This is the program where we [00:01:00] bring you insightful information about NAFDAX's [00:01:03] activities aimed at safegarding the health [00:01:05] of the nation. My name is [00:01:08] opejami. On today's episode of [00:01:11] NAFDAC and your health, we will [00:01:14] of present an [00:01:15] of overview [00:01:15] of the achievements of NAFdak across all sectors [00:01:19] within the scope of its regulatory [00:01:21] a perview. [00:01:22] of We will be starting off with the impact [00:01:24] of the 5 plus5 policy and the successes recorded in [00:01:28] all areas of dark regulatory [00:01:31] activities. [00:01:36] One [00:01:36] of the various policies of Nafdak under the leadership of Professor [00:01:40] Mojisola Adeyeye is a 5 plus5 [00:01:44] policy that has significantly enhanced increase in [00:01:48] local pharmaceutical production and the stakeholders in the [00:01:52] industry have continued to commend [00:01:54] professor for the initiative. [00:01:58] Ackulates were once again. reigned on the Navdak DG for [00:02:02] this development at the eighth edition [00:02:04] of the Nigerian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Expo that took place [00:02:08] in Lagas recently. Speaking at the conference, the [00:02:12] Minister of State for Health, Federal Ministry of Health and Social [00:02:16] of Welfare, Dr. [00:02:17] in Isaak Salako, loaded the development that has occurred in [00:02:21] the [00:02:21] of local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, commending [00:02:25] professor Mujisola Adeyeyi for the [00:02:28] initiative. first let me confirm [00:02:31] that my presence here today is not only to [00:02:35] endorse, it's also [00:02:37] of to come out and appreciate what PG man is [00:02:40] doing, [00:02:44] as [00:02:45] of we know, without [00:02:47] production [00:02:49] no country can really move forward, [00:02:53] and so for us in the health sector, the [00:02:57] manufacturing arm in the health sector, is very, [00:03:01] very [00:03:02] of important, of whatever reform that we do [00:03:06] without this very important group of [00:03:10] of players, we cannot make any progress [00:03:13] and of course [00:03:15] of over the last three and half four years this [00:03:18] particular group has killed in very, very [00:03:22] frontally to the reform agenda of [00:03:24] presidentubu and you had it yourself being [00:03:28] of realed out how have moved from about [00:03:32] of 70/30 to almost 50/50 in terms [00:03:36] of export and import or pharmaceutical products into [00:03:39] Nigeria, how the [00:03:43] pharmaceutical industry base has grown from about [00:03:46] 180 in 2023 to over [00:03:49] 200 in 2026, and [00:03:53] how Nafdak has been consistent in [00:03:57] maintaining our recognition. and [00:04:00] evaluation by WHO and how we are moving in that trajectory [00:04:04] to our maturity level f. speaking earlier, the [00:04:08] Navdak director general, professor Mujisola Adeyeyi [00:04:12] explained the strategies adopted by her administration [00:04:16] in NAFDAQ to activate the idol capacity [00:04:20] of the local pharmaceutical manufacturing [00:04:22] industry. We did a [00:04:25] survey, I believe 2018, late [00:04:29] 2018. and we found out that most [00:04:32] of the or the top 20 let's [00:04:35] say imported products are [00:04:37] also the top 20 products that are [00:04:42] a manufactured locally, [00:04:44] of at that point the idol capacity of [00:04:48] many [00:04:50] of manufacturers was about 50 to [00:04:54] 60%, meaning time when they don't use [00:04:57] the equipment this was before the [00:05:00] pandemic, another [00:05:04] story that I'm going to tell is uh in [00:05:08] 2020 or late 2019 [00:05:11] just... before the pandemic [00:05:15] or at the beginning the pandemic, [00:05:19] everybody was calling navd for [00:05:22] vaccines, when are we going to get [00:05:25] vaccines? it [00:05:27] was a it was lot of [00:05:30] pressure. i also remember as member [00:05:34] of international coalition of medicine regulatory [00:05:37] agencies (ICMR), [00:05:41] we are meeting every... week or every two weeks [00:05:43] and all regulatory agencies across the world will [00:05:47] say, oh, not not all, many, we say, we have gotten our [00:05:51] own vaccines, or we just got our vaccines, [00:05:55] many these are from advanced countries, and [00:05:59] they will say, moji, when are you going to get your [00:06:01] vaccines? it was a [00:06:04] shame, i have, i had no [00:06:06] answer, our [00:06:08] manufacturers were... [00:06:14] not just for vaccines, but for all [00:06:17] medicines, so that will be the second [00:06:21] story, the third [00:06:24] story is what we started [00:06:28] in 2019, [00:06:31] 5 + 5, as result the [00:06:35] question, why are we importing what we can [00:06:39] make? we started 5 plus 5. but nobody [00:06:43] heard of us [00:06:46] outside the regulatory and the manufacturing [00:06:50] industry until [00:06:52] presidentubu came up, the [00:06:56] gains that we have attained from [00:07:00] regulatory and industry were not [00:07:03] brought to the [00:07:04] surface. I [00:07:07] remember many [00:07:10] fora. in terms of [00:07:13] how stretched our manufacturers have [00:07:16] been, because the only thing they can, they don't [00:07:20] import is water, and even that water has to be [00:07:24] treated very [00:07:26] well, our [00:07:29] manufacturers are patriots, [00:07:32] nigerian farmer manufacturers are [00:07:35] patriots, because they could [00:07:38] easily, they could easily have given up. [00:07:43] and i was going around, let us give [00:07:46] in, we don't make [00:07:48] anything, let us give these [00:07:51] manufacturers a [00:07:53] break, [00:07:56] until presidentubu came [00:07:59] up with the executive [00:08:02] order of [00:08:04] 2024, but it's not that [00:08:08] straight forward, we have two [00:08:11] ministers. the senior minister, professor alipate [00:08:14] and