00:00:00life, it's just a great feeling, be i'm just going to show the camera crew, the new bathroom,
00:00:04independence for them, peace of mind
00:00:06in for the family, but really we're just
00:00:08of trying to treat everyone like it's my
00:00:09grandma,
00:00:17of hello,
00:00:18of good evening, it's me,
00:00:22Jacob on state
00:00:23of the nation
00:00:24of tonight, of was
00:00:25in there interference in the 2016 referendum from
00:00:29russia? and I've had the clear answer that yes there was. I
00:00:32implied no such thing in my comments on the rest
00:00:36is politics podcast. Andy Burnham's anti-brexit
00:00:40crusade is exposed as he tells a podcast that
00:00:43of Russian interference was present in the 2016 referendum and it to be
00:00:47contradicted by one of his ministers
00:00:48in and then later by himself. After pushing closer integration in the house of commons this
00:00:52afternoon is the prime minister saying the quiet part out loud and taking
00:00:56us back into the EU by the back
00:01:00a of door. Also tonight.
00:01:01of In my meeting with the president, I also raised the Falkland
00:01:04Islands
00:01:05a and the clear and declared will
00:01:10of of the islanders to remain British. The Prime Minister has ordered investigation after Jemie
00:01:14of news exposed a campaign of harassment against Falkland Islanders by
00:01:18Argentinians funning claims that President Javier Mile is bullying
00:01:22the residents. With the Prime Minister failing to set out a plan is Labor's in
00:01:26action leaving the Falklands
00:01:27of vulnerable plus. on our values and
00:01:31our way of life.
00:01:34of As Thursday marks the fifth anniversary of Sir David Amos's murder, the safety of
00:01:37politicians is back in parliament's mind. Secretary today announced
00:01:41an urgent review and security arrangements for politicians and royals, including
00:01:45former MPs after the murder of Ann
00:01:47of Widdicam is enough being done to keep public's figures safe.
00:01:51And the
00:01:52of Prime Minister has published details of his contacts with Magister City's
00:01:56Abu Dhabi owners, having repeatedly said that any
00:01:59of criminal... must be punished, there's nothing to suggest any wrong doing on Bernham's
00:02:03part, but does it
00:02:05of suggest that politicians need to be more wary of receiving hospitality, which makes
00:02:09them look fishy even when they're not, state
00:02:12of the nation
00:02:15in starts
00:02:21of
00:02:27now, also be joined by my most penetratingly recipient panel, the former conservative
00:02:31MP and minister lord redwood and
00:02:36of the former labour MP Stephen pound. As always, let me know what you think,

00:02:48in Good evening, your top stories from the GB News room at two minutes
00:02:52past eight. The prime minister has told MPs it would be a
00:02:55dereliction of duty not to seek closer ties to the
00:02:58of European of Union. insisting the status quo is
00:03:01of not good enough for Britain,
00:03:03a key summit next month, the two sides will seek to sign new food and drink
00:03:07agreement, a youth mobility scheme, and pact on
00:03:11emissions trading, which the PM hopes could provide, a 10
00:03:14billion
00:03:15of pound boost to the economy.
00:03:16of Addressing the
00:03:17of commons, Andy Burnan promised the British public will be the boss at every
00:03:21stage of renegotiations. The foreign
00:03:24of secretary says Britain won't tolerate threats on our soil following
00:03:28last
00:03:28a month's suspected terror. at REF Farford. Edmir Laband has
00:03:32summoned the
00:03:33of Iran's ambassador to the UK and sanctioned two other
00:03:37senior Iranian officials. The Prime Minister says the incident at the airbase
00:03:41in
00:03:41of Glostershire last month was highly likely coordinated in
00:03:44Iran and almost certainly directed
00:03:47of by the IRGC. The home secretary Shabana
00:03:51Mahmoud has announced there'll be an urgent review
00:03:56of of the security provided to MPs and other public figures following the death of Anna.
00:04:01police support will be expanded to include leaders of political parties
00:04:04who aren't MPs as well
00:04:06of as me peers, former MPs and former members of devolved
00:04:10parliaments. reform
00:04:12of UK's home affairs spokesperson
00:04:14Zia Yusuf, who is not currently an MP, welcomed
00:04:16the move, but said it was disappointing, it took so long for the government
00:04:20to act. Ukraine's president Vladimir
00:04:24of Zelensky says it's increasingly clear Russia is unwilling to accept a US
00:04:28proposed cease fire on energy strikes. Moscow has hit
00:04:32six energy facilities across the country
00:04:35of today. That's despite Donald Trump announcing both sides had agreed to a
00:04:39ceasefire just yesterday. Russia's foreign minister says Ukraine
00:04:43deserves no
00:04:45in respite. And a World War II veteran Henry Rice has died at the age of
00:04:49100. He served as a signalman on HMS Eastway as
00:04:53part
00:04:54of of the Normandy landings and received the legion the honor from the French government. He
00:04:58also called for schools to teach.
00:05:00of children more about the war. previously speaking to GB News, he
00:05:04was
00:05:05of of of concerned about
00:05:06of the current state of international affairs. how important is it to you that we
00:05:10of remember
00:05:11all of our troops at the... troops who risk their lives on that
00:05:14day, well obviously it's most
00:05:17important, but having said that,
00:05:21why should i go different and say why are
00:05:25certain people in the world today having
00:05:29lived during this period, why are they trying to
00:05:33do it all over again? you're up to date for now, i'll be

00:06:03and president,
00:06:11welcome back to... nation that seems to be Andy
00:06:15Burnham's view of what's been going on. Listen to this. I've asked
00:06:19the question myself coming in uh to this role because I gave a
00:06:22speech to the UN recently on this very topic. I don't think we knew back
00:06:26then the extent to which there was state-sponsored interference in
00:06:30the British Democratic process, but I asked the question coming into
00:06:34Downing Street, well was there interference in the uh
00:06:382016 referendum from Russia, and I've had the clear answer that yes there
00:06:41was. Well prime minister,
00:06:45windfene changeable huff puff always is a prime minister, because this is what he
00:06:49said today. I implied no such
00:06:53thing in my comments on the rest is politics
00:06:57podcast, I think she should go back and and look
00:07:01again.
