[00:04:12] of [00:04:21] of [00:04:41] of [00:05:05] of [00:08:50] like UNICEF is so crucial to us, because they have [00:08:54] tremendous programs, tremendous understanding of how to make [00:08:57] difference in these particular areas with newborns [00:09:01] and maternity [00:11:15] Hello and welcome to the news room with some today we're going to take a look at the important [00:11:18] developments taking place starting off with the situation in the middle east with the [00:11:22] focus on what is happening between Saudi Arabia. and the rebels [00:11:26] in Yemen and also those emerging from within Iraq, it's important to [00:11:29] see what really is going on as part of this front [00:11:33] that has opened up at the middle east least caused huge concerns for the already [00:11:37] ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, but also [00:11:41] in terms of what will be the likely response coming in from Saudi [00:11:45] Arabia that has vowed for a firm response to Houti attacks [00:11:48] and advancements well into uh the areas close to [00:11:52] Bauble Mundop and of course with the attacks. that they have made against Saudi [00:11:56] Arabia and its maritime blockaid. It's important also to know that there [00:12:00] were a comprehensive um area that was covered in terms [00:12:04] of security alerts uh within Saudi Arabia, including [00:12:07] Macca, and while those were lifted pretty quickly, it was of [00:12:11] course cause for concern as to what really raised the alarm bells and how [00:12:15] exactly that situation will be handled by Saudi Arabia and [00:12:19] what really will be the way forward. We've also seen Saudi Arabia meet with other [00:12:23] countries including Egypt also. Of course calls for um [00:12:26] more action coming in from the United States have also been put forward, but so [00:12:30] far the United States is hesitant to enter into this all [00:12:34] out and has of course committed itself to providing [00:12:38] intelligence but refraining from moving in more than that, but what does [00:12:42] that mean in of course the ways in which it's going to affect this developing [00:12:45] situation, but also in terms the United States own [00:12:49] relationship with the countries involved and then of course how it then [00:12:52] impacts the situation between Iran and the... United States next segment [00:12:56] we're going to take a look at what is happening with regards to [00:13:00] what the US and particularly its defense forces are [00:13:03] facing as result the kind of spending that has been seen as part the [00:13:07] war against Iran and it seems that from [00:13:11] about 33 billion dollars that were spent on the war so [00:13:15] far about 22 billion of those has been spent on [00:13:19] munitions alone and it seems that there is huge aspect of strategic [00:13:22] stock bds up being less for the United States and of course the [00:13:26] ways in which it's going to respond will be important to see how [00:13:30] exactly defense forces and manufacturing companies are actually going to cop [00:13:34] up. The defense sectory of course is pushing for increasing of [00:13:38] weapon production, but what does that mean in terms of how exactly [00:13:42] this can actually be delivered and what really will be the response and [00:13:45] impact on Iran? And lastly we're also going to be taking [00:13:49] a look at the very important situation in terms the [00:13:53] developing and ongoing. genocide in Gaza and the West Bank and it [00:13:57] seems that uh previously of course the UK had [00:14:01] not been vocal about their support for Gaza [00:14:04] and of course with the new prime minister coming in there were mixed views about [00:14:08] what it is that he's going to do and the kind of stons that he's going to take, but it [00:14:12] seems that he has stepped up in terms of [00:14:15] outrightly condemming what's going on in Gaza and talking [00:14:19] about the support for Gaza and of course has also um [00:14:23] come forward with boycot. for certain goods being um [00:14:27] imported from Israel and it's important to see what really will [00:14:31] be the move forward in this regard, how it affects UK's relationship [00:14:35] with Israel and will the UK actually go so far as [00:14:38] calling what is happening in Gaza genocide that so far [00:14:42] it hasn't still, so we're going to take a look at that at the end [00:14:46] the show. to start off with what is in the middle east, we've been joined by [00:14:50] professor Lazlow Chedman who's professor at the University of Budapest and [00:14:53] senior fellow at Hungarian Institute of International [00:14:57] Affairs. We've also been joined with Dr. Matthew Mohammed Ferzani who is [00:15:00] professor and chair of history at the northeastern Illunai [00:15:04] University. Thank you very much gentlemen for being part the show today. Dr. Matthew, [00:15:08] let me begin with you. When we see what is happening in Saudi Arabia [00:15:12] and of course with the Huti rebels advancements increasing. We're hearing [00:15:15] from Saudi Arabia that they're going to be responding firmly to the [00:15:19] advancements that have been made. But what does that mean in terms of [00:15:23] how far Saudi Arabia is going to? take this given of course that [00:15:27] any response coming in in terms [00:15:30] the level or intensity