[00:13:17] confluence a center, the Uguta Lake, located in
[00:13:21] imu state, Ukuta Lake reached its air day in the... late
[00:13:25] 19th century when it became major inland base for the palm
[00:13:29] oil trade during the Nigerian civil war from
[00:13:32] 1967 to 1970 the lake was also used
[00:13:36] as an inland marine and naval base by the beafran
[00:13:39] forces as the largest natural lake in the eastern
[00:13:43] hotland ukuta once featured notable 18-ho golf
[00:13:47] course that attracted government officials and exporat
[00:13:50] but over time its prominence faded and it was
[00:13:54] thriving. destination slipped from the spotlight along with
[00:13:58] its biggest catfish, where the the story all

[00:15:47] leaving memory the people once depended its
[00:15:51] waters, and it is these critical reflection
[00:15:55] that point to where we begin the story of Uguta
[00:15:58] lake.

[00:16:50] the civil war and directly after the civil war,
[00:16:54] if if the if the government decide that they have
[00:16:57] to develop the place and make it more attractive, I
[00:17:01] think you would be better thing for the nation, because Ubuta Lake is a
[00:17:04] special place, it's a special place.
[00:17:08] for for the states and for the country, the lake is very good
[00:17:12] lake, we normally swim there, we do all sort of
[00:17:16] thing there, so it's a very nice lake

[00:17:27] young girls, young boys are wearing things, but normally before you
[00:17:31] cannot wear it, two generations,

[00:18:10] surreal. Beneath the serenity of
[00:18:14] stories of love and betrayal of prosperity and
[00:18:17] abandonment edged into the relics scattered along the
[00:18:21] banks. Science explains fluid

[00:18:32] don't meet. For ugata people, this phenomenon
[00:18:36] has found a place. in their beliefs and traditions visibly

[00:19:36] known admired but often
[00:19:39] overlooked. the UNESCO World
[00:19:42] Heritage list was established in 1972, to
[00:19:46] identify and protect cultural and natural heritage
[00:19:50] sites considered to have outstanding universal
[00:19:53] value. Sadly,
[00:19:57] Nigeria has two sites currently inscribed on the world
[00:20:01] heritage list or several other side remain
[00:20:05] outside that international Mister for Ukuta
[00:20:08] attempt to unlock its tourism potential are not
[00:20:12] entirely new. Help had come during the
[00:20:16] administration of President Goodlock Jonathan, plans were
[00:20:19] announced to develop water transport infrastructure
[00:20:23] around the lake, including the construction of
[00:20:26] jeties, but like many development plans before and after
[00:20:30] it,

[00:20:39] beginning to lose its grip on the lake, another story

[00:20:51] the natives fishing around the Ubuta Lake

[00:20:57] fishing and that made it very very very very
[00:21:01] difficult for us to admire
[00:21:04] the place the way
[00:21:05] it used to be they have sent those hours people away what were they doing
[00:21:09] before they are using chemical with this their
[00:21:12] next they use it to kill even small small fish
[00:21:16] thereself and our people don't like us because the liver don't like such.
[00:21:21] with the current administration stener approaching its
[00:21:24] end, what happens next for Oguta
[00:21:27] Lake? the governor of imo state, distinguish
[00:21:31] senator has designed for this
[00:21:34] place, the the the the
[00:21:38] the the navy already have stationed
[00:21:42] here to protect this uh, this
[00:21:45] environment, so this place has been designed for a
[00:21:49] warclass. resort, the whole world will empty here to come
[00:21:53] and witness, so everything has been planned,
[00:21:56] the the security, we have the
[00:21:59] smart security and um and
[00:22:03] intelligence facilities already on ground, and
[00:22:07] every other thing is uh,
[00:22:10] is being planned for wonderful results, it's
[00:22:14] just quiet, which means that golden years we've experienced
[00:22:18] here based to the lens the community. people based on what they've told
[00:22:21] me, how do you think we can begin to retain this goldience? mean, from the insight you've given
[00:22:25] now, do you think this plan will work and attract you know investors from all
[00:22:29] over the world back here and put it back on the global map? why
[00:22:33] not? those people who are destroying the
[00:22:36] the the all the the fish and
[00:22:40] the natural resource around and doing all sorts of
[00:22:43] nonsense, all those things has has been put to a
[00:22:47] stock. that navy station will ensure that
[00:22:51] those who come back here to experience this breath taking view are taking
[00:22:55] care of and they are safe when this place gain back that
[00:22:58] prominence. a state where
[00:23:01] agriculture remains central to the economy, water
[00:23:05] is more than scenery. it is means of livelihood,
[00:23:09] transportation and survival. from fusion
[00:23:12] expeditions that provide food and income to bontos
[00:23:16] current people, motorcycles and vehicles across.
[00:23:20] water, the lake has long been part the community's daily
[00:23:24] rhythm. what
[00:23:28] about the shores where the journey began? it has been a fantastic
[00:23:31] journey so far, all through the journey and we got to the point the confluence
[00:23:35] where the two rivers met and we are able to see the colors the
[00:23:39] orashi and the ogbuide river coming together, which make this place such
[00:23:43] a unique and one the proudest heritage of nigerian
[00:23:46] tourism.

[00:24:08] fear, when you are a Christian you know there's this
[00:24:12] power and the negative power, but you that
[00:24:15] you are, you need to believe that this river
[00:24:19] is. because this river is what blesses
[00:24:23] everybody, you know

[00:24:28] powers, so this is the another power
[00:24:32] that our people believing. today fishermen
[00:24:36] who still ply their trade here tell different story,
[00:24:40] their carches are smaller, their earnings have fallen and the
[00:24:44] lake that want sustained generations is becoming
[00:24:47] harder to depend on. the fisherman they are
[00:24:51] complaining bly because government
[00:24:53] is not supporting them by their boats and nets, some them do
[00:24:57] has life jackets, they need government help to give them life jackets and to help them in
[00:25:01] their fishing material along the far end
[00:25:05] the shore line the day's car just spread out, fresh
[00:25:09] fish, dried fish, different shapes, different
[00:25:12] sizes, hello baby, hi, each
[00:25:16] one telling is small part the economy that still.
