President [00:01:15] of Donald Trump says [00:01:16] in it's time for Ukraine to get new president, following criticism from his [00:01:20] Ukrainian counterpart a US diesel deal with Russia. [00:01:23] in Lodin Zelensky has won the deal will [00:01:25] a only enable Russia's war. The agreement is expected to lead to the release of [00:01:29] more. 300 thous tons of Russian fuel to the US and [00:01:33] global markets. Well, I think you should [00:01:37] have an election, and uh, he could have settled this thing many [00:01:41] of times. Well, I think that Russia would like to make [00:01:45] of deal, and we've had [00:01:46] of it back and forth, but Russia would like to make [00:01:49] of deal, but uh, as I said, this is [00:01:52] of something that could have been solved many times, but for [00:01:56] whatever reason, Zelinski does not want to make deal. [00:02:00] Fresh Israeli strikes have hit the Gaza strip on Saturday evening, Gaza City [00:02:04] and Dalal Balala among the areas targeted. Earlier on Saturday, at [00:02:08] least five Palestinians were killed and eight wounded when an Israeli [00:02:12] strike [00:02:14] in in a gathering of of civilians in Gaza City. And in India [00:02:17] demonstrators and police have clashed during youth protests in the country's [00:02:21] capital, protesters demanding the resignation [00:02:24] of the country's election chief who they accuse of [00:02:28] side-stepping rules and [00:02:30] regulations, well the news [00:02:33] continues on TRT [00:02:36] World. [00:02:52] of [00:03:50] of the [00:03:58] of of [00:04:05] of of [00:04:10] it of live [00:04:10] till to tell our [00:04:14] story, [00:04:31] of [00:04:32] in Five weeks of war, [00:04:36] civilians in the [00:04:37] of crossfire, global energy markets under [00:04:41] pressure, [00:04:43] a region pushed to its limit, a world [00:04:47] bracing for a [00:04:47] of wider of conflict, then a [00:04:51] sudden shift and the first seeds of [00:04:54] dialogue, Washington and Tehran step [00:04:58] back from the brink. Agreeing to a limited halt in [00:05:03] of hostilities, a [00:05:04] of fragile window to deescalate, yet the underlying [00:05:08] fault lines [00:05:09] remain. Is [00:05:12] this a turning point or simply pause before the next [00:05:15] escalation? [00:05:21] US Iran standoff: continuous coverage on [00:05:25] TRT [00:05:26] World. [00:05:57] The Pandora papers have exposed the offshore accounts of one the biggest artieves [00:06:01] in the world. Prominent UK businessman Douglas Latchford smuggled [00:06:05] thousands of artifacts out of Cambodia, Thailand and India which are [00:06:09] now housed in museums and in private collections in the. This is [00:06:13] something done by people were supposedly respectable, whose names are [00:06:17] visible on public labels in museums. We didn't [00:06:20] understand the amount of activity that he was up [00:06:23] to in terms of buying and selling student [00:06:26] antiquities, [00:06:27] but some museums are refusing to admit that they have looted artifacts on [00:06:31] display. We have so much evidence, not [00:06:35] just documents, but we still have living people around who [00:06:39] can say, hey, we saw this statue. [00:06:42] stolen, but they won't be around forever, we have to [00:06:46] collect that evidence now, we can't wait another 10 [00:06:50] years, these cultural properties need to come [00:06:53] home, [00:07:02] a couple decades ago, there were lot thefts from this [00:07:06] location, there were attempts of arm [00:07:10] robbery so... became habit to keep it [00:07:14] secret, [00:07:20] it's a national treesor, so it's important to keep everything [00:07:24] set. many the pieces are pieces that [00:07:28] were looted from temples and then brought here, these [00:07:31] are recovered pieces, maybe trucks were stopped at customs or [00:07:35] at the border, it has more than 10,000 [00:07:39] pieces, so this gives you a sense of some... things that