00:02:26of Hello, I'm Chris Williamson and this is...
00:02:31of declassified, where we focus on the international struggle to liberate
00:02:33of
00:02:34in Palestine in and expose Israel's efforts to manipulate the political class and call
00:02:38manipulate the political class and corporate media. In today's
00:02:42show, we'll be scrutinizing the way's anti-terrorism laws
00:02:46to harass and intimidate
00:02:47of journalists and pro-palestine political activists. But before I
00:02:51talk
00:02:51in about this abuse with our
00:02:52of resident experts and our invited guests, this report
00:02:56of explains how Muslims in particular have been targeted and highlights.
00:03:00two specific examples of this
00:03:01crackdow: the British government's abuse
00:03:05of terrorism laws continues with the recent police detention of
00:03:09trainy lawyer and podcaster Amar
00:03:12of Khasmi, an active supporter
00:03:14of the Palestinian cause and the access of resistance. On the
00:03:1825th of
00:03:19me August, on the way
00:03:19هذا to his Honeymoon, Kasmi was stopped for several hours at London
00:03:23Heathro airport by British counter-terrorism police who
00:03:27questioned him about Palestine, Iran, in
00:03:30Lebanon. Kasme had appeared on Palestine declassified
00:03:34on many occasions and he recently traveled to Iran to cover the
00:03:37funeral of Ayatollah Khaminai, Iran's mattered
00:03:41leader. His detention is part of a broader picture of
00:03:44political activists and
00:03:46of journalists, particularly Muslims being harassed in Britain on
00:03:50behalf
00:03:50of the Zinist regime. Palestine declassified resident
00:03:54expert professor David Miller was also detained in questioned at
00:03:58London Heathrow airport. year
00:04:00of after traveling back from Lebanon. These detentions, which
00:04:04affect thousands of people every year, occur on the schedule
00:04:087
00:04:08of the Terrorism Act 2000. Under this power,
00:04:12people can be stopped, detained and subjected to highly
00:04:16intrusive questions, which
00:04:18of typically of cover political and
00:04:20of or religious beliefs and activities. Anyone can be stopped
00:04:24under this legislation without any suspicion of
00:04:27wrongdoing. The aim of a schedule seventh. is
00:04:30supposedly to determine whether someone is involved in
00:04:33commissioning, preparing or instigating acts of
00:04:38me terrorism, but in practice it's used against pro- palestine political activists
00:04:41and journalists to intimidate and spy on
00:04:45them. in 2014, sample taken by students at
00:04:48Cambridge University reveal that 88% of those
00:04:52stopped on the schedule 7 a particular airport were
00:04:56Muslim,
00:04:56of but these
00:04:57of intimidatory and spying tactics... go
00:05:00of far beyond the Muslim community. In 2013, the late
00:05:04David Miranda was detained at Heathro airport for
00:05:07carrying files related to information obtained by the
00:05:11whistleblower Edwards. Snowden and in April
00:05:142023, Ernest Murray, who works for the Independent
00:05:18Publishing House, Lafabr, was detained at St. Pancras
00:05:21International Station while on his way to a London Bookfair.
00:05:25La fabric produces books like the holocaust industry by Norman
00:05:29Finkelsten. Cozmi's recent detention on the schedule
00:05:33seven highlights the need for continued vigilance and
00:05:36campaigning against Britain's terrorism laws, which are
00:05:39increasingly being used to intimidate. and spy on
00:05:43pro-palestine activists inside the
00:05:45country. Alamar Kasmi is
00:05:49joining me today to discuss what happened to him and to consider the wider
00:05:53ramifications these intimidatory tactics. Amar is a political
00:05:57and legal commentator and the host the atrition podcast. I'm
00:06:01also joined as usual by resident experts and the UK's leading scholarly critic of
00:06:05Israel David Miller. David also
00:06:07is a co-director the Lobby in Watch Dog Spinwatch and a senior research
00:06:11fellow at the center for Islam and global affairs Istanbul Zahm
00:06:14University. Welcome to the show. Well, Almar, I mean tell
00:06:18us what happened to to you and and the sorts of questions that you were
00:06:21asked. Well, this all happened the day after my wedding.
