[00:00:22] On this week's hot list, financial fright, the currency is weaker [00:00:26] than ever, investors are running from the stock market. What is impact on the [00:00:30] ground, three [00:00:32] of meal mess, the boss [00:00:36] of of the president's flagship school lunch program is fired, then arrested, how to save a good idea, [00:00:39] and travel dreams, why Indonesians are among the world's [00:00:43] least likely to [00:00:44] of travel [00:00:45] abroad? [00:01:25] topic number one: financial fright. Confidence in [00:01:28] Indonesia's currency is. down way down [00:01:31] the rupea fell to its weakest level ever at more than [00:01:34] 18,00 to the dollar, stocks hit the year's lowest point [00:01:37] this month as the world's worst performing market down [00:01:41] nearly 40% in 5 [00:01:43] of months. the global reason [00:01:45] of [00:01:45] of why is the war in Iran of course with shipping lanes closed and [00:01:49] resources shifted, but you know guys, let's talk about the domestic [00:01:52] issues, close to home and the impact on everyday life. first, [00:01:56] you no, analysts say that this isn't a catastrophic. crash like [00:02:00] in 98 because now systems are [00:02:02] of stronger and reserves remain in place, but trust, trust [00:02:06] is damaged, trust in leaders, trust in recent government actions to [00:02:10] you first, for you, what's hurt confidence the [00:02:14] most? well, it's very interesting right, because our [00:02:18] inflation is actually under control, all these indicators right, [00:02:21] inflation, and then uh the growth is actually quite good as well, [00:02:25] 5.6% [00:02:27] in compares to other countries uh, but the... real problem i [00:02:31] think is [00:02:31] of the uncertainty when it comes to policy policy, so [00:02:35] of markets can tolerate bad news, but what they cannot tolerate is [00:02:39] uncertainty, and that goes back to leadership and [00:02:41] of government, yes exactly, and so i think what they're questioning is [00:02:45] this [00:02:47] um the fiscal fiscal integrity of Indonesia, so they seeing you [00:02:51] know governments keeps changing the policies, governments keep coming up with all these [00:02:55] new projects and all these [00:02:57] you know great big. programs that will [00:03:00] need lots of [00:03:01] of money to talk about that in [00:03:02] the next segment, i know what you're referring to, yenny, but not only [00:03:06] that, that [00:03:07] i'm being funny, well [00:03:08] you know the the impact as as we want to discuss in this segment has already [00:03:12] begun, some capital projects are being put on the shelf, some postponed [00:03:16] families, heard are quietly moving their money overseas, [00:03:19] prices on imported goods are beginning to creep up, william, what are [00:03:23] you seeing and does it really [00:03:25] of affect the average Indonesia who's maybe driving taxi or selling food on the [00:03:29] street? No, in general, I talked to lot [00:03:32] of food and beverage operator, [00:03:36] the the revenue is going down, could [00:03:40] be people more reserve on the [00:03:43] funding, it don't just spend, they don't [00:03:46] of go out and eat anymore that much, they eat, but they don't p spend lot of money [00:03:50] for the food, because the dollars increase, lot of [00:03:54] imported ingredients increase [00:03:57] tremendously, yeah, but just came back from [00:04:01] uh travel from from central jawa to [00:04:05] to uh west kalimantan and west [00:04:09] sum west sumatra which is padang [00:04:12] i went always went to the see the market the [00:04:16] market [00:04:17] of still [00:04:17] in a glance still busy except when they took a few [00:04:21] people they said the revenue is is uh [00:04:25] going down that's a fact of reality [00:04:29] but Indonesia is [00:04:31] i think is survival and base you don't [00:04:35] eat all the [00:04:38] of luxury ingredients and as as you know the [00:04:41] basically [00:04:42] of Indonesia in the old time is they grew up with the plant [00:04:45] of base lot of very local [00:04:49] ingredients except tempe may be because [00:04:51] 95% of uh [00:04:55] imported so maybe the you said you saw the markets wet markets dry markets the [00:04:59] they they are still busy, but people are not buying as much or as consuming as [00:05:03] much, but if I look at the the stock of ingredients still [00:05:07] abundant, you business contracts a larger scale and [00:05:10] business contracts paid in dollars. are being put on hold because obviously [00:05:14] they cost more, you need more rupea, but but if you're coming to Indonesia, [00:05:18] yeah, um, your dollar or your euro are worth lot [00:05:22] more than few months ago, that's a small bright spot, [00:05:26] well it is when it comes, when you look at it from the tourism perspective, [00:05:30] right, uh, of course, chip for Indonesia is great for [00:05:33] for tourists, but then what is the impact for ordinary [00:05:37] Indonesians, they will have to pay [00:05:39] you know higher prices for everything, you know, like imported fuel, [00:05:43] medicines, food ingredients as well as you know like [00:05:46] industry inputs and everything is affected by the rising dollars and [00:05:50] so you Indonesians will have to pay [00:05:54] much much higher prices and and [00:05:58] it is not a small thing, this is people feel it, people feel the the [00:06:02] squeeze, the economic squeeze and they're not happy about it. okay, now analysts say the next few [00:06:06] weeks will be kind of crucial to the financial situation, [00:06:09] financial anxiety, whether [00:06:12] the government will take solid action in restoring investor confidence, [00:06:15] william, you've been through the ups and downs um through the [00:06:19] years, I'm not saying that you're like so old or anything, but how would [00:06:23] you rate this economic situation we are in now as [00:06:27] compared to maybe you know crisis in the past? it's very hard to [00:06:30] predict, I mean is it, I'm not the [00:06:34] economist, no I'm not, but that's the feeling like 98 that was [00:06:37] bad, everybody felt it and we knew it, the region felt it, [00:06:41] it's not that bad. [00:06:43] I don't think we on that when [00:06:46] look level there I I agree still [00:06:46] because some maybe [00:06:50] some little positive optimism [00:06:54] among the Indonesian except too much [00:06:58] the political political issue at the moment your question [00:07:02] earlier but whether this is as bad as 98 I don't think so [00:07:06] because our institutions much stronger now and our banking sectors [00:07:09] especially so much stronger now uh like [00:07:13] you said before, reserve is is much stronger as well, much higher, [00:07:17] my advise is that government needs to be needs to stabilize [00:07:20] the um the fiscal spending, they need [00:07:24] to rain in all the spendings, because if if you don't have the [00:07:28] money you need to borrow, either you need to borrow or you need to rein in your spending, [00:07:32] that's but if you ask the ministers they're complaining that their budgets have been [00:07:35] cut, yeah but that's the other thing right, because if i were him [00:07:39] i would him being the president, him being the president [00:07:43] "I would look at all the programs and see which ones [00:07:46] need more investment in terms of government's procurements, government's investments [00:07:50] right, what industry needs help, needs incentive and [00:07:54] put more money into that. Okay, so reorganiz the budget and [00:07:58] see where we are at this point in time, which we we want to discuss next, because [00:08:02] hot Indo will continue shortly with the free meal [00:08:06] mess, how to save the school lunch [00:08:09] program. [00:12:21] topic number two, free meal mess. the images. [00:12:25] were shocking to some, not surprising to others, the head the country's free [00:12:29] school lunch program was arrested June 3rd for corruption, the day [00:12:32] after he was fired from the president's priority program. this [00:12:36] capped more than year of problems for the well-intentioned effort, among [00:12:40] them thousands of sick kids from hygien issues. new program [00:12:44] leaders pledge to do better. you know, um, we've talked about this [00:12:48] several times, if you watched and and let me go to you first, as [00:12:52] food guy, um, is this noble [00:12:56] project as i believe that just needed a lot better [00:12:59] execution? the intention is [00:13:01] noble, but the my major concern [00:13:05] is about how to handle the food safety, [00:13:09] while the rest is easy as as long as you have [00:13:12] rice, you have protein, you have some fruit, [00:13:16] veggie, it should be, we don't have to generally count in [00:13:19] detail on the on the nutrient, but you have those [00:13:23] factors is ' sihat, lima [00:13:28] apa empat sempura, that's milk, that should be fine, but my major consenty is [00:13:31] the especially to clean the food [00:13:34] container, and that's been the problem with the hygiene [00:13:37] and the way you [00:13:41] cook them as well, the way you cook and the way you [00:13:44] store, right? for instance, just an [00:13:48] example, the [00:13:49] airline, you never [00:13:53] cook and send to the... it has to be blast [00:13:56] chill for 24 to 48 hours