the minister of state that also bought [00:08:18] into this rational that we [00:08:22] need to give incentives. that is why the [00:08:25] presidential initiative for unlocking value change came [00:08:29] up. the chairman of pharmaceutical [00:08:33] manufacturers group and manufacturers association [00:08:36] of Nigeria, PMG Man, who was also the [00:08:40] host the conference in his welcome address spoke [00:08:44] about the mission the expo and how it has [00:08:47] evolved over the years. i'm particularly [00:08:51] proud for the progress we're making. [00:08:54] today our membership comprises of over 200 [00:08:58] farmer and life science manufacturing companies [00:09:01] working every day to close the gap for quality, [00:09:05] safe and affordable medicines and health products in Nigeria [00:09:09] and across Africa. indeed, were [00:09:13] transiting. [00:09:15] NAFDAX [00:09:18] indicates that 37 37 [00:09:21] manufacturing facilities are currently undergoing [00:09:25] retrofilling and constructing upgrade to meet [00:09:28] international current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) [00:09:32] standard. At the same time, the [00:09:36] ratio of imports to local manufacturing life [00:09:40] saving products has moved significantly. [00:09:42] towards the [00:09:46] decader 50/50 compared to the much [00:09:50] wider import dependency recorded in previous. These are [00:09:54] important indications, or these are important [00:09:57] indicator to industry that is building capacity and moving [00:10:01] towards greater self-sufficience. We commend the [00:10:05] federal government of Nigeria for its strong [00:10:09] trust policy towards localization strengthening. of domestic [00:10:13] manufacturing through the presidential initiative for [00:10:16] unlocking the value chain in healthcare (pvak) [00:10:20] and the presidential executive order on [00:10:23] pharmaceutical and on farmer [00:10:26] industrialization acknowledge the leadership of his [00:10:30] excellency [00:10:30] the president [00:10:35] gcfr. the PMG man chairman specifically [00:10:38] expressed his appreciation to the Navdach DG for [00:10:42] initiating 5 plus five. our [00:10:46] appreciation goes to the director general of Navdach, [00:10:49] professor Mujisola Christiana, please a [00:10:53] round of applause for. for [00:10:57] a steadfastness, a steadfastness towards ensuring that the [00:11:01] industry move in the direction of international best [00:11:04] practice in quality and CGMP [00:11:07] compliance. the 5+5 policies and [00:11:11] the ceiling list are regulator regulatory [00:11:14] drives that has helped to create opportunities for local [00:11:18] production of essential and contracting [00:11:22] manufacturing while reducing [00:11:25] dependency on imports, these [00:11:28] policies have bring are bringing to are beginning to [00:11:32] change the ecosystem, the gains must be [00:11:35] sustained. also speaking, the representative the [00:11:39] director general the manufacturers association of Nigeria, [00:11:43] Mrs. [00:11:45] Odimoko, also praised the NAFDAX for initiating the [00:11:49] 5+5 policy. Nigeria is well [00:11:52] positioned to engage as a leading. pharmaceutical [00:11:55] manufacturing help in Africa. If we continue to [00:11:59] strengthen local capacity, investments and [00:12:03] regional value chains. The time has come [00:12:07] when we should look inwards, and I thank the DG Navdach [00:12:11] for letting us know the metrics regarding 50 [00:12:15] plus 50. The time has come that we should look [00:12:18] inwards to available abundant resources that [00:12:22] nature has endowed with us more. Importantly our [00:12:26] plants and mineral resources for the synthesis of our [00:12:29] home-grown pharmaceuticals, hence [00:12:33] research and development remain imperative if we [00:12:37] must localize. Amongst oder in [00:12:39] Neblas, public private partnership is [00:12:43] key. Academia, I believe, have started [00:12:46] aligning its research to industrial needs in [00:12:50] line with Nigeria, made in Nigeria active [00:12:53] pharmaceutical. ingredients, government agencies [00:12:57] here, especially, our [00:12:59] own navdak, should be ready to give every support [00:13:03] needed to make this a [00:13:05] reality. [00:13:10] you've been watching nafdak in your health. we'll take a [00:13:14] short break now. please stay tuned. let's [00:13:18] say note under rate consumption of alcohol. in [00:13:22] Nigeria today, many young people are: getting access to [00:13:25] alcohol easily, especially alcohol sowed in saches and [00:13:29] small bottles. this is caused monumental damage to the lives of many [00:13:33] young people. concentration of alcohol in saches is about [00:13:37] 43% and [00:13:38] it is easily accessible to children because sashi alcohol [00:13:42] and the packages and small pet bottles less than 200 millimeters [00:13:46] makes alcohol cheap, affordable and accessible to [00:13:49] children. they can easily conceal it, underage drinking can [00:13:53] damage the brain a learning and leads to poor [00:13:56] decisions, it can also harm the body, damaging the liver and [00:14:00] kidnes, raising blood pressure, effecting hormones and [00:14:04] increasing the risk of cancer later in life, it can even cause [00:14:08] depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and addiction, [00:14:12] children's physiological makeup is not matured to handle [00:14:15] alcohol, children are not small adult, sof also [00:14:19] showed that 54% of minors and underage purchase [00:14:23] alcohol by themselves. alcohol should not be accessible [00:14:27] for undereraged, let's say no to undererage consumption [00:14:31] of alcohol, parents, teachers, religious leaders, [00:14:35] communities at large, let's say no to undererad [00:14:39] drinking of alcohol. this message is from naftac [00:14:42] and the national orientation [00:14:44] agency.
