00:09:47Truth is not a matter of opinion, but of persistent verification and
00:09:51responsibility. In times of
00:09:54accuracy. In times of noise, we choose clarity, because our job
00:09:58is not only to follow events, but to understand them, to ask
00:10:01the right questions, and to seek answers that can change
00:10:05perspectives. An informed citizen means a stronger
00:10:08society. I am Tina Kosor Grizelj, and you are watching N1 Croatia.
00:10:34Dear viewers, good day, I am Marinela Ruškovački, and the
00:10:38daily review is starting, here's what we
00:10:39bring you.
00:10:44Croatia celebrates Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian
00:10:47Defenders, the 31st anniversary of the military-police
00:10:51operation Storm, in Knin numerous defenders, citizens, and state officials.
00:10:57Sinj horses in
00:11:01the river, greetings to
00:11:03the homeland, greetings,
00:11:07Joso Šarić, today
00:11:09is a day of celebration, but on the other hand, also a day of remembrance for all
00:11:13those who gave their lives,
00:11:17this is your
00:11:18land.
00:11:25Aleksandar Vučić called the arrival of Montenegrin representatives in Knin a betrayal and
00:11:29this year called Operation Storm a crime, a quick response came from Knin.
00:11:32odgovoreno.
00:11:35Due to drought and high temperatures, the Krško nuclear power plant will start reducing
00:11:39its reactor power tonight and will operate at reduced power at
00:11:4280%.
00:11:46Gianni Infantino arrived in Morocco for a crisis meeting with
00:11:49world football organization leaders after the collapse of his plan
00:11:53to sell part of the commercial rights for the World Cup, due to harsh
00:11:56criticism, his new mandate at the helm of FIFA is also being questioned.
00:12:14Today, Croatia marks Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day,
00:12:17the Day of Croatian Defenders, and the 31st anniversary of
00:12:20military-police operation
00:12:24was held again this year in Knin, where one of the key victories
00:12:28in the Homeland
00:12:29War is commemorated.
00:12:37Almost 200,000 members of the Croatian army and police
00:12:40participated in Operation Storm, who in 85 hours
00:12:44liberated more than 11,000
00:12:46kilometers of occupied territory.
00:12:49The military-police operation Storm began on August 4
00:12:53and lasted until August 7, 1995.
00:12:56The Croatian army and police liberated the occupied
00:12:59areas of the Republic of Croatia under the control of rebellious Serbs, on
00:13:03which the so-called Serbian Krajina was established.
00:13:0610,400 square kilometers or
00:13:1018.4% of the total area of Croatia were liberated. In
00:13:14the operation, 243 Croatian defenders were killed,
00:13:181,430 were wounded, while two
00:13:21are still considered missing.
00:13:30And the military-police operation Storm began on August 4
00:13:33and lasted until August 7, 1995.
00:13:37Numerous defenders, of course, primarily citizens, but also
00:13:42Knin, where the 31st anniversary of
00:13:45this action was celebrated. All this, all the impressions were gathered by
00:13:48Katarina Plantak.
00:13:50This is the land. when
00:13:53my father goes
00:13:57and my father,
00:14:01I remain
00:14:01on
00:14:08it. My father died as a Croatian defender, I was
00:14:12wounded, my grandfather died, uh, I'm from
00:14:15Stankovci, I watched uh how they burned our
00:14:18houses, how they, uh, those
00:14:21orgies in our villages, then I
00:14:24said: "I saw the gates of hell, but what
00:14:27doesn't break you, strengthens you, uh,
00:14:31then I got an even greater motivation to return to my
00:14:34village, to return to where I was born, and a
00:14:38man without his roots, without his history, is nothing."
00:14:42The story of Colonel Mamut is just one of many that could be heard
00:14:46in Knin, while the 31st anniversary of the Storm was commemorated.
00:14:49Among those gathered were defenders, members of their
00:14:53families, and citizens from all parts of
00:14:55Croatia, for the first time since the Storm. While I was in the Storm, he was
00:14:58a participant in the Storm. Yes, I was a driver, I drove soldiers,
00:15:02ammunition, I am very proud of that, I was glad
00:15:05to be there, it makes me happy. In my heart
00:15:08today there is great pride, my dad was also
00:15:12uh in the Homeland War on the front lines
00:15:16and that makes today's day even more
00:15:20significant to me, because in principle uh he fought for
00:15:23me, he fought for... this country, he fought for all of us
00:15:27and here I am, today I came here to celebrate
00:15:30today's day with everyone else. For many, coming to
00:15:33Knin is a tradition, and memories of the Storm are now passed on to those
00:15:37who did not experience the war, from generation to generation. We are from
00:15:41Slavonski Brod, we are on vacation in Petrečani
00:15:44and we came here today to take advantage of the day to show
00:15:47them how much we can contribute to keeping
00:15:51this story alive from day to day. Our
00:15:54military defended our country.
