00:00:36Today is October 2nd, Bapu's birthday. He was the person who said that
00:00:40feel it happens automatically, cleanliness is more important than freedom. And today,
00:00:44on this day, we are starting a new chapter of a story that has been
00:00:47written for the past 12 years. Absolutely right, Ayushman, welcome to
00:00:51I'll tell you some, and you know many of primary health services, Season 13 of the NDTV Dettol Banega Swasth India
00:00:54campaign. Now, most campaigns come and go,
00:00:57Ayushman. There's a slogan, there's a season, and then
00:01:01everyone forgets. But this one has stayed because
00:01:05change is not a one-day event. Change is a habit,
00:01:08and habits obviously take time. 13 years,
00:01:11Ayushman, is what it has taken to turn an
00:01:14idea into a way of life. And Ayushman, when this
00:01:17journey started, it started with a simple question:
00:01:21Can our country, India,
00:01:24be clean? And then you all answered it, the
00:01:28mothers in the villages who demanded toilets in their homes, the teachers who turned their classrooms
00:01:32into the first laboratory of change, the children
00:01:35who went home and started explaining to their parents, the
00:01:39ASHA workers, sarpanches, and sanitation workers, without whom this story
00:01:43is incomplete. I have always been drawn to stories that
00:01:46people hesitate to talk about, whether it's toilets, periods, hygiene.
00:01:50This campaign also does the same. It starts the conversation
00:01:54India needs to have. We have a long way to go and to keep at
00:01:58it. We do have a long way to go. We are keeping at it, Ayushman.
00:02:01Just as the whole world learned from the COVID pandemic
00:02:05that clean and healthy go together, we saw
00:02:09that hygiene alone is not enough. Health obviously is the
00:02:12bigger picture. And that's why Clean India will become
00:02:16Healthy India. Cleanliness was the first
00:02:19step. Health is the destination. Giving better
00:02:23health in more hands every day. Yes, better
00:02:26health because good health is not anyone's privilege.
00:02:30It is the right of every Indian in more hands because
00:02:34Gandhi ji's dream this responsibility is not just of doctors or the government. It is in the hands of a teacher,
00:02:37in the hands of a mother, in the hands of a child, and yes,
00:02:41in your hands, because every day, because health is not a one-day
00:02:44celebration, it is a daily habit, because now is the time to say,
00:02:48I am the change. And as we begin a new chapter, the
00:02:52launch of Season 13, I would like to welcome three leaders who
00:02:56played an important role in taking this vision forward. Joining
00:03:00us virtually is Chris Lyt, Chief Executive Officer, Reckitt.
00:03:03Joining us here we have Gaurav Jain, Executive Vice President,
00:03:07Regional Director, Reckitt South Asia. We also have with us
00:03:10Rahul Kanwal, CEO and Editor-in- Chief, NDTV. And we have
00:03:14with us Sonu Sood, actor, producer, and philanthropist, someone who's
00:03:17been on the campaign early and an integral part of it. Thank you all so
00:03:20much for joining us today. But
00:03:23before we go any further, we have a special message from the Health
00:03:27Minister of our country.
00:03:32On the auspicious occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth
00:03:36anniversary, I extend my heartfelt wishes
00:03:39to all of you on the launch
00:03:43of the 13th season
00:03:44of 'Banega Swasth India' (India will become healthy). For the past 12 seasons,
00:03:48'Banega Swasth India'
00:03:51The game is a passion has been doing the important work of spreading
00:03:54the message of cleanliness,
00:03:57health, and nutrition
00:04:01to every person in the country.
00:04:04This campaign has made many
00:04:08meaningful efforts, from training sanitation
00:04:12workers to promoting awareness
00:04:14of cleanliness and healthy lifestyles
00:04:18among children. I am proud that
00:04:20decades after independence,
00:04:24Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
00:04:27ji gave the call for Swachh Bharat (Clean India)
00:04:31from the ramparts of the Red Fort
00:04:34and explained the importance of cleanliness.
00:04:37Therefore, for every Under his leadership, the Swachh Bharat
00:04:40Abhiyan (Clean India Mission)
00:04:42they call and it connects. has today taken the form of a
00:04:45powerful mass movement. Continuing this
00:04:48spirit, this year's theme,
00:04:51'Better Health in More Hands,'
00:04:55seems very relevant and important to
00:04:58me. Over the
00:05:00past 12 years, under the
00:05:03excellent leadership of Prime Minister
00:05:06Shri Narendra Modi ji, the country
00:05:09has achieved cleanliness and health.
