00:06:14Hello and welcome to unfold, I am Javar Tehami, in the first segment of
00:06:17today's show we are going to talk about the situation developing in the
00:06:21Middle East. In the second segment we are going to talk about the
00:06:25controversy in the so-called largest democracy in the world,
00:06:29India regarding the revision in the electoral
00:06:32roles. There has been crackdown on the part the authorities against the
00:06:36demonstrations and the massive protests
00:06:40as they have erupted against. "this exercise the election
00:06:44commission of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party
00:06:48led government in
00:06:49the center, we are going to talk about that particular pressing issue India is
00:06:53faced with in the second segment of today's show. Let's
00:06:57begin with the first one, we know for fact that
00:07:01the situation which is unfolding in the Middle East
00:07:05has entered into a very dangerous phase when we talk
00:07:08about the convergence of multiple crisis, when we talk about the..." the
00:07:12crisis that was unfolding between the US and
00:07:16Iran, there is a little bit of lull when we talk about the
00:07:20active hostilities between the two, but on the other side we have seen there is
00:07:24increase in the escalation when we talk
00:07:27about Saudi Arabia and the Huti rebels,
00:07:31also there are reports that suggest that the fighting
00:07:34continues in the Red Sea around Babel Mandab
00:07:38between the Houti rebels and the Yemen's government.
00:07:42Also when we talk about in the latest the developments, there has been
00:07:46a horrific attack on kingdom of Saudi Arabia
00:07:50Zuriyad's king Khalid international airport, as
00:07:53result of which there have been reports of
00:07:57casualities and injuries as well, at least 12 people have been
00:08:01killed and over 309 people have
00:08:05been injured in that particular series of
00:08:08strikes by the Houti Rebels against Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
00:08:13"we have seen a strong reaction coming from the kingdom of Saudi
00:08:16Arabia calling or describing this action as a
00:08:20full fledged war crime and is also promised a
00:08:24very decisive response against theuti rebels in the
00:08:28wake of this particular act of aggression on the part the hoothies.
00:08:32likewise we have seen the condemnation coming from all
00:08:35across when we talk about the United Nations secretary general
00:08:39Pakistan's prime minister Shabaz Sharif is also..."
00:08:42condemned this attack and is also reiterated
00:08:46Pakistan's commitment to Saudi Arabia's security,
00:08:50especially under the Mackay joint defense
00:08:53agreement. Also Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and
00:08:57number of other countries and also international
00:09:01institutions, including the European Union, they have also
00:09:05condemned this attack against Kingdom of Saudi
00:09:08Arabia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and
00:09:12security at the same time there is an interesting factor when we talk about president
00:09:16Donald Trump, he was asked whether there could be a
00:09:20possibility the military involvement on the part
00:09:24the US besides the Saudi forces
00:09:28against the hoouties, he responded by saying that
00:09:31we may, but that is not an official
00:09:35confirmation that perhaps the US would be
00:09:38involved in this retaliation the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia against.
00:09:42the hoothies through the military means what are the options
00:09:46resting with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia amid this
00:09:49escalating situation between itself and the hoot
00:09:53is concerned, what is the likelihood the US military
00:09:57involvement in this and also when we talk about in the
00:10:01larger scheme of things when there are
00:10:04uncertainties regarding as to where that conflict between
00:10:08the US and Iran will go, although there is a suspension of...
00:10:12there was an announcement made by the US president regarding the
00:10:15suspension of strikes until after the midterm elections
00:10:19against Iran, but does this front actually
00:10:23compound that, entire situation in the middle east when
00:10:27we talk about kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Huti rebels, where does
00:10:31diplomacy stand at the moment when it comes to,
00:10:34are there any sort of chances when we talk about deescalating
00:10:38the situation between kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Hutis through
00:10:42diplomatic means, all these important aspects of discussion, for that we
00:10:46are honored to being joined by Mr. Mark Toth, he is the the
00:10:50co-founder of Intereb 360, Mark, thank you very
00:10:54much
00:10:54for being. with us on the show tonight, really appreciate that, also
00:10:58we are honored to being joined by Mr. Cornel Jonathan
00:11:02ESweet, he is co-founder intereb 360, is
00:11:05retired from US Army. Canal Sweet, thank you very
00:11:09much for your time also for being with us on the show tonight, really appreciate
00:11:13that. First of all, let's begin the discussion with
00:11:16you, colnel Sweet, when we specifically try to
00:11:20understand this very
00:11:24series of strikes on... the part the hootis when it comes to the
00:11:27civilian infrastructure within the kingdom of Saudi
00:11:31Arabia, it has been described as a full fledged war
00:11:34crime on the part the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it has also promised
00:11:38a very decisive response. could you give us an
00:11:41understanding, how do you look at that,
00:11:45what's your assessment, what is this act on the part of hutis when
00:11:49it comes to specifically visave the civilian
00:11:52infrastructure? for sure? first of all, thank you for having me on the
00:11:56show, it's always a great opportunity to talk about what's going on in the middle east.
