[00:00:10] Tehran of of says Iran and Oman have agreed a route through the straight of [00:00:14] Hamos provided third parties stay [00:00:24] forces resume military strikes on southern Lebanon, even though [00:00:27] delegates from both sides are in. Roame talking [00:00:30] peace, [00:00:33] this says Israeli soldiers detained several Palestinians during raid in the [00:00:37] Colindia refugee camp in the occupied West [00:00:39] bank and former Liverpool legend [00:00:43] Mohammed Salah causes a splash in the football market joining the [00:00:47] Turkish side trabs on [00:00:48] spore. [00:00:55] of Now Iran says it has reached an [00:00:58] agreement with Oman. a route for ships transiting through the straight of [00:01:02] homus and is in the final stages of preparing a joint [00:01:06] announcement, but Tehran has also warned that the agreement [00:01:10] does not guarantee safe passage through the straight due to the [00:01:13] US naval blockade. officials in Washington had hoped an agreement to open the [00:01:17] straight would happen this [00:01:19] in week. Iran's deputy foreign minister says details on the deal with [00:01:23] Oman are being [00:01:26] of finalized. [00:01:38] and those by literal site agreements with oman, because it's not [00:01:42] just map, these fundamental agreements with Oman have been mostly [00:01:46] completed, meaning we have made significant progress in our [00:01:50] discussions with Oman, and this progress is on the verge of being [00:01:53] finalized. [00:01:57] Areza Hatomy has the latest on those talks [00:01:59] from the Iranian. capital Iranian officials [00:02:03] are very optimistic, they [00:02:06] say that the progress has been significant, they're [00:02:10] positive about [00:02:11] the the negotiations, ongoing negotiations between Iran [00:02:15] and Oman, of course Iranians say Iranians say [00:02:19] that talks have not concluded as of [00:02:22] yet, but [00:02:24] of talks are very close to successful [00:02:27] conclusion as said by Iran's... [00:02:38] Well basically basically Iran and Oman are designating [00:02:41] of two roots, inbound lane in the north [00:02:45] of the straight of formus, completely in Iranian [00:02:48] territorial waters and an outbound route in southern street [00:02:52] of formus close to Omani coastal [00:02:55] waters, report suggests that Iran is going to have full [00:03:00] control over the northern lane and half [00:03:02] control over the southern lane. Iran said [00:03:06] that the previous roots in the straight of [00:03:10] arms did not guarantee its national security and [00:03:14] harmed this national security, because Iran argues that the United [00:03:17] States has used [00:03:19] the straight of armus for military purposes in the [00:03:22] past. These two inbound and [00:03:26] outbound lanes are [00:03:28] of temporary, they will be valid for. two to four months and then after [00:03:32] that a permanent median lane will [00:03:35] be designated and announced by Iran and Oman, so we are waiting [00:03:39] for the talks to be finalized and for Iran and [00:03:43] Oman to issue a joint statement about the future [00:03:47] administration [00:03:48] of the straight of. President Trump says [00:03:52] talks with Iran are still ongoing despite Tehran earlier [00:03:55] denying holding direct negotiations with the [00:03:58] US. "I'd rather make [00:04:01] deal because I don't want to kill people, I do not want to [00:04:05] kill people, but at some point we're going to, we [00:04:08] had, we were, we were set for the biggest [00:04:11] attack of any attack, and we've hit them very hard [00:04:15] for the last few months, but we were, we were all set for the [00:04:19] biggest attack since World War II, and they called me [00:04:22] and they said, please don't do it, let's talk, and then they don't, they said, we never [00:04:26] said that, you know what, the fake news [00:04:29] of knows they..." did say that, but we are talking, let's see what [00:04:32] happens. - Craig Boswell is life [00:04:36] for us now in Washington, [00:04:38] so Craig, what is the Trump administration right now saying about [00:04:42] the status [00:04:46] of of these negotiations with Iran and how close they are claiming deal actually [00:04:48] is? [00:04:53] Well, you play that clip there from Donald Trump [00:04:56] in a campaign stop in Las Vegas, so just a passing reference. from the US [00:05:00] president tonight cuz he's trying to get back on the economy, but for [00:05:04] the bigger picture on this on Iran, the US president has [00:05:08] in the last 24 hours been more than optimistic about this, in fact it was [00:05:12] less. 24 hours ago, we should said we should know within 48 [00:05:15] hours whether this deal has been struck, saying it is very close uh, we've had [00:05:19] uh, [00:05:20] you played the clip that uh most the framework deal has been worked [00:05:24] out, but the administration falls into kind of two camps here [00:05:28] right, hope and concern, there is hope that this this gets [00:05:31] resolved and there's hope that this is something that they can move [00:05:35] on from and donald trump can claim a win, there is concerned that in [00:05:39] this deal there will be