The fifth edition of the [00:02:27] Oman Electricity and Energy Conference began [00:02:31] under the slogan "Empowering the Future of Energy," [00:02:34] with wide local and international participation. [00:02:37] The conference reviews energy transition paths [00:02:40] and enhancing supply security [00:02:43] and failure at and network resilience and developing electricity markets, [00:02:47] in addition to the latest [00:02:49] this week in Bangkok technologies and solutions in the areas of generation, transmission, [00:02:52] distribution, and smart [00:02:54] grids. [00:02:56] Electricity markets, sustainable energy, storage, [00:03:00] energy systems, and network [00:03:02] energy prices, escalating solutions, in addition to distribution systems, energy [00:03:05] efficiency, asset management, and performance [00:03:08] improvement are the most prominent areas that the fifth edition of the Oman [00:03:12] Electricity and Energy Conference focused on under the slogan [00:03:15] "Empowering the Future of Energy," energy [00:03:19] transition paths and network resilience in an increasingly [00:03:22] complex environment, which was opened [00:03:25] at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center with [00:03:28] local and international participation. [00:03:35] 51 provinces from [00:03:38] For electricity production, 9%. This is, of course, [00:03:42] most important axes a number that many countries [00:03:46] towns and villages in around us will not match, due to the importance of the sector and also the establishment of several [00:03:50] industrial projects and also population growth, etc. [00:03:54] including Of course, we expect the sector to increase [00:03:57] the percentage of renewable energy. [00:04:01] Sun and wind, and this, of course, comes with [00:04:04] challenges in terms of [00:04:07] maintaining grid reliability [00:04:09] and also [00:04:11] political level, a connection at ensuring the continuous flow of electricity [00:04:14] to consumers, whether in the residential sector or the industrial [00:04:18] sector. This conference today discusses three main [00:04:21] axes, the basis of which is the issue of energy [00:04:24] supply, energy security, and technology related [00:04:28] to energy. [00:04:30] In general, we talk about the challenges facing the sector, especially in some current [00:04:33] geopolitical circumstances, securing energy supply [00:04:37] chains and dealing [00:04:40] with the method [00:04:42] To talk more about the situation in of the electricity grid [00:04:44] and its general transformations, whether technological [00:04:48] changes or changes in [00:04:51] that enhances the presence of the Sultanate of Oman energy demand from different types of stakeholders. [00:04:55] The conference and exhibition [00:04:56] least five people. review energy transition paths and enhancing supply [00:05:00] security and network resilience and developing [00:05:03] electricity markets, in addition to reviewing the latest [00:05:06] technologies and solutions in the fields of generation, transmission, [00:05:09] distribution, and smart grids, and converting [00:05:12] energy transition goals into implementable [00:05:15] projects. The participants in this conference [00:05:19] in the Sultanate [00:05:22] innovative solutions that depend [00:05:25] on the flexibility of the electricity grid in general. With the development [00:05:28] of electricity systems and the entry of renewable [00:05:31] energy and the changing energy mix, the importance [00:05:35] of grid flexibility has greatly increased. We presented [00:05:38] a working paper on the topic of quality and maintenance. [00:05:42] The most important thing is that we display new products that [00:05:45] relate to renewable energy, [00:05:48] such as battery protection systems [00:05:52] and rectifier transformers, which are [00:05:55] specialized for the green hydrogen project. [00:05:58] On the sidelines of the conference and exhibition, [00:06:01] which is hosted by Namaa Electricity Distribution Company [00:06:04] in cooperation with the Institute of Electrical and [00:06:08] Electronics Engineers, four agreements were signed [00:06:11] to train 500 Omani students in [00:06:14] the field of planning, simulation, and protection of power [00:06:17] grids, in cooperation with a number [00:06:20] of higher education institutions in the Sultanate [00:06:23] of Oman. This agreement with Siemens [00:06:27] provided a set of so that it [00:06:31] can be used by students of the Electrical [00:06:34] and Computer Engineering Department at the College of Engineering. [00:06:37] Of course, this is also used by [00:06:41] public electricity companies [00:06:44] in the Sultanate. So, when [00:06:47] students use this software, when they go to the job [00:06:51] market, they will have a great background [00:06:54] on the use of this software. [00:06:57] The Oman Electricity and Energy Conference [00:07:01] seeks to enhance the position of the Sultanate of Oman [00:07:04] as a regional hub for specialized dialogue in the [00:07:07] energy sector, which is undergoing a transformation that requires [00:07:11] more resilient and reliable [00:07:14] networks capable of accommodating renewable energy sources, [00:07:18] which aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision [00:07:21] 2040 and the trend towards carbon [00:07:24] neutrality by [00:07:25] 2050. [00:07:34] And now to Arab and international news, starting from Iran, where [00:07:38] Iran confirmed that it is still [00:07:41] studying the American response to its proposal to end [00:07:44] tensions with the United States of America. [00:07:47] The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, [00:07:51] Ismail Baqaei, stated that Tehran will respond [00:07:54] to Washington through mediators once this study is completed. [00:07:57] In a related context, Major General [00:08:00] Mohsen Rezaee, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council [00:08:03] of Iran, said that Washington has agreed to some of [00:08:07] Iran's seven [00:08:08] conditions. [00:08:12] Israeli authorities began demolishing the homes [00:08:15] of 80 families in the village of Al-Dhaheriya in the [00:08:19] Negev region. The Palestinian News and Information Agency [00:08:22] WAFA stated that the demolition of homes [00:08:26] threatens the displacement of hundreds of residents amid fears [00:08:29] of dozens of families losing their homes [00:08:31] and lands. The agency indicated that the demolition [00:08:35] operations come after the Beersheba Central Court rejected a request [00:08:38] to freeze their implementation, which paved the way for the implementation [00:08:42] of demolition decisions affecting homes [00:08:45] and buildings in the village. Demolition operations had [00:08:49] significantly escalated in recent years [00:08:52] and affected dozens of homes and facilities in [00:08:55] Rahat and other [00:08:58] the Negev. [00:09:03] Three Palestinians were martyred and others were injured as a result [00:09:07] of Israeli shelling targeting the cities of Gaza and Khan Yunis. Medical [00:09:10] sources reported the martyrdom of two Palestinians and the injury [00:09:14] of others in an Israeli drone [00:09:17] shelling in Al-Mawasi, Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip. [00:09:21] Sources indicated that an Israeli drone [00:09:24] targeted a gathering near a mosque in the Al-Mawasi [00:09:27] area northwest of Rafah, adding that [00:09:30] a Palestinian was martyred due to his injuries in an Israeli [00:09:33] raid in Gaza City. This coincided with [00:09:37] Israeli artillery firing shells towards [00:09:40] areas northeast. [00:09:45] Israeli forces opened fire and fired shells towards [00:09:49] the coast of Gaza City to the north. [00:09:54] the West Bank and Gaza Strip, we are joined from Nablus [00:09:58] City in the West Bank by Dr. Suleiman [00:10:01] Bisharat, Director of Yabous Center for Consultations and Strategic [00:10:04] Studies. After welcoming you, [00:10:07] Dr., a year has passed since the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, [00:10:10] but military operations are still ongoing. How do you read [00:10:14] this disparity between the announced agreement [00:10:17] and the reality on the ground? [00:10:21] Yes, first of all, greetings to you and to the esteemed followers and viewers. [00:10:25] So, if we talk [00:10:28] about the Israeli methodology, it is very clear that Israel [00:10:32] is dealing and interacting with the targeting of all Palestinians. [00:10:35] And this synchronicity and integration in the targeting process between what [00:10:39] is happening in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip and in the occupied territories in [00:10:42] 1948 indicates