00:03:03"I caught
00:03:03of up with Derek after he signed a contract with the Russian Army.
00:03:07Naturally, my first question was, what motivated a
00:03:1045-year-old American with three kids to put a Russian military
00:03:14uniform? I didn't just want to come and stay and take five
00:03:18or six years to get it, I wanted to actually earn it,
00:03:22um, earn our place in
00:03:25Russia, um, to show the country, our neighbors, our
00:03:28friends, the world that..." "we're loyal here, we want to be
00:03:32a here,
00:03:34of and um, you know, we're
00:03:35of honored to be here. there's training days are long gone,
00:03:39and he's now literally instrumental in one
00:03:41of the army's repair battalions fighting
00:03:44in a special military operation. that was his dream and intention
00:03:48when he initially signed up to use his professional expertise to the
00:03:52fullest extent in order to help his military comrades.
00:03:56i think
00:03:56in a repair battalion, um, all the the cages." that
00:04:00for drone protection, all the grills i can, i can build those with
00:04:04my eyes close, um, i used to fabricate uh real real fancy
00:04:08doors,
00:04:09a fence, very similar in construction, so yes, i think as a
00:04:13welder and fabricator, i could really contribute to the
00:04:16army, and that's where i hope to contribute, derick says that he and
00:04:20his wife made the decision
00:04:22of to emigrate to Russia together, following introductory trip to
00:04:26Moscow, they made up their minds, sold everything
00:04:29in the United. states packed up their belongings and just
00:04:32left. Derek had accepted the fact that he might not ever
00:04:36see some of his stateside family ever again. His main
00:04:40concern are his own wife and children whom he doesn't want
00:04:43indoctrinated by the so-called liberal propaganda targeting
00:04:47children. We knew we wanted to leave
00:04:49of America um and when we when we realized that that was where it was
00:04:53okay, where could we even go, because all the western countries are the
00:04:57a same, and I saw youtube video uh... the president Putin is
00:05:01Santa Claus and there's a little kid
00:05:05praying for Christmas wishes and there's there's LGBT books on the
00:05:08counter, gay parents, and I think the...
00:05:12might even be a boy might even be a dress possibly and president
00:05:16Putin the Santa Claus swoops in and uh
00:05:19you know boom everything changes and then there's a there's a new picture
00:05:22with a father and mother the books are gay books are gone there's a
00:05:26football and uh he answered the kids prayer
00:05:30and um and that really resonated with me because um i was like
00:05:34okay well they they feel the same way russias like like our morals
00:05:38you know they don't like gay and lesbian stuff and um
00:05:42so we started doing research. when we arrived at the training center at an
00:05:46undisclosed location, Derek's family were in Moscow, largely
00:05:50unaware of where their father and husband was and what he
00:05:54was up to. however, Derek's wife, Diana, knew about his
00:05:57mission and made sure her husband got to see her and the
00:06:01kids. I hope that you are being safe and you are making
00:06:05the right choices and that you um, don't try to be
00:06:08hero, come back alive to your family. I would tell... I miss
00:06:12him, he better be safe for else, when he
00:06:16when he comes back I can make him
00:06:18pancakes. Naturally, we offered
00:06:22Derek the same opportunity and he sent his family a video
00:06:26greeting as well. Hey Diana, hey girls, um, I love you
00:06:30very much, I'm very, very happy to get to send you this video, let you see my
00:06:33face, see I'm doing well, probably see i've lost few
00:06:37pounds, um, I miss yall more than you can imagine, and
00:06:41I can't wait to see you. um, hopefully I get vacation some
00:06:44point and I get to come home and spend a couple of weeks with you, but man,
00:06:48you're on my mind 24/7, and uh, just know
00:06:52that what I'm doing is important to me and important for our family, and I
00:06:56will do whatever it takes to be safe and to come home to
00:06:59you.
