[00:02:14] a began our journey to ijede, a community in
[00:02:17] Ikorodu area of Lagos
[00:02:19] of State. The Oladun Joyee family had
[00:02:23] granted our request to speak about their struggle raising
[00:02:27] three girls with Albinism.
[00:02:30] arrival, Mrs. welcomed me to
[00:02:34] their home. the girls
[00:02:38] excitement fills the room, unaware that their story
[00:02:41] reflects the experience of many families raising
[00:02:45] children without binnism. you see people, they will
[00:02:49] start
[00:02:49] calling,
[00:02:54] sometimes i'm always scared that hope they will not be
[00:02:57] a allergic to this, hope they won't be allergic to this. so I'm always
[00:03:00] careful giving them something, especially the food, some people
[00:03:04] cross you on the road, like have this mind to stop you and ask
[00:03:08] question, are you sure you are the one that gave bird to this, I

[00:03:57] sister, even learns how to paint. from her.

[00:04:04] years old and does not understand the harsh
[00:04:08] realities that people like our
[00:04:10] face. For the three white girls,
[00:04:14] albeanism is not a limitation, but source of strength on their
[00:04:18] journey on reaching their full potential. Through confidence and
[00:04:22] determination, they have proven that the society cannot
[00:04:25] silence their gods given abilities.

[00:05:21] don't want you to be disturbed, despite daniela's confidence
[00:05:25] and a dream of becoming an explorer, she says
[00:05:29] that being a person with albinism comes with lot of
[00:05:32] discomforts, us to play any used to run
[00:05:36] and sweat and play in the sun, they even play football
[00:05:40] outside and so people might injure. and i cannot do them and i don't
[00:05:44] like stress and i used to sweat
[00:05:48] so much like finished, i've just
[00:05:52] came out the bathroom. she also shared that making new
[00:05:55] friends can be difficult as other children
[00:05:59] often run away from - they don't want to play with me
[00:06:03] and sometimes i asked them be my friend they
[00:06:06] said no, sometimes i asked them again, are you my friend? they say yes
[00:06:10] and i'm confused. Beyond emotional
[00:06:13] support, raising children with albinism also
[00:06:17] comes with another challenge, financial responsibility,
[00:06:21] for both parents, having another child with
[00:06:24] albinism is not an option. I don't want another
[00:06:28] child, you already know what is uh, what you are
[00:06:31] spending, you already know the challenges, then you want to have another one,
[00:06:35] you want not to have another challenge to what you
[00:06:39] are, what you already facing, if you check their skin, see
[00:06:42] that their skin very smooth like their mother would say
[00:06:46] extra care, that one is money, buy this, buy
[00:06:50] this, buy this money, then the are you want to them to be the
[00:06:54] best in the class again, is another thing, thank
[00:06:57] you, for deeper insights into the condition,
[00:07:01] i visited the lagos state university teaching hospital the
[00:07:05] next day where i met dr cole, a
[00:07:08] dermatologist and advocate for people living with albinis
[00:07:13] She explains what albinism is and allies the
[00:07:17] sun as one the greatest threats to those living with the
[00:07:21] condition, it's inherited from both
[00:07:24] parents, but it's what we call recessive gene,
[00:07:28] meaning that
[00:07:29] you know both parents may be carriers, but they can have a
[00:07:33] child that has albinism, and this gene
[00:07:37] that is a bit different is the gene that controls the
[00:07:40] production of melany. melanin is the
[00:07:44] pigment that gives our skin its color, and so when
[00:07:48] that gene is not working the way it's meant to, it's
[00:07:52] unable to code to produce adequate melanin. there's
[00:07:55] a spectrum of albinism disorders,
[00:07:59] it's called oculocutinous albinism scientifically
[00:08:03] because it affects the eyes and the skin, of course as well as the
[00:08:07] hair, cancer comes as result of
[00:08:11] long-term sun exposure. without some protection, what
[00:08:14] usually starts first is sunburns, so you see that people within tend to
[00:08:18] get very redish when they are under the sun and they can become
[00:08:22] red and they can have blisters on the skin called
[00:08:25] sunburn, and then after some time they may develop
[00:08:28] freckles, freckles are the dark spots, but we call
[00:08:32] lentigens, then with continuous exposure without
[00:08:36] protection, they can develop scaly dry patches on the
[00:08:39] skin, and this is the precursor to skin
[00:08:42] cancer, despite these
[00:08:46] challenges, there is hope, with proper care and early
[00:08:49] intervention, skin damage can be prevented or
[00:08:53] managed. cryotherapy is one way in which we destroy the
[00:08:57] damaged skin, so it's a control destruction the skin
[00:09:01] that uses cryotherapy, which is frozen liquid
[00:09:05] nitrogen gas and the gas is sprayed
[00:09:08] onto the skin lesions and it freezes them.
[00:09:12] causing them to die as result of freezing. It's as painful as
[00:09:16] if you put your hand in, if you use your hand to hold ice block,
[00:09:20] you know how it feels. It's cold, and if you hold it
[00:09:23] for few seconds, you feel the burn. It's not
[00:09:27] a burn, but it's a freeze burn. Dr. Cole also
[00:09:31] addresses the many misconceptions surrounding
[00:09:34] albinism while emphasizing how individuals
[00:09:37] can effectively manage their condition and leave
[00:09:41] healthy lives. we hear things like

[00:10:33] condescending kids, stressing the need for stricter
[00:10:36] laws and greater societal awareness,

[00:10:44] how offensive it is to make people with

[00:11:14] fines, imprisonment or both depending on the nature

[00:12:28] midst the children, i feel joy,

[00:12:41] albinism, the weight of societal
[00:12:44] judgment and the heartbreak of failed
[00:12:48] relationships go to that clas, all of it just