that perhaps is being said in [00:15:34] rhetoric will result in an all-out war, but given the... situation [00:15:38] at the moment, the kind of advancements and attacks that have been made so far and [00:15:42] with of course the areas around babal mandab also being [00:15:45] secured by the hooti rebels, what does that mean in terms the very [00:15:49] real possibility of that actually [00:15:51] happening? well, one the things that we need [00:15:55] to take note of immediately is that Saudi Arabia [00:15:59] in its decades long history since its [00:16:02] inception and sovereignty is that it [00:16:06] has never... [00:16:07] faced a challenge as [00:16:08] it is challenging being challenged right now by the hoothis in Yemen, [00:16:12] that's very important to note, that means that historically it hasn't had the [00:16:16] opportunity to test to see if it can defense itself [00:16:20] without the help of others and also it [00:16:23] means that it puts Saudi Arabia a very [00:16:27] difficult situation because it does have access to the [00:16:31] Persian gulf, hence its oil has to go [00:16:34] through straight of Hormus which is blocked by Iran. and [00:16:38] then it does have access to the Red Sea, which means [00:16:42] it needs for its ships to go through Babel Mandab, as you [00:16:45] mentioned, the Sweez is open and will be open for the time [00:16:49] being, so all these things we are in uncharted [00:16:53] territory right now for crown prince [00:16:57] bin Salman right now, what it means for Iran is [00:17:00] that Iran had said from before that it would [00:17:04] ask its hoothi allies in [00:17:07] Yemen to do anything to help [00:17:11] Iranians in their fight against the Americans and [00:17:15] essentially the Israelis since February 28th, and this [00:17:19] rhetoric is not new, this goes back many, many [00:17:22] years as the Iranians were helping the Shiites [00:17:26] and the Houtis in Yemen, so historically that's been [00:17:30] going on for at least 20 some of years, it's nothing new, [00:17:33] but because the American Israeli war that... had [00:17:37] started on February 28th, now we're a very realistic [00:17:41] situation uh, if we can say um that [00:17:45] Saudi Arabia has to make decision to come down really hard [00:17:48] and respond to the [00:17:52] destruction of its oil, the 750 mile oil pipe [00:17:56] that was going to the Red Sea, which is its only outlet [00:18:00] to get its oil out, if they don't respond then it [00:18:04] would be anybody's guess how the next round of [00:18:07] fighting from Hutis against the Saudis would turn out, [00:18:11] so I'm guessing that um Saudi Arabia would [00:18:15] have to respond hard, but at the same time it cannot [00:18:19] do this by itself, it's going to have to need [00:18:21] to ask for allies and that's where [00:18:25] the Mecca agreement, the defense pact that was recently signed [00:18:29] by Pakistan by Turkey and by Saudi [00:18:32] Arabia, we just have to see what these other nations would decide and whether [00:18:36] or not if someone would ask them to come uh to [00:18:40] help in some shape or fashion, which puts [00:18:43] everything under extreme [00:18:47] um difficulty and challenge for everybody if anybody wants this war to be [00:18:51] over anytime soon. right, professor [00:18:55] lasl, when we're looking at these developments taking place, there is of course [00:18:59] lot of concern as to how um Saudi Arabia will respond, but [00:19:03] also how other countries are going to be responding to it, there is... [00:19:07] of course uh what Saudi Arabia looks towards for [00:19:11] support from the United States and while it has committed to [00:19:15] supporting in terms of intelligence sharing it hasn't really of course [00:19:19] stepped up in terms of any um more active involvement perhaps [00:19:22] in the situation and while that may be of course understandable but [00:19:26] what really do you think is the current stance that the US is [00:19:30] taking and what is it that it's likely going to take if the situation [00:19:34] worsens? thanks for having me [00:19:38] invited? yeah, that's a very good point. i think at this point the [00:19:41] United States told that there is an [00:19:45] existing cease fire between the United States and the Houti [00:19:49] movement, and it rejected to enter in the war. however, [00:19:53] it can change in the upcoming days depending on [00:19:56] the situation, unfolding situation in [00:20:00] the Yemani crisis, and especially I would expect that in the [00:20:04] upcoming days there's going to be more escalation. to be seen [00:20:08] in this conflict, especially as professor mentioned [00:20:12] that Saudi Arabia will respond and and [00:20:16] definitely it will going escalate uh the [00:20:18] crisis and and at [00:20:21] the you know that Saudi is criticizing with other Gulf states, the [00:20:25] United States that the Washington reluctant to [00:20:28] defend them, especially from the Iranian uh [00:20:32] drone and rock missilees attacks and here we have another [00:20:36] conflict uh which definitely Saudi Arabia would like [00:20:39] escape from, the same case is for Washington, I [00:20:43] think, especially getting closer to the midterm [00:20:46] elections, with increasing uh... [00:20:50] prices in the the United States, I [00:20:53] think the hoouti