00:07:04A brand new passport and a brand new life. Once, a
00:07:08proud resident of Arizona Derek Hoffman now carries
00:07:11Russians. citizenship, decision his family sees not
00:07:15as a risk, but as confirmation that they finally
00:07:19found where they belong. for the half months, the US they left
00:07:23behind felt unrecognizable, marked, as they
00:07:27say, by rising crime, social tension and
00:07:30cultural shifts that no longer aligned with their
00:07:33Christian values, so they packed up their lives,
00:07:37crossed an ocean and chose Russia as the place
00:07:41to start again. so basically the situation was getting
00:07:45worse and worse by the day, um, we were seeing lot of changes happen
00:07:49just in the economy, in the people, and realizing
00:07:53that the area was not as safe as it was when we
00:07:57at first started having kids, um, we have six in total, I
00:08:01have three adult children back home and we have our three daughters
00:08:04and um, when I started raising my boys, it
00:08:08was a completely different atmosphere, having the ability...
00:08:12to go to the grocery store and not having a guard standing right there in front the grocery
00:08:16store before you walk in because it's just theft
00:08:20and fighting and it was just not safe driving down
00:08:23the road you need a gun on your hip because people are willing to
00:08:27have the um anger and frustration take over
00:08:31what they actually would normally do and um the
00:08:35road rage is insane and we've actually heard and seen
00:08:39people get shot at so the safety factor.
00:08:42is a big thing um LGBQ plus is literally put in
00:08:46all the news and all the
00:08:48um things that are
00:08:52uh tv shows and all of um
00:08:55man ads for just random people's places
00:08:59like Target for instance has an ad where two men are kissing
00:09:03and I'm like it just is so in your face and shove down
00:09:07your throat and your kids can't go anywhere or do anything and avoid
00:09:11it and we wanted to have a place that had the same morals and values
00:09:15as we did, we are strong Christians and we want to have our kids
00:09:19raised with a good foundation, so unfortunately we had
00:09:22to leave America, we tried to move from Arizona to Texas
00:09:26to be able to get a stronger Christian value in our kids,
00:09:30um, only to realize that the morals and values are lot
00:09:34the same thing there, they have a parade in Dallas for the
00:09:38LGBQ, um, a pride parade where they're literally...
00:09:42on the streets and just out in public and it's
00:09:46totally fine and welcomed and and loved by many and it was
00:09:50just really shocking to us and we knew we had to leave America because
00:09:54it was declining more and more. the pivot point came
00:09:58from an unexpected place, ATV commercial. in
00:10:02it they saw vision of family and tradition that they
00:10:05felt no longer existed back home. we
00:10:09saw um a commercial with putin and
00:10:13he did a uh Christmas kind of a
00:10:16situation where he was Santa Claus and gave the children the actual
00:10:20mom and dad for Christmas and all the correct toys
00:10:23and um we took that as
00:10:27a big eye opener at that point, like, wait a minute, they have the same
00:10:30beliefs as we do, they also believe that family should be a mom and
00:10:34a dad and it shouldn't be shoved down the little boy's throats to want to
00:10:38wear a dress or want to play with dolls or any kind of
00:10:42craziness with that, and knowing that the safety factor
00:10:45was a lot better of rate here
00:10:49percentage-wise, we didn't really have any other
00:10:53options, russia was the way. go now living
00:10:56outside Moscow with their three young daughters, the family
00:11:00says Russia has been more welcoming than they imagined.