were on [00:07:43] their way out of Cambodia. My name [00:07:47] is Bradley Gordon. I'm an American lawyer living in Ponom [00:07:51] Pen. I have 15 years experience running my own international practice [00:07:55] here. I worked with refugees and then I was hired by the [00:07:58] Cambodian Ministry of Culture and fine arts in 2018 to get back stolen [00:08:02] antiquities. I think it's [00:08:06] correcting a historical [00:08:07] wrong. Looting goes way [00:08:11] back. We have. have the French coming to Cambodia who went to [00:08:15] Temples and took out statues. Those statues are now at the [00:08:19] Gibe in Paris. And the scale the [00:08:22] removal really picked up over the decades. American Gis [00:08:26] in Vietnam. 1960s, we start to hear [00:08:30] that heads were going out. Heads were easier to take out than the [00:08:34] whole sculpture. So, [00:08:37] 72-79, we don't hear of too many statues [00:08:40] disappearing. "there was a tragic [00:08:44] chapter of Cambodian history where so many people lost their [00:08:48] lives under the kamer ruch, but starting in the [00:08:52] 80s we see it pick up again [00:08:56] and by the 90s it had become massive, the looting that [00:09:00] was going on. they were using metal [00:09:03] detectors and it was incredible destruction, [00:09:07] just taking everything they knew they could get a good price [00:09:10] for. [00:09:15] so we're tracking more than 2,0 statues at [00:09:18] 105 museums around the world, maybe about a thousand [00:09:22] in private collections. the team is working on gathering [00:09:26] evidence, sometimes we are coming to location like [00:09:29] this to see if anything that's been described to us matches what's [00:09:33] here, here you can see their eyebrows, [00:09:37] yeah eyebrow and the nose, that will help us in terms of [00:09:41] building case. when we are looking outside of Cambodia and we see something [00:09:45] a private collection or museum, we can say it's definitely [00:09:48] cambodian, [00:09:51] yes, [00:09:55] so if we look at it and then look at [00:09:58] that, okay, it's almost like [00:10:01] perfect in terms of being [00:10:03] identical, so soop's [00:10:06] a exceptional archaeologist, i can show her a [00:10:10] photo and she'll say, oh, i've seen some... like that in such and such province, [00:10:14] that's an incredible knowledge to have. she [00:10:18] feels very strongly about what we're [00:10:20] doing. [00:10:26] 'it's broken the head, the food, the legs [00:10:29] and where are the body of this [00:10:33] feet, that is so painful to see something [00:10:37] like this, it's sad, really [00:10:39] sad, [00:10:43] looters a lot of times they hack the statue off and they left the [00:10:47] feet behind, we just feel like something [00:10:50] missing, the soul are not there, [00:10:52] so [00:11:25] person in particular was very involved with removing [00:11:28] antiquities from Cambodia, Douglas [00:11:31] Latchford, he's one the greatest art thiefs in [00:11:35] history many the [00:11:36] and statues that went through his hands, went to museums and private [00:11:40] collectors, so they're in people's living rooms, in [00:11:44] the child's bedroom, up on the [00:11:46] wall, now our mission is to get them out of those [00:11:50] living rooms and bedrooms and get them back [00:11:52] here. [00:12:02] You can find Thaian Cambodian antiquities [00:12:05] easily, just looking at real estate [00:12:08] porn, so glossy photos the [00:12:12] interior of people's homes and a photo the living [00:12:15] room, and you will see in the corner there'll be camer [00:12:19] antiquity. I'm Angela Chou, [00:12:23] I have a Ph.D. ti Buddhist art and [00:12:26] literature and I'm an independent researcher working [00:12:30] now to help find looted objects that left Thailand [00:12:34] and Cambodia. All the work that I do was [00:12:38] volunteer work. I was actually investment banker for many [00:12:41] years, so this freeze me to spend