He was the person who said that [00:00:40] feel it happens automatically, cleanliness is more important than freedom. And today, [00:00:44] on this day, we are starting a new chapter of a story that has been [00:00:47] written for the past 12 years. Absolutely right, Ayushman, welcome to [00:00:51] I'll tell you some, and you know many of primary health services, Season 13 of the NDTV Dettol Banega Swasth India [00:00:54] campaign. Now, most campaigns come and go, [00:00:57] Ayushman. There's a slogan, there's a season, and then [00:01:01] everyone forgets. But this one has stayed because [00:01:05] change is not a one-day event. Change is a habit, [00:01:08] and habits obviously take time. 13 years, [00:01:11] Ayushman, is what it has taken to turn an [00:01:14] idea into a way of life. And Ayushman, when this [00:01:17] journey started, it started with a simple question: [00:01:21] Can our country, India, [00:01:24] be clean? And then you all answered it, the [00:01:28] mothers in the villages who demanded toilets in their homes, the teachers who turned their classrooms [00:01:32] into the first laboratory of change, the children [00:01:35] who went home and started explaining to their parents, the [00:01:39] ASHA workers, sarpanches, and sanitation workers, without whom this story [00:01:43] is incomplete. I have always been drawn to stories that [00:01:46] people hesitate to talk about, whether it's toilets, periods, hygiene. [00:01:50] This campaign also does the same. It starts the conversation [00:01:54] India needs to have. We have a long way to go and to keep at [00:01:58] it. We do have a long way to go. We are keeping at it, Ayushman. [00:02:01] Just as the whole world learned from the COVID pandemic [00:02:05] that clean and healthy go together, we saw [00:02:09] that hygiene alone is not enough. Health obviously is the [00:02:12] bigger picture. And that's why Clean India will become [00:02:16] Healthy India. Cleanliness was the first [00:02:19] step. Health is the destination. Giving better [00:02:23] health in more hands every day. Yes, better [00:02:26] health because good health is not anyone's privilege. [00:02:30] It is the right of every Indian in more hands because [00:02:34] Gandhi ji's dream this responsibility is not just of doctors or the government. It is in the hands of a teacher, [00:02:37] in the hands of a mother, in the hands of a child, and yes, [00:02:41] in your hands, because every day, because health is not a one-day [00:02:44] celebration, it is a daily habit, because now is the time to say, [00:02:48] I am the change. And as we begin a new chapter, the [00:02:52] launch of Season 13, I would like to welcome three leaders who [00:02:56] played an important role in taking this vision forward. Joining [00:03:00] us virtually is Chris Lyt, Chief Executive Officer, Reckitt. [00:03:03] Joining us here we have Gaurav Jain, Executive Vice President, [00:03:07] Regional Director, Reckitt South Asia. We also have with us [00:03:10] Rahul Kanwal, CEO and Editor-in- Chief, NDTV. And we have [00:03:14] with us Sonu Sood, actor, producer, and philanthropist, someone who's [00:03:17] been on the campaign early and an integral part of it. Thank you all so [00:03:20] much for joining us today. But [00:03:23] before we go any further, we have a special message from the Health [00:03:27] Minister of our country. [00:03:32] On the auspicious occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth [00:03:36] anniversary, I extend my heartfelt wishes [00:03:39] to all of you on the launch [00:03:43] of the 13th season [00:03:44] of 'Banega Swasth India' (India will become healthy). For the past 12 seasons, [00:03:48] 'Banega Swasth India' [00:03:51] The game is a passion has been doing the important work of spreading [00:03:54] the message of cleanliness, [00:03:57] health, and nutrition [00:04:01] to every person in the country. [00:04:04] This campaign has made many [00:04:08] meaningful efforts, from training sanitation [00:04:12] workers to promoting awareness [00:04:14] of cleanliness and healthy lifestyles [00:04:18] among children. I am proud that [00:04:20] decades after independence, [00:04:24] Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi [00:04:27] ji gave the call for Swachh Bharat (Clean India) [00:04:31] from the ramparts of the Red Fort [00:04:34] and explained the importance of cleanliness. [00:04:37] Therefore, for