00:15:59I am proud of it. After the end of the ceremonial program, motorcyclists,
00:16:02cyclists, and marathon participants also arrived in the city.
00:16:06Among them are numerous Croatian veterans who
00:16:09every year in this way pay tribute to their
00:16:12comrades-in-arms, volunteers of the Homeland War, a man from Baranja, an exile
00:16:15at one time. I haven't seen my parents for three years, I haven't seen my home for six years.
00:16:19integration dominance, if I told you that I am waiting for a call for hip
00:16:22surgery, you know, I did all the anesthesiology, everything, I'm just waiting for a call,
00:16:26with every knee and hip I endured the last 4
00:16:29km, I mean, that must be something in your head and
00:16:33heart. The August sun did not prevent visitors from spending
00:16:37the whole day in the streets of Knin, refreshment was
00:16:40sought in the shade, with water, military beans, and
00:16:43ćevapi, and a good mood was
00:16:45not lacking.
00:16:48Guys, is it hot? Well, it's good, we're enduring, it's a little
00:16:51hot, but we're used to it. Madam, is
00:16:54it hot? Very, it's great, a real
00:16:58military atmosphere. History was not read from books today,
00:17:02it was told by those who survived it. That's why
00:17:05Knin this year was much more than a place to commemorate an
00:17:09anniversary. Katarina Plantak, N1,
00:17:12Knin.
00:17:20And in Knin is also my colleague Vesela
00:17:22Šegvić Kordić, who has been following everything that happened there
00:17:26since the morning, whom I now greet. Vesela, you have been following
00:17:29the events in Knin related to this 31st
00:17:33anniversary of Operation Storm, to which the entire state leadership has once again arrived.
00:17:37What are their messages this
00:17:38year?
00:17:41Yes, the entire state leadership arrived in Knin again this year, of course
00:17:45with Croatian veterans, families of the deceased
00:17:49and others who decided to visit Knin on this day. At the
00:17:52central ceremony, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Speaker of Parliament
00:17:56Gordan Jandroković, and President
00:18:00Zoran Milanović had the opportunity to speak. What we can say is that
00:18:04all three were united in one thing, that the military-police operation
00:18:08Storm was a legitimate, just, liberating
00:18:11operation that had to be carried out so that we could have the state we
00:18:15have today, and that no revisionism can hide that
00:18:18fact, no matter how much some people want to. They mostly
00:18:21emphasized, therefore, our neighbors Serbs, but some
00:18:25here in the Republic of Croatia say that they
00:18:29will not succeed. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković in his speech
00:18:32decided to use the opportunity to say that
00:18:35there will be amendments in autumn. of the law, specifically regarding
00:18:39the increase of veterans' pensions, and what
00:18:42President Zoran Milanović emphasized in his speech
00:18:46is that it was a city war, so
00:18:50he again, as in most of his speeches, referred to
00:18:53Bosnia and Herzegovina, saying that the military-police operation also
00:18:57significantly influenced the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, that we should
00:19:00think about them, so that two countries were actually liberated
00:19:03in a way. So
00:19:06I suggest in the continuation that we listen to what the Prime Minister,
00:19:09President, Vice President of the Croatian Parliament, and also the Chief
00:19:12of Staff of the Armed Forces Tikovir Kundid,
00:19:16around whom there were disputes in recent days, said. We know that
00:19:19there was talk about it, that is, disagreements about
00:19:23the Paris parade, that is, sending Croatian armed
00:19:26forces to the parade in Paris. So let's listen to
00:19:29the statements. The courage of Croatian
00:19:33defenders, their love for their homeland, and their readiness to
00:19:37make the greatest sacrifice for their people
00:19:40enabled us to live today in a free, democratic,
00:19:44independent state. From genuine gratitude for that
00:19:48precious blood, the achieved creation, arises
00:19:51constant inspiration for all those who have a strong
00:19:55and proud Croatia in their hearts.
00:19:58The military-police operation Storm was an undeniably
00:20:02just and legitimate liberation action.
00:20:05The final critical blow that
00:20:07Croatian soldiers and police used to break Greater Serbian
00:20:10aggression, which liberated most of the temporarily
00:20:14occupied Croatian territory and widely
00:20:17opened the way to the end of the Homeland War. There is
00:20:20no revisionism that can dispute that historical
00:20:23fact, no matter how much some try, in our
00:20:27neighborhood, but unfortunately in
00:20:29Croatia.
