I mean, if the president [00:00:07] of the United States says he does not need international [00:00:10] law, if you know the [00:00:13] of entire body [00:00:15] of of law is not [00:00:16] of being uphold, you can make sanctions against the ICC [00:00:20] for ruling on something which is absolutely in their [00:00:23] duty and and obligation to [00:00:25] of rule, we are looking a [00:00:27] of lawless situation, and I think... "that is why I have been [00:00:31] arguing for the last several years [00:00:35] of of that we urgently need new international security architecture, [00:00:39] because international law and the the order, as it [00:00:42] emerged after the end [00:00:44] of the cold war, where there was an attempt to establish an [00:00:47] unilateral dominance of certain [00:00:51] countries, that clearly is falling apart, [00:00:55] if you look at the so-called middle east, southwest Asia, the [00:00:58] entire security..." architecture, as it existed [00:01:02] before the United States and [00:01:05] Israel started [00:01:05] the two wars against Iran, is also [00:01:08] disintegrating, so for the for southeast Asia [00:01:12] there is an urgent need to have new security [00:01:15] of architecture, which you must [00:01:18] be guaranteeing naturally [00:01:22] the rights [00:01:23] of the palestinians a palestinian [00:01:25] state, it must provide however economic [00:01:30] development for all countries, because the only name for peace is [00:01:34] development, so I think that we are [00:01:36] in a an unbelievable [00:01:38] of turmol where people have to review that the policies which [00:01:42] existed up to now clearly have [00:01:45] failed, the order has fallen apart, the new [00:01:49] order is not yet there, but I [00:01:51] think [00:01:54] the the the everything has to start with the idea that international [00:01:58] law must be uphold. "this is why [00:02:01] the UN charter must be respected, the [00:02:04] of Geneva Convention, the instruments [00:02:10] of of the UN like of the ICC and the International Court of Justice, [00:02:11] the they must be respected [00:02:14] of as absolute authority, because otherwise we are in great [00:02:18] danger of falling into anarchy on the whole [00:02:21] of globe. Absolutely. Miss Helga Zepla Rush, founder Shilla [00:02:28] in in Institute, thank you very much for being with us on this episode of unfolds, we really appreciate you. taking time out sir, coming back to you one last question, [00:02:32] talk about the diet humanitarian crisis that has been [00:02:37] of unfolding in Gaza in [00:02:38] a particular, now we know for fact there haven't [00:02:42] been [00:02:42] a ample supplies when it [00:02:44] of comes to the medicines, also when we talk [00:02:47] about the lack of access to the clean drinking [00:02:51] of water, from the very basic communities [00:02:52] of of life over there, with with the kind of given [00:02:56] approach on the part [00:02:58] of the Europeans in the kind of approach. the strategy in the Trump administration [00:03:01] as well and also how Israelies have been [00:03:05] going about in order to criticize and also coming hard [00:03:09] on what the UN UN's policy and its [00:03:13] subsidiary agencies work in Gaza [00:03:17] of was concerned. What is the way forward when it comes to [00:03:20] alleviating the suffering [00:03:22] of the Gazans amit this entire [00:03:25] humanitarian crisis? Egypt of [00:03:28] course has a great role. and that Egypt along with other arab [00:03:32] countries and [00:03:33] of Israel of course has been pushing backward [00:03:36] our all of our efforts to push inward [00:03:40] the supplies and all the humanitarian aid for our [00:03:44] of father in palestinians and there has been push and [00:03:47] pull between us on the [00:03:51] of borders [00:03:52] of especially across the raf the rafa crossing [00:03:55] border and we have managed to get into to get the supplies and [00:03:59] the into the gas for the [00:04:03] Palestinian people and we're still actually pushing [00:04:07] with the [00:04:08] of sharms peace plan and um we [00:04:12] do need more international society pressure [00:04:15] on Israel that's why we do need the EU and more [00:04:19] pressure on the Israeli part [00:04:21] of because we're talk we're talking about