A heartbreaking video currently trending on [00:06:32] social media has ignited nationwide conversation about empathy, [00:06:36] privacy and the boundaries of content creation. The [00:06:40] video captures the exact mode. [00:06:42] ment a patient passed away a hospital general ward as the reality [00:06:46] the loss sank in. The deceased family members broke down in [00:06:50] overwhelming grief, wailing uncontrollably, collapsing to the [00:06:54] floor and consoling one another in one the most [00:06:57] painful moments any family can experience, but just [00:07:01] few feet away was another man who was reportedly in the [00:07:05] hospital caring for his own sick relative, rather than offering comfort [00:07:09] or respecting family's privacy, he took out his phone. [00:07:12] recorded their raw moment of grief and shared the video on social [00:07:16] media. The footage has since gone viral, dividing public opinion. Many have [00:07:20] describe the act as deeply insensitive, arguing that no [00:07:24] family's darkest moment should become content without their consent. Others [00:07:28] believe the video is powerful reminder the reality of death, saying [00:07:32] it encourages people to value life, reconcile with loved ones [00:07:35] and appreciate every moment. So where should the line be [00:07:39] drawn? As the race for views, and virality [00:07:43] diminish the humanity, should there be ethical limits to what [00:07:47] we record and post online, even in public [00:07:50] spaces, or is documenting real life events [00:07:54] simply reflection the world we now living? what are your thoughts on [00:07:57] this? out of respect for the grieving family and in view the sensitive [00:08:01] nature the incident, we have chosen not to air or [00:08:05] amplify the viral video. our discussion today is intended to [00:08:09] examine the ethical issues surrounding the recording and sharing. of such [00:08:13] deeply personal moments, not to sensionalize the family's loss, so please join [00:08:17] the conversation by [00:08:37] and i you would feel the pain, this [00:08:40] is um it is [00:08:43] raw and it is very close to [00:08:47] home cuz i remember on saturday was in my friend's house when i heard of [00:08:51] coach laraakud i see d mom passing and [00:08:54] literally i broke down i have never grived like that [00:08:58] because i just discussed with her that were trying to get buy baby stuff to go and [00:09:02] visit her in our house so it was very shocking my kids were [00:09:06] there everybody was there they were coming to check on me the grandmom heard me crying from [00:09:09] upstairs was like and like don't worry, so imagine [00:09:13] somebody recording that moment and posting online for what [00:09:17] lesson? anyway, that's my opinion, some the opinion that it reminds us that life is [00:09:21] short, nima, what was your initial reaction to that [00:09:23] video? i've been on this side of this [00:09:27] conversation, i think people should i, i know is selfish is a selfish [00:09:31] world and content creation is tough, so everything you see [00:09:35] is content, i wonder how people pull [00:09:39] this through and you know nothing breaks in them. [00:09:43] to see someone in their most vulnerable situation and then [00:09:47] you hold a video when you are not in any [00:09:50] way in need of evidence, so things can happen, maybe you're [00:09:54] the ocada driver and somebody is [00:09:57] you know having epileptic episode in your cader or [00:10:01] your keke or your taxi, it will require some evidence in case things go [00:10:05] wrong, i would exempt when you are going to be subject [00:10:09] of any investigation, but look at this video and i know lot the... should have seen [00:10:13] it, just search it, it will pop up, [00:10:16] somebody's family lost their bread [00:10:20] winner, most loved one or loved one, whatever the situation is, [00:10:24] and you are on this side? you were able to hold a [00:10:26] camera through their pain and nothing [00:10:30] shifted. well there's reminder of your because you're with your own sick [00:10:33] relative who any minute you could just [00:10:37] flip it can flip - and nothing shifted. i don't know, [00:10:41] but i think is also good for their mental health because [00:10:44] the overworring that i go through, i see some people the they just live through [00:10:48] life, they don't worry, i [00:10:52] dis it's something i envy, disagree [00:10:54] with that. i wish, i wish i can get to point where you won't get to you, it won't [00:10:58] get to me, [00:11:00] you know that i'm learning how to walk away from [00:11:03] somebody crying, because i can be there the old [00:11:07] day and i will carry the weight of that grief for weeks and nobody in my [00:11:11] house knows where i carried it from, i can read the story [00:11:15] in the paper, nobody understands how everybody, but me [00:11:19] i'm still walking around with the weight of it, i need to unlearn it, so i'm [00:11:23] doing that deliberately. and i don't know how these people do these [00:11:27] things, it just doesn't, it's not, it's just not me, i have [00:11:31] to learn it in my older age, because sometimes days i have not moved [00:11:34] on, everybody have moved on, the reason why they do it their own, [00:11:38] to be you can go to be selfish enough to put camera is something i [00:11:42] can, no, the reason why they do their own is because of bad [00:11:45] intention, because you know [00:11:49] tell me where is the empathy, because this this topic just lies in the [00:11:53] intersection of ethics. our culture [00:11:57] as africans, technology, this new technology [00:12:01] thing now and the law, because tell me why [00:12:04] something drastic or something so emotional heartbreaking happens, you [00:12:08] took your time, look at the way he he set the camera, his [00:12:12] first instinct, how can your first instinct [00:12:16] be to like hold the camera, set it [00:12:20] too, then even when you even post it even put arrow so we can see the [00:12:23] dead person. it and then like who are [00:12:27] you, who gave bird to you, what kind of a person are you? do you understand? [00:12:31] that's your first, humanity should always should come before this content, every keep [00:12:35] saying it here, what this social media will not cause, it's plenty, so [00:12:39] you try to tell me that okay, we understand that some people might argue that is a public space, [00:12:43] okay no problem, hospital bed paid for when a sh does that give [00:12:47] you the right, the give you consent that i'm grieving lost person and then [00:12:51] i wake up and my picture, my family picture and my my the person [00:12:55] i'm grieving is in public space how arrow pointing how [00:12:59] dare you is the audacity for me so i try to say that if people are in hospital and [00:13:03] shared spaces maybe someone is is having a surge maybe their private part or [00:13:07] maybe their breast a part their body that for the fact that you're sharing a corner with [00:13:10] them that the whole body should come out on social media are you i [00:13:14] say how dare you is that's it so in these cases even [00:13:18] though is a public space is shared space the [00:13:22] law also cover protects people protects your privacy, [00:13:26] because different thing if he was recording himself and he captured [00:13:29] them by error, but this wasn't that he captured them by [00:13:32] error [00:13:37] capturing put a [00:13:37] it system, edited to put around to point, he made [00:13:41] them a story and they did not subscribe to act in his movie, i think is [00:13:45] actionable, here we are [00:13:48] today, [00:13:49] i remember many years ago when social media just [00:13:53] started blowing up and we started seeing people going to funerals and [00:13:57] taking selfies with the dead body and we were discussing it, [00:14:01] well, maybe not, maybe now, here we are, everything you saw [00:14:05] today, you will repeat in 10 fols, hundred folds [00:14:09] going down the line, so this conversation for me [00:14:12] is what will we do as a country, what is the [00:14:16] decision we're going to take as a country [00:14:20] concerning how we use social media, what we allow on [00:14:24] social media? countries like China have since understood that [00:14:27] it is very important to regulate it in such a [00:14:31] way that humanity, [00:14:34] privacy is protected, but [00:14:38] we are still going on and using social media [00:14:41] anyhow and anyway, even Europe and [00:14:44] America where this all started, every time [00:14:48] on social media, I'm seeing videos upon videos of influential [00:14:52] people having conversations with their government. sitting down at round [00:14:56] tables with government talking about regulating [00:14:59] this this thing that we call social [00:15:03] media, we're not saying that it does not have its good sides when we have used it [00:15:06] in many ways to better our lives and do better for each other and our [00:15:10] countries, but there is a bad a flip side and that [00:15:14] flip side if we do not [00:15:17] quickly do something the sort of videos will be [00:15:21] seeing especially since content has been monetized the sort of content. [00:15:25] we be seeing will be so shocked, will be so embarrassed, shocked and it [00:15:28] will cause um widespread [00:15:32] anger and grief and and and and commotion, so what are [00:15:36] we going to do? It's easy to just talk about, oh, how can he do it, how [00:15:40] did he do it? He did it because he can do it a country that allows him to do [00:15:44] it, as a country, as a government, what is the next [00:15:47] step? Let's not just look at these videos as just one story [00:15:51] in one area, far away, or just