00:45:30made of rubberized heavy material, and they might not
00:45:33have survived to our days, but all this was available and
00:45:37should have withstood even more than plastic. The thing
00:45:40is, it will penetrate the net,
00:45:52but the point is that your autopilot breaks, because
00:45:56you have an impact, and
00:45:59part of the control surfaces break, the wings,
00:46:03well, the wings break, that's it, it won't fly further, it will just
00:46:06go into an uncontrolled flight, eventually a Soviet aerostat.
00:46:41The first attempt to shoot down cruise missiles in this
00:46:45way occurred in Yugoslavia in 1999.
00:46:49Aerostats were not used there, cars were used.
00:46:57they were placed along the river valleys and between these
00:47:00cranes they stretched, well,
00:47:03simply a metal net made of
00:47:06a thin steel cable,
00:47:09and in general, several cruise missiles were
00:47:13shot down. After the bombings of Yugoslavia, Russian
00:47:16military once again became interested in cable
00:47:19barriers. At the turn of the century, commissioned by the Ministry of Defense,
00:47:23they developed an aerostat system against cruise missiles
00:47:26based on modern materials and technologies.
00:47:30They tested the barrier at a test site with a mockup of a Soviet
00:47:33cruise missile installed on a railway
00:47:36trolley. Well, they accelerated
00:47:40the entire trolley with a rocket booster, then the trolley
00:47:44braked, and the mockup came off it and flew by
00:47:47inertia, that is, a big gunpowder
00:47:51slingshot.
00:48:22a knife passes through a slice of butter,
00:48:26but in reality it turned out not to be quite so. The butter
00:48:30also showed itself, but
00:48:32the knife suddenly broke. Well, it all
00:48:36ended in nothing. The project was somehow classified
00:48:39and put on the shelf, and the saddest thing
00:48:43is that in Russia we
00:48:45don't produce aerostat fabrics, that is,
00:48:49what is being built now is imported material,
00:48:53it's China, Taiwan, Korea and other countries. Unfortunately,
00:48:56the Dolgoprudny Design Bureau of Automatics was responsible
00:48:59for this. They conducted
00:49:02research work many times, but
00:49:05there is no mass production of aerostat
00:49:09fabrics. On one refueling,
00:49:12aerostats can spend several days in the
00:49:15air, then they just need to be released for
00:49:19gas top-up. Yes, the weather was difficult, there
00:49:22was heavy rain, so it needs to be
00:49:26replenished. Modern aerostats are usually filled with helium,
00:49:29a volatile and safe gas. The era of hydrogen airships
00:49:33ended back in 1937
00:49:36after the crash of the Zeppelin Hindenburg.
00:49:39The air giant, 245 meters long,
00:49:42made a transatlantic flight from Germany to
00:49:46the USA. And during mooring, 200,000
00:49:49cubic meters of gas flared up like a candle.

00:50:03But the helium that replaced hydrogen is an expensive and scarce
00:50:06gas. Therefore, the developers of the barrier system decided
00:50:10to fill their aerostats with so-called
00:50:13phlegmatized hydrogen, a gas with added special
00:50:17additives. The advantage of this hydrogen is that, first, it
00:50:21is, of course, the price, and... when fueling,
00:50:24and the lifting force, according to calculations, will even
00:50:28be higher than that of helium, by about five or 7%,
00:50:31but for large apparatuses, this plays a significant role in lifting,
00:50:35in gaining lifting force. That's it, fueling begins,
00:50:38supply hydrogen.
00:50:41The main advantage of this phlegmatized hydrogen mixture is that it is not
00:50:45flammable or
00:50:45explosive.
00:50:49So, can you shoot down this aerostat with a machine gun?
00:50:53It's very difficult to do, that is, if bullets hit
00:50:56it, the shell will simply be pierced through and through,
00:50:59and hydrogen will slowly escape from it, that is,
00:51:03it will not ignite, it will not explode. So,
00:51:06it will continue to hang until it loses, so to speak, its
00:51:10positive buoyancy in the air. But if a kamikaze
00:51:14drone crashes into it and explodes there, for example,
00:51:17with 20 kg of explosives,
00:51:20then the hole will be larger. the shell will tear, all the gas
00:51:24will escape from it very quickly, and accordingly, it
00:51:27will fall. At the same time, it is possible to patch the
00:51:30aerostat shell directly in the field. Also,
00:51:33hydrogen is produced on site in a mobile
00:51:37truck installation. Water for electrolysis can be taken even from
00:51:40a nearby river. The cost of producing hydrogen on site,
00:51:44excluding capital expenditures for the installation, will be
00:51:48approximately 45-50 rubles per cubic
00:51:51meter. The cost of helium is many times more, that is,
00:51:55well, tens of times more.
00:51:58To lift an aerostat barrier system with
00:52:01phlegmatized hydrogen costs approximately eight
00:52:05thousand rubles, and 300,000 with helium. The difference
00:52:09is significant.
00:52:12Aerostat systems can be placed on any transport
00:52:15vehicles, on pickups, on quad bikes, on special
00:52:19all-terrain vehicles. Anywhere, with a small
00:52:22cylinder, we can inflate this aerostat, lift
00:52:26the necessary payload to the required height,
00:52:30and all this is very fast and efficient, deploy it and
00:52:33then change it.
00:53:07but for now, the hydrogen revolution starts with aerostats and
00:53:11heavy hexacopters. Fuel cells that
00:53:14convert hydrogen into electricity of domestic
00:53:17production,
00:53:20they are almost four times more efficient than imported
00:53:23lithium batteries. How far can it go? It all
00:53:27depends, of course, on the wind speed and the task. Well,
00:53:30I think it can easily fly 200
00:53:33km.
00:53:36After refueling, the aerostats are checked for gas
00:53:39leaks. Six particles per million is a very good
00:53:42indicator, almost hermetically sealed, carefully.

00:53:51With the umbilical cords pulled tighter, the aerostats
00:53:55are once again rolled out of the hangars for testing. Of course, they
00:53:58remembered these aerial barriers not because
00:54:02the country had exhausted all means of defense
00:54:05against Ukrainian drones. On the contrary, there are
00:54:09plenty of various proposals and methods. Recently,
