00:04:56Joining me now in the studio to shed more light on mental. Health
00:05:00Awareness is a consultant psychiatrist with over
00:05:0410 years of clinical practice in the diagnosis
00:05:07management and treatment of mental health disorders at the
00:05:11federal neuropsychiatry. hospital Yaba Lagus Dr.
00:05:14Yetundela, thank you for joining us, good to see you, thank you very much
00:05:18for having me, thank you, so
00:05:21um, the WHO has described mental
00:05:25health as um a state of
00:05:28wellbeing that enables people to cope with stresses
00:05:32of life, um, realize their abilities, learn
00:05:36well, work well, contribute to their community, and um,
00:05:40at what point will you say and an individual would lose some of
00:05:44this abilities to to carry out this
00:05:48um activities. thank you very much once again for having
00:05:51me. mental health is an essential part of human life and
00:05:55well being. mental health influences how we
00:05:59think, how we feel, how we behave and
00:06:03also how we manage stress and conditions.
00:06:07mental health also influences how we cope with challenges
00:06:10and also how we respond. to every demands
00:06:14of everyday life. now mental health is much
00:06:17broader than stress and
00:06:20depression. it includes emotional
00:06:23stability, it includes psychological
00:06:26resilience, it includes
00:06:29self-esteem and also the ability to cop with change,
00:06:33especially real changes that we see in our everyday life
00:06:36and also the capacity to participate
00:06:39meaningfully in the family. at
00:06:42workplace in every society and also in the
00:06:46community, so I will say that mental health refers
00:06:49to emotional wellbeing, psychological wellbeing and
00:06:53social wellbeing,
00:06:55so it encompasses lot, it encompasses lot, so all of that will
00:06:59come together to say, okay, this person's mental health is
00:07:02optimum or there are challenges, so I was
00:07:05asking at what point will an
00:07:09individual lose this ability to... is it a
00:07:13gradual thing? is it something that can just
00:07:15you know come suddenly? yes, I would say
00:07:19that um mental health for an individual to develop mental
00:07:23health conditions is mainly gradual, though some
00:07:27mental health conditions can also be developed suddenly, so
00:07:31once there is a loss of contact with reality, either
00:07:34through a change in the behavior, a change in how the
00:07:38person think, a change in how the person feel or relates.
00:07:42with others, because relationship is very important when we talk of mental
00:07:46health, once there's a change any aspect of this
00:07:50life
00:07:50and it occurs gradually, it can also occur suddenly, once you
00:07:54have a change any these aspects then such a person is
00:07:58said to have lost um contact with reality,
00:08:02and contact with reality can differ right
00:08:06from person to person, um now let's talk about
00:08:10those things that can trigger. mental health
00:08:13conditions, then we can talk about the different ones
00:08:17that
00:08:17you know are common in our society. All right, triggers
00:08:21for mental health conditions vary from one person to
00:08:24another, it also varies from more mental health condition
00:08:28to another mental health condition. triggers for mental
00:08:32illness include conditions like once there's
00:08:36emotional instability, it can triggers
00:08:40emotional difficulties can trigger. mental health conditions also
00:08:44once there is family conflict or marital
00:08:47conflict can also triggers mental health condition and
00:08:51make an individual to come down with mental health conditions then
00:08:55once there's a loss of job or
00:08:58unemployment can also triggers mental health
00:09:02conditions then we have financial difficulties such as an
00:09:06individual index and all these can triggers
00:09:09mental health conditions then substance use use
00:09:13of substance such as other drugs like alcohol, like
00:09:17cannabis, smoking, tobacco, stimulants, the
00:09:21use of substance can also trigger mental health
00:09:24conditions, then we have um bereavement or loss
00:09:28of significant orders, it can be loss of a
00:09:32parents, love of loss of a spouse, loss of a
00:09:36child, once there is bereevement or loss of any these
00:09:40significant orders, it can trigger, mental health
00:09:43conditions, then we have abuse, it can be physical
00:09:47abuse, emotional abuse, sexual
00:09:51habils, financial habils, all these can also
00:09:54trigger mental health conditions, then once we have
00:09:58a previous history of mental illness can also
00:10:02trigger, based on the environmental factor can trigger
00:10:06mental health conditions, so all these factors is
00:10:10multifactorial, a combination of... factors that can
00:10:13trigger mental health condition and not a single
00:10:17factor and one of
00:10:19it is the standing out is you know financial
00:10:22difficulties. um,
00:10:25if you go from here to here, you find one person or the
00:10:29other, complaining about you, things are not going
00:10:32well, but yes, the some
00:10:36of this triggers that you mentioned is what, for
00:10:40instance, individual a will go through it and will be
00:10:44fine at the end the day and would not come down with any form
00:10:47of um mental health condition,
00:10:51but individual b can go through the same
00:10:55um kind of situation and
00:10:58you know we not be able to put it together, so is there any
00:11:01genetic um issues that can also predispose
00:11:05an individual to that? yes, there's also
00:11:09genetic issues that can predispose an individual to
00:11:13come down with mental health conditions. um, the best way to
00:11:17understand this is through the biological,
00:11:21psychological and social model. biological...