very small [00:04:25] area of land the Gaza strip and it's totally [00:04:29] destructed. with 1 million half people [00:04:32] among dead bodies on the [00:04:36] sides and only the sea in front [00:04:38] of them, only in the Mediterranean in front [00:04:41] of them, so Egypt as a state has been pushing and [00:04:44] pushing with our efforts, diplomatic efforts and we have [00:04:48] managed to get [00:04:50] a some infrastructure tools and [00:04:54] workers and so to rebuild gaza, but we do [00:04:58] need more international. society pressure, especially [00:05:02] of today with Trump jeeperdizing world peace with the [00:05:05] Iranian war, and not only that, also [00:05:08] threatening international court of justice today. [00:05:12] and and threating that that there would be no such [00:05:16] authority in the world threatening that there would be no [00:05:20] international law in the world, so god [00:05:24] knows what will happen with one million and a half people in Gaza, only the sea [00:05:28] in front them with no more international society [00:05:32] pressure on Israel to have those people still alive [00:05:35] on their land. Masara Kira, expert international relations, [00:05:39] founder the European North African center for research, thank you. very much for taking time [00:05:43] out for unfold tonight, [00:05:45] we really appreciate that, with that we come to the end the first segment of [00:05:48] today's show. into the second segment, we are going to [00:05:52] understand what is exact exactly happening when it comes [00:05:55] to the US Iran conflict is concerned, we know for fact that [00:05:59] Washington has decided to postpone any fresh [00:06:03] strikes against Iran until after the midterm elections, [00:06:06] also when we talk about there are there are increased [00:06:10] attacks by the Houti rebels against King of Saudi Arabia, kingdom of Saudi [00:06:14] Arabia has befittingly responded to this [00:06:17] particular aggression on the part of Futi rebels, also that [00:06:21] commitment of standing behind the kingdom [00:06:25] of Saudi Arabia, coming from Pakistan as well as [00:06:29] Turkey, all these three countries entered into a [00:06:33] mutual defense agreement, Makka defense [00:06:36] agreement and Pakistan has already deployed its [00:06:40] troops over there. that has been confirmed by the DJI [00:06:44] SPR, also Pakistan's commitment when it comes to ensuring the [00:06:47] sovereignty, territorial integrity and overall security the kingdom [00:06:51] of Saudi Arabia, we know for fact both turkey [00:06:54] and Pakistan had [00:06:58] given that applause when it comes to the vigilance and preparedness of kingdom of Saudi [00:07:02] Arabia in dealing and thorting this threat by the [00:07:06] auti rebels, also we know for fact there was already a destruction as far as the [00:07:10] state of Homus is concerned, also uncertainity [00:07:13] around Red Sea as well as Babel Mander, we have already [00:07:17] seen the consequences all around the globe in terms the economic [00:07:21] consequences also with the increased oil prices, the rising [00:07:25] shipping costs also manifesting into [00:07:28] inflation, at the same time we have [00:07:32] seen the regional countries trying their utmost in order to [00:07:36] bring the situation back to some sort [00:07:40] of normalcy through the diplomate. intervention [00:07:43] we know for fact Pakistan played a pivoted role when it came to deescalating the [00:07:47] situation between Iran and the US, its commitment on [00:07:50] one side with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, security also [00:07:54] urging for the deescalation the situation. [00:07:58] What does that exactly means and what are the chances of [00:08:01] diplomacy taking precedence or lead in comparison [00:08:05] to the military escalation, [00:08:07] that is the key question we are going to understand, for that we are honored to [00:08:11] been joined by Mr. Joe. Hood, former acting secretary of [00:08:15] state for near Eastern affairs. Mr. [00:08:18] Hood, thank you very much for being with us on the show tonight, really appreciate [00:08:22] that. Also, we are honored to being joined by Dr. Stephen Turner, he is [00:08:26] analyst geopolitical Affairs. Dr. Turner, thank you very much for