the time on things I'm interested in [00:12:45] doing. Cultural institution is a [00:12:49] historic phenomenon, so since the 19th century, many [00:12:52] objects in places that work. col [00:12:55] to places like Britain, France and the United [00:12:59] States. Imagine the statue of David [00:13:03] by Michelangelo in Florence, imagine [00:13:06] somehow the Thai army came and took [00:13:10] that statue and chopped it up and they dragged it back to Thailand, and [00:13:14] now Italians who wanted to see their art had to travel to Thailand. This [00:13:18] is the kind of situation we're facing. [00:13:21] Since the time that the colonies became independent. "these [00:13:25] countries have said these things left our country in [00:13:29] illegal or unethical fashion, and now it's time for them to return [00:13:33] to be once again part the [00:13:36] culture and history of our country. [00:13:40] so you can find a lot of objects in online museum [00:13:44] catalogs, or catalogs of auction houses and [00:13:47] dealers. so during the pandemic, I came across [00:13:51] a brown statue in New York's metropolitan museum of..." [00:13:55] Here's the statue in the Mets online catalogue and they have a [00:13:59] photo of it. This is Golden Boy. It's a [00:14:03] very informal nickname for a statue of a [00:14:07] standing male figure with a youthful [00:14:09] appearance. It is absolutely [00:14:13] convincing in that sculpted to have a mass and a [00:14:16] presence. And that presence is enhanced by [00:14:20] the golden color of this gilded bronze. It's a famous statue [00:14:24] that [00:14:25] "i i would say is probably the the best or one the top southeast asian [00:14:29] items that is in the collection the metropolitan museum bar in New [00:14:32] York. the bron statue is about 900 or thousand years [00:14:36] old and then they say cambodia, ancor [00:14:39] Siemra province. the chance is [00:14:43] extremely high for Cambodia and Thailand that that piece [00:14:47] was illegally removed from the country. you [00:14:50] basically um would have to [00:14:53] assume..." that that object was [00:14:56] stolen, this is just a statistical thing, so [00:15:00] I tried to trace back, what do we know about that object, what [00:15:04] specific spot that it came from, or who owned it in the past? [00:15:08] the met hopefully provides um a little bit of of [00:15:11] providence information, so this is information about who owned the statue [00:15:15] before it came to the met. [00:15:19] in 1988, dealer in London spink and [00:15:22] son sold this statue to [00:15:37] know that Spink and Sun collaborated with Douglas Latchford [00:15:41] in sending antiquities illegally into the United [00:15:44] States. Douglas Latchford was a [00:15:48] British man who was indicted for looting and smuggling by the United States in [00:15:52] 2019. He lived in [00:15:56] Bangkok and was able to purchase items directly from [00:16:00] looters in Cambodia and Thailand and then basically [00:16:03] present respectable professional face to to [00:16:07] the museums who really did not ask enough questions about [00:16:11] how Latchford managed to get these objects. [00:16:15] He had in fact so many objects flowing through him [00:16:19] to London and New York that people started to say, [00:16:23] you are these all [00:16:24] authentic. [00:16:28] So Glatchford engaged an art historian called Emma Bunker [00:16:32] to help him to write three coffee table volumes about Kmer [00:16:36] art. Camera art covers art in Cambodia and [00:16:39] Thailand. We have excellent photographs that are [00:16:43] reproduced in color. They are catalog enties with footnotes. He [00:16:47] made efforts to use these books to declare that these things are [00:16:50] authentic. I noticed that a [00:16:54] 2008 book by Bunker and Latchford, they do mention [00:16:58] briefly this statue which is at the Met, a [00:17:01] and footnote at the back, they say this statue is [00:17:05] actually