00:08:13to talk about the situation developing in the middle east, in
00:08:17the second segment we are going to talk about the controversy in the
00:08:20so-called largest democracy in the world, India
00:08:23regarding the revision in the electoral roles,
00:08:27there has been crackdown on the part the authorities against the
00:08:30demonstrations and the massive protests
00:08:34as they have erupted against this exercise the election
00:08:38commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata party
00:08:42led government in the center, we are going to talk about that
00:08:45particular pressing issue India is faced with in the second segment of
00:08:54that the situation which is unfolding in the middle
00:08:58east has entered into a very dangerous
00:09:01phase. when we talk about the convergence of multiple crises, when we
00:09:05talk about there was a crisis that was unfolding between the
00:09:09US and Iran, there is little bit of lull
00:09:13when we talk about the active hostilities between the two, but on the other
00:09:17side we have seen there is increase in the escalation
00:09:21when we talk about Saudi Arabia and the Huti
00:09:24rebels, also there are reports that suggest that the
00:09:28fighting continues in the red sea around Babel
00:09:32Mandab between the Houti rebels and the Yemen's
00:09:36government. Also when we talk about in the latest the
00:09:39developments there has been a horrific attack. on
00:09:43kingdom of Saudi Arabia Zuriyad's King Khalid International
00:09:47Airport, as result of which there have
00:09:49been reports of casualities and injuries
00:09:53as well, at least 12 people have been killed and over
00:09:56309 people have been injured
00:10:00in that particular series of strikes by the Houti
00:10:04rebels against Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we have seen a
00:10:07strong reaction coming from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia
00:10:11calling or... describing this action is a full
00:10:15fledged war crime and is also promised very
00:10:18decisive response against the houti rebels in the wake
00:10:22of this particular act of aggression. on the part the huties,
00:10:26likewise we have seen the condemmination coming from all
00:10:29across, when we talk about the United Nations Secretary, General
00:10:33Pakistan's prime minister Shahbaz Sharief has also
00:10:36condemned this attack and is also reiterated
00:10:40Pakistan's commitment to Saudi Arabia's security,
00:10:44especially under the Macca joint defense
00:10:47agreement, also Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab
00:10:51Emirates and number of other countries and also...
00:10:55international institutions, including the European Union, they have
00:10:59also condemned this attack against Kingdom of Saudi
00:11:02Arabia's sovereignty, territorial integrity
00:11:06and security. At the same time there is an interesting factor when we talk
00:11:10about President Donald Trump, he was asked whether there could
00:11:14be a possibility the military involvement on the
00:11:18part the US, besides the Saudi
00:11:21forces against the hootis, he responded by saying:
00:11:25that we may, but that is not an official
00:11:29confirmation that perhaps the US would be
00:11:32involved in this retaliation the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia against the
00:11:36hoothies through the military means, what are the options
00:11:40resting with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia amid this
00:11:44escalating situation between itself and the
00:11:47hoothis is concerned, what is the likelihood the US military
00:11:51involvement in this and also when we talk about in the
00:11:55larger scheme of things when there are
00:11:58uncertainties regarding as to where that conflict between
00:12:02the US and Iran will go, although there is a suspension of
00:12:06strikes, there was an announcement made by the US president regarding the
00:12:10suspension of strikes until after the midterm elections
00:12:13against Iran, but does this front actually
00:12:17compound that entire situation in the middle east
00:12:21when we talk about kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Houti rebels? where
00:12:25does diplomacy stand at the moment when it comes to or there
00:12:28any sort of chances when we talk about deescalating
00:12:32the situation between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Hutis
00:12:36through diplomatic
00:13:13we specifically try to understand this
00:13:16very series of strikes on the part the huties when
00:13:20it comes to the civilian infrastructure within the
00:13:24kingdom of south. Arabia, it has been described as a full
00:13:27fledged war crime on the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it has
00:13:31also promised a very decisive response. Could you give us an
00:13:35understanding, how do you look at that?