00:06:25I was on the way with my wife to my honeymoon. I
00:06:29was at London Heathrow airport, and as I got to the
00:06:33gate to get onto the airplane, my boarding pass scanned
00:06:37red.
00:06:38I was taken to the side and uh, there were three plane
00:06:41clothed.
00:07:13so i think they thought that i was going to be very flustered, very shocked, very
00:07:16intimidated, but i wasn't at all, i was pretty composed, i have to
00:07:20say throughout the whole process, they then took me to room where they
00:07:24took my fingerprints, my cheek swabs, they took a 360 degree
00:07:28photograph of my face uh, what the purpose
00:07:32is really of of taking all of this stuff i don't know
00:07:35because um they've stopped me under this power for which they don't need any
00:07:39suspicion of wrong doing so as far as i'm concerned there's no suspicion that I
00:07:43have engaged any wrong-doing, so they have no suspicion that I'm engaged
00:07:46anything unlawful uh, so why they need all of this
00:07:50information uh is beyond me, I don't think it has anything to do
00:07:53with stopping terrorism, it's all about uh trying to harass me,
00:07:57intimidate me, and of course to intimidate other people and to gather
00:08:00intelligence uh on people and to keep them under surveillance a very
00:08:04dictatorial, authoritarian way. Uh, in
00:08:08terms the actual questions, I mean they didn't interestingly ask.
00:08:12me about any specific organization, they didn't ask me about Hamas,
00:08:16Hisbullah, the IRGC, they spoke
00:08:20in very coded ways about
00:08:24um
00:08:24men of violence and groups that some people would consider to
00:08:28be terrorists, but they didn't actually ask anything
00:08:32specific about those groups, I think it was obvious which groups they were
00:08:36alluding to, I was also asked about my recent trip to the
00:08:39Islamic Republic of Iran, of course I attended uh Iran earlier this year
00:08:43to uh cover the uh funeral
00:08:47of um Iran's martered leader ayatullah Khaminity and this was
00:08:51not something secret or covert I was very public about the fact that I was
00:08:55in Iran I was publishing videos and reports from Iran on the
00:08:59ground um I was also asked about
00:09:02my trip to Lebanon last year where I covered the funeral
00:09:06of Sayed Hasan Nasrullah and I should also just
00:09:10clarify this point that for both these trips I
00:09:14arranged my own visas, my own travel, I
00:09:18didn't, I was not the the lucky of
00:09:21any organization or
00:09:23government, um, I was free to
00:09:27travel and to do and say whatever I wanted to do and say,
00:09:31so no one was controlling me on either these trips,
00:09:34um, but basically they were trying to infer that or trying
00:09:37imply sorry that you know you were there and you were doing something
00:09:41defarious.
00:09:42probably on behalf
00:09:43of Hispalah or the IRGC, which is of course completely ludicrous
00:09:47and there's no evidence at all for that. um, we also spoke a
00:09:51little bit about the zionist entity
00:09:54and zionism and zionist
00:09:57infiltration in Britain, and I made that point actually
00:10:00that really the threat here is Zionism,
00:10:04there's no threat to Britain from the Islamic Republic of Iran
00:10:08or Hizbullah, Hamas, all this stuff is completely preposterous, but
00:10:12really in terms the questions I was being asked, I really failed to see what any
00:10:16of it had to do with supposed terrorism, as far as I'm
00:10:20concerned, this was attempt to interrogate me and my
00:10:24world view. uh a deeply authoritarian way, a
00:10:28way that is reminiscent of some the worst dictatorships that the
00:10:32the planet has ever seen. um, and this is
00:10:35how so-called, you know,
00:10:38democratic Britain treats its citizens. well,
00:10:42David, I mean, you were also stopped, weren't you were last February on your way back
00:10:46from from Lebanon, what was your experience similar
00:10:50to what ar went through? it was kind of
00:10:53similar, I mean, I think... the
00:10:56uh cops in his case seemed a little bit better briefed than my
00:11:00case, because what happened to me was that they my case, because what happened to me was that
00:11:03they clearly didn't have any idea who i was, what i had
00:11:07said, and had been bounced into stopping me by the
00:11:11fact that the zionist clutched their purls and managed to get the
00:11:14telegraph and the mail to report
00:11:17that this very bad man was coming back from beirot, so i was stopped for four
00:11:20and for four and a half hours and uh they didn't really know what to ask me.