00:05:44The scheme is providing protection from
00:05:47the financial burden of illness to
00:05:51over 61 crore citizens. This
00:05:54number is more than the total population
00:05:57of the countries of the European Union.
00:06:00To provide comprehensive
00:06:0312 essential health packages are being
00:06:07provided through the Ayushman Arogya Mandir
00:06:11network. Due to
00:06:14the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (TB Free India campaign), the number of new TB
00:06:17cases reported annually in India
00:06:20has decreased by 21%,
00:06:23and TB-related deaths have decreased
00:06:26by 28%. With his visionary leadership,
00:06:30the Prime Minister has provided a strong
00:06:34safety net to crores of Indians.
00:06:38Prime Minister Modi believes
00:06:40that the goal of a healthy society
00:06:44can be achieved by expanding health
00:06:47facilities and promoting awareness and a
00:06:51healthy lifestyle. The 'Banega
00:06:54Swasth India' (India will become healthy) campaign will encourage
00:06:58the active participation of every citizen
00:07:01in realizing Prime Minister Shri
00:07:05Narendra Modi ji's resolve to make
00:07:08India a developed nation by 2047.
00:07:11A healthy and aware citizen is
00:07:15the foundation of a strong nation.
00:07:18Healthy citizens, healthy society, and
00:07:21healthy India. This is the strong
00:07:25foundation of a developed India. I extend
00:07:28my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes
00:07:31to the entire team of 'Banega Swasth
00:07:35India' and its partner organizations
00:07:38for the 13th season. Let us all
00:07:42together resolve to make Mahatma
00:07:47of a clean and healthy India a
00:07:50reality. Jai Hind! Thank you very
00:07:53much, Nadda ji. Somewhere,
00:07:56government support is also very important because
00:07:59private companies and media get involved
00:08:02in such missions, but at the same time,
00:08:06when the government's power is applied, then its
00:08:10effect is truly visible on the ground. It's fantastic to be here.
00:08:12We want to go across to Chris Lait of Reckitt Globally. Thank you very much, Chris, for
00:08:16joining us and thank you for partnering with NDTV in
00:08:19this very important mission. We're broadcasting live
00:08:23across a country of 1.4 billion people
00:08:26and your organization's core mission has been
00:08:30better health in more hands every day, but
00:08:33every day is a massive logistical and behavioral
00:08:36hurdle. As viewers watch this telethon,
00:08:40how does Reckitt ensure that basic wellness doesn't remain a
00:08:44luxury for the urban and reaches people all across
00:08:48the country, especially in those parts where they needed the
00:08:51most?
00:08:54Well, the question for us is not how we reach 1.4 billion people
00:08:57once, but actually how healthier choices can
00:09:01become part of everyday life for 1.4 billion
00:09:04people. That's a fundamentally different challenge. At
00:09:08Reckitt, we've learned that improving health at scale requires
00:09:12three things. The first thing is access. Better health
00:09:16cannot depend on where you live or what you earn. It requires
00:09:20solutions that are affordable, available, and relevant
00:09:23across diverse communities, say
00:09:26from major cities to the most remote parts of the country.
00:09:30The second element is trust. Sustainable
00:09:33behavior changes happen through healthcare workers, those
00:09:37at the frontline, and the leaders in the community who all play
00:09:40a critical role turning health information into
00:09:44action and action into
00:09:46habits. And at Reckitt, we're guided by the simple
00:09:49principle: doing the right thing always. That trust is
00:09:53not built through what we say; it is earned through
00:09:56consistent action, long-term commitment, and
00:09:59delivering meaningful outcomes for
00:10:02communities. And then the third element is
00:10:05prevention. The greatest public health impact comes when
00:10:09we help people stay healthy, not just treat illness.
00:10:13That's why we focus on embedding early
00:10:16healthy behaviors, particularly among children,
00:10:19where small interventions can create lifelong
00:10:22benefits and actually also influence entire
00:10:25families. So ultimately, it takes all those three
00:10:28components to be successful in this mission. 30
00:10:32million children reached, lacks of
00:10:35schools impacted across the country. But the
00:10:38question is about outcome. It's not just about
00:10:41outreach. How do you ensure that the
00:10:44outreach that you're being able to deliver is actually
00:10:47leading to measurable outcome, which I know is extremely important for you?