00:12:00look, let's let let's not kit ourselves. okay, the hoothi rebels are
00:12:04proxies the Iranian regime. okay, so they
00:12:08are acting, one on behalf of Iran, but
00:12:11two, the hoothi rebels have been at war with Saudi Arabia for years,
00:12:15right? I mean, I can recall when I was the senior intelligence officer in jibuuti
00:12:19uh, Africa in 2015 that the hooties were
00:12:22firing drones in. missiles at Saudi Arabia
00:12:26but also at the United Arab Emirates, so there's a lot of blad bad blood between the
00:12:30two. Okay, and and I suspect,
00:12:34strongly, Iran's been funding them, equipping them, training them, there's
00:12:38IRGC advisors on the ground, the Houti have also been firing
00:12:42ballistic missiles into Israel, so let's let's not let's not think that
00:12:46this just occurred, this has been going on for a long
00:12:49time, uh, this is intended to, in my opinion, do
00:12:53two things, uh, it's it's
00:12:54intended to add to the the glut if you of oil coming out
00:12:58the uh out the Persian Gulf by shutting
00:13:01down sweet if you allow me to interject over
00:13:05here I get your point but specifically talking about this
00:13:09instance in particular when when we talk about the targeting the
00:13:13civilian infrastructure we've seen the casualties happening
00:13:17hundreds of injuries have happened this is clear cut
00:13:20violation of international law the international norms there are covenants there
00:13:24can't conventions internationally that forbid and prohibit
00:13:28in categorical terms of any military
00:13:32advancement or strike when it comes to the civilian
00:13:35infrastructure? no, I agree with that, it it
00:13:38it is, it is a war crime
00:13:39and look, we've seen nothing but war crimes for the past four and a half years
00:13:43and we see the international community largely ignored them,
00:13:46okay? so yes a war crimes, civilians were killed,
00:13:50civilians were the target, okay, riad is the airport that they
00:13:54struck as sivil. airport, it's not a military airport, it's a civilian airport, it was
00:13:57delivered and it got what they wanted, which was
00:14:00attention to their cause attention to Iran's
00:14:04cause, and they believe that by escalating and getting that type
00:14:08of attention that the other nations in the region, the other gulf state
00:14:12nations in Jordan and Israel, will somehow back
00:14:15off of off either Iran or back off off
00:14:19the hoothi, but all that's really done is just in my
00:14:23opinion is just yeah. it further escalates the situation and it's
00:14:27going to possibly cause an expansion the war. okay, when i say expansion
00:14:31the war, mean saudi Arabia retaliating, but retaliatory
00:14:35strikes don't win wars, they just make you feel better at the end the day, but it could
00:14:39involve Pakistan, it could also involve Turkey uh, and as you
00:14:43stated in your opening uh piece, both them are signatories to the
00:14:47Mecca agreement, but it's also understand that they signed that document almost three
00:14:51months ago uh, so it's very um, we're
00:14:54a time. right now uh that that one or two
00:14:58actions on the battlefield can cause strategic consequences
00:15:01and and we're starting to see that right now on the ground
00:15:05there
00:15:06in in the middle east right colnel sweet if you allow me please stay with
00:15:09us i'll proceed towards Mark what's
00:15:13your understanding when we specifically talk about the options
00:15:17resting right now after this horrific attack against civilian
00:15:21infrastructure in the kingdom what options resting? the
00:15:25kingdom of Saudi Arabia when it has promised a
00:15:28decisive response in return to towards the
00:15:31hoothies, right? now greetings to you and your
00:15:35viewers, look, I agree with what? my colleague John Swed is
00:15:39saying uh, I think the uh Hothies are messaging here trying
00:15:43to bring attention to their cause by attacking the King
00:15:46Khalid airport, which is a civilian airport, clearly
00:15:50uh they're not only just committing a war crime uh but they're trying to send lout
00:15:54exclamation mark that they don't mind uh because they view that
00:15:57as is uh key to getting their global message out
00:16:01there, that set, I think there's also two other messages that are happening
00:16:05that will impact the nature of Saudi. garibia's response uh, this kind
00:16:09of attack, this type of horrific attack where 12 people were killed, didn't
00:16:13happen a vacuum, i highly suspect that the
00:16:17approaching us midterms also motivated the hoothies to
00:16:20act by attacking a US all in the region by
00:16:24attacking the sunni state at that um and that they are
00:16:27attempting to influence oil prices and in