00:11:25and uh they got progressively more and more embarrassing in
00:11:28their cross-examination of me, so I think the comparison with that armar
00:11:32cases is instructive because it kind of looked like at least one
00:11:35the the uh cops in his case was a little bit better
00:11:39briefed on matters and was able to be a little bit more sophisticated, I mean the
00:11:43questions in my uh case involved things like saying well
00:11:47what about all this terrorism that's happening uh in the UK
00:11:51do your friends and colleagues support that and I said what terrorism and they said
00:11:55well the southport attack and i said well not even the police think
00:11:59that that was a terrorist attack and his colleague sort of shame facedly
00:12:03said uh yeah that's correct and so it was just an
00:12:06embarrassment for them but um you know i think you you can go into
00:12:10these um uh interviews and uh be scared that they're going
00:12:14to somehow interrogate you or bring things out that you don't want to
00:12:17say but actually um my experience and it seems to some extent
00:12:21ours is that the people who are doing the interrogations are not really
00:12:25up to the they're trying to uh they're trying
00:12:29to uh uh pin you pin you
00:12:31with, I know George Galloway was saying buse he
00:12:35was also stopped wasn't he last last year and he's now
00:12:39in self-imposed exile is a consequence of that but he was saying that they
00:12:43said to him you're not under arrest but you're not free to leave and you must
00:12:47answer our questions you can't reserve your right to remain
00:12:51silent was was was that your experience as well well yeah the
00:12:55script, the standard script that they read to you and they actually give you a copy the script
00:12:59as well, that's the law that you yes, are not being arrested, you're
00:13:02being detained and you you can't leave and you have to
00:13:06answer the questions, but of course you can also ask for legal advice,
00:13:10you can have your lawyer present or you can speak to your lawyer in advance, which
00:13:14is what happened with me, and they will advise you what to say and what not to say,
00:13:18but you actually have to answer the questions, the other thing of course is
00:13:21that the answers you give in the questions can't be used in evidence again.
00:13:25so it's more or less about trying to gather uh
00:13:29insights for then further evidence
00:13:31to be gathered that of course is the
00:13:32real reason why people are stopped because they want to get their devices they want to
00:13:36understand yes yes who they know who they message and
00:13:39whatsapp and we've seen a case just recently where someone's
00:13:43being prosecuted for supporting a prescribed
00:13:47organization I think Hamas and instead
00:13:50of uh actually having any evidence against them what they've done is they've taken
00:13:54a speech that's persons made where they refer to the palestinian resistance
00:13:58etc. and they then tried to say what they really
00:14:01meant was Hamas, because when they looked
00:14:05whatsapp messages,
00:14:06there was a time when once upon a time they said something about Hamas,
00:14:10so it's an attempt to try and fit you up and to do also to find out who
00:14:14else you're in touch with, yeah, crazy, crazy,
00:14:18well, I mean, you're a law obiding citizen, and I mean, and you've previously
00:14:21worked in in parliament, so why do you think the police? to stop
00:14:25you? well, i think we have to ask what exactly
00:14:29is all of this about. of course they don't believe that i'm involved in
00:14:33terrorism. um, as i mentioned earlier, there was no
00:14:36suspicion that i have been engaged in terrorism, and they don't need
00:14:40suspicion in order to use this power. that's sort the point about it.
