[00:01:33] in [00:01:37] Welcome back, you're watching the news hour here on TRT [00:01:39] of World, quick recamp of our top stories: the latest round of peace talks between [00:01:43] Israel and Lebanon, they've just [00:01:44] of wrapped up in Rome, reports suggest the prisoner exchange has been arranged to [00:01:49] in signal good faith, but Israeli strikes on Lebanon have not [00:01:52] ceased in the meantime, and Iran and [00:01:56] Oman [00:01:57] a are finalizing an interim deal to reopen the state of... moves under [00:02:00] the agreement Iran would manage ships [00:02:03] of of entering the gulf, outbound traffic that would be overseen by [00:02:06] Oman, they have yet though to agree on few things including the [00:02:10] in transit fees. And Donald Trump's hinting a broader deal with the Rand could be [00:02:13] getting close. He says that lot though, he insists the US is sing seeking [00:02:19] of a diplomatic resolution, and he has promised more military action if a broader deal [00:02:22] of isn't agreed. Let's bring in [00:02:24] of William Lawrence now, he joins us from Washington DC, he's a former US [00:02:28] diplomat, pleasure to speak to. Uh, I remember [00:02:32] being on air when this war began February 28th and I was reporting [00:02:36] on huge bombardment, not just the US, Israel, [00:02:40] bombing Iran. At that moment in time you thought, this is nasty and it's very [00:02:43] one-sided. Fast forward to today, [00:02:45] in and we're listening to [00:02:46] of Iran, negotiating its own deal over control [00:02:49] of the straight of horm. Donald Trump, pretty [00:02:53] of silent, unable to win the conflict. What are we witnessing here? Is this is this [00:02:57] power shift? [00:03:01] um, as [00:03:02] a someone said [00:03:02] in a webinar I just hosted, uh, Israel is uh, sorry, [00:03:06] Iran is playing um, [00:03:09] very, not very good hand, very well, so they [00:03:13] have lot of strategic deficits, but they've played them [00:03:17] expertly for number of reasons, including understanding how [00:03:21] international markets, US domestic politics, and [00:03:25] the number of missiles and and interceptors that the US [00:03:28] of has used in the war that are now... pleeded significantly uh to [00:03:32] leverage better positions, they've also had this very [00:03:35] interesting on again, off again negotiation with Oman, which seems to be [00:03:39] bearing some fruit now, whereas those negotiations had failed in [00:03:43] previous rounds, to to you rejger, [00:03:47] reconfigure um uh traffic through the uh through the [00:03:51] straight uh, but it's it's sort of done a gun point, both [00:03:55] the US and it's negotiating with Iran and Iran in this [00:03:58] negotiation with US and and with Oman is [00:04:02] shooting at ships, [00:04:04] of civilian controlled ships and that and and deals that come [00:04:08] out of point, gun-pointed [00:04:12] of negotiations aren't necessarily sustainable deals, and that's why we [00:04:16] had the mis the memorandum of misunderstanding, that's why [00:04:19] of we've had number of ceasefires that didn't really [00:04:21] of lead to the next steps that were forecasted by the various [00:04:24] sides, and right now the negotiations don't seem to be [00:04:28] about all of [00:04:29] a those in issues. [00:04:31] in in the 14 points plan, it's just about the straight of hermus, [00:04:35] which [00:04:36] of went from being one [00:04:37] of the things Iran was negotiating to now the basis [00:04:40] of upon which it negotiates everything else, it's ability to [00:04:43] of turn the the straight on and off, [00:04:45] and and that changing dynamic means that Iran has been very shrewd in how [00:04:49] it navigated this conflict, if you were an [00:04:53] American citizen and you turn the news on and you see that Iran is [00:04:56] negotiating how it's going to let chips through. in the [00:05:00] straight of horm, I mean, the optics are not great for the [00:05:04] US leadership. [00:05:05] in How of do you think Donald Trump would perceive any deal on on coordinating [00:05:09] shipping without him even being involved? [00:05:14] "well, first of all, it was Trump that originally proposed [00:05:18] that the tols could be chargged in Hormus, and deal could be [00:05:22] worked out with the US could be control could control it, he's been all over the map and [00:05:26] control the straight of hormous and confused the American public by doing [00:05:29] so. The average American is against this [00:05:33] war, doesn't like its effect