bad behavior, let [00:15:55] us take a stand as a country, what do we want, how do [00:15:59] we want to be represented on social media if other countries can do [00:16:02] it, we can do it, when we went to China, I remember I met a couple [00:16:06] of um... Chinese girls and we were talking wanted to [00:16:10] change social uh exchange numbers and social media whatever and they were like [00:16:13] oh um we're not on whatever you need to find us on this this [00:16:17] this and I just and they were so comfortable this are they are [00:16:20] educated yes exactly that's why I'm going they didn't have [00:16:24] any there's nothing missing in them they were well spoken they spoke their [00:16:28] Chinese and spoke English with me they wanted to know they're curious about me I asked them [00:16:31] question so there's nothing that they lost [00:16:34] everything they had so there's nothing that missing [00:16:38] out because you are allowed to just use social media [00:16:42] however and [00:16:43] you know so we need to just for me conversations like this is not just [00:16:47] about today oh my god how wicked he is we hear you what is the next [00:16:51] step to take let's take [00:17:16] and thanks for staying with us. Is there any positives to this? Is there any silver [00:17:20] lining in terms the fact that maybe this is to remind us [00:17:23] of those that were saying is to remind us that life is [00:17:26] fical and that people can pass in one second? Is there [00:17:30] any? Is there does anybody see that [00:17:32] the consumer? Not at all. Okay, so we all agree that there's [00:17:36] no. in their family [00:17:38] is death now, it's not not a [00:17:40] exclusive, [00:17:44] exactly, exclusive [00:17:45] it's to a certain sort of people, there's no [00:17:49] excuse, so this idea of content [00:17:51] creation and we just tend to [00:17:55] just because of monetization, how [00:17:59] do we ensure that we don't lose all form of [00:18:02] decorum, um, empathy and boundaries [00:18:06] because we want to generate. create content [00:18:10] um, i have to call myself out because since they [00:18:13] monetized we have be very serious on facebook and i realized that when [00:18:17] i posted me and my son the first time i got a few dollars so the [00:18:21] second time we came to work took a selfie and posted again and when i [00:18:25] took picture with my yesterday was like are you going to post it on facebook maybe [00:18:28] later but i knew my mother was going i knew was going to make me money and i just call to [00:18:32] me i have the question that when you get monetized - the change is not [00:18:36] sudden. 'you just realize you see what [00:18:40] is bringing money is shamelessness, [00:18:44] you did not do the shamelessness consciously the first time, but he got you money and [00:18:48] they will give you data to show this is what brought you the most money last month, [00:18:52] oh this content did i just did in my, i was [00:18:55] not even arranged, he brought me money, then you do another one then it [00:18:58] becomes learned thing, i was seeing more of it [00:19:02] online, so when we see candid moments, people that capture candid [00:19:06] moments they get viral'. and they make money, so we will end up [00:19:10] having more candid, is [00:19:11] there a way we can have regulation to stop this, or is it just [00:19:15] case of we would educate ourselves by going to [00:19:18] court, maybe if they su this guy and he has to pay money, what how [00:19:22] can we curb this or or this conversation is enough, what [00:19:26] can we do? conversation is not enough, we need to do [00:19:30] serious sensitization, i don't know what we are teaching in our [00:19:34] schools, but [00:19:34] i don't think any of our schools, particularly from primary school. [00:19:37] is teaching empathy, they [00:19:39] are no longer teaching empathy, people no longer celebrate [00:19:43] empathy, we call them smart, we call them the most outspoken [00:19:47] one, we don't have focus on the weak ones, and so we grow up and [00:19:51] we continue things like this, it should be thought that you know this is their time [00:19:55] of grief, this is how you should comport yourself and parents too should teach their [00:19:59] kids, you know how it is done, how it should be done, i [00:20:03] don't know whether [00:20:26] content creation thing, especially [00:20:29] now with DJ and all of that. I feel [00:20:33] like um, we're adding lot of carelessness to [00:20:37] it and... is conscious carelessness, let [00:20:41] me use an example, now let's say that that the [00:20:44] family, the grieving family had military [00:20:48] uniform, [00:20:51] you now they saw that there were military men around there, i bet [00:20:55] you that guy or whoever did made that video would not [00:20:59] have tried that thing would with the opportunity given [00:21:03] the