00:13:39What's your assessment, what is this act on the part of hutis when
00:13:43it comes to specifically visave the civilian
00:13:53going on in the middle east, look, let's... "let's not kit ourselves, okay? the hoothi
00:13:56rebels are proxies the Iranian regime,
00:14:00okay? so they are acting uh, one
00:14:04on behalf of Iran, but two, the hoothi rebels have been at war with
00:14:08Saudi Arabia for years, right? I mean, I can recall when I was the senior intelligence
00:14:12officer in jibuuti uh, Africa in 2015 that the
00:14:15Hutis were firing drones and ballistic missiles at
00:14:19Saudi Arabia, but also at the United Arab Emirates, so there's a lot of blad bad
00:14:23blood between the two." Okay uh and and I suspect you
00:14:27know strongly Iran's been funding them, equipping them,
00:14:31training them, there's IRGC advisors on the ground, the Houti have
00:14:35also been firing ballistic missiles into Israel, so let's let's not
00:14:39let's not think that this just occurred, this has been going on for a long
00:14:43time uh
00:14:44this is intended to in my opinion do two things uh it's it's
00:14:48intended to add to the the glut if you of oil coming
00:14:52out the uh out the Persian Gulf by shutting down, I get your
00:14:56point sweet, if you
00:15:02this instance, in particular when when we talk
00:15:05about the targeting the civilian infrastructure, we've seen the
00:15:09casualties happening, hundreds of injuries have
00:15:12happened, this is clear cut violation of international law, the
00:15:16international norms, there are covenants, there conventions
00:15:19internationally that forbid and prohibit in
00:15:23categorical terms of any... military
00:15:26advancement or strike when it comes to the civilian
00:15:29infrastructure? no, I agree with that, it is, it is a war
00:15:32crime, and look, we've seen nothing but war crimes for the past four and a
00:15:36half years and the international community largely ignored them,
00:15:40okay? uh, so yes a war crime, civilians were killed,
00:15:44civilians were the target, okay, riyad is the airport that they
00:15:48struck is a civilian airport, it's
00:15:49not a military airport, it's a civilian airport, it was delivered and it got what they
00:15:53wanted, which was attention to their cause
00:15:57and attention to Iran's cause, and they believe that by
00:16:00escalating and getting that type of attention that the other nations
00:16:04in the region, the other gulf state nations and... and
00:16:07Israel will somehow back off of uh off either
00:16:11Iran or back off uh off the hoofi, but all that's
00:16:15really done is just in my opinion is just yes it it
00:16:19further escalates the situation and it's going to possibly cause an
00:16:23expansion the war okay when i say expansion the war mean
00:16:26Saudi Arabia retaliating but retaliatory strikes don't win
00:16:30wars they just make you feel better at
00:16:32the end the day but it could involve Pakistan it could also involve
00:16:35Turkey uh and stated in your opening uh
00:16:38piece, both them are signatories to the Mecca agreement,
00:16:42but let's also understand that they signed that document almost three months ago,
00:16:46so it's very um we're
00:16:48a time right now uh that that one or
00:16:51two actions on the battlefield can cause strategic
00:16:55consequences and and we're starting to see that uh right now
00:16:59on the ground
00:17:07"what's your understanding when we specifically talk about the options
00:17:11resting right now after this horrific attack against civilian
00:17:15infrastructure in the kingdom? what options resting with the
00:17:19kingdom of Saudi Arabia when it has promised a
00:17:22decisive response in return to towards the
00:17:30look, I agree with what my colleague John Sweet is saying, I think
00:17:34the hoothies are messaging here trying to bring a..." attention to their
00:17:38cause uh by attacking the king Khalid airport, which is a
00:17:42civilian airport, clearly uh they're not only just committing a war
00:17:46crime uh, but they're trying to send loud exclamation mark that they don't
00:17:49mind uh because they view that as is key to
00:17:53getting their global message out there. that set, I think there's also two
00:17:57other messages that are happening that will impact the nature of Saudi
00:18:01Arabia's response uh, this kind of attack, this type of horrific attack
00:18:05where 12 people were killed uh did happen a vacuum,
00:18:09I highly suspect that the approaching US mid-terms
00:18:13also motivated the hoothies to act uh by attacking the US all in
00:18:17the region, by attacking the sunni state at that, and