every Under his leadership, the Swachh Bharat [00:04:40] Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) [00:04:42] they call and it connects. has today taken the form of a [00:04:45] powerful mass movement. Continuing this [00:04:48] spirit, this year's theme, [00:04:51] 'Better Health in More Hands,' [00:04:55] seems very relevant and important to [00:04:58] me. Over the [00:05:00] past 12 years, under the [00:05:03] excellent leadership of Prime Minister [00:05:06] Shri Narendra Modi ji, the country [00:05:09] has achieved cleanliness and health. [00:05:44] The scheme is providing protection from [00:05:47] the financial burden of illness to [00:05:51] over 61 crore citizens. This [00:05:54] number is more than the total population [00:05:57] of the countries of the European Union. [00:06:00] To provide comprehensive [00:06:03] 12 essential health packages are being [00:06:07] provided through the Ayushman Arogya Mandir [00:06:11] network. Due to [00:06:14] the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (TB Free India campaign), the number of new TB [00:06:17] cases reported annually in India [00:06:20] has decreased by 21%, [00:06:23] and TB-related deaths have decreased [00:06:26] by 28%. With his visionary leadership, [00:06:30] the Prime Minister has provided a strong [00:06:34] safety net to crores of Indians. [00:06:38] Prime Minister Modi believes [00:06:40] that the goal of a healthy society [00:06:44] can be achieved by expanding health [00:06:47] facilities and promoting awareness and a [00:06:51] healthy lifestyle. The 'Banega [00:06:54] Swasth India' (India will become healthy) campaign will encourage [00:06:58] the active participation of every citizen [00:07:01] in realizing Prime Minister Shri [00:07:05] Narendra Modi ji's resolve to make [00:07:08] India a developed nation by 2047. [00:07:11] A healthy and aware citizen is [00:07:15] the foundation of a strong nation. [00:07:18] Healthy citizens, healthy society, and [00:07:21] healthy India. This is the strong [00:07:25] foundation of a developed India. I extend [00:07:28] my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes [00:07:31] to the entire team of 'Banega Swasth [00:07:35] India' and its partner organizations [00:07:38] for the 13th season. Let us all [00:07:42] together resolve to make Mahatma [00:07:47] of a clean and healthy India a [00:07:50] reality. Jai Hind! Thank you very [00:07:53] much, Nadda ji. Somewhere, [00:07:56] government support is also very important because [00:07:59] private companies and media get involved [00:08:02] in such missions, but at the same time, [00:08:06] when the government's power is applied, then its [00:08:10] effect is truly visible on the ground. It's fantastic to be here. [00:08:12] We want to go across to Chris Lait of Reckitt Globally. Thank you very much, Chris, for [00:08:16] joining us and thank you for partnering with NDTV in [00:08:19] this very important mission. We're broadcasting live [00:08:23] across a country of 1.4 billion people [00:08:26] and your organization's core mission has been [00:08:30] better health in more hands every day, but [00:08:33] every day is a massive logistical and behavioral [00:08:36] hurdle. As viewers watch this telethon, [00:08:40] how does Reckitt ensure that basic wellness doesn't remain a [00:08:44] luxury for the urban and reaches people all across [00:08:48] the country, especially in those parts where they needed the [00:08:51] most? [00:08:54] Well, the question for us is not how we reach 1.4 billion people [00:08:57] once, but actually how healthier choices can [00:09:01] become part of everyday life for 1.4 billion [00:09:04] people. That's a fundamentally different challenge. At [00:09:08] Reckitt, we've learned that improving health at scale requires [00:09:12] three things. The first thing is access. Better health [00:09:16] cannot depend on where you live or what you earn. It requires [00:09:20] solutions that are affordable, available, and relevant [00:09:23] across diverse communities, say [00:09:26] from major cities to the most remote parts of the country. [00:09:30] The second element is trust. Sustainable [00:09:33] behavior changes happen through healthcare workers, those [00:09:37] at the frontline, and the leaders in the community who all play [00:09:40] a critical role turning health information into [00:09:44] action and action into [00:09:46] habits. And at