[00:12:56] think we can move on, i don't
[00:12:58] think, but i feel pin,
[00:13:02] i feel down, i cry and
[00:13:06] cry, they are trying to take an advantage, so we
[00:13:10] say come to my house, i want to see you
[00:13:14] this and that, blah blah blah blah blah, and i will tell you no, for
[00:13:17] mrs blessing, giving omolara a
[00:13:21] chance almost did not happen, so immediately i saw
[00:13:25] i was like sorry there's no space again somebody else is
[00:13:27] here
[00:13:33] of so her the dad was like i know why you say there's no bacon color
[00:13:34] because i say yes that
[00:13:37] i don't think i will be able to work with her one the children will be
[00:13:41] scared parents will complain and the dad was
[00:13:45] like okay don't pay her just let her walk with you
[00:13:49] for a month and see if i can cook if i can't cook
[00:13:53] let her come back home began as a one-month
[00:13:56] trial has now grown into nine years of
[00:14:00] unwaving dedication, commitment and impact in the
[00:14:04] lives of many students. i went to the
[00:14:07] streets to find out if truly people without
[00:14:11] albinism are comfortable marrying those with the
[00:14:14] condition. in this one life that have come, i can't take
[00:14:18] that chance to, i can't marry, you said
[00:14:22] marry right? no, i can't, it's habil. but I'm not sure of getting
[00:14:26] married to someone like that, if God says yes, why I say
[00:14:29] no, in lagos state, however, people with
[00:14:33] albinism have a large community where they unborden their
[00:14:37] challenges and make meaningful relationships under the
[00:14:41] Albinism Association of Nigeria. The
[00:14:45] meetings are held twice every month with about
[00:14:48] 150 members in attendance. At every
[00:14:52] meeting, new members are warmly. welcomed and
[00:14:56] informed about the opportunities available to
[00:14:59] them. Mr. Tolani
[00:15:02] ojuri, the lager state chairman the Albinism
[00:15:05] Association of Nigeria says the level of
[00:15:09] awareness is still very low. The challenges we
[00:15:12] still have is um for children, we still have the issue of
[00:15:16] bullying, we still have the myth going on um
[00:15:20] um with people and
[00:15:24] um you see. have a person, mean look at person with
[00:15:27] albinism as someone who is different, who are not capable,
[00:15:31] who are not up to the task, or if i employ this person with albinism
[00:15:35] can he or she deliver and and the way we are trying to
[00:15:39] um address that is for our members, we are giving
[00:15:43] them all we can to equip them, for our children we make sure
[00:15:47] that you know what, you won't drop out of school, whatever you need
[00:15:51] to stay in school, whatever you need to go through the school system, he
[00:15:55] adds that societal stigma is on the rise
[00:15:59] and they are seeking more government support, for
[00:16:02] Elizabeth, an educationist living with albinism,
[00:16:06] one child would remember still stands out,
[00:16:10] different names that I can't even, I wouldn't want to say teachers would
[00:16:14] call me those names rather than call me Elizabeth, and then there was this man,
[00:16:18] Mr. Solomon who was my class teacher at the time, I think then I was in,
[00:16:22] I was about 10, 10 year old, yeah, and Mr. Sulaimon
[00:16:25] would come into the classroom, engage with other students and
[00:16:29] never involved me anything that they did in class, whether or not I
[00:16:33] knew the answers to questions, Mr. Solomon would never call on me.
[00:16:37] to respond, but not every experience of fault in the
[00:16:41] classroom, for some the struggle continues in
[00:16:45] relationships and personal safety,
[00:16:48] ekena is one of such
[00:16:50] persons, i have this
[00:16:53] coun with some
[00:16:57] individuals that ignorant about
[00:17:00] us, they saw me, i came to a place and
[00:17:04] they like ,
[00:17:08] saying some funny words saying that this
[00:17:11] person will go for money, they were saying the local toilet, you
[00:17:15] could relate, this person could be used for
[00:17:19] money, to make enough money, this that can be used for
[00:17:23] spiritual fortification and all the
[00:17:26] rest, so uh, because
[00:17:29] i some people that you don't was your time trying
[00:17:33] to explain things to them because they already so deep ignorant.
[00:17:37] so i just - just smile and walk away, but the communal
[00:17:41] love the share superceeds these challenges.
[00:17:45] people with albinism have normal functioning immune systems.
[00:17:49] what's the challenge is is sun exposure,
[00:17:53] so you must avoid the sun during the peak hours the
[00:17:57] day, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
[00:18:00] daily. people with albinism should look for jobs in
[00:18:04] which they are indoors more than their outdoors. their job should not
[00:18:08] take them like a street hawker or
[00:18:12] field worker, it's those jobs are not
[00:18:15] appropriate for people withounism because it's just going to
[00:18:19] end up leading to them developing skin cancer from very early
[00:18:22] age, so indoor work, in schools they
[00:18:26] should teachers and parents should encourage children with
[00:18:30] albinism to have different uniforms, their uniform must be long
[00:18:34] sleeve, even if the uniform is short for the school, their own uniform
[00:18:37] should be trousers and long sleeved shirts to cover their skin
[00:18:41] from direct sun exposure and in most um schools we
[00:18:45] encourage children with albinism to have heart as part their school
[00:18:49] uniform wide brim heart so that they are
[00:18:53] protected from the sun. regular use of sunscreen
[00:18:57] is also important so sunscreen will protect children with alvinism and
[00:19:01] people with albsm from uv rais from the sun, but sunscreen
[00:19:04] alone is not sufficient so that's where the cloth. comes