00:11:04So I'd say the biggest thing that we've experienced as a family
00:11:07is the big hearts and the
00:11:11welcoming from the Russian people. I've never in my entire
00:11:14life of living in America experienced such uh
00:11:18amazing wonderful people and it's crazy to
00:11:21say, but I feel like this is the home that I never had,
00:11:25this is the family that I never had, being able to come here and have
00:11:29people just invite us to come over and be like, hey, I made
00:11:33this entire crazy spread uh for
00:11:36um women's day, we were here on the fifth, women's day was on
00:11:40the eighth, that's a couple of days, you never even met my family, now you're
00:11:44inviting us over for cake and champagne and breakfast and meat and
00:11:48cheese and all these beautiful amenities, like are are are you
00:11:52okay from offering homemade meals to... them hours
00:11:55into moscow to file document, neighbors stepped in
00:11:59like family. It's the kind of support the Huffman say,
00:12:03they never experienced in the US. I'm like
00:12:07confused, like people don't do that, they're scared to
00:12:10have you come into their house, because maybe you're going to take something
00:12:14or maybe you're going to destroy something, and it's just the mentality is
00:12:18completely different, um, different neighbor offered to
00:12:22take us to the grocery store when we first moved here and... and gave us few
00:12:26rides to get there and brought us back and different neighbor the other day
00:12:30we were talking to um we go on walks lot just to have more
00:12:33conversation and to build our skills um in the
00:12:37language
00:12:38she offered to drive me all the way to Moscow
00:12:41which from here
00:12:41is two hours one way and be able to pick up
00:12:45documents from our lawyer because getting our girls into school
00:12:49and having specific um documents from the school
00:12:53records back in America having them transcribed and tr and
00:12:56switched over into Russian um and then of course notarized that they're
00:13:00off um notarized their
00:13:03authenticity okay that didn't come out right um
00:13:07but the notarized copies to be able to make sure that they're actually real and
00:13:11legit and that's two hours there nobody does that in
00:13:15America you'll be lucky to get somebody to help you get gas if you
00:13:18run out of gas and you know these people so I'd
00:13:22say for me it was the biggest eye opener. that these people
00:13:26are real and they are authentic and they have heart of gold,
00:13:30like they truly want to help, and not because they want to see something in
00:13:34return, which is the mentality of how we were raised in
00:13:38America. Russian doesn't come easily, still lessons at home and
00:13:42daily practice are slowly turning foreign sounds into
00:13:45something that feels a little more familiar. So being
00:13:49here and being immersed in it has made
00:13:53it easier as far as wanting to learn the language
00:13:56more, we're having more and more connections with people that are in the
00:14:00area and just learning lot better through conversations as
00:14:04well, it's a cool language, me and my sisters have always wanted our own little personal
00:14:08language and so coming here and then having to learn a
00:14:12language, i thought that was very funny, um it is very
00:14:16hard but it has been pretty fun to learn, the new life took
00:14:19another dramatic turn when Derek enlisted in the Russian
00:14:23Army. his wife describes as faith
00:14:27driven, so there was definitely a lot of um
00:14:31questions, there was a lot of discussion
00:14:35and a ton more prayer, like we wanted to make
00:14:39sure it wasn't just a, oh willy nilly like, oh we'll get citizenship
00:14:43so let's just
00:14:44do it, um,
00:14:45there was a lot of prayer and lot
00:14:47of just making sure like, okay, well what if this happens, well what if
00:14:51this happens, well what about this, well what about that, and then it was...
00:14:55like, okay, well, I mean it makes sense, you're why, I totally, I
00:14:59get it, and it's like, um, I just, I don't know how I feel about
00:15:02it, let's pray, and then coming to that conclusion and making
00:15:06sure that it was a god thing, that it was like, all right, Lord,
00:15:10like, if you want him to join, and that's the path you want
00:15:14for our family, like everything else we've ever done in our lives, make
00:15:17it just the clear path, make it black or white, and if it
00:15:21is the path that we're supposed to take, just make sure that we know
00:15:25that that's that's the path because we don't want to make
00:15:29a wrong choice and go down the wrong path and god forbid lose
00:15:32my husband or have something go wrong or
00:15:36um
00:15:37i don't... like it just not be the path that he has for
00:15:40us um and we've always talked about that when a window closes a door
00:15:44will open and the door is always a god thing for us
00:15:48um as long as it's something that is clear to
00:15:51us that he has his hand over it um it was easier
00:15:55for us to go okay well he's going to come back safe like this is god's plan
00:15:59like he's he's going to be protected and this is the path we're supposed
00:16:03to take and
00:16:05mean if you've read in the bible at all you know but multiple people have