00:07:01It is matter of record, Mr. Speaker, that Russian
00:07:05actors sought to interfere in the
00:07:0829 general election, and we think it is.
00:07:12conceivable that this was the first
00:07:15time, so he said no such thing other than the thing that he had
00:07:19said immediately before. for the record, what i said in Russian, or rather mangled
00:07:23Russian, was that GB News had been taken over by President Putin and that I
00:07:27confess to being a secret Russian agent, neither of those is of course
00:07:31true, but it's the paranoia the remainers and
00:07:35it's classic socialism, the socialist always believes
00:07:38in false consciousness that the voter never does something,
00:07:42because well-informed, intelligent, thoughtful, the voter doesn't agree with
00:07:46them, it is because they don't understand enough. sometimes it's
00:07:50because they were allegedly lied to, on this occasion, it's because the
00:07:54Russians somehow managed to change their minds and get them to
00:07:58vote for Brexit, as if when you went into the polling station, you picked up
00:08:02that pencil and you tried to put it in the remain box, but suddenly
00:08:05Russian pressure was on your finger and it went
00:08:09leave. It's for the birds, it's a...
00:08:12fantastical conspiracy theory that yes, Russia
00:08:16sent bots and put things online and all of
00:08:19this, just as guardian readers wrote to good citizens of
00:08:23Ohio in the 2004 American election, telling
00:08:27them to vote against George Bush Jr.
00:08:31and one Barack Obama came to this country during the
00:08:35referendum and told us we'd be in the back the queue. Nobody
00:08:38said this was dreadful American interference. 'I thought
00:08:42it was marvelous bause it made most people I knew determined not
00:08:45to be told what do by some foreign leader. We weren't very interested
00:08:49in Mr. Obama's view or for that matter Mr.
00:08:53Putin's. It is just a weird, a strange,
00:08:57bizarre paranoia, that when Donald Trump
00:09:00says the 2000 election was stolen from him, the left look at
00:09:04it with horror and say, how could he say such a thing, he is
00:09:08threatening the stability the state, and then poor old Andy
00:09:11Burnham'. can't remember what he said one day to another, it's a
00:09:15perfectly natural thing to say about Russian interference, it's it's
00:09:18paranoia, it's absurd, it's crazy stuff, we
00:09:22voted to leave the European Union because the great British people like
00:09:25democracy, they want to rule themselves, they don't want to be told what to do by a
00:09:29large bureaucracy in Brussels, it was as simple as that, and we quite
00:09:33liked having the cash back too, it's not a
00:09:37grand conspiracy, the dear old prime minister is off his
00:09:41rocker, as always "know what you think, mailm at gnews.com, but now I'm
00:09:44particularly pleased to be joined by the former political editor the sun, Trevor
00:09:48Caverner, and my panel, Lord Redwood and Stephen Pond. Travor, thank
00:09:52you for coming in. I thought the opening clips were brilliant, because these are
00:09:56going to haunt Burnham for the rest of his
00:09:59career, that we got enough you turns from Starmer, and now we're
00:10:03getting actually dishonesty from Burnham within 24
00:10:07hours. Yes, I think that um, Andy Burnham is rapidly becoming
00:10:11known as someone who'" meddles with the
00:10:13truth,
00:10:15and while socialists like to rewrite the past, he is actually
00:10:19trying to rewrite the present, um, literally almost day by
00:10:22day he'll say something, and then a few days... later completely do
00:10:26u-turn on it, and I think this is a serious risk for the new prime
00:10:30minister, because as he is clearly at least thinking
00:10:34about early general election, I think that the public is paying
00:10:37attention to this, and if they believe that he's trying to
00:10:41rewrite the last referendum result, then the very least he should
00:10:45do is promise new referendum if he goes further down the path of
00:10:49rejoining, but with this Russian staff, doesn't he open himself up to
00:10:53ridicule as well that for... all political figures, the most
00:10:56dangerous thing is to be thought of as being absurd. people can
00:11:00dislike you, they can think you're wrong. but once they think you're
00:11:04crazy, you run out of political capital. yes, and I think one
00:11:08the craziest things he's suggesting is that we would benefit by
00:11:11rejoining the European Union anyway. I mean,
00:11:15not just mentioning the costs involved, it's the surrendering the
00:11:19hard one sovereignty that was really the objective
00:11:23the people who voted for. brexit in the first place,
00:11:27and that the polls at the moment may show that there
00:11:31is support for rejoining, I think that is totally fragile and put
00:11:34to the test an actual referendum if that's what he's going to offer, or
00:11:38even if it's part the election manifesto, I think that all
00:11:42rebounds very badly on burnham personally and labor generally. Well, I
00:11:46think
00:11:46to put an election manifesto would
00:11:48be very high risk strategy, because rejoining means free
00:11:51movement of people, and the immigration problem in this country... by no
00:11:55means been solved, it's still at the forefront of political debate with reform
00:11:59announcing policies on it today, and it seems to
00:12:03me that if he promised that it would hijack the election campaign all together and
00:12:07it would be an entirely an immigration general election campaign,
00:12:11yes it would also mean joining the euro, so that's another thing, but I think immigration
00:12:14is the salient the whatever the
00:12:18election takes place uh, the the salient
00:12:22issue uh with people of all parties. Actually, I think people
00:12:26realize that we are in real and present danger because
00:12:30the changing face of this country and the changing loyalties of some
00:12:34of its newcomers and new arrivals, and
00:12:37uh, I think that is something that isn't just relevant to Britain, but across
00:12:41the uh western Europe today, and if if a prime
00:12:45minister is hoping to persuade uh, the the
00:12:49the British people that giving up our control of our borders, which
00:12:52is fragile enough already, is a good thing in the face
00:12:56of 210,00 and counting of um people have come across the
00:13:00channel in Roberdingy's in the last six or seven years
00:13:04then I think he's got a a big shot coming. Stephen, let me bring you
00:13:08in, it seemed with his party conference speech that Bernam was doing really pretty