00:18:21that they are attempting to influence oil prices and and
00:18:25probably Iran is behind this, not probably, we know that Iran is behind this, the
00:18:29IRGC has been less effective of late in terms of interdicting
00:18:33oil supplies going through the traiter chamus, and so they need the hoothies to be
00:18:37escalated. in the babomed dead straight in the red sea in general, and I
00:18:41think that's why we've seen this action of late with the Housies taking the red sea
00:18:44coastal areas and now forcing Saudi Arabia to come
00:18:47back, so Saudi Arabia has a big decision ahead them,
00:18:51they need to ask themselves, are we going to continue to manage this conflict
00:18:55as we have for you, two decades, this goes back to
00:18:592015 uh, where they just want to manage it to a stailmate, because that's
00:19:03certainly been their approach, that's certainly been the yemini government approach,
00:19:07how... asstelment has got them vulnerable where they're at now because Iran
00:19:11over that same time period is been supplying um via the
00:19:14IRGC uh the hoothies with ballistic missiles and drones and they're coming
00:19:18under attack so so far Saudi Arabia in terms of this firm
00:19:22response that their defense spokesman uh made this morning or
00:19:25yesterday depending on what time zone you're in um yeah if it's just going to be
00:19:29more air strikes if it's only going to be loand to ground type
00:19:32support uh for operations to retake uh territory control by the
00:19:36hoothies. "I don't think much changes uh, and Pakistan
00:19:40itself, as part of this Mecca agreement, is also going to have to be deciding whether
00:19:44or not they're going to hear their own 2015 uh
00:19:48decision not to involve themselves in offensive
00:19:51operations uh in Yemen, but simply to resort to or I mean
00:19:55to uh refrain themselves from that, but just to
00:19:58basically be there to defend holy sites and and uh
00:20:02civilian sites within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia itself uh so
00:20:06Saudi Arabia has a big..." voice here, it's not clear which way they're going to do uh,
00:20:10but I do think they need to be doing more air streaks, I think they need to be considering the
00:20:14introduction of of ground forces if only a limited basis
00:20:17and and and quickly here, I think they also need to be talking to the new
00:20:21partners, how they can bring this about, because if not, this is just going
00:20:25to be rince and repeat and Saudi Arabia in the region will keep facing this
00:20:29crisis, uh the Houthies are not going away, unless they're
00:20:39the US position with hoodis, now there was an
00:20:43earlier stance, we know for fact a few weeks back, there
00:20:47was a statement made by president himself,
00:20:50that perhaps there was some sort of an engagement when it
00:20:54comes to the US and hooutis and hootis didn't want the
00:20:58US to come after them. now looking at
00:21:02this spec specific attack,
00:21:06president Trump was himself asked whether there could be a
00:21:09US military involvement and he said we may. it's not
00:21:13an official confirmation, as we do have clarity
00:21:17on that, but what could be the likelihood the? involvement at
00:21:21this stage going against the hoothies, do you
00:21:25think the US just before the midterm elections could afford to be involved
00:21:29militarily on another front just when it is involved
00:21:32directly with Iran on the other
00:21:39of 2025, from March to May 2025, the United States was involved an
00:21:43operation called rough writer in which they bombed right, hoothy targets
00:21:47for the better part of 45 days and if you recall, uh when the
00:21:50ceasefire was announced, the uh
00:21:53the agreement for the most part was the hoothi said we won't we won't attack us ships
00:21:57if you stop bombinas right and that was it and that supposedly was the end
00:22:01the operation an operation by the way which the Saudi Arabia government
00:22:05sat back and watch and did not participate uh they're probably
00:22:09thinking they probably should have done that earlier look the president says he
00:22:13may consider striking targets in Yemen um I I
00:22:16would say if he goes after targets in Yemen that those targets are going to be
00:22:20IRGC targets, IRGC forces that are
00:22:24supporting hoothi rebels at ballistic missile sites, at ports
00:22:27where missiles are arriving at training facilities, so there may
00:22:31be some additional strikes that occur,
00:22:33I don't necessarily think he's going to be chasing hoothi, I think he's going to be chasing the source,
00:22:37and the source in this case in my opinion is
00:22:39Iran.
