00:01:10Good morning, once again you are watching New Day, it's time to review
00:01:13the press, our guest is the president of NUNS, Željko Bodrožić. Željko, good
00:01:17morning, thank you for being here. Nova writes today
00:01:20about the new IRI survey.
00:01:24So there are several questions, there are several findings that are
00:01:28important, let's start with that. Uh, that
00:01:3168% of respondents would very likely vote,
00:01:3415% probably, 49% say that
00:01:38Serbia is going in the wrong direction, 41% say it's going in the right
00:01:41direction, this roughly matches last year's results
00:01:45of the same survey, 46% of citizens
00:01:48would vote for the student list, 40
00:01:51say they wouldn't, 42 support student
00:01:55protests, 41 do not support them. What do these results
00:01:59indicate to you? "What is visible to the naked eye, that
00:02:02Serbia is deeply divided, that it is
00:02:06the result of this government which has done everything to divide
00:02:09this society in that way, to
00:02:11infuriate both sides, so
00:02:15it is something that is expected, although I think
00:02:18that the percentages of dissatisfaction on this side will be higher and higher
00:02:22of that, so
00:02:26the base of votes for that student list, it will be, I believe,
00:02:29even..." even greater as soon as these elections
00:02:32are called, as soon as it means, do you see a scenario in which these results can be
00:02:36translated into an election result? Well, I think that they will be this, now
00:02:40someone will say that I am an excessive optimist, but I think that the difference
00:02:44will be even greater between that
00:02:46so-called student list or some kind of
00:02:50united opposition bloc
00:02:53against the side
00:02:55of, as it is, United Serbia of Aleksandar Vučić, and
00:02:59I think that... this ratio will be, I believe, like in
00:03:02Hungary when the elections were decided and when Orbán
00:03:06finally fell. And how do you assess
00:03:09the efforts of the authorities to improve their results and the kind of
00:03:13campaign they are conducting even though elections have not been called, for example, with these
00:03:17festivities under tents, and various measures for pensioners
00:03:20and other citizens, short-term
00:03:24and so on? How much do you think these mechanisms
00:03:27can somehow overturn these numbers?
00:03:30It's difficult to overturn them. What is undeniable
00:03:33is that the government, or rather Aleksandar Vučić, has managed
00:03:37to, to some extent, consolidate its ranks,
00:03:41meaning to stop this
00:03:44erosion. It doesn't have that counter-effect
00:03:47now to regain those things. That's what I think is a problem for the
00:03:51government, that with these actions of theirs,
00:03:55with tents and folk festivities,
00:03:58it's trying to... ...to
00:04:01unite its voters, to cheer them up,
00:04:04which is the most important thing, because many, even after
00:04:08the canopy and the first protests, saw
00:04:11that things were going in a different direction than
00:04:14what Vučić and his regime would have wanted
00:04:17and slowly distanced themselves from
00:04:20their leader, and that soft electorate of the progressives
00:04:24which came at some point when they came to
00:04:27power, is now, in my opinion, scattered and
00:04:31this is now squeezing a dry fruit to somehow
00:04:35maintain that, so to
00:04:38speak, winning spirit on their side and
00:04:42to try to enter those elections, whenever they may
00:04:45be, if they even happen, I don't know, but to enter, to some extent,
00:04:48ready with the hope that they can somehow
00:04:51remain in power. So that's one aspect. The other aspect is that
00:04:55they expect from the other side
00:04:58stratification. that this united
00:05:02block of the opposition in the
00:05:05broadest sense of the word, uh, will fragment.
