00:00:00and remove monopoly, yeah, if you check now, we are
00:00:03still talking about monopoly a little bit, because dangote
00:00:07is the only false, that is why the price is still there, so what
00:00:11we are saying, remember
00:00:14that, when they wanted to
00:00:18go, they privatized the refineries to this
00:00:21dangote, if dangote had taken those
00:00:25refineries, six months, they would have said walking, he built new
00:00:29one, from scratch that is ranked as one
00:00:33of the highest in the world for about the years, three
00:00:36years, so you can imagine already existing one, and by
00:00:40that time they were not yet obsolid, yeah, so what
00:00:44article will do from the
00:00:47of one, and he's not going to be like tin,
00:00:50immediately articu is elected, he has about three, four
00:00:53months before
00:00:56of bewarning, he will continue his consultation, of all the
00:01:00oil experts and the oil
00:01:04you know individuals who are knowledgeable in
00:01:08it,
00:01:09of before he brought out this his plan, he
00:01:12of consulted, he said it from the
00:01:15of one, oil experts
00:01:17of article, he's not the tiru that will come on the first day of
00:01:21inauguration before even consulting his
00:01:24of wife, first subsidy is gone, no it's
00:01:27of they just saw him in, everybody saw him with the wife, now as president he
00:01:31did not,
00:01:33they
00:01:35just is gone, no meeting with the wife, not in the other room,
00:01:39the first
00:01:40dayration to
00:01:44is him, the closest so
00:01:47of person not even
00:01:48of consult, now i'm saying they just
00:01:50saw him as president, yes okay, now
00:01:54immediately wins, he has the f
00:01:56months, he will
00:01:59me use it again to consults the oil experts
00:02:01and the persons to know how
00:02:05from day one the refineries will start
00:02:08operating so of course article they are privatized before
00:02:12if that is what it will need they will privatize they did
00:02:16it before no you are saying the article we meet with the oil and
00:02:19oil i was said he would continue
00:02:23consulting with oils and
00:02:27because this government no he's doing it now I said you will
00:02:30continue, immediately your president elect
00:02:33in okay, is
00:02:34a different, oh that's what I mean, oh okay, you now know you're going to
00:02:37assume office, so you continue the conv
00:02:40of okay, now you start reducing it to
00:02:44of decisions and
00:02:45of orders, now it is campaign programs and
00:02:48manifesto, but immediately you
00:02:50of elected, you have about three four months, yeah, tinubu used it to stay in
00:02:54France all through, it is that all through, you're
00:02:58already now. article will now make
00:03:02decision as to the refineries
00:03:05whether to privatize or
00:03:09of commercialize or this, but the revinist must start
00:03:11working immediately, you know what them
00:03:15did, they went after
00:03:19you, converting the billions in order to make the excuse,
00:03:23they went and brought file foil in the
00:03:26refineries and put
00:03:27of light in it and smoke came out. and they now deceive
00:03:31Nigeria, the advice are now technically okay, no,
00:03:35but new
00:03:36of people, if you remember uh, let
00:03:39me tell you what they said, they said to that the thing was in process, let
00:03:41me tell you what they said, yeah, and I'm sorry to say it,
00:03:45they should, I don't want
00:03:46to use certain words, they said that it is
00:03:50working, but if
00:03:51of you like put 1 billion
00:03:54of dollars, what of fuher, you will be getting like 900 and something
00:03:58million, so it is what... but it is not commensurat with
00:04:01the cost of doing it, why? why did you
00:04:05not make the analysis before, before
00:04:09of going into such a venture? okay, because of our time, and i
00:04:12think, good, so the issue here is that the
00:04:15refineries, they are going to be either privatized or
00:04:19commercialized, but
00:04:20of we article punish those who were involved in subsidies
00:04:24cam, 100%. yes, yes, okay, because
00:04:28he hasn't said it, let
00:04:30me tell you, okay, in, yes,
00:04:34let me, let me concede that i have access to some, you know,
00:04:38privilege information, and i can tell you
00:04:42that has made it clear, and they did it
00:04:44before,
00:04:46a in a article's time, people started refunding
00:04:50money, there are even someone that was
00:04:53in refunded after they had left office, of course you know the abacher
00:04:56story, of course you know, lot of
00:05:00people arrested them, yeah, and they started refund,
00:05:04some
00:05:04of them even refunded privately, all the
00:05:08people that mismanaged, misapplied,
00:05:11misappropriate. Nigerian money under the
00:05:15article presidency, once you hear article has been declared a
00:05:19winner, respect yourself and return the money.