00:16:31probably Iran is behind this, not probably, we know that Iran is behind this, the
00:16:34IGC has been less effective of late in terms. of interdicting
00:16:38uh oil supplies going through the straight of chamoz, and so they need the hoothies to
00:16:42be escalating in the babomed straight in the red sea in general, and
00:16:46I think that's why we've seen this action of late with the Housies taking the red sea
00:16:50coastal areas and now forcing Saudi Arabia to come
00:16:53back, so Saudi Arabia has a big decision ahead them,
00:16:57they need to ask themselves, are we going to continue to manage this conflict
00:17:01as we have for you, two decades, this goes back to
00:17:052015 uh where they just want to... managed to a stailmate because that's
00:17:09certainly been their approach, it's certainly been the yemini government approach
00:17:12uh, however a stailmate has got them vulnerable where they're at now, because
00:17:16Iran over that same time period is been supplying
00:17:19um via the IRGC uh the huties with ballistic missiles and drones and
00:17:23they're coming under attack so so far Saudi Arabia in terms the
00:17:27firm response that their defense spokesman uh made this
00:17:31morning or yesterday depending on what time zone you're in um yeah if it's just
00:17:35going to be more air strikes if it's only going to be long to ground type
00:17:38support
00:17:40uh for operations to retake territory control by the hooties, I don't think
00:17:43much changes uh, and you know Pakistan itself as part of this
00:17:47Mecca agreement is also going to have to be deciding whether or not they're going
00:17:51to hear their own 2015 uh decision not to involve
00:17:55themselves in offensive operations uh in Yemen but simply
00:17:59to resort to or I mean to uh refrain themselves from
00:18:03that but just to basically be there to defend holy sights and
00:18:07and uh civilian sites within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia
00:18:10itself uh so Saudi Arabia has a big choice here, it's not clear which way
00:18:14they're going to do uh, but I do think they need to be doing more air streaks, I think
00:18:18they need to be considering the introduction of of ground forces if
00:18:22only a limited basis and and and quickly here I think they also need to be
00:18:26talking to the necca partners how they can bring this about because if
00:18:30not this is just going to be rince and repeat and Saudi Arabia in the region will keep
00:18:34facing this crisis uh the Houties are not going away and unless they're
00:18:37defeated. Mark, I'll come back to
00:18:41you. coming back to you colnel Sweet, when we try to understand the
00:18:45US position with Hoodies. now, there was an
00:18:49earlier stance, we know for fact a few weeks back,
00:18:53there was a statement made by president himself
00:18:56that perhaps there was some sort of an engagement when it
00:19:00comes to the US and Houtis and Houties didn't want the
00:19:04US to come after them. now... looking at
00:19:08this spec specific attack,
00:19:11president Trump was himself asked whether they could be a
00:19:15US military involvement and he said we may, it's not
00:19:19an official confirmation as we do have clarity on
00:19:23that, but what could be the likelihood the US involvement at
00:19:27this stage going against the hoothies? do
00:19:30you think the US just before the midterm elections could afford to be involved
00:19:34militarily on another front? just when it is involved
00:19:38directly with Iran on the other side? sure,
00:19:42look, great question. look, I'm going to take you back to March of 2025, from March to
00:19:46May 2025, the United States was involved an operation called Ruff
00:19:49Rider, in which they bombed right, hoothy targets for the better part of
00:19:5345 days and if you recall when the cease fire was
00:19:57announced, the uh the agreement for the most part was the Houti
00:20:01said we won't we won't attack US ships if you stop bombing us right,
00:20:05and that was it, and that supposedly was the end the... operation, an operation
00:20:09by the way, which the Saudi Arabia government sat back and watched and did not
00:20:12participate, uh, they're probably thinking they probably should have done
00:20:16that earlier. look, the president says he may consider
00:20:20striking targets in yemen, um, i would say if he goes after
00:20:23targets in yemen that those targets are going to be IRGC
00:20:27targets, irgc forces that are supporting hoothi rebels at ballistic
00:20:31missile sites at ports where missiles are arriving
00:20:35at training facilities, so the... may be some additional strikes that occur, i
00:20:39don't necessarily think he's going to be chasing hoothi, i think he's going to be chasing the
00:20:43source, and the source in this case in my opinion is
00:20:46Iran, uh, right uh...