00:05:09Now, there's a question related to that, uh, that... So,
00:05:1241% are those, those who support the protests,
00:05:1641% of them believe that only students should
00:05:20run, 29% students and
00:05:22opposition on separate lists, and 22% believe
00:05:26that a joint list of students and the opposition should run. Are
00:05:30these numbers, in your opinion, a relevant
00:05:32indicator? Do they show what the election result
00:05:36would be in all three of these scenarios, although we can say that
00:05:39this last one is the least likely because there won't be joint lists, by all
00:05:43accounts. Well, what psychologically pulls
00:05:46the most is that one list, whatever it's
00:05:50called, a united front, that referendum
00:05:53atmosphere, it will certainly bring many people
00:05:56who are apathetic,
00:05:58undecided, to the polls, and that's the winning
00:06:02combination. Everything that I really try
00:06:06in my appearances to defend
00:06:08this opposition that has been fighting for so
00:06:12long in impossible conditions, there are many mistakes,
00:06:15but somehow they are
00:06:19unfairly purged in a way, but this is a
00:06:22wave that carries everything before it, and now you have to be
00:06:26rational and smart and give way at
00:06:29this moment to that student
00:06:32movement, so to speak, which is obviously, according to all
00:06:36surveys, and you don't have to go out
00:06:39and look for surveys if you see in your
00:06:42environment that the situation is changing, that there were always
00:06:46some when it was time for elections, for some
00:06:48changes, they would say, I have no one to
00:06:52vote for, I have no, I don't trust,
00:06:55the opposition politicians and so on and so forth, that has
00:06:59changed now, because youth has brought some
00:07:01new quality that people feel
00:07:05and I think
00:07:08that should be rationally used at this moment,
00:07:11everything that creates noise, uh, benefits
00:07:15the regime, meaning two lists, three lists, already
00:07:19by itself, but it seems at least now at this moment that it's somehow
00:07:22going in that direction, because uh, the pro-EU
00:07:26opposition has said that it will run in its own coalition.
00:07:29Yesterday, Aleksandar Jovanović Ćuta said in our program that they are running in
00:07:33the elections, most likely it is going in that direction to be in a coalition with
00:07:37Miroslav Aleksić, Parandilović, Dr. Milić from Niš,
00:07:40then there is that right-wing bloc.
00:07:43for which we still don't know in what form and how it will come out, but it will probably
00:07:47come out. That's the situation. Do you have
00:07:50an understanding for such decisions and their
00:07:53logic? Well, I do. I understand that someone who
00:07:57has invested themselves in
00:08:00founding a party for so many years under
00:08:03these impossible conditions of existing on the political
00:08:06scene cannot simply withdraw, but again, I cite
00:08:10the example of Hungary. So, as the elections approached, as
00:08:14it became evident that Péter Magyar had that
00:08:17necessary majority, that they were
00:08:20like that, in that period before the elections,
00:08:23they slowly started to withdraw, these relevant
00:08:26opposition Hungarian parties, starting with the
00:08:30mayor of Budapest who won as the candidate of that
00:08:34green-left front of theirs. So I believe, as it approaches,
00:08:38that's what an analogy can be drawn
00:08:41with... with the year 2000, when, as
00:08:45those September elections approached,
00:08:48that broad movement was constituted, and
00:08:52then those young people who were then part of
00:08:55Otpor managed to unite
00:08:58everyone, and those who were making
00:09:00noise tried to, meaning the SPO
00:09:04tried, a party with
00:09:07a long tradition, with a large number of votes, it failed
00:09:11in that referendum atmosphere regardless of... the fact that
00:09:14I don't know, a couple of years before that it had 500,000
00:09:18votes. So one needs to be now, I'm not
00:09:21in the shoes of these leading opposition members, but one needs to
00:09:25be wise, rational, see what
00:09:28brings more and what
00:09:31takes away. I think it is important for all of us who live in
00:09:35these impossible conditions for all these years, the goal is to achieve
00:09:38victory, that some things are crucial.
00:09:42Well, for this society, for us to change, to
00:09:45make some progress, will come
00:09:49after that, and that stratification into right,
00:09:52left and so on, I think that at this
00:09:55moment it is important to have
00:09:59your own views, to discuss them, that we don't agree on that,
00:10:02but at this moment the battle for
00:10:06change, not only of the regime, but also of this
00:10:10life that has been imposed on us in the last decade
00:10:14or so, is a priority.