00:20:38Happy Victory Day,
00:20:40happy Day of Croatian Defenders, and Homeland Thanksgiving
00:20:43Day. National interests, these
00:20:46interests oblige us to look at ourselves, to
00:20:50be loyal to others, decent, if possible,
00:20:53not to deal too much with others,
00:20:56for example, what do I know,
00:20:58Serbia,
00:21:00a neighboring country that was the sponsor of this rebellion in
00:21:04Croatia, and when we celebrate Victory
00:21:06Day, we do it in Knin, but it
00:21:10wasn't like that immediately in the first year and it wasn't a practice until 2001.
00:21:14In 2001, continuous celebrations began
00:21:17in Knin, but Knin was not really
00:21:21the heart of the rebellion against the Croatian state and the right of the Croatian people
00:21:24to have their own national state within its internationally
00:21:28recognized borders. That rebellion came from Belgrade and today
00:21:31when in recent days and years and all the time
00:21:35we hear the same nonsense, some will say
00:21:38revisionism of history. Croatia is the only country in the
00:21:42European Union and NATO at the moment,
00:21:45whose army is led by people who were young men
00:21:4830 years ago with serious, unprecedented,
00:21:52now then military, war experience
00:21:55in Calais in real combat, no
00:21:59chief of general staff of any NATO
00:22:01country has led a battalion in
00:22:05an attack, every major knows what a battalion in an attack means
00:22:08in a combat exercise, let alone in real wartime circumstances, our
00:22:12chief of general staff Tihomir Kundid is and he
00:22:15is the only one like that in the European Union and NATO and among
00:22:19others." But not only because of that, he has and will have my
00:22:22trust.
00:22:26Operation Storm was a brilliant military victory,
00:22:29a legitimate liberation operation, and the crown
00:22:33of Croatia's fight for freedom. Under the leadership
00:22:36of the first Croatian president, Dr. Franjo Tuđman,
00:22:39Croatian veterans, soldiers, and police officers in just
00:22:43a few days liberated most of the occupied territory
00:22:47and enabled the return of exiles to their
00:22:50homes. Operation Storm saved Bihać from
00:22:54a threatening humanitarian catastrophe, changed
00:22:57the balance of power in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and opened
00:23:00the way to peace and the Dayton Agreement. For
00:23:04Croatia, after Operation Storm, the successful
00:23:07and peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube region
00:23:11was also carried out, by which Croatia completed
00:23:15the process of its territorial integrity
00:23:18and the return of temporarily framed areas into the constitutional and legal order
00:23:22of the country. These historical
00:23:25which our pride rests,
00:23:29peaceful, dignified,
00:23:31unyielding.
00:23:37In recent weeks, Vesela, we have witnessed the great tensions between the
00:23:41President and the Government regarding the sending of Croatian soldiers to
00:23:45Paris to commemorate Bastille Day,
00:23:48at the center of which was the Chief of Staff Tihomir
00:23:52Kundid. The relationship between the Prime Minister and the President has long been strained even without that,
00:23:55was that felt today in Knin?
00:23:58No, it was not felt in Knin today,
00:24:01Defense Minister Ivan Anušić
00:24:05says they are always on good terms, that they
00:24:08are good with Kundid, but that would not be said at least from
00:24:12what I managed to see from the morning in
00:24:15the protocol, so in some contact with government
00:24:19representatives and directly with the Prime Minister Tihomir Kundid was not there
00:24:22all the time, so from the departure here from the square for laying
00:24:26wreaths to the central ceremony that took place at the NK
00:24:30Dinara stadium, Tihomir Kundid was in the company of his
00:24:33boss, so President Zoran Milanović, for their
00:24:37relations we can say that they are still good, so that they are firm.
00:24:42Exactly in his speech at Dinara's
00:24:45stadium, President Zoran Milanović emphasized that
00:24:49their relations are very good and that there are
00:24:52no disagreements and that it will remain that way.
00:24:56Let's see, that is, let's hear what Prime Minister Andrej
00:25:00Plenković said about all this.
00:25:07There will always be tension, politics is like that, we cannot all think the same
00:25:11and it would not be good if we all thought the same, uh, the key
00:25:14to that is that in key and important matters, both General Kundid
00:25:17and the Prime Minister and the President "we must make decisions and
00:25:21we make decisions that are important and key for the development and strengthening of the armed
00:25:25forces of the Republic of Croatia, they are the most important here, no one individual is important here, we are all
00:25:29temporary and we will all at some point go our separate ways
00:25:32elsewhere, but the armed forces must remain stronger, stronger when we
00:25:36leave this position to give it to someone who will continue
00:25:39to equip, modernize, strengthen and empower our armed
00:25:42forces."
