[00:03:19] of [00:03:27] in [00:03:27] of [00:03:38] of [00:04:08] What comes to mind when [00:04:10] in you imagine a [00:04:15] of school? kids sitting at their [00:04:17] desks, perhaps a teacher in front [00:04:21] struggling to keep their attention, or a school [00:04:25] bell ringing through the [00:04:27] in hallways when i "I think of [00:04:30] school, I think of chock. I still picture it in my [00:04:34] hands, nervously trying [00:04:36] of to solve math problem on the [00:04:38] blackbard. Welcome [00:04:42] to the world. [00:04:46] My own school days are long gone, but for my [00:04:49] daughter, they have yet to [00:04:51] begin. [00:04:55] of By the time she will go..." [00:05:00] to school, I worry that she'll be confronted with more frightening [00:05:03] things than solving math problems in front [00:05:06] of the class. 19 children and two teachers were [00:05:10] killed at rob elementary school in. Texas, city leaders in [00:05:14] Uvalde are calling for privacy and compassion for the families the [00:05:18] victims and survivors. I remember watching the news about the [00:05:21] school shooting in Uvaldi. My daughter was two months old and [00:05:25] sleeping in my lab, oblivious to what was happening just a couple towns [00:05:29] away from [00:05:30] us. [00:05:34] Since that day I keep wondering, how can we keep her [00:05:38] safe a world like [00:05:40] this? This morning, flags are [00:05:43] flying at half staff across Texas, marking one year since one the [00:05:47] worst school shootings in American history. One year ago today, an [00:05:51] 18-year-old gunman broke into an elementary school in Uvaldi, killing [00:05:55] 19 children and two teachers. For many, the reminders [00:05:58] the tragedy are everywhere, with an uptick in school shootings [00:06:02] and the fears that come with them, lot of Texas parents are [00:06:06] wondering how best to protect their kids while setting them up [00:06:10] for success in the future. [00:06:18] talking you, good afternoon, I'm looking for a daycare for my daughter, I wanted to [00:06:21] get her some more information if that's possible, yes [00:06:25] mam, it might be a little bit of an awkward question, but do you guys have some sort of [00:06:29] safety plan in case of a school shooting happening? [00:06:33] um, we're getting introduced to all this shooting stuff just [00:06:36] now, okay, um, so we we do lockdowns, [00:06:40] we do um, we do those kind of... drills um, but right now [00:06:44] with active shooter we are in the process of um [00:06:48] figuring all that stuff out. okay, it's just we never thought that we would [00:06:52] have to be going to training for this. yeah, i'm asking because i'm i [00:06:56] just moved here from belgium about four years ago [00:06:59] so um and we never had a school shooting in Belgium [00:07:01] so for me this is all new and i'm a little bit worried about it. yeah, i [00:07:05] had been born and raised here in Austin. um and this [00:07:09] whole yuvanda thing i think that kind of hit us home. um [00:07:13] being so close [00:07:14] toalde, [00:07:18] but yes mam, um, we're hoping that never happens to us, um, [00:07:22] and we do have locked doors and all that good stuff, um, [00:07:25] okay, but um, a shooter plan, not [00:07:57] welcome, julie, thank you, i am [00:08:00] originally from venezuela, over there we deal [00:08:04] with another type of safeness, so [00:08:08] you go out and you know that you cannot carry your necklace, you know that you need [00:08:12] to be paying attention of your surrounders and stuff like that, it's whole other [00:08:16] level, but you did not have the fear to send your kid [00:08:20] to school, i can't record going to [00:08:24] school feeling scared of my mom talking to me, [00:08:27] mean if he somebody comes to the school to true you, you got now where to [00:08:31] go, so didn't grew up with that, so when zira would go [00:08:34] to this daycare, what would like a [00:08:38] the safety plan look like here, we are train. [00:08:43] for lockdowns and unsafe buildings and stuff like that, but an [00:08:46] active shooter we haven't, so that's why we wanted [00:08:50] to get a [00:08:51] training, [00:09:09] and if you look at last year, look at this. in [00:09:12] 2022, not a single week passed without at least [00:09:16] four mass shooting events, it's crazy, just as we [00:09:20] prepare for fires and floods and tornadoes and earthquakes, [00:09:23] sadly we got to start thinking about this stuff too, so what [00:09:27] we're going to talk about today is really the work of many many, i want the teachers to be the [00:09:31] best they can be, teaching the kids the proper