[00:10:26] Hello and welcome to unfold, I am in today's show we are going [00:10:30] to have two different segments, the first will primarily focus on the [00:10:33] trilateralization the defense cooperation between Pakistan, [00:10:37] Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Turkey as the three have [00:10:40] signed the joint defense agreement, [00:10:44] what is the significance of this particular agreement and also what are going to [00:10:47] be the implications as far as the wider regional security is concerned. [00:10:51] In the second segment we are going to talk about Pakistan. [00:10:55] authorities operation against the resurgence of [00:10:58] terrorism, especially in the wake the kabul takeover by the Afghan Taliban [00:11:02] back in 2021, we have seen Pakistan [00:11:05] authorities going through the intelligence based [00:11:09] operations uprooting the networks, [00:11:12] eliminating targets both within the [00:11:16] country as well as going kinatic with there are [00:11:19] safe heavens in Afghanistan as well, what is the [00:11:23] strategy the Pakistani? authority authorities at this point in time [00:11:27] will be delving deeper into that also. Let's [00:11:31] begin with the first segment of today's show. As I have already [00:11:35] mentioned, the trilateralization the defense cooperation when it [00:11:38] comes to Pakistan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Turkey. [00:11:42] We saw the three countries signed an [00:11:45] agreement, the joint defense [00:11:48] agreement. Um, now it [00:11:50] basically has the very important provision which [00:11:54] talks. of any armed attack against any these three [00:11:58] countries will be considered attack against all [00:12:02] three, what does that actually mean, what does that actually [00:12:05] signif and what are going to be the manifestations and the [00:12:09] implications of this particular provision also. [00:12:13] now going a little back in time, back in [00:12:16] 2025 we saw there was a signing [00:12:19] the mutual defense agreement [00:12:22] between kingdom of Saudi Arabia. and Pakistan [00:12:26] back in September 2025, is it the extension or [00:12:30] expansion from that particular agreement between kingdom of Saudi [00:12:34] Arabia and Pakistan, now we have seen the inclusion [00:12:38] of turkey. now given this situation that has [00:12:42] developed and unfolded over the last five months in the middle east [00:12:46] with the kind of threat that we have seen to the maritime roots, also [00:12:50] attacks on the energy infrastructure in the gulf, also [00:12:54] the kind of high hand as by certain elements over there, [00:12:57] most primarily when we talk about the war which is going on between [00:13:01] the US and Iran, also the Israeli factor in [00:13:05] that, amid all that, the timing of this agreement [00:13:09] is very crucial, what does that particularly signif as [00:13:12] well, what sort of a broader message is is sending [00:13:16] within the region and also globally will be trying to take the [00:13:20] perspective from Saudi Arabia, from Pakistan as well [00:13:23] as from Turkey. Also there are certain very [00:13:27] important questions which are related to this particular signing the [00:13:30] agreement, when we talk about the external guarantees [00:13:34] of security within the Middle Eastern region, is it the [00:13:38] diversification happening because it all dependent [00:13:41] on the United States of America given the conflict which is ongoing between Iran [00:13:45] and the US, are the regional countries taking the [00:13:48] responsibility their security now more [00:13:52] and also how do you we will be [00:13:56] trying to understand how certain [00:14:00] elements, for example when you talk about the Israeli factor when we talk about [00:14:03] Iran and also the United States of America, [00:14:07] how their possible reaction could be, we haven't seen any sort of an official [00:14:11] comment from the US, as of yet, neither we have seen [00:14:15] any sort of an official comment from the Israeli side, there has been a little bit of [00:14:19] hint when we talk about the Iranian side which on the face of [00:14:23] it has actually well. this particular signing the [00:14:27] agreement framing it with the Muslim Unity also [00:14:31] given the fact how the situation is developing in the middle east [00:14:34] visavy US and Iran, there is another [00:14:38] very pertinent question, whether this [00:14:42] particular collective deterrence is going evolve [00:14:46] into dialogue and more engagement, creating wider [00:14:50] regional security and stability. These are going to be the key [00:14:53] questions in today's. show for that we are honored to being joined by Dr. [00:14:57] Jamil Khan is a ambassador. Dr. Jamil Khan, thank you very much for being with [00:15:01] us on the show tonight, really appreciate that. [00:15:04] Also we are honored to being joined by Miss [00:15:08] Leann Jarens, she is a presenter at al arabia [00:15:11] English. Lee, thank you very much [00:15:13] for your time also for being with us on the show tonight, really appreciate that. [00:15:17] I'll begin the discussion with you, Lee, now [00:15:19] basically first of all give us an [00:15:23] understanding the Saudi perspective. how this particular agreement [00:15:27] is