on the US economy, doesn't [00:05:37] like Trump's handling the ward, Trump's approval ratings as I'm sure you've been [00:05:40] reporting, are at an all-time..." low [00:05:43] in the lowest in modern American history, other than Nixon right before his [00:05:46] impeachment, and and so things [00:05:50] aren't good for Trump right now, and any messaging he's doing for the [00:05:53] American public, and the White House will privately admit, there have been many [00:05:57] reports of this, and I've even talked to people recently who work in the white humster saying our [00:06:01] messaging has been terrible on this war, so the Trump wants [00:06:05] out, but he can't figure a way out that doesn't make him look bad, and [00:06:09] uh, and then so then we get into these escalatory. [00:06:12] spirals with the Iran escalating too and then back to the [00:06:15] negotiating table, it seems within a few days and [00:06:19] all that means that this could get much worse, [00:06:23] neither side wants it to get much worse, and we're back to the same set of issues we've been [00:06:27] dealing with it for a couple of weeks now, which is the US wants to force the [00:06:31] opening the straight without making too many concessions [00:06:34] and [00:06:36] the that's the negotiation that needs to happen. just very quick one [00:06:39] about you talked about poor communication, the... Iranian president, [00:06:43] masosishgan said that communication with his [00:06:47] supreme leader is difficult, I mean that's [00:06:49] a strange comment to throw out there, what did you make of [00:06:51] that? uh, that [00:06:55] he's very protected in some sort of underground or [00:06:58] or very hidden bunker, that we know that he has medical issues, there's a [00:07:02] lot of speculation around that, um, and the [00:07:06] way in which the US has been framing it in their public communications is that we're not [00:07:10] dealing with one Iranian regime, we're dealing with with a [00:07:13] fragmented regime in multiple voices uh [00:07:17] so all of this lines up the way each side is reporting uh uh [00:07:21] how things look and uh everyone knows that the decision making [00:07:25] process has been very slow with Iran even when there's [00:07:28] a short fuse decision to be made on some aspect the cease fire or [00:07:32] something so [00:07:34] uh um the slowness the Iranians the impatience the [00:07:37] Americans is another cultural dynamic of this uh impass [00:07:41] we're in right now. and and and you know my advice [00:07:44] to to the Americans is slow down a bit and my advice to the Iranians is speed up a [00:07:48] bit uh because uh we'll get better deal if we're sort of working at [00:07:52] the same pace. fascinating stuff, appreciate it. William, William Lawrence, [00:07:56] former US diplomat, my [00:07:57] guest. Thank [00:08:01] you. tensions continue to escalate [00:08:05] between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, the hoothies say that they have killed [00:08:08] and wounded hundreds of Yemeny government troops in marib [00:08:12] and they say this is response to an alleged military [00:08:16] buildup in by Riad. Let's go to Mohammed Alatab who [00:08:20] is insana to get more on this. Mohammed, this [00:08:24] escalation, [00:08:25] how big is the concern that this actually could develop into something [00:08:29] else, a wide scale internal and regional [00:08:32] conflict. [00:08:38] Yes, we are talking about this latest operation. [00:08:43] that that has been revealed by the his military [00:08:47] spokes person says that they have targeted this these [00:08:50] positions in in ruway and [00:08:53] also [00:08:54] in in areas in hadramot and marip he says that they have targeted these [00:08:58] areas as there are some military [00:09:02] built up there they says that they have was a preemptive [00:09:06] strikes and they have he has also warned the [00:09:10] yemenis there not to join the uh military camps [00:09:13] in these areas, while the senior official [00:09:17] the Yemani government says that the the the [00:09:21] group is under mounting pressure, that's that's why [00:09:24] and they have carried out these operations [00:09:28] aga as he mentioned or described at [00:09:31] his at his account at x [00:09:35] website, he also mentioned that the there is all [00:09:39] the only way is to end what he described as the uh [00:09:42] shasco against the internationally recognized government, while [00:09:46] the the military spokes person the hutis, he has made it [00:09:50] clear