He was upstaged by Germany's far right [00:02:35] of AFD party searching ahead to gain 37% [00:02:39] of the regional vote. This is the AFD's second state win [00:02:43] this month. The news continues here on TRT [00:02:47] World after the [00:02:47] newsmakers. [00:02:58] of [00:03:05] As Israeli [00:03:06] in elections approach, will extremist [00:03:08] of agendas [00:03:10] a prevail. far right national security minister Itamar bengavir is campaigning on [00:03:14] the removal of almost 2 million gozons. But is his [00:03:17] proposal of mass illegal displacement, what isrei's [00:03:21] want? I'm Andreas [00:03:23] of Hanky and today's newsmaker is [00:03:25] Israel. [00:03:31] of [00:03:35] of [00:03:42] For as much as the genocide in Gaza has become devisive issue [00:03:45] internationally, within Israel, most are [00:03:48] of on the same page. [00:03:50] of Across much [00:03:50] of the political spectrum, they generally agree that Israel's military [00:03:54] campaign and its mass killing of civilians is justified [00:03:58] in self-defense, but elections just a month away, more [00:04:02] extremist [00:04:02] of agendas a are emerging, [00:04:04] of including the disengagement 7-10 plan. It [00:04:08] sets out to get 1.86 million gazans to [00:04:12] leave their homes over the next seven years, effectively eliminating [00:04:16] Gaza's indigenous Palestinian population. So is [00:04:20] this the kind of [00:04:21] of platform that will win votes, or will Israely start to identify their [00:04:25] own [00:04:26] of extremists as an existential threat? Here's a look. [00:04:30] Israel's election is [00:04:31] me on the horizon and Gaza is firmly in the firing line, [00:04:35] becoming a central political wedge for far right figures [00:04:39] within Netanyahu's coalition government. With the [00:04:43] election set for October 27, prominent [00:04:46] hardliners are outdoing each other with [00:04:49] of extreme statements against Palestinians [00:04:51] of in bid to woo potential voters. But Israel's [00:04:55] national security minister, Itamar Benqvira has [00:04:58] arguably gone further. than anyone else, ben gavir's [00:05:02] disengagement 7-10 plan has made the emptying [00:05:06] of Gaza of [00:05:07] of Palestinians a critical campaign [00:05:11] of pitch. We are: talking about our goals, 25000 [00:05:15] gassans leaving in the first year is possible, it is possible. [00:05:19] 1.1 million within 3 years and within seven years we can [00:05:23] reach almost 1.9 million who will immigrate. [00:05:26] it is possible, it is realistic, it is in our hands, it [00:05:30] is within our ability. he claims it would involve legal [00:05:34] migration roots, financial assistance and agreements with [00:05:37] countries willing to receive Palestinians. ben Gavier [00:05:41] frames it as not forced expulsion, but as a [00:05:44] choice, but critics argue that calling such departures [00:05:48] voluntary does not take into account whether people living amid the [00:05:52] destruction of war can really be said to have a free [00:05:55] choice. his words give many garzans pause for concern, [00:05:59] who remain defiant at the prospect of being [00:06:02] moved. [00:06:05] we will die on the land of gaza. we will not leave it, we will not leave it, [00:06:09] godwilling, because we are stead fast, we were born. it, we lived in [00:06:13] it, and our grandfathers and fathers, we were born in it, our [00:06:17] children grew up in it, so [00:06:18] it is very difficult to think of leaving, however, others regard [00:06:22] it as little more than an election publicity stunt, which will never come to [00:06:26] pass. i believe that this proposal, which is [00:06:29] displacement, is nothing more than an electoral card to win over [00:06:33] the Israeli water at the ballot box, but i think that [00:06:36] Israel hasn't had enough, three years of war, killing and [00:06:40] destruction and is... of expelling the native people from [00:06:44] their lands in order to seize the land, however, I believe [00:06:48] this proposal will not be carried out and will not [00:06:51] happen, but the wider political picture is more complex [00:06:55] and unclear. Recent polling suggests that there may be no [00:06:59] clear path forward for a ruling governing coalition [00:07:03] as centrist, right and right-wing forces compete for [00:07:06] influence. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his liquid [00:07:10] party have been in power. for years, but in recent [00:07:14] years it's bowd to right-wing populism to bolster itself in [00:07:18] coalitions with other parties. liquid's popularity [00:07:21] plummeted soon after the October 7 attacks by [00:07:25] Hamas. Bezalel Smotrich, another high-profile [00:07:28] right-winger, Israel's finance minister and head the [00:07:32] religious Zionism party, advocates for total [00:07:35] annexation the occupied West bank, which they regard [00:07:39] as belonging to Israel since antiquity. he has [00:07:43] also spear-headed Israel's expansion of illegal [00:07:47] settlements into the occupied west bank with the aim of [00:07:51] shattering any realistic prospect of two-state solution, [00:07:55] and collectively, right-wing parties in Israel are [00:07:58] attempting to block Arab parties from running at all. [00:08:02] Reuters has reported that anti-Netanyahu parties [00:08:06] may inagregate outp pro Netanyahu [00:08:09] parties, but no individual party. currently [00:08:13] stands to win majority its own. The upcoming election [00:08:17] isn't just vote on Bencavier's proposal empty Gaza [00:08:20] within a decade. It's referendum on what kind of future [00:08:24] Israel will stand for and whether the last three years [00:08:28] of upheaval, security operations and its war on [00:08:32] Gaza are something Israeli see as part [00:08:36] their ongoing [00:08:37] future. [00:08:42] Joining me now to make sense the Israeli campaign underway and whether [00:08:46] extremist platforms are appealing to voters are from Tel Aviv, [00:08:49] political analyst and contributor to HTS Akiva [00:08:52] Eldar, from Boston, public policy fellow at the American [00:08:56] University of Beirot, Rami Khuuri, and from London, [00:09:00] historian and professorial research associate at sowas, [00:09:03] khiim Brishi. Thanks all so much for being with me, akiva, I'll [00:09:07] start with you, you know, my understanding so far, and obviously I'm not in [00:09:11] Israel, is that disagreements among [00:09:14] candidates are mostly over potential coalition building [00:09:18] and [00:09:18] you know power distribution, not ending the genocide [00:09:22] or changing the approach to the war on Gaza or stopping [00:09:26] settler violence, is that what you're saying as well? well, [00:09:30] Andrea, I'm afraid that this is not top [00:09:33] the agenda of the [00:09:37] current campaign, election campaign, it [00:09:40] is, between the [00:09:44] israelis, the minority on the liberal [00:09:46] side, even not [00:09:50] the center right headed by [00:09:54] Eisencott and [00:09:56] Bennett, the the thing is [00:09:59] that if you look at the headlines the newspapers [00:10:02] today, Israel is victim of [00:10:06] smear campaign was the [00:10:10] documentary that got ' the broke [00:10:14] the record of standing ovation for 25 minutes [00:10:17] NASA, which [00:10:20] exposes the [00:10:23] military. the Israeli [00:10:26] IDF standards, moral standards [00:10:29] and the mainstream [00:10:32] media, let alone the politicians are [00:10:36] focusing on the [00:10:40] fact that Israel is victim of [00:10:43] antisemitism and this [00:10:47] is on top of everybody's [00:10:51] agenda, so um, what what is [00:10:55] happening in Gaza is is [00:10:58] hardly in the front pages [00:11:01] the mainstream newspapers, the tabloids are not touching [00:11:05] it, and everybody is talking [00:11:08] about how we [00:11:11] can defend and contain [00:11:15] the criticism on the conduct of [00:11:18] Israel, and the question of [00:11:21] b and smutrich whether there are legit. itimate or [00:11:25] not is very marginal, Andrea. Okay, [00:11:29] I, I understand that NASA, the film that [00:11:32] premiered at war that received the standing ovation at Venus. I can [00:11:36] understand that that is the headline today, but in the end the [00:11:40] campaign will will continue, and those, different agendas [00:11:44] will will bring the attention the [00:11:47] Israeli, bring the attention the campaign back to the Israeli people. [00:11:51] So let ask Heim, if you think what Ben Gavier and the other kind of more. [00:11:55] extremists are doing is actually just [00:11:58] campaigning or do people like [00:12:02] it truly see his plans empty out [00:12:05] Palestine as something he can execute and [00:12:09] is that what is Israel can rally [00:12:12] around? i think it's a [00:12:16] mistake to concentrate on ben and smart [00:12:19] rich and they are very extreme [00:12:22] but so is the rest of Israeli s society [00:12:25] and akiva eldar who is [00:12:29] very senior um correspondent of [00:12:33] arats has been looking at them for years and i [00:12:37] agree with him that actually this is not on [00:12:41] the agenda of any the parties, [00:12:44] not even the Arab parties for that matter, so [00:12:48] gaza is not on the agenda because the [00:12:52] Israeli media and the Israeli politician have taken [00:12:56] it the agenda with the willing [00:12:59] support the Israeli population. there [00:13:03] isn't in my judgement a strong [00:13:07] minority or even a weak minority of [00:13:11] Israelis against the genocide. the tel aviv [00:13:14] university polls in [00:13:17] 2024 have shown [00:13:20] that 97% the respondents [00:13:25] of course only Jews were asked to respond [00:13:29] agreed that Israel is doing the right thing in [00:13:33] Gaza and the poll was run [00:13:36] twice in March and in [00:13:39] April or May, I don't remember the second [00:13:42] date, 2024, and the [00:13:46] result was the same, there was 1% difference, so [00:13:50] I think that basically Israelis do not want to [00:13:53] know... what in their name the IDF is [00:13:57] doing in Gaza and when they are [00:14:00] told by Israelis, like the filmmakers [00:14:04] of NASA, what is going on there, in the [00:14:08] words of 24 officers that actually [00:14:12] ran the destruction machinery the [00:14:15] genocide, they want to arrest [00:14:19] them to expel them, and [00:14:22] now hundreds of people have... posted that [00:14:26] they want to kill them, so this [00:14:29] is wrong to concentrate on itamar [00:14:33] bengavir as if he's alone [00:14:36] trying to kill the people of Gaza and empty [00:14:39] Palestine, the Israeli political system, [00:14:43] all of it is behind what is [00:14:47] happening and Israeli public is behind [00:14:51] what is happening, I i think I want this to be very... [00:14:55] clear. Okay, let ask Rami then, do you [00:14:58] agree with Him there? Do you think that [00:15:00] effectively other parties are could be [00:15:04] even making the exact same types of plans as as Disengagement [00:15:08] 7-10, they're just doing it more quietly and masking it [00:15:12] better? Or are those extremists truly [00:15:15] extremists, nobody's taking disengagement 17 [00:15:19] seriously, or are they ignoring that it is [00:15:23] very dangerous undercurrent that? could become reality if [00:15:27] these people come to power again at the end of [00:15:30] October? well, I agree [00:15:34] with my two colleagues broadly in what they're saying, "I [00:15:37] think there's a deeper trend here that we're [00:15:41] seeing, which I certainly see, [00:15:45] and that trend is that what we have seen in [00:15:48] Israel, even before the Gaza [00:15:51] genocide, in the last seven, eight, nine [00:15:54] years, clearly 10 years, you've seen a [00:15:58] consistent drift to the right, [00:16:02] expressed in public opinion, voting, [00:16:05] settlements approval, denying the [00:16:09] Palestinians more and more their rights, squeezing them out a slow [00:16:13] motion ethnic cleansing process, this has been going on for years and [00:16:16] years and Netanyahu's success has been to [00:16:20] galvanize these groups and bring them into the [00:16:24] mainstream the political leadership, and then get the [00:16:27] Americans under the incompetent and [00:16:31] racist American government led by Trump now to support this, but [00:16:35] what this really shows... is that two historic [00:16:39] trends are now kind of peeking, one historic trend [00:16:43] is the nature the zionist process, zionism wants to [00:16:47] state for the Jews, they started talking about that in [00:16:50] 1840 and then Herzel and then balfore and [00:16:54] then 48, so they succeeded, they achieved a [00:16:58] state for the Jewish people, and that state has now become [00:17:01] extremely right-wing and and and [00:17:04] genocidal, and with the silent. or [00:17:08] acquiescence the majority of of [00:17:11] Israelies. the second trend parallel and part of it really, they're not two [00:17:15] trends. the parallel trend is the [00:17:19] acquiescence and active participation the United States, Great [00:17:22] Britain and other western powers in the genocidal campaign, [00:17:26] annexation