00:13:12good job and then the bi-election victory in reuniting the
00:13:15left. Now is this part of trying to reunite the left
00:13:19or is he just a sort of wild-eyed pro
00:13:22European? It's possible. rich: look,
00:13:26let's get a couple of things straight: first, first of all, the the think business about false consciousness, this
00:13:30was a principal marks, i think got virtually nothing right in all his
00:13:33writings and he said you
00:13:35the put things, people
00:13:36how to can vote against their own interest, he talk about working class people, and and put
00:13:40that to bed in in place of strife back in in 1940 something, but what he what he's
00:13:44saying, and and i think listen to what Stephen Dowty, his minister said this morning on his
00:13:48minister contradicted him, it's quite embarrassing when the prime minister is contradicted by junior
00:13:52minister, he didn't remotely contradict him, he actually endorsed. what he said was that
00:13:56the Russians tried but failed, the prime minister seemed imply that they'd
00:13:59actually had something Jacob appreciate a jesuitical
00:14:03argument, you cannot say seemed imply, look, two days ago, a massive data center
00:14:07just southeast of Bosco was hit by, there's a 40% reduction in
00:14:11bots across the whole the European Union, we all know what they're up to, but the
00:14:15point being that they didn't change the result, but let's get back to the Barack Obama
00:14:19tried to interfere pretty directly in our election, yeah, but he did it in the open
00:14:22air, he did it so badly, bounded, he was a
00:14:25great, you're quite right, yeah, I was actually in California,
00:14:29the last American general elections, but singular lack of success, I mean, I, I accept
00:14:33that, but let's get to the absolute key point, this is about the European Union, the European Union
00:14:37today is not the European Union of June 2016, totally
00:14:41different, much worse, w, I would, I'd say that actually come into terms with a cold
00:14:45fresh air of reality, because you're now see the idea of free movement of of people across
00:14:49the whole the EU is something which is simply not working in in Poland, Slovenia,
00:14:53Slovakia, Hungary, it's people particularly Italy people now recognizing
00:14:57so if we joint the idea that I mean I hate it's very difficult argue with Trevor
00:15:00Caviner because it's like there's an element of paper infallibility about it I don't like to
00:15:04argue but the reality is if we had deal with the European like
00:15:08like like Norwegians had like the Swiss have then we would not have to accept the euro we didn't accept
00:15:12the euro before we don't have to accept the euro again you do well I'm so no that
00:15:16would not be a condition there are some and don't every single one the 27 European nations
00:15:20would have to agree we went back now that that why pay them a shed
00:15:24load of money?
00:15:25the and have
00:15:25to take a
00:15:27law of if customs
00:15:30into union you we go have to put all our prices up for imports from non-eu why do
00:15:34you want to do that farmers
00:15:36why do you want to deindustrialize? strangled
00:15:40with red tape would be desperate to actually get back to the biggest market, but there's more
00:15:44red tape if you reset and you go in and most of our companies don't
00:15:48have to apply all the rules anymore, it's only the ones that export have
00:15:51to apply all those rules, only the ones to export, you're denying one the greatest motors the
00:15:55british economy, only the ones export area of red tape is on food,
00:15:59we import almost no food to the European Union because we are a
00:16:03net importer of food, most food we produce is consumed here.
00:16:07it for export when we don't export much just put to cost on all our domestic
00:16:11farmers, you want to drive businesses out of business
00:16:15huge particularly in lamb and beef and so that's i appreciate that
00:16:19that is cattle that is we mainly export bits we don't want eat, i'm
00:16:23sorry we want eat lamb we want eat but we eat
00:16:27the we export the kidney and the livers i like actually as it happens but
00:16:30most people don't like yeah and that's we said think i was going to say we go to
00:16:34rabbit hole here but it's a bit diff "the reality is if I spent all
00:16:38those years in northern dealing with the alsa farmers union who actually voted on mass
00:16:42to actually leave the Europeans and are now desperate to get back in again farmers wanted to leave for
00:16:46deregulation they've got that the three went
00:16:49but but John I want you to answer Steven's point on the euro because I
00:16:53think that Trevor is right that there is no accession
00:16:57treaty the EU has agreed to since the Euro came in that has
00:17:00excluded the euro so I just don't see how we could get that
00:17:04again I think it's very likely um"
00:17:07I think I said exceeded to the European Union since the euro came
00:17:11in, Sweden and Denmark both exceeded before, I think it's very likely they want to drive
00:17:15very hard bargain, and and they'd be right to be very skeptical, because what would be the point
00:17:19of Burnham trying to take us back in when the two main opposition parties
00:17:23both would want to come out again as soon as they took over,
00:17:26and when trying to go into the EU will probably lose Burnam a whole pile of
00:17:30votes, particularly in the red wall areas where a lot of people believed they
00:17:34were right in the first place, and some the... polling is obviously
00:17:38misleading Mr. Burnham, because the polling says a lot of people aren't
00:17:42that impressed by Brexit so far and negative on that, well of course we
00:17:46are because we haven't used all the freedoms and we
00:17:50haven't got all the things you lot a very muddled
00:17:54parliament stopped us having a proper brexit, but if you ask
00:17:57people, if you ask people now do you want them to pass your
00:18:01laws and send you a big bill, the answer is no, if you said are you materially
00:18:05better off than you were in 2016,
00:18:07last
00:18:10I word want not to give off
00:18:10you as the Poland as one
00:18:14the country's leading political commentators, what's the politics of this? Why is
00:18:18Burnham doing this, assuming he's not just an idiot? Well,
00:18:22I think that he's appeasing very large section of his
00:18:26party that has never forgiven us for Brexit,
00:18:29and in the process, it's not the only part of
00:18:33his um um movement since becoming prime minister.