being seen and received within Saudi Arabia, [00:15:31] what does Saudi Arabia at the end the day get it? we know for fact, [00:15:35] there was already a mutual defense. agreement between Pakistan [00:15:39] and Saudi Arabia that was signed back in 2025, [00:15:42] so having already that agreement, why there was a [00:15:46] need, the saudis thought that they would try lateralize [00:15:50] it, [00:15:50] and what does the inclusion of turkey in this particular [00:15:54] agreement mean for [00:15:55] saudis? thank you so much [00:15:59] for having me on, yes, of course we see this historic agreement which was [00:16:03] signed yesterday between, as you said Saudi Arabia, Pakistan. [00:16:08] and and Turkey and one thing that they are saying is this [00:16:11] agreement is not an agreement targeted at any [00:16:15] other one country, so they're making that very clear. [00:16:19] this agreement right now, we don't have so many details about it, we know it [00:16:23] was signed in Mecca, we obviously know almost a year ago [00:16:27] um Saudi Arabia did sign another agreement with Pakistan, [00:16:31] but bringing Turkey in is also quite a significant moment [00:16:35] for this trilateral deal. because it it signals [00:16:39] the timing of things, it's a significant commitment between the [00:16:43] three big muslim power houses that we do see in the middle [00:16:47] east, and we must remember something, Turke is of [00:16:50] course also part the Middle East, so it's split between Europe [00:16:54] and the Middle East, so bringing Turkey and brings in also [00:16:57] a lot of military commitment, and [00:17:01] Turkey have been building drones, submarines, [00:17:04] ships, they have the second largest. in the [00:17:08] NATO alliance and also Turkey and [00:17:11] Pakistan border Iran, so is sending a [00:17:15] signal clearly to Iran that now [00:17:18] attack on one the three countries in this agreement is [00:17:22] attack on all countries, and we must remember it's [00:17:25] significant because as you mentioned it too, things in the region have [00:17:29] shifted over the last year and the last few months due [00:17:33] to the Iran war, we obviously had the... [00:17:37] west who was the soul guaranteeur of security in the middle east since [00:17:41] the first gold war, the first golf war, [00:17:44] apologies, and now we do see that there are [00:17:48] limitations to that security, and that has been highlighted over [00:17:52] the last few months, so the timing of this is also [00:17:55] imperative. right, so early, if we try to [00:17:58] take an analysis regarding us to what the Iranian reaction, there has been [00:18:02] a hint by the foreign minister, Mr. Abbas [00:18:05] Aragi. now, he's they've tried to frame [00:18:09] it from the lens of Muslim [00:18:12] unity, how how do you analyze [00:18:16] this particular reaction on the part the Iranians, because you have already [00:18:20] mentioned, it's a signal collectively from [00:18:23] Turkia, king of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan towards Iran as per [00:18:27] your understanding, so given that view of yours, how do [00:18:31] you analyze this reaction with the Iranian [00:18:32] side? it was an agreement signed [00:18:36] in Mecca, so there has been a lot of analysis and [00:18:40] lot of pointing towards the fact that this is a big [00:18:44] agreement that is focused on regional security, [00:18:48] so it doesn't add the US into the agreement, so [00:18:51] there has been a focus on the fact where it was signed and taking the religion [00:18:55] into consideration, but I think moving away from [00:18:59] that, this does send a signal to Iran and its [00:19:02] proxies that it really needs to look its policies and its [00:19:06] aggression towards it. neighbors, which we have seen since [00:19:10] February, since the US and Israeli first attacked [00:19:13] Iran, the aggression towards the golf neighbors is [00:19:17] something that has become absolutely apparent, so I [00:19:21] do think this cl sends a clear strong message more than anything [00:19:25] to Iran, yes they can try and frame it as part the [00:19:28] Muslim um access, but I i don't think that's [00:19:32] particularly exactly what this agreement is looking to do, [00:19:36] it's looking to warn a... that if it continues its [00:19:39] aggression towards neighbors, it now has [00:19:43] different security blanket it has to take [00:19:47] into consideration because Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey [00:19:50] are now a joint alliance, which is extremely important to [00:19:54] remember, and many analysts here in Saudi Arabia have told me this pact is [00:19:58] really important because once again it highlights that we're [00:20:02] regionalizing security in light of this war [00:20:06] with Iran, which is... also extremely important because remember, if [00:20:10] we've got these three countries who have joined this trilateral [00:20:13] agreement, it covers huge and vast geographical space [00:20:17] from east asia to the corners of Europe, and those really [00:20:21] strategic choke holds, babamenzem straight and of course the straight [00:20:25] of Homus, and we have seen Iran constantly try to [00:20:29] choke those straight holds in order to put economic [00:20:32] pressure on the Gulf countries to pressure the