[00:01:10] now Saudi Arabia is vowing a strong response to the recent [00:01:13] Ansarullahuti attacks on Riyadh's main international airport. [00:01:17] the Saudi authorities have extended the suspension of all [00:01:20] a flights to and from Riyadh as the Hauti step up their attacks on the [00:01:24] airport and across the kingdom. at least 14 people now have [00:01:28] of been killed and more than 300 injured in the deadliest attacks so [00:01:32] far on the [00:01:33] of airport over the [00:01:34] of [00:01:34] of weekend, the event of recent weeks [00:01:38] are [00:01:38] of serious, of our response must be equally [00:01:42] of serious, energy security cannot be [00:01:44] a [00:01:45] in taken for granted. for Saudi Arabia, this [00:01:49] circum this circumstances have tested our [00:01:53] of infrastructure, our institution, our [00:01:56] people and our resilience. [00:02:00] "they have also tested decision made long before the [00:02:04] present [00:02:05] a crisis. in Yemen, the government's [00:02:09] me military says it's targeted several huti positions in That [00:02:13] is, in the That is governor, which has been the scene of [00:02:16] intense fighting between the two sides. The [00:02:19] of hootis have released [00:02:21] of footage showing Saudi backed Yemani forces being attacked in [00:02:24] a Marib, and they're also warning the [00:02:26] of US not to enter the war in Yemen, and they've also issued a warning to..." [00:02:30] deployes of Saudi oil facilities and [00:02:33] airports. [00:02:37] If the [00:02:37] of US becomes involved in the aggression against Yemen, we will not deliberate over the [00:02:41] decision to respond, rather there will be a swift and painful response [00:02:44] targeting the US and all its interests in the region, wherever we can reach [00:02:48] them. We warn [00:02:50] of [00:02:50] of all employees and workers at Saudi oil facilities and airports to stay [00:02:53] away from these sites as they have become legitimate targets for Yemen, [00:02:57] particularly as the situation is heading towards [00:03:01] of of [00:03:07] of [00:03:09] so muhammad, what's the latest you're hearing from [00:03:11] of there? [00:03:20] yes, we we are talk, we could talk about [00:03:24] the what we are hearing from the [00:03:26] of his, the are talking about the these, especially those who are um... sending [00:03:30] or posting for the social network, the they say that the they [00:03:34] of say they want the saudis to test uh the what what's the [00:03:38] yemenis have went through 12 12 years of [00:03:42] of attacks, of bombings and targeting wedding holes, targeting [00:03:45] airports targeting scores targeting, the the they say [00:03:49] this uh this is also a pressure on Saudi Arabia in order [00:03:53] to allomees to return back to [00:03:55] in negotiating table to resolve their [00:03:57] of differences peacefully and also to to to benefit [00:04:01] from their [00:04:02] of worth the the the houties wished attacks to [00:04:05] stop the experts of oil in order as [00:04:12] a a pressure to to have this oil revenues [00:04:12] of to be paid for all the yemenes across the country and even those [00:04:16] under its [00:04:17] of country under its [00:04:22] of in control so far also we we could talk about [00:04:22] of the the [00:04:22] in leads remarks made by the leader [00:04:26] in of abdul who mentioned that the they will not give up the the he describe what [00:04:30] is going on on their military [00:04:32] a attacks as just cause that an order to [00:04:36] pressure Saudi Arabia to listen to their demands and [00:04:39] of fulfill their demands so far while we are having also [00:04:42] of of the saudi [00:04:43] of official mentioning that they are also adam to to [00:04:46] continue on their course as well as [00:04:50] in to uh they are not going to let down what he mentioned [00:04:54] of the the energy energy that he mentioned as that [00:04:58] it's it's [00:04:59] it couldn't be taken for granted as he mentioned that so [00:05:03] far the these [00:05:04] a the the the situation is escalating seriously and also [00:05:08] dangerously especially and we are witnessing the conflict is taking place in [00:05:12] Thaiz. and it's a densely populated area, [00:05:15] almost according to the [00:05:18] IRG's military spokes person, he mentioned [00:05:22] that over 1,800 operations have been carried [00:05:26] out on his positions, command and control [00:05:29] centers and also departs and [00:05:32] supplies, so no day passes by without the international [00:05:36] recognized government mentioning that the are a full scale [00:05:40] operations on the... targets and also [00:05:44] launching bases, so also we are [00:05:48] mentioning also the HOD military spokes person, they are also on the other [00:05:52] side, also they are intensifying their attacks both inside the [00:05:55] country and also outside the country, particularly [00:05:59] on divinside Saudi territories, he mentioned [00:06:03] later the latest of which his press he mentioned [00:06:07] that they have what they have attacked, but he described is [00:06:11] how the enemy... enforcements and also that they have already [00:06:14] recaptured the mountain of Habashi, which is one the most [00:06:18] important and strategic mountains that [00:06:21] overlooks, the the main road or the main gate [00:06:24] towards Babel mandab. All right, [00:06:28] Muhammad [00:06:29] life first there in Sana, thank [00:06:31] you. Now Iran has [00:06:34] offered, as we were saying, to facilitate talks between Saudi [00:06:37] Arabia and the hoothis and it's also called for a political [00:06:41] solution. [00:07:12] influence over yemen suties, Tehran doesn't deny that [00:07:16] Yemen's Hothies are its alli, Iran doesn't deny [00:07:20] that it has provided yemenhooties [00:07:22] with support, economic support, diplomatic support and military [00:07:26] support at certain times, but teran insis that Yemen's [00:07:30] Hothies make their own decisions and the decisions that [00:07:34] Hutis make are not made by Tehran and [00:07:38] they they make independent decisions, so [00:07:41] Iran is off. bring to help, on Sunday evening, Iran's [00:07:45] foreign minister Abbas Araqchi had a phone conversation with his Saudi [00:07:49] counterpart Faisal bin Farhan, so despite highten tensions [00:07:52] between the two countries, between Iran and Saudi Arabia, these two [00:07:56] regional rivals continue to have diplomatic [00:08:00] engagements at high levels, this was the first phone [00:08:03] conversation between the top diplomats [00:08:06] since the Yemen war started, Iran [00:08:10] says that the situation. in the Arabian peninsula [00:08:14] has no military solution. Tehran [00:08:18] maintains that the only way to settle this is through political [00:08:22] means and Iran says that it is ready to facilitate talks [00:08:25] between Saudi Arabia and between Yeman Suthis. Iran [00:08:29] says that war between the two countries between Yemansuthis [00:08:33] and Saudi Arabia only serves Israeli interests. [00:08:37] Tehran also says that road map for peace agreed by [00:08:41] Yemeni waring faction back in 2022, [00:08:45] that un backed road map should be the basis for [00:08:49] negotiations and for diplomacy to settle this [00:08:52] issue. now turkish [00:08:55] president strongly condemned the [00:08:58] attacks king [00:09:01] khalid international airport over the weekend. he was speaking on the mecca [00:09:05] joint defense agreement that was signed with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. [00:09:09] other one said the work to establish a permanent institution. [00:09:13] framework is [00:09:13] continuing, [00:09:18] we condemn in the strongest terms the attacks carried out by [00:09:21] theis on Saturday against King Khalid international airport [00:09:25] in Riyadh. We ask Allah to have mercy on our brothers and [00:09:29] sisters who passed away. stands with Saudi Arabia and [00:09:33] its Saudi brothers in the face these unlawful and inhumane [00:09:37] attacks. We're continuing our efforts to establish the [00:09:40] institutional framework for the... defense agreement we signed with [00:09:44] Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on August 7 and we're [00:09:47] advancing our defense cooperation along two main things: [00:09:51] first, we're working toward the goals of collective defense and [00:09:55] regional cooperation, second, we're taking the necessary [00:09:59] steps to ensure this cooperation is enshrig a [00:10:03] permanent and functional institutional framework, as is the [00:10:07] case with NATO, activities under the joint defense agreement [00:10:11] will be conducted in accord. with our national [00:10:13] legislation. we are continuing our efforts to submit the [00:10:17] agreement to our grand national assembly in the coming days to complete the [00:10:21] domestic process. [00:10:27] now just within the last couple of minutes it is reported from [00:10:29] yemensar lahutis that they have targeted [00:10:33] riyadh's international airport again a new missile [00:10:37] attack so as this conflict it appears [00:10:40] continue continuing escalate we're going to speak now to uh [00:10:44] Nawaf Obaid he is a former Saudi government advisor and a visiting [00:10:48] senior fellow at King's College and he joins us uh from London to [00:10:52] talk more about this thanks very much for being with us. so clearly there [00:10:56] is a danger that this is escalating uh [00:10:59] further even even as we do this news update, what are [00:11:03] your how do you see this playing out? what are your fears about the degree to which [00:11:07] this could escalate? mean the escalation is [00:11:11] clear, this is a way the their only way to get [00:11:15] back at Saudi Arabia and this is by attacking [00:11:18] the civilian targets, what more, what more to make [00:11:22] point for them is to hit um... the airport or hit [00:11:26] any other civilian building to have the [00:11:30] uh, to have the media, the global media attention to it, but [00:11:33] ultimately it doesn't really change [00:11:36] the the sequencing on the ground. this is a war [00:11:40] that has to happen unfortunately, they are, as you can see by [00:11:44] their actions, they are a terrorist organization that allows [00:11:48] themselves to do things that are completely out of international norm. [00:11:52] last week they were, they hit an an [00:11:55] electric generator in Medina, so it's just more [00:11:59] the same, but they've they have very, they have [00:12:03] calculated well that hitting a civilian airport such [00:12:07] as the one in Riad or the one in Damasmam, the King Fad [00:12:10] airport would make for enough international media [00:12:14] attention to generate a form of embarrassment towards the Saudi government, [00:12:18] and that's exactly what they're doing. Why have the [00:12:22] hooties been so hard to defeat? [00:12:26] "the h have been hard to defeat because they don't play by the [00:12:29] same, they don't have the same [00:12:32] responsibility, they don't have the same norms. you [00:12:36] is movement that doesn't have the responsibility of a [00:12:39] government, it just has the responsibility to keep building its missile or or its [00:12:43] drone capacity in this case, and to keep its people in poverty [00:12:47] and to claim that it is doing it for divine reason, [00:12:51] and being from a certain part of Yemen that's ' the [00:12:55] northwestern part that's very mountainous, they unfortunately know how to [00:12:59] dig in and live in caves and tunnels and what have you. now this war [00:13:03] is very different from the previous one, because this war will most [00:13:06] will with a high certainty will include ground forces, which has [00:13:10] never been, which have never been interjected into the yemini theater [00:13:14] before, and this is where the the the balance will [00:13:18] shift because before it was based on yemeni ground [00:13:22] forces with the saudi and alli um [00:13:26] support, which is happening as we speak today, but [00:13:29] going forward, this clearly is not enough, and the yemany [00:13:33] factions need the support of what is [00:13:37] known as a joint forces command formations coming from other [00:13:40] countries, in order to be able to keep pushing upwards and [00:13:44] removing the hoothies from the newly from the newly conquered [00:13:48] territories and the one that they've conquered for the last [00:13:50] decade, so when [00:13:54] the south. uh val to respond to [00:13:58] this strongly, what form do you think that's going to [00:14:01] take? is it going to be as you're suggesting more more ground [00:14:05] forces? so the more forcefully is on the [00:14:08] immediate is what been happening so the did [00:14:11] this, [00:14:14] the the weeks of sequence saudi aeral [00:14:18] strikes which have degraded their fundamental basis their war [00:14:22] machine which are their missile. [00:14:25] depots, their their missile bases, their [00:14:29] drone factories that you find deep in [00:14:33] under mountains in tunnels and so what you have here that you have [00:14:37] realization from the part that these strikes are [00:14:41] actually doing lot of damage, so a way what [00:14:44] the what what they're trying to do is to respond a way where [00:14:48] that will temporal or that will start decreasing the sequence air strikes both [00:14:52] under