00:11:25models refers to the body, the
00:11:28brain, some inherited characteristics and some
00:11:32physical health, for example, the there's
00:11:36genetic vulnerability, that is, it runs in the
00:11:39family, some mental health conditions runs in the family
00:11:43and that can make any member of that family to come down
00:11:47with mental health condition, for example, mental health conditions like
00:11:51bipolar affective disorder has very high (
00:11:55irritability genetic factor, so an
00:11:58individual that has family member with bipolar
00:12:02affective disorder that runs in the family, any member of
00:12:06that family can also come down with mental health
00:12:10conditions like bipolar affective disorder. so there is genetic
00:12:14vulnerability which are mainly biological factors. we also have
00:12:18psychological factors, not only biological factors.
00:12:21psychological factors relates to events.
00:12:25emotional events that can make an individual to come down
00:12:29with um mental health conditions and it include childhood
00:12:33trauma such as physical abuse,
00:12:36mental abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual
00:12:40abuse, even child neglects can make such a
00:12:44child to come down with mental health condition, it also
00:12:47includes emotional difficulties, emotional distress
00:12:51and include emotional distress
00:12:54all these ological factors can make an individual to come down
00:12:58with mental health condition, there we also have social factors
00:13:01in the social model, social factors like use of
00:13:04substance, poverty, as you mentioned, use of
00:13:07substance can make an individual to come down with mental
00:13:11health condition, then we have poverty or financial
00:13:15difficulties, then we have um other social factors
00:13:19like substance use, poverty, job loss and all these
00:13:23can make an individual to come down with. you mentioned
00:13:26bipolar um is one the mental health
00:13:29conditions um but the WHO mentioned also that
00:13:33anxiety disorder is about the commonest mental health
00:13:37challenge that people face over 400 million people globally are
00:13:41facing that let's talk about anxiety anxiety
00:13:45disorders like other mental health condition just like you rightly
00:13:49said according to the World Health Organization is the most
00:13:53common mental health challenges. that people face.
00:13:56anxiety disorders is very common,
00:14:00especially in our environment and other developing
00:14:04developing environment countries. now anxiety disorder
00:14:07relates to difficulty in
00:14:11having undew fair, excessive worry
00:14:14and so many things that can lead to anxiety disorders
00:14:18and early recognition of this science
00:14:22in individuals that has anxiety disorder is very important. and
00:14:25early intervention is also very important for people that
00:14:29come down with mental health conditions like anxiety disorders
00:14:33early intervention is key um
00:14:36and on du fear
00:14:40um is this something that one can
00:14:42control its own or it must
00:14:46be um there must be an intervention medical intervention for
00:14:50it um environmental factors we
00:14:53determine whether an individual will come down with symptoms of
00:14:57anxiety disorders or not, and some these symptoms for
00:15:01anxiety disorder, as I've mentioned earlier is undu fair,
00:15:05excessive worry, changed or tramos the
00:15:08hand and um so many symptoms that this
00:15:11individual can experience. now on due fair, such
00:15:15an individual that is having such distress or experiencing
00:15:19ondew fair don't have control over undel fair, they
00:15:23just realize that it comes so... and they notice the
00:15:27change in the their behavior, there's change in the way
00:15:31they think, there's change in the way they feel and they
00:15:34change in the way they relates with people, they start. started checking for
00:15:38things, they started be um isolating themselves, they want
00:15:42to be on their own, the fear is everywhere, they are afraid
00:15:46of going out in public, they are afraid in speaking in
00:15:49public, they are afraid of so many things and some these signs you're mentioning,
00:15:53people would just um may not be able to know that oh this particular
00:15:57person is going through some uh you know mental health
00:16:01uh challenge and it just may feel oh it's just like this or
00:16:05it's just like that so it's okay for all of us to also
00:16:09know some of this signs and be able to learn a helping
00:16:13hand in some ways. yes, it's very okay for us
00:16:17to have an idea of all this signs and also
00:16:20once you notice this any change in
00:16:24behavior anyone around you or any change in the way the
00:16:28person feel, any change in the way the person think or even
00:16:31relate or cope with challenges, then
00:16:35such person will need... help: early
00:16:38recognition, as I said, is very important and early
00:16:42intervention is also very important for people with this, let me
00:16:45quickly remind our viewers that you can also join us in this conversation,
00:16:49if you have questions, if you have comments, you can call
00:16:530808
00:16:55054-2233 uh the
00:16:58number uh on on your screen,
00:17:01um, suicide is another
00:17:05common mental health challenge. Let's talk about
00:17:09that, what can prompt, yes you mention
00:17:12um all sorts of
00:17:15you know triggers, how do we recognize that somebody
00:17:19can or maybe suicidal and how do we help such
00:17:23person? Suicide is very common mental
00:17:27health conditions, it refers to an individual killing
00:17:31or making attempts to kill himself or herself.