00:10:51I think I would start by saying that as a
00:10:54company, what makes us very different is our result
00:10:57orientation. And and and we are completely
00:11:00obsessed about results in our daily daily job, so we don't do
00:11:04things which look fashionable but are not yielding the results.
00:11:07And that's like a philosophy that we have and we pass on that
00:11:11philosophy to BSI. So whatever results, I mean,
00:11:16them is all audited. It's third-party audited.
00:11:19So it's not bunkum, or bullshit, which a lot of people might
00:11:23believe. And then we work with very smart people in the
00:11:26government. I don't think Rahul would be sitting here after 13
00:11:30years if we didn't have results to show. And all these state governments
00:11:34and central government helping us to extend our programs, that wouldn't have
00:11:37happened. So, I think on our
00:11:40first program of the school hygiene curriculum, which has been
00:11:44our longest running, I can tell you results on how handwashing has
00:11:48changed over years and how proper handwashing has happened. But the one metric
00:11:51we look at is absenteeism in schools.
00:11:55When we started in 2017, it was about 36%.
00:11:59In eight years, it's come down to 20%. Now,
00:12:01that huge difference on this large scale is basically
00:12:05because of two things: one is a reduction in diarrhea and pneumonia,
00:12:09which cause, which are handborne diseases. And so that's a
00:12:12big thing that we track. On
00:12:15our Durex program, we basically
00:12:18track the knowledge that these kids get on on condom
00:12:22use and on sexually transmitted diseases. Do they have the knowledge to help
00:12:25prevent that? When we started, that
00:12:28knowledge, the way we track it, was less than 2%. Today,
00:12:32it's gone up to 25%. And and what we know from global
00:12:36studies on on this subject is that this
00:12:38knowledge is extremely correlated very highly to
00:12:42when they get older and sexually active, to
00:12:46reduction in teen pregnancies and
00:12:49reduction in STIs. So that's something we track. I think
00:12:52we we have this program on self-care. We launched
00:12:56it four years back. We tested it in two districts, and the aim
00:13:00there was to reduce mortality deaths from zero to
00:13:03two years to zero. I think we did that. So we we did it for
00:13:07three years. We made deaths zero in those two districts.
00:13:11The previous three years, the number of deaths in those
00:13:14districts was about 1300. So in some way, you can say we
00:13:17stopped or avoided 1300 deaths. And now we've
00:13:21taken that to to 22 districts in the country, and we hope to achieve the
00:13:25same. On our World Toilet
00:13:28College, we we now have six of them. We
00:13:31have 25 cities covered. We have trained about
00:13:34two and a half lakh sanitation workers. We
00:13:38have a 90% placement rate, so we get them
00:13:41occupations in, say, hospitals, clinics,
00:13:44hotels. A much better way of living. And and we also
00:13:48get them government schemes. So Ayushman
00:13:51Bharat, the Ujjwala scheme, insurance schemes which they didn't have.
00:14:25Not one Sood, but 10-12 people would turn up. How do you decide whom to help and whom
00:14:28not to, because so many people need help? Whom can you help and whom can you not? I couldn't do it.
00:14:32In so many years, Rahul, I think we develop
00:14:36an X-ray machine inside us, that when we start talking,
00:14:40we know how genuine the case is. Even today, 200-300 people
00:14:44come to my office, in front of my house. And when I leave in the evening,
00:14:47when I meet them, some have medical emergencies,
00:14:51some have education problems. But in the last six, seven years,
00:14:55such a network has been built
00:14:58that even in small districts across the country,
00:15:02where someone wants to study or get treatment or needs a bed,
00:15:07During COVID, I connected with about 7.5 lakh people
00:15:10whom I sent home. Today, those 7.5 lakh people
00:15:14are like my volunteers, that if we need to send someone to Gonda district
00:15:18in UP, I'll press Gonda, and 10 contacts will appear there.
00:15:22Then we call them and say, "Please send this to him." If someone needs a buffalo,
00:15:26we look for people, and then that boy goes to find a buffalo, which one is good
00:15:30and gives good milk, and a calf is also given along with it,
00:15:33so that the house that was destroyed in the flood can get a livelihood.