Reckitt, we're guided by the simple [00:09:49] principle: doing the right thing always. That trust is [00:09:53] not built through what we say; it is earned through [00:09:56] consistent action, long-term commitment, and [00:09:59] delivering meaningful outcomes for [00:10:02] communities. And then the third element is [00:10:05] prevention. The greatest public health impact comes when [00:10:09] we help people stay healthy, not just treat illness. [00:10:13] That's why we focus on embedding early [00:10:16] healthy behaviors, particularly among children, [00:10:19] where small interventions can create lifelong [00:10:22] benefits and actually also influence entire [00:10:25] families. So ultimately, it takes all those three [00:10:28] components to be successful in this mission. 30 [00:10:32] million children reached, lacks of [00:10:35] schools impacted across the country. But the [00:10:38] question is about outcome. It's not just about [00:10:41] outreach. How do you ensure that the [00:10:44] outreach that you're being able to deliver is actually [00:10:47] leading to measurable outcome, which I know is extremely important for you? [00:10:51] I think I would start by saying that as a [00:10:54] company, what makes us very different is our result [00:10:57] orientation. And and and we are completely [00:11:00] obsessed about results in our daily daily job, so we don't do [00:11:04] things which look fashionable but are not yielding the results. [00:11:07] And that's like a philosophy that we have and we pass on that [00:11:11] philosophy to BSI. So whatever results, I mean, [00:11:16] them is all audited. It's third-party audited. [00:11:19] So it's not bunkum, or bullshit, which a lot of people might [00:11:23] believe. And then we work with very smart people in the [00:11:26] government. I don't think Rahul would be sitting here after 13 [00:11:30] years if we didn't have results to show. And all these state governments [00:11:34] and central government helping us to extend our programs, that wouldn't have [00:11:37] happened. So, I think on our [00:11:40] first program of the school hygiene curriculum, which has been [00:11:44] our longest running, I can tell you results on how handwashing has [00:11:48] changed over years and how proper handwashing has happened. But the one metric [00:11:51] we look at is absenteeism in schools. [00:11:55] When we started in 2017, it was about 36%. [00:11:59] In eight years, it's come down to 20%. Now, [00:12:01] that huge difference on this large scale is basically [00:12:05] because of two things: one is a reduction in diarrhea and pneumonia, [00:12:09] which cause, which are handborne diseases. And so that's a [00:12:12] big thing that we track. On [00:12:15] our Durex program, we basically [00:12:18] track the knowledge that these kids get on on condom [00:12:22] use and on sexually transmitted diseases. Do they have the knowledge to help [00:12:25] prevent that? When we started, that [00:12:28] knowledge, the way we track it, was less than 2%. Today, [00:12:32] it's gone up to 25%. And and what we know from global [00:12:36] studies on on this subject is that this [00:12:38] knowledge is extremely correlated very highly to [00:12:42] when they get older and sexually active, to [00:12:46] reduction in teen pregnancies and [00:12:49] reduction in STIs. So that's something we track. I think [00:12:52] we we have this program on self-care. We launched [00:12:56] it four years back. We tested it in two districts, and the aim [00:13:00] there was to reduce mortality deaths from zero to [00:13:03] two years to zero. I think we did that. So we we did it for [00:13:07] three years. We made deaths zero in those two districts. [00:13:11] The previous three years, the number of deaths in those [00:13:14] districts was about 1300. So in some way, you can say we [00:13:17] stopped or avoided 1300 deaths. And now we've [00:13:21] taken that to to 22 districts in the country, and we hope to achieve the [00:13:25] same. On our World Toilet [00:13:28] College, we we now have six of them. We [00:13:31] have 25 cities covered. We have trained about [00:13:34] two and a half lakh sanitation workers. We [00:13:38] have a 90% placement rate, so we get them [00:13:41] occupations in, say, hospitals, clinics, [00:13:44] hotels. A much better way of living. And and we also [00:13:48] get them government schemes. So Ayushman [00:13:51] Bharat, the