your time also for [00:08:30] being with us on the show tonight, really appreciate that ambassador. I'll [00:08:34] begin with you, what sense should we be [00:08:38] making of this decision on the part of Washington [00:08:42] to post? postpone the new strikes against Iran until after [00:08:46] the midterm elections. Well, thank you for having [00:08:49] me. I think that Donald Trump wants to do a couple of things. First, he [00:08:53] wants to remind the regime in Tehran that military [00:08:57] action is still an option, and that they [00:09:00] should consider that in terms their [00:09:03] diplomacy. And second, I think he wants to [00:09:07] make sure that the American public and the oil markets understand [00:09:11] that he's not. going to do anything that's going to [00:09:15] cause oil prices to spike even temporarily [00:09:18] between now and the final day the election on November [00:09:21] 3rd, because most Americans are not [00:09:25] following the day-to-day of this war, [00:09:29] you see interviews of people on the street in various media outlets [00:09:32] and some the people are only vaguely [00:09:36] aware that there is a war with Iran, but what they're very [00:09:39] aware of is how much they're spending to put gasoline in their vehicles [00:09:43] every day. Americans drive average about 50 [00:09:47] kilometers a day to get to work, so this is [00:09:51] something that American voters feel very acutely, [00:09:54] and uh, so Donald Trump is not going to want to do anything that's going to [00:09:58] cause them to feel more pain at the [00:10:02] gasoline pump uh before they go to the [00:10:05] elections for the Congress and the Senate [00:10:09] on November 3rd. Please do correct me. If I am [00:10:12] wrong, I I watched one the clips of Mr. President Donald [00:10:16] Trump when he was asked about the question [00:10:20] regarding the diesel coming from from Russia, now he is thank [00:10:24] president put in on that particular front, is that correct and [00:10:27] what sort of an impact it is going to have when it comes to President Trump [00:10:31] saying that there is lot of oil that is going to come in [00:10:35] America in the coming days, do you think it's going to have [00:10:39] a considerable relief for the citizens and could perhaps [00:10:41] sway in in the general public [00:10:45] opinion when it comes to the lowest approval ratings for president Donald Trump just [00:10:49] before the November midterm elections? the short [00:10:53] answer is no, this is not enough diesel to [00:10:57] make any effect on the uh world market [00:11:00] and prices in the United States are set by world market prices, [00:11:04] not by simply what supply we have inside the [00:11:08] United States, so um, I think if the [00:11:12] president was hoping to have an effect on the [00:11:15] futures trading and and the price of diesel from day [00:11:19] today, that has already failed, and I don't think [00:11:23] that these deliveries of diesel are... going to have enough time even to [00:11:26] have an effect on the market uh, because you know voting [00:11:30] is already underway, most states allow some [00:11:34] form of early voting, absent voting, so [00:11:38] lot of Americans have already cast their ballots or are getting [00:11:42] ready to do so in the next couple of weeks, so even [00:11:45] if uh these deliveries were to have an effect sometime [00:11:49] toward the end of October, that probably would be too late for many [00:11:53] voters, exactly you. is well taken, please stay with us [00:11:56] ambassadorhood, let me bring in Dr. Turner into the discussion also. Dr. [00:12:00] Turner, what's your understanding when we try to analyze as to what are [00:12:04] the stakes with the for the Donald Trump's [00:12:07] administration at this point in time, just before the [00:12:11] midterm elections happen in November with Iran conflict [00:12:15] is concerned? [00:12:17] Well, the Trump administration [00:12:20] is running scared at this point, I mean the the Republican Party. [00:12:25] is anticipating major losses in the elections for both the US [00:12:29] house of representatives and for the US senate, and [00:12:33] so the president is trying to find a way to minimize those [00:12:36] losses, if not try to make some gains, by making even his