of land, expansion of settlements, [00:17:30] they make some little gestures now and then we won't [00:17:33] take imports from a from settlement. [00:17:37] but that's really nothing compared to the support like just getting [00:17:41] 40,000 tons of bombs sent as a gift [00:17:45] from the United States of Israel, so the trends of colonial [00:17:48] violence against Palestinians and zionist [00:17:52] violence against Palestinians are now one trend and they've merged [00:17:56] together and that's why they're not, they're not on the campaign, but I [00:18:00] mentioned just one last thing, there's a third trend which strikes me as [00:18:03] really surprising and puzzling why it's not discussed in the [00:18:06] elections. [00:18:14] Turkish president has arrived in New York City to [00:18:18] attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. These are live [00:18:22] pictures. During his visit he is expected to address the general [00:18:26] assembly on Tuesday and hold bilateral [00:18:29] meetings with several world [00:18:31] leaders. Let's bring in our correspondent Andrew Hopkins who [00:18:35] joins us from the Turkish. house in New [00:18:38] York. Andrew, what are we expecting [00:18:42] from president [00:18:42] Erdogan? [00:18:49] well, president Erdogan, he touched down at JFK airport in New York just [00:18:53] over an hour ago, and as you can see at the moment he's arrived at Turkish [00:18:57] House here in the center of New York, this is the building [00:19:00] where Turkish diplomats are based while they're representing the [00:19:04] country at the United Nations, which is just... across the road [00:19:08] actually from where we are, so everything is very close at [00:19:11] hand, and as you mentioned, the Turkish President is expected to address [00:19:15] the United Nations General Assembly high-level [00:19:19] week on Tuesday, this is a week when all the leaders of [00:19:23] all the 193 countries which are members the United [00:19:26] Nations, come here, they make speeches, [00:19:29] they talk about the issues that are important to them, what are the problems [00:19:32] and how they should all be dealt with, now another part of this [00:19:36] week is that These leaders who attend get to have head to head [00:19:40] bilateral meetings with some the other leaders as well, and President [00:19:44] Erdouan is no exception to that. We're not sure of [00:19:47] his exact excuse me, movements at the moment, [00:19:51] except for one which looks pretty likely because the US [00:19:55] ambassador to Turkey Tombarac has said he expects a meeting on the [00:19:59] sidelines between president Erdwan and President Trump and that's going [00:20:03] to, I think arouse quite a bit bit of interest not just in [00:20:07] Turkey. but also [00:20:08] in the international community, because these two countries have the two [00:20:12] biggest militaries in NATO, and yet the United States has [00:20:16] imposed sanctions on the Turkish defense [00:20:19] industry, and there is a will, a sort of [00:20:22] motivation between the two countries, now I spoke to, I've spoken to [00:20:26] officials from both countries, and they want to get rid these sanctions as soon [00:20:30] as possible, so that they can resume this cooperation [00:20:34] in the months and the years ahead, and that's something I think a lot of people... will be [00:20:38] looking at when that meeting takes place to see whether there's [00:20:41] any movement on that issue, aside from that, [00:20:45] there's also likely to be a meeting involving the president [00:20:48] the... business council, which is regular annual [00:20:52] event when he comes here, and there's also a high-level meeting [00:20:56] organized by the UN secretary general Antonio [00:20:59] Gutierez, um, which is about the issue of climate [00:21:03] change, [00:21:03] and of course the Turkish government, Turkia is going to be [00:21:07] hosting the UN's climate change summit Cop 31 in [00:21:11] Antalia later this [00:21:12] year. Okay, yeah, we're looking at those live [00:21:16] pictures, uh, President Erdogan talking to... [00:21:21] passes by some dignitaries, [00:21:25] it seems is flanked by aids and [00:21:28] ministers, as you say, we don't have the exact [00:21:31] schedule, but we do have some [00:21:34] broad idea and the broad strokes of what to [00:21:38] expect, i just want to take one the things that you said, Andrew, and i