00:04:00negotiations with Iran were positive, he immediately followed that up with a
00:04:04threat to resume military operations. It remains unclear

00:04:14of transit the straight are not an option. As you know, the
00:04:18mediators, Qatar, Pakistan, and now Oman are all working together
00:04:21on on that issue, we are coordinating very closely with the Omanies to facilitate
00:04:25the talks between both sides and exchanging ideas. Marine traffic
00:04:29data. on Wednesday shows about 10 commercial ships passed through the straight of
00:04:33Rom in about 25 hours, as the standoff over the straight
00:04:37continues, so do the rising costs for American
00:04:40of consumers and the global economy.

00:05:13the straight?
00:05:20alreagan, iran says that deal with oman about the roots

00:05:32condition and other conditions have to be met before
00:05:35Tehran reopens the straight of almost, probably
00:05:39the most important stumbling block in reopening the... from

00:05:46Iranian ports and coastline. Iran has long said that
00:05:50the United States should end this blockade. Also Iranians are
00:05:54angry over the threats of military action by the United
00:05:58States. Basically, Iran wants the United States to
00:06:02return to the Islamabad memorandum of
00:06:04understanding. That would be that the United States
00:06:08would say that war on Iran has ended and stop making
00:06:12threats. against Iran, that would also include the United
00:06:15States granting wavers to Iran's sanctioned oil and
00:06:19oil and petrol chemical products, it also includes release
00:06:23of Iranian frozen assets and also included
00:06:27is Israel stopping its attacks on Lebanon, so there are
00:06:31plenty of conditions for Iran in order for it to
00:06:35reopen the straight of our moves, what Iranians want at this moment, and this is
00:06:39something that President has said, Iran should... force the
00:06:43United States to return to the Islamabad memorandum of
00:06:46understanding oman seems to
00:06:49have you sufis as the key intermediary once
00:06:52more. um is it safe to say that uh Iran
00:06:56trusts oman in ways it clearly does not trust trust

00:07:20and obviously the United States and Israel

00:07:28out massive war on Iran twice as Iran and the United States
00:07:32were in the middle of negotiations, but also what Iran argues
00:07:36is that according to international maritime law, the
00:07:40coastal states of waterway have... the right to
00:07:43discuss the administration of it, and those coastal states
00:07:47are Iran and Oman, basically Tehran says that the United
00:07:51States as a country that is not in the region has no
00:07:54right to be included in the talks
00:07:58about the administration the state of