00:18:37to do things for various parts the uh left of center of
00:18:41British politics and uh that includes welfare, that includes
00:18:45immigration uh and includes green net
00:18:49zero, these are all things which are counter to the interests the
00:18:53country, but in the interests the labour party constituencies, so this is
00:18:57part of uniting the left, which is huge challenge to very divided
00:19:00right, that is, this is, and I think this is his Trump card, he
00:19:04sees the the right is being divided, "and that is why I
00:19:08believe that the Westminster gossip about early general election is
00:19:12right, I think that we'll see a budget which will surprise us because
00:19:16it will be quite tame, it will appeal to, it will appease the
00:19:20bond markets sufficiently for there to be no flutter
00:19:23afterwards, and that will be enough for uh,
00:19:27and that will be enough for Andy Burnham to
00:19:30say, I want
00:19:31have an election before I'm found out. All right, Trevor, thank you very much, and indeed to
00:19:35my panel. Next, the prime minister's..." investigation after GB
00:19:39News exposed a campaign of harassment against Falkland Islanders by the
00:19:42Argentinians, but prime minister failing to set out a plan is labor's in
00:19:46action, leaving the Falklands
00:19:47vulnerable.

00:23:01The prime minister has ordered investigation after GB News exposed to campaign of
00:23:05harassment against Falkland islanders by Argentinians. Following claims that
00:23:08President Javier Miley is bullying the residents ahead of elections,
00:23:12rejecting that 99.8% votes remained British,
00:23:16something the Prime Minister committed himself to defending today. In my
00:23:20meeting with the President, I also raised the Falkland Islands
00:23:23and the clear and declared will the
00:23:27islanders to remain
00:23:29British. I emphasize
00:23:32this point in my speech to the General Assembly,
00:23:36and that we will also always do whatever
00:23:40it takes to uphold their will. When
00:23:44asked by GB News Downing Street, said any intimidation is unacceptable, the islands
00:23:48are British and support the islands. right self-determination is
00:23:51unwavering, the under say Argentina is waging a continued
00:23:54economic campaign and they've invited President Trump to see their
00:23:58loyalties for himself, but with the prime minister and chancellor still failing to
00:24:02set out a plan for defense spending and President Miley threatening to take matters
00:24:06into their own hands, is labor's in action leaving the islands and its people
00:24:10vulnerable if we're unable to defend ourselves against Argentinian
00:24:13agitation. I'm joined now from the Falkland Islands
00:24:17by Falkland's resident Jimmy Curtis. Mr. Cutts, thank you very much for
00:24:21joining me. Tell me what is the intimidation that you're
00:24:25feeling in the Falklands and and how islanders
00:24:28responding?
00:24:32Um, it's it's been intimidation for the last four decades to be honest
00:24:36and you know it's it's ramped up a little with the oil industry
00:24:39coming around and the elections coming
00:24:41up in uh in Argentina. Um, there's been a lot quite a lot of stuff, threats
00:24:45of legal action against oil companies, there's been harassment of people
00:24:49who... here uh things on attacks on social
00:24:53media uh, yeah, it's been quite a
00:24:56lot, and are you reassured by the prime minister's
00:25:00pretty clear commitment to the Falklands and the Falkland islander's right of
00:25:04self-determination?
00:25:09yes, I think so, we send delegations over to
00:25:11the to the various parties conferences and I think we're universally supported
00:25:15across the board by all the political parties to be fair, so that gives
00:25:19us lot of reassurance and helps people stay fairly
00:25:22calm. And when
00:25:25the Falklands were invaded in 1982, there were what half dozen
00:25:29marines defending the governor's house, you've now got
00:25:33a much bigger military present, so even though there are concerns about
00:25:36defense expenditure, do the Falkland islanders still feel pretty
00:25:40safe? Oh yeah,
00:25:44we've we've got complete confidence in the military, the military
00:25:47capability
00:25:48that that there is here, it's a... as much as
00:25:50anything, during during the war one
00:25:54their ships was sunk by submarine and the rest the navy went back into
00:25:58port
00:25:58and never came
00:25:59out again and so it's 300 miles to see for them to cross to get.
