[00:07:19] but for more details and live streaming log to our website [00:07:25] find us on our socials in the name of [00:08:13] to talk about the situation developing in the middle east, in [00:08:17] the second segment we are going to talk about the controversy in the [00:08:20] so-called largest democracy in the world, India [00:08:23] regarding the revision in the electoral roles, [00:08:27] there has been crackdown on the part the authorities against the [00:08:30] demonstrations and the massive protests [00:08:34] as they have erupted against this exercise the election [00:08:38] commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata party [00:08:42] led government in the center, we are going to talk about that [00:08:45] particular pressing issue India is faced with in the second segment of [00:08:54] that the situation which is unfolding in the middle [00:08:58] east has entered into a very dangerous [00:09:01] phase. when we talk about the convergence of multiple crises, when we [00:09:05] talk about there was a crisis that was unfolding between the [00:09:09] US and Iran, there is little bit of lull [00:09:13] when we talk about the active hostilities between the two, but on the other [00:09:17] side we have seen there is increase in the escalation [00:09:21] when we talk about Saudi Arabia and the Huti [00:09:24] rebels, also there are reports that suggest that the [00:09:28] fighting continues in the red sea around Babel [00:09:32] Mandab between the Houti rebels and the Yemen's [00:09:36] government. Also when we talk about in the latest the [00:09:39] developments there has been a horrific attack. on [00:09:43] kingdom of Saudi Arabia Zuriyad's King Khalid International [00:09:47] Airport, as result of which there have [00:09:49] been reports of casualities and injuries [00:09:53] as well, at least 12 people have been killed and over [00:09:56] 309 people have been injured [00:10:00] in that particular series of strikes by the Houti [00:10:04] rebels against Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we have seen a [00:10:07] strong reaction coming from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia [00:10:11] calling or... describing this action is a full [00:10:15] fledged war crime and is also promised very [00:10:18] decisive response against the houti rebels in the wake [00:10:22] of this particular act of aggression. on the part the huties, [00:10:26] likewise we have seen the condemmination coming from all [00:10:29] across, when we talk about the United Nations Secretary, General [00:10:33] Pakistan's prime minister Shahbaz Sharief has also [00:10:36] condemned this attack and is also reiterated [00:10:40] Pakistan's commitment to Saudi Arabia's security, [00:10:44] especially under the Macca joint defense [00:10:47] agreement, also Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab [00:10:51] Emirates and number of other countries and also... [00:10:55] international institutions, including the European Union, they have [00:10:59] also condemned this attack against Kingdom of Saudi [00:11:02] Arabia's sovereignty, territorial integrity [00:11:06] and security. At the same time there is an interesting factor when we talk [00:11:10] about President Donald Trump, he was asked whether there could [00:11:14] be a possibility the military involvement on the [00:11:18] part the US, besides the Saudi [00:11:21] forces against the hootis, he responded by saying: [00:11:25] that we may, but that is not an official [00:11:29] confirmation that perhaps the US would be [00:11:32] involved in this retaliation the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia against the [00:11:36] hoothies through the military means, what are the options [00:11:40] resting with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia amid this [00:11:44] escalating situation between itself and the [00:11:47] hoothis is concerned, what is the likelihood the US military [00:11:51] involvement in this and also when we talk about in the [00:11:55] larger scheme of things when there are [00:11:58] uncertainties regarding as to where that conflict between [00:12:02] the US and Iran will go, although there is a suspension of [00:12:06] strikes, there was an announcement made by the US president regarding the [00:12:10] suspension of strikes until after the midterm elections [00:12:13] against Iran, but does this front actually [00:12:17] compound that entire situation in the middle east [00:12:21] when we talk about kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Houti rebels? where [00:12:25] does diplomacy stand at the moment when it comes to or there [00:12:28] any sort of chances when we talk about deescalating [00:12:32] the situation between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Hutis [00:12:36] through diplomatic [00:13:13] we specifically try to understand this [00:13:16] very series of strikes on the part the huties when [00:13:20] it comes to the civilian infrastructure within the [00:13:24] kingdom of south. Arabia, it has been described as a full [00:13:27] fledged war crime on the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it has [00:13:31] also promised a very decisive response. Could you give us an [00:13:35] understanding, how do you look at that? [00:13:39] What's your assessment, what is this act on the part of hutis when [00:13:43] it comes to specifically visave the civilian [00:13:53] going on in the middle east, look, let's... "let's not kit ourselves, okay? the hoothi [00:13:56] rebels are proxies the Iranian regime, [00:14:00] okay? so they are acting uh, one [00:14:04] on behalf of Iran, but two, the hoothi rebels have been at war with [00:14:08] Saudi Arabia for years, right? I mean, I can recall when I was the senior intelligence [00:14:12] officer in jibuuti uh, Africa in 2015 that the [00:14:15] Hutis were firing drones and ballistic missiles at [00:14:19] Saudi Arabia, but also at the United Arab Emirates, so there's a lot of blad bad [00:14:23] blood between the two." Okay uh and and I suspect you [00:14:27] know strongly Iran's been funding them, equipping them, [00:14:31] training them, there's IRGC advisors on the ground, the Houti have [00:14:35] also been firing ballistic missiles into Israel, so let's let's not [00:14:39] let's not think that this just occurred, this has been going on for a long [00:14:43] time uh [00:14:44] this is intended to in my opinion do two things uh it's it's [00:14:48] intended to add to the the glut if you of oil coming [00:14:52] out the uh out the Persian Gulf by shutting down, I get your [00:14:56] point sweet, if you [00:15:02] this instance, in particular when when we talk [00:15:05] about the targeting the civilian infrastructure, we've seen the [00:15:09] casualties happening, hundreds of injuries have [00:15:12] happened, this is clear cut violation of international law, the [00:15:16] international norms, there are covenants, there conventions [00:15:19] internationally that forbid and prohibit in [00:15:23] categorical terms of any... military [00:15:26] advancement or strike when it comes to the civilian [00:15:29] infrastructure? no, I agree with that, it is, it is a war [00:15:32] crime, and look, we've seen nothing but war crimes for the past four and a [00:15:36] half years and the international community largely ignored them, [00:15:40] okay? uh, so yes a war crime, civilians were killed, [00:15:44] civilians were the target, okay, riyad is the airport that they [00:15:48] struck is a civilian airport, it's [00:15:49] not a military airport, it's a civilian airport, it was delivered and it got what they [00:15:53] wanted, which was attention to their cause [00:15:57] and attention to Iran's cause, and they believe that by [00:16:00] escalating and getting that type of attention that the other nations [00:16:04] in the region, the other gulf state nations and... and [00:16:07] Israel will somehow back off of uh off either [00:16:11] Iran or back off uh off the hoofi, but all that's [00:16:15] really done is just in my opinion is just yes it it [00:16:19] further escalates the situation and it's going to possibly cause an [00:16:23] expansion the war okay when i say expansion the war mean [00:16:26] Saudi Arabia retaliating but retaliatory strikes don't win [00:16:30] wars they just make you feel better at [00:16:32] the end the day but it could involve Pakistan it could also involve [00:16:35] Turkey uh and stated in your opening uh [00:16:38] piece, both them are signatories to the Mecca agreement, [00:16:42] but let's also understand that they signed that document almost three months ago, [00:16:46] so it's very um we're [00:16:48] a time right now uh that that one or [00:16:51] two actions on the battlefield can cause strategic [00:16:55] consequences and and we're starting to see that uh right now [00:16:59] on the ground [00:17:07] "what's your understanding when we specifically talk about the options [00:17:11] resting right now after this horrific attack against civilian [00:17:15] infrastructure in the kingdom? what options resting with the [00:17:19] kingdom of Saudi Arabia when it has promised a [00:17:22] decisive response in return to towards the [00:17:30] look, I agree with what my colleague John Sweet is saying, I think [00:17:34] the hoothies are messaging here trying to bring a..." attention to their [00:17:38] cause uh by attacking the king Khalid airport, which is a [00:17:42] civilian airport, clearly uh they're not only just committing a war [00:17:46] crime uh, but they're trying to send loud exclamation mark that they