escalation is not a good [00:20:57] opportunity to implement the exit strategy the Trump [00:21:00] administration, so definitely in the upcoming days US [00:21:03] position can change a bit depending on the [00:21:07] situation. Right, Dr. Matthew, [00:21:11] the situation of course between the US and Iran is still [00:21:14] continuing, and while there may be hopes of course for the two [00:21:18] sides to get on the negotiating tables. so far we haven't seen that happening, what [00:21:22] is the situation between Saudi Arabia and the rubbles do [00:21:26] for the situation, how does it embalden Iran's position [00:21:30] if at all, and what will any sort of action coming in from Saudi [00:21:33] Arabia due to the USS's position and the kind of [00:21:37] actions it's willing to take in the middle [00:21:39] east? well, as you [00:21:42] know, the bricks nations and their invited guests [00:21:45] nation guests that were in New Delhi last [00:21:49] week, "there was a lot of talk between [00:21:53] Persian Golf Arab countries and Iran and the plan was [00:21:57] for all them to meet the Persian Golf Arab states and Iran to [00:22:00] meet being hosted by Oman to work out [00:22:04] the details of how it would be for this straight to be open [00:22:08] and controlled by Oman from the south and Iran from the north [00:22:12] and apparently Saudi Arabia due to the difficulties that is [00:22:15] having with his Yemini neighbors to the [00:22:18] south" had to cancel and ask for an extension of [00:22:22] time, which the Omanis have abided by, [00:22:26] because they want this agreement to be signed apparently by all [00:22:30] the person, golf arab states including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, [00:22:33] Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar and [00:22:37] Emarat, so in that [00:22:39] sense, Iranians right now [00:22:43] are a good position because apparently they have convinced and they have come [00:22:47] to a understanding with the Omanis and how [00:22:50] to control the flow of oil, however the [00:22:54] United States keeps objecting to any kind of [00:22:58] arrangement that would be made, [00:23:02] and the public is not yet preview to the details of that. As far as [00:23:06] Saudi Arabia is concerned, as I mentioned earlier and our other [00:23:10] guest is agreeing, Saudi Arabia because it's [00:23:13] been sucked into this war with with [00:23:17] Yemen and Hutis, whether... the Iranians are helping or not, [00:23:21] but like with in all likelihood Iran is helping with [00:23:25] a variety of ways, they're going to have to address this [00:23:28] situation, and I don't see any other way to address the [00:23:32] situation militarily other than going and making a [00:23:36] deal with other Persian gulf states with [00:23:39] Iran and opening the straight and putting an end to this [00:23:43] absolutely nonsensical war that started for no [00:23:46] reason, right? um... Professor [00:23:50] Laslu, when we're looking at the which Bobble Mandap is [00:23:54] getting affected, and of course the straight of removes is of [00:23:57] course something that has been uncertain since quite a few [00:24:01] months now and since the beginning the conflict, when we look [00:24:04] at the kind of impact that the situation Bubble Bundab has also [00:24:08] created and also with the very important east-west pipeline of [00:24:12] Saudi Arabia being affected, what does that mean in [00:24:15] terms [00:24:17] the global oil supply that is affected, but not just... for Saudi Arabia, for [00:24:21] the rest the Middle East and the world indeed, the ways in which this is [00:24:24] impacting different countries, how do you think that they're going to respond given that their [00:24:28] stakes are also high in this situation? and that's a very [00:24:32] good question, because it's not just about Saudi Arabia, but for the [00:24:36] United Arab Emirates, which is a competitor the Saudis [00:24:40] especially in the Yemen, the last couple of months, but [00:24:44] this conflict can bring the two countries together, because for [00:24:48] instance Saudi Arabia impacted by the eastwest pipeline and the yambu [00:24:52] port which today stopped oil loading and oil [00:24:55] shipment, but on the other hand, baubel mandab is still [00:24:59] open at the moment and we are unsure about the [00:25:02] future of whether the hooties would like to [00:25:06] disrupt the the freedom of navigation there, but for the United [00:25:10] Arab Emirates, more the port infrastructure [00:25:13] matters, and especially as the hoot is getting [00:25:16] closer to the local allies are... [00:25:20] movements in close to the balm [00:25:23] mandab, that's very interesting that it can bring together [00:25:27] several states and cooperate on the hoot [00:25:30] issues, because probably today they they will see it [00:25:34] as a common enemy, this is true for Egypt as [00:25:37] well, especially there is an unfortunately [00:25:41] an opportunity to decrease the suas canal income for [00:25:45] Egypt which is disastrous for Egypt's economy, so that's [00:25:49] why muhammad b Salman today, the chrome prince of Saudi [00:25:52] Arabia, had a meeting with Abdul Fattah Sis [00:25:56] in Egypt, and even there are many talks that [00:26:00] probably Israel can join - the war, [00:26:03] which is very sensitive issue of