00:26:02'here got the latest aircraft here, i think we're
00:26:06safe, everybody else feels pretty safe too, i think, and mile
00:26:10is an interesting figure, he's been doing amazing things for the Argentinian
00:26:13economy, do you feel, and do the Falkland
00:26:17Islanders feel that this is just what Argentinian presidents say
00:26:21during election times and that you would expect that, and not perhaps to
00:26:25take it too much to
00:26:26heart,
00:26:29nice, standard procedure, we've seen'. and you
00:26:33know every single election for the last 40 years, it's
00:26:37it's nothing new, he's you know generally he's worked on the
00:26:41economy and left us alone for the most of his time, but his popularity is a
00:26:45bit low and so he's he's pulled out the the the
00:26:48malvenus card again like they all do, like they all do, well thank
00:26:52you very much for joining me, it's a beautiful backdrop that you've got and I hope
00:26:56the weather holds up, I hear you've had a couple of tough days weather so I hope you have some better
00:27:00weather coming, thank you, well I'm joined. by my panel, Lord
00:27:03Redwood and Stephen Pownd, um, it's just electionearing by
00:27:07Mile, isn't it? Well, I hope so, and and I'm pleased that they seem quite
00:27:11relaxed, and we do have much bigger garrison, we got some planes, I hope there
00:27:15will be reinforcements of both the naval and and aviation presencets if it gets
00:27:19worse, but the real threat of course this time is to our
00:27:22economic interests and the Falkland's economic interests, and there is going to
00:27:26be legal action taken against proper exploitation the
00:27:30oil there offshore
00:27:32from the... Falklands, which would be very welcome additional boost to the
00:27:36finances the Falklands, and I just hope the British government's going to be equally
00:27:39resolute in defending or rejecting any jurisdiction of an international
00:27:43court against what are clearly Falkland assets. Steven, isn't
00:27:47the reason people a bit concerned about the Falklands, because the ridiculous
00:27:51behavior of Kir Starmer and his attorney
00:27:54general over Chagos, that people think it's a sort of free for all on British
00:27:58territory. We've moved
00:28:00on. situation is
00:28:03and John red is absolutely right about this, this is now incredibly important
00:28:06economic issue, there's a vast oil field now, you talked
00:28:10about economic miracle, in fact that the Argentinian peso is tanking, it's actually been propped up by
00:28:14America at the present time, they vast subventus, what is happening in in Argentina
00:28:18today is Chile has now discovered an enormous oil field to the south,
00:28:22Brazil is so big that BP are transferring from the north sea to Brazil, so
00:28:26he's surrounded by two countries who are actually quite rivals, actually
00:28:30got this massive, massive deposits so he's looking
00:28:33at and he's thinking the old napoleon trick, when you're in trouble, la
00:28:37patties, the country's in danger,
00:28:39you actually say there's an external threat, but here's a couple of important things, first of all
00:28:43back in my day, back in the 80s, we had one south atlantic task patrol vessel
00:28:47called figs, for the diland's guardship, and we had one down there, and
00:28:51we had an RFA that used to go back and forws between, now we actually have much
00:28:55more mobile, much more agile presence, particularly in the airfield in
00:28:58port, other interesting things, look at the state the Argentinian
00:29:01navy. at the present time, it is very, I mean, the Belgrant, as you know,
00:29:05was
00:29:06it was a rusticated old American cruiser, couldn't
00:29:10stand up to as conqueror, even it's even worse nowadays,
00:29:13back in 82, the Argentinian army was told it was going to be in you
00:29:17go, plant the flag and you come back home to Buenosaurs, they were not
00:29:21prepared, they were wer't ready for, and I give Margaret thatcher credit for, I also give Sandy
00:29:25Woodward credit for it, I give all the other people, like particularly Captain
00:29:29Hart Dike and people I knew back in the day, but this is totally different situation. "this is
00:29:32not the question about a fleet moving slowly to the south Atlantic, we have an
00:29:36RF presence there, and I thought Jimmy Curtis was actually very fair,
00:29:40indeed, and that is very good point by Stephen, that Argentina has been
00:29:44short of money for now quite a long time, its military is run down,
00:29:48it's no longer run by military dictatorship, not anything thanks to Margaret
00:29:51Thatcher, and therefore they can't actually take it even if they want
00:29:55to, well that may well be right, and so yes, I
00:29:58think the the threat is not primarily military,
00:30:02it is..." this economic challenge and I do think that oil
00:30:05- will be excellent for the Falkland islands and indeed they can then help us
00:30:09with the expenses of defending them, we can have even more elaborate
00:30:13defenses in order to because the what only what is it 1,300 people
00:30:17live in the Falklands if they've suddenly got billions of dollars of oil they're going to be
00:30:21rich in Oklahoma there's an Indian tribe called the native
00:30:25American tribe called the Osage and at one stage we're not politically correct let's
00:30:29call them red indian tribes 3
00:30:31and a half thousand people not.
00:30:36the osage tribe they were per capita the richest people on earth because he found
00:30:39oil underneath the reservation and as you know under the uh the homeest
00:30:43act they actually allowed to keep it the forklanders could be the richest people now then good luck
00:30:47to because it's pretty bitter and cold down there and it's pretty misal but they've kept the
00:30:51faith and they're actually a strong resilient people a patriotic people
00:30:55what when you talk about the very enterprising and and
00:30:57they haven't done so badly with their tourism and their farming only
00:31:0198.8 percent the people voted to remain British. Who were the
00:31:05other two per the people on the forks? I mean, okay, we're not expecting
00:31:09North Korea all the time, but even so the fact that anybody was like Gibralta, that
00:31:13was 99.9%. to remain in the European Union, so it's it's
00:31:17it's strange, but important point if I may say, Jacob, you talked about British
00:31:21action, if the British government, particularly the MOD and exceptionally the
00:31:25Navy started saying, we're doing this and we're doing that, all you're doing is ramping up
00:31:29the agenda for Miley, what we do is we treat them with absolute withering contempt,
00:31:33we've done it before, we're going to do it again, do your very, very best, but we're ready for
00:31:36you, all right, well thank you very much to my panel, what we got coming
00:31:40up a moment, all sorts of excitements, the safety of politicians in back in
00:31:44parliament mind as the home secretary today announced an urgent review and security
00:31:48arrangements for politicians and royals including people like me, formers after
00:31:52the murder of Ann Widdichom, is enough being done to keep public figures
00:31:55safe.