00:08:09us through President Trump's optimism? that a broad, a broad
00:08:13deal is
00:08:14possible?
00:08:19well, he certainly projecting optimism, whether he really feels
00:08:23it is another matter of course, because this clearly is not going his
00:08:27way, but he had to give reason for calling off what he
00:08:31described as plans for the biggest attack since World War
00:08:35II, few days ago, and so he said that
00:08:39that's because
00:08:40that the talks are proceeding between the American... and the Iranians and it's
00:08:44all going very well and the deal is imminent
00:08:48uh, but he he knows it's not going well uh
00:08:51the Iranians of course are denying they're even talking to the US so we don't know
00:08:54which these narratives is true, but you can
00:08:58sense trump's increasing frustration, mean for example he's
00:09:02posted on true social this morning uh
00:09:05about the weapons that vital weapons being
00:09:09uh low in stock, you have been many... claims
00:09:13that the U.S. is running out of some of its more
00:09:16important missiles, Trump has rubbished that in the true social
00:09:20post, and described those sorts of comments as treason,
00:09:24saying that uh long jail sentences will be
00:09:28sort for those making those claims, it's all sort of language you hear
00:09:32in dictatorships, but it shows just how
00:09:35sensitive all this is to Donald Trump at the
00:09:38moment, uh, he's vered, as we know from these...
00:09:43threats to attack Iran right through saying the
00:09:46negotiations are going very well, it's this continuing cycle which has been
00:09:50going on really for months now uh so he's
00:09:54got he has to have great hope for these latest negotiations because
00:09:58he's really running out of options okay John appreciate the
00:10:02reporting thank you John Breenan Washington DC
00:10:05okay for more analysis on this let's bring in Alive Vayez who is in
00:10:09Geneva he is the director of Iran project. and senior
00:10:13advisor at the international crisis group. Ali, thank you
00:10:16for appearing on the program. When you hit optimism
00:10:20from Washington, but much more caution from
00:10:23Terran. Does this say anything to you about the
00:10:27prospects the
00:10:28escalation?
00:10:35Well, look, I think a deal between Iran and Oman is
00:10:39imminent, and that's a step forward and would
00:10:43open the door to the possibility of reopening the
00:10:46straight, but it is not tantamon to opening
00:10:50the straight, because as your correspondent in Tehran said, the Iranians
00:10:54do... that the US would meet other
00:10:57commitments as outlined under article 13 the
00:11:01mou, which would require the lifting the US blockade and
00:11:04sanctions relief for Iran as well as the end of
00:11:07hostilities in Lebanon for Iran to then comply
00:11:11with its own obligation under the mou and
00:11:14reopen traffic through the straight, so the iran oman
00:11:18agreement is important because it puts in place
00:11:21mechanism that is acceptable to all the key stakeholders. for managing
00:11:25traffic, but it's insufficient to make that happen. I
00:11:29on Iran's agreement with Oman, do you think Taran can
00:11:32realistically separate a commercial shipping
00:11:35agreement from the continued US military
00:11:39presence in the
00:11:40Gulf?
00:11:48Well, yes, because by controlling the inbound
00:11:52traffic through its own territory.
00:11:56Iran would be able to ban and
00:11:59bar US warships from coming back into the Persian
00:12:03Golf, and once you control what
00:12:06comes in, you basically control what goes out, and this is
00:12:10why controlling the states from security
00:12:13perspective is so important to the Iranians, is not really the
00:12:17monetizing dimension here, that is the number one
00:12:20priority, is the security dimension, and from that
00:12:24perspective I the Iranians would meet their objective. now, of course, that's
00:12:27not the same as the US withdrawing all of its
00:12:31offensive capabilities from Iran's near
00:12:34abroad, but that could happen if the two
00:12:38sides return to the negotiations and move
00:12:41diplomatically towards a final agreement. before I let you
00:12:45go, I'm hoping you give us better understanding of
00:12:49what's what people in Iran are thinking and saying, and of
00:12:53course of Iran's internal politics. between those who want
00:12:56economic relief and those who believe confrontation
00:13:00still serves Iran's uh best interest. Which do you think is the
00:13:04more compelling argument for
00:13:06Iranians?
00:13:13Look, it's very hard to generalize sentiments within a
00:13:17nation of 90 million, there are differences of opinion
00:13:21across the board, but what I think is important to take into
00:13:25account is that this is a country that has been a constant state of
00:13:28crisis now for about year and a half, and
00:13:32it's economic situation is just terrible, and that's
00:13:36why people would, I think broadly welcome
00:13:39some sort of economic reprieve and return to a degree of
00:13:43normalcy, but there are also hardliners who
00:13:46are ideologically opposed to any kind of agreement with
00:13:50the United States and are going to continue to be quite vocal
00:13:54about it, unlike in the United States where the
00:13:57hardliners are actually in the Trump administration
00:14:01and are powerful, the hardliners in Iran are mostly vocal but
00:14:05not very powerful, the group the small group of people
00:14:09who are calling the shots today, they're more or less on the same page, and if they
00:14:12make a decision,
00:14:14it is probably a pragmatic decision that serves their interest. interesting,
00:14:18all right, oliv is at Iran project and of course at the international crisis