00:20:50Okay, colnel Sweet, when we try to understand the overall scheme of things,
00:20:54when we talk about what were the objectives which was said by
00:20:57Trump administration, when we talk about its invasion
00:21:01against Iran, so far more
00:21:04than more than eight months into that particular
00:21:08conflict, there is announcement that perhaps the
00:21:11newer strikes might come after the midterm
00:21:15elections, now we've also seen the
00:21:19approval. for President Trump going down before the midterm
00:21:23elections, now if if in case there happens
00:21:27to be a military involvement on part the US
00:21:31to support Saudi Arabia against the hoothies, what
00:21:35sort of an impact this military involvement do you think it could
00:21:39have generally on the public opinion just before the
00:21:42elections? yeah, look, I see it two ways,
00:21:46okay, and I'll go back to what Marcus said,
00:21:50retiratory strikes, if it's just hitting buildings and uh
00:21:53and and showing battle damage assessment videos to the American public and how successful
00:21:57we were, it blowing things up, then I don't think the impact is anything, be quite
00:22:01honest with because it doesn't achieve anything, if the impact is fall
00:22:05of regime, if the impact is the opening the straight because there's
00:22:09nobody firing into either the bob uh bob
00:22:13almandab or into the straight of hormos and safe passages
00:22:16occurring and we're seeing a sense peace breakout.
00:22:20to the middle east, I think it has a positive impact, but right now the targets,
00:22:24at least, as axios reported, the possible targets that the
00:22:28president had mentioned earlier were Iranian energy, Iranian
00:22:31infrastructure and nuclear targets, none them included the
00:22:35IRGC by name, and none them include the possibility of taking the
00:22:39regime down, so retaliatory strides and massive assaults
00:22:42up to now, as you just said, eight months into a conflict, having
00:22:46achieved the desired result, in this case the desired result. will
00:22:50be uh the fall the regime, what it has done is limit their
00:22:53abilities to respond conventionally, but they still
00:22:57have, as far as we understand, they still have some enriched uranium, and they still
00:23:01have asymmetric capability that threatens the entire
00:23:04region, and addition, it's been threatening Great Britain and other
00:23:08allies throughout Europe, because their ability to leverage proxies and
00:23:12sleeper cells, so Iran continues to be a problem, and unless he
00:23:16addresses the problem, which is the regime, that
00:23:19I don't think he's as much headway in united states right,
00:23:23mr. colnel jonathan e sweet co-founder at internet
00:23:26360 retire from US army, thank you very much for taking time out for
00:23:30on full tonight, really appreciate. coming back to you, mark, what's your
00:23:34assessment, what is the likelihood the us getting
00:23:37militarily involved in support of Saudi Arabia again is given the
00:23:41fact there was an earlier statement or a stance on the part of president
00:23:45himself when he said publicly the truties have
00:23:49asked him not to go behind them after them,
00:23:52sorry, right? now i really doubt that
00:23:56president Trump is going to be willing to initiate any wide scale
00:23:59attacks at this point in support of Saudi Arabia ahead the
00:24:03midterms, simply because he's trying to manage oil prices and by
00:24:07extension gas prices to the average American consumer
00:24:11and ultimately voter. now after the mid-terms of November
00:24:143rd, he certainly all options are open. i would
00:24:18say it's notable that he came. out and uh
00:24:21stated um uh that uh he's considering strikes, so I think you can
00:24:25interpret that as messaging from President Trump uh to the hoothies that
00:24:29look, you may be uh
00:24:31you know uh creating a problem right now, but I'm going to be willing to solve it
00:24:35most likely later after the mid-terms and he'll certainly be free to do
00:24:39that uh and I think it's going to be needed because I think if you just step back and you look at the
00:24:43battlefield uh in the maps initially it was uh you know
00:24:47in the last 10 days or so Saudi Arabia the coalition. led by
00:24:50Saudi Arabian umini forces that were taking the initiative uh they were
00:24:54able to start sweeping toward the coastal plane to try to retake that
00:24:58territory, but in the last several days it's actually been the hoothis who regained
00:25:02the initiative in and around to the tas uh
00:25:05the the kind the political
00:25:09gold star that they want to win for themselves uh but they've been repuft
00:25:13so far um you know but also the the the Yumini back
00:25:17forces struggled in the marine i'm sorry the marib
00:25:20governant, which is a mountain this region to try to be a supporting operation to
00:25:24the coastal military operations, but that hasn't gone well either for the
00:25:28coalition, so definitely Saudis are going to need
00:25:31help, they're going to need it from the United States and they're going to need it from the Mecca
00:25:35agreement, because right now to me it's a
00:25:38stalemate. okay
00:25:41now um Mark, here's the interesting
00:25:44dimension now, there are multiple fronts for as
00:25:48hutis which... or they are involved on multiple fronts,
00:25:52when we talk about against the kingdom of Saudi Arabia itself, then
00:25:56in the Red Sea, the reports coming, there is an intensification, the
00:25:59fighting against the Yemini government itself, first... First of all, I want you
00:26:03understanding where where do the hoothies get this
00:26:06capacity from, and
00:26:10what's actually the basis of that? Also,
00:26:14while lot of countries, international organizations such as the UN and
00:26:18EU have condemned this airport attack,
00:26:21now European Commission president has also
00:26:25condemned it, but at the same time she has
00:26:28characterized the Hutis as Iran's proxies now.