main military. [00:14:55] hardware base and as well as on helping [00:14:59] the yemen, [00:15:03] has [00:15:08] this has this conflict exposed the limits of [00:15:12] Saudi Arabia's ability to to use its military [00:15:16] and economic power for the political outcome that it [00:15:19] wants, it's [00:15:23] the war itself has properly started, if the [00:15:27] war starts where you have sequence war between land, air and [00:15:31] sea, then the situation on the ground will be very different, like as [00:15:35] I was just saying just earlier on, you you are starting to see [00:15:39] the beginning of it by the reclaiming of vabel mandab and and the [00:15:43] coasts around it, I mean that was key, that was in the first in [00:15:47] the first few days the war they did this this [00:15:51] flash attack which they took it over and [00:15:54] with the new architectural command and control [00:15:58] constrate they were able to take it back, but ultimately as [00:16:02] coming back to your question, all the political power, all the influence, all the [00:16:06] economic, all the monetary... influence of Saudi Arabia won't matter if you don't [00:16:10] win it on the ground and that's what will [00:16:12] happen. good to get your perspective on this [00:16:16] uh now after obaid. thanks very much for being with us. thank you for [00:16:20] having me. now at [00:16:24] least 139 people have died after boat [00:16:27] carrying migrants capsized off the coast of [00:16:31] Djibooty. the boat was believed to be carrying more than 300 people on [00:16:34] route to Yemen with dozens still missing. "the UN's [00:16:38] migration agency described it as one the deadliest disasters on the [00:16:42] eastern migration route. It used hundreds of thousands, it is used by [00:16:46] hundreds of thousands of people each year to reach gulf countries, [00:16:49] mostly from Ethiopia and [00:16:51] Somalia. [00:16:55] Israeli forces have launched a drone attack on refugee camp [00:16:59] in southern Gaza, killing two Palestinians. Paramedics say [00:17:03] several people were wounded in the drone attack which struck near the city of [00:17:06] Rafah. refugee camp there shelters thousands of [00:17:09] Palestinians who have been displaced several times in Israel's [00:17:13] three-year war. more than 74 thousand Palestinians have been killed with [00:17:17] a tol rising almost every [00:17:20] day. [00:17:23] Israel's military continues to expand its so-called yellow [00:17:26] line in eastern Gaza City with more than [00:17:30] 65% the strip now under Israeli army [00:17:33] control. that line divides Gaza into two zones an eastern a [00:17:37] where Israeli forces remain deployed and prevent Palestinians from [00:17:41] returning, and a western area where more than 2 million [00:17:44] Palestinians have been pushed and forced to live under further [00:17:48] restrictions. Abdul Wahaab Hamad reports now from [00:17:52] Gaza on how people are trying to make living near the yellow [00:17:55] line. I am here in one the neighborhoods [00:17:59] in eastern Gaza City. This area is very close [00:18:03] to the Israeli military controlled areas in Gazo. [00:18:07] known as yellow line there in the background that [00:18:11] whole area is under full Israeli military [00:18:14] control, the yellow line determines how [00:18:18] much of gaza palestinians here can actually live [00:18:21] in, the problem is this line was supposed [00:18:25] to stay frozen until full Israeli [00:18:28] withdrawal from Gaza and until [00:18:32] Donald Trump Gaza piece plan moves [00:18:35] on the second. phase [00:18:38] the plan uh moves on, nothing of that happened, Netanyahu has [00:18:42] described the foot print as [00:18:46] 53% to 60% control over gaza, and [00:18:49] now he is saying the next step is [00:18:53] 70% control over the palestinian coastal [00:18:56] enclave, this is naif, he lives in [00:19:00] distant and has lost his home inside the Israeli [00:19:04] military controlled areas in the gaza strip, as the [00:19:07] yellow line, living very close to the line [00:19:11] determines how much he close and other families in [00:19:15] this neighborhood close to their homes, to their schools [00:19:19] inside those areas, moving the line [00:19:22] on means this family has to [00:19:26] move with it, bullets are [00:19:29] everywhere, we feel threaten all the time, we can't even [00:19:33] sleep at night because of fear, our lives are very difficult. [00:19:51] you can imagine what that means for families living in [00:19:55] this neighborhood? they have been displaced many [00:19:59] times again and again, they set up their [00:20:03] tents, settle down and suddenly [00:20:07] the... told to move again, [00:20:10] negotiations over Trump's Gaza peace plan, the second [00:20:14] phase remains deadlocked, with [00:20:18] this expansion the yellow [00:20:21] line, this means that the area's Israel control is [00:20:24] getting bigger with only one single [00:20:27] fact, less space for Palestinians to [00:20:31] live, Russia is [00:20:35] continuing to attack Ukraine's. energy facilities, that's [00:20:38] despite the so-called energy ceasefire declared by US [00:20:42] president Donald Trump on Sunday. Russia has yet to comment on [00:20:46] Trump's claim, but Ukrainian presidentim Zelensky confirmed several. [00:20:50] gas facilities have been hit since his ceasefire [00:20:53] announcement, in the latest attacks on residential areas, [00:20:57] 15 drones of hit karkiv, injuring 12 people, [00:21:00] including one child. despite the continued russian strike, zelensky a [00:21:04] remote address to the warsaw security forum says he is still [00:21:08] open to an energy cease fire. [00:21:12] this winter, if russia does not agree to an energy [00:21:16] scis fire, we will respond. so [00:21:20] that is why yesterday the American [00:21:24] president's post drew real [00:21:27] interest and really hope that the [00:21:30] energy is far could actually work, we in Ukraine [00:21:34] immediately supported if Russia wants us to [00:21:38] stop our long range strikes against its all [00:21:42] refineries and all exports then Russia [00:21:45] must stop its strikes against our [00:21:49] energy. system and critical [00:21:53] infrastructure and stop kill our [00:21:56] people. Peter [00:22:00] Dickinson is in the Ukrainian capital Kiev where Trump's energy cease [00:22:04] fire seems to be having little or no [00:22:06] effect. Well the only major change we've seen is is [00:22:10] continued Russian attacks so I'm not sure whether that constitutes a change or not [00:22:14] is more more business as usual unfortunately um but certainly within hours [00:22:18] of the announcement being posted. on social media by President [00:22:21] Trump, we had major attack on on one the largest power [00:22:25] stations in the entire country, in fact the largest in East Ukraine, I believe, [00:22:28] in Harakiv, so um, there's certainly no indication at all from the Russian [00:22:32] side that they have any interest in in adhering to this sees [00:22:36] far, whether they even aware of it or whether they they believe that they were party to any [00:22:40] negotiations, it's not clear at all, but what we can say, I think with a with a [00:22:44] high degree of certainty is that they're not going, they're not adhering to it, um, [00:22:48] and Ukraine has been clear, they've said President Zelensky has reiterated [00:22:51] today, Ukraine is ready to adhear to a cease fire, they [00:22:54] proposed cease fires themselves on on numerous occasions of this nature, [00:22:58] energy seasfires, um, but if Russia doesn't um doesn't [00:23:02] reciprocate, if they don't have a bilateral agreement, Ukraine will not stop its [00:23:06] attacks, because these attacks are regarded by the Ukrainians as absolutely [00:23:09] crucial for [00:23:10] the for the war effort and for their national [00:23:11] defense. A Russian foreign minister [00:23:15] Sergei Lavrov has slammed Zelenski saying he does not deserve a [00:23:19] cease fire. "he claims the Ukrainian leader would use the break to reconstitute [00:23:23] his military [00:23:24] force. I [00:23:28] do not believe he has earned [00:23:29] the respite, nor do I think we will once again fall for [00:23:33] assurances and promises. The president has stated this very [00:23:37] clearly. We continue to achieve the objectives the special military [00:23:41] operation. These objectives are well known to [00:23:44] everyone and have never changed, unlike the zigzags [00:23:48] and shifting weams the..." [00:24:20] ongoing, so Russia is essentially playing down the statements made by the [00:24:24] American president, but at the same time spokesman also said that [00:24:28] Moscow really favors and really welcomes all the [00:24:31] efforts the American [00:24:34] envoys with regards to their search of [00:24:37] ways to peace in Ukraine and the negotiators Steve Whitkov [00:24:41] and Jared Kushta have done a great job according to Moscow, [00:24:45] so Russia is now saying that just not their efforts but [00:24:48] also the person contact is something that they welcome here, [00:24:52] but in contrast, there is Europe, and Moscow says that Europe does not [00:24:56] want peace (cran spokesman said they are trying to encourage Ukraine to [00:25:00] continue at the fighting), but at the same time Moscow is also [00:25:04] saying that it remains open for the negotiated and to this [00:25:07] conflict, just before Russia held the uh parliamentary elections in the [00:25:11] middle of September, Moscow says it was ready for the [00:25:14] resumption the negotiations, however the Ukrainian strikes that [00:25:18] were intensified through... out the weekend when Russians were heading to the [00:25:22] polls uh telling us according to the Kremlin very different picture that [00:25:26] Ukraine is not willen so Russia now says that they can stop the [00:25:30] fighting for one day when Ukrainians go to the polin stations to [00:25:34] elect a new president if there is genuine desire in Kieve [00:25:37] to hold the elections, however from the Russian perspective there is no [00:25:41] such desire and Moscow continues to say that what Ukraine is trying [00:25:45] to do is to find the loop hole, [00:25:47] a pretext to end the fighting to... for at [00:25:51] least some period of time that would allow Ukraine in the words of [00:25:55] Russian officials to heal the [00:25:56] wounds. The supreme commander [00:26:00] of NATO in Europe has... also been speaking at the [00:26:04] same security uh forum that we mentioned earlier in the [00:26:07] Polish capital. Intelligence services have been warning Russia's [00:26:11] military may be planning to test NATO's readiness in the [00:26:15] coming weeks. Without mentioning Russia by name, Alexis [00:26:19] Vinkovic said the alliance was ready to respond to [00:26:22] any aggression. If attacked, we are [00:26:26] ready to fight tonight, but we are not complacent. We will continue to [00:26:30] prepare and rehearse each and every day. and we'll be more ready tomorrow [00:26:34] and even more ready the day after [00:26:36] that. I still to come on [00:26:40] this news out. U.S. immigration officials have raided the home of Somali born [00:26:44] Congresswoman Ilhan or as part of investigation [00:26:47] reportedly linked to her immigration paperwork. We'll have more after the [00:26:51] break. [00:26:58] Okay, eyes up everybody. It's [00:27:04] 'the facts and opinions: these people are playing politics with [00:27:08] public safety, the noise and the nuance, they all collide [00:27:11] in the nexus. there is nothing denying about illegal human smuggling. we look at the [00:27:15] story, how it's being told, who benefits, what others are [00:27:18] leaving out and why? it's always the elites who ask for it and the ordinary [00:27:22] people who pay for it. we're all you need to know, Nexus on TRT [00:27:26] World. we're running out of [00:27:30] miracles, we are going back to a pre-antibiotic [00:27:34] world, it's a matter of how quickly we can stem the tide. The answer [00:27:38] isn't a new drug, it's a predator. Every day they [00:27:41] kill 40% of bacteria on our planet. They [00:27:45] keep bacteria in balance, without them we would not [00:27:49] be able to exist. But time is not on our [00:27:53] side. We have to start now. We should have started 10 years [00:27:57] ago. Meet bacteria's ancient [00:28:00] enemy. Storyteller, the [00:28:03] good virus on TRT [00:28:06] World, [00:28:12] biggest problem now, trees that climate change and global [00:28:15] heating, the [00:28:19] world calls for a permanent end to the violence, hundreds of [00:28:23] people are put to do dead or [00:28:25] missing. [00:28:31] Who talks [00:28:31] you to hate [00:28:32] your own time? [00:29:02] come back to the news hour reminder now of our top stories: Saudi Arabia is vowing [00:29:06] a strong response to recent Ansarullah Houti attacks on [00:29:10] Riyard's main international airport. They've also extended the [00:29:13] suspension of all flights to and from Riyard as the Houtis step [00:29:17] up their attacks on the airport and across the [00:29:19] kingdom. Israel's military continues [00:29:23] to expand its so-called yellow line [00:29:26] in eastern Gaza City with more than 65% the strip now [00:29:29] under Israeli army control, the line divides Gaza, [00:29:33] leaving more than 2 million Palestinians confined to a smaller area [00:29:37] than