don't [00:17:49] mind uh because they view that as is key to [00:17:53] getting their global message out there. that set, I think there's also two [00:17:57] other messages that are happening that will impact the nature of Saudi [00:18:01] Arabia's response uh, this kind of attack, this type of horrific attack [00:18:05] where 12 people were killed uh did happen a vacuum, [00:18:09] I highly suspect that the approaching US mid-terms [00:18:13] also motivated the hoothies to act uh by attacking the US all in [00:18:17] the region, by attacking the sunni state at that, and [00:18:21] that they are attempting to influence oil prices and and [00:18:25] probably Iran is behind this, not probably, we know that Iran is behind this, the [00:18:29] IRGC has been less effective of late in terms of interdicting [00:18:33] oil supplies going through the traiter chamus, and so they need the hoothies to be [00:18:37] escalated. in the babomed dead straight in the red sea in general, and I [00:18:41] think that's why we've seen this action of late with the Housies taking the red sea [00:18:44] coastal areas and now forcing Saudi Arabia to come [00:18:47] back, so Saudi Arabia has a big decision ahead them, [00:18:51] they need to ask themselves, are we going to continue to manage this conflict [00:18:55] as we have for you, two decades, this goes back to [00:18:59] 2015 uh, where they just want to manage it to a stailmate, because that's [00:19:03] certainly been their approach, that's certainly been the yemini government approach, [00:19:07] how... asstelment has got them vulnerable where they're at now because Iran [00:19:11] over that same time period is been supplying um via the [00:19:14] IRGC uh the hoothies with ballistic missiles and drones and they're coming [00:19:18] under attack so so far Saudi Arabia in terms of this firm [00:19:22] response that their defense spokesman uh made this morning or [00:19:25] yesterday depending on what time zone you're in um yeah if it's just going to be [00:19:29] more air strikes if it's only going to be loand to ground type [00:19:32] support uh for operations to retake uh territory control by the [00:19:36] hoothies. "I don't think much changes uh, and Pakistan [00:19:40] itself, as part of this Mecca agreement, is also going to have to be deciding whether [00:19:44] or not they're going to hear their own 2015 uh [00:19:48] decision not to involve themselves in offensive [00:19:51] operations uh in Yemen, but simply to resort to or I mean [00:19:55] to uh refrain themselves from that, but just to [00:19:58] basically be there to defend holy sites and and uh [00:20:02] civilian sites within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia itself uh so [00:20:06] Saudi Arabia has a big..." voice here, it's not clear which way they're going to do uh, [00:20:10] but I do think they need to be doing more air streaks, I think they need to be considering the [00:20:14] introduction of of ground forces if only a limited basis [00:20:17] and and and quickly here, I think they also need to be talking to the new [00:20:21] partners, how they can bring this about, because if not, this is just going [00:20:25] to be rince and repeat and Saudi Arabia in the region will keep facing this [00:20:29] crisis, uh the Houthies are not going away, unless they're [00:20:39] the US position with hoodis, now there was an [00:20:43] earlier stance, we know for fact a few weeks back, there [00:20:47] was a statement made by president himself, [00:20:50] that perhaps there was some sort of an engagement when it [00:20:54] comes to the US and hooutis and hootis didn't want the [00:20:58] US to come after them. now looking at [00:21:02] this spec specific attack, [00:21:06] president Trump was himself asked whether there could be a [00:21:09] US military involvement and he said we may. it's not [00:21:13] an official confirmation, as we do have clarity [00:21:17] on that, but what could be the likelihood the? involvement at [00:21:21] this stage going against the hoothies, do you [00:21:25] think the US just before the midterm elections could afford to be involved [00:21:29] militarily on another front just when it is involved [00:21:32] directly with Iran on the other [00:21:39] of 2025, from March to May 2025, the United States was involved an [00:21:43] operation called rough writer in which they bombed right, hoothy targets [00:21:47] for the better part of 45 days and if you recall, uh when the [00:21:50] ceasefire was announced, the uh [00:21:53] the agreement for the most part was the hoothi said we won't we won't attack us ships [00:21:57] if you stop bombinas right and that was it and that supposedly was the end [00:22:01] the operation an operation by the way which the Saudi Arabia government [00:22:05] sat back and