[00:02:10] sustainability. The summit came a time of growing
[00:02:14] geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, economic
[00:02:18] uncertainty and pressure on global supply
[00:02:20] chains. For two days, leaders discuss how
[00:02:24] bricks can strengthen cooperation among emerging
[00:02:27] economies while pushing for a great. greater role for the global south
[00:02:31] in international decision making. the
[00:02:35] 2026 summit was also significant because
[00:02:38] bricks has now grown far beyond its original four member
[00:02:42] of format. the group has 11 full members including
[00:02:46] Indonesia which joined as a full member in January
[00:02:50] 2025.
[00:03:02] Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the summit in New
[00:03:05] Delhi, welcoming leaders and representatives from across
[00:03:09] Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin
[00:03:13] a America. Russian president Vladimir Putin,
[00:03:17] Chinese President Shin Ping, Indonesian President
[00:03:20] Prabo Subianto, South African President Siril
[00:03:24] Ramafosa and other leaders took part in the
[00:03:27] summit. The meeting was belt against a complex
[00:03:31] international backdrop, ongoing conflicts, rising
[00:03:35] trade tensions and disruptions to energy and supply
[00:03:39] chains. they all have created new challenges for developing
[00:03:42] economies. for India, the 2026
[00:03:46] bricks presidency was an
[00:03:49] of opportunity to place resilience, innovation, cooperation and
[00:03:52] sustainability at the center
[00:03:54] of the group's agenda. the summit also
[00:03:58] marked two decades. Since bricks began as brick, a grouping of
[00:04:02] Brazil, Russia, India and China before South
[00:04:06] Africa joined and the name became
[00:04:08] breaks.
[00:04:21] The expansion of bricks have changed the group's global
[00:04:25] profile.
[00:04:27] of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and United Emirates became
[00:04:31] full members in 2024, followed by Indonesia
[00:04:35] in
[00:04:37] a 2025. The 11 member group now represents nearly half
[00:04:40] of the world's population and around 40% of global
[00:04:44] GDP, according to data cited by Indian
[00:04:47] sources, but a larger bricks also means a
[00:04:51] more
[00:04:52] of diverse one. Members have different economic structures, political
[00:04:56] systems and foreign policy priorities that. makes
[00:05:00] consensus more challenging, but also makes bricks a
[00:05:04] broader platform for developing and emerging
[00:05:07] economies.
[00:05:18] One the central themes the summit was the future of
[00:05:22] global governance. Brick's leaders called for a more
[00:05:26] representative and fairer international order,
[00:05:29] including reform of multilateral
[00:05:31] institutions. The New Delhi
[00:05:35] declaration reaffirmed the group's commitment to
[00:05:38] multilateralism, sovereign equality, international
[00:05:42] law. and greater representation for developing
[00:05:45] countries. geopolitical conflicts also
[00:05:48] loomed large. the declaration express concern
[00:05:52] over escalating international tensions including the risk to
[00:05:56] civilian infrastructure and nuclear safety during armed
[00:06:00] conflicts. the members also sought to address the
[00:06:04] impact of conflict and instability on global
[00:06:07] trade, energy security and economic
[00:06:10] development.
[00:06:19] Economic cooperation remained a key priority:
[00:06:23] bricks members discuss strengthening trade and investment, building a
[00:06:27] more resilient supply chain and deepening financial
[00:06:30] cooperation. The group also continues to explore ways
[00:06:34] to facilitate trade using national currencies and to
[00:06:37] strengthen financial cooperation among member
[00:06:40] states. The broader objective is to make bricks
[00:06:44] cooperation more practical and to create new
[00:06:48] opportunities for business, investment and
[00:06:51] development, but the agenda is no longer
[00:06:55] limited to traditional economics. Technology and
[00:06:58] artificial intelligence have become increasingly important
[00:07:02] parts the bricks
[00:07:03] discussion.
[00:07:18] Under India's chairmanship, bricks also place strong
[00:07:21] emphasis on innovation and sustainable
[00:07:24] development. Leaders discuss cooperation in
[00:07:28] areas including digital technology, artificial
[00:07:31] intelligence, clean energy, food
[00:07:35] security, agriculture and climate
[00:07:37] action. The goal is to link economic growth
[00:07:41] with greater. resilience, particularly for developing
[00:07:45] countries that are vulnerable to climate change, energy
[00:07:48] disruptions and global economic shocks.
[00:07:52] People to people cooperation was also part the
[00:07:55] agenda, including culture, education,
[00:07:59] tourism, health and other areas of social
[00:08:02] development.
[00:08:15] For Indonesia, the New Delhi summit was an important moment
[00:08:19] in its early years as a full bricks
[00:08:21] member. Indonesia's membership provides
[00:08:24] additional platform to engage with major emerging
[00:08:28] economies from different regions. President
[00:08:32] Prabo Subianto's participation also reflected
[00:08:35] Indonesia's engagement with the broader global
[00:08:38] south. Areas such as trade, investment,
[00:08:42] Food security, energy, digital technology
[00:08:46] and development offer potential avenues for
[00:08:49] cooperation. At the same time, Indonesia,
[00:08:53] like other bricks members, operates with its own national
[00:08:57] interest and foreign policy priorities within the group's
[00:09:00] consensus-based
[00:09:01] framework.
[00:09:17] After two days of discussions, bricks leaders adopted the
[00:09:21] new delhi declaration by consensus. The document
[00:09:25] reaffirmed three broad pillars of bricks
[00:09:28] corporation, political and security
[00:09:30] cooperation, economic and financial
[00:09:34] cooperation, and cultural and people
[00:09:37] to people cooperation. The
[00:09:41] declaration also. emphasize sustainable development,
[00:09:45] inclusive growth and the need for a more representative
[00:09:48] multilateral system. for India, the
[00:09:52] declaration was the main political outcome for its 2026
[00:09:56] chairmanship, but the next challenge is
[00:09:59] implementation. the success of bricks will depend
[00:10:03] not only on the number of declaration it adopts, but on
[00:10:07] whether those commitments can be translated into concrete
[00:10:11] corporation.