US [00:20:36] into finding a... dramatic offramp: [00:20:40] so that that brings us to very interesting [00:20:43] scenario, going little back in time, we [00:20:47] saw there was a mediation carried out by china when it came to [00:20:51] reproachma or reestablishment the diplomatic relations [00:20:54] between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran. One thing that [00:20:58] you [00:20:58] have just pointed out in your view regarding as to the kind of [00:21:02] acts in retaliation what the Iranians refer to [00:21:06] they have carried out during this conflict that is unfolding [00:21:09] against the US targeting certain [00:21:12] infrastructure and also those vessels [00:21:16] the gulf nations most particularly when we talk about kingdom of Saudi. [00:21:20] Arabia, but during this entire conflict we have seen [00:21:24] that segaciousness on the part the Saudis, [00:21:27] they they they try, they've tried their utmost not to be [00:21:31] dragged into this particular conflict which has been going on from almost more than [00:21:35] four five months between Iran and the US, having [00:21:39] said that, we do [00:21:42] understand [00:21:44] there, there must be, there might be some sort of friction despite [00:21:48] that reproochma between Iran. and Saudi Arabia having [00:21:51] said that, what brings Turkey into it? we we [00:21:55] haven't seen any sort of a friction as far as the bilateral [00:21:58] relationship between Turkey and Iran is concerned, and also when [00:22:02] we talk about Pakistan scenario, Pakistan has played a pivot role as a [00:22:06] mediator having equally good relations with Iran as well as the [00:22:10] US during this particular conflict, so how do you [00:22:14] analyze this entire, I mean situation as it [00:22:17] is, when you refer to again, uh that perhaps it [00:22:21] is a signal to Iran. It's very difficult [00:22:25] right now because we don't have the exact details the agreements, [00:22:28] so analysis is just what we are thinking at the [00:22:32] moment, but right now I think what's happening is we [00:22:36] see more and more that Iran is dealing [00:22:38] diplomatically with the Gulf countries with [00:22:42] Oman, we see they trying to reach that agreement with the straight [00:22:46] of Homus. Of course we've also seen Qatar involve. [00:22:50] in the negotiations too, and Pakistan has been a big player in [00:22:54] those negotiations. We know Saudi and Pakistan have close [00:22:58] ties, so my feeling is behind the scenes everybody is [00:23:02] working together to try to find an off ramp to [00:23:05] what's happening in the Middle East, because a prolonged [00:23:09] conflict will hurt the countries when it comes to [00:23:12] energy, economies, and what they're looking at right now [00:23:16] is as they try to reach this deal in the... countries at the [00:23:20] moment we're living in this no peace, no war situation, [00:23:24] it's almost a little bit of a stalemate, and I think what everyone's [00:23:28] looking to do is try to find an off-ramp in order to [00:23:32] find some kind of framework and able to be able [00:23:36] to work with Iran to reach a peace deal at some [00:23:40] point. We have been hearing that deal on the straight of homoz is [00:23:43] nearing, that deal is still not through yet, but we do know [00:23:47] that all the parties are working hard. an order for [00:23:51] that deal to be reached and to be agreed to by the United [00:23:55] States, because if Iran puts tools or service fees on the [00:23:59] straight of homose, we know that's something the US doesn't [00:24:02] necessarily want to um do deal with, and they [00:24:06] don't want to pay the tools, so we're trying to find an agreement on [00:24:09] that at the moment, but I think what's important to highlight is [00:24:13] Saudi Diplomats have been speaking here and said the deal is not [00:24:17] aimed to establish new military act. and it's [00:24:21] a based a collective defensive and deterrence [00:24:25] agreement, so I think adding Turkey in, which [00:24:28] has relationship with Iran, Pakistan [00:24:32] who's mediating, and Saudi Arabia, this could be a [00:24:35] real positive path to peace when we look at the countries [00:24:39] that are involved in this trilateral agreement, because there is [00:24:43] channels open to Iran through [00:24:46] Pakistan, the very important. [00:24:50] points that you have made, please stay with us, I'll come back to you for number of [00:24:54] other points also, I think we were joined, but I'll go back to the other [00:24:58] participant later during our conversation, coming back to you once [00:25:01] again, now okay, so [00:25:04] regarding Turkey, now Turkey on one [00:25:08] side happens to be the member of NATO, as for the [00:25:12] article five of NATO, the North Atlantic treaty [00:25:15] organization, the article five, now this [00:25:19] provision, which was pretty much part of that [00:25:22] mutual defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi [00:25:25] Arabia, that seems synonymous to the very article [00:25:29] five the NATO, right? so that collective defense. [00:25:33] now in this case, if any sort of [00:25:36] action that happens against any [00:25:40] these three countries, what could be the likely manifestations [00:25:44] of that? also, also associated with