that the Palestinian presence [00:10:46] is a targeted presence by the Israeli occupation. And if [00:10:50] we go and link that with the Israeli behavior [00:10:53] and the continuous Israeli aggressions on the Gaza Strip, this [00:10:56] says that Israel wants [00:11:00] the Palestinians represented, in one way or [00:11:04] another, by imposing direct Israeli hegemony and control. And for this [00:11:07] reason, the Israeli occupation reneges on all [00:11:10] the obligations that resulted from the ceasefire [00:11:14] and the cessation of the war on the Gaza Strip, and Israel disregards [00:11:17] everything that was agreed [00:11:20] upon by not continuing [00:11:23] this war. However, it is very clear that this matter [00:11:27] comes within two frameworks. The first framework [00:11:31] is related to the internal Israeli political situation. We know that [00:11:35] Israel is approaching or has begun to approach the eve [00:11:38] of elections, the Israeli Knesset elections at the [00:11:42] end of this month, and therefore there is a state of [00:11:45] increasing bids towards targeting Palestinians [00:11:49] at the expense of electoral and political competition [00:11:52] in Israel. And the second matter is very clear. [00:11:55] Israeli policies are now racing against time in [00:11:58] an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian issue in a comprehensive [00:12:01] manner, benefiting from the continuous American [00:12:04] support for these Israeli policies. [00:12:08] Do I understand from your words, Doctor, that the Israeli [00:12:11] government seeks to [00:12:16] no war, no peace, to gain a number of advantages, [00:12:20] and what are these advantages in your opinion? Exactly, this [00:12:23] is what, yes, exactly. This is what the current Israeli government wants, [00:12:27] and what the entire Jewish project wants, which is [00:12:30] to make the Palestinians pay a complex, escalating, [00:12:34] and continuous price. And this matter, [00:12:38] perhaps we can go back to the history of the Israeli occupation before [00:12:41] 1948 and even now. The Palestinian citizen pays [00:12:45] the price and pays the direct bill. The goals that Israel [00:12:48] is trying to achieve in the Gaza Strip in particular are [00:12:52] represented by a set of goals. The first goal is related to the Israeli [00:12:56] political situation. The Israeli political leadership [00:12:59] now does not want to bear the consequences of what [00:13:02] happened after October 7th and the Israeli failure, [00:13:05] because in case of accountability [00:13:08] this level, the political leadership, represented by Benjamin [00:13:11] Netanyahu, will be directly prosecuted [00:13:14] and held directly accountable for the extent of the failure. And the second [00:13:18] matter and the second goal is related to the future of the [00:13:21] Jewish project on Palestinian land. Israel believes [00:13:25] that the continuation of Israeli policies and the Israeli [00:13:28] targeting of the Gaza Strip comes within the process [00:13:32] of rebuilding a new geography and demography in [00:13:35] Palestine, where Israel has greater control [00:13:39] over the geographical and demographic presence in [00:13:42] Palestine. And the third goal is very clear that it intersects [00:13:46] between the Israeli and American political perspectives. Let us remember [00:13:50] that Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, [00:13:53] presented an investment project in the Gaza Strip. And this investment [00:13:57] project may intersect with Israeli [00:14:00] ambitions to try to transform the political and geographical [00:14:03] environment in the Gaza Strip into an investment state from [00:14:06] an economic perspective that benefits Israel and benefits [00:14:10] the United States of America. Yes, based on what you said, Doctor, and in parallel with the continued [00:14:14] violations in Gaza, the West Bank is also witnessing an escalation [00:14:17] in settler attacks and the imposition of more restrictions. Do [00:14:21] you see a connection between the two tracks, or does [00:14:24] each one have its own field and political [00:14:27] calculations? It is a complete and systematic connection, [00:14:31] and it is related on more than one level. A connection at the Israeli [00:14:36] the religious, ideological, and doctrinal Israeli [00:14:40] level, and