Ujjwala scheme, insurance schemes which they didn't have. [00:14:25] Not one Sood, but 10-12 people would turn up. How do you decide whom to help and whom [00:14:28] not to, because so many people need help? Whom can you help and whom can you not? I couldn't do it. [00:14:32] In so many years, Rahul, I think we develop [00:14:36] an X-ray machine inside us, that when we start talking, [00:14:40] we know how genuine the case is. Even today, 200-300 people [00:14:44] come to my office, in front of my house. And when I leave in the evening, [00:14:47] when I meet them, some have medical emergencies, [00:14:51] some have education problems. But in the last six, seven years, [00:14:55] such a network has been built [00:14:58] that even in small districts across the country, [00:15:02] where someone wants to study or get treatment or needs a bed, [00:15:07] During COVID, I connected with about 7.5 lakh people [00:15:10] whom I sent home. Today, those 7.5 lakh people [00:15:14] are like my volunteers, that if we need to send someone to Gonda district [00:15:18] in UP, I'll press Gonda, and 10 contacts will appear there. [00:15:22] Then we call them and say, "Please send this to him." If someone needs a buffalo, [00:15:26] we look for people, and then that boy goes to find a buffalo, which one is good [00:15:30] and gives good milk, and a calf is also given along with it, [00:15:33] so that the house that was destroyed in the flood can get a livelihood. [00:15:36] So these are small examples. Today, today, when I was coming here this morning, [00:15:40] when I woke up, my phone rang at 5:30. [00:15:44] I was about to get up, so I saw that someone was calling. I [00:15:48] called back, and they said, "Sir, my brother's son is outside PGI Lucknow, [00:15:52] he is not getting admission, and he is very serious. Please do something." [00:15:55] So I sent a message to the doctors [00:15:58] there, and I got a call at 6:15. And by the time I was coming from [00:16:02] my house to this place, he had got admission, [00:16:05] and finally he is getting treated. The aim is that perhaps God [00:16:09] chooses that you do something, and then it [00:16:12] will happen. And that that makes your day very special. So I [00:16:18] I don't know, but the biggest lesson that I've [00:16:21] learned in all these years is that [00:16:25] you know, don't hesitate to ask for favors. You know, if I [00:16:29] called you and said, "Rahul, let's help him with his studies," or "Don't ask [00:16:33] for money," "I don't have money," then tell me if there's anything else. [00:16:36] Don't. [00:17:07] Get ready for something really exciting, strength, balance [00:17:10] or incredible moves ka ek zaberdast combination malkha. [00:20:39] the story is not over, because the Pacific [00:20:42] Ocean is still warming up, and India [00:20:46] may also have to pay the price. [00:21:20] The temperature of that important region, which measures [00:21:23] the strength of El Niño, had reached three [00:21:27] degrees Celsius above normal. According to the US National [00:21:31] Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is [00:21:33] a 75% chance that by the end [00:21:37] of the year, this El Niño will become as powerful [00:21:41] as no El Niño has been since 1950. [00:21:44] By October, this El Niño had surpassed every [00:21:48] major El Niño since 1982. [00:22:08] India does not need to wait to gauge its impact. Out of 18 El Niño years recorded in India so far, monsoon rainfall has been below normal in 13. This year too, less rainfall was recorded in 38% of India's regions. By September, more than half of the country was facing drought at some level. The Ministry of Agriculture has identified 315 districts as high-risk districts due to weak monsoon and El Niño conditions. And the issue was not just about less rainfall, but also about the water that could not be collected in reservoirs. By the end of September, only 70% of the water was collected in India's 178 major reservoirs. The end of the monsoon does not mean the end of the danger. The strength of El Niño is usually most intense between October and February, and there is a fear that it will remain very powerful throughout this winter. is at some level [00:22:12] facing drought. The Ministry of Agriculture [00:22:16] has identified 315 districts as high-risk [00:22:20] districts due to weak monsoon and El Niño [00:22:24] conditions. And the matter was not just about less [00:22:27] rainfall, but also about the water that could [00:22:30] not be collected in reservoirs. By the end of [00:22:33] September, only 70% of the water was collected [00:22:37] in India's 178 major reservoirs. The end [00:22:41] of the monsoon does not mean the end of the danger. [00:22:44] The strength of El Niño is usually most intense [00:22:48] between October and February, and there is a fear [00:22:51] that it will remain very powerful [00:22:54] throughout this winter. [00:22:56] What is the probability of it lasting until February [00:22:59] 2027? 