[00:06:14] From the heart of South Asia to the cross roads of central Asia, from the turbulent middle east and [00:06:18] North Africa to the park corridors the west where narratives collide, perspectives [00:06:22] matter and stories connect. This is beyond borders and I am Omar Khalid [00:06:26] wall. During the course the show, as is the norm, we'll take you into a world which we consider [00:06:30] without borders or boundaries and discuss issues that are pertinent in this changing [00:06:34] 21st century scenario. We'll begin with the top stories the day or as we [00:06:37] call them, region [00:06:38] lines. [00:06:43] We start from the middle east where the hoothies have targeted civilian infrastructure in the kingdom of [00:06:47] Saudi Arabia, meanwhile Saudi Arabia has struck Huti targets in Yaman in [00:06:51] retaliation after 13 civilians were injured in Houti attacks on the Saudi [00:06:55] cities of Hamis, Masheid, Abha and [00:06:57] Taif. [00:07:03] Moving on, Pakistan TV global marks its first [00:07:06] anniversary of a transformation, completing year of expanded [00:07:10] programming, modernized presentation. and a stronger international [00:07:13] presence. the channel's digital reach has searched from 1.5 million to [00:07:17] 635.5 million views while it international [00:07:21] audience has grown from 9% to 60%. its [00:07:25] reporting has been sited internationally more than 150 [00:07:28] times. [00:07:33] finally, AI linked stocks have plungched worldwide after top AI [00:07:37] leaders have warned of potentially existential risks from the technology [00:07:41] rattling investor. evidence, the sell off comes amid growing [00:07:44] concerns over massive AI spending, rising debt and higher [00:07:48] global borrowing [00:07:50] costs. [00:07:58] now we'll begin of course with the middle east and north africa where a [00:08:02] dangerous new front is opening in the middle east, yemen's iran align [00:08:06] hoothies have launched another wave of missiles and drones towards the kingdom of Saudi [00:08:10] Arabia targeting king Khalid their base. and triggering emergency alerts across [00:08:14] several cities. 13 civilians have been reportedly wounded. [00:08:17] this escalation goes far beyond another cross border attack. the [00:08:21] hoothies have now also see strategic territory and islands [00:08:25] along yemen's red sea coast, strengthening their position near [00:08:29] Babal Mander, vital waterway carrying around 12% of global [00:08:32] trade. Saudi Arabia and Yemen's internationally recognized government are [00:08:36] responding to protect their territory and contain the hoothi advance. Raad [00:08:40] is also dealing with the closure of its east-west oil [00:08:43] pipeline following separate drone attack. this pipeline has [00:08:47] provided an important alternative to the largely blocked straight of her [00:08:50] moves. now with both major export routes under pressure, [00:08:54] oil prices have risen sharply and fears of a global supply [00:08:58] crisis are growing. diplomacy has also suffered with Gulf [00:09:01] Iran talks postponed, while more than 12500 Yemanies [00:09:05] have reportedly been displaced by the renewed fighting. now to discuss [00:09:09] that in more detail, we will be joined by two guests. In fact we have been [00:09:13] joined by two guests, let me introduce them to you one by one. We have [00:09:17] been joined by Dr. Fadi Hilani, he is a senior fellow at the National [00:09:21] Council of U.S. Arab Relations and of course senior fellow at [00:09:25] NCUSAR. John from Washington DC. Thank you very much father to have [00:09:28] joined us. We've also been joined by Dr. Nihar Chelik who is an [00:09:32] international relations expert and joins us from Istanbul. Thank you very much to [00:09:36] both of my guests to have joined us and of course I [00:09:40] hope we'll be having an interesting discussion to. course of this [00:09:43] interaction, I'll begin with you, Fadi, I'd like to [00:09:46] understand the objectives that the hoodis have [00:09:50] had under these recent skirmishes, what are they [00:09:54] trying to achieve in your point of you Fadi, by renewing missile [00:09:57] and drone attacks deep into the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, not the first time, but I'd like to understand [00:10:01] why, good evening first of all, [00:10:05] and thank you for having me, obviously the hethies [00:10:09] see that this is very good moment [00:10:13] uh for them