Israeli occupied territory. [00:29:41] Russia is continuing to attack Ukraine despite the so-called [00:29:45] energy seace fire declared by US President Donald Trump on [00:29:49] Sunday. Russia has yet to comment on Trump's claim, but Ukrainian [00:29:53] president Vuladimir Zelenski told the Warsaw Security Forum several [00:29:57] gas facilities have been hit since the ceasefire announcement [00:30:01] as well as residential targets. [00:30:06] a US immigration officials raided the home of Somali born [00:30:09] congresswoman Omar in the early hours of Monday morning. [00:30:13] Omar, democratic US representative of Minnesota, [00:30:17] is an outspoken critic of President Trump, but she said the raid [00:30:21] was an active intimidation and vowed not to be silenced. [00:30:25] Investigation is allegedly related to Armar's [00:30:28] immigration paperwork. North America correspondent [00:30:32] John. brain uh is liferuss in Washington [00:30:35] DC, so uh John, what more are we hearing at [00:30:39] this point about the raid [00:30:41] itself? [00:30:47] Well, this appears to be the latest and certainly the most dramatic development [00:30:51] in what has been a long-running investigation [00:30:54] into Ilan Omar's immigration history [00:30:58] and even her her overall families history, including [00:31:02] claim that she married her brother to get him into the United [00:31:06] States, claim she's dismissed as a disgusting [00:31:09] lie, this morning FBI agents sealed off [00:31:13] the road where she lives here in... washington and they were [00:31:16] seen coming out of her house with various [00:31:20] possessions including documents all part of [00:31:24] this investigation uh now it's significant [00:31:28] because in just 22 days time Ilan Omar will be [00:31:31] asking the people of Minnesota uh those [00:31:35] within her district to vote for her to stay in [00:31:39] Congress and the protocol usually in the United States is [00:31:43] that the justice department does not not carry out operations [00:31:47] like this within 60 days of an [00:31:49] election, even if they believe that a crime has [00:31:53] been committed because they don't want to favor one [00:31:57] side or the other, so obviously critics uh of [00:32:00] this operation and supporters of Ilan Omar are saying that [00:32:04] this is blatant election interference, [00:32:08] yeah and as you say this this has certainly been a stepping up in [00:32:12] this [00:32:13] uh um ongoing uh um war of war if you [00:32:17] like between um Ilan Omar and and President [00:32:20] Trump um uh whom she is an outspoken [00:32:24] critic, so what's been the reaction there to this [00:32:27] development? [00:32:33] well, I mean it depends on which side you're on, Trump will [00:32:37] obviously welcome [00:32:39] this uh, he believes that Ilan Omar is corrupt without having [00:32:42] presented any specific evidence. so far, he's [00:32:46] particularly angered by the Somali community [00:32:50] in America in general, and particularly the Somali community [00:32:54] in Minnesota, where a number of Somali [00:32:58] immigrants have been investigated for a alleged [00:33:01] 250 million dollar fraud - [00:33:04] during COVID, where money which was supposed to go [00:33:08] to children and which uh the authorities have [00:33:12] accused those individuals. of diverting to their [00:33:16] own pockets, now Ilan Omar is [00:33:20] representative of that community, and only two days [00:33:23] ago Trump spoke of her coming for from a country [00:33:27] of crime and squaller, and her [00:33:31] antithesis to Trump is equally strong, she's part [00:33:34] the so-called squad, this is a small group of democrats [00:33:38] in congress, very pro-palestinian and [00:33:42] anti-israeli, she was kicked off the... [00:33:44] affairs committee in 2023 for her [00:33:48] comments about Israel, so she's a very controversial [00:33:52] figure uh, but her supporters, as I say, say [00:33:56] this is all about the election, they've rejected the [00:34:00] claims against her, and Ilan Omer herself says Trump's been [00:34:04] after her for 10 years now, and she says she will not be [00:34:07] silenced. All right, John Brain, life was there [00:34:11] in Washington DC, now British. [00:34:15] Minister Andy Burnham has said it is almost certain that Iran's revolutionary [00:34:19] guard is behind the suspected plot targeting the [00:34:22] RAF fairford airbase located north of London. The incident [00:34:26] occurred last month when several white vans carrying significant amounts [00:34:30] of gasoline tried to enter the the airbase [00:34:33] grounds. UK had authorized the US to use Fairford [00:34:37] for defensive strikes against Iran. [00:34:41] I can confirm our assessment that [00:34:44] it is highly likely to have been coordinated in [00:34:48] Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran's [00:34:51] Islamic revolutionary guard. We will not tolerate these [00:34:55] threats on our soil. We will crack down on Iran's use of [00:34:59] criminal networks, using our full range of powers to target them [00:35:03] and their funding streams. [00:35:06] Iran's ambassador denies any Iranian involvement in the [00:35:10] suspected plot after being summoned over the incident. Our correspondent victoria [00:35:14] inner. has more when it comes to that [00:35:18] incident which took place at RAF Fairford and at the time [00:35:22] it was being seen as an extremely serious [00:35:25] incident. It is perhaps the most detail we have had [00:35:29] so far from the British government as to who was [00:35:33] behind it. What we still don't know is what evidence if [00:35:36] any uh they have at the moment, what perhaps the [00:35:40] motive was? We haven't had any of those details, it [00:35:44] has been. It's fair to say a simply [00:35:48] bizarre incident, we had of course there are a number of suspicious [00:35:52] vehicles, we had seven people in total [00:35:56] arrested, um, many them, some them on explosives and [00:35:59] others on terror charges, um, they were later released on [00:36:03] bail, no explosives, no suspected terror plot um was [00:36:07] found, we had interventions from the US president that [00:36:10] said [00:36:11] he wouldn't have released them given what they... but [00:36:15] from the UK in the last few weeks or so since that incident at the end of [00:36:19] September, we have had not many details at all. police [00:36:23] said just last week that the investigation was moving along well [00:36:27] and that the... public uh should be patient when it came [00:36:31] to the reasons behind it, and then of course we had after a [00:36:34] period um of pause in the British parliament for conference [00:36:38] season, this