00:00:00then apart from that, the fact that we work quite a lot with lot of school
00:00:03leaders, we work with sub chairman, we work with
00:00:07commissioners and also the fact that we work with eds of
00:00:10agencies, it makes it really easy for us to be able to
00:00:15of of access, so there's no problem at all with that, and where people want to,
00:00:18mean like the lesson plants that we spoke about, what we intend doing
00:00:22is for everybody to
00:00:24be able to have access in all our offices for prescripted lesson plan, but
00:00:28don't forget that where you have the gift. and talented teachers,
00:00:31because you you have some some teachers that are well established, those ones
00:00:35conveniently can use our platform to do AI generated lesson
00:00:39platform, mean to do AI um lesson plans, and with that
00:00:43as well we can differentiate lessons, because those are the kind of things we're
00:00:46propagating, because unfortunately we have
00:00:49of dealt with our gifted and talented children in Nigeria as normal
00:00:53children, I mean some schools are training them really well,
00:00:56but those are the areas that we still have lot of concerns with.
00:01:00where children are been very boistous because they've not been
00:01:03challenged enough and where um the lessable children are being
00:01:07neglected, the fact that you autistic as a child does not
00:01:11mean does not write you off, that child may be the best child,
00:01:15maybe the genius, but because nobody has actually taken time to understand
00:01:19how to access the
00:01:20of child, and those are the kind of things that we're doing at the moment to say, you can go a
00:01:23website and we can do lot
00:01:25of with MCPD, another thing is on that we have
00:01:29of accredited trainers. that we have to accredit because we
00:01:32don't just allow um schools to just use just any trainer
00:01:36because we are moving away from where people will just
00:01:39of go and download resources from the website and go and be training our
00:01:42schools for god sake you are misleading our school so what we're
00:01:46saying is bring your
00:01:48of resources call us invite us will come and inspect wel
00:01:52come and be part of you accredits you see how the
00:01:56curriculum is actually going to be um have you actually addressed?
00:02:00needs that we have today and any RDC
00:02:03has uh newly, I mean they've just reviewed their own curriculum as well because we're
00:02:07trying to adapt it to suit our children now because we can't afford to be
00:02:11teaching children for nine to five learning, we're looking for lifelong
00:02:14learners, so all those key things they matter and those are the kind of things
00:02:18that is making us to say we want accredited trainers to actually come and
00:02:22get accredited by TROCM,
00:02:24I i also want to find out because
00:02:28um for me "a lot of what you're talking about is technical
00:02:32and more computer and all
00:02:35of that, you go to the local areas,
00:02:39the teachers are sometimes close to the students they
00:02:43teach in terms of educational learning,
00:02:46computers, all
00:02:48of this, i can tell you that there are schools that even this issue of lesson
00:02:52plan may not be as strict as it should be, which brings
00:02:56us to the issue
00:02:56of the standards in those schools, how do you manage?"