to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia [00:10:17] given the US-Iran conflict and the alignment between the Huutis [00:10:20] and Iran uh so these attacks number one [00:10:24] uh gives them the uh uh the target that [00:10:28] they want in return of stopping and seeing [00:10:31] seasing their attacks from Saudi Arabia to lift as they [00:10:35] say it's blockade on their airports and the ports [00:10:39] and of course uh the indirect [00:10:43] result of this which we can see from the Iranian [00:10:46] perspective is that it gives thehran control over another [00:10:50] chuck point which is babel mandab uh obviously the strain in this [00:10:55] straight of hermus over the last few months because the conflict [00:10:58] between the Iran and the US has put pressure on [00:11:02] global economy, but also with another truck point being [00:11:06] now under the influence, I will say of [00:11:09] Iran, now we can see another of [00:11:13] course escalation possibly coming ahead. I'm not talking here [00:11:17] about the military perspective only, but also adding extra pressure [00:11:20] on the global economy, so that changes the calculus in the [00:11:24] region. and that can be seen as given giving Iran [00:11:28] more influence over the Gulf country and possibly another [00:11:32] bargaining chip when it sits on the table, if it sits on the table with the [00:11:36] United States. All right, so you say another bargaining chip, let's see if [00:11:40] that is really the case. Nihat, coming to you, the hutis [00:11:43] control most of as far as the reports are concerned, most of [00:11:47] Yamen's western coast and several islands, how far [00:11:51] away are they from controlling all of Babel Mandab? [00:11:56] uh well at the moment they also control the perim island which [00:12:00] is a strategic location in the middle the babel [00:12:03] mandab and i agree with my colleague the timing is [00:12:07] very important and when Saudi Arabia and other gulf [00:12:10] countries busy in the east due to the conflict with [00:12:14] uh Iran ongoing US Iran conflict and they have deployed their [00:12:18] military resources to that area to counter [00:12:21] against ballistic missiles and drone. [00:12:25] now Iran even if indirectly [00:12:29] because Iran denies its involvement in the yemen civil war, but [00:12:33] there are also media reports that members the IRGC are [00:12:37] flowing to Yeman to fight on the side the [00:12:40] hoothies, so Iran managed even [00:12:44] if indirectly open a new front against the US allies [00:12:48] in the region and Saudi Arabia being the prime [00:12:50] target. I also want to point out [00:12:55] to major pattern change, as you remember the mecca defense pact [00:12:59] was signed on August 7 this years and [00:13:02] before that we have witnessed attacks from Iran [00:13:06] ballistic missils targeting the military bases in Saudi Arabia and [00:13:10] also other gulf countries, but after the McDefense pact was signed, [00:13:14] this time we don't see, I at least based on my observation, they do [00:13:18] not directly come from Iran, they cannot be attributed to [00:13:22] Iran at present, so Iran opened two [00:13:25] fronts we can say by using its allie or proxy [00:13:29] in Iraq, the katiib hizbullah, [00:13:33] which actually is responsible for the pipeline attack [00:13:36] which led to end led to stopping the [00:13:40] oil flow in the east west pipeline because pumping station was [00:13:44] hit, it also hit Saudi Arabia from the west from [00:13:47] Yemen, but at present - given [00:13:51] the situation based on the official statements, [00:13:55] from the is we can say that they do not want to [00:13:59] extend the front too much, they only want to target Saudi [00:14:02] Arabia, they will target dy ships passing through the [00:14:06] balbel mandab and they will ignore [00:14:08] other countries vessels, so they do not want [00:14:12] to build a large front against them with their actions, they [00:14:16] will only target saudi vessels, as you may [00:14:20] remember in 2023 the US [00:14:23] started operation. uh prosperity [00:14:27] guardian, but with the seas fire in 2025 it also [00:14:31] ended, this year august 14th, Saudi [00:14:35] Arabia [00:14:36] and 14 other countries like Turkia, Qatar, [00:14:40] Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Oman and [00:14:43] Egypt, they formed the uh the Red [00:14:47] Sea defense pac defense alliance, [00:14:51] so this body