fees that will be... by Iran, [00:05:43] something that would be seen as a defeat for US president Donald [00:05:46] Trump, so that is some that's the other side, they don't want to fall into this, so [00:05:50] Donald Trump kind of standing in two places here, saying that there is [00:05:54] deal that is imminent, but yet, as you heard in that clip uh, [00:05:58] threatening those uh, that this is the last chance for Iran to [00:06:01] negotiate, or we're going to hit them hard, so still holding out the threat [00:06:05] while hoping this particular part the differences of opinion over the straight [00:06:09] of Homus can be worked out soon, back to you, and given the... optimistic tone [00:06:13] coming from the White House about reaching an agreement with Iran, is [00:06:17] that confidence genuine or does it appear to be masking deeper [00:06:21] concerns after previous near [00:06:23] misses? [00:06:35] does feel like, and I'll caviot this by saying, we've been here [00:06:39] before, this does feel like the momentum is moving towards... some [00:06:42] type of an agreement on the straight of hormos uh [00:06:46] so that it does feel like that, so this could be the administration [00:06:50] really on the face expressing optimism. now do they know the details [00:06:54] of what's in this framework deal, that remains to be seen, so they [00:06:58] could be playing their cards close to the vest saying, well we hope this works [00:07:02] out, or they know something and they're just not trying to say too much, [00:07:05] so we don't know, time will certainly tell, donald trump has said [00:07:09] we'd know within the 48 hours what's in this at [00:07:13] perhaps even by Friday, they said earlier this week that we would know by [00:07:17] Wednesday, so here we are issuing these time frames uh on the [00:07:21] straightform moves, so they must also feel then that something is [00:07:24] moving at least in the right [00:07:46] to be closing in on this deal to uh reopen the straight of [00:07:49] hm, potentially allowing energy exports to resume [00:07:53] through one the world's most important shipping lanes, but how significant [00:07:57] would uh this agreement be for global energy [00:08:00] markets? mean, the markets have been [00:08:03] extremely tight ever since the war began, there's been a [00:08:07] serious serious shortage of of 10 to 12 mbd that has [00:08:11] just disappeared from global. markets for the last four months and [00:08:15] even though prices have been kept under control by Chinese release [00:08:19] of strategic reserves or by Donald Trump's [00:08:22] oil market manipulation through [00:08:25] news dropping on Fridays and news dropping on Sundays, the [00:08:29] overall physical market has been under tremendous [00:08:33] stress and from the physical market to the products market of [00:08:37] diesel of of jet fuel, of fertilizers of all the [00:08:41] things that have been disrupted. in the homus crisis, so any [00:08:45] deal um, even if it's a temporary one will [00:08:48] alleviate that stress, and you're a you're [00:08:51] a net zero guy, so from that perspective, has all this [00:08:54] disruption on the straight of homo strengthen the argument for [00:08:58] investing more rapidly away from fossil fuels [00:09:01] towards renewable energy and alternative supply [00:09:05] chains, mean i would have said that that [00:09:09] is a possibility or that is what perhaps government should be [00:09:12] showing, but the last four months have seen a very [00:09:16] rapid, not just realization, but action by governments [00:09:20] towards finding themselves alternative [00:09:22] supplies, finding themselves cheap and easy [00:09:26] availability of Chinese clean energy goods of EV, solar [00:09:30] panels, batteries have surged. In the last four months, we've had [00:09:34] about 25 billion dollars of sales every month of solar [00:09:38] panels evs and batteries from China to the rest the [00:09:42] world. "we've had basically lot of policy being passed by [00:09:45] governments as they realize that this is just fundamentally a world [00:09:49] in which fossil fuels are going to be insecure because the United [00:09:53] States military cannot guarantee their safe and continuous [00:09:57] passage out the Persian Gulf and so what we've [00:10:00] seen is governments passing policies and consumers [00:10:04] taking matters into their own hands and pressing by [00:10:08] by on those solar panels and EVs that are just [00:10:11] easily" " accessible: so just just taking [00:10:15] a more kind of long-term view of this, has this crisis permanently [00:10:19] changed at all, how governments are going to think about energy [00:10:22] security? yeah, the main thing is: not, it's not just this [00:10:26] crisis, right? it's now two fossil fuel shocks in the last four [00:10:29] years with the Ukraine war having a similarly disruptive [00:10:33] impact that on gas markets and now on oil [00:10:36] markets. so what we basically seen is in the face of two [00:10:40] uncertain shocks, governments all over reconsidering their [00:10:44] energy policy and basically realizing that they need to [00:10:48] have source of energy that is not going to be [00:10:51] as disrupted by