00:10:17There is one finding in the survey that concerns the media that is
00:10:19interesting. Uh, television as a source
00:10:22of information fell from 47%, which was
00:10:25last year, to 36% this
00:10:28year. It seems to me that in 2020 it even went over
00:10:3160% of television as the most frequent source
00:10:35of information. Social networks increased from
00:10:3816% last year to
00:10:4125% this year. So social networks are growing as
00:10:44a primary source of information, television is falling.
00:10:47This is not a small drop. What do you attribute that
00:10:50to? Well, to the fact that citizens have lost confidence
00:10:54in traditional media. They had it for
00:10:57what most media broadcast and how
00:11:01they uh manipulate
00:11:04with their viewers, listeners,
00:11:08readers, and especially when I talk about television, most uh televisions are
00:11:11captured, and it started with the corona
00:11:14virus, that people started to turn more and
00:11:18more to other sources of information.
00:11:21With these protests, I think it's
00:11:24explicit. Yes, so you think it has to do with political events, yes,
00:11:28yes, it has to do with it, now you see in these places, in my
00:11:32Kikinda, you have a cable system in which
00:11:35SBB has N1 and Nova, but all those who
00:11:38live in villages, ever since total was abolished, they are
00:11:42uh, limited to what the government
00:11:46broadcasts to them, and so over time they realized that they can
00:11:49watch my guest appearance on YouTube
00:11:53tomorrow. So, it's something that has
00:11:57forced older people who were not familiar with new technology
00:12:00to look for a new source of
00:12:03information. Now those who are correct
00:12:06and professional are suffering, and it is being imposed that all televisions are manipulating
00:12:10something, so I want to ask you, is that good or are these numbers
00:12:14good or bad? Everything is bad when confidence
00:12:17in an important profession,
00:12:21journalism, is lost, when we are at the bottom.
00:12:24It's like, in terms of
00:12:27people's trust, I don't feel
00:12:30guilty about that, but it is a fact that it is so, it is
00:12:34bad because it is necessary
00:12:37that first we, as journalists, be defenders
00:12:40of the public interest, second, that the people who are consumers trust us,
00:12:44and there is a lot of talk about local media lately, about
00:12:47the rapid establishment
00:12:51of various local media. Nuns just published
00:12:54today's text which says that local Informer
00:12:57rumors are worse than Informer itself. How many of them are there
00:13:00currently and what is their influence considering these numbers, but also
00:13:04considering the election campaign? Well, there are
00:13:07quite a few. We are now looking, there are
00:13:10many who are working illegally, there is no
00:13:13REM Council, there is no one to legalize them
00:13:17as new media, but they are working, and even the President
00:13:20of the state is a guest, even though he is also the guardian of the constitution and
00:13:24laws. "But that's what's bad
00:13:27in this terminal phase of this
00:13:30regime, yet another bad thing,
00:13:34that this uh nastiness, this hate speech that
00:13:36is quite explicit, is being brought down to the local
00:13:40level. You had many, most of the media locally
00:13:43are under the direct control of the regime, but
00:13:46some are still trying to somehow stay within
00:13:50certain conventions, to respect the code as
00:13:54much as possible, they cheer, uh, how should
00:13:58I say, they make Vučić an idol
00:14:01and so on, but there wasn't such a negative campaign, now they have
00:14:05turned that around and poured evil all over those small places, there
00:14:09they are now reading grades, uh, of kids who are
00:14:12in protest
00:14:15against this regime, meaning no means are chosen, that will leave
00:14:19far-reaching consequences, because bad blood
00:14:22has now entered every pore. "And now on
00:14:26those locals we see those small informers
00:14:29who pollute the public space who do not choose
00:14:33methods or words to disgust
00:14:36the opponents of the regime, I say it is dangerous and we simply, that is a huge
00:14:40task that will be before both the media community and before
00:14:44this new REM council, right, because they were talking precisely about
00:14:47the issue of local media as an important issue that awaits them, the president has not yet
00:14:51been elected, so provided that one is elected.
