[00:26:52] cost of food for the entire family? Prices on the shelves
[00:26:55] in Serbia are skyrocketing, and reality shows that they do not
[00:26:59] match statistical calculations. Of what
[00:27:03] the state thinks is the most basic cost for
[00:27:07] food, for mere survival, a
[00:27:11] family in Serbia must allocate 26,000
[00:27:13] dinars per month, that's how the Ministry
[00:27:17] of Trade calculated the allocation for food in the
[00:27:21] minimal consumer basket. These are the most basic,
[00:27:24] cheapest products, all for survival, nothing for
[00:27:27] the soul. A three-member family does not eat
[00:27:30] statistically. They come to the store
[00:27:32] again and again, and there's always something in the basket
[00:27:35] they didn't plan. We will try to check how sensitive the household
[00:27:38] budget really is. To illustrate the minimal consumer
[00:27:42] basket, that's approximately two grocery trips a week,
[00:27:46] neither of which should exceed 3,000. We have
[00:27:49] a detailed list with all the prices, and we'll try not
[00:27:53] to exceed the planned expenditure. Sava bread is not available, so we'll take
[00:27:57] the cheapest white toast, one milk
[00:28:00] also on sale, yogurt
[00:28:02] as a mandatory item, for breakfast modestly,
[00:28:06] plain pressed ham, maybe also one pack of
[00:28:10] hot dogs, one must eat
[00:28:13] vegetables, a kilogram of potatoes, no longer in the
[00:28:16] calculation, the same amount of onions, for lunch
[00:28:20] sweet cabbage is planned, the child must eat some
[00:28:24] fruit, the cheapest apples. Searching
[00:28:27] for cheaper products is exhausting work, but
[00:28:31] oil is necessary. a kilogram of sugar, sometimes
[00:28:34] a package of rice will be needed, let's have something for
[00:28:37] the soul, 100g of coffee, flour is needed to
[00:28:41] knead something, beans when the stomach
[00:28:44] desires something specific, meat is on sale, goes into the
[00:28:48] basket, everything we bought for mere
[00:28:51] survival would cost significantly less in, say,
[00:28:55] Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Croatia,
[00:28:58] countries of the European Union, a study by the Fiscal Council showed
[00:29:02] that food prices in Serbia are almost on average for the entire
[00:29:06] union, which includes Balkan neighbors, but also some of
[00:29:10] the richest countries in the world. That study
[00:29:13] states that it refers to meat,
[00:29:16] milk, eggs, sweets,
[00:29:19] jam, oil, so the prices of those products that
[00:29:22] we use in daily life are higher than
[00:29:26] the average prices in far more
[00:29:29] developed countries of the European Union. Why is food
[00:29:32] in Serbia so expensive? As they
[00:29:35] say, on the way from the field to the table, everyone
[00:29:38] tries to profit, higher prices are built up along
[00:29:42] the entire chain, from agricultural producers who are
[00:29:46] stifled by poor agricultural policy and inefficient
[00:29:49] production, to traders who, in addition
[00:29:51] to that, want to earn. That then leads to
[00:29:55] an unequal market competition, or
[00:29:57] unequal, unequal negotiating power among all
[00:30:01] those in the chain. In the end, we
[00:30:04] as consumers pay the price. Let's see
[00:30:08] how much of a bill we made, with a prepared
[00:30:11] list, tracking prices and watching every dinar
[00:30:15] spent.