opportunity that person would not, because he is fully aware or [00:21:07] she is fully aware, whoever held the camera is fully aware [00:21:11] that guy, if this video [00:21:13] comes out, this military people will do me way no good, do you [00:21:17] understand? then look at our... content creators [00:21:21] when they go abroad, when they are here, they [00:21:25] make careless videos, i don't care whoever appears, whatever [00:21:29] appears in the video, they don't care, when they move abroad, [00:21:33] you see the kind of videos that they make, they only make videos when [00:21:37] they are with when they are indoors in the confined [00:21:40] space, yeah, because they are fully aware that there are [00:21:43] consequences, do you understand what i mean, [00:21:47] yes, so these people, in as much as you know what, trying to say, [00:21:50] okay, yeah, social media is this, social media is that, we should confine, but [00:21:54] we our people are aware, they are fully [00:21:58] aware, the make full conscious [00:22:01] decisions, [00:22:07] so you said [00:22:08] you know something about how monetizing content sort [00:22:12] of slowly changes you, um, the change [00:22:16] happened even long before the monetization, that's how it slowly changes. you [00:22:20] because then it was even for validation for the likes and the [00:22:23] comments you know and we're human beings [00:22:27] you find yourself just um unintentionally morfing [00:22:31] into what you believe people would yeah [00:22:34] accept and also validate you in form of likes [00:22:38] and um comments and now money of course as we know with money [00:22:41] amplifies everything so to that this one now [00:22:45] is a personal level there's some people that their business their work [00:22:50] I said in the beginning, social media has its good sides of course, but you [00:22:54] have to be very careful, you have to [00:22:58] be conscious and intentional of what your message [00:23:01] is, who am I, first of all, what is the message [00:23:05] I want to send, and how does this represent [00:23:09] myself, my brand, my message? If any point you think that [00:23:13] you are pushed to post a content or video, whatever it [00:23:16] is, or even a speech that does not reflect. who you [00:23:20] are, what you are, no matter how trending or how much you will make your [00:23:24] how much, please take a step backwards, change, [00:23:28] don't don't post it, so personally that is how we should deal with [00:23:32] it, but secondly we're talking about [00:23:34] raising, lot of us can have that self awareness bause we're [00:23:38] coming from a time before now, so we have it, but then we're also [00:23:42] now have a generation that were raised on social media, so [00:23:46] they don't even have any what they know that makes it, [00:23:49] what is important to them is how they are received on social media, so they will go as [00:23:53] far as they want, so they may not necessarily have this thing that we [00:23:57] have, this filter, that's where parenting comes in, that's where mentoring comes in, and [00:24:01] that is where government policy must come in as well, buse [00:24:05] not everybody has the privilege of having [00:24:08] parents or schools or community that sees [00:24:12] this as a bad thing, we watched or there was [00:24:16] a video that went viral of mother giving her b [00:24:20] maybe um sexual activity and [00:24:24] she was streaming it in this country woman was [00:24:28] was sexually abusing her child and she put [00:24:31] it online and people watched and she got money [00:24:35] so honestly concerning this boy that has or this person that has put [00:24:39] this video i know that it is bad but it's just one the [00:24:43] many horrible things happening on social media [00:24:46] now and i'm saying to our government don't put hands like this [00:24:50] and be looking, it's a serious situation, it may not [00:24:54] seem like much, but it is lot, right now you [00:24:58] may think it's just one person behaving badly, but it can get [00:25:01] worse, you don't want one day, we have videos of maybe people [00:25:05] abroad, [00:25:06] you i know someone was let, okay you have call, okay let me just [00:25:10] quickly you know i've seen people who have put videos of one she put up a [00:25:14] video of her going into like a bank and vault and things like that [00:25:18] buse she was not thinking it was bringing her views and she lost her [00:25:22] job and access to that place and we're going to find people like that, somebody [00:25:25] goes to works in central bank and decides to open up things or works [00:25:29] with the presidency and decides to open up things that should not be opened [00:26:17] so um, [00:26:18] you know, this brings me back to what i always see, you [00:26:21] know, the root, um, that's [00:26:24] parenting, value system, [00:26:28] because we can