that they will continue their what they have already uh [00:09:54] declared, the uh the operations the sage for sage, they [00:09:57] want [00:09:58] to to wais more pressure on Saudi Arabia, we are talking about nearly eight [00:10:02] ships that have been targeted by the uh the houties known [00:10:06] as the ansar allah, they have also been able [00:10:09] to to turn uh back nearly [00:10:12] 29 vessels, so we are talking about since the [00:10:16] beginning the their blockade, they have been able to [00:10:20] attack vessels near the Gulf of Aiden and also off [00:10:24] the coast. the saudi saudi seaport of [00:10:28] Yamba so there they have a [00:10:31] wide they have as they have used this kinds of [00:10:35] missiles and drones and so so their hands [00:10:39] could reach many areas according to to the latest [00:10:43] operations that we have witnessed and observed uh we are we are talking [00:10:47] about that the the latest escalation and [00:10:50] the development while they have targeted during their what they have described as [00:10:54] a preemptive sc strikes against government forces [00:10:58] that [00:10:58] they accused as they are have been affiliated with Saudi Arabia [00:11:02] and they they want Yemanies not to join the built-up [00:11:06] camps there so we we could witness this [00:11:09] wider escalation in case the internal [00:11:13] operations and clashes between both sides [00:11:17] uh have started about resumed or we are talking about this [00:11:20] latest operation as the one the deadliest uh [00:11:24] attacks. since the agreement brokered [00:11:27] by the United Nations in 2022 uh has [00:11:31] been ended when the huties declared its end when [00:11:35] the yemen sana international airport was bombed [00:11:39] in July 13. Mohammed thank you mohammed alatab in [00:11:43] so [00:11:51] Israel's forces continue to storm the calandia refugee camp. the [00:11:55] occupied west bank at least 16 more Palestinians have been [00:11:58] injured, 60 people have been arrested in the raids. This a day [00:12:02] after the Palestinian Red Creson said eight people were injured when Israeli [00:12:06] forces sent reinforcements into the Calandia camp, local media [00:12:09] reporting the Israely army distributed leaflets that said a large scale [00:12:13] raid was being carried out there. [00:12:17] Let's go to Zentahan, our correspondent who is infort a cab [00:12:21] in occupied East Jerusalem, you talked to us yesterday about the [00:12:25] violence, it sounds like we've been getting more the same today. what [00:12:29] have Israeli troops been [00:12:30] doing? [00:12:34] yes, exactly, it's been 40, more than 41 hours [00:12:38] since Israel began its large scale military assault on [00:12:42] the kalania refugee camp, and now we're a bit further from [00:12:46] the entrance to the camp than we were previously reporting earlier in the [00:12:49] day, because israely forces prevented journalists [00:12:53] from covering their... moved them from the entire area and blockaded it off and [00:12:57] they fired directly at us - stun [00:13:00] grenades uh the the assault is still ongoing with [00:13:04] hundreds of soldiers as well as special forces, police and [00:13:07] paramilitary uh border police [00:13:11] uh operating inside the camp, arresting Palestinians, mass [00:13:15] raiding homes and destroying contents these homes [00:13:19] vandalizing them as we often see in the occupied West Bank a [00:13:23] daily basis now there are upwards of 16 thousand [00:13:26] people inside this camp that are under siege for [00:13:30] the second day, there is no one allowed in or out with the [00:13:34] with the um entrances into the camp closed off [00:13:38] and there is a curfew, no one is allowed in the streets even to get anything [00:13:42] eat or um or so, the Israeli military has also [00:13:46] prevented and obstructed the work of ambulances trying [00:13:49] to evacuate those 16 people who are injured, the [00:13:53] majority them with severe physical. assault including [00:13:56] multiple men in their early to late 50s, so you're talking [00:14:00] about elderly people being beaten up, and what's happening is that the Israeli [00:14:04] military breaks down people's home, front [00:14:07] doors, barges in or storms the house with [00:14:10] 10 to 15 soldiers, they carry out physical assault against the [00:14:14] residence, they carry out mass interrogations, over at [00:14:18] least 60 people have been interrogated so far [00:14:22] and arrested according to the Palestinian