watch and did not participate uh they're probably [00:22:09] thinking they probably should have done that earlier look the president says he [00:22:13] may consider striking targets in Yemen um I I [00:22:16] would say if he goes after targets in Yemen that those targets are going to be [00:22:20] IRGC targets, IRGC forces that are [00:22:24] supporting hoothi rebels at ballistic missile sites, at ports [00:22:27] where missiles are arriving at training facilities, so there may [00:22:31] be some additional strikes that occur, [00:22:33] I don't necessarily think he's going to be chasing hoothi, I think he's going to be chasing the source, [00:22:37] and the source in this case in my opinion is [00:22:39] Iran. [00:22:43] Right, okay, color sweet, when we try to understand the overall [00:22:47] scheme of things, when we talk about... were the objectives which [00:22:51] was said by Trump administration when we talk about its [00:22:54] invasion against Iran so far more [00:22:58] than more than eight months into that particular [00:23:02] conflict, there is announcement that perhaps the [00:23:05] newer strikes might come after the midterm [00:23:09] elections. now we've also seen the [00:23:13] approval ratings for President Trump going down before the [00:23:17] mid-term elections. now if if in case [00:23:20] there happens to be a military involvement on part the [00:23:23] US to support Saudi Arabia against the [00:23:27] hoothies, what sort of an impact this [00:23:31] military involvement do you think it could have generally on the public [00:23:34] opinion just before the [00:23:41] and I'll go back to what Marcus said, if it's just retiratory [00:23:44] strikes, if it's just hitting buildings and uh, and and showing [00:23:48] battle damage assessment. videos to the American public and how successful we [00:23:52] were at blowing things up, then I don't think the impact is anything, be quite [00:23:55] honest with, because it doesn't achieve anything, if the impact is fall [00:23:59] of regime, if the impact is the opening the straight because there's [00:24:03] nobody firing into either the bob bob [00:24:07] almond or into the straight of harmus, and safe passages [00:24:11] occurring, and we're seeing a sense peace break out through the middle east, [00:24:14] I think it has a positive impact, but right now the targets at [00:24:18] least as axios. reported, the possible targets that the [00:24:22] president had mentioned earlier were Iranian energy, Iranian [00:24:25] infrastructure, and nuclear targets. none them included the [00:24:29] IRGC by name, and none them include the possibility of taking the [00:24:33] regime down, so retaliatory strides and massive assaults [00:24:37] up to now, as you had just said, eight months into a conflict, having [00:24:40] achieved the desired result, in this case the desired result will [00:24:44] be uh the fall the regime. what it has done is limit their [00:24:47] abilities to respond. intentionally, but they still [00:24:51] have, as far as we understand, they still have some enriched uranium, and they still [00:24:55] have asymmetric capability that threatens the entire [00:24:58] region, and addition, it's been threatening great Britain and other [00:25:02] allies throughout Europe, because their ability to leverage proxies and [00:25:06] sleeper cells, so Iran continues to be a problem, and unless he [00:25:10] addresses the problem, which is the regime, that I don't think he gets [00:25:14] much headway in united [00:25:29] what is the likelihood the US getting militarily involved in [00:25:33] support of Saudi Arabia against Saudies given the fact that was earlier [00:25:36] statement or a stance on the part of president himself when [00:25:40] he said publicly that hoothies have asked him not to [00:25:44] go behind them after them, [00:25:46] sorry, right? now i really doubt. that [00:25:50] President Trump is going to be willing to initiate uh any wide-scale [00:25:53] attacks at this point in support of Saudi Arabia ahead the [00:25:57] midterms - simply because he's trying to manage oil prices and [00:26:01] by extension gas prices. is to the average American uh uh [00:26:04] consumer and ultimately voter uh now after the midterms on November [00:26:08] 3rd uh he certainly all options are open, I would [00:26:12] say it's notable that he came out and uh [00:26:15] stated um uh that uh he's considering strikes so I think you can [00:26:19] interpret that as messaging from President Trump uh to the hoothies [00:26:23] that look you may be uh [00:26:25] you know uh creating a problem right now but I'm going to be willing to solve it [00:26:29] most likely later after the mid-terms and he'll certainly be. free to do [00:26:33] that uh and I think it's going to be needed because