00:14:54What do you want?
00:14:57For me, separation is the only solution.
00:15:00The vote on October 19th means the birth of a lot of hope.
00:15:06This is the time where Albertans get to stand up and
00:15:09say we are united, you can't divide and conquer us.
00:15:12This is the time where we have to stick together. Here in
00:15:16Alberta on October 19th, people will vote whether or not
00:15:19they want to pursue the idea of separating from Canada's big
00:15:23question. Now both sides are all in crisscrossing the
00:15:26province trying to sway the vote their way. Now, of course,
00:15:29there's also pressure from the South as President Donald Trump
00:15:33continues to threaten to make Canada his 51st state.
00:15:36So I've come to Alberta to find out what this vote means for
00:15:39the future of Canada.
00:15:42It's the end of the day in Cold Lake, AB.
00:15:46How you doing?
00:15:47Thomas Lukasik is on his final stop. Hello everybody.
00:15:53Maybe we can gather together. Can we gather together?
00:15:56The people here have been waiting to meet him. Thank you
00:15:59everybody for coming out. I, I really appreciate you on a
00:16:03Sunday evening. That, that is something. But you know
00:16:06what? We've been on the road now for
00:16:08I don't know even how many days. Thomas's mission here is simple.
00:16:12He wants people to know their vote is crucial. Finally,
00:16:15we're realizing that we have to show our pride in Canada and,
00:16:19and we have to all as Canadians pull together in unity.
00:16:22And, and that's right, that's right.
00:16:27The stakes are very high. You know,
00:16:30this isn't fun and games. This is,
00:16:32this is very serious business. And,
00:16:34and there are those that are saying Thomas Alberta will
00:16:37never separate from Canada. This is not realistic. I think
00:16:41it is realistic. There is a pathway and Brexit has shown us
00:16:44what the pathway is. When people feel too confident that
00:16:48they are on the winning side, they tend not to vote. Apathy
00:16:51sets in and that's how the other side wins. This is
00:16:54probably the most important work that we will do as
00:16:57Canadians in our life
00:16:59Times and the vote that we will be participating in will define
00:17:03us. Thank you.
00:17:09Thomas vows to visit every single town in the province
00:17:12before the vote on the 19th. Thank you again,
00:17:14thank you for your leadership, Thank you. And yes, I'm a proud,
00:17:18I'm a proud Canadian. You can't be 1 without the other. But not
00:18:01because they believe that's the way to prosperity and people
00:18:05who think a united Canada is the better choice.
00:18:10It's the next day and Thomas Lukasik is on his way to the
00:18:13town of Vegreville
00:18:16and I think we have enough fuel to get there.
00:18:2912 years old
00:18:31and I left Poland at a time where I would not be able to
00:18:35return again to Poland because it was a communist country at
00:18:40that time and we came here as refugees. So every day I'm very
00:18:44thankful to Canadians, to Canada,
00:18:46for the opportunity that Canada has given my family and and
00:18:51myself. This is sort of my journey of of paying off my
00:18:55debt to Canada.
00:18:57Almost went from refugee all the way to become Alberta's
00:19:00deputy premier.
00:19:02An MLA for almost 15 years,
00:19:05and in that time he never thought separation was the way
00:19:08to deal with Ottawa. And he thinks that's even more true
00:19:11today. This is the worst time possible. It makes us
00:19:13vulnerable. Never in the history of the relationship
00:19:33Look around you. You are the future of Alberta. We can do
00:19:37this.
00:19:39The thing is, there are thousands of people
00:19:42across the province coming out in support of separation too.
00:19:45Free and independent Alberta.
00:19:49One of their leaders is Kathy Flett. She's the cofounder of
00:19:52the Alberta Women for Independence Network. I'm
00:19:55absolutely all for Alberta being our own, our own country,
00:19:59our own nation, our own, our own state, our own Republic,
00:20:02whatever word you want to use, but our own entity. Kathy has
00:20:06been pushing for Alberta independence for almost a
00:20:09decade.