foreign [00:12:40] policy geared toward lowering gas prices, [00:12:44] that's [00:12:44] a very strange way to be acting um, at least - for [00:12:48] example, if I were in the military a forward deployed [00:12:52] naval vessel or a base around Iran, and I heard the president say [00:12:56] that he was not going to strike Iran until the middle [00:13:00] of November because the elections, I would be [00:13:04] very concerned, because in the meantime, it kind of gives the [00:13:07] Iranian military and the IRGC an opportunity to build up their [00:13:11] capacity to launch to launch attacks, to put things in motion and even to [00:13:15] launch attacks with without the threat the United [00:13:18] States um being willing to strike back, and that's very confusing, [00:13:22] I mean I don't believe that if Iran were to... strike a US base then the United [00:13:26] States would refrain from striking back, but to try to put [00:13:30] the the war in between the United States and Iran and context [00:13:34] of election campaigning is is very is very [00:13:37] weird, and further more the efforts [00:13:40] to you know lower the price of diesel by [00:13:44] buying diesel or allowing Russia to sell [00:13:48] diesel to the global market, and a time when eum [00:13:52] Europe is a war with Russia fighting against Ukraine. [00:13:55] "and the United States is at war with Iran who's also receiving intelligence [00:13:59] and support from Russia is very strange because it it [00:14:02] effectively um aiding the enemy a war where we're [00:14:06] fighting against them, Russia is not an ally the United [00:14:10] States, so these are these are very interesting choices to be [00:14:13] making coming up coming up to an election from foreign policy [00:14:17] standpoint. Dr. Turn, that is exactly the point I'm [00:14:21] curious to understand you about when it comes to President Donald Trump." [00:14:25] talking of and thanking president Putin for sending in the diesel. [00:14:29] now there was an earlier stance when it comes to Trump's administration regarding [00:14:33] Russian oil, more specifically when we talk about [00:14:36] India. now he had been saying about [00:14:40] it that that oil was actually fueling the Ukraine [00:14:43] war. now at this point in time is thanking president [00:14:47] Putin for sending in the diesel. so with this [00:14:51] contradiction, do you how do you think it's going to play out for the voters? [00:14:55] just when they are about to go for the midterm [00:14:58] elections, well the the voting public in [00:15:02] the United States is very polarized, and that's by [00:15:05] design, so I i'm certain that the [00:15:09] you know people that are opposed to the current administration are going [00:15:13] to take these statements and become further infuriated by [00:15:16] them, and and it'll help galvanize them to to vote against him, but his [00:15:20] supporters, if there even going to be if if [00:15:24] the... media that reports um that is [00:15:28] washed by trump supporters even reports on these issues they will minimize [00:15:32] them or change them so that it plays well well for them so [00:15:36] mean "the reality is less [00:15:40] important in the in in when it comes to campaigning than [00:15:43] the way that the campaigners are able to spend [00:15:47] right, coming back to you ambassador hood, when we try to [00:15:51] analyze Trump administration's policy ever since this invasion [00:15:55] happened on 28th of February, is there any [00:15:58] specified pattern that we can develop after looking at what President [00:16:02] Trump has done on this front or do we see back and [00:16:06] forth" contradictions and statements and actions and [00:16:10] do you see any any aspect the entire [00:16:13] strategy working out? because clearly we see Iranians [00:16:17] rejecting any sort of a pressure, rejecting any sort [00:16:21] of military pressure or coersion, [00:16:24] yet on the other side they remain open to dialogue [00:16:28] but not under pressure and coersion, so [00:16:31] if this sort of a strategy or pattern [00:16:35] of strategy on the Trump part of... Trump Trump's administration did not [00:16:39] work out throughout so far, so how do you think [00:16:43] this policy of maximum pressure going to work out in [00:16:47] future