00:17:34Suicide is very common, especially. in our
00:17:38environment and is a public health concerns now
00:17:41individuals that have the attempts to
00:17:45kill themself or they plan to kill
00:17:49themselves that is suicide we will know because you will
00:17:52notice there will be change in the way the person relates with
00:17:56people there will be change in the way the person feel there will be
00:18:00change in the way the person think and there will be change even in the
00:18:04way the person cope with stress. at
00:18:08work, in the family, stress either at school or
00:18:11even stress in the community. so once we notice all
00:18:15this, then we know that that individual is likely or
00:18:18planning to attempt suicide. for individual that are planning to
00:18:22attempt suicide,
00:18:24it is very important that we recognize them very
00:18:27early and also advise them to seek for
00:18:31intervention or treatment at mental health
00:18:34hospitals, mental health facilities, because is very
00:18:38important for before they eventually
00:18:41complete the action of suicide, very important,
00:18:45so um, stigma is a big issue because part
00:18:49the reasons why some people would not seek help is because they would
00:18:53think, oh once I say I'm feeling this way, this oh,
00:18:57this person has gone you
00:18:58know mad, and they don't want
00:19:02to seek help, so let's talk everyone
00:19:06listening right now uh Mental health is
00:19:09not um what we should use to stigmatize others
00:19:13and the exact places that people can seek
00:19:17help. All right, so mental health is an essential
00:19:21part of our human health and our well being just like we have
00:19:24said and um mental health is very important just like
00:19:28our physical health and our social well-being, our social
00:19:32relationship with people. So for individuals that
00:19:35have conditions mental. health conditions, it is important
00:19:39that they seek for help, and they can seek for help from
00:19:43any the mental health facilities. In our country,
00:19:47Nigeria, there are currently about 10
00:19:50federal government institutions that specialized in
00:19:54taking care of individuals with mental health conditions.
00:19:58Initially we have seven, but this current government is
00:20:01contributing significantly to mental health conditions,
00:20:05and now we have 10. federal government institutions
00:20:09that specialize taking care of individuals with mental health conditions,
00:20:13so for people with mental health conditions, i will encourage them
00:20:17to seek for help early at appropriate place
00:20:21that is where they will have access to mental health
00:20:24services to help to manage their conditions, so they could go
00:20:28to any the neuropsychiatric hospitals, i
00:20:31understand that the turn is an improvement, but for
00:20:35instance if anyone is
00:20:41We could at least go first to a general practitioner
00:20:45to talk to them then you can get referals right?