100%. According to [00:23:02] the forecast of the Climate Impact Lab, [00:23:06] the Earth's temperature may remain 1.2 [00:23:09] degrees Celsius above normal, and the number of [00:23:13] very hot days may increase by 44%. India [00:23:16] may have to pay the price of this increase [00:23:20] in temperature with human lives. Researchers estimate [00:23:24] that 15,800 people may die due to heat [00:23:28] between September and February. In this matter, India [00:23:31] is in the fourth position in the world. For a few [00:23:35] months, El Niño may raise the world's temperature [00:23:38] to a level that would normally take [00:23:42] two more decades to reach. The oceans have warmed up, [00:23:46] the direction of the winds has changed, and India [00:24:21] are preparing to weigh each other's political strength [00:24:24] in the balance of victory and defeat. Yogi and Akhilesh are taking [00:24:28] the name of Ayodhya, the city [00:24:39] Ever since we announced [00:24:41] the candidate, [00:24:44] the Bharatiya Janata Party is conducting surveys after [00:24:47] surveys, [00:24:50] and in every survey, it is lagging behind. [00:24:52] It is being heard [00:24:55] that [00:24:58] they are not even able to find a new candidate [00:25:02] in Ayodhya. [00:25:07] And those who make [00:25:09] big claims, [00:25:12] and those chief ministers who make big claims, [00:25:15] if they are so confident, then [00:25:18] they should contest from Ayodhya themselves [00:25:20] and show. [00:25:24] And those who make false promises of [00:25:28] separating milk from water will [00:25:30] be exposed by the public this time. [00:25:34] And they ask me [00:25:37] to ask the Chief Minister to contest from Ayodhya. [00:25:41] I offer you, [00:25:44] come, you also file your nomination [00:25:47] in Ayodhya, and I will also contest [00:25:50] from Ayodhya. Let's try our luck once. Let it be [00:25:54] decided. You also come, and I also [00:25:58] come. Yogi's reply was due. [00:26:02] Akhilesh's reaction also came. In Ayodhya, [00:26:05] to defeat the thieves of donations and offerings, one young PDA [00:26:09] guardian of ours is enough. Those who give a clean chit [00:26:13] to thieves are partners. If milk and water were separated, [00:26:17] then this time the public will expose all the arrogance. [00:26:20] Did you forget the Lok Sabha? This political battle in the name [00:26:24] of Ayodhya was started by Akhilesh Yadav. [00:26:27] On October 8, he went to Ayodhya. Two months before the assembly elections, [00:26:31] he had attended a Bhagwat Katha at the house of Pawan Pandey, [00:26:34] the Samajwadi Party candidate. And from there, he challenged [00:26:38] Yogi. Yogi replied three days later from Balrampur, [00:26:42] but he had already become aggressive [00:26:44] earlier. If Shri Akhilesh Yadav [00:26:48] ji has the courage, then our decision is taken [00:26:51] by him. If he has the courage, then he should also come [00:26:55] from Ayodhya, and our Chief Minister ji will also [00:26:58] come from Ayodhya. And if he wants to fight, then he should [00:27:01] definitely fight and estimate [00:27:05] his popularity and Yogi ji's popularity. [00:27:08] Yogi ji will go to his house and win. [00:27:12] Wherever he tells, he will leave Ayodhya. The dream [00:27:16] that Akhilesh ji has dreamt of forming a government, [00:27:20] that dream will remain a dream. [00:27:23] But in this battlefield of words, when Yogi descended, [00:27:26] the mafia was also mentioned, and the matter escalated [00:27:29] from disciples to the guru. Yogi is asking, [00:28:03] The Supreme Court took cognizance of the restrictions imposed [00:28:07] in Delhi. During the hearing, it commented that people have [00:28:10] the right to peaceful protest, but the method should be within [00:28:14] the ambit of law.