and how he is going to get something out of [00:16:51] it to show to the public that at the end the day that he had got some sort [00:16:55] of victory? Well, as career [00:16:58] diplomat i would disagree with you, I don't see any signs that the [00:17:02] regime is ready for dialogue, what they're ready for is [00:17:06] capitulation. "and that is true of President Trump as [00:17:10] well, uh, that's why we see them issuing uh [00:17:14] seven-point statements about all the things the United States needs to [00:17:17] do in order for Iran then to enter into uh [00:17:21] discussions again, and these include uh things [00:17:25] that are, I think normal and reasonable for a [00:17:29] dialogue, which would be unfreezing [00:17:32] Iran's frozen assets uh, [00:17:35] and stopping..." uh the naval blockade [00:17:39] in exchange for Iran no longer firing on commercial [00:17:43] ships in those waters uh, but it also [00:17:47] includes completely ridiculous uh requirements such [00:17:51] as ending the war on all fronts, and what they mean [00:17:55] by that, as we discovered after the demise the [00:17:59] memorandum of understanding, is that Israel has to stop [00:18:03] fighting Hezbollah, the Lebanese government has to stop fighting [00:18:06] Hezbollah, "the Iraqi government has to stop fighting Iran's [00:18:10] militias there, the regime [00:18:13] in in [00:18:16] the the huti regime in Yemen needs to be given cart [00:18:20] blanche in that country, this [00:18:23] is ridiculous, [00:18:24] I mean the United [00:18:25] States government cannot speak for all these [00:18:28] other sovereign governments when it makes a deal with [00:18:32] Iran, and that's exactly what Iran is demanding in order to [00:18:36] move to an. actual diplomatic discussion, [00:18:40] so those [00:18:40] are all that's just non those are non-starters, so I don't think [00:18:44] that the Iranians are actually ready for dialogue [00:18:48] that part of already signed mou, although it fell [00:18:52] apart the islam memorandum of understanding, but the [00:18:55] yemen front was pretty much part of that and the US pretty much [00:18:59] agreed to that, wasn't that the case? [00:19:03] no, those were separate things, it was the leban, seek your pardon, it was the... [00:19:07] lebanon lebanon front again, [00:19:11] no, I think that President Trump fully [00:19:15] intends on, not getting [00:19:19] in the way of governments like Israel or Lebanon [00:19:23] or Iraq in taking over [00:19:27] the full sovereignty their own [00:19:30] countries, I don't think any American president would [00:19:34] stand in the way of that, so I think for the... Iranians to [00:19:38] be demanding that, they know that that's a non-starter, and I think it [00:19:41] shows that they're just not serious about a real conversation, a real [00:19:45] discussion with the United States government about a long-term modus for [00:19:49] vendi, so so so as per your [00:19:52] understanding, given this assessment of yours, what is [00:19:56] behind this, what is, what is the motivation when it comes [00:20:00] to Iran's government's approach towards this whole crisis [00:20:04] concerned, why are they serious for your understanding? when it comes [00:20:08] to the serious negotiations or striking any sort of [00:20:11] sustainable agreement with the US is concerned? [00:20:15] well, I have the interesting [00:20:18] opportunity of sitting with Iranian commentators [00:20:21] in various media platforms and I've been doing [00:20:25] so over the past six months on regular basis. [00:20:29] now we know [00:20:30] that these commentators generally receive their talking points from the revolutionary [00:20:34] guard, so what we hear from them, I think we can understand. [00:20:50] take over, we own the straight of Hormus now, we [00:20:53] have hegemany where you have lost it, this [00:20:57] is like the SUS moment for the United [00:21:00] Kingdom, they used to be the security guarantor the [00:21:03] region, then it had to pass to the United States, now it's [00:21:07] passing to us, Iran, that's the very clear [00:21:10] message, and I don't think anyone in the world [00:21:13] frankly signs up to that, which is why [00:21:17] there hasn't been any government in the world that has put out [00:21:20] supportive of teran's