course for the Saudis, [00:26:07] because they wouldn't like to see themselves part of [00:26:10] same war against the movement, but however, there is [00:26:14] a common security challenge for all the states mentioned [00:26:18] here. right, and professor lasto, [00:26:21] the maritime coalition that was proposed by [00:26:25] Saudi Arabia did get some good responses initially, but given the current [00:26:29] situation, do you think that any tangible action will be? [00:26:32] collectively in terms of any maritime [00:26:35] defense? now definitely that's very [00:26:39] interesting as today, united arab emirates is not part of [00:26:43] this, and as it was said that there is the mecca [00:26:46] agreement as well, so Saudi is expecting other countries to [00:26:50] join, but what really does it mean in reality? this is a [00:26:53] question, because until today that the hoouti is just attacking the [00:26:57] Saudi ships, however not disrupting [00:27:01] today the... other shipment movements and i [00:27:05] think hootis have their own strategic calculation [00:27:09] and they probably would like to see the balbel mandab [00:27:12] open for the upcoming months, of course it depends [00:27:15] on hormos and iran as well, but with their own [00:27:19] strategic calculations, probably they are just playing a long-term [00:27:23] game uh to be at the most important stakeholder in [00:27:27] the balbel mandab and definitely this is another [00:27:31] situation so if port infrastructure is going to be attacked, [00:27:35] definitely other countries can join [00:27:38] as well, especially to defend the maritime [00:27:42] shipping roots, because it's not just about Saudi [00:27:45] Arabia, but about Oman and other countries, but Toman [00:27:49] definitely is more neutral in the Middle East than [00:27:52] others. Right, thank you very much, professor Lasl Chichman for [00:27:56] joining us and being a part the show. Dr. Matthew, when we're looking at [00:28:00] the situation, especially with the... kind of elements [00:28:04] also existing within Iraq, how do you think that the governments in [00:28:07] both Iraq and Yemen are going to be responding to the situation, of course [00:28:11] Yemen has talked about increased response, of course it has acted [00:28:15] in ways against the Huti rebels as well, but [00:28:18] how how effective do you think these responses will be and [00:28:22] what will be Saudi Arabia's action or support that it [00:28:26] can extend in order to ensure that that does eventually happen and with [00:28:30] Iraq, where do you think that the government? [00:28:32] would stand? well, the [00:28:35] responses, would have to be quite measured, [00:28:39] but at the same time, quite decisive, if Saudi Arabia [00:28:43] wants to [00:28:44] win this situation, and we just [00:28:46] have to wait and see what had what can happen. as far as [00:28:50] Iraq is concerned, apparently the latest attacks, some them [00:28:54] were launched from inside, the sovereign territory [00:28:58] of Iraq, and that puts Iraq a very difficult situation, [00:29:02] because... "United States is not in war with Iraq, it's in war with Iran, [00:29:05] but at the same time Iran has incredible influence [00:29:09] visavy its friends in Iraq, it has had that [00:29:13] since the 2003 American invasion and [00:29:17] overthrowing of the uh governor Saddam Hussein at that [00:29:21] time, so we just have to wait and see as far as any immediate [00:29:24] changes, I don't foresee any changes to take place, as far as [00:29:28] Iraq's situation is concerned, I think Iran..." will [00:29:32] continue to not only [00:29:35] influence the regional politics, especially with Saudi [00:29:39] Arabia, because I think Iran wants to put a tremendous amount of [00:29:43] pressure on Saudi Arabia to pressure the United States [00:29:47] in essence to end the war and [00:29:50] hence the support for Iraq and hence the support for Hutis [00:29:54] will continue for forceable future unless something [00:29:58] totally drastic happens and Iran would stop that [00:30:02] right? Professor Maty, we also seen that there was a meeting that [00:30:05] was scheduled to take place in Romania, they are with the gulf states also in [00:30:08] presence, which is canceled and what the Umani authorities have said on Saudi [00:30:12] Arabia's request, what does that show in terms the current [00:30:15] response uh towards what is happening in the straight by the [00:30:19] Gulf states and Saudi Arabia, even a man who earlier was very close to [00:30:23] reaching an agreement with Iran on this, well [00:30:26] apparently sana, Iran and Oman have [00:30:29] agreed as to how they would... [00:30:32] divide right in between the thalwick lines, the [00:30:36] deepest point in in the straight of [00:30:39] hormos, i don't think that's an issue as far as public information is [00:30:43] concerned, what we're understanding. what is [00:30:47] at at the at the main question right now here is whether or not all the [00:30:51] pergion golf arab states like i stated before, they would [00:30:55] agree to this agreement, that means the would agree to pay both [00:30:58] parties, iran to the north and Oman to the south, for [00:31:02] safe passage, which brings up the question of whether or not what the [00:31:06] United States is saying that they have totally demined and
