[00:08:57] The trilateral defense increment is being assessed by geopolitical experts [00:09:01] as major step towards consolidating regional security [00:09:04] cooperation and strengthening collective defense [00:09:07] capabilities [00:09:12] agent. "and I think right now what we see here with [00:09:15] the trilateral uh agreement of or the Mecca [00:09:19] joint defense agreement is that it is [00:09:22] crystallization uh [00:09:25] of security partnerships and [00:09:28] security partners um moving [00:09:31] forward uh I think they all recognize that [00:09:35] basically Iran is a threat but also not only [00:09:39] Iran is a threat but most importantly I think it this" is not a just [00:09:43] an this is not an anti [00:09:45] Iran um alliance, this is more [00:09:49] of a cooperation that [00:09:52] boosts all the respective members of this [00:09:56] alliance capabilities to defend themselves and [00:10:00] I think this is why well it's very significant we're going to [00:10:04] see more we're going to see two things more [00:10:07] security partnerships but also I anticipate we're going to see [00:10:11] more collective presence in the region, [00:10:15] Turkey and Pakistan are going to play also [00:10:19] bigger roles in the region and make sure that the security [00:10:22] vacuum is filled by such. partnerships [00:10:26] and such a force rather than uh security [00:10:29] vacuum that is just simply filled by uh spoilers in the [00:10:33] region um and so I think moving forward it's going to be very significant and [00:10:37] I think and let me just say one more thing about this I would [00:10:40] personally suggest this is better thought off as [00:10:44] regional approach rather than regional architecture security [00:10:48] architecture because I think it's it gives [00:10:51] enough leeway for all the the respective. members the [00:10:55] state [00:10:56] of of this alliance to have space and build kind [00:11:00] of uh build what they want to see from their own build [00:11:04] what is necessary for them uh rather than entrap [00:11:08] entrapping themselves with each other and i think this is why it's going to be it's [00:11:12] going to have a long life ahead of [00:11:14] us [00:11:17] Pakistan kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Turkey have signed the Mackay joint [00:11:21] defense agreement now to talk further more about this We have [00:11:25] been joined by political analyst Jahangir Khatak who is joining us from [00:11:29] New York to discuss this historic Makka defense agreement. [00:11:33] Welcome to Pakistan TV's transmission, but what [00:11:36] are your sentiments and what is your take on this [00:11:40] very important and historic increment? [00:11:44] Yeah, thank you for having me. I think it's a [00:11:48] landmark agreement, it has lot of [00:11:51] significance both at the regional level. as well [00:11:55] as at the global level, it [00:11:58] is certainly like each country that has [00:12:02] signed, this agreement as it [00:12:06] advantages for them, for saudis, it gives them more [00:12:10] security umbrella for Pakistan, it gives [00:12:12] more influence and in the middle [00:12:16] east region, Pakistan has been playing very [00:12:20] active role in Middle East diplomacy, being a key [00:12:23] mediator between. Iran and the United States [00:12:27] and also it being a part of another [00:12:30] agreement with Saudi Arabia and building on that and [00:12:34] now Turkey being part of another one and it becoming a [00:12:38] trilateral agreement, so certainly it adds [00:12:42] more players to the security [00:12:45] arrangement that we are seeing, it's emerging security arrangement. I don't think [00:12:49] this will be or these three will be the last countries that will be [00:12:53] part of such arrangement. because Iran war has [00:12:57] definitely changed lot of ground [00:13:01] realities, the security environment [00:13:05] has changed radically and [00:13:08] certainly it has actually forced many countries in [00:13:12] the region to recalibrate their own national security [00:13:16] strategy, in the past their main stay [00:13:20] for security umbrella was the United States, but now we see [00:13:23] that ' may may be Saudi Arabia which is the [00:13:27] key player or Kuwait or other countries in the [00:13:31] region, all them are showing interest in different ways in [00:13:35] engaging with countries like Pakistan, which is the only [00:13:38] nuclear power in the world which is Muslim [00:13:42] and also have the battle hearded military, so [00:13:46] this pact makes it very unique combination of three [00:13:49] powers that are in the region, [00:13:53] one being rather two being. having global implications, all them have, [00:13:57] but I think Turkey and Pakistan have more global implications [00:14:01] when it comes to military power, because Saudi [00:14:05] Arabia is bringing its deep pockets, [00:14:09] Turkey is bringing its military technology and [00:14:12] provices and Pakistan is bringing to the table [00:14:16] its military which is bettle hearted and [00:14:19] proven itself time and again how [00:14:23] effectively it can deal with crisis, whether it is at [00:14:27] home or abroad, even though Pakistan has not played [00:14:30] any such role an active military [00:14:34] theater, besides being part the international [00:14:38] peaceekeepers under the United Nations, but this is a completely [00:14:42] different game and I think that this gives Pakistan very [00:14:46] different place, so it has certainly [00:14:49] advantages for