00:20:49Yes, yes, yes. Okay, we have lot of um general
00:20:52hospitals almost in every state in this country,
00:20:56Nigeria, so individuals that come down with mental health
00:20:59conditions, mental hellness, can go first to
00:21:03their primary health centers around them or any the general
00:21:07hospitals and once they present there, the doctors will
00:21:11definitely refer them to the appropriate federal
00:21:14government institutions that will manage help to manage such
00:21:18condition so for. individuals with mental health conditions, they can
00:21:22present, they can seek for help, for help any the
00:21:26primary health centers around them, in their local government or general
00:21:30hospitals in their states, so these federal governments
00:21:33institutions, as I said, we have 10 currently, though we are
00:21:37supposed to have at least one in every state to catter for
00:21:41all individuals with mental health conditions, and I'm sure government is
00:21:44going to make lot of contributions concerning that. Okay, so
00:21:48while we are at that, Why do we need not to stigmatize
00:21:52people who have mental health conditions? um,
00:21:55stigma and discrimination for people with mental health
00:21:59conditions has been a lot of discussion, long
00:22:03discussion in our environment. It is important
00:22:07that we must not stigmatize these individuals with mental health
00:22:11conditions, and one way the government has help to contribute to
00:22:15this is to release policies that will guide
00:22:19and help these individuals with mental health conditions. the
00:22:22government just released national mental health act in January
00:22:262023 and this policy is include
00:22:30guidelines to help to protect these individuals with
00:22:33mental health conditions and also reduce stigma and
00:22:37discrimination as much as possible. so to the general public
00:22:41is important that we must reduce stigma. you must reduce
00:22:45discrimination, talking having negative thoughts or
00:22:48negative talk about these individuals, because it's not going
00:22:52to help them to seek for help, it will not help them to for
00:22:56early recognition and also seek for help at the appropriate
00:23:00center. thank you so much, thank you indeed for your time today on
00:23:04the program, we've been having a chat with a consultant
00:23:07psychiatrist dr. yetunde animola, thank you, thank
00:23:11you for having me. okay, we take moment now to quickly see what
00:23:15we have for you on our new
00:23:16segment.
00:23:29As part of efforts to expand access to specialized healthcare
00:23:33Nigeria, the federal government has commissioned new oncology and
00:23:37diagnostic center at the Abubakar Taffa Below University, teaching
00:23:41hospital in Bochi State. At
00:23:43the event, the coordinating Minister of Health and social welfare, professor Muhammad
00:23:47Pate, commissioned the facility, country spend
00:23:50significant resources on outbound medical treatment, and as such the
00:23:54government is investing in healthcare infrastructure to improve access to
00:23:58treatment and reduce the number of Nigerians seeking medical care
00:24:01abroad. The center is part of a wider program involving
00:24:0510 diagnostic centers and six oncology centers been developed
00:24:09across Nigeria. One the largest expansion of
00:24:13health infrastructure and equipment and services in the history of this
00:24:17country. This partnership. what we are
00:24:21witnessing with meds is just one
00:24:24aspect of commissioning 10 world class diagnostic
00:24:28centers complementing the six
00:24:32oncology centers that we had planned to
00:24:35build, of course three them have been completed in benin,
00:24:38casina and inugu, three are outstanding
00:24:42which we are working on, beyond that six
00:24:46quatenary hospitals in the pipeline, one in
00:24:50geopolitical zone on the foreign scene, the Democratic
00:24:54Republic of Congo is recording some success in its fight against
00:24:58ebola disease, as some survivors including frontline
00:25:01healthcare workers have walked free from a treatment
00:25:05center in Benny, eastern
00:25:07region. The patients
00:25:11are celebrating the recovery as the country battles deadly
00:25:14outbreak. According to local media, 13
00:25:18ebola patients with discharge from the Benny Treatment
00:25:21Center. Meanwhile, the Red Cross is
00:25:25calling for more international funding to fight Ebola in
00:25:29the DRC and neighboring countries, urging strict
00:25:32prevention measures to stop the virus from spreading across
00:25:36borders. The humanitarian body is working with the Kenyan
00:25:39government to put the necessary measures in place very
00:25:43quickly, after the governments confirmed the first Ebola case involving a
00:25:47Kenyan national who traveled from the DRC. through Uganda to
00:25:51Nairobi, where he later
00:25:53died. Finally, in order
00:25:57to reduce maternal debts globally, the WHO and its
00:26:00partners have launched the new road map. to tackle hypertensive disorders
00:26:04in pregnancy, the condition which affects an estimate of 10 to
00:26:0815% of pregnancies worldwide, contributes to about
00:26:1116% of maternal deaths each year. the road map covering
00:26:152026 to 2035 and beyond focuses on
00:26:19improving access to blood pressure checks, diagnostic tests and
00:26:23essential medicines while strengthening anti-natal and
00:26:27emergency ofsteric care. it also seeks to address
00:26:30gaps in trained health workers. and referal systems,
00:26:34particularly in countries where access to basic maternal health care remains
00:26:38limited. research and innovation are another key part the
00:26:41plan, with more than 140 partners identifying 20
00:26:45priority areas for further study into the prediction,
00:26:49early detection and treatment these conditions. the
00:26:52initiative comes amit concerns over limited investments in
00:26:56medicine specifically developed to prevent or treat
00:27:00pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
00:27:10As we wrap up health matters, remember to take care of your
00:27:14mind, be gentle with yourself and checking on the
00:27:17people you love. Thank you for watching, I am your
00:27:21me, I'll see you next
00:27:23time.