intervention by the prime minister Andy Burnham in [00:36:42] which he said that it is highly likely that this was [00:36:45] coordinated by in Iran and highly likely by the [00:36:49] Islamic Revolution [00:36:51] regard, Russia is [00:36:54] continuing to attack Ukraine's energy facility. That's despite the so-called [00:36:58] energy seaspire declared by US president Donald Trump on [00:37:02] Sunday. Russia has yet to comment on Trump's claim, but Ukrainian [00:37:06] president Vuladimir Zelensky confirmed several gas [00:37:09] facilities were hit since the announcement. In the latest attacks on [00:37:13] residential areas, 15 drones were hit in Karkiv, injuring [00:37:17] 12 people, including one child. Despite the continued [00:37:21] Russian strike, Zelensky a remote address to the Warsaur [00:37:24] Security Forum says he is still open to energy [00:37:28] cefire: this winter, if Russia [00:37:31] does not agree to an energy fire, we will [00:37:35] respond, so that is why [00:37:39] yesterday the American president's post [00:37:43] drew real interest and real hope [00:37:47] that the energy could actually work, we in [00:37:51] Ukrain immediately supported, if Russia wants us [00:37:55] to stop our long range. against its [00:37:59] oil refineries and oil exports, then Russia [00:38:02] must stop its strikes against our [00:38:06] energy system and [00:38:09] critical infrastructure and stop kill [00:38:13] our people. Let's talk more about [00:38:17] this now with Thomas W. Donald and energy and [00:38:21] geopolitic strategists specializing in global oil markets, [00:38:24] energy security and the geopolitical impact. of [00:38:28] international conflicts, he was also a guest speaker at that [00:38:31] warsaw security forum and joins us from there. thanks very much for [00:38:35] being with us. so let ask you first off uh president [00:38:39] Trump blaming Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil [00:38:42] refineries, but isn't this more down to the [00:38:46] war in Iran that he started and his attempts to address the [00:38:50] public anger back in the US over the high gas prices the [00:38:53] pump, so close to those mid-term elections that are coming up. [00:38:57] "there's a lot in your question, so let me take a pieces: [00:39:01] clearly this has something to do with the upcoming elections, the high [00:39:05] cost of diesel and gas and so forth, after being one of his main [00:39:09] campaign promises from way back, this is issue for him, he wants to get [00:39:12] it down. he's got to know, he's just got to ask the secretary [00:39:16] of of energy, Chris Wright or anybody else in his cabinet, this is [00:39:20] not going to bring diesel prices down before the elections, [00:39:24] so in so far as is that it's theater, now..." on the other [00:39:28] hand, as you say, look, the [00:39:31] attacks on Russian refineries, the truth the matter [00:39:35] is, Ukraine tried this over year ago, and it went fairly well in [00:39:39] the Biden administration, and year ago August, it was the American [00:39:43] CIA and intelligence in Ukraine that proposed [00:39:47] to the Ukrainians the campaign, and they okayed it with Trump, and Trump [00:39:50] supported the campaign, and the campaign has been very successful in [00:39:54] making it difficult for the Russians to wage the war and pay for. the war [00:39:58] now the main problem with the diesel you're right is that horm is not [00:40:02] fully back up to speed, it's coming back up to speed, more [00:40:06] diesel is coming out, the price is coming down, [00:40:09] so [00:40:10] it is this to do with that, but there's something else, there's other things [00:40:13] going to a larger game that trump is playing, i [00:40:17] believe, so [00:40:21] Ukraine [00:40:22] has has argued that the Russian oil facilities are essential [00:40:26] to weakening. ability to finance is war [00:40:29] this war as you've been saying, how effective has this strategy [00:40:33] been and could trump's pressure to hold [00:40:36] these attacks undermine Ukraine's [00:40:39] position? of course it could undermine Ukraine's [00:40:43] position, the United States can put lot of nasty pressure on, and you [00:40:46] remember his first administration, he was very, very nasty when it was had to [00:40:50] do with elections with Biden, so we don't know how far he'll go, [00:40:54] but the shut down diesel and... [00:40:57] gasoline in Russia, like they've been doing, hitting so many [00:41:01] refineries so effectively, makes it very difficult for Russia [00:41:05] to have enough these things for its own population, so the [00:41:09] population feels the lines at the gas station, the farmers [00:41:13] see that there's not enough diesel that Putin is not in control like he [00:41:16] says, they don't have enough diesel for their for their farms and prices are [00:41:20] high, and diesel is one the main things that wars eat up, so he [00:41:24] needs it for the front, Mr. Putin does, so it's very effective. [00:41:27] but more so than that, as they develop this [00:41:31] campaign against the refineries and get heavier [00:41:35] weapons that they can hit ports, they could stop all exports from [00:41:39] Russia and... and Russia in the winter time, literally the [00:41:42] pipelines would back up to West Siberia, those old fields would freeze [00:41:46] up, they could destroy Russia as a petro state, which is [00:41:50] exactly what the US Senate and House wanted to do with [00:41:54] this bill that was recently passed, the Lindsay Grand Bill, bone breaking [00:41:58] sanctions, suddenly Trump goes against this, and we're [00:42:02] trying to guess what his game is, clearly to do with elections, but there's [00:42:05] other things, he threatened many other things over the last month or [00:42:09] two. starting from September, he was telling the Europeans we [00:42:13] just found out at when he was at the general assembly, he was telling the [00:42:17] other Europeans they had to give back Russia's money that's in that they've [00:42:21] frozen in Europe, which is amazing, [00:42:23] you know, and he's saying I'll restart the North stream one and two pipeline [00:42:27] and fix it, and the Americans will buy it and help Putin, all these [00:42:31] things that he tried months ago when he first came in power, [00:42:34] enticements economic enticements to Putin that didn't work, everybody in his [00:42:38] cabinet knows it didn't, work, that's why they change their strategy and [00:42:42] inflicted pain on him, so why is he going back to this? what's his [00:42:45] game? it it seems quite [00:42:48] desperate. you're attending the warsaw [00:42:52] security forum there where European leaders have expressed [00:42:55] concerns