00:03:00the different cader of uh teachers you
00:03:03already have on ground, some who themselves are struggling
00:03:07to read and right before you start
00:03:10a taking them into the issue of computer,
00:03:13your your website and that goes into what
00:03:17we spoke about at initial stay, that's where we introduce foundational learning, yes,
00:03:21because we have quite,
00:03:23mean i remember when i was a dg in lagus, we had a particular
00:03:26school e where a teacher was teaching a primary four class, she couldn't
00:03:30communicate in English, so I had to
00:03:32a speak Euroba before we could communicate, and to me that was seriously
00:03:36appalling, so what we're saying now is for you to teach in our
00:03:39schools, you must be um, you must have, you must sit for
00:03:43examination, and for you to sit for exam, because there's no way you can come
00:03:47of and cheat, um, everything has been randomized, um, if I sit
00:03:51beside you in TROCN exam, the two of us will be doing
00:03:54different exams, so if you copy me you're just copying nonsense, so with all
00:03:58that is making a lot of people. now to tffen up themselves,
00:04:01however we're in Nigeria, you still have, because when I
00:04:05told you that oh um in some states we've been supporting them to
00:04:09recruit, there were some states that we got to where about 250 of
00:04:13applicants had fake TRC and
00:04:16certificate
00:04:18and so that made us to uh
00:04:22open our eyes that what's happening because even when I took over um when
00:04:26I took over as the um register there was a particular face
00:04:30platform that had about 74 thousand of our teachers, it was fake
00:04:33platform, wow, and so what we did was to register
00:04:37officially, um, contact facebook, we've taken all those sites
00:04:40down, however, for people who are actually uh
00:04:44impersonating on us at the moment, we're working with them because one is going to be
00:04:48paraded very soon, you know, he has everything about
00:04:52of TRCN, when I travel, when I go somewhere, he puts it on his own platform as
00:04:56well, so he has clone our
00:04:59of platform, so what? saying is we need every teacher to actually be checked
00:05:02in terms of standards, trocn conveniently cannot do it by
00:05:06by itself, so that's why we need
00:05:09of every every school leader, the subeb chairman. "the
00:05:13commissioners, everybody needs to understand that no matter what you're doing in
00:05:17education, how effective is it to learning
00:05:20outcomes, because I sit at meetings and sometimes what
00:05:23people are discussing may not be relevant to the outcome the learning the
00:05:27children, so because I mean I know my background is UK
00:05:31and in UK you don't sit any meeting as any head of
00:05:34agency if your work is not actually making impact to the
00:05:38child's learning, so that's something that we are propagating now and thank god we have..."
00:05:42Dr. Tunjo sir and also uh professor Suwebad
00:05:45because all of us and the fact that you have lot of educationists are
00:05:49the em of affairs is making everybody to realize that it cannot be business as
00:05:53usual how impactful is he and that's why we're celebrating excellence at
00:05:57all times we're celebrating excellence where we see
00:06:00underperforming um things we share it with everybody to
00:06:04make sure that training can address that and also the fact that we're
00:06:08going to be giving out the lesson plan as well that's going to move education
00:06:11forward. drastically because we had the same problem in England as
00:06:15well as at 2000 sorry as at 1999 the same
00:06:19problem was there where learning was really uh learning
00:06:23was not good in quite a lot of areas and there was schools going under
00:06:27notice to improve what we did was to give them resources
00:06:31because yes and that really helped and that moved education
00:06:34drastically forward because it wasn't just helping teachers it was also
00:06:38helping the children and teachers were actually learning lot from that.
00:06:42so that's something that we're doing at the moment, the only thing is we don't want to go and
00:06:46copy what is being done abroad, but let's contextualize our
00:06:49result, mean our lesson plans to the needs of
00:06:53Nigeria, now i want to be clear from what you're saying now,
00:06:57my my understanding is that we have a larger,
00:07:01almost larger population of private schools than
00:07:05private public schools, are you able to take this
00:07:08work even to the private schools and thank you very much sir.