Pakistan, it may have some risks for Pakistan as [00:14:53] well, so I think overall if..." look at it, it's a landmark [00:14:56] agreement and i think that it will have far [00:15:00] reaching implications and impact on the regional [00:15:03] dynamics, the economic dynamics, the [00:15:06] geostrategic dynamics of South Asia [00:15:10] as well as the middle east and beyond, [00:15:13] because the world at large, international economy [00:15:16] depends a lot on the hydrocarbon resources the middle [00:15:20] east region and Saudi Arabia being the world's [00:15:23] largest hydrocarbon producer and second [00:15:27] largest oil reserves country, the country which has [00:15:31] the second largest oil reserves in the world, so so Saudi [00:15:35] Arabia being at the... center of it and it being signed [00:15:39] in Mecca, certainly all these are very significant, so I [00:15:43] think it's a very significant development, it's a landmark [00:15:46] agreement and I don't think these three will be the last, I think [00:15:50] there may be other countries in the region which may be [00:15:54] thinking or rethinking their strategy as well [00:15:58] when they are recalibrating their national security strategy in [00:16:01] the face of new realities that are emerging [00:16:05] out the war. with [00:16:08] Iran, now we have seen that [00:16:12] Pakistan has clearly shown its military dominance over a [00:16:15] period of time, we have faced India in operation Bunianum [00:16:19] Marsus and actually that opened up new avenues for Pakistan as [00:16:23] well, the whole world has seen the capabilities of Pakistan, the military [00:16:27] preparedness, the war readiness of Pakistan, how Pakistan can [00:16:30] actually show its dominance in the air [00:16:34] on on [00:16:35] the in the sea and on the land. as well, what do you [00:16:39] think about Pakistan's military capabilities that no one has [00:16:43] any doubt about it [00:16:44] anymore? mean [00:16:47] every military in the world has the same claims [00:16:51] that Pakistan has, but that there is a big difference, the difference [00:16:55] is proven capabilities like many militaries that never [00:16:59] have fought a war, but they say that we have these capabilities, but [00:17:02] Pakistan has one unique position that it has displayed [00:17:06] these... capabilities in the face of Indian [00:17:10] aggressions, even though Pakistan was not was not the [00:17:13] country which was the aggressor, it was the India and Pakistan [00:17:17] responded to it, so I think Pakistan has proven that, but I [00:17:21] think I am looking at this [00:17:24] new security arrangement [00:17:27] beyond the military capabilities, I think that it should go [00:17:31] beyond that and like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia [00:17:35] has have huge uh trade deficit, [00:17:38] pakistan has a good opportunity to plug that [00:17:42] gap and bring it instead of trade deficit, [00:17:46] make it trade surplus. similarly, pakistan and [00:17:50] turkey have the same situation, pakistan and turkey have been [00:17:53] collaborating on the defense side, they have been really [00:17:57] jointly manufacturing, pakistan is part of Kn project, in fact about 200 [00:18:01] Pakistani engineers are believed to be part the project where they [00:18:05] are developing the fifth generation. and fighter jet, so [00:18:08] Pakistan has that engagement, so certainly a country which has [00:18:12] proved its capability [00:18:15] through in war theaters and it has [00:18:18] the assets as well which have proved [00:18:22] like Chinese technology until not very [00:18:26] like distant past, many in the world [00:18:30] looked at it with lot of doubt, but Pakistan's [00:18:33] use of Chinese technology I think gave new [00:18:38] basically credibility to the Chinese technology, military technology as [00:18:42] well, I think that has also placed Pakistan a very unique [00:18:46] position where it is first because it being [00:18:50] able to intelligently use the assets that [00:18:54] it has against an adversary and secondly it [00:18:58] has it becomes key [00:19:01] candidate for any new technology that is coming out of [00:19:04] Chinese factories and Pakistan. being an ideal and [00:19:08] responsible player when it comes to use of such technologies, so I think [00:19:12] Pakistan has that edge when it comes to [00:19:16] using new technology and you know [00:19:19] different levels of technological [00:19:23] advancement in military science, [00:19:27] so I think that all combines and makes Pakistan a [00:19:31] unique case. Similarly, Turkey is also I think [00:19:35] a very unique player, Turkey... being part of NATO, even though [00:19:39] NATO has been kept out of this agreement, but Turkey has lot [00:19:43] of expertise also, especially in the defense sector, their [00:19:47] defense industry is emerging, it is becoming key player, their defense [00:19:51] exports are growing, Pakistan is also one their key customers [00:19:54] and I think these three countries working [00:19:58] together and working in the defense [00:20:01] development sector can also benefit immensely from [00:20:04] each other. Pakistan has the experience and aircraft [00:20:08] manufacturing, whether it is JF 17 or the way [00:20:11] Pakistan has rebuilt miraj three and [00:20:14] fives, I think that itself is success story, [00:20:18] because 50, 60 year olds aircraft and the way Pakistan [00:20:22] has befically reconditioned them is [00:20:26] amazing, so Pakistan has that expertise, so Pakistan also brings [00:20:30] its strength, but I think together Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and [00:20:34] Turkey can benefit from each other's. [00:20:37] capabilities as well as their insights [00:20:41] into the military science and overall security [00:20:44] environment, I think they can bring more stability to the region [00:20:48] and as I said I think there will be many other countries which will be more [00:20:52] than open to join it, just like Turkey announced today that other [00:20:56] countries in the region are also more than welcome to join, and I think these are very [00:20:59] good developments if other countries in the region also join, because this [00:21:03] brings more stability to the region, if the rivalries between the [00:21:07] gulf states go down and they become allies, so I think that [00:21:11] Pakistan being part of it and Pakistan being the sold nuclear power in the [00:21:15] club, it makes Pakistan very distinguished [00:21:18] member. [00:21:29] the joint defense agreement as a new framework for collective [00:21:33] security among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The [00:21:36] agrement strengthens collective deterence by presenting the combined strategic [00:21:40] way of all three states as a single [00:21:50] "the historic Makkka joint defense agreement is here, [00:21:54] well here is the question, what happens when three major [00:21:58] muslim states decide that the security of one is [00:22:02] the security of all. in Makkka al mukarrama, [00:22:05] pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have taken a [00:22:09] momentous step towards collective defense, ahead the [00:22:13] talks, information minister Ataullah tararer [00:22:16] shared that prime [00:22:17] minister Shabaz Sharif and the Pakistani delegation received..." a warm welcome in [00:22:21] jadda, describing it as reflection the enduring [00:22:24] brotherhood between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. now then at [00:22:28] al safa palace, prime minister Shahbas Sharif, Saudi crown prince Mohammad bin [00:22:32] Salman and Turkish President Rasib Tayyib Ardan [00:22:36] reviewed strategic relations, defense cooperation and [00:22:39] shared regional concerns. The center piece was the [00:22:43] signing the Makka joint defense agreement [00:22:47] built on long standing tires. Islamic [00:22:50] solidarity and growing strategic cooperation, its core [00:22:54] message is clear, an armed attack against any [00:22:58] one the three states will be regarded as an attack [00:23:01] against all three. In practical terms, [00:23:05] Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey will not be standing alone [00:23:09] now, but together as an iron wall. Any potential [00:23:13] aggressor must consider the combined strategic weight [00:23:17] of all three states. The agreement. will also [00:23:20] deepen defense cooperation and strengthen collective detenance [00:23:24] for Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The message is one [00:23:28] of unity, strength and a shared commitment to [00:23:31] peace, security and stability across the region [00:23:35] and [00:23:50] it stands on three principles that attack on one country would [00:23:54] be attacked on all countries of course, secondly [00:23:58] the GCC stability of course is is regarded [00:24:02] in this in this agreement and this is not a [00:24:05] pact agreement is binding by the way [00:24:09] thing of course on each country's pacts are not in third element in [00:24:13] this course the south asia element so as you [00:24:17] know of course post operation sindur pakistan has gained this international [00:24:21] momentum, this weightage which has come into [00:24:25] Pakistan where Pakistan is expended in influence not only in South [00:24:29] Asia but to the west Asia in this war between Iran [00:24:31] and Iran and the US and Israel Pakistan of [00:24:35] course is the primary mediator and of course is ingress of [00:24:39] course signing of defense agreement with Saudi [00:24:42] Arabia to and our forces actually deployed in [00:24:46] Saudi Arabia so this actually gives Pakistan lot more influence. [00:24:50] in the middle east, of course, in west Asia and in South [00:24:54] Asia, of course, we we need to understand, I think lot of our enemies [00:24:58] would be thinking twice of attacking us and of [00:25:01] course, and it's just not, [00:25:03] of course, lot of people have [00:25:04] been asking you, if Pakistan's attack by [00:25:08] Indians, what would the Saudies or Turkish do, and I always said of [00:25:11] course the Saudis and in the Turks would defend [00:25:15] Pakistan, Iranian [00:25:19] president posization [00:25:21] has said Tehran is ready for dialogue with the United States and Europe [00:25:25] but will not accept demands that compromise Iran's sovereignty or defense [00:25:29] capabilities. Speaking in comments carried by Iran's air [00:25:32] broadcaster [00:25:33] pasan defendant his government's decision to pursue negotiations saying the move is aimed [00:25:37] to protecting national interest and avoiding unnecessary [00:25:41] conflict. He rejected claims that his administration had pressured [00:25:44] Iran's leadership into talks saying major decisions were made in [00:25:48] coordination with the country's leader. and armed forces. [00:25:51] Zasian also criticized European countries saying that Iran has [00:25:55] reached understandings with European representatives during diplomatic efforts, [00:25:58] but that Europe ultimately failed to act independently. They...