now if the Hus attacks continue a larger [00:14:55] scale, this body may become may become more [00:14:58] operational, but of course at [00:15:01] the end it will depend on how countries will be willing to deploy their [00:15:04] naval resources for a joint operation in the red sea [00:15:08] against, that's something we wait and [00:15:12] see. all right, all right, well ladies and gentlemen, as you can very [00:15:16] well see through my first two questions that i have [00:15:20] asked fadi and nihad, mean the understanding that we are [00:15:23] getting is... a) the alignment the hutis [00:15:27] and what they want to achieve through this and how the [00:15:31] kingdom of Saudi Arabia needs to what it needs to do and how it can you [00:15:35] know safeguard the interest the people and its territory as [00:15:39] well, and that is the question I'm going to ask fadi right now. Fadhi, I'd like to [00:15:42] understand how in your point of few, can the [00:15:46] kingdom of Saudi Arabia protect its civilians, its [00:15:49] territory a manner that does not [00:15:52] escalate this current [00:15:54] conflict? That's a very important question, [00:15:58] and I think Riyadh is currently thinking [00:16:01] about what military or political options it needs [00:16:05] to consider before it moves forward. uh we can see that [00:16:08] even riad restrained from responding [00:16:11] militarily uh to the uh Iraqi militia [00:16:15] backed by Iran that attacked the uh the [00:16:18] east-west uh pipeline uh so very [00:16:22] much I think the calculus in Saudi Arabia is very very [00:16:26] careful very strategic uh Saudi Arabia uh apparently [00:16:30] doesn't want to get involved a war uh which is waged [00:16:34] by by by Washington uh we know that the capitals in [00:16:38] general have been very careful in advising President Trump [00:16:42] that there should be diplomatic solution uh because [00:16:45] the the the heavy weight of this war and the bill [00:16:49] possibly the economy has been paid very much [00:16:53] by the gulf countries uh so [00:16:57] Saudi Arabia is a front of two really hard [00:17:01] options, it has either to move forward and [00:17:04] respond militarily to the houties or even to the Iran [00:17:08] backed militia in Iraq and that is going escalate [00:17:12] things further in the region and possibly we will find [00:17:16] that the US-Iran conflict is no more a war [00:17:20] between Washington and Tehran as much as it becomes uh [00:17:23] evolves to regional war and that is something neither Riyadh [00:17:27] nor the other gulf capitals to my understanding want to be [00:17:31] in or it has to be moving forward [00:17:34] to coordinate its [00:17:37] with other capitals and here we can think very much [00:17:41] about Pakistan of course and Turkey who [00:17:44] are part the Mecca Pact and also Egypt which [00:17:48] is very much another important capital in the [00:17:52] region and that is possibly why uh Prince Muhammad bin [00:17:56] Salman is now in Cairo trying to have some [00:18:00] aligned perspectives with with President CC so it's [00:18:03] very clear that Saudi Arabia doesn't want [00:18:07] escalate any further, it's trying to calculate its [00:18:11] response, in other words, even when it's striking back [00:18:15] the hotis, riad thinks that its response [00:18:19] has to be very measured in order to contain the [00:18:22] hotis, but at the same time not to move towards military [00:18:26] escalation, which is something neither nor other gulf capitals want [00:18:30] to see. it's obviously also from the United States [00:18:33] perspective, not in the interest of everyb of everyone in the region. [00:18:38] and also not in the interest of Washington [00:18:40] escalate or get involved with military escalation before [00:18:44] the midterm elections. Obviously President Trump is trying to [00:18:48] deescalate with Tehran, trying to send the message that we [00:18:52] are trying to apply [00:18:55] military and economy pressure, but we are not [00:18:59] willing to go to an all-out war again as the first 40 days of this [00:19:03] war, so the calculus is is very measured, it's [00:19:07] very... and I think Saudi is very much willing [00:19:10] to respond militarily, but not in a way [00:19:14] escalate further [00:19:16] in the region and at the same time send message that it's [00:19:19] negotiating not from a weak but from very strong [00:19:22] position. The calculus is measured, but let's see for how long