00:05:23Okay, this is breaking news, just respect yourself, because
00:05:27article we go after them, articu will collect all the
00:05:30misappropriated money for nigerians, that I
00:05:34will tell you, so so the the the infinity in the old and gas sector we
00:05:38will start to will end and in all other sectors in Nigeria.
00:05:42what is going on in Nigeria, look at the fake agencies, we're
00:05:46making that, but so you because of our time, Ken, I want i wanted to ask
00:05:50you uh, what the economists
00:05:53said, because you know, I mean, I find it the
00:05:57very curious conclusion, they said, I'm sure you have seen it, the economist of London,
00:06:01yes, they said that yes, Nigerians dislike
00:06:05their president, thank you, you know, but they will
00:06:09still vote for him, may, yeah, of course. Yeah, of course
00:06:13me, of course, yeah, so now
00:06:17uh, so so that is curious uh conclusion,
00:06:20but then it strengthens the perception, and I
00:06:24think it's part the things that they also implied that look, this guy has 31
00:06:28governs, that's structure, I don't even think they went into that, but
00:06:32you this is what the argument that comes from the
00:06:35incubalo structure, we have 31
00:06:39governors who are on the ground, so that's
00:06:43whatever may be the sentiments out there you know
00:06:46which uh uh the economists subscribe to that Nigerians don't like
00:06:50the president of course they have pushback that
00:06:53the that the opposition doesn't have the structure on the ground to
00:06:57actually make the defeat possible how do you respond to that good last
00:07:01question I am not sure the economist said that
00:07:04Nigerians may vote for him that's what they
00:07:08said no I I said I'm not sure I think what they said
00:07:12that he may still win, yeah, yeah, it does not
00:07:16mean that, said he may win, good, so it's
00:07:20not, they didn't say Nigerians may still vote, because in
00:07:24Nigeria, the even the economy know that you can win by
00:07:28other means, apart from the votes of Nigeria, but I said I'm not
00:07:31sure, yeah, yeah, I will confirm exactly, so so so just for clarity,
00:07:35say Nigerians dislike their president, but may reelect
00:07:39in anyway, that's exactly what something. that
00:07:43now let me put it clearly any country where
00:07:47they dislike somebody and the person gets reelected is an
00:07:51error something is wrong somewhere
00:07:55no some oh my god
00:07:59something is wrong somewhere but it has happened before you know why yeah the
00:08:03reason is that either they are saying they don't want to waste their time going
00:08:07to vote because they know that their votes will not count or maybe
00:08:11they think that you
00:08:21said something, he said is only a thief or a mad man that
00:08:25will vote for Tinubu and
00:08:28APC, and some people are trying to raise any dust
00:08:32about it, and you know what, he said the truth, you know
00:08:36why, somebody must have a mental problem to
00:08:40meet fuel at the cost of what?
00:08:46Yeah, and now you're paying 1,500
00:08:49naira inexplicably pay, and you're voting for the
00:08:53person, something is wrong, now you met Naira at
00:08:57the cost of 450 pay dollar, and
00:09:01you are now seeing it going to 2,000 pay dollar, it was almost
00:09:05approaching dead, and you want to vote for the person, something is wrong
00:09:08somewhere, then when he
00:09:11allod. that you must be a thief, he was simply saying you must
00:09:15be a beneficiary of such corruption to be able to afford
00:09:19such lifestyle that will make you to say you want to vote for such a
00:09:23person again, and so I agree with him on that
00:09:27postulation that that you must be
00:09:31a thief, in other words, you must be a beneficiary to such
00:09:34corrupt money, or a mad man if you are not a mad man, because you must have
00:09:38a mental problem for, can you imagine if I want to fill up?