00:15:36So these are small examples. Today, today, when I was coming here this morning,
00:15:40when I woke up, my phone rang at 5:30.
00:15:44I was about to get up, so I saw that someone was calling. I
00:15:48called back, and they said, "Sir, my brother's son is outside PGI Lucknow,
00:15:52he is not getting admission, and he is very serious. Please do something."
00:15:55So I sent a message to the doctors
00:15:58there, and I got a call at 6:15. And by the time I was coming from
00:16:02my house to this place, he had got admission,
00:16:05and finally he is getting treated. The aim is that perhaps God
00:16:09chooses that you do something, and then it
00:16:12will happen. And that that makes your day very special. So I
00:16:18I don't know, but the biggest lesson that I've
00:16:21learned in all these years is that
00:16:25you know, don't hesitate to ask for favors. You know, if I
00:16:29called you and said, "Rahul, let's help him with his studies," or "Don't ask
00:16:33for money," "I don't have money," then tell me if there's anything else.
00:16:36Don't.
00:17:07Get ready for something really exciting, strength, balance
00:17:10or incredible moves ka ek zaberdast combination malkha.
00:20:39the story is not over, because the Pacific
00:20:42Ocean is still warming up, and India
00:20:46may also have to pay the price.
00:21:20The temperature of that important region, which measures
00:21:23the strength of El Niño, had reached three
00:21:27degrees Celsius above normal. According to the US National
00:21:31Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is
00:21:33a 75% chance that by the end
00:21:37of the year, this El Niño will become as powerful
00:21:41as no El Niño has been since 1950.
00:21:44By October, this El Niño had surpassed every
00:21:48major El Niño since 1982.
00:22:08India does not need to wait to gauge its impact. Out of 18 El Niño years recorded in India so far, monsoon rainfall has been below normal in 13. This year too, less rainfall was recorded in 38% of India's regions. By September, more than half of the country was facing drought at some level. The Ministry of Agriculture has identified 315 districts as high-risk districts due to weak monsoon and El Niño conditions. And the issue was not just about less rainfall, but also about the water that could not be collected in reservoirs. By the end of September, only 70% of the water was collected in India's 178 major reservoirs. The end of the monsoon does not mean the end of the danger. The strength of El Niño is usually most intense between October and February, and there is a fear that it will remain very powerful throughout this winter. is at some level
00:22:12facing drought. The Ministry of Agriculture
00:22:16has identified 315 districts as high-risk
00:22:20districts due to weak monsoon and El Niño
00:22:24conditions. And the matter was not just about less
00:22:27rainfall, but also about the water that could
00:22:30not be collected in reservoirs. By the end of
00:22:33September, only 70% of the water was collected
00:22:37in India's 178 major reservoirs. The end
00:22:41of the monsoon does not mean the end of the danger.
00:22:44The strength of El Niño is usually most intense
00:22:48between October and February, and there is a fear
00:22:51that it will remain very powerful
00:22:54throughout this winter.
00:22:56What is the probability of it lasting until February
00:22:592027? 100%. According to
00:23:02the forecast of the Climate Impact Lab,
00:23:06the Earth's temperature may remain 1.2
00:23:09degrees Celsius above normal, and the number of
00:23:13very hot days may increase by 44%. India
00:23:16may have to pay the price of this increase
00:23:20in temperature with human lives. Researchers estimate
00:23:24that 15,800 people may die due to heat
00:23:28between September and February. In this matter, India
00:23:31is in the fourth position in the world. For a few
00:23:35months, El Niño may raise the world's temperature
00:23:38to a level that would normally take
00:23:42two more decades to reach. The oceans have warmed up,
00:23:46the direction of the winds has changed, and India
00:24:21are preparing to weigh each other's political strength
00:24:24in the balance of victory and defeat. Yogi and Akhilesh are taking
00:24:28the name of Ayodhya, the city
00:24:39Ever since we announced
00:24:41the candidate,
00:24:44the Bharatiya Janata Party is conducting surveys after
00:24:47surveys,
00:24:50and in every survey, it is lagging behind.
00:24:52It is being heard
00:24:55that
00:24:58they are not even able to find a new candidate
00:25:02in Ayodhya.
00:25:07And those who make
00:25:09big claims,
00:25:12and those chief ministers who make big claims,
00:25:15if they are so confident, then
00:25:18they should contest from Ayodhya themselves
00:25:20and show.
