[00:04:30] lobbies, politicians, i had organized protests and [00:04:33] marches, but nothing was [00:04:35] working. [00:04:44] i've got you, rather than asking any politician [00:04:48] to shut weapons factories down, we could go [00:04:52] and shut [00:04:52] of them down [00:04:53] ourselves, [00:04:58] by putting our bodies on the line And our liberty on [00:05:03] of the line, occupying these factories, smashing them up and shutting them down, we [00:05:07] could take the power [00:05:09] of back into our own hands. We know [00:05:13] we had the power, small groups of people with conscience, [00:05:16] morality and few tools are all that's needed [00:05:20] to actually change the [00:05:21] world. [00:05:32] Our world of drones is rising fast from delivery [00:05:36] emergency response, law [00:05:38] enforcement. [00:05:52] Elbit systems technologies are [00:05:56] operational in dozens of [00:05:58] countries with [00:06:02] power and [00:06:05] precision. [00:06:40] Never in my wildest imagination. have ever even thought that i would [00:06:44] be in such a situation where my daughter is in [00:06:48] prison, she has been arrested for an [00:06:52] alleged action against elbit, the [00:06:56] philton site and causing [00:06:59] allegedly damage to weapons worth around one [00:07:03] million [00:07:04] pounds [00:07:11] to take. against something unjust going [00:07:15] on in my city, take pride in [00:07:17] that. [00:07:46] Direct action is a form of protest where you [00:07:48] go straight to the people that are causing the problem and you solver [00:07:50] yourself. [00:08:13] "what direct action does is it confronts power [00:08:17] a tangible way and it forces power to [00:08:20] confront [00:08:21] itself. Dire [00:08:25] action is literally I'm refusing to move. Dir action [00:08:29] is not the national parades where police come and they say can you move along now [00:08:32] please? It's 4 p.m. We will decide on how we are opposing [00:08:36] you and how we will disrupt until you listen to us. In terms of palestine [00:08:40] action that means..." We've given up and asking people to [00:08:44] stop arming Israel and we're going about um dismantling the arms [00:08:48] industry [00:08:49] ourselves. [00:09:06] It is factory of [00:09:09] revolutionaries. You've never had anything. [00:09:13] the nature of Palestine action on the [00:09:17] Palestinian cause in this country, work a sustainable [00:09:21] way for for this period of time and achieve the successes [00:09:25] that have been achieved. The effectiveness the actions that they they've [00:09:28] taken um has had huge impact, [00:09:32] factories being closed down, contracts being lost, it's [00:09:36] in the interest the public actually for people to know what is happening [00:09:40] within their cities and towns. and to be able to have a say in that, and for a [00:09:44] long time we didn't, but thanks to Palestine action, now we [00:09:48] know and we can [00:09:49] act. [00:10:04] I became aware of Palestine action through the kinds [00:10:07] of uh actions that they were engaged in to [00:10:11] disrupt the... manufacture and dissemination of [00:10:14] weapons over the course the last th to 4 years [00:10:17] and mean immediately clear that they were doing some the [00:10:21] most important protest work not only in britain but I mean the [00:10:25] world, those people are sacrificing [00:10:29] something for cause far, far bigger than [00:10:33] them and all of us, and they are giving [00:10:36] themselves, their future, their time, their mental, their [00:10:40] physical health, um, in order [00:10:44] to articulate a form of love for [00:10:48] some the most oppressed people in the [00:10:50] world, these are the best of [00:10:54] humanity. [00:11:12] When [00:11:12] they ask me why I did it, I tell them about the [00:11:15] children, how their childhood is stolen from [00:11:19] them, how their skeletons are left charred and [00:11:22] smoking, how easily... their bodies are crushed by [00:11:26] fallen buildings, how their skin melts as their [00:11:30] flaming tents collapse around them. tell them [00:11:34] the boy found carrying his brother's [00:11:37] body inside his bloody backpack. tell them [00:11:41] the girl whose hanging corpse ended at the [00:11:44] knees. tell them the [00:11:47] father holding up his headless [00:11:50] toddler. tell them the mother [00:11:54] who is leave the approximate weight of her family in body parts to [00:11:58] bury, they'd all been shattered beyond [00:12:01] recognition. Then I tell them about the [00:12:05] history, I talk about how it was us that started [00:12:09] it with our about [00:12:10] declaration, so [00:12:13] I say I cannot stand for this, it can go on no [00:12:17] longer, so I took action against [00:12:21] Albit, their weapon supplier. [00:12:25] but never forget to say that it was love, not hate that [00:12:29] called [00:12:29] me, [00:12:33] you the images coming out of gaza on our phone screens [00:12:37] every single day, showing the slaughter of [00:12:41] children, especially of children was you [00:12:44] know was very hard for all of us to take, [00:12:47] and the same for fatma zainab, she did not want to be complicit in [00:12:51] genocide, and all these images, these stories that that... [00:12:55] were reaching us um made her feel really [00:12:58] helpless and really distressed and depressed [00:13:02] um that you know why are we not doing anything [00:13:05] you know as individuals as communities why are we sitting there with our hands [00:13:09] tied the UK has has supplied Israel [00:13:12] with material support in order to facilitate its violation of [00:13:16] international law, it is very easily arguable that the UK is a complicit [00:13:20] actor in the ongoing genocide in ghaza. palestinians in Gaza [00:13:24] had living under a brutal siege by [00:13:27] land, air and sea for over [00:13:30] decade, and when [00:13:34] Palestinians in Gaza marched to the fence, which has [00:13:37] entrapped them under this brutal siege for over [00:13:41] decade, to demand their rights to freedom, the rights to [00:13:45] return to their homes a right stipulated under [00:13:49] international law, they were met and shot and [00:13:52] killed by Israeli sniper. [00:14:03] We had extreme violations, some of which can be considered [00:14:07] and classified as war crimes in terms of [00:14:10] dark direct targeting the civilians who are partaking in [00:14:13] these uh [00:14:14] demonstrations. [00:14:24] Is... responded by sniping thousands [00:14:28] them, there were thousands of amps off the back of it and [00:14:32] hundreds of people killed, and those sniper rifles, some them [00:14:36] were sold to the israelis by the [00:14:37] British. [00:14:55] so we decided to occupy the weapons [00:14:58] factory in Staffordshire, we grabbed whatever tools we [00:15:02] could, we got some ladders, we didn't have much [00:15:06] money so we just brought whatever we could from home, we [00:15:09] used a shopping bags to carry the stuff onto the [00:15:13] roof, and we were there for three days [00:15:15] and we weren't sure if they would hold us in prison [00:15:19] on remand afterwards that in that moment we had [00:15:23] the power, we could... down this factory and that is the best [00:15:27] place I have ever been, is top of an Israeli [00:15:31] weapons factory, shutting it down with hammer in my [00:15:35] hands. [00:15:43] 'forms of direct action can be thought about forms of direct action can be [00:15:47] thought about in relation to resistance to apartide and forms [00:15:51] of segregation, so direct action was used in the US civil rights [00:15:55] movements, they disrupted and broke segregation laws [00:15:58] in on public transports networks for instance or on food [00:16:02] counters, we can think about examples such as resistance to [00:16:06] chattle slavery'. [00:16:07] in the americas in which they rose up, burnt down the [00:16:10] property the the peoples who were enslaving them. all these [00:16:14] forms of resistance were holy illegal. you also have the sufragets [00:16:18] movement, which went as far as trying to push Winston [00:16:22] Churchill under a train and throwing [00:16:25] bricks at 10 Downing Street. so there's all manner [00:16:29] of ways in which directaction has achieved some the [00:16:33] things that we actually take for granted and view at. [00:16:37] as positive aspects of our society, those [00:16:41] were one through direct action they were fought for from below [00:16:45] not bestowed from above [00:16:48] here at UAV engines in Shenstone, I'm locking [00:16:52] on, I'm we've got [00:16:55] couple [00:16:57] of guys [00:16:57] with brick breakers, [00:17:03] this is Elbit's drone engine [00:17:04] factory in Shenstone, so that's why we are here. ordinary [00:17:08] people closing this factory [00:17:10] down. that sound you [00:17:14] hear is the sound of ordinary people taking direct [00:17:18] action. let's see how our [00:17:22] fortification [00:17:23] works [00:17:26] against police tools. we've [00:17:30] got to take this factory [00:17:32] down, brick by [00:17:35] bick, wall by wall. [00:17:40] 'the primary purpose is shutting elbit down and causing economic damage, [00:17:44] but if we don't publicize what's happening there, if we don't show [00:17:48] people not only how it's operating, what's happening [00:17:52] within it, the companies that are complicit with this and are supplying them, but [00:17:55] also showing people the bravery that [00:17:59] activists are taking who are going in and smashing up the inside of factory, but when you [00:18:03] see someone take that courage and take that step into action, it means [00:18:07] that's 'you have that conversation with yourself, could I take that action [00:18:10] too? if not me, who, and if not now, [00:18:14] when? I can act to stop [00:18:18] these weapons being manufactured is within my power, and I will do [00:18:21] that. [00:18:27] What brought me here today is kind of realization that direct action is [00:18:31] probably one the best ways to get your voice [00:18:33] heard. [00:18:38] We are here to shut Albert [00:18:40] down. [00:18:52] Protest has limited [00:18:56] effect in this country, and you know we saw it with [00:18:59] Grenfeld, we've seen it with Palestine, saw it with the Iraq [00:19:02] war. What we're seeing now is that these demonstrations become [00:19:06] a... are institutionalized in a way that isolates them from [00:19:10] the rest the community, so you can protest all you want, but the [00:19:14] policy change will remain very minimal, and you [00:19:17] see actually futility of some the [00:19:21] methods that have been used for decades in this [00:19:24] country, people were literally going out every day [00:19:27] and there was no impact, like it wasn't [00:19:31] that the Israeli government were going to look at that and do [00:19:34] anything, and um the only thing that i saw that i [00:19:38] felt was actually going to have any [00:19:41] impact was to stop the weapons that we're producing in this [00:19:45] country and so that leads you to the point [00:19:49] where you see direct action as [00:19:52] actually the only thing that has delivered [00:19:55] results a tangible way um and a dramatic [00:19:59] way in in this country inspired by the [00:20:03] Raythion 9. [00:20:14] so Rateon are between Rathion and Lockede Martin, the [00:20:18] largest arms company in the world at the Rathion [00:20:21] building there is number of persons inside have taken [00:20:25] over the building and are throwing [00:20:28] items, uh, computer discs, paper, etc. [00:20:32] onto the [00:20:32] roadway, [00:20:36] these were who during the Israeli war [00:20:40] on Lebanon realized they had a Rathion factory in [00:20:44] derry and they got into the [00:20:47] factory shut it down. [00:20:59] were then arrested and used the court case as an opportunity to [00:21:03] turn the tables on the [00:21:05] company, so they entered the [00:21:09] court, the accused and they left as the accusers and they were [00:21:13] able to not only be acquitted, but also Raithion was forced to [00:21:17] leave derry by seeking to turn the table and and take uh [00:21:21] these corporations to court through direct action uh [00:21:24] these these actionists sought to engage the legal [00:21:28] system a rather creative way. further more, this way of [00:21:32] thinking is a way that appeals to the law [00:21:35] and the court of public [00:21:37] opinion. [00:21:49] for... is certainly being used as a testing ground for the arms [00:21:53] industry and I mean it's not this is not just kind of claim by [00:21:57] activists or palestinians or lawyers, this is something that is [00:22:00] openly admitted by the Israeli arms industry and they're selling [00:22:04] these instruments