00:26:32"there is another dimension when when we try to analyze this one, just
00:26:36few days back there was a possibility, there was an expression of
00:26:40interest on the part the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman
00:26:44that Iran's good offices could help mediate,
00:26:47resolve the crisis between kingdom of Saudi
00:26:50Arabia and the hoothies. looking at
00:26:54all these aspects, what's your conclusion,
00:26:57do we understand there is a direct backing for the capacity the Hothies when it
00:27:01comes to Iran?" " or if it is not there, could Iran play
00:27:05a mediating role at this point? no, that's a
00:27:09great question, and I think it really goes to the heart the problem that
00:27:13Iran has created for itself and for the rest the mide east. Iran
00:27:16clearly is behind this, the huties didn't find arms out of nowhere. uh, they're
00:27:20using Russian equipment, they have Iranian ballistic missiles and drones
00:27:24and the IRGC, have feed on the ground, boots on the
00:27:27ground inside controlled territory in
00:27:31Yemen. "and so clearly they are the sponsors
00:27:34of it, so it's a little bit too faced in my opinion for the Iranians to be coming
00:27:38out and saying they can broker a peace because they're actually behind this war
00:27:41in my opinion
00:27:43and so from that st i think it's it's tricky and don't just take my
00:27:46word for it, i think
00:27:47you know if you look to king abdullah the second of jordan back in
00:27:512004 uh
00:27:52you now we're talking 22 years ago now uh he warned the arab
00:27:56world that this uh access of resistance that was aimed at Israel
00:28:00think of that what you might uh" was also in effect the shia
00:28:04crecent that Iran was aiming at the sunni world
00:28:07uh and and it's come to firation, we've seen that just on the attacks that Iran has been willing
00:28:11to do during the Gulf war in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi
00:28:15Arabia and the like and the United Arab Emirates, and and now we've certainly seen it
00:28:19in terms of indirectly through the hoothies by them
00:28:22attacking Saudi Arabia, so I don't think
00:28:26Iran is that mediator uh simply because they're behind this, it's it's to
00:28:30their benefit right now to... second front and the
00:28:34hoothies are willing to do that. now i would just quickly add here the the hoothies
00:28:38act in many different ways, clearly the chief backer is around, but
00:28:42obviously they have their own interests, so this is just one angle, they
00:28:46have a long-term war against Saudi Arabia, but they're also willing to be allies
00:28:50to help Iran out, because in their minds it helps
00:28:52them out. okay, Mark, I'll come back to you, we're honored to being joined by
00:28:56another participant, miss Lee, and gented
00:29:00at arabia english, leave, thank you. much for being with us, once again
00:29:03taking time out for unfold, we really appreciate you being with us
00:29:07once again, a very critical moment when
00:29:11there are direct strikes against the civilian infrastructure by the
00:29:15hoothies inside kingdom of Saudi Arabia, could you
00:29:19give us an understanding what's the situation right now? there are reports
00:29:23the civil civil aviation
00:29:26disruption there as well visa with this airport as well,
00:29:30hundreds of flies either been canceled. or diverted,
00:29:34what's the situation on the ground as we
00:29:36speak? good evening to you, so the
00:29:40situation on the ground is that we have had official
00:29:43confirmation today from the civil aviation
00:29:47authority that injuries have been reported once
00:29:51again at the international airport here in Riad,
00:29:55King Khalid airport, there was a
00:29:58missile strike on the airport terminal four, this was...
00:30:02intercepted, however it did cause fire, so we are
00:30:06getting reports of injuries once again at the
00:30:10airport,
00:30:10and of course this comes after yesterday's strike on
00:30:14the airport inside of Riyad, which killed um 12