00:14:25Yemen's Iran aligned Hothies have confirmed a missile attack on yet
00:14:29another Saudi linked oil tanker. The group says the vessel was targeted in
00:14:33the Gulf of Eden. On Wednesday they also claimed responsibility for the
00:14:37attack a Saudi tanker off the coast the Red Sea port of
00:14:40Yanbu. These latest attacks come as the Houthies step up pressure on
00:14:44Saudi Arabia after imposing naval blockade in the Red Sea last
00:14:48month over what they call a Saudi siege of Yemen. The
00:14:52Israeli, the Israeli. military says two of
00:14:56its soldiers have been killed and eight wounded during combat in
00:15:00southern Lebanon. The strikes on Wednesday were in retaliation to what Israel
00:15:03described as Hezballah violations the seasfire. It also edged
00:15:07residents the village of Monsuri to evacuate claiming it was
00:15:11targeting and destroying Hezbulah infrastructure
00:15:14there. Our correspondent Priyanka Davani is
00:15:18in Beirout with the latest. The
00:15:21Israeli presence in southern Lebanon is certainly being felt.
00:15:25by the residents of Southern Lebanon, many of whom have just made
00:15:29their way back to Southern Lebanon in the last couple
00:15:33of weeks or months following the end of this full-blown
00:15:37war. As we have said time and time again, there is nothing
00:15:41more that residents of Lebanon, particularly southern Lebanon
00:15:44want than simply to be back in their homes. It
00:15:48has been a long time since they have permanently been
00:15:52able to be back in their homes, whether we're talking about the rise of
00:15:56violence since 2023, sort of that slow simmering
00:15:59war, the full-blown war in 2024, the fall of
00:16:032024, and then again in the spring of
00:16:06200. 26, so many these residents desperate
00:16:10to be home, but then once again we saw intense Israeli
00:16:14air strikes on the area of Burjas Shameli. now people may not
00:16:18know Burge Shameli, but they definitely know the city of Tyre.
00:16:22this is very famous ancient phinician
00:16:25city, it's home to some of Lebanon's best beaches. we were
00:16:29just there the other day speaking to the Lebanese, the hundreds of
00:16:33people that had populated the newly reopened public
00:16:37beach. entire, but once again, people having to flee
00:16:40that area because the intensity the
00:16:44Israeli strikes there, and Lebanese diplomatic
00:16:47sources are saying this is in fact the Israeli
00:16:50response to the Lebanese demands being made in Rome,
00:16:54of those demands, of course, a complete cessation
00:16:58of hostilities, and also the expansion these
00:17:02pilot zones, these pilot zones being part the US,
00:17:06Israeli, Lebanese. this framework that was brokered ultimately at the end
00:17:10of June that calls for there to be certain essentially test
00:17:14areas that the Lebanese army goes into and takes
00:17:18over and then the the Israeli army ultimately
00:17:22withdraws from and this
00:17:25uptake that pr just talked about is violence playing out against the backdrop
00:17:29the final day of peace talks in Rome between Israel and Lebanon on the
00:17:33agenda outstanding issues relating to the next phase of a
00:17:36gradual israel withdrawal from southern Lebanon under a US
00:17:40broker framework deal. Diplomats are also looking into working a
00:17:44comprehensive peace and security agreement. Well from on this,
00:17:48I'm joined by Alina Trabatoni in Rome Rome. Hi there Alina,
00:17:52it's good seeing you. So just remind us please, our audience, what was agreed in
00:17:56the June framework and what's on the
00:17:58agenda? Well,
00:18:02on the June Agreement, which was signed on June 26th in the
00:18:06United States. Uh, there were several lines of agreement,
00:18:10one, first and foremost was uh, push towards
00:18:14the end of hostilities. Uh, secondly, the
00:18:17idea of rolling out some pilot zones, obviously,
00:18:21creating some safe spaces and adding more and more
00:18:24territory as the safety and tranquility the zones
00:18:28is guaranteed and secured, uh, and obviously that
00:18:32involves lot also the interaction between the north and the
00:18:36south and - Obviously the disarmoment
00:18:39of any armed groups in the area and the
00:18:43release the southern Lebanon area by uh the
00:18:46Israeli army, the Israeli troops.
00:18:50Ana, as far as
00:18:51I understand, has not been present at these talks, why and how much does
00:18:55their absence
00:18:56matter? Ah,
00:19:00well, they had set some conditions to participate
00:19:03any talks and obviously their absence is...
00:19:07very uh important and determining factor
00:19:11uh surely in what the outcome these talks will be,
00:19:14because they are one the military parties
00:19:18involved on the ground uh with everything that's going on,
00:19:22so uh, you know, it's it's almost, it seems almost
00:19:26complicated to reach an agreement without one the parties
00:19:29there. uh, addition, hasbul uh also uh
00:19:33has uh wide support and also has uh
00:19:37political movement uh that is uh very
00:19:41operational in Lebanon, so uh, lot
00:19:45hinches
00:19:45on uh,
00:19:45you know, what the outcome is, and you know, having
00:19:49Heizballah signing off on it uh, as well as the,
00:19:53you know, uh, political arm of Hezballah as well uh, to
00:19:57ensure that it all plays out and works on the