00:09:42my SUV of 100 lit of 100
00:09:46lit SUV for tank i would have to spend
00:09:4915000 nira now and I was using
00:09:5219,500 n before tinubu came in
00:09:56no will I not be checked for mental
00:10:00problem especially if the money is
00:10:02hard hand if especially if I mean I mean in a nation
00:10:06where the minimum wage is 7000 look at what NLC has said they
00:10:10want to embark a strike they've given two weeks. ultimatum,
00:10:13what are the reasons? high f price and the minimum
00:10:17wage, because they cannot understand that the are 70,000 will
00:10:21buy them half fuel tank, so that's why.
00:10:25is saying something must be wrong with you and i
00:10:28agree
00:10:30now conclude yeah good so
00:10:33conclusively has made it
00:10:37clear he's going to make life affordable for nigerians
00:10:40again is going to bring back to what it
00:10:44was per and it is very possible
00:10:47because we are a production nation now so
00:10:51when you reduce the cost of producing and
00:10:55item through provision of power, making interest
00:10:58rates accessible, then bringing
00:11:01security and ensuring that
00:11:05every factor of production is cheaper, it will reduce the
00:11:09cost of producing the barrel to $12, but how soon
00:11:13will this happen if you guys win? i said you will start seeing, you've already
00:11:17started seeing it now, haven't you started seeing it? is it not because has
00:11:20insisted
00:11:22for something will be restored that is bringing down his own? no, is the benefit,
00:11:26the benefit has started, even before articu is elected, but you
00:11:30talked about power and all of those things and it will take time because of
00:11:33corruption, that's why these people are not doing it, all right, you know what article
00:11:37advised in the issue of power, captive power,
00:11:41even from time, it's trying to tell you sir, if you
00:11:45want to base it on gas alone, if you build
00:11:49all the gas stations in the south to distribute
00:11:53it will take you years,
00:12:03use it to provide the power in that zone, you
00:12:07know of hydro you know power electric, it
00:12:11was in government for they didn't do that, and we've talked about
00:12:15this before, it
00:12:16was the VP, this was the advice he gave, was not
00:12:19accepted as president, he will implement it, Nigerians
00:12:22will have regular electricity at. affordable price,
00:12:26not aatibus price, there will be no band a, band b,
00:12:30band c, and then there will
00:12:33be no ban this morning, no, no, no, no, no, no, so I think is going to bring
00:12:37down the cost of producing crude oil
00:12:41to the word average of $12 per barrel, and
00:12:45then supply it to the nigerian refiner,
00:12:48refineries, they will now produce
00:12:51affordable refined food to Nigerians, it will... come
00:12:55down to less than 300 nine okay, thank you so much uh
00:12:59uh mr kent for for for the insight and the promises that you've
00:13:03made on behalf of our day you know he will
00:13:06go after the city sc that nobody has done in 20
00:13:10years told me that personally that is very
00:13:13important i am one calling for that and
00:13:16find that encouraging i made note of it thank you so much for uh
00:13:20for your uh conversations that are always very frank and interesting and thank you for
00:13:24coming to you sources, thank you very much, and uh, well done for the tough job that you guys are
00:13:28doing out there,
00:13:29you know, uh, democracy is uh, is exciting, and this is
00:13:33why we have democracy, thank
00:13:43sources, today as we continue in the season
00:13:46of uh the 66th independence of
00:13:50Nigeria in this month of October, I have guest
00:13:54who is going to be talking about uh the issues around
00:13:58independence, what we should be focused on, and of course some the
00:14:01things that happened during the United Nations General Assembly, which just
00:14:05passed, so I like to welcome back into the
00:14:08studio uh, Mr. Emmanuel Ogebe,
00:14:11US-based Nigerian lawyer, human rights
00:14:14advocate and the winner the Nigerian
00:14:17diaspora merit award,
00:14:21happy independence to Nigeria, well, I only wish you happy. new month