00:36:32from every angle, including physical threats, online risks

00:36:43desympathies to Nigel Farage following the revelation that the suspect charged
00:36:46with
00:36:47Ann Widdikam's murder plotted to attack Nigel Farage. as Thursday
00:36:51marks fifth anniversary the murder of Sir Dave Damis and earlier this year marked 10
00:36:55years since the murder of Joe Cox, is it? the security of public figures
00:36:58was taken more seriously. my panel is still with me, lord redwoord and stephen
00:37:02pound. john, i've always found this very difficult question,
00:37:06because i see that the prime minister needs to have extreme
00:37:10security, because there
00:37:11are threats from foreign countries, and the prime minister knows official
00:37:15secrets. on the other hand, an open democracy
00:37:18requires that public figures take some element of risk. how
00:37:22do we get this balance right? well, i think it has to be done in consultation with
00:37:26each individual. who may have different view of
00:37:28what is appropriate, I'm very pleased that the government is thinking of offering more,
00:37:32but not all will accept it, because
00:37:34it is very important, we keep that contact with the public. I mean, I was on the death list
00:37:38the IRA because of my connections to Margaret Thatcher for quite a long
00:37:42time, I don't think I took all the security I was offered, there was a there was
00:37:46an offer, but I was very conscious as an MP, I needed to be able to move
00:37:49around and talk to people, and that's the point isn't it, Stephen, you are
00:37:53very much, if I may flatter you, people person, you like people,
00:37:57people like talking to you, half half, you couldn't
00:38:01have hidden yourself away as a member of parliament, it wouldn't have been your
00:38:05natural personality, i live in my constituency, my children went to school in my constituency,
00:38:09my wife was a magistrate, i live there all the time, and yeah,
00:38:12a couple, well that was great, so if anyone miss behaved in your constituency, your wife sent them
00:38:15to, well she did once send somebody back to the sales for refusing to take his baseball
00:38:19cap off, yes, she's a legend in the oxfish, look,
00:38:23here's the reality, i think you're absolutely right to put your finger on it, there has to be a balance, mean i remember
00:38:27to India years and years ago and see the politicians even to just to go down to the shops and have
00:38:31motor cade and people, and I spent lot of time
00:38:33in northern Ireland, I understand how important these things are, but if you wrap
00:38:37someone in cotton wool, you don't just insulate them, you insulate the people around
00:38:41them because they no longer have that contact. I used to absolutely treasure the fact every
00:38:45Friday night I'd sit in the Greenford hall and anybody come, I didn't about
00:38:48appointments, okay, I did have alarm button, no question about that, and the I
00:38:52police was, knew
00:38:53where but nobody was stopped from coming in to see me, because I had those
00:38:5630,000. had the right to come and see me, so how do on the other
00:39:00hand, I was Stephen Timps and he was stabbed in Newum, back in I think
00:39:04it was 202, and simply he was doing exactly the same thing, he was there
00:39:08in the library having open surgeon,
00:39:10the woman came in and just stuck k so it's a question of balance, partly I
00:39:13think MPS have to be a little bit cautious and I not going to mention that I know number
00:39:17of MPs who are taking their own personal precautions not traveling as much in public as
00:39:21they used to, we also have to have early warning system because what's different now
00:39:25between when you and I were in the house, is social media now people now
00:39:29identify people's home addresses and widdickham's home
00:39:33address was actually a public document mind you she called it widicom's
00:39:36rest so so so it's that difference now and it's the way that the the people who actually
00:39:40live in the darkness who actually been given almost a cart blanch to attack people
00:39:44because the familiarity that they feel so it's got to be a balance but ultimately i would
00:39:48say i come down on the site of traveling on the e1 bus from eating boardway station that
00:39:52you need to be connected with your electorate you want to see your
00:39:56electorate um, but there have been these terrible cases, and the
00:40:00difficulty the terrible cases is that there's very little
00:40:04intelligence with the IRA, the ira was probably quite well
00:40:07infiltrated, there was a lot of knowledge, and there were
00:40:10listening devices and so on, with
00:40:14um, people, well they did kill several, oh they did, they were very dangerous, I'm not, I'm
00:40:18not lessening the risk, but it was much easier for the
00:40:21police to say, here are 50 people who are at risk from the
00:40:24IRA, whereas now, now
00:40:28you're saying and there was an offer um and then you had to make your own
00:40:32decisions and i thought the best advice which i liked was
00:40:36they said just be unpredictable, you're more
00:40:40likely to come to grief if you do the same thing all the time even with
00:40:44some kind of protection and so don't be too predictable because
00:40:48that's much much more difficult for them, many years ago read the booklet my
00:40:52father got on this subject and it told you how to drive if you
00:40:55were and it said in such a way as you never had to stop
00:40:59a red light, you should always approach it carefully, parts of west london where you don't
00:41:03stop a red light anyway,
00:41:04it was quite difficult to manage, and that's the other problem,
00:41:07that the advice is very sensible, it's very well intentioned, but it's quite hard
00:41:11to lead life like that, i was given mirror a stick to look
00:41:15underneath, i just feel it's ridiculous to do
00:41:18that, on the other hand lives were saved because of that,
00:41:22and i can still remember somebody in the northern office said about the the
00:41:26root that my children took to school and I found that
00:41:28chilling, no, it's very difficult,
00:41:32well, I don't think we've come up with any answers on this subject, it's a very difficult one
00:41:36and we need balance and we pray for the offer.
00:41:40um, whose anniversary comes up. the prime minister has published details of his
00:41:44contacts with manchester city's about owners. there's no evidence assessed
00:41:48any wrong doing on Mr. burnam's part, but does this just politicians need to be
00:41:52more of receiving hospitality, which makes them look fishy
00:41:56even when they are
00:41:57not?

