00:05:05bold statement and it's quite easy to deduce where the title is derived from
00:05:09saying that you are the son
00:05:11of the legendary William. able and with title like that,
00:05:14you have left us with no choice than to start with the legacy
00:05:18you hope to continue. what is the single biggest statement you're making
00:05:22with that album and what legacy are you
00:05:24continuing? well um, guess
00:05:28a lot of people know him with his
00:05:31music, so let me just let me just let me start off by
00:05:34saying that i am continuing his musical
00:05:37legacy um, because when he
00:05:41died lot of people. we are like uh, how far, is
00:05:44there nobody from the family is going to continue
00:05:46with this legacy, they love
00:05:49this music, so many people w saying that uh, i remember listening to bbc
00:05:53and heard this couple saying that they got married with William
00:05:56Mayabo's music, so that really touched me and was
00:06:00okay, i think it's high time i continue what he
00:06:04started, because people can
00:06:07now relate to, you know, people are beginning to talk
00:06:11about my father. again because we not doing anything
00:06:15about him and the fact that he stopped doing
00:06:18music, everything started declining like people stopped
00:06:22talking about him and so so when i when i started the whole thing
00:06:26started again now people are talking about him, people are not going back to listen to his songs
00:06:29and the love i'm getting from it is really massive, i thank god for
00:06:33that and you have also created refined version of your
00:06:37father's biggest song, were you worried about touching that song
00:06:41and what kind of reaction? have you gotten? okay,
00:06:44well um, yeah, on the 26th of
00:06:48um of July,
00:06:512026, I released an afro
00:06:54highlight version of one of his hit songs, when you go in the smooth and
00:06:58good, so um,
00:07:01that's just a version, because we i have the intentions of
00:07:05releasing other versions a more than
00:07:08version, you
00:07:09know, um, maybe an piano version or everything. but I'm not
00:07:13going to lie to you, releasing this song was so
00:07:17difficult for me because I was kind of scared, I don't want to spoil what
00:07:21my father did,
00:07:23you know, so I had to contact a lot of
00:07:26people that are musically inclined to ask them, what do you think,
00:07:29what do you think about this song, and they all really liked it, so
00:07:33now that I dropped it, I got a lot of positive reviews from
00:07:37people, they love the five, the message is still there, when you go
00:07:41in smooth and good, you have so... many friends, when comes bad, they all run
00:07:45away, and that's what's going to you today, so uh,
00:07:49people like it, and I hope more people listen to it and share
00:07:52it. so let's talk about the album proper now, you
00:07:55seamlessly blended afro beats with highlight and
00:07:59contemporary R&B across all the 18 tracks, I
00:08:03guess, how would you describe the evolution of your sound from your
00:08:06early singles to this full body of
00:08:09work? okay, um, thank you
00:08:13for this question, it's a combination of everything, so if you check out the album
00:08:17cover, you see my son, my second son, he loves music so
00:08:21much, um, then on the corner you
00:08:24see myself and my
00:08:27father, you see how how how
00:08:31you the level of creativity on on the art artwork, then at
00:08:35the back the album you see my father's face, my
00:08:39face and then my son's face, so That's why the
00:08:43album is titled legacy continua, continua, which means continuous, that's an
00:08:47Italian word, so in this album, it's a
00:08:50combination of me and my
00:08:53father, I'm also trying to show
00:08:57myself for people to understand and know what I can do, but
00:09:01at the same time I'm also trying to let the world know that this thing started
00:09:04from this man, William Mon, so you
00:09:08see children of legends often struggle to step out the giant shadow.
00:09:13um the appearance um was there ever point in making this album where
00:09:17you feel the heavy presence the family name or have you
00:09:20fully really adjusted to the fact that people will always say hey
00:09:24this is william's son
00:09:28yeah i've always felt this pressure but that was in the beginning
00:09:32like um when i started my career
00:09:352020 oh boy you
00:09:39think the like will be big shoot? you have father
00:09:43with that kind of name and you're trying to do
00:09:47something that wouldn't you know um lear
00:09:51the reputation of what he has already done so you are trying to
00:09:55be careful and you get so many critics even your friends
00:09:58trying to make you believe that you're not doing the right thing
00:10:02or you're nothing and everything so it got to point whereby decided
00:10:06to let go to just be myself and forget what anybody
00:10:09saying you initially whenever i want to release a song, i just send
00:10:13to all my friends, let them listen, and everybody has
00:10:17something to say, everybody has something to say, they will say be like,
00:10:21um, it's not good though, but guy, um, um,
00:10:25make you do it like this, make
00:10:26you do it like this, and some them don't even know anything about music, so but
00:10:30the moment i started doing my own things without even asking for their
00:10:33permission and i'll just release whatever i want to release, the same people that
00:10:37criticize you will beat one that song too sweet that
00:10:40song, so everybody would just say whatever they
00:10:44want to say and my um the best
00:10:48people that would let you know how much how good
00:10:52your songs are are strangers people you don't even know real people,
00:10:56they will listen, they will comment, they will save your songs and they
00:11:00will share,
00:11:02so for now and no send, i just did do my own
00:11:05things.

00:11:08i let you go, you spent significant time based in Europe while of course you
00:11:11maintain um your deep roots in Nigeria, how does living between two
00:11:15continents shape the story you're telling in this um album and your
00:11:19songwriting generally?
00:11:22um, i'm gonna say is here, you see, I've been here
00:11:26for more than two
00:11:28decades, um, Italy is
00:11:32really nice country, nice people, yeah,
00:11:36you know, there are so many flaws here as well, it's a black
00:11:39man, I'm not going to like to you,
00:11:41um, I get lot of support from these
00:11:45folks, no,
00:11:47like, I, I really
00:11:51have, I'm trying to write a song to talk about this,
00:11:55because there's something i noticed
00:11:58that our people would
00:12:02prefer to support you when you already big or
00:12:05famous, these white
00:12:08people when they don't know
00:12:11you, they get curious, they want to know you who is this
00:12:14guy, they all be quiet and be listening to
00:12:18you and watch you and then they will go and check you
00:12:22out, but our people... if they don't know
00:12:25you, they don't care, let me let me give you a scenario,
00:12:29like you as an artist comes out to
00:12:33to perform somewhere where nobody knows you, the white people sit down and watch
00:12:37you and cl, because they they admire the
00:12:41fact that you had the courage to come on stage to do whatever you want to do,
00:12:45but when you go to your
00:12:48people, africans,
00:12:52they will be having their own discussions at one corner, they don't even care. if you are there,
00:12:56you will just the they sing or whatever or they talk, they will not care,
00:13:00and that's really really bad. you have all these promoters, they they
00:13:04bring, they bring a lot of um, they bring a lot of
00:13:07nigerian artists to come here to perform, but is very unfortunate
00:13:11that they don't respect the european
00:13:14artist like, they don't send you, okay, they don't give it them about
00:13:18you, and when the promoters done, some of not all, when they don't
00:13:22respect you, how do you expect the artist coming?
00:13:27to respect, they don't respect you, so no matter how talented you are, they
00:13:31don't care, so um, the big
00:13:34artist will come from Nigeria and so on and so
00:13:37forth,
00:13:41um, you might, you might be giving the opportunity to
00:13:44to um open the floor for this big artist and
00:13:48everything, so there are so
00:13:52many, there are some things going on in the industry, I did to... start my own
00:13:55show
00:13:56so last year i started the charles show the
00:14:00iconic hard cafe influence italy and it
00:14:03was wonderful at
00:14:06was there
00:14:08every afro duploma was
00:14:12there dj ob man was crazy like