00:25:46"Did you talk to Mr. Kundid today? We greeted each other."
00:25:59Thank you very much, yes, we also saw the situation that occurred at Dinara stadium. when the
00:26:02President Zoran Milanović was announced,
00:26:06when he went to sit in his place between him and
00:26:09Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, one of
00:26:12the people who is responsible for raising the flag at
00:26:16Knin Fortress, Robert Puja, the President
00:26:20of the Republic, on that occasion, when he went to sit in his
00:26:23place, he only shook his hand and then sat down, and practically
00:26:27didn't even look at the Prime Minister. So that's a scenario we see almost
00:26:30every year here in Knin. I am now talking to
00:26:34the mayor of Knin, Mario Ćaćić. Does every
00:26:38anniversary bother you? in some kind of tone
00:26:41where the prime minister, the president are arguing, do you think that
00:26:44it should perhaps come to an end? Well, I believe that
00:26:48it would be much nicer if they came together and
00:26:51jointly showed unity, as our veterans
00:26:55showed unity in '95 when we liberated
00:26:58our city Knin.
00:27:01Uh, I have to... be honest, I didn't notice any
00:27:05friction between them, this
00:27:07time, well, I was part of the protocol, so I couldn't, I didn't
00:27:11notice any friction, well, they haven't shaken hands for a while, we see
00:27:15bickering in the media
00:27:18and one against the other, each holding
00:27:21their own side, do you think that should stop already, or
00:27:25at least at such events, they should say hello and
00:27:28shake hands, well, in any case, I agree that it should...
00:27:32be stopped already, mm, I'm afraid that these
00:27:36conflicts, that this persistent
00:27:39conflict, causes harm to our entire
00:27:43country, especially on a day like this, maybe it's time to
00:27:46sit down and talk so that some
00:27:50public conflicts between the two of them stop, well, today it's really
00:27:53hot, well, we are melting now even though it's passed
00:27:575:30 PM, are you
00:28:00satisfied with the whole day and how it went? as well as with the organization
00:28:04well, we saw that some veterans wish for
00:28:07some changes, so are you perhaps for changes regarding
00:28:11the program itself, well, we see these high temperatures every year
00:28:15getting higher and higher, so uh I have to say that I am satisfied with
00:28:19the large number of people who have been here all day
00:28:22in the city of Knin, perhaps surprisingly more than we
00:28:26initially expected, perhaps it's also the result of the concert
00:28:30by Marko Perković Thompson
00:28:32which was held in Šibenik, so some people from the concert immediately came
00:28:36here to Knin and participated in
00:28:39the program itself. I am very satisfied with how the program itself
00:28:43went, so everything we prepared for practically a month
00:28:47all together, not just the city, but the vast majority
00:28:50of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense,
00:28:53the Ministry of Croatian Veterans, this
00:28:56everything that was planned today was carried out, I can say, without
00:29:00any mistakes and exactly as planned, so I can say that I am
00:29:04sat, I am satisfied with the entire program, and complaints
00:29:07about changes, every year we introduce some
00:29:10changes, just so that the program isn't the same, this year there were
00:29:14some programs and changes in our city
00:29:17program, for example, we introduced a new, a new thing that
00:29:21we plan to uh make a tradition
00:29:24for the future, namely a festival of children's patriotic
00:29:28songs, it was very well attended, very
00:29:31positive reactions were... there and that was two days before the storm itself,
00:29:34now it was on Monday mm on the
00:29:38day of commemoration August 5th, the whole
00:29:42program revolves around one point, and that is 9:43
00:29:45minutes when in 1995,
00:29:48exactly on August 5th, the flag, the Croatian flag, was raised
00:29:52on the Knin fortress, and the whole program always revolves
00:29:56around that point, we never move that one, but
00:29:59other things can be moved around it. This year
00:30:03the mass was held earlier before the main event, so
00:30:07we can say, well, that caused some
00:30:10as far as I see positive reactions, especially in the veteran
00:30:13population, because it was a more decent time before
00:30:17the great heat when the mass was held, so that when
00:30:20it is practically easier to breathe, mornings are much cooler, I have to
00:30:23ask you, you have been mayor for two terms
00:30:26in a row, before that you were also deputy
00:30:29mayor, you have been here for many years, and Serbs
00:30:33here have been living in coexistence for many
00:30:37both Croats and Serbs are your citizens, how do you view these messages coming
00:30:40from Serbia, specifically from Aleksandar Vučić who absolutely refuses
00:30:44to acknowledge this storm? Well, I think he does that
00:30:48because of his political situation there in Serbia, every
00:30:51year we witness such statements, they
00:30:55don't benefit us at all, they bring no benefit, but also
00:30:59no harm.
