[00:00:31] "The mission of the European Parliament is coming to observe the elections in Serbia, if the [00:00:34] invitation was sent late, what will be the mandate and scope of that mission, we will ask [00:00:38] Nemanja Tudorović Štiplija, editor of the portal [00:00:42] European Western Balkans contemporary [00:00:44] politics, in a live broadcast. [00:00:46] The Third Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade has opened a case [00:00:50] against Aleksandar Šapić, accusing him of criminal offenses of grievous [00:00:54] bodily harm and violent [00:00:56] behavior. [00:00:59] How will they vote?". Serbs from Kosovo on December 25th had [00:01:03] no way to resist the pressures and blackmail they are exposed to for a live broadcast, [00:01:07] Momčilo Trajković from the Serbian National [00:01:10] Forum speaks. [00:01:13] What culture can do, it dares to do, that is the slogan under which [00:01:17] the Black List festival of banned and exiled [00:01:20] artists is held. Our guest is actor Branislav [00:01:23] Trifunović. [00:01:26] Before the First Basic Court in Belgrade today, the accused was heard. [00:01:30] for the attack on our team that happened on November 20th last [00:01:33] year in front of the National Assembly building, on that occasion, the camera of [00:01:37] our television was broken. How the hearing went will be reported by [00:01:40] our reporter Veljko Pajević. Veljko, [00:01:44] your interlocutor was present today at [00:01:46] the trial. [00:01:49] Exactly, Maja, our interlocutor Veran Matić [00:01:52] was in the first basic court exactly, as you said and reminded [00:01:56] our television viewers, all that happened, well, almost [00:01:59] a year ago, from that unfortunate event on November [00:02:03] 20th in front of the National Assembly when the television [00:02:07] team of our television, our colleague, [00:02:10] journalist Maja Nikolić and our [00:02:13] television cameraman Ivan Ica Pavlović were attacked. [00:02:16] Veran, you were in the first basic court today, how did it [00:02:19] go? I will try to be at least [00:02:23] a little like Ana Novaković as a court [00:02:25] reporter. Um, it was, uhm... [00:02:30] "as always, quite uninteresting our trials are such that [00:02:34] uh simply uh [00:02:36] the law on criminal procedure and everything else that defines them are not exactly [00:02:40] uh uh attractive when it comes to the trial itself [00:02:43] uh today the main trial was [00:02:47] repeated because the judge was changed [00:02:50] Ružica Savić is the new judge in this case, so [00:02:54] the main trial, everything that happened before that is repeated, uh of course [00:02:58] this time they..." only read [00:03:02] uh what has already happened uh [00:03:05] and uh it was [00:03:07] always in such situations [00:03:11] unpleasant uh the accused came [00:03:14] together with two [00:03:17] companions in T-shirts with the image of Ratko Mladić and [00:03:21] with certain statements and slogans [00:03:24] on those T-shirts and those were [00:03:27] messages when something like that is done. then those are [00:03:30] messages primarily to those who are harmed in this [00:03:34] case Maja and Ivan were not [00:03:37] not there luckily, of course, but I felt [00:03:41] uncomfortable when uh when I saw that and when I saw [00:03:44] that the accused was wearing Ratko Mladić's cap and that [00:03:48] quote is uh related to Ratko Mladić [00:03:51] and uh uh I interpreted [00:03:54] it as a certain kind of new threat in this [00:03:58] case as... We all know [00:04:01] the N1 team was attacked in front of [00:04:04] of the so-called "ćacilend" [00:04:08] uh and what I can say now is that [00:04:12] the accused uh Vladan Srtenović is his [00:04:15] name uh has [00:04:17] admitted [00:04:19] uh that he admitted that he committed uh uh [00:04:23] that act of assault but [00:04:25] that uh by doing so he [00:04:29] accepted guilt uh and uh [00:04:32] he accepted that what he stated [00:04:35] in his testimony to the prosecutor [00:04:39] of the First Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in February this year is relevant, does that mean that [00:04:43] he said nothing else today, that he said nothing else because his [00:04:46] representative, uh [00:04:49] lawyer, said that he would not answer questions from the court and [00:04:53] questions from the defense, questions from the prosecution, and he [00:04:56] confirmed that uh in that... [00:05:00] principal statement, he said that he accepts guilt, but [00:05:03] not as defined by [00:05:07] uh uh the prosecutor, in this case, in that [00:05:11] statement he uh... told the prosecutor [00:05:14] that [00:05:17] about ten or twenty days before this [00:05:20] event, that is, on November 20th last year, [00:05:23] he uh was coincidentally [00:05:27] near "ćacilend" on the other [00:05:31] side uh near the side related to the city assembly [00:05:35] that the Insajder television crew filmed him there [00:05:38] that he was allegedly mentioned there [00:05:41] by name, although he was there by chance, [00:05:44] then after three or four days he came there [00:05:48] again, his aunt sent him to see uh how [00:05:52] they were, I don't know, brother, sister, I don't know who, uh, and he [00:05:55] then accidentally moved that fence, [00:05:59] so it was filmed and then someone thought he was an usher, then [00:06:02] he was hit by some block [00:06:05] uh he was injured and that's [00:06:09] all he can say about his own involvement. "then [00:06:13] someone helped him there and then he [00:06:16] uh uh realized that those who were in "ćacilend" were his friends [00:06:20] and uh [00:06:24] he loved them more than the others uh who [00:06:28] gathered around that space uh on [00:06:31] this day when he uh attacked [00:06:34] the N1 team he uh [00:06:37] allegedly uh was moving crates of apples [00:06:40] between two tents that are located" [00:06:43] or there in front of the city assembly and that they then went to buy something to [00:06:47] eat, then he saw uh uh [00:06:49] the team, he saw the camera, there was a tripod uh [00:06:52] then that reminded him of this [00:06:56] footage allegedly from Insajder television uh [00:06:59] and uh he came and asked why [00:07:03] you were filming, allegedly the camera itself fell, so he even took [00:07:06] it and got a little angry and threw it [00:07:10] back on the floor, so that's in... [00:07:12] some way his, his story in this case is that he was [00:07:16] angry, now this story of his representative [00:07:19] also follows that today he asked [00:07:22] for a psychiatric evaluation to be done [00:07:25] at that moment, now I don't know how that's possible [00:07:28] his lawyer is asking, his lawyer, that uh how is it [00:07:32] possible to do it in reverse, but first we have to go back again, I don't know [00:07:36] what the introduction looked like, uh the person who attacked [00:07:39] your team was convicted of murder. [00:07:43] "first to 35 years, and then it was reduced to 15 years, I think he served [00:07:47] 10 years, then after being released from prison in 2023, [00:07:50] he was convicted of violent behavior, [00:07:53] that is, uh he was on the run uh when it comes [00:07:57] to uh that violent behavior in Arilje, [00:08:00] beating someone and uh then he was arrested in [00:08:04] Croatia and brought here, he was serving his [00:08:07] sentence, I think it's almost coincident [00:08:10] with his release from serving." [00:08:13] that sentence uh followed and this series [00:08:16] of events followed, that is, this violence [00:08:19] against the N1 team, so what we [00:08:22] could see today [00:08:25] at the trial itself is that [00:08:29] the representatives of uh Maja [00:08:33] Nikolić and Ivan and N1 uh insisted on [00:08:36] the fact that uh uh [00:08:39] those witnesses who were there should also be heard, that is, not... only [00:08:42] them, but also those who uh were at that [00:08:46] place uh who witnessed this attack, so [00:08:49] in addition to the cameras uh [00:08:53] that certainly filmed this event, they should also be witnesses, the defense counsel [00:08:56] uh of the accused in this case [00:08:59] opposed this, because uh in that case [00:09:03] it would mean that it expands, that it goes beyond the scope [00:09:07] of uh the indictment, that is, the criminal offense that [00:09:11] uh was prosecuted. "here presented in the indictment, you mentioned that his lawyer [00:09:15] requested that psychiatric [00:09:18] examination for an event that happened almost a year [00:09:22] ago, how did the court react, is that an official [00:09:25] proposal from his representative, an official proposal the court will decide later [00:09:29] about it as well as about all other proposals [00:09:30] in [00:09:34] his representative said that there were several [00:09:37] uh health interventions in the meantime uh [00:09:41] the accused is under..." house arrest and [00:09:43] um the defense, that is, [00:09:47] the prosecutors, your representatives, still requested [00:09:50] that medical documentation be provided, if such a thing [00:09:53] actually happened, however, I think that [00:09:57] that is again some tactic in this [00:10:00] case that will only contribute to [00:10:03] this court process being prolonged, tell us, [00:10:07] you mention our colleagues, their lawyers were there today in [00:10:11] the courtroom, when is it... expected that Maja and Ivan [00:10:14] will be called before the court? Maja uh [00:10:18] already the judge [00:10:21] said that Maja Nikolić would be examined [00:10:24] next. And November 20th is [00:10:27] scheduled for that hearing, that is exactly the anniversary of the [00:10:31] attack, that is, yes, that is the hearing at 1 PM, [00:10:35] so only a few hours from the anniversary, [00:10:38] I