of war as battle as battle tested [00:22:08] against the Palestinians. If you go to the DSEII arms [00:22:12] fair which happens every two years in Excel, London, you [00:22:15] will find Israeli corporations using demo videos. [00:22:20] uh on how these weapons were used and conducted in uh [00:22:23] Palestine. Israel has a constant [00:22:27] Guine pig which is the Palestinians. Guine pigs for how we [00:22:31] can control them. Guine pigs for how we can watch them. Guine pigs for how we can study [00:22:35] them. Guine pigs for how we can kill them. That the UK and the [00:22:38] Israeli military industrial complexes are actually quite [00:22:42] integrated. Now an important aspect of this was the [00:22:46] watchkeeper drone. Since becoming operational and [00:22:50] in the mid 1990s, hermis family systems logged more than [00:22:54] 40000 operational flight hours in more than [00:22:57] 40,00 successful combat missions for various forces [00:23:01] around the globe, making them the most versatile and [00:23:04] reliable, tactical in the world, in the [00:23:08] world. Albert [00:23:12] Systems is a military technology [00:23:15] company that is officially incorporated in Israel, [00:23:19] but as a multinational. corporation, it has uh different [00:23:22] subsidiaries all across the world, it produces weapons primarily for [00:23:26] the Israeli state, however it also exports its weaponry [00:23:29] to uh state actors all around the [00:23:32] world. [00:23:36] it produces many the missiles, drones, armory [00:23:40] and that's been used to pumel gaza, now it's also [00:23:44] deeply integrated with the Israeli state, israeli officials are [00:23:48] frequently at elbit events I'm here in [00:23:51] Bristol uh for the opening the new Elbit [00:23:54] factory and I'm very very proud the Israeli technology. [00:23:58] Elbit is defense technology company Israeli [00:24:02] that based here in the UK, has factories in Kent and in [00:24:05] Bristol. We quickly [00:24:08] identified Albert Systems, Israel's biggest weapons firm as [00:24:12] our main target. Elbit systems are the [00:24:16] very manifestation the Israeli military. [00:24:20] regime here in Britain. We knew they were operating in towns and [00:24:24] cities across Britain. We also understood the [00:24:28] impact it would make if Israel's biggest weapons [00:24:31] manufacturer was forced out of a country, one their [00:24:35] strongest allies, and not because the government said so, [00:24:39] but because the people. You knew [00:24:43] that Albert systems and under the subsidiary UAV tactical [00:24:46] systems were operating an arms company and a manufacturing [00:24:50] hub where they're assembling drones to be shipped off [00:24:54] to Israel from there and the idea there is if you're on the roof [00:24:58] of factory like [00:25:00] the the British health and safety rules means that no one can actually be underneath you until they take you [00:25:03] off so just being there shut down the long as long as we [00:25:07] could and buy it for a long as long as we could and [00:25:11] um yeah just keep that factory shut shut down yeah so this is day this middle [00:25:15] the sixth day top of Elvit's factory [00:25:19] in Leicester. have been dening us water for a couple of [00:25:22] days now, yeah, uh, we've now resorted to [00:25:26] every time it rains scraping water off the tent, this morning [00:25:30] um, i'll just show you over here, um, made a [00:25:33] hole in the roof, and we can see down into the [00:25:37] main workshop where they assemble killer drones, just around [00:25:41] the corner there, that's the end the drone, you see on the right there, [00:25:45] so we reckon this is where they assemble the drones ready for shipping towards [00:25:49] Israel, to be tested on Palestinians, it was kind of that [00:25:53] moment of like, we are so definitely in the right place, doing [00:25:57] the right thing, um, and [00:26:00] yeah, and that that was that was the same. day that that was that evening the police [00:26:04] came to take us down and like it was with that happening in the [00:26:08] morning, the police coming take us down that we kind of picked up the sledge [00:26:12] hammer and hammers and we're just like we need to cake this this place needs to be