00:14:25because
00:14:26i can't see how the independence has benefited nigerians
00:14:30seriously this in the
00:14:32county
00:14:34the si but let's start there emmanuel what's your own uh
00:14:37take as nigeria turns 66 well i have to
00:14:41say i think the best thing the administration
00:14:45did with this independence was not to
00:14:48celebrate it with a parade buse it would have
00:14:51been a parade of failure a parade of non
00:14:55sense uh, Nigerians cannot look at themselves
00:14:58today and say that they are better of now than in
00:15:021960 when they received independence. In
00:15:05fact, for we northern Christians, we're more
00:15:08marginalized now than when the British
00:15:12handed over power, why? because you will find that at
00:15:16that time the British gave presidency to a southern
00:15:20Christian and they gave prime ministership to another
00:15:24Muslim so... it was even balanced then, so the current
00:15:28dispensation is worse than when the British handed
00:15:32over to us politically, and it is worse than when the British handed over
00:15:35to us, economy.
00:15:39That's - that's you know you just went
00:15:42for the joga right away there, you see there's not
00:15:46much to argue about it, the pain on the faces
00:15:50of Nigerians is so discennible,
00:15:53nobody is genuinely happy in this country, whether they are Christians or Muslims,
00:15:57whether they are Christians or Muslim, in fact the Muslim Muslim ticket has ended
00:16:01up hurting them more, which should
00:16:05tell us as nation that really... should not be the soul determinant
00:16:09factor, but competency and deliverables
00:16:13for the citizens. Unfortunately, we have a country
00:16:16where some governors are deemed as performers simply because
00:16:20they built a musk in each local government, it doesn't care, it doesn't matter if they steal the
00:16:24whole money the state and marry foreigner in
00:16:27yemen, so long as it build
00:16:29a mosk, democracy, dividend has been delivered in some
00:16:33other sections the country, they want to see rodes.
00:16:37paved, they want to see, you know, enabling environment for
00:16:41business, education, healthcare, and all of that,
00:16:44so different sections the country do not have the same
00:16:48definition of what development is, there are some people in
00:16:52this country that the only time they will be
00:16:55happy is if it is their religion that is
00:16:58dominant, if they have that, you don't care about anything
00:17:02else, that's why you have a character like shake jangier
00:17:06coming out and saying, that uh, if christians don't like it, they
00:17:10should leave the country, that Muslim Muslim ticket has come to
00:17:13stay, it is means of domination, and he's been rly criticized
00:17:17for that, and and and the sath thing is that evidence has come to
00:17:21light that he received a massive pay off from the
00:17:24administration, so essentially these are the kinds of things that
00:17:28we have, men who are supposed to speak truth to
00:17:32power are being purchased by those in power, when you say that evidence has
00:17:36come of is still
00:17:37if an alligation. because
00:17:38you know I don't know about
00:17:39there was a publication that has not been reported or challenged by
00:17:43him, I don't
00:17:44it know was prion times or gazzett that he received
00:17:48600 million, and if you look at the history of
00:17:51Nigeria, the politicians have been
00:17:54buying prayers and prayer warriors and prayer
00:17:58contractors, oh my god,
00:18:00it is, it's a proven fact, yeah, well you, so so let's look at what the
00:18:04president said during his uh independence days. speak, he said
00:18:08that when they came in, when he came in in 2023, Nigeria was
00:18:12like a cancer patient, and that past
00:18:15leaders,
00:18:16you know, past leaders have been treating it with - with painkillers such as
00:18:20morphine, you know, are leaving the tough
00:18:23decisions of doing uh, a surgical
00:18:27operation to take away the cancer, and he said that cancer has
00:18:31been spreading, so he says he is coming in to do this cancer
00:18:34surgery, and that that is why things are tough.