00:14:44this is about harassment. uh, if they, of course, if they believed
00:14:48that i was actually involved in some sort of terrorist
00:14:51financing, plotting, coordination. they would have
00:14:55arrested me and they would have charged me with something because you know i'm
00:14:59sure if they
00:15:00really thought i was a terrorist they'd be taking that very seriously they wouldn't have just stopped at an airport and then
00:15:03let me go on my way afterwards so the point of
00:15:07this principally in my view
00:15:09is about harassment uh law abiding citizen
00:15:13here law abiding citizen here in briton i previously
00:15:17worked in your i obtained a security clearance i obtained a
00:15:20security clearance in order to be able to do that so in order to be able to
00:15:24do that so at some point Britain
00:15:28thought that I was not a security threat and now they've decided that I
00:15:31am um for some reason obviously we know what the reason
00:15:35is it's because I support Palace. and I support the axis of
00:15:39resistance uh, that doesn't mean that I'm uh
00:15:43somehow trying to undermine British interest, actually I think that Britain's interests
00:15:47will be better served by being allies the Islamic Republic of Iran,
00:15:51the Axis of resistance of Palestine and of cutting diplomatic relations
00:15:54and all relations with the Zionist entity. um, that's
00:15:58my personal point of view. um, and
00:16:02look, the point these stops of course, also addition to harassment
00:16:06is about trying to... pain intelligence from people,
00:16:10because when you're in that position, they have really
00:16:14extreme powers that they don't have in other circumstances, so let's
00:16:18say you get arrested and the
00:16:21police take you to a police station, they don't have an
00:16:24automatic right to demand the pin codes to
00:16:28your phone, to your laptop, to devices that you may have on you,
00:16:32they need a warrant from a judge in order to do that, and
00:16:35they
00:16:36in order to get that warrant. they of course need to have some suspicion of wrong doing that maybe
00:16:40there's data on this device that will assist a police investigation.
00:16:44under schedule 7 they don't need any of that um suspicion,
00:16:48they can demand right there and then that you give
00:16:52them the pass code to your phone, they can uh then enter
00:16:56your phone, build a picture of your your
00:16:59personal network. this is all about intelligence gathering and
00:17:03community surveillance and i think it's also about.
00:17:07a signal that we as the british
00:17:11intelligence services, we as SO15 the Metropolitan
00:17:15police, we're keeping an eye on you, and this is about
00:17:18trying to deter any future work
00:17:22or future activism that someone might
00:17:25want to be engaging, and that's not going to work, it's not going to
00:17:29work against me, certainly if they think that by stopping
00:17:33at an airport and by questioning me and looking through...
00:17:37my you know devices that I'm going to get scared and
00:17:41intimidated by them and I'm going to therefore stop speaking out, I'm
00:17:45going to stop publishing, I'm going to stop appearing uh on programs like
00:17:49Palestine declassified, I'm going to abandon the Palestinian
00:17:52cause, then they have another thing coming, and I think
00:17:56that that should be everyone's attitude who stopped under
00:17:59this power, and thankfully it is, I mean of course professor David Miller, the
00:18:03resident expert the show is also stopped under this power and he's still going strong and I very
00:18:07much commend you, David for that, um,
00:18:10and we have to understand
00:18:14that uh, this power is not
00:18:17about genuinely trying to interrogate or to stop
00:18:21terrorism, it's about harassment, and once you understand that, I
00:18:25think that that gives lot of confidence. Well, David, I
00:18:28mean it seems these laws
00:18:29are are being weaponized by the Zies to to shut down support for
00:18:33for Palestine in the axis of resistance, I mean, is that fair?