from Northeast Thailand. [00:17:12] the the thing about it is that the Metropolitan museum [00:17:16] of art says that this statue comes from [00:17:18] Cambodia from SEMR province. Then in [00:17:22] 2011, Emma Bunker and Douglas Lotchford published this [00:17:26] book, mayor gold, and they do mention [00:17:30] that 11th century statue [00:17:31] at the Met, which they had published earlier. It says here, [00:17:35] quote, the figure was... actually found at the village of [00:17:39] bangyang, lahan district where its stone base is still [00:17:43] visible and not in cambodia. what [00:17:47] this footnote is telling us is identifying a specific place, [00:17:51] a certain village a certain district, and it says its stone base is still [00:17:55] visible, mean that's quite [00:17:56] extraordinary, so it [00:18:00] would be miraculous really if you could go there and [00:18:03] actually find the base and try to see if maybe [00:18:07] did come from [00:18:08] Thailand. [00:18:18] Kanwang is the leader in Thailand's culture heritage repatriation movement on the [00:18:22] ground. [00:18:32] Thanks to Tanongsak, lot more information has come out [00:18:36] uh about [00:18:37] how the... was conducted in Thailand, because Tonansak went to some these [00:18:41] villages and actually spoke to the villagers who were involved in the looting and [00:18:44] explained exactly how these things [00:18:46] happen. [00:18:53] I have to translate things for him, I have to find him some [00:18:57] information. I am a historian, but my focus is [00:19:01] mainly on Burma, but yeah, as husband and wife [00:19:04] we share information, we... we share out [00:19:08] discoveries A [00:19:39] so we communicate to whatsapp, messenger, [00:19:42] emails, the footnote said that the plint or the base the [00:19:46] statue is still there, angela [00:19:50] ระบุ ใน [00:19:51] ไทย ว่า [00:19:55] บ้าน [00:19:55] ยางหัน [00:19:59] ไทย, the problem is in the bunker book, it's not [00:20:03] mentioned which province is in, so it's kind of like leaving out the state in the [00:20:07] US. there could be different villages the same [00:20:09] name. [00:20:20] Our plan is to head out today to find the base the golden boy bronze [00:20:24] statue currently at the met in New York to see if we can prove it [00:20:28] came from Thailand. According to Latschwart's book, it's in a place [00:20:32] called Banyang, but we're not exactly sure where the right [00:20:35] banyang is. [00:20:37] rubber trees or a type of rubber tree. So, [00:20:45] Ban yang is very common name [00:20:50] when in Thai. Ban simply means village. we Yang first means heard of this place, we google [00:20:54] it and we found in [00:20:58] lahan somewhere in, but then when we rechecked we [00:21:01] realized maybe this b is not in [00:21:05] province, virtually [00:21:08] has no cambodian civilization [00:21:12] intact. [00:21:35] This is the problem with lot of camer [00:21:36] art is that the ancorean empire spread across both [00:21:40] Cambodia and large parts of Thailand, so camer art that we see in [00:21:44] museums, it's not always clear whether it actually came from what is the [00:21:48] modern state of Cambodia and the modern s [00:22:20] which is the temple of bangyang village, it's not so far [00:22:23] away from the most iconic camer style temples [00:22:27] and it's not too far from the cambodian [00:22:31] border, that's why we thought it's more likely for this [00:22:35] base the statue to be somewhere in this province, [00:22:39] it's just our gut feeling that says it should be in [00:22:42] Buridam province rather than chayapur [00:22:45] province, so we'll see, we don't know yet what's going to happen, [00:22:49] we don't [00:24:06] It was royal capital only for a couple [00:24:09] decades before the royal capital moved back to [00:24:13] Ancore. [00:24:40] statues [00:24:40] so many that [00:24:40] many we are tracking down come from this temple complex and the [00:24:44] area