want to sort of drill [00:21:42] a bit deeper, if that meeting does [00:21:45] happen, as tom baracad suggested, [00:21:49] between president and President Donald Trump, [00:21:53] one would assume as well that the [00:21:56] war with Iran would be high on the agenda as well and [00:22:00] any potential Turkish role in bringing that to an [00:22:03] end? [00:22:09] Yeah, absolutely, because we know that Turkey along with number of other [00:22:13] countries, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt, have been [00:22:17] involved for several months now since quite early. in the [00:22:21] conflict, talking to Iran, talking to the United States [00:22:25] to try and bring it all to an end, pry try and find a resolution [00:22:28] which is appropriate or acceptable [00:22:32] for both these countries, I think those discussions are still going [00:22:36] on behind the scenes, Hakam Fedan, the Turkish fore minister, he actually gave [00:22:40] an interview to local TV channel just a couple of days ago before he [00:22:43] came here to New York and he said there are some new proposals on the [00:22:47] table between the United States and but he didn't go into details, [00:22:51] but I'm sure that work is continuing behind the [00:22:54] scenes. I think what's also worth looking out for over the next few days [00:22:58] and in particular when the Turkish president makes his speech at the [00:23:02] United Nations is, I suspect he may this time, [00:23:06] for the first time since the uh the start the Gaza conflict, [00:23:10] Israel's attacks more than uh two years ago, nearly three [00:23:14] years ago now, is that he will talk about what is happening in the [00:23:18] Red Sea, in particular... uh with the hoothies, with Saudi [00:23:21] Arabia's concerns about regional instability [00:23:25] being caused by these new attacks by the hoothies on Saudi Arabia, [00:23:29] because remember in the in the past few weeks we've had [00:23:33] new military pact signed between Turkey, [00:23:37] Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in which they have agreed to support [00:23:41] each other in these kinds of times and Hakan Fedan during that same [00:23:45] interview he said that they are willing to give Saudi [00:23:49] Arabia some report on some technical issues and [00:23:53] the Turkish government has been a little bit more vocal [00:23:56] addressing the activities the hoothis in [00:23:59] recent days, it certainly hadn't really spoken openly about them [00:24:03] very much earlier on in the Gaza conflict, particularly when it [00:24:06] was uh carrying out attacks on other ships, ships [00:24:10] which the hoothies said were Israeli or linked to [00:24:14] Israeli interests, but I think we might hear a bit [00:24:18] more strid and uh comments from the Turkish [00:24:22] President during that speech uh on Tuesday when he makes it because the [00:24:26] change in the geopolitical circumstances and that [00:24:29] agreement that has been made with Saudi Arabia yeah and that's a good [00:24:33] point because as you say this was [00:24:35] probably the firmest comment that [00:24:39] we had heard yet from Hakan Fidan showing solidarity [00:24:43] with Saudi Arabia and condemning those Hothy [00:24:47] attacks as as diplomatic. correspondent, would you say that [00:24:51] that was the first sort of clear sign the agreement [00:24:54] manifesting in policy, as it plays [00:24:57] out? [00:25:03] yeah, it seems that way. um, i can feed on the ticket from [00:25:07] minister, and also, i think Pakistan have been saying [00:25:11] this alliance is pretty similar to [00:25:15] article 5ive the NATO alliance charter, which [00:25:19] effectively say: is that if one member is attacked then all the other [00:25:22] countries should aid it in some way. now the interesting thing [00:25:26] about the NATO charter is that although it says [00:25:30] other countries have to come to the members, the member in [00:25:34] question's aid, um, it doesn't actually say [00:25:38] how, so they don't actually necessarily have to get involved [00:25:41] militarily, there could be some intelligence support, there should could [00:25:45] be some logistic support, and we don't know [00:25:49] exactly. that applies for the Mecca defense [00:25:53] pact, as it has become known, um, the exact [00:25:56] text the agreement hasn't yet been released to the public, and it's [00:26:00] still, I believe, needs to be