00:43:49about what it's worth george, it's what you do with it. when i first started on
00:43:53my business i started with 50 pounds and an old car of
00:43:57pristained
00:43:57downville
00:44:03and that george was the start of everything, i worked, built and i
00:44:07turned it into this of course. lots along the way, no
00:44:11mistakes, just lessons. Let's see what your future looks like,
00:44:15George.

00:45:11"the prime minister has published details of his contact with Manchester City's Abu
00:45:15Dhabi owners after the club was found guilty of financial rule breaches involving
00:45:19more than 830 million pounds. They include a formal meeting with
00:45:23chairman Caldun Al Mubarak at the 20-21 investment Summit, but
00:45:27also generous hospitality at Magister City's Home
00:45:30Matches, where he held unminited conversations with the
00:45:33chairman as mayor of Greater Manchester, after initially calling the owners
00:45:37a huge partner and response many..." sawls falling short of
00:45:41condemnation, some of raised concerns of political interference
00:45:45in Manchester City's appeal. Mr. Burnam has repeatedly
00:45:48stated that any criminal behavior must be punished and said the judgment against the club
00:45:52is serious. There is no evidence just any wrong doing on the prime minister's
00:45:56part, but does this imply that politicians need to be more
00:46:00worry of hospitality from such investors which could
00:46:04lead speculation about motives and could such ties make
00:46:08them look fishy even when the... not well, I'm joined now by the
00:46:11former head of MI6, sir Richard Dear love. um, Sir
00:46:15Richard, thank you very much for joining me. I'm interested
00:46:19both in this question of politicians avoiding
00:46:23circumstances that could force them a way to make the
00:46:26wrong decision, because as Andy Burnham has
00:46:30taken hospitality from Manchester City,
00:46:34isn't it now harder for him to say, our relationship with the
00:46:38UAE is a fundamental and I feel
00:46:42that we should not worry about football club because the bigger
00:46:45picture if he says that now everyone says well that's just buse
00:46:49you went to few football matches and could
00:46:52position? yeah, I think the problem is more
00:46:56profound than that. if you rub shoulders with the
00:47:00rulers the Gulf states, they
00:47:02are consumate autocrats who
00:47:06expect to get their own way, and you need to be
00:47:10very careful, very cautious in how you deal with them. I
00:47:13mean,
00:47:14in my personal experience, I met most these people ok a long time ago,
00:47:18you're always being offered blandishments.
00:47:24"we have the strictest rules about refusing them, I
00:47:28mean, the classic example is who is walking around with the
00:47:32most expensive rolex on the rest, and
00:47:35you know these things are handed out like
00:47:38gifts, and I just hope that the prime minister
00:47:42was very cautious and very careful in how he dealt,
00:47:46particularly with Sheikh Mansor
00:47:48benzied, run who is vice president of..."
00:47:52abu Dhabi and runs the um Abu Dhabi United group which is the
00:47:56big investor in Manchester and
00:47:59Manchester City um football club
00:48:03and I mean you know they they
00:48:06have broken the rules they have I
00:48:10mean okay maybe I shouldn't make a prejudgment but it looks as though
00:48:14they've broken rules and they've cheated in terms of what is
00:48:18acceptable for the football
00:48:20league and they are appealing it, but
00:48:24don't we need to have a good relationship with the UAE, isn't the UAE an
00:48:27important partner for us both in your area of
00:48:31speciality, they're important investors in the
00:48:34UK, and I don't dispute that, but I mean they are also
00:48:38autocrats who expect to get their own way,
00:48:41and you need to
00:48:44distance yourself in terms of a personal
00:48:47relationship with these individuals, I'm not going to go into detail
00:48:51about you, experience what I know of other people, but I've
00:48:55sat down in front of lots of rather senior
00:48:59people in government right to the very top level,
00:49:03and had to sort of brief them and warn them when I was in office, okay, it's
00:49:07a long time ago, to be very cautious in the way that they conduct these
00:49:11relationships. Now, I'm not suggesting that the prime minister's done
00:49:14anything wrong, but there's an awful
00:49:18lot that one learns about in relation to
00:49:20Manchester, looks. well it it doesn't give off the
00:49:24right sort of vibes now in terms of his
00:49:27position, and you can do things that are
00:49:31unwise,
00:49:32that aren't technically wrong, can't you? so you can accept a free ticket and
00:49:35lavish hospitality, which other people may have taken,
00:49:39you can go a different circumstance to the royal box at
00:49:42Wimbledon, you might be given a watch, and there is point
00:49:46at which it goes from being harmless to being
00:49:50corrupt, and how do you jud?
00:49:52that point, you say no to
00:49:56everything except the relationship, you conduct the
00:49:59relationship as the representative of
00:50:02what you are,
00:50:04mean if you're the mayor of Manchester, you conduct
00:50:06it strictly as the mayor of Manchester, and if you
00:50:10accept any hospitality at all, it should be
00:50:14scrrupously recorded, and the circumstances in which
00:50:18you accepted it should be absolutely clear cut, there shouldn't be any.