00:14:55How much can, how important a role can that council play
00:14:58precisely on the issue of all those local media? Well, it should
00:15:02play an important role, the law
00:15:06allows them to regulate
00:15:08this space of
00:15:12electronic media, however, we already see in two
00:15:15meetings that the REM Council has not succeeded, as
00:15:19we assumed, these four members who are
00:15:23so to speak under the control of the ruling
00:15:27SNS regime, do not want to truly
00:15:30enter into a discussion, to try to do
00:15:33something, but it is obvious to them that they just care about
00:15:37creating the illusion that something is functioning
00:15:41in our society to get some points for Serbia's
00:15:45European path, but
00:15:48essentially, this REM council with this
00:15:51composition, these four independent members
00:15:55truly, without these others, cannot do
00:15:58anything. So they can now be instruments in the hands of these
00:16:02if they somehow succumb to pressure for that constitution
00:16:06to be carried out. Finally, for the president and
00:16:09vice-president to be elected, but they themselves are
00:16:12aware, I believe, that after that their role
00:16:16is no longer important, because that ninth member is awaited, who will probably
00:16:19also be under the administration of the progressives,
00:16:23so elections will be held sooner or later
00:16:27in the near future, so I don't believe that even if they are constituted,
00:16:31they can make any qualitative changes in
00:16:33the field of electronic media. And finally, the site.
00:16:38yesterday published the news that based on
00:16:40153 completed calls for co-financing of media
00:16:44content for this year, funds totaling
00:16:471.84 billion
00:16:50dinars were distributed. How was the money allocated in short? As
00:16:54before, so for the last
00:16:5510 years
00:16:59that system of co-financing media projects
00:17:02has been abused. That's a legal
00:17:06drainage of public
00:17:09funds. So, in competitions,
00:17:13money is allocated for compliant media that are under
00:17:16control. We in Kikinda gave up 11
00:17:19years ago, generally, to put in the effort to
00:17:23write projects, to submit anything at the
00:17:26municipal level, because we already saw that they do not
00:17:30want to, in that sense, approve
00:17:33our project, but that the distribution simply happens
00:17:37and it's well-known in Kikinda and other places, the SNS coordinator
00:17:40comes, brings a list to the commission, the commission itself is already
00:17:43composed of people who are
00:17:47uh, sent by the regime just to fulfill that
00:17:50formality, that there is some commission, that there is some law.
00:17:54That's just money laundering, taking money, so
00:17:57Informer, Srpski Telegraf, they take from local
00:18:00self-governments everywhere a small amount, but with the system of small
00:18:04numbers, they reach billions, and only from
00:18:07those local funds can the owner,
00:18:10editor, and of Informer, Srpski
00:18:13Telegraf, Kurir, pay their inevitable
00:18:16fines, as they break the law and code every day. Thank you
00:18:20very much, Željko, for this conversation. This was the president of NUNS, Željko
00:18:24Bodrožić. Here's what Forbes Serbia writes about today:

00:25:31In the Ibar gorge, along the stretch from Maglič to Ušće, fires broke
00:25:35out in several locations. Fires are burning in forests and low
00:25:39vegetation above the highway on the slopes and along the railway on
00:25:43the right bank of the Ibar. Extinguishing is extremely difficult due to the inaccessible
00:25:46terrain. Our Nenad Božović is there. Nenad, what is the situation this
00:25:50morning?