00:18:37"unfortunately, the presidency of Nigeria has become
00:18:41a health insurance package for people who
00:18:45are ill to take care themselves. We saw that with Buhari,
00:18:49he came and he used Nigeria to sponsor his health treatments
00:18:52abroad. This is where this president is continuing from. He cannot tell
00:18:56us that the president that he incubated and who he
00:19:00put in power for eight years was a
00:19:03failure when he himself said that he's coming to build on what.
00:19:07that man did, if you're coming to build a what a
00:19:11destroyer did, that means you're a co-destroyer. see, let me be very
00:19:15clear with you, okay? when i come to Nigeria
00:19:19now, i feel personally
00:19:23safer than when i used to come under Bukhari, because
00:19:27Buhari was vindictive, vicious person, at
00:19:30least you had your your your freedom, you have more
00:19:34confidence, i have more confidence, and you
00:19:37have to... hide less exactly, receive less
00:19:40warnings from people about being targeted by the government now,
00:19:44so you give you give it this president, give him that credit, but
00:19:48here's the issue that a problem i have, all right, you
00:19:52remove subsidy, all right, you you deregulated
00:19:56theena, but some the actions you take are inconsistent
00:20:00with the pains and sacrifices nigerians are making, you bought yourself a
00:20:04presidential jet that was never appropriated by the... national
00:20:07assembly when Buhari bought place without
00:20:11appropriation, it was one place for
00:20:15to fight terrorism, not for his personal
00:20:18angandisement. The other thing that has happened, which is
00:20:22stunning to me, I noticed recently report that
00:20:25Nigeria forgave NMPC
00:20:28a debt of $1 billion dollars. Is NMPs supposed to
00:20:32be taking care of Nigerians or are Nigerians supposed to be taking care of NMPs?
00:20:36How is that possible? Now to make matters
00:20:40was, Mr. President gave contracts to his
00:20:43friend again without
00:20:45tender, one road from Lagos to Calaba.
00:20:50dollars 12 a
00:20:51billion second road from badagri to
00:20:54keby 12 billion 24
00:20:57billion yes to one
00:21:01man his friend in Paris 24
00:21:04billion the loan that he took from
00:21:08the UK in march for the ports 1 billion
00:21:1225 billion dollars to one man but just to be very
00:21:15exact I don't think the whole 25 billion has been
00:21:19sourced. already, but I see your point, I'm just, I'm just
00:21:23being uh, you feeky with the with the figures, your point is well
00:21:27made, in fact it is even worse,
00:21:30when Mr. President was away from
00:21:34the United Nations General Assembly, while working in
00:21:38Paris,
00:21:39there was an announcement that additional 7 billion dollars
00:21:43as we given to
00:21:44Shaguri, when you add
00:21:48the 25 billion to 7 billion. that is 33
00:21:52billion to one individual
00:21:56this last 7 billion of which you speak that i'm
00:21:58not aware of what's that for it's again for port development in
00:22:02og state okay well all these are the
00:22:06the are plans most them are plans not that the i see your pointman
00:22:10but i'm just trying to make it so that these moneies have not come in most
00:22:14them but your argument is made no point the fact the matter
00:22:18is yeah yeah we are obligated by the sovereign
00:22:21okay, it's a sovereign obligation, yeah, that means that we're bound
00:22:25to pay, that means we're indepted for the future, no, it means
00:22:29that at least they are telling us that that is the commitment that is been made
00:22:33and we we expect that the money are coming, i'm just saying that is
00:22:38some not if those moneies have them come, are mous
00:22:40that the next president you know after him, maybe for eight
00:22:44years can reverse, you know, i'm just
00:22:47saying, well let tell you right now as we
00:22:51speak, the national assembly has approved multiple tranches of
00:22:55money for them, so the payments are already been
00:22:58made, they what was signed in UK with
00:23:02the UK with the Nigerian government,
00:23:03that was about 700 million pounds, which is over
00:23:07billion dollars, again it was back by sovereign
00:23:10guarantee, so we're hooked in whether we like it or not,