really [00:14:00] and portion then send to the plane that is to stop [00:14:04] the bacteria, but if you cook and you hold it [00:14:07] within one hour they definitely [00:14:10] be contaminated [00:14:13] he has experience buse you you handled food program few years [00:14:17] ago can you imagine garuda is one person sick in during the [00:14:21] fly oh be horrible yeah you have to land bad publicity [00:14:26] Yeah, that is from the food side, and and that's why I want to ask you that specifically, [00:14:30] now um, operationally, it was to me, it was rolled out too [00:14:33] fast, serving too many people, I mean tens of millions of kids needed [00:14:37] more planning, but the president we know wanted to make good on his campaign [00:14:41] promise, um, yenny leaders have been replaced, what else now [00:14:45] to get it going right, like William said, I mean this is novel, he's got a [00:14:49] novel intention, but again we need to look at our own capacity, you [00:14:53] know, we this is... such a massive program and [00:14:57] you want to roll it out immediately nationwide program [00:15:01] without a the capacity to back it up [00:15:05] and [00:15:05] you know this is the main problem and I am actually I'm very [00:15:09] glad that the new head the uh MBG you know the the [00:15:13] the [00:15:14] the the freelaunch program actually said that she's going to scale [00:15:17] down the operations and and uh the program and [00:15:21] she's going to focus more on the the poorest areas of Indonesia. [00:15:25] Yeah, yeah, the place where you need more nutrition, exactly, buse why, why do you want [00:15:28] to uh feed all the rich kids in in the big cities for [00:15:32] example, what what happened, what has been happening [00:15:35] is that these kids the... got all these food allowances from their from their [00:15:39] rich parents, they buy their own food or they bring food from home, [00:15:43] so what they what they do is they take the free lunch [00:15:47] and give them to their drivers, to their nanies etc. yeah, that's [00:15:51] happening, so in [00:15:55] instead of spending all this money [00:15:59] on food that will be wasted, we should uh put it [00:16:02] industry that needs incentive, like i said before, industry that needs [00:16:06] incentive that would... create jobs for the parents the [00:16:10] poor kids and then the corruption arose because the huge [00:16:13] scale that they awarded contracts to people setting up kitchens who probably had [00:16:17] no experience and but just because they knew someone and i'm [00:16:21] not tarring everybody with the same brush but it happened there were documented [00:16:25] cases so we need transparency when it comes to the procurements contracts [00:16:29] given out to whom what are they uh what is what what is the output [00:16:32] and and they did reveal some it's it's a very difficult to [00:16:36] control with the the level of [00:16:39] competency of it's a caterer, yeah, they are [00:16:43] not all experienced, there's no standard, national government standard [00:16:47] for food service on this, you can't do it in instantly, yeah, and and [00:16:51] the the scale of it was too many people, and so they already before [00:16:54] this arrest of this the former leader, they they had cut [00:16:58] out the weekends and certain parts the program to scale it down, so the [00:17:02] new leaders are saying we're only going to do less instead of 20 million [00:17:06] we're going to do [00:17:07] tray, the may be five million at first or okay, one last point on the [00:17:11] food, william, is is the is the issue of hygiene and i want [00:17:14] to get this important because parents are really concerned about this, is it a [00:17:18] solvable problem or impossible because the [00:17:21] enormity the lunch is served, because the [00:17:25] numbers, you know, each [00:17:29] catterer has to have cater like a [00:17:31] 500 to 100, at [00:17:34] at the look food tray, they have, to [00:17:37] wash all by hand, there's no automatic [00:17:41] machines like in other countries and i don't know how to to [00:17:45] dry those tray after being washed [00:17:49] clean, the washing detergen are are good, but by [00:17:53] the time they have to stack, are they [00:17:55] all pure totally [00:17:59] dry or there some moisture, but these are basic food [00:18:03] service issues any country, yeah, but but this is that... [00:18:07] that's a level of the operation okay, but this one [00:18:11] is you know some some these [00:18:15] cater just on the on the second or the third tier [00:18:19] the area [00:18:20] some look very dubious you know you look at all the you know [00:18:23] this content is coming up