00:20:10Her beef, she says, is with Ottawa. We as Albertans
00:20:13don't have, we still don't have a voice,
00:20:16which means we still don't have a choice and what goes on.
00:20:19We're not angry at Canada, we're angry at the government
00:20:23system. It's the government structure that's the problem.
00:20:26Kathy's complaint is the federal government takes
00:20:30Alberta's oil and gas wealth and uses it to help other
00:20:33provinces. And for her, separation would end that and
00:20:36make Alberta richer. What that means pragmatically,
00:20:40I guess on a day today, our paychecks, more of that money will stay in
00:20:44our bank account so that we can look after our families because
00:20:47it's not going to Ottawa. We'll be able to decide what's best
00:20:50for Albertans, not Ottawa deciding what's best
00:20:53for Albertans. Many people say this is the wrong time to be
00:20:56doing this with the United States breathing down our necks.
00:20:59What's your position? This is the perfect time to
00:21:02have this referendum
00:21:04and here's why. Because we are the only province who has a
00:21:08leader who has consistently gone down to the US to try and
00:21:11build up relationship with them. And so we've already got a
00:21:15foundation to build upon, has a belief that's different.
00:21:18Support for separation here is strongest with people who are
00:21:22middle-aged, but there are younger voices too,
00:21:26called freedom, or in this case, 2 Voices. Sisters,
00:21:29what do you want?
00:21:32Let's Go
00:21:35Madison and Macy Holmes host a political podcast. I'm already
00:21:38gutted when I have to ask my 50 year old father to go back to
00:21:41the rigs because my ideas, talents and ability to learn
00:21:44and create isn't enough for me to make a life for myself.
00:21:48If ever there was a ballot in front of me
00:21:51on whether or not to vote Alberta out of Canada,
00:21:53my pencil will be checking yes. This is not a whim decision.
00:21:57We've thought about this really hard and we're because our
00:22:00future is worth thinking about.
00:22:04I picked 00 as the number because we are 0 years
00:22:07independent.
00:22:09Madison and Macy's say they want an independent Alberta
00:22:12because of the economic troubles they see with their
00:22:15generation. Well, it's just the overall quality
00:22:18of life. It's like even if some people are getting by,
00:22:21that's all it is, is getting by. It is not
00:22:24thriving. It's it's not enough. I want more from life and I
00:22:27know that a lot of people do. And since me and our Mattie are
00:22:31going to be inheriting the next generation of whatever Canada
00:22:34is to be, if it continues to go down this
00:22:37path, I don't see any future for me or
00:22:40my generation because so many people are moving back in with
00:22:42their parents, right? They can't afford a first time
00:22:45home. And so if there's any chance that there is a
00:22:48potential for us to have something better,
00:22:50then this is just what this is trying to accomplish. That's
00:22:53what independence is trying to accomplish. Well,
00:22:56to give you what you've all been waiting for,
00:22:58Macy and Madison tell me they'll keep fighting for
00:23:01separation no matter the result of the vote. And that's what
00:23:04many in the movements say.
00:23:09The people who want Alberta to stay in Canada seem to be a
00:23:13significant majority. That's what the latest polls suggest.
00:23:20Thomas arrives in Vegreville. People here are happy to see
00:23:23the Unity bus.
00:23:25They tell me they're relieved to have someone who represents
00:23:29them. Hello,
00:23:31how are you? How are you?
00:23:35Thank you so much. Thank you. OK. That's a camera,
00:23:38by the way. Have you ever seen one?
00:23:42My father fought in World War 2 and died for the very democracy
00:23:45we have and I don't think a lot of people supporting the
00:23:48independence movement. People realize the damage they're
00:23:51doing right now. Love this shirt and you. Do you guys know
00:23:54each other?