00:25:24And those who make false promises of
00:25:28separating milk from water will
00:25:30be exposed by the public this time.
00:25:34And they ask me
00:25:37to ask the Chief Minister to contest from Ayodhya.
00:25:41I offer you,
00:25:44come, you also file your nomination
00:25:47in Ayodhya, and I will also contest
00:25:50from Ayodhya. Let's try our luck once. Let it be
00:25:54decided. You also come, and I also
00:25:58come. Yogi's reply was due.
00:26:02Akhilesh's reaction also came. In Ayodhya,
00:26:05to defeat the thieves of donations and offerings, one young PDA
00:26:09guardian of ours is enough. Those who give a clean chit
00:26:13to thieves are partners. If milk and water were separated,
00:26:17then this time the public will expose all the arrogance.
00:26:20Did you forget the Lok Sabha? This political battle in the name
00:26:24of Ayodhya was started by Akhilesh Yadav.
00:26:27On October 8, he went to Ayodhya. Two months before the assembly elections,
00:26:31he had attended a Bhagwat Katha at the house of Pawan Pandey,
00:26:34the Samajwadi Party candidate. And from there, he challenged
00:26:38Yogi. Yogi replied three days later from Balrampur,
00:26:42but he had already become aggressive
00:26:44earlier. If Shri Akhilesh Yadav
00:26:48ji has the courage, then our decision is taken
00:26:51by him. If he has the courage, then he should also come
00:26:55from Ayodhya, and our Chief Minister ji will also
00:26:58come from Ayodhya. And if he wants to fight, then he should
00:27:01definitely fight and estimate
00:27:05his popularity and Yogi ji's popularity.
00:27:08Yogi ji will go to his house and win.
00:27:12Wherever he tells, he will leave Ayodhya. The dream
00:27:16that Akhilesh ji has dreamt of forming a government,
00:27:20that dream will remain a dream.
00:27:23But in this battlefield of words, when Yogi descended,
00:27:26the mafia was also mentioned, and the matter escalated
00:27:29from disciples to the guru. Yogi is asking,
00:28:03The Supreme Court took cognizance of the restrictions imposed
00:28:07in Delhi. During the hearing, it commented that people have
00:28:10the right to peaceful protest, but the method should be within
00:28:14the ambit of law. The Ministry of Home
00:28:16Affairs sent notices to Delhi Police
00:28:22and DMRC. Today also, protests by CJB
00:28:25at some places in Delhi. Delhi Police is as prepared as yesterday. Assault
00:28:29on police personnel regarding yesterday's protest. More than 20 cases of violation
00:28:38of Section 163. On CM Yogi's challenge to contest
00:28:42from Ayodhya, Akhilesh said, "First confirm Yogi's ticket.
00:28:45The CM himself asks for tickets from BJP leaders. Haughty people
00:28:49will be blown away in our Pawan's
00:28:55wind." PM Modi reached Chennai, inaugurated and laid
00:28:59the foundation stone of projects worth more than 13 thousand
00:29:03crore rupees. Traveled in Chennai Metro with Vijay.
00:29:14The Budhi Gandaki river in Nepal has suddenly flooded again. Three
00:29:18bridges, more than 35 houses washed away. No casualties reported
00:29:22so far. Relief and rescue operations
00:29:23are ongoing. Alert in UP and Bihar.
00:29:30NDTV India, India's Trust.
00:29:46We have reached Prayagraj with this journey of Election
00:29:49Expressway. What has changed after the construction
00:29:52of the expressway? The crowd gets divided.
00:29:56The speed of our car is fast. The speed of our life is also fast.
00:30:00Development is a good thing. Before this, Uttar Pradesh
00:30:03has established itself as an expressway
00:30:07state in the last nine years. Our BJP
00:30:10friends are advised that if Mother Ganga calls,
00:30:14do not go by
00:30:15Ganga Expressway.
00:30:34and you are watching your favorite show, Election
00:30:38Expressway, where there is a beginning and an end,
00:30:42and where there is a beginning and an end. Similarly,
00:30:45we have reached Prayagraj with this journey of
00:30:49Ganga Expressway. They say that
00:30:53Ganga comes from its source to the confluence.
00:30:56In the same way, the journey of Ganga Expressway, which
00:31:00is about 600 kilometers long and passes through 12
00:31:04districts, reaches the confluence.