00:22:43Right, okay, color sweet, when we try to understand the overall
00:22:47scheme of things, when we talk about... were the objectives which
00:22:51was said by Trump administration when we talk about its
00:22:54invasion against Iran so far more
00:22:58than more than eight months into that particular
00:23:02conflict, there is announcement that perhaps the
00:23:05newer strikes might come after the midterm
00:23:09elections. now we've also seen the
00:23:13approval ratings for President Trump going down before the
00:23:17mid-term elections. now if if in case
00:23:20there happens to be a military involvement on part the
00:23:23US to support Saudi Arabia against the
00:23:27hoothies, what sort of an impact this
00:23:31military involvement do you think it could have generally on the public
00:23:34opinion just before the
00:23:41and I'll go back to what Marcus said, if it's just retiratory
00:23:44strikes, if it's just hitting buildings and uh, and and showing
00:23:48battle damage assessment. videos to the American public and how successful we
00:23:52were at blowing things up, then I don't think the impact is anything, be quite
00:23:55honest with, because it doesn't achieve anything, if the impact is fall
00:23:59of regime, if the impact is the opening the straight because there's
00:24:03nobody firing into either the bob bob
00:24:07almond or into the straight of harmus, and safe passages
00:24:11occurring, and we're seeing a sense peace break out through the middle east,
00:24:14I think it has a positive impact, but right now the targets at
00:24:18least as axios. reported, the possible targets that the
00:24:22president had mentioned earlier were Iranian energy, Iranian
00:24:25infrastructure, and nuclear targets. none them included the
00:24:29IRGC by name, and none them include the possibility of taking the
00:24:33regime down, so retaliatory strides and massive assaults
00:24:37up to now, as you had just said, eight months into a conflict, having
00:24:40achieved the desired result, in this case the desired result will
00:24:44be uh the fall the regime. what it has done is limit their
00:24:47abilities to respond. intentionally, but they still
00:24:51have, as far as we understand, they still have some enriched uranium, and they still
00:24:55have asymmetric capability that threatens the entire
00:24:58region, and addition, it's been threatening great Britain and other
00:25:02allies throughout Europe, because their ability to leverage proxies and
00:25:06sleeper cells, so Iran continues to be a problem, and unless he
00:25:10addresses the problem, which is the regime, that I don't think he gets
00:25:14much headway in united
00:25:29what is the likelihood the US getting militarily involved in
00:25:33support of Saudi Arabia against Saudies given the fact that was earlier
00:25:36statement or a stance on the part of president himself when
00:25:40he said publicly that hoothies have asked him not to
00:25:44go behind them after them,
00:25:46sorry, right? now i really doubt. that
00:25:50President Trump is going to be willing to initiate uh any wide-scale
00:25:53attacks at this point in support of Saudi Arabia ahead the
00:25:57midterms - simply because he's trying to manage oil prices and
00:26:01by extension gas prices. is to the average American uh uh
00:26:04consumer and ultimately voter uh now after the midterms on November
00:26:083rd uh he certainly all options are open, I would
00:26:12say it's notable that he came out and uh
00:26:15stated um uh that uh he's considering strikes so I think you can
00:26:19interpret that as messaging from President Trump uh to the hoothies
00:26:23that look you may be uh
00:26:25you know uh creating a problem right now but I'm going to be willing to solve it
00:26:29most likely later after the mid-terms and he'll certainly be. free to do
00:26:33that uh and I think it's going to be needed because I think if you just step back and you look at the
00:26:37battlefield uh in the maps initially it was uh
00:26:41in the last 10 days or so Saudi Arabia the coalition led by
00:26:44Saudi Arabian umany forces that were taking the initiative uh they were
00:26:48able to start sweeping toward the coastal plane to try to retake that