a connection with the Israeli colonial concept. [00:14:43] And if we go back again to understand the Israeli [00:14:47] equation, Israel views the Palestinian territories in their entirety [00:14:51] as territories that should be under complete Israeli [00:14:54] sovereignty, hegemony, and control. For this reason, there is a process [00:14:57] of expanding Israeli targeting, whether [00:15:00] in the West Bank or in the Gaza Strip or in the occupied territories of 1948. [00:15:04] And the second matter, which is the level related to the settler [00:15:07] presence and the accelerating settler encroachment in the West [00:15:10] Bank, Israel and Israeli policies and the Israeli [00:15:14] political and military system have come to deal [00:15:17] with the settler presence and project in the West [00:15:21] Bank as an executive tool for all Israeli policies [00:15:25] and to impose a new reality in the West Bank. And for this reason, if we notice [00:15:28] the synchronicity of the escalation of attacks by [00:15:32] settlers in the West Bank, especially during the current [00:15:35] olive harvest season, this means that Israel [00:15:38] and the Israeli occupation want to kill the hope [00:15:41] and steadfastness that Palestinians adhere to in their presence on [00:15:45] Palestinian land. And the third matter, which I believe is very [00:15:48] dangerous, is that the Israeli occupation now believes that it is at the peak [00:15:52] of announcing the possibility of realizing the prophecy [00:15:56] of the Jewish state in exchange for the process of ending [00:15:59] the Palestinian presence through displacement operations. And for this reason, it [00:16:02] is working to accelerate all these measures and Palestinian [00:16:06] targeting. Doctor, what are the available options for [00:16:11] the West Bank, given the continuation of the war in Gaza [00:16:14] and the decline in opportunities for a political [00:16:17] settlement? First, the central and [00:16:21] primary bet is on the Palestinian citizen, and the state of Palestinian [00:16:25] steadfastness and the Palestinian presence itself is what [00:16:29] makes all Israeli proposals and Israeli options [00:16:32] options that cannot be taken for granted. [00:16:36] In other words, what has maintained the Palestinian presence and steadfastness [00:16:41] years of this occupation is what [00:16:45] completely frightens the Israeli vision. The second option [00:16:49] is the option related to the Palestinian political level, [00:16:53] represented by the political address of the Palestinian National [00:16:56] Authority. I believe that there should be a movement, [00:17:00] not only at the level of activating international resolutions, but [00:17:03] international oversight should turn into accountability [00:17:07] and imposing sanctions on the Israeli occupation. And I believe [00:17:10] that we can benefit from the extent and nature of solidarity [00:17:13] with the Palestinian cause and from the transformations [00:17:16] at the street level and at the level of international policies. The British [00:17:20] position, the French position, other European [00:17:23] positions are positions that have begun to move in an opposite [00:17:27] direction to Israeli policies, and therefore efforts should [00:17:30] be made to capitalize on them. And the last point, I believe, [00:17:34] is that there should be pressure to change the position supporting the Israeli [00:17:38] occupation by the American administration. The United States of America [00:17:41] still represents the real card, space, and umbrella [00:17:45] for supporting the entire Jewish [00:17:48] this level is affected, then there can be an impact [00:17:51] on the future and form of Israeli behavior against Palestinians. [00:17:55] Yes, Doctor, finally, can the continuation of the crisis [00:17:59] in Gaza and the escalating pressures in the West Bank open [00:18:01] a new stage of Palestinian-Israeli confrontation? [00:18:04] And what are the factors that will determine [00:18:08] the course of this confrontation? [00:18:11] The Palestinian issue is entirely and completely [00:18:14] the compass of stability or instability in the Middle East region, [00:18:18] and even in the entire world. Therefore, the continuation of the Israeli [00:18:21] occupation with this escalation and this targeting makes future [00:18:25] escalation