00:50:22areas at all, okay, I think if you're in the intelligence and security
00:50:26community, you're at the extreme end of those rules and you have to
00:50:29be absolutely precise in what
00:50:33you, you, I've sat at dinners with
00:50:37other officials, sir Richard, I must go to my panel, but thank
00:50:40you very much, John, just a quick, you've got
00:50:43to say no to everything, haven't you, it's safeest, yes, and
00:50:47I certainly discovered when I was in the cabinet, there were people who wanted to make very nice
00:50:51offers and so they were suddenly... my friend, so I used to say, I'm really busy
00:50:55in this job, and why don't you invite after I've left the job, and you know
00:50:59none them ever did, but November
00:51:011997, a certain Egyptian businessman bought my football club, full football
00:51:05club, and he decided to invite me down this, I'd written some rather aggressive stuff in the
00:51:09fulum chronicle about him, and he asked if I shopped at Harreds and I said no,
00:51:13but if I wanted the best of course, you don't have a Harrord stord, here's
00:51:17a Harrord st, like any store card, but no bills, and I said, well,
00:51:21I'm not going to take it, and he said, no, you insult me, I said, I'm sorry, you insult
00:51:25me, I went back, told my wife about it, she said, get back
00:51:28down, but look, thing about Manchester is
00:51:32Richard Lees and Howard Bernstein were actually responsible for the early work,
00:51:35Manchester City,
00:51:36and I've got no brief for Manchester City, but the reality is that the amount of
00:51:40regeneration, including the metro station, outside the, all that was done before, you
00:51:44see that's the thing that concerns me, the UAE is a really important
00:51:47relationship, Bernham's taken hospitality, if he were to say, as we
00:51:51said over Alamam, that we didn't want to carry on with the prosecution
00:51:55because the bigger picture and the national interest everyone would say
00:51:59that's buse Burnham can't be trusted. Well, that's the danger, but I
00:52:02mean
00:52:03I I take face. farly what the prim said that he's done nothing
00:52:07wrong - but it's
00:52:08still not still not helpful that's
00:52:1270
00:52:13and we don't and we don't want the relationship damage isn't it the principle these tickets are
00:52:17quite hard to get i never took a single ticket to lords which
00:52:21i very much like or anything of that kind while summerset county cricket club i've
00:52:25always paid to summerset county cricket club i
00:52:29have to say don't forget manchester city in the second division not that long ago wasn't all that it's only it's only the
00:52:33last few years that they've been going but but the problem is
00:52:35it was a big package for the football club and for other developments and there
00:52:39was public money going into the
00:52:41development, manchester city has
00:52:44denied all wrong doing and says the ruling contains clear material errors, it has
00:52:48filed an appeal supported by what it describes irrefutable body of
00:52:52evidence, so time will tell, but i think our relationship with UAE is much
00:52:56more important than football club. um, that's all from me, up next
00:53:00is the one and only patrick christies, patrick,
00:53:02i may hand
00:53:03over to you momentarily early. but I'm sure you've got lots of excitements to tell us
00:53:07about this evening. Absolutely. Thank you very much, Jacob, great show. Right, loads on this
00:53:11evening. Andy Burnham, is there going to be a big Brexit betrayal? He's got himself into
00:53:15a little bit of a mess really when it comes to some really misinformation,
00:53:18ironically about Russia and Brexit. Now farage pledges to
00:53:22shut down the asylum system for five years, deport 90,00 people
00:53:26pretty much immediately, and also take sanctions against countries that
00:53:29refuse to take back foreign criminals. Ending voter
00:53:33ID to vote. need an id to buy a deck of camel blues
00:53:37down at Tesco's, but not to vote in this country under Andy Burnham, apparently, I think that is
00:53:41probably a sign that we are on course for early general election,
00:53:45I've got all of that and much more com your
00:53:47way.
00:53:52Today's outlook, cool, calm and completely
00:53:56horizontal. Boxed Aircon sponsors the weather on GB
00:54:00News. Evening, welcome to your latest weather update from the Met office
00:54:04here. GB News very mild tonight, also very windy
00:54:08for some and the mild blustery weather continues tomorrow, there'll be some sunshine, but
00:54:12there will also be a spell of heavy rain moving through, thanks to this little
00:54:16area of low pressure, it's intensifying, developing as it moves up towards the
00:54:20northwest, that's where the strongest winds will be getting quite gusty and windy
00:54:24this evening across northern Ireland with a spell of heavy rain moving through here and
00:54:27turning very windy indeed across the highlands of Scotland and particularly the western
00:54:31ies through the early hours that spell of rainal sweep through the central. and
00:54:35eventually turn up in western parts of Wales. For much of England or Wales though,
00:54:39just a dank murky drizzly old night, but very mild temperatures hauling
00:54:43up at 14-15 degrees, so it won't be a cold start to Tuesday. Could be quite
00:54:46a wet start, however, the spell of rain edging its way through,
00:54:50generally dry over the midlands, much of eastern England, but there's that
00:54:54area of rain. It could be quite heavy in places this rain, particularly over parts of
00:54:58northwest England. The wet and windy weather sweeps through Northern Ireland, but then we're left
00:55:02with showers coming in for Tuesday morning. rain by the time we
00:55:06get to Russia should be pulling away from the east coast of Scotland so skies
00:55:10brightening pretty rapidly here, but then more showers packing into western
00:55:14Scotland a brisk wind, the winds won't be as strong as they will be overnight, but
00:55:17nevertheless quite noticeable that spell of rain then works its way across east anglia and
00:55:21the southeast, doesn't bring a huge amount of rain, doesn't last all that long, and
00:55:25look at that, the afternoon largely sunny across the south, further north, there'll be sunny
00:55:29spells, but there will also be some blustery gusty showers,
00:55:33still mild temperatures and the mids to high teens, maybe over 20
00:55:37celsius across the southeast, turning a little cooler Tuesday
00:55:41night into Wednesday morning, a little bit fresh at first thing, but generally dry
00:55:45fine day across much the south, some early morning mist and fog, but then more
00:55:49wet and very windy weather potentially coming into the northwest, need to
00:55:52keep an eye on that again elsewhere, generally dry and bright and
00:55:56still quite mild with temperatures perhaps up to 20
00:55:59celsius. Today's outlook,
00:56:03cool, calm and... completely horizontal,