it [00:19:26] remains measured, I hope it does, because that is in the interest of all [00:19:30] the [00:19:31] you know the countries in the region concern. Nihart coming to you, I'd like to understand [00:19:35] if you look at the battle point. or the conflict points, let's put it that [00:19:39] way, whether it be tais or in Marib, do you [00:19:43] feel there is certain importance that is [00:19:45] attached as far as Yamen's political and [00:19:49] military future is concerned? of [00:19:53] course, is the first of all, maybe I should present a brief picture the [00:19:57] situation, the nation's capital, Sena is [00:20:01] currently under the control the his and [00:20:04] the UN-backed government of Yeman. is [00:20:08] using Eden as its provisional capital [00:20:12] and Hi forces last week captured the port of [00:20:16] moka and perim island as I mentioned and these are [00:20:19] strategic chock points controlling the Babel Mandep [00:20:23] addition but to them there are they have been [00:20:26] advancing and at that point Marib is important it is [00:20:30] located east of Mocca at the [00:20:34] central part of northwestern. and it's [00:20:38] important for its oil and natural gas reserves [00:20:42] and being the center of energy sector in in yeman. [00:20:45] addition we have tas. [00:20:50] which is north the present capital the UN back [00:20:53] government, which is a strategic location controlling the roots [00:20:57] and if the manage to [00:21:00] capture these points, think the oil renew and also [00:21:04] the political message, showing their strong [00:21:08] strength to the UN back government, and [00:21:12] this could be watershed moment in the Yemani civil [00:21:16] war, in my opinion, in the coming weeks, if the advance continues, [00:21:20] "I think we will have better picture the [00:21:23] situation. All right, another important player [00:21:27] in all of this fadhi is the United States of America, now [00:21:30] although Washington has more or less [00:21:34] refused to be part of this conflict [00:21:37] directly, but of course it might be providing assistance of some kind to the [00:21:41] kingdom of Saudi Arabia, whether it be [00:21:45] in intelligence sector or others. In your point of [00:21:48] view, what assistance? is the kingdom of Saudi Arabia expecting [00:21:52] from the US and what will it [00:21:53] get? right, [00:21:57] so yes, there is an understanding from the United States [00:22:01] that this escalation between the his [00:22:05] in Yemen and Saudi Arabia is very much a [00:22:08] consequence of its war, the United States war against [00:22:12] Iran, so while President Trump doesn't want to [00:22:16] uh get involved militarily again because we are... [00:22:20] ahead of midterm elections here in in in in the United States, [00:22:24] but at the same time uh uh Washington wants [00:22:27] to show alignment with its partners in the region very much [00:22:31] with Saudi Arabia here in this case [00:22:34] uh so this is why while the message from Washington that we are [00:22:38] not going to [00:22:39] uh uh open another frontuh with the Houties uh in this conflict with [00:22:43] Iran but we are committed to work with our [00:22:47] partners and this is why Stcom uh for example, has [00:22:51] sent more than 100 military [00:22:53] advisors to discuss the situation with the military [00:22:57] leadership in Riyadh, for example, and also we [00:23:01] know that the US is sharing intelligence with with the [00:23:05] Saudi uh leadership so that they can target [00:23:09] specific targets the huties in Yemen, so [00:23:13] while there is no direct military involvement from the United [00:23:17] States, but there is much coordination and [00:23:20] collaboration when it comes to giving [00:23:23] advice, sharing military expertise and also sharing [00:23:27] intelligence and information with the saudi leadership, so the United [00:23:31] States is involved of course, but it's indirectly involved in that [00:23:34] situation. however, the [00:23:38] military, direct military involvement with the Hithis is something that [00:23:42] Washington doesn't want for two reasons. number one, it thinks [00:23:46] that a front the American [00:23:50] take politics, it's not going to look very good to President Trump to get [00:23:54] involved in military confrontation with the Houthies, [00:23:57] especially that, as President Trump said, he received a [00:24:01] clear message from the Houthies that they