00:26:52territory but in the last several days it's actually been the hoothies who regained
00:26:56the initiative in and around to the tas
00:26:59uh the the kind the political uh uh
00:27:03gold star that they want to win for themselves uh
00:27:06but they've been rebup so far um you know but also the uh the the
00:27:10yumani back forces you struggled in the marib i'm sorry the marib
00:27:14governant which is a mountain this region to try to be a supporting operation to
00:27:18the coastal military operations but that hasn't gone well either for the
00:27:22coalition so definitely Saudis are going to need help
00:27:26uh they're going to need it from the United States and they're going to need it from the Mecca agreement because
00:27:30right
00:27:37Mark, here is the interesting dimension, now the multiple
00:27:40fronts as far as hutis which are
00:27:44they are involved on multiple fronts when we talk about against the kingdom of Saudi
00:27:48Arabia itself, then in the Red Sea the reports coming
00:27:52there is intensification, the fighting against the Yemini government itself,
00:27:56first of all I want you understanding where where do the
00:28:00hoothies get this capacity '
00:28:03from and what's actually the basis of
00:28:06that? also, while lot of countries, international
00:28:10organizations such as the UN and EU have condemned this
00:28:14airport attack, now European Commission president has
00:28:18also condemned it, but at the same
00:28:21time she has characterized the Hutis as
00:28:24Iran's proxies. now there is another dimension
00:28:27when we when we try to analyze this one, just few days
00:28:31back there was a possibility, there was an expression of interest on the part the
00:28:35Iranian foreign ministry spokesman that Iran's good
00:28:39offices could help mediate resolve the crisis
00:28:43between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the
00:28:45hoothies. looking at all these
00:28:48aspects, what's your conclusion? do we understand
00:28:52there is a direct backing for the capacity the Houties when it comes to Iran
00:28:56or if it is not there, could Iran play a mediating
00:28:59role at this point? "now that's a great
00:29:03question and I think it really goes to the heart the problem that Iran
00:29:07has created for itself and for the rest the mide east. Iran clearly is
00:29:11behind this. the huties didn't find arms out of nowhere uh, they're using
00:29:15Russian equipment, they have Iranian ballistic missiles and drones and
00:29:19the IRGC
00:29:20you know have feet on the ground, boots on the ground uh
00:29:22inside controlled territory in yeman and
00:29:26so clearly they are the sponsors of it, so it's a little bit too faced in my
00:29:30opinion for the Iranians to be coming out. saying they can broker a
00:29:33peace because they're actually behind this war in my opinion and so from
00:29:37that time I think it's it's tricky and don't just take my word for it, I
00:29:41think if you look to king Abdullah II of Jordan back in
00:29:452004 we're talking 22 years ago
00:29:49now uh he warned the Arab world that this uh access of
00:29:52resistance that was aimed at Israel think of that what you might was
00:29:56also in effect the Shia crecent that Iran was aiming at the
00:30:00sunni world uh and and it's come to firation, we've seen that just on
00:30:04the attacks that Iran has been willing to do during the Gulf war in Bahrain,
00:30:08Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the like and the United Arab
00:30:11Emirates, and and now we've certainly seen it in terms of indirectly through the
00:30:15hoothies by them attacking uh Saudi Arabia,
00:30:19so you don't think Iran is that mediator uh simply because they're
00:30:23behind this, it's it's to their benefit right now to create second
00:30:27front uh and the huthies are willing to do that, now I would just quickly add
00:30:30here the the the Houties. act in many different ways, clearly their
00:30:34chief backer is Iran, but obviously they have their own interests, so uh,
00:30:38this is just one angle, they have a long-term war against Saudi Arabia, but
00:30:42they're also willing to be allies to help Iran out, because in their minds it
00:30:46helps them out. Okay, Mark,