00:07:12Definitely we are, because if I tell you the largest private school
00:07:16association that we have is AFED, that's association of
00:07:19formidable educational development, and that's for the low income teachers
00:07:23and we run quite a lot, we actually work together,
00:07:27they're part of my council, so sometimes when they're
00:07:31doing conferences, we and they invite TROCN staff to actually come
00:07:35and train to tell them about expectations, and another one for the
00:07:39middle schools will be naps, that's Nigerian. uh
00:07:43association of proprieters or whatever, they work also
00:07:47with us, we have one their members and the top schools epen
00:07:51that's um the top 80 schools in lagos and you have
00:07:55them maybe in every state you have like three f you know
00:07:58and um we work with
00:07:59them because at the end the day we want everybody to speak from the same
00:08:03him sheet standard has got to get better good now back to the
00:08:07issue of your when you started you said you want to professionalize the teaching
00:08:11profession lot of teachers will complain that they are overworked,
00:08:15underpaid, and here you are now coming, you are adding the
00:08:19issue of standard, they now have to go and do exam and all that, you go to
00:08:22class a teacher that should be teaching 20, what's the
00:08:25number, they should be teaching 25 to 25
00:08:29st are teaching triple that number,
00:08:33and we we've now drawn up a code of conduct that will hold him
00:08:36to, what are you doing to ensure that while the
00:08:40profession is being made? a profession, the standards
00:08:44and the expectations are also being brought okay, thank you very much sir, I
00:08:48must say in terms of infrastructure, um, this
00:08:52government has done so well in terms of how do we get more
00:08:55classrooms for schools, how do we get more teachers
00:08:59and um, we have some examplary states, if you
00:09:02go to abier, I mean, I was dased with what they were doing in
00:09:06education when I got there, and states also, and the fact that
00:09:10I'm coming from the um, self as well, i know quite a lot of
00:09:14states that have been able to increase the number of um classrooms
00:09:17and also they're reducing drastically the number
00:09:21of children each each school,
00:09:25so um the only thing is we still have pockets of
00:09:28states that are still very very large for
00:09:31classroom um setup, but we will not relent our
00:09:34effort in propagating what is expected because that's
00:09:38something that is really happening and the fact that we work with nigerian governors for.
00:09:43is making everybody to be more assertive of what the
00:09:46expectation should be in our schools, we're not fully there yet, but by the
00:09:50time we come for the second time, I'm sure be able to do more work. Okay, yes,
00:09:54now I want to lean on your
00:09:57experience, I like the way you've stated
00:10:00it, you've worked in the UK, also led some quality
00:10:04control in Lagos, now you are here, if you were to look at the whole
00:10:08our whole educational sector, because
00:10:11it's you... touched on issue, the issue of AI, the
00:10:15issue of digital learning and the way
00:10:19it's changing, yeah, for the Nigeria we
00:10:22need the human. resource we're
00:10:26trying to create that will help uh build this Nigeria we
00:10:30need, if you were to look at our educational sector, where do you think we have the most
00:10:34challenge right now? I think quality assurance should be given enough
00:10:38attention, we need to have good practitioners,
00:10:41exemplary officers, because who is going to lead your quality
00:10:45assurance, it matters, because what transformed education in
00:10:48England is all about quality assurance offstead, offstead is coming to your
00:10:52school, you don't mess up, they know what they're looking for. they're not looking for
00:10:55money, they're looking for how they can actually partner with you and
00:10:59move education better. another thing will be number three will be for
00:11:03me will be leadership and management, because if we
00:11:07improve teachers across board in Nigeria, if we don't improve -
00:11:11school leaders then we have missed it. um, school
00:11:14leaders must be trained, um, they
00:11:18must be specially trained to lead our schools. are you
00:11:22talking of proprietors of principals or? principals and
00:11:26talking of school head teachers, i'm talking of even
00:11:29propritors, so this is the administrative arm, the
00:11:32administrative arm of schools, they need to understand what leadership and management
00:11:36is all about, how do you empower people, how do you
00:11:40manage results, how do you manage people,
00:11:43you know there are quite a lot of things, do you have vision for that
00:11:46school, because when you have vision then you can actually
00:11:50cascade that down to your teachers, because sometimes you have people are
00:11:54leading schools. that cannot be bothered, and if I'm a teacher,
00:11:58I'm working so hard under you, but you're not noticing, after a
00:12:01while, I i can go quiet and say, let me join the
00:12:05others to just be bad, you know, so there's a need for us to celebrate