don't think it's uh [00:10:42] intentional and I think it's more of a coincidence, but [00:10:46] coincidences have happened many times before, I remember a situation where a trial was [00:10:50] scheduled against [00:10:53] the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation. It was exactly on the day Slavko Ćuruvija was killed and so [00:10:57] on, so anything can happen, then we can say that it's no longer [00:11:01] a coincidence, Velan, when you mentioned that the accused was [00:11:05] wearing a T-shirt with the image of Ratko Mladić and a cap, [00:11:09] was that in front of the courtroom or did he enter the [00:11:12] courtroom like that? Well, he I, I think I sent [00:11:16] a photo to the newsroom so I think it will be [00:11:20] shown during this uh [00:11:22] broadcast, that was before entering the courtroom. He even [00:11:26] came in a jacket and then took off his jacket and left it in front of the courtroom so he would stay in just the [00:11:29] T-shirt so that those [00:11:33] messages on the front could be seen, did [00:11:36] the judge react to the way he was dressed? No, that's [00:11:40] shocking to me that there was no reaction even though it was completely evident that [00:11:44] it was a demonstration uh on the front of that T-shirt [00:11:47] besides uh uh Ratko Mladić's cap, the convicted war [00:11:50] criminal, we always have to [00:11:53] emphasize that... there was a message, from your struggle [00:11:56] our freedom was born, on the back [00:12:00] of that T-shirt, besides uh, the image [00:12:03] of Ratko Mladić, there was also the image of Patriarch Pavle and [00:12:07] allegedly his quote, uh, a man is [00:12:10] stronger dead than an inhumane [00:12:13] person alive, I watched that the whole time [00:12:16] of the trial and I truly felt it as a threat that was [00:12:20] directed at everyone who in this [00:12:22] case represented independent [00:12:25] journalism, professional journalism, reporting, because the prosecutor [00:12:29] uh uh defined this attack not only as destruction [00:12:33] of equipment, a camera uh uh, but as an attack on free journalism, [00:12:36] free reporting, so what happened, what we could all [00:12:40] see, is not just an aggressive attack and not just [00:12:43] a violent act in that area, but it is precisely [00:12:46] an attack on free journalism, which, as we [00:12:49] see every day, such attacks from that [00:12:53] day, and the day before... that uh are multiplying [00:12:57] and uh with the aim of absolutely preventing [00:13:00] impartial and professional reporting, especially again [00:13:03] in these days now which are extremely important and decisive for [00:13:07] the future of Serbia. Veran, thank you for the conversation, [00:13:11] and thank you, thank you for uh [00:13:14] sticking together as a newsroom and to the whole [00:13:17] group for being so supportive of each other [00:13:20] and I think we must not forget such [00:13:23] events in... those bigger perhaps events and that [00:13:27] we must always stand up for our female and male colleagues, because [00:13:30] I can only imagine how dramatic that secondary victimization [00:13:34] is for uh female and male journalists like [00:13:38] Maja and Ivan were in this case in such situations when [00:13:41] a trio appears uniformed [00:13:44] in such a way that really represents [00:13:48] a horrifying message from our uh immediate immediate [00:13:51] past. We heard Veran Matić. from [00:13:55] Anema, to conclude, Maja, this broadcast after [00:13:59] today's hearing and questioning of the accused [00:14:02] on November 20th, exactly on the day when the attack on two [00:14:06] of our colleagues happened last year, there will be [00:14:10] a hearing at which our [00:14:13] Maja will testify, [00:14:35] has initiated a case, a pre-investigation procedure is underway against Aleksandar [00:14:39] Šapić due to the existence of grounds for suspicion that he committed criminal acts [00:14:42] of grievous bodily harm and violent behavior, the prosecution states for [00:14:46] N1. So far, in the procedure, the public prosecutor [00:14:50] has ordered police officers to obtain and [00:14:53] seize video recordings from all available security [00:14:56] surveillance cameras that could have recorded the incident, [00:15:00] also, the urgent center was asked to provide complete medical [00:15:04] documentation for all other participants in the event, while [00:15:08] for the injured party Tatjana Mićić, the public prosecutor again requested [00:15:11] the provision of complete medical documentation, as stated in the prosecution's [00:15:15] response. [00:15:18] The leader of the "Kreni Promeni" movement, Savo Manojlović, said that [00:15:21] a session of the city parliament is scheduled for Tuesday, at which [00:15:25] the dismissal of Mayor Aleksandar [00:15:28] Šapić will be discussed. Opposition councilors submitted a request [00:15:32] on October 7th to convene an extraordinary session [00:15:35] of the Belgrade City Assembly with a proposal for Šapić's [00:15:38] dismissal. The initiative was launched after an incident in which [00:15:41] Šapić attacked councilwoman Tatjana [00:15:44] Mićić. [00:15:48] I think the progressives are planning to remove [00:15:50] him. [00:15:54] into the projection itself, no one expects that he will [00:15:57] be voted out at the session itself, if public [00:16:00] pressure is sufficiently strong and public [00:16:03] opinion polls show it, an attempt will be made to influence [00:16:07] Aleksandar Šapić to resign, of course, the question is [00:16:11] what compromising information he has on the other side, whether in [00:16:14] this election cycle the government will be able to [00:16:18] our clear message to be is that Aleksandar Šapić cannot [00:16:22] be the mayor of this city and we demand that things [00:16:25] be cleared up. Aleksandar Vučić hereby becomes [00:16:29] the political protector of a bully Aleksandar [00:16:31] Šapić. A protest was held in front of the Ministry of Education [00:16:35] by employees of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš who have not received [00:16:39] their salary for almost 80 days. The protest was covered by our Nada [00:16:43] Živanović. It's the 84th day, [00:16:47] emphasize the employees of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, since [00:16:51] they haven't received their salaries. That's why today they came to Belgrade, [00:16:54] more precisely to Nemanjina 22 in front of the Ministry of Education. [00:16:58] There they said, "We won't give up philosophy." The gathering started at 12 [00:17:01] o'clock with speeches by employees of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš. [00:17:05] They emphasize that all the power of the state apparatus is directed at this [00:17:09] institution, but despite that, they add, classes and activities [00:17:12] at the faculty have been ongoing without interruption the whole time. [00:17:15] The Faculty of Philosophy is operating at full capacity, [00:17:19] not at 100, but at 150% [00:17:22] strength. In addition to teaching and non-teaching [00:17:25] activities, we have been forced for these 11 [00:17:28] months to also do independent [00:17:31] research work that connected us with [00:17:35] students and non-teaching staff because we are [00:17:39] forced to deal with the law, to [00:17:42] study laws, they reminded that the Ministry of Education [00:17:46] has not published the decision that suspended funds for the Faculty of Philosophy [00:17:50] in Niš, for that reason [00:17:53] a copy of the Law on Education [00:17:57] to remind the authorities, they emphasize, of the obligation to respect [00:18:00] the law. After a protest walk, the participants of the gathering arrived at the Government [00:18:04] of Serbia where they once again handed over [00:18:07] the same copy. We come to work, we work with students, we teach [00:18:11] classes, exams, we do all those activities that we usually [00:18:15] do. So, we work normally. If [00:18:18] normal even exists as a category with which we can [00:18:22] describe what has been happening to us for some time now. They recall the problem [00:18:25] with the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš [00:18:29] establish the Faculty of Serbian Studies and separate three departments [00:18:32] from the Niš Faculty of Philosophy, which the University in Niš does not agree to. Since [00:18:36] pressures, and as of today, they have once [00:18:40] again stated in Belgrade, "We won't give up philosophy in Niš." The gathering [00:18:44] ended in front of the Serbian government, and the employees of the Faculty of Philosophy in [00:18:47] Niš pointed out that they hope that they will receive some kind [00:18:51] of response from the Ministry of Justice. Nada [00:18:53] Živanović, N1 Belgrade. [00:18:57] Students of the Jovan Jovanović Zmaj Gymnasium in Novi Sad marked [00:19:00] their return to the building of that secondary school. Before the start of classes, [00:19:03] the Choir of the Jovanović Gymnasium sang the school anthem, and a statement was read. [00:19:07] A statement in which it was pointed out that information from yesterday's plenum [00:19:11] of students appeared in tabloids that students [00:19:14] were spied on. Parents accused Mićina and [00:19:18] Stojković of abusing minor students for [00:19:21] promociju Srpske napredne [00:19:22] Party. [00:19:25] I hope that soon we will also celebrate the return [00:19:29] of over 60 teachers and professional associates who were dismissed. [00:19:33] This is our way of celebrating our return to Jovanović's [00:19:37] and... the director's we saw with this wholehearted [00:19:40] help from Mayor Mićina in their pre-election campaign where [00:19:44] our minor students were used as decoration for their return to [00:20:00] family. Healthy [00:25:50] family, [00:26:18] to observe the elections in Serbia, if the invitation was sent late, what will [00:26:22] be the mandate and scope of that mission, we will ask Nemanja [00:26:25] Tudorović, editor of the European Western [00:26:28] Balkans contemporary politics portal, in the live show. [00:26:32] How will Serbs from Kosovo vote on October 25th? There are ways [00:26:36] to resist the pressures and blackmail they are exposed to for a live day, [00:26:39] Momčilo Trajković from the Serbian National [00:26:43] Forum will speak. [00:26:45] What culture can do, it dares to do. That is the slogan under which the [00:26:49] Black List festival of forbidden and [00:26:52] exiled artists is held. Our guest is actor Branislav [00:26:55] Trifunović. [00:27:04] We enter the elections with 106,000 registered voters [00:27:08] abroad. Serbia will make history by having some citizens [00:27:11] abroad having to vote according to the [00:27:14] voting time in Serbia. For example, the diaspora in America [00:27:17] and Australia will have to vote during the night. There are problems [00:27:21] in European countries, in the Netherlands a large number of voters will vote in [00:27:25] only one polling station. [00:27:29] The final choice according to the unified voter list is 1, [00:27:32] 934 voters, which is almost [00:27:35] four times more than in the previous elections from 2023. [00:27:39] All our voters are assigned to one [00:27:42] polling station, which is the embassy in The Hague, [00:27:46] which has been the practice in previous elections. Of course, with [00:27:49] all the disappointment, we are still in a relatively good [00:27:53] position compared to other diasporas and above all [00:27:56] we are very satisfied and proud of the record number of registered [00:28:00] voters. Our community is very organized, so we are already [00:28:04] connecting and will travel together, by public [00:28:07] transport, by private transport, connecting people who [00:28:10] need transport or accommodation, we help each [00:28:13] other as we can. What is uncertain is that [00:28:17] there will be very large crowds and long waits because our [00:28:20] embassy has very little space for voting, [00:28:24] so at the same time we are organizing a festival of [00:28:27] freedom, we want to celebrate that [00:28:31] holiday of democracy on election day. But at the same time show solidarity [00:28:34] with voters in Serbia and other diasporas, so some [00:28:38] of our voters will appear in pajamas to [00:28:42] show solidarity with voters in Australia and [00:28:45] America, besides that we have organized events [00:28:49] - to animate voters [00:28:52] as well as their families who come with them, because it is important [00:28:56] for us to persevere in that long wait in the [00:28:59] cold Dutch autumn. [00:29:02] "The mission of the European Parliament comes to monitor the elections in Serbia," said for N1 [00:29:06] MEP from the Green Group Vladimir Prebilić, [00:29:09] the President of the Assembly and the President Ana Brnabić invited the European [00:29:13] Parliament to send a mission to the elections in Serbia [00:29:16] after the deadline expired. This is [00:29:19] a message in itself, because if a [00:29:23] call is sent in this way, it's not very good, [00:29:26] but all in all, the call came and the [00:29:30] mission, the observation mission of the European Parliament, [00:29:33] will come to Serbia, that the European [00:29:36] Parliament and the Commission, that is, allegedly the Commissioner for Enlargement [00:29:40] Marta Kos, was clear that a lot needs to change, [00:29:43] meaning the legal framework in which the [00:29:46] elections in Serbia will be held, one of them was that REM [00:29:50] should do its job, it is clear to everyone that in this situation [00:29:53] it cannot do its job, we demanded that the [00:29:57] voter lists be cleaned up, none of that happened, so there is [00:30:01] a lot. and I sent and Benčka, [00:30:05] so the Venice Commission sent [00:30:08] many of those things that need to be adopted to make the [00:30:11] conditions for elections in Serbia [00:30:15] better than they are now, but none of that was [00:30:19] noticed, we are not happy about that, but what is [00:30:22] is, I can only say that we will carefully [00:30:25] and thoroughly monitor everything that is happening now in Serbia [00:30:29] and when the report comes. [00:30:32] So the reports that will put everything on [00:30:36] the table, then everything will be reflected [00:30:39] there, but it is clear to us, it is better [00:30:42] to have elections than not to have elections in Serbia [00:30:45] at all, I really feel bad that such things are [00:30:49] happening, but that only strengthens all of us [00:30:52] that the conditions under which the [00:30:56] elections in Serbia will be held are not as fair as they should be.