00:20:06correspondent. kassim who is an occupied east Jerusalem, it's
00:20:10always good to seeing you, my friend. the turkish foreign minister, hakan
00:20:13fidan just yesterday met with Jordan's foreign minister
00:20:16today's, he's been courting so to speak Muslim countries
00:20:20in the region all discussing how Israel has been
00:20:24breaking cease fire after cease fire. do you think Israel
00:20:28is concerned or worried at all about these
00:20:30talks?
00:20:34absolutely Reagan, Israel never is in favor. of
00:20:38any regional uh country in the size of Turkia
00:20:42or anyone who um tries to expose
00:20:45its violations of international law of human
00:20:49rights and also exposes its genocidal war in Gaza,
00:20:53its occupation in the occupied West bank and occupied East
00:20:56Jerusalem and also working to unify in
00:21:00Arab and Muslim majority countries and also speak
00:21:03in one in one voice. That is something that Israel does
00:21:07not like and this is why Israel has been critical of
00:21:11Turkey because Turkey works together with the
00:21:14regional countries to try to bring about a
00:21:18united front in export. using Israel and ending the occupation,
00:21:22so this is something that that does
00:21:24not sit well with Israel, specifically with
00:21:28the continued storming and violations
00:21:31the Islamic and Christian holy sites
00:21:35in occupied is Jerusalem, and also the statement that Turkey
00:21:38stands united behind the Jordan who is the custodian
00:21:42the holy sites in the occupied city, again this is
00:21:46something that does not set well with Israel and Israel uh... like to
00:21:50see a united front coming in from arab and muslim countries criticizing,
00:21:54exposing its occupation and violations. Reagan. I guess
00:21:58you kind of answer my second question to you, as you know uh, Israel
00:22:02has been holding talks with the Jordanian government in Rome, since
00:22:06Israel does not like a United Front, I guess it does not bother
00:22:09Israel that Hezbollah has not not been at those
00:22:12talks.
00:22:16Well, uh, neither s, neither party wants to see.
00:22:20Hizballah on the negotiating table, not
00:22:24Israel, as it doesn't even consider Hizballah a
00:22:27party that it will speak to giving the fact that it considers Hispallah a
00:22:31terrorist group, but also Hizballah is not going to sit well with or
00:22:35sit on the same negotiating table
00:22:38as with Israel, and he Hisball has been critical
00:22:42the Lebanese government and its negotiations,
00:22:46direct negotiations with Israel, but Israel wants several things.
00:22:50out these negotiations, first it wants the Israeli
00:22:54army to assert its control um in in in southern
00:22:58Lebanon and disarm Hizballah, this is the main goal, disarming
00:23:01hizballah is something that Israel will not give up
00:23:05at this point, but also Israel wants something that is
00:23:09way beyond these talks, which is normalization deal
00:23:13with Lebanon, something that Netanyahu the prime minister has been uh
00:23:17speaking about as well as other uh members of his uh
00:23:21far right coalition, if they can get normalization deal or
00:23:25some sort of political, diplomatic ties with libanon out of it, this will be
00:23:29huge win, especially uh before the elections on
00:23:33October the 27th, but also they want to secure the northern borders,
00:23:36something that brought Netanyahu great deal of headaches from the tens of thousands
00:23:40of Israeli residents there who have been
00:23:44stable historic supporters of his likut party and the right in
00:23:48Israel, but that the... frustrated and angry with how
00:23:52things are going given that since yesterday in the last 24
00:23:55hours um Israel has renewed its assault a
00:23:59couple of positions in southern Lebanon, among them el
00:24:02Mansouri near tire in in southern
00:24:06Lebanon um and going after Hizballah
00:24:10which means that the uh the borders aren't going to
00:24:13be quiet as Israeli prime minister has promised
00:24:17and pleged to his constituencies. so Israel, if it
00:24:21can get a disarm, disarming of Hizballah and some sort of
00:24:25diplomatic deal out these negotiations, that would be
00:24:28huge win uh for Netanyahu if it can be done before the
00:24:32elections, which is highly unlikely at this point. occupied

00:24:44occupied west bank, at least 16 palestinians have been injured,
00:24:4760 people have also been arrested amid. raids, they come day after

00:29:59and Washington DC over both access. two patriot
00:30:03systems, to patriot intercepted missiles themselves, but also about Ukraine's
00:30:07ability to manufacture patriots in the future. the key
00:30:10fact in all of this is the lead time that it would take to to do
00:30:14so, even with patriot systems getting green lit today, we would still be looking at the middle of
00:30:18next year before those will be able to come on-stream and possibly even later before they're actually
00:30:22able to be integrated into Ukrainian
00:30:25air defense. in the meantime, Ukraine is working incredibly hard