way and shaping those [00:09:35] young minds, uh, i don't want them to be combat warriors, that's not fair, they [00:09:39] didn't sign up for that, but when i saw the numbers and 'wow, less than [00:09:43] half of early childhood programs aren't prepared for an active [00:09:47] shooter, we got to do something about that. [00:09:49] I don't want to minimize the impact that you all are going to have as the initial [00:09:53] responder, because your actions, or [00:09:56] inactions, are really going to set the stage on how this goes, [00:10:00] so sometimes hiding might be the best choice, sometimes running might be the best [00:10:04] choice, sometimes you're going to have no choice but to defend yourself, [00:10:07] right? So here they are, run, hide and fight, so [00:10:11] let's look at the run option.' Vamos [00:10:13] Natalia. [00:10:34] So we got everybody out in under 20 seconds, which is simply amazing, [00:10:38] really well, what do [00:10:38] you think? Very, very, very fast. Okay, good job, excellent, good [00:10:42] job guys, hey Dante, that was [00:10:46] better than Disney World for in terms of our hiding, that's [00:10:50] another option that we want to think [00:10:51] about. All... Objectives [00:10:55] are to stay out of sight, do put some barricades up to make it [00:10:59] as hard as possible to get to [00:11:00] us, and to [00:11:04] keep the kids as calm and as quiet as we possibly [00:11:07] can. [00:11:37] Now the last part the whole thing is fighting if we have [00:11:40] to, [00:11:47] we're really not just getting into a fair fight here, we're trying to defend and [00:11:51] survive, but now we have to... [00:11:55] thinking, okay, if I'm in there and I i'm tramped in there, I [00:11:59] have other way out, what am I going to do? Well, I'm going to grab this, right? [00:12:03] You, first thing I can find, what if somebody comes in, I can squirt him in the eyes, I can maybe hit [00:12:06] him over the head with this, I'm going to try to find anything that I can to defend [00:12:10] myself. [00:12:19] I just see those teachers standing there with like tools that they [00:12:23] find, like blocks and stuff, and I'm just... how on earth are [00:12:27] are they going to defend themselves with somebody coming in with like a machine [00:12:29] gun? [00:12:34] well i think there's a couple different things that we can you know think [00:12:37] about: pair of scissors is obviously not going to be very good weapon [00:12:41] of choice against a machine gun, but i got to tell you if i'm pinned [00:12:45] in room and that's [00:12:46] the only thing i have, i'm going to make [00:12:48] a go at it cuz i don't want it to be easy to kill me, i'm going to make it as difficult as [00:12:52] possible for that person, maybe i can't that person down, [00:12:56] maybe i can buy some time so that others aren't killed or injured, so that's kind of what [00:13:00] the mentality sadly has to [00:13:02] be, [00:13:22] i don't know how you you do a drill with... with [00:13:25] babies, [00:13:29] i don't know how that works to be [00:13:31] honest, [00:13:36] the drill that you you guys saw, are the kids [00:13:40] involved in in these drills? well, what we saw it was like [00:13:44] a training for the teachers, mhm, um, [00:13:47] and so i think the teachers have to do it with the kids a few times a [00:13:51] year, but we didn't really see that, and i also don't think that the kids realize. it yet [00:13:55] at that young age, [00:13:58] keep it, keep, but I am worried about when when the kids get older, so [00:14:02] if you put side there, when she gets older, when she starts to realize what [00:14:06] this is about, what it's going to do to [00:14:08] her, [00:14:18] these sounds are clues for you to tune in and get somewhere safe, [00:14:22] excuse me, we... will be talking [00:14:25] about staying [00:14:27] quiet. when we [00:14:30] hear lockdown, locks, lights [00:14:34] out of sight. we need to stay quiet in our hiding [00:14:38] place. look at this picture the quiet [00:14:41] mouth. what do you think it means to have a [00:14:44] quiet mouth? yes, [00:14:47] alice. it means you don't [00:14:51] talk? very good. it even means you don't [00:14:55] whisper. what would you do? you're not in the [00:14:58] classroom, you're not with another teacher, but maybe [00:15:02] you're on the way to the bathroom. you're all by yourself, and you might [00:15:06] hear announcement that says "run hide fight", or you might hear a noise that [00:15:10] sounds like a weapon, or maybe you see a bad guy and you're all by yourself [00:15:14] in the hallway. okay, what would you do in that situation? if [00:15:18] all the close our door