00:23:57I came here today to support Canada. I have a firm believer
00:24:01in the our country and the divisions that are being caused
00:24:05by a certain few disgust me. So I'm just at that point where
00:24:08it's time to fight back, and this is what we're here for.
00:24:14Thomas doesn't hang around long.
00:24:17Tony's back in the bus driving to the next town. As long as
00:24:21this bus holds out, I will hold out for sure.
00:24:26I'm fully prepared for having yet another campaign following
00:24:30October 19 if we have to. But I'm an optimist. I I think we
00:24:34will be sending a very strong message that Alberta will not
00:24:38be the weak link in the Confederation that would lead
00:24:42to some kind of a breakup.
00:24:46What kind of future do Albertans want for their
00:24:48province? The upcoming referendum will
00:24:51reveal where voters stand. To learn what the choices mean,
00:24:54stay tuned to CBC News for full coverage. The Alberta
00:24:57referendum October 19th. Make an informed choice.
00:27:06Laku the court 10 months after they heard the case,
00:27:08a decision from Canada's top court experts say should
00:27:12influence all future cases in the country where both the
00:27:16victim and the offender are Indigenous. Trying to address
00:27:20violence against Indigenous women and girls and the over
00:27:24incarceration of Indigenous offenders. At the same time,
00:27:27judges have been explicitly saying I am looking for
00:27:31direction from the Supreme Court. Surveillance video
00:27:35shows
00:27:36Harry Cope beating his longtime on again off again partner
00:27:39Brittany Sack in 2021. Both Cope and Sack are magma. Cope
00:27:53Indigenous background. The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal agreed
00:27:58and reduced Cope sentence by two years. Then Nova Scotia's
00:28:02Public Prosecution Service appealed to Canada's top court,
00:28:06arguing the Criminal Code also requires courts to deter
00:28:10violence against Indigenous women. Parliament intended for
00:29:02of the Criminal Code that didn't require the courts to
00:29:05incorporate Indigenous perspectives.
00:29:08Nova Scotia's Public Prosecution Service says it
00:29:11brought the appeal to Canada's top court to clarify questions
00:29:14of national importance. It respects the decision and will
00:29:18apply it to future cases. Kayla Hounsell, CBC News, Halifax.
00:29:24More than 30 years after police across Ontario hunted a serial
00:29:28child ****** this man is standing trial. Prosecutors say
00:29:32Richard Neal lured victims into wooded areas in southern
00:29:36Ontario parks and tied the children to trees to sexually
00:29:39assault them. About how old at the time did you think that
00:29:43this person was? Now a jury has been shown this
00:29:471995 police video. A young boy describing his attacker as a
00:29:51man in his late 20s and roughly this tall.
00:29:54He took the rope and tied it to my foot and then he tied it up
00:29:57to the root of the tree and then he pulled down my pants,
00:30:00the boy recounted.
00:30:02The now 67 year old accused insists it wasn't him. He is
00:30:07not guilty
00:30:09and certainly the presumption of innocence applies. As more
00:30:13children in the 90s told police of similar assaults.
00:30:17Investigators linked three attacks,
00:30:19one targeting an 8 year old boy in Kitchener,
00:30:22then a 10 year old boy in Brampton and a 15 year old girl
00:30:26in Oakville.
00:30:29At the time, police searched but couldn't
00:30:32identify the one man behind all those assaults. We can't tell
00:30:36you enough about how we have to get this person off the street
00:30:40all these years later. Crown prosecutors told the jury
00:30:43advances in forensic technology finally allowed police to
00:30:47identify Neil. Investigators searched his homes and said his
00:30:51DNA and fingerprints matched samples from the crime scenes.
00:30:55Maybe they'll get a warrant, sample some something
00:30:58specifically
00:31:00from that suspect and they'll compare that directly to the
00:31:03crime scene sample and that it sounds like in that case it
00:31:06resulted in a match. The Crown says it's a trillion times more