positions right ambassador hood, [00:21:24] let me take this very interesting point to Dr. Turner also Dr. [00:21:28] Turner, what's your assessment, are the Iranians [00:21:32] to enter into negotiations for any sustainable agreement with the US, and also [00:21:36] do [00:21:37] you do you think if the Iranians consider it as Swiss canal [00:21:41] moment [00:21:42] for for them v the straight of homose [00:21:45] crisis? Well, I can certainly see why [00:21:49] the Iranian. consider to have won the conflict, at least at [00:21:52] this stage, the United States has not been able to stop them from [00:21:56] blocking the street of war moves, they haven't been able to get the [00:22:00] Iranians to stop shooting missiles and rockets at [00:22:04] their gulf neighbors or at American military bases, and even [00:22:08] though the United States and and Israel have [00:22:10] destroyed much of [00:22:13] Iran's air force and [00:22:16] long long um distance. military [00:22:20] capabilities and most likely it's nuclear [00:22:23] program, Iran has pulled the trump card in by even [00:22:27] just threatening to block the formus, they've put, they've effectively [00:22:31] imposed crippling sanctions on the global economy, especially the United States, I [00:22:35] mean the Trump administration strategy of imposing further sanctions [00:22:39] is not really going to move the needle at all, the United States has been imposing sanctions [00:22:43] on the Islamic Republic since 1979, it's [00:22:47] over 45 years, the only way that united states really [00:22:51] could expect to change the outcome the [00:22:54] situation is by um [00:22:58] significantly increasing the scope the conflict, and I don't think the [00:23:01] United States currently is willing to do anything the sort, so [00:23:05] really Iran has no need to set [00:23:09] realistic negotiations, I mean they know the [00:23:13] United States has been negotiating with them for several decades, it knows [00:23:17] what the Iranian regimes and until the... United States is ready [00:23:21] to give Iran those things, Iran has no need [00:23:25] to change the way it's been acting, doesn't have reason [00:23:28] to to lift the blockade, the blockade, it doesn't have [00:23:32] reason to negotiate in good faith, [00:23:36] so we'll see, I mean Iran can sit out, can [00:23:40] continue this situation and keep the status quo for years if it needs [00:23:43] to, the they have no [00:23:45] reason, right, Dr. Stephen [00:23:49] Turner. analyst geopolitical affairs, thank you very much for taking time out for unfold tonight, we [00:23:53] really appreciate that, one last question, mean [00:23:57] whatever is happening, i understand from [00:24:01] you are coming, all of those point make huge [00:24:05] sense, do we understand any the regional mediators [00:24:08] including pakistan which played a pivot role when it came to the signing [00:24:12] of Islamabad mou, also lot of efforts being put [00:24:16] in by Qatar, Egypt, also lot of emphasis on the part of [00:24:21] Is there any sort of leverage with any these mediators [00:24:25] to perhaps bring back both the sides once again to the [00:24:28] negotiating table or what [00:24:31] would [00:24:39] it breaking news coming our way where the prime minister of pakistan shahbas sharif has strongly [00:24:43] condemned the henous acts from the hoothi rebels the attacks [00:24:47] on the Saudi Arabian Kingdom. targeted the civilians [00:24:51] as the prime minister condemns the civilian infrastructure that [00:24:55] has been damaged by the hoothi rebels, the militia attacked on the radh [00:24:58] airport expresses deepest condolences to the [00:25:02] berieved families. the prime minister of pakistan shahbas sharif [00:25:06] calls huti malitia attacks on civilian infrastructure out [00:25:10] as the prime minister strongly condemns the henous attacks by the [00:25:13] hoothies. praise for the families who have lost their loved [00:25:17] ones and solidarity. the kingdom of Saudi [00:25:21] Arabia, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has [00:25:25] strongly condemned the heinous attacks by the hutis as prime minister [00:25:28] expresses deepest condolences with the families and stands in unwaving [00:25:32] solidarity with Saudi Arabia its leadership and its people.