00:16:09gone through their sets of hardship, they said, hey, this is what I'm supposed to do,
00:16:13this is what God wants me to do, ended up a lions then, ended up a
00:16:16furnace, ended up before a giant, did they die? they did
00:16:20not, like they were protected, they had God on their side and God saying,
00:16:24hey, this is the thing I want you to do, this is where I want you to
00:16:27fight, this is the path I have for you, and of course in doing the
00:16:31thing that God asked them to do, yes it was scary, yes it was dangerous
00:16:35and of course we are fearful, um of something
00:16:39happening, but of course knowing that it's a god path, it
00:16:42doesn't matter what you put in our way, like if this is the way he wanted us to
00:16:46do, this is the best best way for us to do it. she
00:16:50says serving was always a dream, but one he
00:16:54never fulfilled in the US. he had always thought that joining the
00:16:58military would be um a thing that he
00:17:02would want to do, in America he was never even able to
00:17:05because the um... his age
00:17:09or uh the ability to be fit enough or whatever the
00:17:12requirements were at that time, he never thought that he would be able to
00:17:16join. um, the the the
00:17:20military of America is the
00:17:23discipline and the you know actually making sure you're
00:17:27doing things as morals and values,
00:17:30and um, I am so grateful that he did not join there in the
00:17:33military, because I feel like it's a different,
00:17:37set of thought process as the morals and the values
00:17:41as it is here, you actually have a basis of morals and
00:17:44value and to be able to um be with
00:17:48like-minded people who actually want to see the country
00:17:51succeed and they know that we're fighting for a good cause,
00:17:55not just to fight or start a war or actually have
00:17:58issues, there's um the ability to
00:18:02stop the evil going on and to be able to make sure that the
00:18:06people here are safe. and that there is um just a
00:18:10connection since we've been here to to want to be part
00:18:14of society like we've never wanted to be part of society before
00:18:17where people are actually on the same page and they actually want
00:18:21to see you succeed and they want to
00:18:24be able to be part of that and the sharing is so
00:18:28amazing he was around a group of guys and he offered the
00:18:32one guy some um of his snacks and it was the
00:18:35snickers bar cuz he was was eating snickers bars and he they're just like these little
00:18:39mini snicker bars, it's not like this big old snicker bars and he offered him
00:18:43one and the guy took it and then he broke it in half to offer to someone else and i
00:18:47almost lost it, i was like you don't see that in america, you
00:18:51just don't, someone gets a cickers b the're like thanks and they eat it because
00:18:55they're so worried about making sure they get theirs, but here
00:18:59it's the opposite like they're like i want to share with somebody else
00:19:03so they feel the sames i'm feeling as the grateful and
00:19:07the... the enjoyment of whatever it is that they're getting to
00:19:10experience and just being around people like that was just
00:19:14it was no-brainer um seeing the signs saying that you and your family would
00:19:18get citizenship he was like it's done i could actually go in and be
00:19:22able to make sure that my family has citizenship i what more could
00:19:26i want? derek is now away with his unit and the
00:19:29family is counting down the days until he returns when
00:19:33we asked the girls about their father the room felt.
00:19:44Of course I miss him um having him here on regular basis
00:19:47making all the funny jokes that he usually makes and making things
00:19:51light-hearted and laughing about things and um him
00:19:55being able to lay the hammer
00:19:57and and be that rock and be able to make sure that you know things are going
00:20:01the way they're supposed to go and things are getting done and lists are
00:20:05made so that we make sure to stay on track. mean it
00:20:08is um it is hard not having that,
00:20:12not having your significant other to be able to help guide you and help
00:20:16be with you and um hold you at night to be able to say hey
00:20:20you know everything's going to be okay like it is difficult for
00:20:24sure and i 100% miss him i was going i knew this was
00:20:28going to happen soon cuz we prayed that he would make
00:20:31it and but when i heard he was going to move
00:20:35mean going to to the military. really i felt very
00:20:39sad and tried tried making every moment i can
00:20:43exciting and not bad ones. pretty sad
00:20:46because i really love him and i don't want him to go. he is hero,
00:20:50he's a hero to our family and he is hero to
00:20:54um pretty much every Russian person we've talked to,
00:20:57because there are so many people that are here in Russia that are true
00:21:01Russians that were born Russians that would not be
00:21:04courageous enough to stand up and say, "I'm going to fight, I'm going
00:21:08to fight for the country, I'm going to fight for what's right, I'm going to make
00:21:12sure that as a people succeed, because
00:21:16we already feel like we are Russian, so to be able to..."