and except one the first [00:15:21] graders, you can go in there and that should be number one, but let's..." say [00:15:25] that there is no way to go into another class because the [00:15:29] doors are are shut and they're locked or there's just nobody else in [00:15:33] here and you don't know what to do, you can hide somewhere on the playground, [00:15:37] okay? schools are a very safe place to be, you're safe [00:15:40] here, you did 21 laps, [00:15:44] nice, i forced my ankle, well maybe that's why your ankle [00:15:47] hurts, i saw [00:15:51] how was the rest of your lunch, i'm sorry i can only stay for few [00:15:54] minutes, all [00:15:57] right, you guys in lego world [00:15:59] now. [00:16:12] every day that I walk my children to school, I say, I love you, and I [00:16:16] watch them, and just breathe, because that's all I can [00:16:20] do, and hope that everyone is doing their [00:16:24] job to protect [00:16:25] them, [00:16:30] whether they want to or not, that this is their life, and they're [00:16:34] having to do these active shooter drills and lockdowns. [00:16:38] and they're playing war [00:16:40] games, what happens during your [00:16:43] drills? mommy doesn't know what you guys do, [00:16:47] well for the lockdown drills um um the [00:16:51] principal will say on the announcement, it's a lockdown [00:16:54] drill, lock your doors and we hide [00:16:57] behind our shelves, so but we [00:17:01] can't do anything else, sometimes whenever we do the videos no one ever [00:17:05] tells us, our teachers don't tell if it's a real one or [00:17:09] just practice so i get scared sometimes to see if [00:17:13] it's real or if it's just a [00:17:16] drill and if we [00:17:19] don't um get up and scooter chairs quietly and [00:17:23] we're a lot loud we start over and do it [00:17:27] again until we can make it good you want to show [00:17:31] me all right say the [00:17:34] drone so i can teachers lock your doors Teachers, [00:17:38] lock your doors, this is [00:17:39] lockdown, [00:17:55] my daughter said that uh, it helps her to [00:17:57] prepare and that makes me so [00:18:01] sad to think that she has to prepare for [00:18:05] such event. [00:18:23] Hi, nice to meet you, hi, thanks for being with us, no [00:18:26] problem, I a professor of public health in New Mexico State [00:18:30] University, um, my research has focused on how [00:18:34] schools are preparing and what would they do in? [00:18:37] schools [00:18:37] certain [00:18:45] situations, in [00:18:46] most your so neighborhood, my neighborhood have security [00:18:49] cameras, backpack checks, metal detectors, lock doors, [00:18:53] lockdown drill, preparing students for math shooting, it looks similar to the [00:18:57] questions that you've done, this is a [00:19:01] drill, I repeat, this is a drill, we are a level [00:19:05] three lockdown, need you to go down, lock the [00:19:08] door, the problem is they have not been able to stop a mass [00:19:12] shooting, that backside, get into the closet, go on the closet, turn [00:19:16] the light on until we get in there, the intruder is in the [00:19:19] lives, let's go, get the [00:19:23] chairs up there, let's go, the rest of you get in the closet, let's [00:19:26] go, get in the [00:19:28] closet, there is no [00:19:31] documented evidence that we could stop a mass shooting with this [00:19:35] kind of an approach. You're [00:19:38] quiet. Keep your hands to [00:19:41] yourself. [00:19:46] That's a typical American school now. It has become a war zone. [00:19:50] No one is asking, is this conducive to learning, [00:19:52] education? [00:19:57] Why are we creating this climate of fear? A [00:20:01] palace, a fortress. No place in the world would you see this a developed [00:20:05] nation. [00:20:09] "there are studies to show that kids have felt vulnerable and [00:20:13] distressed because these exposures and that's why the whole idea has [00:20:17] become [00:20:17] controversial, [00:20:27] we have fire drills, lockdown, [00:20:29] tornado, our last drill, [00:20:33] lockdown drill uh, we did like a full thing we..." [00:20:37] ripped apart the room, we grabbed tables and we shoved it at the [00:20:41] door like and it active and all all the kids were [00:20:45] scared and um i was scared because the the [00:20:49] mic did not say lockdown drill or didn't hear it [00:20:52] so i thought it was a real lockdown, i was trying my best to [00:20:56] hide and it made a little scared and [00:21:00] nervous because um didn't [00:21:03] i didn't feel safe at school, nobody feels [00:21:07] safe, nobody feels safe at [00:21:10] school, it's it's never really safe, kind of [00:21:14] it's not really safe [00:21:15] sometimes, i think it'll [00:21:19] probably happen in our school because [00:21:23] people sometimes go insane and they might want [00:21:26] to like take their anchor out on kids [00:21:30] so they might want to come to our school and like take their anchor out [00:21:34] on them by killing us [00:21:36] maybe i don't i [00:21:40] really don't like it because there's a lot of bad people in the world [00:21:43] yeah we try not to think about thomorts [00:21:46] or else we kind of get like uh like thinking about [00:21:50] got it like kind of like oh school shooting is going to happen [00:21:53] today yeah that's not something that you want to think about right yeah [00:21:57] no [00:22:06] wit about that okay there's no [00:22:08] possible i think that [00:22:12] um some the teachers should have like um a [00:22:15] pistol or something hidden in the classroom to protect the [00:22:19] students 'yeah, i think that too, [00:22:22] because um, because if the person does have a gun it [00:22:26] would be nice to have some protection like [00:22:29] 22 rifles, 22 long rifles, at least a bb gun [00:22:33] for our class ever for every single [00:22:36] class, it would it would cost a little bit, [00:22:39] but it it would be worth for the [00:22:42] school for keeping students [00:23:01] daughter will feel the same. When I was [00:23:05] kid, this never crossed my [00:23:06] mind, but I [00:23:10] guess things were different back then, and [00:23:14] this is [00:23:15] America. [00:23:31] I was a high school teacher for 20 [00:23:33] years, you started hearing of school shootings [00:23:37] and I would think what I would do, I didn't want to [00:23:41] um watch something happen or be victim, I wanted to be [00:23:45] proactive. I remember coming home from school and talking to [00:23:49] Jeff all the... time about different scenarios, what would I do if this happened, [00:23:53] what would I do if that happened, I want to protect my kids, [00:23:57] so we were able to collaborate together and come up with a [00:24:00] good system that would work for teachers. The [00:24:04] point of this is to have trained guardians, you can put signs on your school [00:24:08] that say we have armed staff, and that's a deterrent, you're you're [00:24:12] making the school a hard target, so somebody's not going to want to breach that, and [00:24:16] that's the number one goal the guardian program. Number two goal would be, [00:24:20] to actually use deadly force in the event that there's a [00:24:22] shooter, [00:24:29] so an important component about the school guardians is their [00:24:32] arms, [00:24:39] lot of people think we're just giving guns to teachers, and that's not [00:24:42] it, so part of our training includes [00:24:46] scenario training on the campus. [00:24:55] so we have someone that's a bad guy, we actually put the [00:24:59] guardian staff a shooting [00:25:01] situation where they have to defend themselves or [00:25:05] take out the [00:25:06] shooter, [00:25:10] and that's as close to realistic as we can make [00:25:13] it, it's not just for [00:25:16] teachers, it's for all school staff. [00:25:23] administration, maintenance, it and stuff like that, most of those [00:25:27] people are what we call [00:25:28] seekers, so if there's [00:25:31] actually a threat on campus, they would seek the threat to stop [00:25:35] it, [00:25:39] and then we have what we call classroom defenders like what Terry would have [00:25:42] been, uh, we don't ever tell a teacher to leave their classroom, they need to say with [00:25:46] their kids, so if the shooter happened to come in that room then they can defend. that [00:25:50] classroom, so there's really two types of guardians that we look [00:25:53] out. all [00:25:56] right, here's your weapon, here's [00:25:58] your sword, [00:26:01] okay, [00:26:02] here we go. [00:26:16] to say that uh, the thought of this [00:26:20] happening in my daughter's school, yeah, it [00:26:24] scares [00:26:26] me, it is, it's frightening, yeah, um, most of our [00:26:31] through people pretty [00:26:31] that that, emotional. go because [00:26:32] it's it's on their home campus, it's their turf. do you [00:26:36] feel like this can be traumatizing to teachers? just going through the training? [00:26:40] uh, i think the scenario training can be to point. i don't think it's to the [00:26:43] point where it's going to cause them problems, but i think it's going to help [00:26:47] them face the reality of if this happens, this is what it's going to be like, and [00:26:51] it's just it's not everybody can do [00:26:53] this. [00:26:58] how did it feel for you as teacher carrying again? i would [00:27:01] say it...