prisoner. [00:14:25] society and it's very [00:14:28] important to note two things: one, this is a main [00:14:31] road, it is very vital artery, as you can [00:14:35] see, there should be cars bumper to bumper, but the movement is very [00:14:39] weak, this road ties between the north and [00:14:43] the center the occupied west bank with Jerusalem and the south, so [00:14:47] the fact that they are blocking the movement here means that they are [00:14:51] affecting tens of thousands of people who move through here every day, [00:14:55] for work, for healthcare, for other their own businesses. In addition [00:14:59] to that, the Israeli military has been demolishing Palestinian [00:15:02] businesses, they've been carrying [00:15:05] out demolitions of Palestinian car washes, clothes, [00:15:09] stores and other businesses here [00:15:12] in around the Colandia refugee camp [00:15:16] and near the Callandia military checkpoint, and the last note is [00:15:20] very important to make, there are no, I mean the Israeli military is talking [00:15:24] about this being..." military operation, but there are no armed [00:15:27] elements inside these camps that are organized any way that would put up a [00:15:31] front or to resist Israel's military incursion, so [00:15:35] this is really a one-sided a... salt the Israeli [00:15:39] military is talking about quote on quote thorting terrorism, but Palestinians [00:15:43] here on the ground, especially residents the camp say this is [00:15:47] yet another attempt to end the issue of palestinian [00:15:50] refugees. onee sided assault in the kaland of refugee camp, [00:15:54] according to Zena there our correspondent Zena Tahan, thank [00:15:57] you. The Ugandan Parliament has [00:16:01] approved deployment of troops to Gaza. This is part of an international [00:16:04] stabilization mission and it comes after a direct request from the [00:16:08] US president Donald Trump to the Ugandan president Yawari [00:16:12] Musevini. Isabel Nakeria has more on this from [00:16:15] Kampala. According to the Uganda People's [00:16:19] defense act, any deployment outside the [00:16:22] country has to be approved by the parliament. And [00:16:26] today afternoon uh Parliament officially [00:16:30] uh approved that deployment to the Gaza Strip and some the [00:16:34] terms and the conditions that um this deployment. [00:16:37] is uh supposed to take is that uh [00:16:41] this force has to be neutral force, according to [00:16:45] humanitarian law, they need not take any sides and [00:16:48] they will act according to that law and not take sides and [00:16:52] interfere with any the war that is taking place there, and [00:16:56] the forces are supposed to maintain public [00:16:59] order, they are supposed to facilitate a [00:17:03] humanitarian corridor for any aid ' [00:17:07] no distribution and they'll also have to engage any other [00:17:11] security engagements, but also they [00:17:15] are supposed to be a strategic [00:17:18] position on the Israeli side called the [00:17:22] Karim shalom crossing and that crossing [00:17:26] is designed to accommodate up to 500 soldiers. till [00:17:30] now we do not know how many soldiers will be deployed [00:17:34] for that mission and that will directly be the [00:17:37] president's role to [00:17:39] you know determine how many soldiers will be deployed, so [00:17:43] far we know that the debate in parliament was heated and some [00:17:47] members of parliament were against it, because [00:17:51] according to some missions that Uganda has taken part in, [00:17:55] for example Somalia, South Sudan [00:17:57] and the Central Africa Republic, [00:18:01] many times uh the funding issue was a [00:18:04] problem. [00:18:10] Thailand's hosting Myanmar's hunter chief turned [00:18:14] president on his first official visit he's [00:18:18] seeking to end Myanmar's diplomatic isolation since he overthrew [00:18:22] the elected government a 2021 coup Christina Shimish reports [00:18:26] since swapping his military uniform [00:18:30] for civilian clothing ex-hunter chief now [00:18:33] Myanmar's leader Min has been on. [00:18:37] diplomatic drive to pull his price state back [00:18:41] to the diplomacy table. now five years after he led [00:18:45] acu against the elected government in Myanmar, neighboring [00:18:49] Thailand has rolled out the red carpet for men on [00:18:52] lands first official state tour. [00:18:56] Myanmar is on the path of democracy and heading towards a better future. [00:19:00] As new government, we are currently working on prioritizing