00:21:20be on this side of things and to be able to fight for what we
00:21:24truly believe in is an amazing
00:21:27opportunity. i'd say i really miss him, i would say
00:21:31miss you and i wish you would heal, and i would say when
00:21:35he when he comes back i can make him pancakes. i would tell him that
00:21:39miss him. he better be safe or
00:21:42else. the family is now taking steps toward full
00:21:45citizenship. the children have joined a private school where each
00:21:50brings new lessons, faces and small
00:21:53discoveries. For the halfmans, Russia is more than a
00:21:56destination, it's the start of something new.
00:22:00Each day carries its own challenges and chances

00:22:07already feels like home. Anastasia Valodina,

00:25:00reality. i think the cold war began with the death of
00:25:04rosevelt and churcher was a cold
00:25:08warrior.
00:25:11der hatte die idee, Russland mit
00:25:15Hilfe der der deutschen Kriegsgefangenen, das waren
00:25:19100taus.
00:25:29across the continent,
00:25:31has descended operation unthinkable and pincer and
00:25:35broiler and bushwacker uh and drop
00:25:38shot, I mean all these were essentially plans to
00:25:42directly attack and destroy the Soviet Union. Why did the
00:25:46peace so many had longed for give way to new protracted war?
00:25:51When exactly did the post war world take faitful
00:25:54turn?
00:26:06NATO is preparing to rewrite the rules the game. For
00:26:10the first time since the cold war, the alliance is debating the
00:26:14right to a preemptive strike on Russia, without
00:26:17pretext or declaration of
00:26:20war.
00:26:26Concrete steps are being taken to lay the ground work
00:26:30for the next war. NATO involvement in the
00:26:34Ukrainian conflict is part of a hybrid
00:26:37war. The alliance is participating in the war against
00:26:41Russia under the guise of instructors. It's
00:26:45NATO countries who encourage the Ukrainian nazis to destroy
00:26:49everything that's linked to
00:26:51Russia.
00:27:02"It's all they ever wanted. If
00:27:06Vladimir Putin had not acted, you wouldn't be
00:27:10here right now, because there wouldn't be a here right now. I
00:27:14would be dead. Um, half the people in this town would be
00:27:17dead, most of Dumbas would be
00:27:19dead.
00:27:34I've spent years in conversations beyond
00:27:37borders, some were formal,
00:27:41some tense, some
00:27:42difficult, but all them
00:27:46mattered. They chartered
00:27:50India's path and how the world
00:27:53responded. Foreign policy is in
00:27:56theory, it is lived in arguments
00:28:00in decisions. and in their
00:28:03consequences. It's not an interview, it's a
00:28:07conversation. Let's
00:28:10talk.
00:29:05ban territories, let's go,
00:29:09crimeia here in Iran, we've traveled
00:29:12to Lugansk, and it's happening right here in China. It's
00:29:16actually quite a beautiful day here,
00:29:20ignored stories, I'm listening, thank you so much, thank
00:29:24you so much, so great to see you, really, God bless
00:29:27you, forbidden questions, I'm asking them, what's a
00:29:31free country? Are you worried, are you scared? we rusky, are you
00:29:35dictator? are you thinking about creating something? not planning to run
00:29:39for president. we will show you what they
00:29:47more people watch RC in the United States and see, I did
00:29:51not know that. that's the Sanchez effect. tens of
00:29:55millions are now watching, and we're just getting
00:29:58started.
00:30:21He is eager to seize upon any words, initiatives or ideas
00:30:25entering the public discourse, so he can push for some breathing room.
00:30:29Russia's foreign minister right there, dismissing Vladimir. cease
00:30:33fire calls as a ploy to regroup Ukraine's
00:30:36forces. That's after Keyev demanded the guns fall
00:30:40silent for 60 days to allow for
00:30:42elections. The more we help Ukraine, the sooner the war will
00:30:46be over. And Brussels adopts yet another package of anti-Russia
00:30:50sanctions for the EU hoping its 22nd round of
00:30:54restrictions will do what the previous 21 have failed to
00:30:57do. And that's the ultimate goal of bringing.