are not going to target military interests [00:24:05] or even military ships in the red sea. Number two, there is an [00:24:09] understanding that the Hithis at this time are going to [00:24:13] try to contain their targets, not to [00:24:16] actually uh hit any kind of uh... us [00:24:20] military bases or interests within the Gulf, so that is [00:24:24] something which the United States is very much interested in [00:24:27] containing and not going to military escalation, neither with [00:24:31] Tahran nor even with the Hothis in Yemen, at this time [00:24:35] when President Trump domestically is is facing [00:24:39] huge challenge from of course the Americans [00:24:43] who are saying that because of of this war they are [00:24:46] paying higher energy prices and that this could of [00:24:50] course impact the chances the republican party ahead the [00:24:54] midterm elections, so all of this is within kind [00:24:58] of calculated measures the United States want to take [00:25:01] before the midterm escalation, no military escalation, but at the [00:25:05] same time of course not to send the [00:25:09] message to Iran or the hoothies that [00:25:12] the US is letting go with [00:25:15] its partners in the region, talking here about Saudi Arabia of course, [00:25:20] see what happens, the next couple of days are extremely crucial in [00:25:22] this regard. thank you so very much dr. fadhi hilani to have joined us and to have given us your valid [00:25:26] input. coming to you, Nihar, this is my last question [00:25:30] to you as well. the United Nations Security Council is meeting [00:25:33] today to discuss the situation in Babel Mandab. what [00:25:37] kind of response should the countries that form [00:25:41] the UNSC now give to the hoothis in your point of [00:25:45] view or will they give any reaction? because we also know that there is humanitarian angle [00:25:49] to that. more than 12500 Yemanies have as [00:25:53] per the reports the UN been displaced so [00:25:55] far uh from the UNSC if [00:25:59] we look at the past resolutions we see that they condemned. attacks, houti [00:26:03] attacks on shipping [00:26:05] and they ask the hooties to stop their attacks, but apart from that, [00:26:09] I don't expect much, as I mentioned, if the [00:26:13] United States is not going to uh launch a campaign, which my colleague [00:26:17] mentioned in the light of domestic political developments in the [00:26:20] US, it is not much willing to do [00:26:24] so, Saudi Arabia may uh, if things [00:26:27] got out of control and escalation continues, Saudi Arabia may return [00:26:31] to its forces and may form a coalition the willing [00:26:35] against hooties to ensure that [00:26:39] maritime shipping is unrestricted [00:26:43] in in the balble mandev [00:26:45] straight, but apart from that i don't [00:26:49] expect much from the UNSC because we may have russia and other [00:26:52] countries in the UNSC may object a military [00:26:56] intervention, but the humanitarian aspect is you [00:27:00] mentioned with new more than... 100 thous people [00:27:03] internally displaced in yeman requires an urgent [00:27:06] action. in this respect, international red [00:27:10] cross and international red creant, they can set up [00:27:14] tent camps as the temperatures in the region are about to fall in [00:27:18] the coming weeks with the fall season coming [00:27:22] and tensities and other measures to [00:27:26] provide basic needs to the internally displaced people such as [00:27:29] shelter, food, water and healthcare. should be [00:27:33] arranged and in this respect, I think, rather than the military aspects the [00:27:37] conflict, regional countries can play a much bigger role by [00:27:40] diverting their donations in kind and cash to the official [00:27:44] UN back government of Yemen and [00:27:48] cooperating with the UN [00:27:50] bodies. Chalik, thank you so very much to have joined us [00:27:54] from Istanbul and to have given us your eminent point of view as far as [00:27:58] this crisis that is also developing alongside the [00:28:01] Iran. us conflict as we speak, let's hope for the best, let's hope better [00:28:05] sense prevails, let's hope some kind of a positive tangent or result comes [00:28:09] from this very conflict that has begun and is of [00:28:13] course aggravating the already 10 situation in the middle east, [00:28:17] let's see what the UNSC has to do today in its meeting. let's take [00:28:21] you now to South [00:28:22] Asia.