00:12:09good practice, there's a need for us to look into leadership and management, because
00:12:13most the countries that are doing so well in education, they went to look
00:12:17into their leadership area, so leadership is is very
00:12:21important, how do you support teachers with the right trainings and
00:12:25empowering them and also sharing the good practice, celebrating success at
00:12:29all times, because every teacher wants to be celebrated, they don't want
00:12:32to be relegated,
00:12:34you know, so it must be a professional pride, we
00:12:37give back to you as journalist sir, we give back to all the medical doctors, we get back
00:12:41to engineers, why are they better respected than teachers, so we need
00:12:45to respect teachers in our society, and that's something we're propagating at the
00:12:49moment, okay, so from where you sit as the registr right now,
00:12:53you you came in 500 500 years ago
00:12:56and um you know what you met, you've
00:13:00now had time to see the landscape,
00:13:04what are you hoping you, what timeline can you give us
00:13:08that you're hoping you be able to nigerians will be able to feel a difference in our
00:13:12education? thank you very much, um with my colleagues we have
00:13:16about um we do target seting every three
00:13:19months, you can see my boat there, there's a boat so there's always
00:13:23a target and
00:13:25I have very formidable team and with that target we know how to
00:13:29work towards it, everybody has including that
00:13:32particular gateman must know what to do to actually
00:13:36support education, because everybody has got to so we need to
00:13:40um so to me I want to say that in the next three four
00:13:43years um I mean problem in education
00:13:47will be a thing of a pass provided we continue with strong
00:13:51leadership team that's very important because - don't have strong
00:13:55leadership team that has clear vision of this is where we're going, this is
00:13:59how we're going to achieve it, then we can miss it again, because
00:14:02sometimes you can be so, you can say, oh, i'm good, i want,
00:14:06you need an enabling environment, and that's what i want to give to mr.
00:14:10president, mr. president, president, has given
00:14:13everybody great enabling environment to be able to
00:14:16flourish, he wants you to actually bringing new ideas,
00:14:20he permits you to bring in new initiatives and that's what is helping at the
00:14:24moment. and not only that, the fact that - president will
00:14:28tell you that what exactly is the what's the data looking like, and that's
00:14:32why you will see dr.jal always working towards data that let's look at
00:14:36the data, how are they performing, where we have lot of out of school children,
00:14:40what's gosing that, because conveniently when you look at how many
00:14:43children, how many of our private schools that we have, we have
00:14:46more um naury primary schools, but we don't
00:14:50have lot of um secondary schools and how many people can afford
00:14:54their children to... to secondary school, so the gap between nury
00:14:58primary and secondary is so much, and what do we do? do
00:15:02we need to create more schools? so there's a need for holistic
00:15:05approach, there's a need for good leaders to come around the table and say,
00:15:09okay, we've done all this in the last few days, but what is the next
00:15:13way forward? and these good leaders should transcend federal, they should also
00:15:17be from other lay, from other layers as well, because you cannot just talk to
00:15:21federal, mean within my own and team the council.
00:15:25I have lot of people from the state that actually attend every three months, we look at
00:15:29our result, we look at data, what's the data telling us and
00:15:33because I have some the heads of agencies also within my council they can.
00:15:37say oh, i need to go and review my curriculum, i need to go and do this
00:15:41area, so there's there must be lot of discussions. above
00:15:44all, i want to say that for teachers, for them to transform
00:15:48education, what TRCN is propagating is we must not forget the
00:15:52forces, the forces will be, we want children to be allowed to
00:15:55communicate, there has
00:15:57to be lot of speaking and listening in their schools, there has to be lot of
00:16:00creativity, teachers are got to be creative, but 21st century child
00:16:04obviously will get board if you are using
00:16:10schools at
00:16:11the
00:16:17in our moment, the last but not the least must be communication, so
00:16:20communication, creativity, critical thinking must be in the
00:16:24school, doctor, I like to thank you very much, it's been a very
00:16:28interesting time, I think we've tried to touch some things, we might not have
00:16:32touched all, but I'm grateful for the time you spent, thank you so much, thank
00:16:36you so much sir.
00:16:41One thing that remains very important is this: government
00:16:45policies are designed for citizens and it is citizens
00:16:49who must speak up whether those policies are working or
00:16:53not. That is how we ensure government truly
00:16:56works for the good of society. We love to hear your reactions