options more numerous. And we have all [00:18:29] experienced, as Palestinians, two experiences in 1987 [00:18:32] and in 2000, how the pressures and the continuous [00:18:35] Israeli targeting of Palestinians turned that into a popular [00:18:39] confrontation at the level of the entire Palestinian cause. [00:18:42] I believe what is happening today in terms of a state of impasse [00:18:46] in the political horizon and the continuous escalation of Israeli violations [00:18:49] against Palestinians in all their places of presence, [00:18:53] this can generate a Palestinian reaction that can reach [00:18:56] a state of comprehensive popular confrontation. Therefore, it has become clear [00:19:00] that if this stage is not addressed, and if there are [00:19:03] no controls or brakes that can curb all this Israeli [00:19:07] encroachment and this Israeli savagery, [00:19:10] that can turn into fuel that can lead to [00:19:14] a state of field ignition at the Palestinian level, [00:19:17] and perhaps completely affect [00:19:19] the regional and international level. For this reason, it is very [00:19:23] clear that the next stage will be [00:19:26] the real criterion and measure. If [00:19:29] there is, after the Israeli and American elections, if there [00:19:33] is a reduction in the conflict in one way or another, it [00:19:36] can reset the accounts to the concept [00:19:40] of politics and the concept of political paths. And if [00:19:44] there is an Israeli escalation, this can [00:19:46] lead to a process of further escalation and confrontation [00:19:50] in a state of political impasse, whether that [00:19:53] is related to the Palestinian issue directly or in terms [00:19:57] of other files in the Middle East. Thank you, Doctor [00:20:01] Suleiman Bisharat, Director of Yabous Center for Consultations and [00:20:04] Strategic Studies. Thank you very much. [00:20:09] The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced an increase in the number [00:20:12] of victims of the Israeli aggression on Lebanon since October 8, [00:20:16] 2023, to date, to [00:20:19] more than 8,900 [00:20:22] dead and more than 30,000 injured. [00:20:25] The Emergency Operations Center of the Lebanese Ministry [00:20:29] of Health stated in a statement that the cumulative death [00:20:32] toll from the aggression since March 2nd until [00:20:35] today has reached more than [00:20:39] 4,300 dead and more than 12,000 injured. [00:20:42] This toll comes amid continued Israeli attacks [00:20:46] on several Lebanese areas, especially in the south, [00:20:50] where the past few hours witnessed shelling targeting towns [00:20:55] coinciding with the overflight of drones [00:20:58] and continued [00:21:00] targeting. [00:21:04] The foreign policy official in the European Union, [00:21:07] Kaja Kallas, welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in [00:21:10] the energy sector between Russia and Ukraine. [00:21:13] Kallas added that the foreign ministers of the bloc approved [00:21:17] nearly 1,600 [00:21:20] new sanctions targeting the Russian industrial [00:21:23] and military sectors. On the ground, [00:21:26] the Russian Ministry of Defense said that it launched drone [00:21:30] attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure [00:21:33] facilities, adding that it targeted a ship [00:21:36] that was transporting a military cargo to the Ukrainian [00:21:40] port of Odesa. For its part, [00:21:43] the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that a Russian [00:21:46] attack on the city of Kharkiv resulted in the injury of [00:21:50] 12 [00:21:51] people. [00:21:56] The global Multidimensional Poverty Index recorded its [00:22:00] first increase since its creation in [00:22:03] 2010, reaching 1.2 [00:22:06] billion people, according [00:22:10] to the United Nations Development Programme. [00:22:13] The programme said that the number of people increased by more than [00:22:17] 51 million this year compared [00:22:20] to last year, which is the first increase of its kind to be [00:22:23] recorded in 16 years. [00:22:26] The programme indicated that there are 1.2 [00:22:30] billion people facing difficulties in lacking [00:22:33] access to drinking water or electricity [00:22:37] and education. [00:22:43] The South Korean army said that North Korea launched several [00:22:47] ballistic missiles towards its eastern [00:22:50] waters.
