic politics could work anywhere outside of blue places and [00:16:53] today they have literally failed in that [00:16:57] test. this is a country that belongs to the [00:17:00] working families of america and not just a [00:17:04] handful of billionaires. [00:17:08] "for too long we've had cowards in our government that have been pushed [00:17:11] around by the government of Israel, that have been pushed around by the [00:17:15] super pack spending, we are an environment where people are so sick and [00:17:19] tired the status quo, that's the bigger story here, david hogg [00:17:23] says ultimately he will support all democratic candidates as they go [00:17:27] against republicans, but there was one person, i wasn't [00:17:31] so sure about, will you endorse the [00:17:34] 2028 candidates if they are?" [00:17:38] pro Israel a way that you don't like, if you ultimately are [00:17:42] about defeating fascism in this country as you describe it, [00:17:46] surely shouldn't you get on board with whoever the main candidate is? luckily [00:17:50] I don't think I'm going to have to make that calculation at all, because there [00:17:53] is 0% chance that whoever the elected democrat is [00:17:57] that wins the primary will be pro Israel any way shot [00:18:01] perform, you'll [00:18:02] see. [00:25:33] very far from the edge the girond wildfire, some the bordeau [00:25:36] region's finest grapes are ripening, the owner of [00:25:40] chateau Smith Olafit says they were lucky, the flames [00:25:44] were 18 km away and the smoke never made it here, [00:25:48] and looking at these grapes, [00:25:49] it is simply that the the smell came to you for a couple of times, a couple of [00:25:53] hours, you didn't get the smoke, we're far from the fires and the grapes are such that they are [00:25:57] impermable at this point anyway, totally because you see if you [00:26:01] touch them it's very hard. and [00:26:03] we we didn't we have maybe two hours of bad [00:26:07] smell, not not ashes, nothing, so it's [00:26:11] perfect. the vineyards here go back to the 14th [00:26:14] century, from the vantage point the chat's tower, florence [00:26:18] catiar explains that the real challenge this year has been protecting her [00:26:22] organically grown grapes from the summer's extreme heat. oh, [00:26:29] you get a glimpse of what's at stake. they call this, [00:26:32] paradise where the property's most ancient and expensive wines are [00:26:36] kept. this is very special piece and in fact [00:26:40] you can have you you can see here all the bottle the [00:26:44] oldest we have here [00:26:47] it is 1878 as we taste [00:26:50] 2016 yan lo says this year's [00:26:54] vintage will be unharmed by the fires but redrawn by the [00:26:58] heat. i try to make the best wine we [00:27:02] can. make for each vintage, so it's [00:27:05] reinvention, exactly. Unlike recent vintages affected [00:27:09] by wildfires in Napa, those the Bordeaux region appear to have [00:27:13] emerged relatively unscated. It looks as though the [00:27:16] problems of smoke taint, which is the biggest fear, [00:27:20] um, there may be some, but there won't be very much by the sound of it, [00:27:24] but it certainly won't be anything like what we saw in California in [00:27:27] 2020, for example. Leaving now just the question of what sort of [00:27:31] vintage such a... hot and dry summer will yield, even now that the [00:27:35] fires appear to have been tamed.