I think if you just step back and you look at the [00:26:37] battlefield uh in the maps initially it was uh [00:26:41] in the last 10 days or so Saudi Arabia the coalition led by [00:26:44] Saudi Arabian umany forces that were taking the initiative uh they were [00:26:48] able to start sweeping toward the coastal plane to try to retake that [00:26:52] territory but in the last several days it's actually been the hoothies who regained [00:26:56] the initiative in and around to the tas [00:26:59] uh the the kind the political uh uh [00:27:03] gold star that they want to win for themselves uh [00:27:06] but they've been rebup so far um you know but also the uh the the [00:27:10] yumani back forces you struggled in the marib i'm sorry the marib [00:27:14] governant which is a mountain this region to try to be a supporting operation to [00:27:18] the coastal military operations but that hasn't gone well either for the [00:27:22] coalition so definitely Saudis are going to need help [00:27:26] uh they're going to need it from the United States and they're going to need it from the Mecca agreement because [00:27:30] right [00:27:37] Mark, here is the interesting dimension, now the multiple [00:27:40] fronts as far as hutis which are [00:27:44] they are involved on multiple fronts when we talk about against the kingdom of Saudi [00:27:48] Arabia itself, then in the Red Sea the reports coming [00:27:52] there is intensification, the fighting against the Yemini government itself, [00:27:56] first of all I want you understanding where where do the [00:28:00] hoothies get this capacity ' [00:28:03] from and what's actually the basis of [00:28:06] that? also, while lot of countries, international [00:28:10] organizations such as the UN and EU have condemned this [00:28:14] airport attack, now European Commission president has [00:28:18] also condemned it, but at the same [00:28:21] time she has characterized the Hutis as [00:28:24] Iran's proxies. now there is another dimension [00:28:27] when we when we try to analyze this one, just few days [00:28:31] back there was a possibility, there was an expression of interest on the part the [00:28:35] Iranian foreign ministry spokesman that Iran's good [00:28:39] offices could help mediate resolve the crisis [00:28:43] between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the [00:28:45] hoothies. looking at all these [00:28:48] aspects, what's your conclusion? do we understand [00:28:52] there is a direct backing for the capacity the Houties when it comes to Iran [00:28:56] or if it is not there, could Iran play a mediating [00:28:59] role at this point? "now that's a great [00:29:03] question and I think it really goes to the heart the problem that Iran [00:29:07] has created for itself and for the rest the mide east. Iran clearly is [00:29:11] behind this. the huties didn't find arms out of nowhere uh, they're using [00:29:15] Russian equipment, they have Iranian ballistic missiles and drones and [00:29:19] the IRGC [00:29:20] you know have feet on the ground, boots on the ground uh [00:29:22] inside controlled territory in yeman and [00:29:26] so clearly they are the sponsors of it, so it's a little bit too faced in my [00:29:30] opinion for the Iranians to be coming out. saying they can broker a [00:29:33] peace because they're actually behind this war in my opinion and so from [00:29:37] that time I think it's it's tricky and don't just take my word for it, I [00:29:41] think if you look to king Abdullah II of Jordan back in [00:29:45] 2004 we're talking 22 years ago [00:29:49] now uh he warned the Arab world that this uh access of [00:29:52] resistance that was aimed at Israel think of that what you might was [00:29:56] also in effect the Shia crecent that Iran was aiming at the [00:30:00] sunni world uh and and it's come to firation, we've seen that just on [00:30:04] the attacks that Iran has been willing to do during the Gulf war in Bahrain, [00:30:08] Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the like and the United Arab [00:30:11] Emirates, and and now we've certainly seen it in terms of indirectly through the [00:30:15] hoothies by them attacking uh Saudi Arabia, [00:30:19] so you don't think Iran is that mediator uh simply because they're [00:30:23] behind this, it's it's to their benefit right now to create second [00:30:27] front uh and the huthies are willing to do that, now I would just quickly add [00:30:30] here the the the Houties. act in many different ways, clearly their [00:30:34] chief backer is Iran, but obviously they have their own interests, so uh, [00:30:38] this is just one angle, they have a long-term war against Saudi Arabia, but [00:30:42] they're also willing to be allies to help Iran out, because in their minds it [00:30:46] helps them out. Okay, Mark,