00:23:14we're going to import the steel from UK, we're going to
00:23:18hire UK companies to do it, and shagori is the implementer on this
00:23:22side, so you can see that one
00:23:25individual received contracts
00:23:29exceeding more than 12% the entire GDP of
00:23:32Nigeria, over 12% the entire GDP the country went
00:23:36to one individual, how can you defend that? so
00:23:39these are some the reasons why you want to give him credit for some things, but
00:23:43you look at some other things and say this makes no sense, assure you, if
00:23:47Mr. President has spent 25. billion dollars on
00:23:51electricity and i know that i will have 24 hours
00:23:55of electricity, i don't care if it gives it
00:23:58to, but this is not a
00:24:02national priority, it is not number one, that road is not
00:24:06number one, it is not number two,
00:24:07it is not number three, why? because electricity is a
00:24:11priority, security is a prior, even
00:24:14healthcare, even healthcare is a priority, did you see the video the
00:24:18former uh? said somebody that we all respect because headed
00:24:22over power for which credit we must give him, but there he goes
00:24:26uh, letting himself be used as an
00:24:29advertiser of an Indian hospital, yes
00:24:33i mean, did you think they took advantage of him? well, you
00:24:36see, it would be a shame if we have a
00:24:39leader who can be taken advantage of in this manner, but the
00:24:43fact the matter is when i was in prison in the
00:24:47villa 30 years ago, i was and when i
00:24:51passed out the my torturers took me to
00:24:55- clinic where i was treated so i was
00:24:59shocked to hear a few years ago when he was in power that the
00:25:03first lady was complaining that even panadol did not have even
00:25:06under abacha who stole over 5 billion
00:25:10dollars they are so clinic was operational i was
00:25:14treated as a nigerian citizen and we
00:25:17are telling me today that we have to send the head of
00:25:21states abroad for for new replacement, god have
00:25:24mercy. uh anyway, so so so you you don't
00:25:28see lot of uh good things to talk about, that is with
00:25:32regard to the independence, but let us even look
00:25:35at the UN general assembly, okay, which is another very
00:25:39painful experience for me. i was there in new york last week as as
00:25:42you also were, yes, and for the
00:25:45third time uh,
00:25:48vice
00:25:49president uh, Setima represented Nigeria now setting the record as
00:25:53the only Nigerian vice president yes to attend three years in
00:25:57Euro absolutely now what is painful for me is
00:26:00this the you and general assembly is the
00:26:04only international obligation that every
00:26:07country is expected to abide by in
00:26:11the world, there are no two in the
00:26:14responsibilities of a president, the only one is to attend the
00:26:18UN general assembly, represent your country and be a voice for your country. what do you
00:26:22mean by that? well, it is
00:26:26designated that in July in September of every year, there
00:26:30will be there will be a general assembly. and or there will
00:26:34be plenary session where all the heads of state will show up to
00:26:37address, that is the minimum duty required to
00:26:41fulfill, when you say minimum, because there's no nothing
00:26:45else, you are not required to attend anything other than the annual
00:26:49general meeting, and Mr. President
00:26:52has failed to show up three out of four times, that is a
00:26:5675% failure reads, now here's
00:27:00here's what is happening when send your number two
00:27:03player, he does not carry the weight that number one carries, you
00:27:07know how
00:27:08it is, the kinds of meetings that people, you a president we have, vice
00:27:12president we not have, because most people know his spare tire,
00:27:16he's reading somebody's address, he doesn't have the ability to follow
00:27:19through, thank you for coming and thank you
00:30:43Hello, nice to have you join us on Newstack, reaching from channels televisions, global headquarters
00:30:47in Lagos Nige, I'm Dominic Iwiwa, these are the stories and reports we're tracking
00:30:51at the moment, now president Paul Atnubu has welcomed the World
00:30:55Banks October 2026 Niger development update titled Beyond the