00:18:37assessment do you think? well you say weaponize and of
00:18:41course the zionists are trying to weaponize and they're trying to
00:18:44push the police uh to arrest people who shouldn't
00:18:48otherwise be arrested. many these cases now we've seen
00:18:52have been the result of pressure put
00:18:56on the police or the home office or MI5
00:18:59by zionist groups you identified science groups uks
00:19:03for Israel campaign against anti-semitism etc. in my case of course the
00:19:08is taking a private prosecution against me because the police declined
00:19:11to prosecute me because I hadn't broken any laws, so that's how that
00:19:15works, but when you say weaponize, it's not correct in another sense. the
00:19:19legislation
00:19:19is itself a weaponization, it's not that they are abusing the
00:19:23legislation, the legislation actually makes it illegal to
00:19:27voice support for an organization in the sense of
00:19:31analyzing the activities of say hamas or palestinan islamic
00:19:34jihad or hezballah and and seeing things with might be said to
00:19:38be sympathetic to those organizations, now they don't really
00:19:42believe that we're going to set up a Glasgow branch of
00:19:45Hezballah or the South London branch of Hamas, they don't believe
00:19:49that's going to happen at all, but that is the implication the legislation and legislation is
00:19:53drawn so widely that it can catch anyone who who says something
00:19:57ill advised or or or loose about about Hamas
00:20:01or or Pig or whatever, but and that even
00:20:04by itself in the terrorism act 2000. didn't work, so they had to
00:20:08actually uh make the offenses even broader, so it's not
00:20:12just about supporting a prescribed organization, it's using words which might be
00:20:16interpreted as supporting such an organization, so a real attempt to kind of run
00:20:20a dragnet through society which doesn't allow people to speak
00:20:24openly about uh matters of political
00:20:26violence. would it be a stretch then to to say
00:20:30that the legislation then has been weaponized on behalf
00:20:34the the zionist lobby? well... think that's
00:20:38unfair, but the
00:20:39but the legislation itself was put in place uh, in
00:20:42part by pressure from the zionist movement way back in
00:20:46the in the day, mean the original legislation you'll recall..." was
00:20:50the prevention of terrorism brackets temporary provisions act in
00:20:531974 and it had to be uh had to
00:20:57be formally agreed by parliament every single year as
00:21:00result it was temporary until 2000 when they made it
00:21:04permanent and of course the the way in which they made it permanent and started to
00:21:07prescribe other organizations was as as result of zionist uh
00:21:11movement
00:21:12uh lobbing that's why we started to have this ridiculous list of
00:21:15organizations nothing to do with with Britain because the original list was only Irish
00:21:19organization. and they've started to add on all these palestinian groups, which of
00:21:23course nobody
00:21:24is going to start a branch of of those organizations in this country,
00:21:27that's what the legislation kind of assumes, so it's extended and extended the
00:21:31legislation, so legislation itself has been put in place with the under
00:21:35pressure from the zionis and then the zionist wanted to go even further than that,
00:21:39yes right, yes indeed, well, well,
00:21:42I mean, you're you're training to be a lawyer, aren't you, do you think the British
00:21:46terrorism laws are are really designed to to stop terrorism?
00:21:51"I think objectively speaking, you could say that Britain's
00:21:54terrorism laws have some relation to trying to
00:21:58stop, so-called terrorism,
00:22:01because
00:22:02you know, obviously they've designated various groups that I think everyone
00:22:06would would agree on nefarious groups that shouldn't be being financed,
00:22:09shouldn't be being supported any way, shape or form, alqidha,
00:22:13ISIS, things like that, um, the
00:22:17problem is though that the'. definition of
00:22:20terrorism is basically now meaningless, at least from
00:22:24legal standpoint. the classic understanding was that
00:22:27terrorism is the use of violence by non-state
00:22:31actors in order to achieve political ends. but
00:22:34firstly, what is violence, right? so the idea of what violence
00:22:38is has been expanding, now we have you a non-violent direct
00:22:42action network here in Britain call palestine action being prescribed as a
00:22:46terrorist organization, we have people holding placards saying: that they
00:22:50oppose genocide, that they support palestin action being arrested,
00:22:5480-year-old priests, uh, disabled
00:22:58people who are just uh protesting that being charged under the
00:23:01terrorism act, so uh, what is the meaning of violence,