this [00:25:47] one is once, Turkey is the member [00:25:51] of NATO right, it is protected by [00:25:55] that article five the NATO as well, so why [00:25:59] would uh turkey go? and [00:26:02] become the part of this particular agreement given that it is [00:26:06] already producted by a bigger military [00:26:09] alliance? yes, this is a question that I have been [00:26:12] asking analysts myself here in in Saudi Arabia, because as you [00:26:16] say, Turke is of course part of NATO, the big European [00:26:20] defensive alliance, and now they have signed this [00:26:24] trilateral Mecca agreement, but I think a lot of it comes down [00:26:28] to, as I've said before, we seeing this real change in [00:26:32] security. urity in the Middle East, we're seeing instability [00:26:35] here at the moment, and I think many countries within the Middle [00:26:39] East are really rethinking their [00:26:43] agreement and security strategies, because as I said [00:26:46] before, the U.S. of course has proven that there is [00:26:50] some insufficiencies in what we've seen across the Gulf [00:26:54] region. I did speak to few military analysts yesterday and I [00:26:58] asked them this exact question on Turkey and NATO, will the... [00:27:02] effect Turkey's membership in NATO and they said NATO [00:27:06] is largely European, that's something that we must remember, it's a European [00:27:10] defense alliance, it's also defense alliance, so [00:27:14] it's very much along the same tracks of this agreement that we've seen [00:27:18] in Mecca, but once again Turkey is in [00:27:21] Europe, but also it's the eastern side [00:27:25] the Middle East, so we see Turkey now [00:27:28] becoming really more involved in Middle East fairs and that have [00:27:32] been so focused on Europe, so expanding, [00:27:36] um, that's what it's trying to do, expand its defense [00:27:39] capabilities, and many analysts in this region actually [00:27:43] don't foresee this as being a conflict at all for [00:27:46] Turkey, and I think that is something that we're looking at right now, [00:27:50] and you know also, I think US president Donald Trump is of course [00:27:54] come into power in the last second term of his [00:27:58] and and NATO's been really high on the agenda and we all [00:28:01] know. thing President Donald Trump has said time and time again is he [00:28:05] wants European countries to step up to pay more [00:28:09] for the defense, to secure their borders, to not completely [00:28:13] rely on the US. So when I look at this trilateral agreement, [00:28:17] I actually think it's something that President Donald Trump and [00:28:20] America might actually think this is a good [00:28:24] agreement because there have been speculation that [00:28:28] munitions are running low when it comes to US munitions due [00:28:31] to the... Iran war, so actually the US could see this [00:28:35] as a real positive step for regional [00:28:38] security. Right, that was exactly the [00:28:42] question that I was about to come to you for your understanding, [00:28:45] but you have already answered, so it was great having you once again in our [00:28:49] show tonight, Lee and Jarens presenter al arabia english, thank you very [00:28:53] much for taking time out for on fold tonight, really appreciate that, [00:28:57] and now we are honored to being joined by another participant, Dr. Furqan halit Yulchu, [00:29:01] his expert middle east. as Dr. Thank you very much for your time for being [00:29:05] with us on unfold tonight, we really appreciate that [00:29:08] question that I asked lay a short while [00:29:12] ago as well, the same question [00:29:14] to you, we know for fact there was a [00:29:18] mutual strategic mutual defense agreement between Pakistan and [00:29:21] Saudi Arabia that was signed back in 2025, at the same [00:29:25] time in know for fact the Turkey is the member of [00:29:29] NATO, it is well protected by the article of [00:29:32] NATO, the collective defense, if an armed attack happens [00:29:36] against one the members of NATO, it would be considered attack on the rest the members [00:29:40] of NATO, but similar sort of provision was the part of [00:29:44] that agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and now Turkey has been included into [00:29:48] it, so given that umbrella the protection under NATO is article [00:29:52] five, why was there a need felt by [00:29:56] Turkey to become the part of this trilateral agreement that gives [00:29:59] us the same provision the protection if any? armed attack against one [00:30:03] these happens, it would be considered against [00:30:06] all. [00:30:08] yeah, i think it's it [00:30:12] should be about a war that's been going on in the middle east for the [00:30:16] recent years, yeah, and this is Iran, United [00:30:19] States and Israel, [00:30:23] tripartite war, if if you want to call [00:30:25] it, as these actors are [00:30:28] attacking each other from time to time, [00:30:32] bombing the premises or bombing [00:30:36] auxiliary, maybe sometimes [00:30:40] partnering countries, sometimes logistics, sometimes [00:30:44] other means financially or otherwise, [00:30:47] these three countries are now in war for more [00:30:51] than almost two years and i think the [00:30:55] countries the region are now preparing for something that can [00:30:58] prevent at.