create content without sacrificing [00:26:32] and..." dignity, we can create content [00:26:35] without sacrificing our family's [00:26:38] dignity, you see back in the [00:26:41] day and when you go to someone's house and then parents used [00:26:45] to do this thing, they say who are you, what is your name, [00:26:48] what is your father's name, who is your father, who is your mother, we [00:26:51] used to think that it was a prideful thing, it wasn't, because that parent needs to [00:26:55] know who are you and where are you coming from, who raised [00:26:58] you, what is your value system, is it acceptable in our home? [00:27:02] do we share the same value system those that no later [00:27:06] they say changing to look like a thing of maybe pride and segregation [00:27:09] and the power strug like as no that was not the main reason of that [00:27:13] question parents used to ask in those days we need to [00:27:17] do so that you need to know whether my child and your child whether the way i see your parents and the way they brought [00:27:21] you up whether he's in single whether you you can be friends with my child whether you can [00:27:25] marry my child those are the reasons and that [00:27:28] brings me to this particular issue of monetization [00:27:35] you you're monetizing money you like it, but I bet you that there are certain things you won't put out [00:27:39] there because of money, of course not, [00:27:42] 419 brings money, human [00:27:46] sacrifice and the this thing brings money and selling of human [00:27:50] organs, but you don't do those things because the way we are [00:27:54] brought up, because of your value system, you [00:27:56] when the hear where they said you say to means [00:28:00] that god forbid that no. and then you [00:28:04] find out that when you come from a community, when you're raised [00:28:07] well, when you have family unit, and family units [00:28:11] also has extended family units, there are certain things you cannot do, the certain [00:28:15] things you cannot put on this social media, let tell you, you think of your [00:28:19] mother, you think of your father, you think of your so [00:28:22] maybe your phone will start, there's something you post, your phone will start ringing, all [00:28:26] your family members, take it down, take it [00:28:29] down, do you understand, but you find that most these [00:28:33] people they don't have community, they don't have family, they don't have where they are coming from, they don't [00:28:36] have [00:28:37] the who they are scared of, they don't they are listening to, they don't, they don't have who's [00:28:41] going to point it out to them because it's just money, so what they don't have any [00:28:45] value system, government [00:28:48] government, you understand, because even if government let us start [00:28:52] from the core, from ourselves as what do you think is [00:28:56] right and wrong, so [00:29:00] if so that when government wants to regulate, then [00:29:03] you can work faster, but if you don't difference between right and [00:29:07] wrong, we still f. i don't think [00:29:11] anybody knows [00:29:12] the difference, don't know the difference between right and wrong, i think people just [00:29:15] believe they can get away with it in societies where they can get away [00:29:19] with, if they don't know it in Nigeria, how come these people that they can do things here when they [00:29:23] relocate to another country because the environment [00:29:27] policy, [00:29:31] people don't. is worshipping the law so you do a video influencer [00:29:35] does a video so the moment get a [00:29:38] smartphone i will be rolling like that anyway i am if i'm [00:29:42] in the toilet i'll just hold the camera and be rolling i want that video and i will [00:29:46] be talking anything inside without processing what i'm saying and [00:29:50] that's for me is what everybody has been doing with their video because that's what i've [00:29:53] seen people do with their video which is just imitating [00:29:57] is common and is common now is anyhow he must be [00:30:16] to once again, thank you for the topic, it's um, it's [00:30:19] always nice and refreshing when topical issues [00:30:23] that is happening in society is been brought [00:30:27] up, now on this matter, i know that the family, yes they [00:30:30] might [00:30:31] be grieving, know that it's possible that the family will or [00:30:35] can sue that person, it can even sue the hospital because [00:30:39] actually you are supposed to have what you call healthcare centers and [00:30:43] other public places are supposed to have what you call uh public [00:30:46] liability you insurance that person can sue them even can [00:30:50] sue the person who took the pictures but like all the ladies have said guess [00:30:54] it goes beyond that particular incident is actually like [00:30:57] um one the consequences the society.