about Washington's changing [00:42:58] approach to Russia. what are you hearing from people there that you [00:43:02] spoken to perhaps about the implications for [00:43:06] European energy security and the wider western? [00:43:10] strategy towards Ukraine? Let let me just say, I [00:43:14] think the situation in Europe is more mature, and there's a [00:43:17] number there's a number of people from the senate [00:43:21] and the head the senate armed forces committee is here, was [00:43:24] republican and and democratics [00:43:27] also, and when Trump did this sort of thing against [00:43:31] Zelinsky year, two years, three years ago, there is much more [00:43:34] emotionalism, I would say, outburs, it's much more sober [00:43:38] now, much more analytical. "and one thing people are saying, which I've [00:43:42] said also, I think [00:43:43] is true, his [00:43:45] plan won't work, the Russians would have to have [00:43:48] weeks without being hit by the Ukrainians, repair the [00:43:51] refineries, take weeks to build up diesel and start exporting [00:43:55] it, it's well after the American elections, so it can't be about that, and [00:43:59] Trump knows this, so um, the [00:44:03] Ukrainians also will not stop hitting these refineries if [00:44:07] Russia doesn't stop hitting their power plant." they want, they [00:44:11] agreed, Trump pressured them, and they said fine, Zelinsky said, fine, we'll [00:44:15] have an energy truth, but today Lavrof four [00:44:19] or five hours ago was on the news and said, the Ukrainians don't [00:44:22] deserve to have a truth, we'll take these, we'll take [00:44:26] the diesel deal, but we're not going to stop hitting their stuff, well that's not going to work, [00:44:30] Ukrainians will keep hitting the refineries, so it's it's simply something it's [00:44:34] not going to work, and the the Americans that were here [00:44:38] from the Congress and local officials are much more sober [00:44:42] about this, that this is unseemly what Trump is doing, perhaps [00:44:45] illegal, and it's just not going to work and we we're not going to go along with [00:44:49] it. good to talk to you, Thomas Donald [00:44:53] joining us there from uh Warsaw, thanks for your perspective, thank [00:44:57] you sir. now in France, hundreds of [00:45:00] supermarkets were hit by an unprecedented cyber attack [00:45:04] that heated fridges and freezers up to 50 degrees [00:45:08] celsius, fires. and large-scale food damage thought to be worth [00:45:12] millions of dollars has been reported and some the country's biggest supermarket [00:45:16] chains were hit including carfour which said [00:45:19] 80 of its stores were affected. Peter allen [00:45:23] is live from Paris with uh [00:45:26] more uh on this um Peter I got to tell you lot of us we're [00:45:30] pretty shocked at hearing uh this news, it's it's it's almost [00:45:34] bizarre a way that uh that that [00:45:37] that there's a technology that's capable of doing this. what's been the [00:45:41] reaction there? what what are we hearing more about [00:45:42] this? well, you're [00:45:46] quite right, it's an absolutely extraordinary event, [00:45:50] something that has captured the imagination the French [00:45:53] consumer, and of course very negative way. i've [00:45:57] just been getting lot of technical details about what [00:46:01] happened through one the large supermarkets [00:46:04] affected, and what actually happened was that [00:46:07] hackers managed to get through to an old [00:46:11] software program which um [00:46:14] affected around [00:46:17] 400 supermarkets, that's a significant [00:46:20] num number, yes there are 15,00 odd supermarkets across [00:46:24] France, but 400, including many here in [00:46:28] central Paris being hit in this way is of course [00:46:32] um something of huge concern. what I'm hearing is that it was [00:46:36] a Danish company called Danny Foss. [00:46:40] which was regulating these temperatures independently, [00:46:43] remotely from outside the supermarkets, and their old [00:46:47] software, they are arguing, was [00:46:51] affected by these... hackers, they are saying they accusing the [00:46:54] supermarket of not updating their software to prevent an [00:46:58] attack like this. they're saying it's [00:47:00] a security problem. they told the supermarket how to deal with [00:47:04] it because they feared attack like this, but the attack [00:47:07] happened on Sunday. lot of managers came in on Monday [00:47:11] morning and they found anything up to half their stock completely [00:47:14] ruined, millions of dollars worth of food [00:47:18] ruined. of course, food security is huge issue for [00:47:22] any... uh modern society, any ancient society as well, but [00:47:25] particularly now when you have um uh [00:47:28] fridges and freezers and the like which is so vulnerable to [00:47:32] attack, these were vulnerable to attack and the hackers managed to get [00:47:36] in, a prosecution has been launch, prosecutors are [00:47:39] trying to find out who is behind all that, there is already [00:47:43] suspicion that russians might uh be behind it, whenever there's a [00:47:47] hacking incident here in France, they always blame the Russians, but of course they need the [00:47:51] evidence to... move it, but huge huge concern here at the [00:47:54] moment. so what are, and I know it's early days, but what [00:47:58] are the supermarkets doing about this? obviously consumers are going to be a bit [00:48:02] freaked out by this, what, what reassurances can they have that [00:48:06] this this won't happen [00:48:07] again? well, what [00:48:11] this supermarket effectively doing is saying that they are going to improve their [00:48:15] software, it's a simple as that in the short term, in the long term [00:48:18] they'll have to look at other systems that might be vulnerable to attack, but far [00:48:22] as these remote uh controllers their [00:48:26] refrigerators are concerned, again it's this particular company that [00:48:30] keeps coming up called Danny Foss, it's a Danish company, they have [00:48:34] said they have the power to improve security to completely stop these [00:48:37] attacks, all that the supermarkets have to do is update their [00:48:40] software and things should be all right, so if [00:48:44] anything it's a cold lesson, literally a cold lesson, I excuse the pun, I didn't mean [00:48:48] it there, but um it is huge lesson for the supermarket, one that [00:48:52] they... to learn from, and uh, again, this software company [00:48:56] says it has learned from it, it will be taking uh [00:48:59] measures to uh, cancel out this possible [00:49:03] hacking, and food security will continue to be [00:49:07] of huge concern here in France hazim, don't [00:49:11] mind the puns at all, Peter, we love them, thanks very much for that update, Peter allen [00:49:14] in Paris, [00:49:18] now thousands of people have marched towards India's [00:49:22] supreme. court as widespread protests over alleged [00:49:25] electoral fraud continued to rock the country, opposition parties and [00:49:29] supporters the youth-led cockroach janta movement had been on [00:49:33] the streets almost daily this month. mhammed haji [00:49:36] reports. [00:49:41] it could be one the biggest political challenges India's government has [00:49:45] faced in more than decade as new week brought a fresh wave [00:49:49] of unrest. Security [00:49:53] measures described as fortress like in New Delhi, once [00:49:56] again thousands of people marched through its [00:49:59] streets. Leading them in the front [00:50:03] left seat the bus and fresh from his own detention was opposition [00:50:07] leader Rahul Gandhi, and people are seeing the Narendra [00:50:11] Modi is blocking the whole town. [00:50:13] He is putting 30,000, 40,000 police offices outside, [00:50:17] for what? Until the constitution is upheld, until the election [00:50:21] commissioner resigned. until the election system is [00:50:24] revamped, until India gets justice, the youth [00:50:28] of this country won't stop, do whatever you [00:50:31] want. This march was headed to the [00:50:35] Supreme Court to submit a petition calling for his [00:50:38] impeachments. He is guilty, they say, [00:50:42] of electoral fraud. Today everything is [00:50:46] in their hands. They have taken control of everything and we're out on the [00:50:50] streets fighting for those rights. for that voice, for the [00:50:54] voice the people. protesters have [00:50:58] been out almost daily this month. over the past [00:51:01] three though, they say police have become more [00:51:05] heavy-handed. thousands of people were [00:51:08] detained. they've also been blocked from the city's [00:51:11] biggest protest sites. they're now calling on the government to let [00:51:15] them in, and if it doesn't. if you don't give us [00:51:19] date in the next 24 hours, then we will... be compelled to give another [00:51:23] call for a protest and will have no choice but to hit the [00:51:27] streets. the electoral commission has denied [00:51:31] favoring any party with the changes, saying deleted voters can [00:51:34] reapply, while the ruling party has accused the [00:51:38] opposition of trying to destabilize India and seize [00:51:41] power. it is the prime minister silence though, that [00:51:45] many find defening. all while protesters [00:51:49] vow to raise their voices even louder. [00:52:01] A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Pakistan. [00:52:05] protest there in support the jailed former prime minister Imran [00:52:09] Khan, police fired warning shots at demonstrators in [00:52:12] kaibaa a northwestern province, governed by the [00:52:16] PTI, that's the party of Imran Khan. The state of emergency [00:52:20] ruling brings the province under direct federal control. Prime [00:52:24] Minister Shahbas Sharif accused the local PTI government of failing [00:52:28] to maintain law and order. From Islamabad, Kamran Yusuf [00:52:31] tells us if the declaration the state of emergency. in the [00:52:35] northern province affects the capital [00:52:39] Pakistan Tahike Insaf a party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan who is [00:52:42] currently in jail, they are angry, they have termed it a [00:52:46] black day when the federal government imposed emergency and [00:52:50] governor's rule, but on the ground situation in [00:52:54] Islamabad very much normal, you may see just [00:52:58] behind a shipping containers blocking one the roads [00:53:01] leading to the key government installations, but these... containers have been [00:53:05] placed for the last couple of weeks in anticipation [00:53:09] of opposition's protest, but now we are getting reports that [00:53:13] authorities have decided to remove all these containers [00:53:17] and other security measures, this means that [00:53:20] authorities no longer anticipate or expect [00:53:24] that the protests may reach Islamabad. the reason [00:53:27] is after the imposition of emergency and governor's [00:53:31] rule, authorities have detained hundreds of [00:53:35] PTI activist leaders including now the [00:53:39] suspended chief minister the province who according to the police [00:53:43] is under protective custody in Pishawar the provincial [00:53:46] capital uh there are reports that there is less [00:53:50] than usual traffic schools both the government and the [00:53:53] private are currently shut and this [00:53:57] morning the newly appointed council led by the [00:54:00] governor presided over a meeting to decide how to [00:54:05] move forward, so a political temperature may be high, but as [00:54:09] far as the situation on the ground in the capital is concerned, that is [00:54:12] pretty much normal. Bangladesh is [00:54:16] preparing to bring its first nuclear power plant [00:54:20] online, hoping ease the persistent electricity [00:54:23] shortages. The Russian-built project has brought jobs and investment, but [00:54:27] years of delays and concerns among some nearby [00:54:31] residents have tempered expectations. Unis demolu reports. [00:54:38] Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant has yet to generate [00:54:41] electricity, but in this nearby classroom, it's [00:54:45] already sparking ambitions. My friends and I want [00:54:49] to become scientists, and we hope to work at the plant after graduating in [00:54:52] nuclear engineering. The $13 billion dollar project [00:54:56] promises a major new reliable source of electricity for a country [00:55:00] reliant on fossil fuels and struggling with frequent power cuts. [00:55:04] Once operational, its two reactors are expected to meet more than [00:55:07] 10% of national electricity demand, a significant input [00:55:11] for a country of almost 180 million people. plant [00:55:15] management says the first reactor is scheduled to start up by the end of this [00:55:19] year, built with Russia state nuclear company Rosatom, the [00:55:22] project has brought thousands of Russian workers and new business to the area, [00:55:26] but the pandemic and sanctions on Russia have contributed to delays [00:55:30] and for some neighbors, anticipation is being tempered by [00:55:33] concern. [00:55:34] how much? [00:56:05] "I hope we get electricity for 24 hours without interruption as the [00:56:09] plant is near my home. For Bangladesh, the promise extends well [00:56:13] beyond Rupur. Reliable electricity can keep factories running, [00:56:17] farms irrigated and homes lit.