00:23:05what is the meaning of terrorism, and um, even when
00:23:09it comes to the classic understanding of terrorism about state
00:23:13bodies, well they're now prescribing state bodies
00:23:17like the uh IRGC is of course part
00:23:21the Iranian state, but now that's been classed as a terrorist
00:23:24organization here in Britain. I mean, you kind of had that already with the prescription
00:23:28of Hamas's political wing and of Hizballah's political wing, Hamas of
00:23:32course being the elected government of Gaza, Hisbullah having two ministers
00:23:36in the Lebanese government, so in some ways you could say those are also
00:23:40sort of state actors, but with the prescription the IOGC, it's
00:23:44even clearer, so um, this
00:23:48is basically about. zionist wishes, this is
00:23:52zionist lobbying, zionist pressure, zionist
00:23:54infiltration, which is really damaging
00:23:58britain, britain britain's interests, indeed it's standing
00:24:01across the world, people just look at britain now, i think what's going on
00:24:05there, is absolutely absurd, they're calling everyone and everything a
00:24:09terrorist, so what they ought
00:24:11to be doing, and made this point in my interview is britain should be, like if we're going to
00:24:15have should be, like if we're going to have this terrorism apparatus and it's going to mean
00:24:19i anything, Britain should be present, they should be
00:24:23confiscating their funds, shutting them down, and of course Britain
00:24:26should be detaining and charging uh anyone going from
00:24:30Britain to fight in the Israel occupation forces, and we know that
00:24:34thousands of British Jews have done that, those people need to be tracked,
00:24:38followed, imprisoned uh, and they should be facing
00:24:42very large sentences uh in prison, and I think also Britain and
00:24:46the British intelligence services ought to be far more concerned about
00:24:50flag terrorism coming from the mossad then they should about you
00:24:54ficticious Iranian, lebanese or palestinian
00:24:56terrorism uh, which
00:24:59you know there's really no evidence for and is not a threat to britain. well
00:25:03David, I mean we've discussed this
00:25:05on on previous shows, but this seems to be further circumstantial
00:25:09evidence that the British intelligence services and police have
00:25:12been penetrated essentially influenced by the
00:25:16zionist lobby, isn't it? well, it does look...
00:25:20like that
00:25:20and of course it looks like that going back some some considerable distance in history,
00:25:24but in only the recent past we've seen all sorts of
00:25:28nonsense spouted by especially by
00:25:31MI5 about the threats that in relation to
00:25:35Russia and to do in relation to Russia and to China as
00:25:38well, but in particular the threat from the alleged threat from
00:25:42Iran, and that's of course why they've prescribed the
00:25:45IRGC, it's supposed to be running agents and running operations
00:25:49in the... which of course manifestly isn't, but
00:25:52the the reason that they say this is not just because they are
00:25:56incompetent and ideological, it's also because they've been pressured by the
00:26:00mosad and given information by the mosad, were the ones who supplied the
00:26:04information about this new pro Iran terror group, which of course doesn't exist, which
00:26:08has been made up in order that they could prescribe the IRGC, in
00:26:12order they could pass millions of more public money to
00:26:16zionist lobby groups, which themselves have close connections with the maside, so yeah the whole thing
00:26:20is a scam uh, but the but we're not allowed to say that because
00:26:23apparently that would be antisemitic, no indeed, and of course amar as
00:26:27he was saying there, I mean they didn't think he was actually a terrorist and I think
00:26:31he he's confirmed, I think... 'you no, what you're saying that this is really
00:26:35about you, intimidation and and just fishing
00:26:38exercise, well of course it is, mean i mean i've
00:26:42been stopped by the police uh way back in when when
00:26:45the the parts weren't even prescribed going to
00:26:49ireland and that that was just all about interpretation,
00:26:52i remember one time they said well you can go like now off you go on the boat quick it's going to
00:26:56shut soon and they knew
00:26:57it was already shot they just did it to to annoy us you know that's the
00:27:01long history the'. branch: sure, sure, no, indeed, indeed, indeed.
00:27:05Well, I'm afraid that's what we got time for today, so I'd like to thank our guest am
00:27:09Casby and of course our residents expert David Miller. If you want to support

00:29:33feminism I think is more that it doesn't link the
00:29:36struggle of for example Palestine Iran
00:29:40wherever
00:29:41to the fight against imperialism
00:29:43and if you don't fight against imperialism then