00:25:54Well, this morning the situation has not changed much compared to
00:25:57yesterday. Perhaps some
00:26:00fires in the meantime
00:26:02have been extinguished or localized, but it is still burning
00:26:06above Ušće and about 20 km
00:26:09upstream, downstream, pardon, towards
00:26:12Kraljevo, and mostly these are coniferous
00:26:16forests, which, for example, yesterday during the day was not the case, first it was
00:26:19low vegetation next to the railway and
00:26:22along the right bank of the Ibar, then
00:26:26during the evening it spread to coniferous forests, we are in one
00:26:30such forest above
00:26:32firefighters Varošica in... so now we will try with the camera to show you here
00:26:35it is being defended so that it does not spread
00:26:38further, because we saw, we saw with backpacks carrying
00:26:42water so that they could make that
00:26:46ring so that it does not spread, but I think you can
00:26:49see on our camera
00:26:51that the fire continues to burn and
00:26:54if the wind starts to blow, the situation can change
00:26:58very quickly and become very dangerous then it means
00:27:02that... "it would spread to parts
00:27:05where there was no fire, about what the
00:27:09situation is in the Ibar valley, what was burning, we are talking to Goran Nikolić
00:27:13ecological activist and mountaineer, you are from Ušće, you know
00:27:17this area very well, you were in the field all day yesterday, how does this situation seem to you, well yes, yesterday
00:27:20when they told me that the Ibar valley was burning, I got in
00:27:24and went down about 12 13 km down the Ibar, everywhere I saw
00:27:27about ten fires on the other side of the Ibar." above
00:27:31the railway, so mostly they were in residential
00:27:34areas, although there were some places where there were
00:27:37houses, I personally participated in extinguishing,
00:27:41preventing a village of Cijerija from burning, where
00:27:45a lot of young people organized, relatives of those people came
00:27:48who have houses there, and we put out the fire, so when you go out
00:27:52to a hill, you could see the whole valley down to Magliš,
00:27:5630-40 km, everything was smoke and everything was in fires, meaning that the smoke
00:27:59reached until this... morning even to Kraljevo which is 50 km from here, which
00:28:03means that the wind probably caused problems during the night,
00:28:06well, fortunately there was no wind yesterday, so the fire was burning, but
00:28:10last night a colder air started flowing, so it is
00:28:13probably that the wind and I see that people from Kraljevo are complaining
00:28:17on social networks about the smoke being there, now can you explain
00:28:20this situation to us, this is only a few kilometers from
00:28:24Ušće, this flame we see
00:28:27behind you, how quickly can it spread in such
00:28:31conditions, you see here is the most beautiful part of this
00:28:34forest is here, you see that it is all young forest, this
00:28:38that burned down there yesterday, those are low vegetation,
00:28:42rocky, but here you see dense grass, dense forest, these
00:28:45were once afforested by young people, meaning it is all
00:28:49young forest and here it can very easily ignite
00:28:53and go up, the whole Žaračka mountain can burn
00:28:56down, so here I appeal to the fire services to localize
00:29:00this as soon as possible if they can. so that
00:29:03an even bigger ecological problem is not created than it is now, so we remember
00:29:06some previous fires in the Ibar
00:29:09valley, when coniferous forests burned, that lasted
00:29:13for days, well yes, it is very difficult to put out a coniferous
00:29:16forest, because the fire goes
00:29:19into stumps, it goes into those cracks and when
00:29:23you think you have put it out, it later starts again, as soon as the wind blows or it
00:29:27calms down a bit, it immediately starts in another place, then there is the problem of these
00:29:30pine cones, they fly down. they glide, burning
00:29:33cones fall, creating new fires and new, new
00:29:37hotbeds and so it is very difficult
00:29:40to put out a pine forest, and just one more thing for the end, you said that
00:29:44you helped put out a fire in a
00:29:47household, how many houses are there on this right side of the Ibar
00:29:51and are they perhaps threatened at this
00:29:54moment, well you see, mostly
00:29:58the villages have now grouped in some nicer
00:30:00locations and... Old houses remained, some houses burned down yesterday, old stables that
00:30:04were abandoned, no one lived in them, and
00:30:08it's not a question