in the social media people reporting [00:18:27] about the the kitchens [00:18:30] conditions no strict standard so they have to [00:18:34] go in and what have a establish a standard? [00:18:37] and to control [00:18:38] that much the inspectors, inspectors like you, if you made a spot [00:18:42] visit to a kitchen, you would be shocked, I bet, yeah, oh yeah, you wouldn't want [00:18:46] to go in there, I think, okay, so [00:18:48] you know there, the last point then is is there needs to be better and more [00:18:52] transparent thing about the money because the taxpayers money, 15 [00:18:55] billion, yeah, 15 billion dollars, and [00:18:59] because the government needs to win back the public, one trillion per day, yes, [00:19:03] one trillion per day, because that's their kids, your kids are getting. [00:19:07] sick and that is not cool and before we go on this, I want to take a minute to talk [00:19:11] about one project that we were talking about before the show, um, William [00:19:15] Wongso now has a product that is on sale in the United [00:19:19] States, I have personally been looking for national [00:19:22] product to to promote as Indonesia's food product [00:19:26] and his product is Randang which is which is [00:19:29] usually beef and it's it's made in [00:19:32] coconut cream with certain spices, it's a unique [00:19:36] thing to Indonesia and... where are they on sale and why did you do this real [00:19:39] quick? look, [00:19:42] Indonesia is too diverse when it we talk about the food [00:19:46] culture, so must pick one to capture the [00:19:50] attention to the world, the complexity, [00:19:54] the pride the rendang, everyone in Indonesia they know [00:19:58] rendang right? yes of course, everybody know, [00:20:02] so if we can produce it just to show one [00:20:05] complexity and they will think, what? [00:20:09] but to produce you cannot export [00:20:12] beef from Indonesia, the only thing that if you [00:20:16] can export that i want to keep the authenticity [00:20:19] is the spice space, the flavor, no, [00:20:23] yeah, the seasoning, and the coconut [00:20:26] cream, you cannot do run down without good coconut [00:20:30] cream, that has to come from Indonesia, but it take [00:20:34] a long process, because us, we are the only... good [00:20:37] product from Indonesia produced in US under the USD [00:20:41] and FDA which [00:20:43] are very thick in talking process and it's [00:20:46] called simple and one packet. costs about [00:20:50] how much $30, you [00:20:52] need to sell it in like whole foods or yeah, [00:20:56] we [00:20:57] we plan my ambitious is to cover 54 [00:21:01] state, okay, good luck on that, best wishes to you sir, [00:21:05] rundang has been nominated, not he's been [00:21:08] elected, yes, whatever, as the best food in the [00:21:12] world, [00:21:12] i remember that, yeah, and now we have a product to promote, okay, [00:21:16] um, more hot indo is ahead, travel dreams why Most [00:21:20] Indonesians by far have never left the [00:21:22] country. [00:22:37] travel dreams: now who doesn't want to head overseas on holiday? [00:22:41] Unfortunately, those desires fall short in many places, pew [00:22:45] research center survey of 24 countries listed those [00:22:48] where most people have... have never traveled abroad, number one [00:22:52] is India with 95% of its population having never left [00:22:56] home, at number two is guess, Indonesia with [00:22:59] 92%, followed by Brazil at [00:23:01] 87%, a little surprising to me, but I think the [00:23:05] number one factor is the huge population base, I mean you you [00:23:09] got more people living outside in the rural areas who can't even afford to go to come to [00:23:13] Jakarta, the percentage who can't afford it [00:23:17] is very low, yeah economic factory. Yeah, absolutely, I think [00:23:21] mainly economic factors can't afford it, cannot afford it, but there are still [00:23:25] people who save to go abroad to do haj and umrah, there you [00:23:29] go, and also go to the Vatican, yeah, how do they religious, [00:23:33] religious pilgrimage, they say for years though, [00:23:35] that's tens, tens of years, yes, [00:23:39] nearly 90% Muslims your life, sometimes nearly their lifetime, almost you [00:23:42] know the entire lifetime, sometimes yeah, at the [00:23:46] end, then you know you got your 70s and you're almost. [00:23:50] and the only place you have gone in your life is middle east because midle [00:23:54] east or actually the vatican oh oh for the christians who [00:23:58] want pilgrimage to and also or yeah [00:24:02] Israel you the survey said other factors include things [00:24:06] like passport access which is is also money factor you got [00:24:10] to pay for a passport and geographic location um you know if you live [00:24:14] far away out the centers is hard to get everywhere you're going but you need [00:24:18] to go to Chakata first. before you travel, oh bi, there's there's a [00:24:22] transit point, so William, does the high percentage of homebound [00:24:26] Indonesians surprise you? not [00:24:30] really, because as as what she said, is is the [00:24:33] economic factors, but the lot their mind, because we have [00:24:37] majority Muslim country, the first their [00:24:41] priority, I think go to Haj, yes, that is considered abroad, [00:24:45] yes, yeah, they don't mind to, they don't think go to New [00:24:48] York, no, go to Makkah, it's a different kind of [00:24:51] pilgrimage, yes, yes, they go to Makkah, they're fine, [00:24:55] except 8% of Indonesians who travel about, that seems [00:24:59] crazily low for someone, well if you compare to [00:25:02] 280 million, it's about 20 million, yeah, [00:25:06] 20 million travelling, that's not a small number, that's a it's actually [00:25:09] increasing compares to like I don't, 10 years ago, middle class is growing, that's [00:25:13] why, and more outbound than inbound, more [00:25:17] going out than people. in yeah, oh okay, and [00:25:21] that's tourism, which is another issue other [00:25:24] sector, one more coming in right at the max, one more point [00:25:28] the 92% in Indonesia who said they never left the country, [00:25:32] the survey said, 27% of that [00:25:35] 92%, got that, said they don't care, they don't care to go [00:25:39] anywhere anyway, so even if they had the opportunity, mean why would they [00:25:42] say that, because some people are just happy to be where they [00:25:46] are, and plus it's [00:25:48] you know the difficulties of traveling, the language [00:25:50] barrier and the language exposure [00:25:54] and food issues food issue also some people will only travel to [00:25:58] places where they can eat halal food yes [00:26:01] so this i think america also in the lot in the center of America [00:26:05] is lot of America, they said they said [00:26:08] 62% American has no passport, I'm not surprised at [00:26:12] that, and that's what adds to their ignorance of [00:26:16] world issues and and and and topics. um, last point on [00:26:20] this, at the other end, just, I don't know where the United States is, but less [00:26:24] than one%, less than one percent in Sweden and the [00:26:28] Netherlands have never traveled abroad, I think it's [00:26:32] also... 99% of everybody in Netherlands and Sweden have traveled [00:26:36] because [00:26:37] I know how many how many sorry 1% travel how come [00:26:41] that low? never traveled anywhere, yes, only [00:26:43] 1%, 99%, because the [00:26:47] border, yeah, you can go by train or by bus your foot over the [00:26:51] line, but the culture is just finished the [00:26:55] holiday, already planned the next holiday, where in Europe, [00:26:59] oh yeah, because they have long holidays. [00:27:03] Yeah, so I'm not surprised, but but uh, yeah, you're right, the number is growing of [00:27:06] people wanting and dreaming about going abroad, it's a good thing, yes, especially among the new [00:27:10] generations, yes, millennials, starting with the millennials, [00:27:14] okay, yeah, it is feedback time now, and still more reactions [00:27:18] to our discussion a former cabinet head on trial for corruption, [00:27:22] thank you yenny for so openly speaking to the world, and lot [00:27:26] of comment on our focus on the new indonesian girl group, Nona, [00:27:29] Audrey posted this on Instagram, the... song, [00:27:33] work is a work of art. Here's how to contact us with [00:27:37] your feedback, email at [00:27:38] hotindo@indonesiachannel.world or comment through our hot [00:27:42] indonesia or Indonesia channel x, facebook, instagram and youtube [00:27:46] pages. final words, yenny: many nicians [00:27:50] complain that what we uh look at, what we read, what [00:27:54] we we see on the news channels, only bad news, bad news everywhere, [00:27:57] corruption cases, blah blah blah, so I'm just [00:29:03] Jakarta State Polytechnic University is considering [00:29:06] expelling a male student for kissing another man on [00:29:10] campus, kissing another man on campus. If there are rules [00:29:14] against such displays for a male and female as well, well, [00:29:18] okay, but if it's simply because it's two men, then it's a [00:29:21] homophobic reaction and not okay. Now, if there are other factors involved, the [00:29:25] public needs to hear it. Otherwise, keep the student in school and [00:29:29] post the general notice about keeping public. [00:29:32] plays