shut down for as long [00:26:16] as possible and we just did as much like as we could to the to the top of [00:26:19] it um i remember this guy graham from the police shouting don't do that [00:26:23] that's not going to help your cause which has [00:26:25] been i think successfully proved [00:26:27] wrong [00:26:32] when it comes to any direct action that occurs it is really important for local community [00:26:36] members to get involved, people came out and droves so we had [00:26:40] convoys coming from across [00:26:41] Lester, [00:26:47] we have people coming outside the factory, people were staying over at [00:26:50] night because we could tell that like the activists on the roof they were [00:26:54] struggling [00:27:00] and then we greed ourselves to the roof. just to stay out for a bit longer, you [00:27:04] understand? [00:27:10] once we were arrested and put into the police fans, something [00:27:14] that they hadn't really banked for was the lesser community and quite how [00:27:18] spectacular they [00:27:19] are. [00:27:26] the police were trying to get down um the activist [00:27:30] from off the roof and in that time you know uh the lester community had [00:27:34] mobilized a lot of people, they were call outs, they were standing in front the police with [00:27:38] riot shields, police had come with their [00:27:40] vans, [00:27:51] while they were busy trying to unglue us and have people on the roof, i [00:27:54] remember their conversations in my year and there was this guy saying just on the [00:27:58] radio, a bit concerned, there seem to be people putting barriers up [00:28:02] against. entrance to the factory by the time they'd got us in the vans later that night [00:28:05] um [00:28:07] the whole entrance had been barricaded a total people powered [00:28:10] bloccade the [00:28:11] factory [00:28:25] every single one these actions has often a small [00:28:29] number of people dressed up in red boiler suits maybe doing some damage or doing the [00:28:33] action and huge number of people supporting that to happen and supporting [00:28:37] it for years [00:28:37] afterwards. [00:28:41] when it came to 2023 when the there was a siege [00:28:45] held by palestine action outside the lester elbit factory, our community w [00:28:49] like okay these people have been manhandled by the police, the all [00:28:53] their tents are being confiscated, but they want to continue the [00:28:56] siege, so less the people came and gave blankets and [00:29:00] food supplies and everything for that. to be able to continue in what they firmly [00:29:04] believe that they should be there, you [00:29:05] know? [00:29:14] local people in these areas do not want an Israely [00:29:17] weapons factory operating on their doorstep, and they can [00:29:21] also be key driving force in forcing the [00:29:25] company out their city. those [00:29:28] community members took direct action themselves, when people were on the... [00:29:33] um and being refused things from the police, they threw things up, when police tried [00:29:37] to remove activists, they blocked the road, and then crucially they [00:29:41] carry on and they come out after every action, they resonate [00:29:44] more with the ones on the roof shutting down the factories than the [00:29:48] companies who are making the weapons to massacre their brothers [00:29:52] and sisters in palestine. Leicester is the most diverse [00:29:56] city in the country and we saw them come out on [00:30:00] force and ever since then ever since that action, when [00:30:04] they went on the roof in May 2021, the locals go [00:30:07] out, they maintain the disruption, they maintain the [00:30:11] protests outside that [00:30:13] factory, so the [00:30:17] British government um cancelled the watchkeeper drone [00:30:21] contract, which was worth two billion [00:30:23] pounds. [00:30:29] At the cradle of western civilization, US secretary. of state [00:30:33] Marco Rubio tells a familiar story: Persians as [00:30:36] villains, Athenians as heroes, but is that [00:30:40] history or just Washington's preferred [00:30:42] vision. Persians plundered the temples, [00:30:46] they burned the shrines, they raised the Acropolis to the ground. Case [00:30:50] closed, not so fast, history has habit of talking [00:30:54] back.