geopolitical events. "and [00:10:55] that one 10 years ago would have been, you would have been hard pressed to say [00:10:59] that renewables are can satisfy, that's that [00:11:03] cheapness and that scale, but that's no longer true, they are now easily [00:11:06] accessible in the 2020s after a bunch of governments, [00:11:10] European governments, American governments, Chinese governments in particular, have [00:11:14] passed enormous supports of, hundreds of billions of dollars worth of policy [00:11:18] support to renewables, so now we are a stage where all governments are [00:11:21] routinely sort of at every crisis. They have moved [00:11:25] away from oil and gas towards much more cheaper and stable [00:11:29] and secure renewable supplies often produced at [00:11:40] have claimed another attack a Saudi oil tanker, the [00:11:43] second [00:11:44] a day. The latest vessel was struck in the Gulf of Aden. Early on [00:11:48] Wednesday, the group said it fired missiles a tanker in the north the Red Sea [00:11:52] la. Last month, the hoothies declared naval blockade. Saudi Arabia in [00:11:56] response to what they describe as a Saudi siege on [00:11:59] Yemen. Hatim Bazian is a professor of Middle Eastern cultures [00:12:03] and languages at UC Berkeley. He says the attacks by the [00:12:07] Houties are impacting maritime [00:12:09] traffic. Babel mandib uh [00:12:12] traffic right now is almost down by [00:12:14] 50%. And [00:12:18] many ships that are opting to go around to [00:12:22] the great to the state of. good hope down South [00:12:26] Africa that delays the trade [00:12:30] and have an impact, it's also the more important is the insurance, so [00:12:34] if you gonna navigate through Babel, the insurance [00:12:37] level on these merchant chips will be [00:12:41] high, so many will up not to go through it because the cost [00:12:44] is prohibitive, and I think increasingly there is [00:12:48] pressure between the straight of hormones being right now subject to [00:12:52] the current developments in there and and then you have b [00:12:56] two important chuck points in the global trade [00:12:59] system which has been actually the the hub of trade [00:13:03] for almost the past 500 plus years, so I think the [00:13:07] impact is there. adding to this, I think we need to [00:13:11] calculate into this dynamics, the development [00:13:14] in Somaliland and the fact that the [00:13:18] Israelis with the help of United Arab Emirates are also [00:13:22] developing some type of base in there. that will have an [00:13:26] impact, whether that will be brought into the conflict [00:13:29] immediately, or we're going to see a protracted [00:13:32] conflict occurring at the babil mandib [00:13:36] and somali land being brought into [00:13:39] the navigation and into the ease of trade in that region, [00:13:43] so I think there are many, many different players that are having [00:13:46] their hands in the babil mandib and in the [00:13:50] houthes were attempting to have leverage over their [00:13:54] positionality. in the conflict with Saudi Arabia that's been on [00:13:57] for seven [00:13:58] years. [00:14:04] Israel has continued its attacks in southern Lebanon despite ongoing [00:14:08] peace talks in Rome. the strikes also hit targets inside [00:14:12] designated pilot zone for the withdraw of Israeli troops. [00:14:16] Israel says it is in response to ceasefire violations from [00:14:19] Heizbollah who are not included in the talks. at least one person was killed [00:14:23] in the town of Tebnin. Israel says two of its soldiers were [00:14:27] also killed in a landmine explosion. [00:14:31] Israel has also issued new displacement order for village in [00:14:34] southern Lebanon, which according to the UN, is the first since [00:14:38] the latest ceasefire announcement in June. [00:14:42] This new order comes as displaced families have been cautiously making their way back [00:14:46] to their homes in southern Lebanon in recent weeks, underscoring how [00:14:50] fragile the situation remains and the uncertainty that people continue to [00:14:54] face. Hostilities continue to affect civilians in southern [00:14:57] Lebanon. Demolition operations, shelling and other military activity [00:15:01] are damaging homes, agricultural land and civilian [00:15:04] infrastructure. Many families are returning to severely damaged [00:15:08] homes, limited access to essential services, economic [00:15:12] hardship, and the threat posed by unexploded [00:15:15] ordinance. Aprianka Navani has more in this [00:15:19] from the Lebanese Capital, Beirot. Well, absolutely, [00:15:23] this is not what one wants. to see happening on the [00:15:26] ground when the diplomats in Rome are trying to [00:15:30] further this peace accord that was struck on June the [00:15:34] 26th, this framework between the U.S. [00:15:37] Israel and Lebanon, these were very intense strikes, and it comes [00:15:41] off of a week that things were already escalating in [00:15:45] southern Lebanon. In fact, one the things that we saw Israel do [00:15:49] in southern Lebanon today was issue this so-called [00:15:53] evacuation order, which here in Lebanon is called [00:15:56] a displacement order, calling on people to...