around it. one the missing statue that we [00:24:48] believe is from this area is: [00:25:20] We are looking for more evidence at the temple to prove it taken [00:25:24] from here, sadly it suffered some the [00:25:27] worst looting, especially because Latchford was so obsessed with [00:25:31] Gake. [00:25:48] We're working with [00:25:49] the team of. [00:26:03] 'I think is maybe for the guardian, so [00:26:06] we know the looters dug up this area and part of that area, it's [00:26:10] like industrial looting, at least 40 or 50 people were [00:26:14] here digging, they were either [00:26:17] soldiers or local villagers, this was in the [00:26:20] 1990s, it was very dangerous time, [00:26:24] they came armed, there were other karamir groups [00:26:28] in this area, all looking for treasures, all [00:26:31] driven by the'. men from outside, Douglas Latchford and his [00:26:35] friends, all to fill up western museums and private [00:26:39] collections. [00:26:43] We now have access to a tremendous amount of information from the Latcher [00:26:47] family. Through years of of secret [00:26:50] negotiations, we were able to get an agreement with [00:26:54] Julia Ladford, the daughter of Douglas Ladchford to give [00:26:58] us all the records relating to Cambodia, [00:27:02] and that has been a treasure trove of information, we are looking through [00:27:06] emails, we have his invoices, we have his [00:27:09] receipts, we have his false provenants, we [00:27:13] know now the path, many the statues that went through his hands [00:27:16] took, they would go out the temple like prosect, and they [00:27:20] would be taken across the border, from Bangkok, Latchford [00:27:24] would typically ship it to London, so London was [00:27:28] center point of activity, and then from London they went to other [00:27:31] countries. [00:27:44] My name is John Paul Labot, I'm a special agent with Homeland [00:27:47] Security Investigations in New [00:27:49] York. Homeland [00:27:53] security investigations covers a full gamet of [00:27:56] investigations from narcotics to child pornography [00:28:00] cases to money launch. ring, we [00:28:04] also investigate the theft of cultural property, trying to [00:28:08] prosecute those involved and return the artifacts [00:28:10] back home. so we [00:28:14] learned from Brad Gordon that the Cambodians were [00:28:17] extremely interested in a particular statue, [00:28:21] and it was scanda a peacock. homeland security have [00:28:25] identified 12 museums in the U.S. [00:28:28] that have artifacts that were sourced by Douglas Lashford. We also have [00:28:32] four private collectors that we know of, we have a pretty extensive collection of [00:28:35] artifacts from Lashford as well. We have a list that we're going [00:28:39] through systematically to recover all those pieces and [00:28:43] to scand a peacock as [00:28:44] well. [00:28:56] Israel has killed an unparalleled and [00:28:59] unprecedented number of civilians. with the [00:29:03] full knowledge of how many civilian lives each [00:29:07] bomb will [00:29:07] take [00:29:17] a new chapter [00:29:19] in afghanistan and even an attempt in coup are just to overthrow an [00:29:23] autoocrat. you've seen the [00:29:24] news. essentially Israel is apartide [00:29:28] state, but the newsmakers dives deeper. we have to stop. [00:32:52] we finally arrived in Buriram province where we're hoping the base [00:32:56] the golden boy statue is [00:32:57] located. we are calling [00:33:01] you just to give you a bit of an update, so [00:33:05] we drove 180 km to [00:33:09] . wow, i'm excited too, [00:33:11] i wish i could be there. [00:37:16] meet blue tiger, he was involved in looting for about four years [00:37:20] in the 1990s and [00:37:22] he um helped to loot [00:37:23] pr so for [00:37:27] "each the informants that we're working with, they all have code names [00:37:31] to protect them and keep them safe, and we asked them, do they have [00:37:35] favorite animal? um, in