approved by the [00:26:04] Turkish Parliament and maybe at that point we may get better [00:26:08] idea of what's in it uh, but certainly if the the terms are [00:26:11] similar to the NATO charter, then [00:26:15] there is some kind of obligation for the countries to support each [00:26:19] other, the countries involved, so Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, but if [00:26:23] it is the same, there's no obligation to start directly [00:26:27] fighting with the other side, there may be other ways of of [00:26:31] helping them, and I think... That's probably what's happening in this case, [00:26:35] because they will probably just review each situation its [00:26:38] merits and will react or provide help in the most [00:26:42] appropriate way they think is possible, and clearly so far they're [00:26:46] not really being that forth coming about what [00:26:49] exactly that help is going to be. Right, yeah, we [00:26:53] see Han fidan next to President [00:26:57] Erdogan right now, for those of us, for those who have just joined us [00:27:00] and who missed. "the beginning the conversation we had with with [00:27:04] Andrew, president Erdogan has arrived in New York, he's going into Turkish [00:27:08] House, which I would assume, Andrew, from the shot that we [00:27:12] see of you is just behind you, your outside uh Turkish house, and for [00:27:16] those who missed the little housekeeping that you did for us, what are we [00:27:19] expecting today, and then when do we expect President Erdoan to [00:27:23] speak and address the general [00:27:25] assembly?" [00:27:32] "well, there's not much we're expecting today after his arrival, he's just had [00:27:36] a 10-hour flight uh from Turkey, so I [00:27:40] think he's probably going to have rest once he's uh met some the [00:27:44] supporters who [00:27:44] have been waiting for him outside the Turkish house here in New York near [00:27:48] the United Nations building. Tomorrow uh, [00:27:52] we believe there's likely to be few these head-to-head meetings [00:27:56] with uh the Turkish President and other leaders who are here to [00:27:59] attend the UN General Assembly again." that [00:28:03] list, those meetings tomorrow haven't been officially released, [00:28:06] then I think when we get onto Tuesday, when the high level week [00:28:10] at the United Nations really gets underway earnest, we've got the Turkish [00:28:14] President speech then, and I think we're going to see quite a [00:28:18] increase in the number of people is going to be meeting on the sidelines and as I [00:28:22] mentioned uh, it seems likely that the meeting with Donald [00:28:25] Trump will take place as well, it seems Tuesday is the most [00:28:29] appropriate at the moment, although again not officially... announced, [00:28:33] but they're both due to make their speeches on the same day, so it make the [00:28:37] most sense, because they're both round and about in the same building [00:28:41] on that day. um, wednesday, more [00:28:45] uh, head to head meetings we're going to have in wednesday and thursday [00:28:49] this uh the meetings with the uh us turkish [00:28:52] trade council, also the high level uh [00:28:56] climate change meeting which has been organized by the UN secretary general [00:29:00] Antonio Gutierres, level representation expected [00:29:04] there by Turkey, because of course it is playing host to [00:29:08] the UN climate change conference, cop 31 in Antalia later [00:29:11] this year. All right, Andrew, super, thanks so much [00:29:14] for that update, you will no doubt bring us up to speed [00:29:18] if [00:29:18] there are any further developments from New York, but for now we [00:29:22] appreciate everything that you've [00:29:24] shared. [00:29:29] Now, Iran's military says it has received. information that the [00:29:33] United States is preparing another attack, warning that any [00:29:37] new strikes would trigger sustained retaliation against American [00:29:40] bases and interests across the region. At the same [00:29:44] time, Tehran says it has sent Washington new set of conditions for [00:29:48] restarting negotiations, including the release of frozen Iranian assets [00:29:52] and an end to the US naval blockade. Iran also [00:29:56] says the straight of Hormus will remain closed until its conditions are [00:29:59] met. As President Donald Trump prepares to meet. [00:31:03] high for these negotiations given the history