stability, [00:19:04] peace and national reconciliation. [00:19:08] 21 then general Min Onlan launched a military [00:19:12] coup overthrowing the Democratic leader on [00:19:15] Sansuchi, it triggered a civil war that [00:19:18] has killed at least 100,000 people from both [00:19:22] sides. Since then, the Association of Southeast [00:19:26] Asian nations banned Myanmar's leaders from [00:19:29] attending summits in April this year though, Min on [00:19:33] Land was named president after staged elections. [00:19:37] democracy watchdogs called it a sham. Thailand [00:19:41] has led the efforts to normalize tires between Myanmar [00:19:45] and the other 11 ASEan nations. [00:19:49] Political analysts say if Myanmar was invited back to [00:19:52] ASEAN, it could also open a pathway to western [00:19:55] countries that oppose Minlan's [00:19:59] military regime. A peaceful and stable [00:20:02] Myanmar is not only in Thailand's interest [00:20:06] as closed. neighbor, it is essential to [00:20:10] as unity and regional stability. Min [00:20:13] Anlan has also visited India, China and [00:20:17] ASEAN member Layos and last month he [00:20:21] met with Malaysia's prime minister and promised to accept the [00:20:24] return of 300 thousand Rohinga refugees from [00:20:28] Bangladesh. The timeline remains unclear. [00:20:32] He also marked his 100th day as president on [00:20:35] Monday and addressed his administration accusing [00:20:39] Asian's five-point consensus peace plan of [00:20:42] discrimination and said they would pursue their own [00:20:46] solution to the country's conflict issue of. [00:20:50] Myanmar is clear test, the five [00:20:53] point consensus remains ASEAN's guiding [00:20:57] framework. In Bangkok, Myanmar and Thailand signed [00:21:01] labor cooperation memorandum of understanding. Min on [00:21:05] land is also expected a business forum and government [00:21:09] dinner. But Human rights campaignis say Bangkok shouldn't [00:21:13] be warmly welcoming men on land who has been sanctioned by [00:21:17] several western nations for crimes against. [00:21:25] Longsani is co-founder of forces of renewal for Southeast Asia, [00:21:29] he says the sincerity about Thailand and Myanmar is [00:21:33] doubtful in this engagement. The visit [00:21:36] of Myanmar military leader may to [00:21:40] Thailand is deeply problematic for [00:21:44] number of reasons. Number one, Myanmar [00:21:47] military is also connected. with lot of [00:21:51] transnational uh uh crime, [00:21:55] drug trafficking and other units, these crime centers are [00:21:59] not simply run by mafia, and because they [00:22:03] are transnational crimes, all the neighboring [00:22:06] state authorities are involved, i would i dare [00:22:10] say some the tai [00:22:12] authorities in the security [00:22:15] sector, immigration sector themselves uh can [00:22:19] be... reasonably assumed to be involved, but there's a [00:22:23] deeper problem with Mailline's visit, and mayoline [00:22:27] is a uh is one the top [00:22:30] generals or the general that has international [00:22:34] arrest warrant issue by a court in [00:22:37] Argentina a universal jurisdiction case, [00:22:41] and interpol has that arrest warrant, it's like [00:22:45] Netanyahu with rest warrant by ICC, [00:22:49] and so... that Thailand is rolling out red [00:22:53] carpet to an international war criminal. Secondly, [00:22:57] Thailand is currently engaged a [00:23:00] military conflict with another neighbor, [00:23:04] Cambodia, and so Thailand promoting or claiming to [00:23:08] promote peace in Myanmar through so-called [00:23:11] calibrated engagement while bombing [00:23:15] Cambodia and attacking Cambodian the villages [00:23:19] along the border. is really problematic, those are two [00:23:22] issues that need to be uh, [00:23:24] you know uh kept in the spotlight and not uh [00:23:28] not be marginalized in the interest of you know [00:23:32] bilateral trade, that's [00:23:36] almost the end the news hour so for myself and the team here in Istanbul, thanks so much for your [00:23:40] company, we're going to throw it over now to my colleague Taib Aiden who's got your business [00:23:43] update. [00:23:50] Asian markets were mostly down on Thursday with tech stocks back under pressure [00:23:54] after four-day rebound. South Korea's tech heavy cosby led [00:23:57] losses slipping 4.5% dragged by SK Hinix, [00:24:01] Samsung Electronics and Soul Semiconductor. In Japan, Soft [00:24:05] Bank Group dropped 4% while chip equipment Maker Tokyo [00:24:08] Electron fell more than 5%.
