[00:11:48] good diversification that
[00:11:52] can start? We must take into account that... electricity
[00:11:55] consumption is rising, a large number of air conditioners are being massively
[00:11:59] installed today, heat pumps are being installed, and everything
[00:12:02] that has an electric motor drive,
[00:12:06] that affects the increase in electricity
[00:12:09] consumption, which needs to be met with new
[00:12:12] production, and for those reasons there will be these

[00:15:11] state marine mammal back in 1975,
[00:15:14] but in the last few years, manities in Florida's
[00:15:17] Indian river lagoon have been dying off, and we asked CNN's Randy
[00:15:21] K to take a closer look at what exactly is going on. We want to warn you that... Some of

[00:15:28] We're heading out on Florida's Indian River lagoon, which
[00:15:32] stretches from Palmbeach County to Daytona Beach. The lagoon is where
[00:15:36] Florida Manities come for. warm water, but in recent years, the
[00:15:39] northern end of the lagoon has been a death trap for them. all these homes
[00:15:43] along the lagoon that are on septic tanks are slowly leaking
[00:15:47] literally uh tons of nitrogen and phosphorus into the system. marine
[00:15:50] biologist Peter Burelli has studied manities for decades. he says
[00:15:54] those pollutants are being released by septic tanks and water treatment
[00:15:58] facilities along the lagoon and are fueling algee growth in the
[00:16:02] water, which is causing the manity's main food source, sea
[00:16:05] grass to die. so this is:
[00:16:08] is reducing light down to the sea grasses, essentially smothering
[00:16:11] them and killing them. he says manites need to eat nearly
[00:16:15] 100 pounds of vegetation a day. between december
[00:16:18] 2020 and April 2022, more than
[00:16:21] 1200 manites died of starvation, most of them
[00:16:25] here in the northern part of the Indian river lagoon. just a couple of
[00:16:28] decades ago, the water in this Indian river lagoon was crystal clear,
[00:16:32] you could easily see down to the bottom. now it's dark and
[00:16:35] murky and polluted with chemicals. an algae, with their sea grass
[00:16:39] gone, the Manites had little choice but eat the algae that killed it, which
[00:16:43] is toxic for them. Their normally round bodies became flat as
[00:16:47] they became more and more meatiated.
[00:16:50] Katrina Shaddiks is the executive director of Bear Warriors
[00:16:53] United, which sued Florida's department of environmental protection in
[00:16:56] 2022, to help protect the Manities. They
[00:17:00] suffered immensely and for very long time. When humanity starves to
[00:17:03] death, it's an extremely painful process
[00:17:06] and Basically their insites melt and turn
[00:17:09] to liquid. These photos from Bear Warriors United
[00:17:13] show how desperate some of the Manities were, attempting to pull
[00:17:16] themselves out of the water eat leaves off dry land or
[00:17:20] grass along the water's edge. And this video shows manity
[00:17:24] carcases being taken to a landfill for necropsies and
[00:17:27] disposal. On this beach in the lagoon, Katrina
[00:17:31] says she found many manit carcases. She showed us
[00:17:35] some of their bones that still remain, and shared this picture
[00:17:38] with us of a Manity skull: there was a carcus
[00:17:41] of a mom, and the skeleton had started to
[00:17:44] show, and there was a baby skeleton inside of her body, so
[00:17:48] she died pregnant, and this bones of the
[00:17:51] baby were fitted perfectly inside the bones of the
[00:17:54] mother. earlier this month, federal judge ruled in favor of
[00:17:58] Bear Warriors United and against the state, finding
[00:18:01] Florida's department of environmental protection was quote, in
[00:18:05] violation of the endangered species act. "there was lacks
[00:18:08] leadership from the state of Florida over decades that
[00:18:11] allowed this problem to get worse and worse. The judge in the case ruled
[00:18:15] that there is definitive causal link between Florida's department of
[00:18:18] environmental protection wastewater regulations and the ongoing
[00:18:22] risk to Manites. Based in part on Peter Burelli's
[00:18:25] testimony, the judge found it will
[00:18:29] the lagoon to start seeing recovery. The state of Florida has
[00:18:32] admitted that it will be 12 to 15 years before seagrass
[00:18:36] has start to recover. We reached out to both the Florida Department of
[00:18:40] Environmental Protection and Florida Governor Ronda Santis,

[00:19:01] really good chance of working with the state to make sure the
[00:19:05] manities don't go extinct on our watch. Jake, the federal judge in this
[00:19:08] case has allowed Bear Warriors United to lay out the
[00:19:11] changes it wants the state to make in order to protect Manities. The
[00:19:15] group filed those requests with the court, and just to name a couple of them, they want
[00:19:19] the state to stop construction of development with on-sight
[00:19:22] sewage. They also want to incorporate a supplemental feeding
[00:19:25] program for the Manities, as we mentioned in our
[00:19:28] story, it's going to take at least decade for the sea grass, which
[00:19:32] the manit is survive to return, so we'll now have to wait and see if