this case he picked tiger. [00:37:39] the reason we're using code names is because looting is still going [00:37:42] on. we don't want other looters to retaliate against [00:37:45] them, so it's it's always [00:37:49] very sensitive situation when we meet with [00:37:51] louter. we're going to ask him some more [00:37:55] questions about specific statues at pressecoj." which will help [00:37:59] us in our [00:37:59] discussions, [00:38:05] it's taking him a while to get here, so maybe he's not coming, so let's [00:38:09] see, he's [00:38:13] coming, [00:38:19] yesby, [00:38:57] អាគារ ដែល ចូល ទៅ យក ពូ នៅ ក្នុង ហ្នឹង [00:39:01] អញ្ចឹង ចង់ ដឹង ទីតាំង ដែល ពូ យក បាន នឹង ពូ [00:39:05] ចាំ ថា រូប ទាំង អស់ គេ យក ចេញ ពី កង កងុក នូយ [00:39:09] មុខ មុខ ខាង ក្រៅ ឬ [00:39:12] ខាង ក្នុង [00:39:14] អាជីស នេះ ខ្នេស មួយ ខ្នេះ មួយ [00:39:18] blue tiger testimony is further [00:39:20] product [00:39:25] ចង់ ស្រក់ ទឹក ភ្នែក ' [00:40:27] យើង អត់ មាន អាហា យើង អត់ ឃ្លាន យើង ត្រូវការ លុយ [00:40:31] យើង ត្រូវការ រស់ ដូច្នេះ ហើយ នៅ ក្នុង ពេល នឹង ហើយ ដែល មនុស្ស គិត [00:40:34] ថា បើសិន តែ លួច វត្ថុ បុរាណ យក ចេញ ទៅ លក់ ទៅ គឺ [00:40:38] បាន លុយ ខ្លះ សម្រាប់ សម្រាប់ ចិញ្ចឹម ជីវិត [00:40:40] អញ្ចឹង ចាស អញ្ចឹង ហើយ ដែល ជា [00:40:44] ហេតុផល ធ្វើ ឲ្យ នៅ ក្នុង សម័យ សង្គ្រាម នឹង គឺ ការ បាត់បង់ វត្ថុ បុរាណ មាន [00:40:48] ច្រើន [00:40:57] good thing to do for the country, they want to do something [00:41:01] to redeem for their deeds in the [00:41:04] past, trying to get good karma, and for [00:41:08] me it's been extraordinary to be able to take words, [00:41:12] just take description from a former [00:41:15] luter. [00:41:20] and within a month or two months be able to say, oh, this is the [00:41:24] statue that was in that temple that is now sitting in New York. We [00:50:40] determined it was sold to a private collector in New York, we approached the [00:50:44] collector, showed some evidence that the piece had been [00:50:47] imported improperly. After presenting the evidence, the [00:50:51] collector decided to walk. away from the [00:50:53] statue, we came all the way [00:50:57] from Cambodia for the repatriation [00:50:58] ceremony, [00:51:16] feeling very emotional, the scanda on the [00:51:19] peacock to see it here in New York. in these [00:51:23] offices is just startling and to see how beautiful [00:51:26] it is, it is a magnificent [00:51:27] piece. i [00:51:31] feel so happy because it is very important [00:51:35] for us as a Cambodian to have our culture, to have [00:51:39] our soul the [00:51:40] ancestors, because in [00:51:44] everyday life we still practice, we still wasted the [00:51:47] statute. [00:51:53] "This is the return the son of one the [00:51:56] greatest kings in Cambodian history, and we [00:52:00] know so little about his reign [00:52:03] that the statue itself starts to tell us..." story about what happened a [00:52:07] thousand years ago in [00:52:08] Cambodia, [00:52:24] we find that so much was [00:52:26] lost, there's a yearning among the young generation [00:52:30] to understand better and realizing that [00:52:33] Cambodian art and creativity and achievements, [00:52:37] something they should be proud [00:52:39] of: [00:53:01] i would like to see every cambodian [00:53:05] national treasure to come home and for the Cambodians [00:53:09] have control over the destiny of those properties and to [00:53:13] decide whether they want them to be tour, whether they want them to be in [00:53:16] museums, whether they want them to be back at the [00:53:18] temples. [00:53:36] "museums she realize that actually returning something, it doesn't have to be a zero [00:53:40] some game, they're a waste, they can collaborate and form new [00:53:44] endeavors, curating, conservation, [00:53:47] display. [00:55:14] why is it Africana only? I'm telling you [00:55:17] today, they are going to [00:55:19] live, [00:55:25] we got that flag down our throats all [00:55:29] the time, you're not allowed to talk, oh no, that you [00:55:33] oh, that's tabu.
